Have you ever had a moment when you wish that the ground would open up and swallow you? If not, then come and spend a few hours out and about with Gregory and you’ll soon have a list of said moments! Recently, Gregory attended the birthday party of one of his little friends. When he returned home sweaty and dishevelled, he set about rooting through his party bag. On pulling out a bag of sweets, he asked me, “Mummy, are these sweeties good for me?” I told him, as he tucked in, that sweets were only to be eaten occasionally as a treat as they are not a particularly healthy snack.

The very next day we bumped into the mum of the birthday boy and she asked Gregory if he’d enjoyed the party. “Yes I loved it,” he replied, “but Mummy said that the sweets you put in the party bag were bad for me.”

A short rambled attempt to justify his statement followed before I whisked him off hurriedly to the play centre where we were due to meet friends. At least he couldn’t embarrass me there amongst pals...

Music For Little People is exactly that, music for little people! Come along and learn about rhythm and rhyme, or join in with the dancing and singing, its all part of the musical adventure. All sessions are run by qualified teachers and are split by developmental age from 0 to 5 years. To register simply call and book today or visit our website for further details of your local class.

Gregory told me that he needed to go to the toilet as soon as we arrived. As we opened the door to the ladies’ loos, a woman smiled at us as we entered adjacent cubicles. After we had flushed and unlatched the door, Gregory exclaimed in the loudest voice possible, “Mummy, listen to that lady’s wee wee, it’s really loud, it goes,’ PSSSSSHHHHHHHH!’” What followed was the quickest hand wash in history and a dash to a dark corner with our hands wet and our heads held low!

Meet The King of Kids! Keith Chapman has given endless joy to millions of children (and parents) around the world by creating famous children's TV characters.

In his early days Keith worked on programmes such as Fraggle Rock and Muppet Babies and later went on to create Bob the Builder, Fifi and the Flowertots, Roary the Racing Car, Little Charley Bear and Raa Raa the Noisy Lion. We feel privileged to have chatted to Keith. Read on to find out more about The King of Kids...

When you were little what did you want to be when you grew up? Either a pro footballer or a cartoonist. Guess I was better at drawing than I was at football.

8

Which of the characters that you created are you most proud of and who is your favourite? My proudest would have to be Bob the Builder as he was my first success. My favourite is probably Ruff the Dog, an adult cartoon character who will hopefully be famous one day.

Why are most of your characters northern? You're right! I've no idea why. The main characters voices do seem to be mainly Northern, (Neil Morrissey for Bob, Jane Horrocks for Fifi, Peter Kay for Roary, Lorraine Kelly for Raa Raa). But Little Charley Bear has James Cordon as the voice and many of the secondary characters in our shows are Southern. My next pre-school character has a Southern accent but you'll have to wait for that one. Is there an educational message to your shows and how do you incorporate this? Most of our shows have semi-educational or positive messages subliminally planted into the scripts. They mainly entertain children but might also teach them counting or social skills like sharing, being kind, tolerance, rights and wrongs, when to apologise, confidence building, thoughtfulness etc.

Like us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/jollytotsmagazine and follow us on Twitter: @JollyTotsMag

Where do you get your inspiration and ideas from? Everywhere. Walking down the street, meeting people, observing things, reading the news, listening, keeping my mind tuned in. Or sometimes someone comes through the door with a great idea I just want to get involved in.

Are any of your characters based on people you know? Not really, although Ruff the Dog is a little like me. Do you have ideas or characters in the pipeline? Yes, I am working on many new ideas and characters, from pre-school to the 6 to 9 year old age group, a prime time sitcom and even some movies. I can't reveal them just yet but I'm very hopeful they will see the light of day.

Have any of your creations been turned down only to

then go on to become hits? Yes, Bob the Builder was rejected by the Jim Henson organisation. I offered it to them first because I once worked there but they were working on their own building concept at the time and couldn't take on Bob too. Hit Entertainment then grabbed it and turned him into a global star!

Do you often watch your own creations on TV or DVD when you’re at home? I've often switched on the TV inadvertently and seen one of our characters. It happens abroad a lot too; sitting in a hotel room somewhere and seeing Bob pop up speaking Spanish or German or Greek. How do you stay in touch with what children of today are looking for? I watch what programmes they seem to like but mainly I go by gut instinct. I have to want to

watch the shows myself; I have to love the characters. Then I know that kids and their parents should love them too.

Tell us about Little Charley Bear which has launched on DVD. Little Charley Bear came to us from Annix Studios - a very talented bunch of animators based in Pinewood. His catchphrase is "It's amazing what your imagination can do!" Charley uses his imagination to go on adventures with his toy friends from his toy box. It's beautifully animated and encourages kids to use their imaginations and to be creative, which is the most important thing we can teach them. Creativity is what makes the world move forward. The new DVD, which comes with a free articulated Charley toy, is out now.

Both Children gave Little Dish the Big Thumbs Up!

Hillary and her business partner John created Little Dish in 2006. Expecting her first child, Hillary noticed that no one was making fresh, healthy food for kids which parents could buy in the supermarket. She then set out on her vision to provide a range of food much like the meals you cook at home, only using ingredients that you would find in your kitchen. And thus, Little Dish was born. Little Dish, the UK’s fastest growing fresh children’s food brand, launched their new and improved recipes in eye-catching new packaging in July. Every Little Dish recipe has been reviewed to ensure that Little Dish continues to provide the best-tasting and most nutritious meals for toddlers and young children.

“We’ve worked really hard with our team of tiny tasters and suppliers over the last year to ensure that we are delivering the most delicious, healthiest recipes for parents and their children”, says Claire Richardson, Product Manager at Little Dish. Developed to appeal to parents and kids alike, Little Dish’s bright,

colour-coded new packaging includes photography and illustrations of each recipe’s lead ingredients enabling parents to see at a glance what is in a meal.

There are nine dishes in the Little Dish range and are available to buy from Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose nationwide.

Reader Review

One of our Jolly Tots readers, Louise Evans of Yaxley, has sampled a selection of Little Dishes and here’s what she found:

I am a mummy of two boys George, age 6, and Harry, 16 months and a fan of Jolly Tots magazine, so was delighted when I was asked to review some meals suitable for children age one and upwards. As a family we don’t eat ready meals and my boys have never eaten baby jar food so I was a bit apprehensive at how they would take to them.

On arriving home from a baby group with a friend and her daughter I was greeted with a parcel containing six Little Dish meals. Great, I didn’t have to worry about getting something from the freezer for our tots’ lunch.

The packaging was inviting with colourful drawings of animals making them child friendly. It detailed the ingredients and its nutritional value which was useful. It also showed a picture of what the food looked like. When I removed the cardboard sleeve I was pleasantly surprised to see that they looked like an adult’s ready meal. “It looked yummy and enough to share”

We decided on the chicken risotto - it looked yummy and enough to share but also the picture on the front is a giraffe which is my favourite animal! On heating, it smelt tasty. My friend and I thought it smelt too good for the children! There wasn’t quite enough to be shared between the two but probably too much for one, at this age. Both children ate it promptly and it wasn’t rejected. When George got home from school he chose the Fish Pie as he liked the picture on the packaging. As it was cooking, it smelt strongly of fish, which was okay but if you are not a major fish fan it could put you off. George said he liked the fish and the potatoes, but not the sauce Continued on page 26

selling cookbook for babies and toddlers 'Complete Baby and Toddler Meal Planner' including a fun recipe and a reader offer. The Foods to Choose

Annabel Karmel

The Goddess of Baby and Children’s Food and Nutrition! To most, Annabel Karmel needs no introduction. Born in North London in 1962 and mother to three, Annabel is the UK’s fourth best-selling cookery author only just behind Jamie Oliver, Delia Smith and Nigella Lawson. As the UK’s number one bestselling author on cooking and nutrition for babies and children, Annabel’s tried and tested recipes and invaluable meal planners have been firm favourites with babies, toddlers, children and parents for over 20 years. It all started when Annabel’s second child, Nicholas, was little. He was an extremely fussy eater and Annabel was desperate to get him to eat. ‘Bland food wasn’t what babies

14

liked; they liked the food that tasted good,’ says Annabel. At the time, she was in a nursery group and the other mums all used to love her tasty recipes. They persuaded her to put them in a book. Annabel spent two years researching child nutrition and writing recipes and wrote the book 'Complete Baby and Toddler Meal Planner' which launched her career and has become the authoritative guide for feeding babies and toddlers. It has been in the bestseller lists since publication. In June 2006, Annabel was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for her outstanding work in the field of child nutrition.

Children under five need more dietary fat than adults in proportion to their bodyweight so unless your child is overweight, don’t give him foods that are low-fat. Fats like cheese or full fat yoghurt are a rich source of energy which your toddler needs to fuel his growth. There are, of course, exceptions to the rule, and an overweight toddler should have his fat intake restricted by cutting down on processed and fatty foods and switching to low-fat dairy products. High-fibre foods in large amounts are also unsuitable as they are bulky and filling and do not supply enough calories for a rapidly growing toddler. Also, a high-fibre diet can hinder the absorption of vital minerals like iron. Provided your child eats plenty of fruit and vegetables he will get all the fibre he needs.

Once your child is twelve months old you can switch from formula to whole cow’s milk, but don’t give semi-skimmed milk before the age of two as it is low in calories, which your child needs to grow. Skimmed milk should not be introduced before five years. Children over one year need 400 ml/14 fl oz of whole milk a day. For children who are very picky, there may be advantages to continuing with a follow-on formula (which is fortified with vitamins and iron) until two years of age. Although more and more people seem to be turning away from red meat in favour of fish and chicken, bear in mind that red meat provides more iron and zinc than either fish or poultry. Try making tasty meals with lean minced meat – a good tip is to cook the meat and then chop it in a food processor so that it is not lumpy and there are some lovely recipes for

Beefburgers, Meatballs and Mini Minute steaks in my book that make excellent family meals. Try to avoid processed meats like sausages, salami and corned beef.

“Iron deficiency and anaemia can cause difficult behaviour and poor concentration in toddlers”

If you are bringing your child up on a vegetarian diet or if he simply dislikes eating meat, make sure that you include nutrient-dense foods like cheese and eggs in his diet. Avoid giving too many high fibre foods like wholegrain cereals and pulses as tummies fill up quickly and your child may not get enough energy and protein to grow. Provided your toddler is eating a good variety of food types, a vegetarian diet can provide all the nutrients he needs. It is very important to include vegetarian sources of iron such as green vegetables, pulses, fortified breakfast cereals and dried fruit every day, and make sure you give foods or drinks containing Vitamin C at the same meal as this helps to boost the iron absorption from non-meat sources. Pasta remains a

great favourite with toddlers and you can combine it with other healthy foods such as vegetables and tuna. Individual pieces of pasta like penne or fusilli tend to be easiest for toddlers to eat. (Although, when my son, Nicholas, was 20 months old he invented his own method of eating spaghetti – he held it out in front of him by the two ends and sucked in from the middle! Not the height of good manners perhaps, but certainly very efficient.)

Kimbolton Preparatory School

With small classes and a friendly, caring atmosphere, Kimbolton Preparatory School has the feel of a village school yet the facilities and opportunities that only a bigger one can offer. Its pupils receive plenty of individual attention but have enough classmates to develop a wide circle of friends. They cover the National Curriculum and more besides: modern foreign languages and weekly swimming lessons from age five, an extensive programme of trips and visits in support of their classroom-based learning and a huge range of activities at

lunchtimes and after-school.

As children progress through the school, formal sports coaching and inter-school fixtures are introduced. Music is taught from Reception onwards and individual instrumental lessons from specialist visiting music teachers are available once a child is ready. There are various ensembles which regularly form the school’s orchestra for formal and informal concerts.

“Life at Kimbolton Preparatory School is busy, hugely rewarding and great fun. “

‘Kim Club’ provides before and after-school care for all ages. The academic results are

excellent but the school’s approach is one of balance so that children are stimulated, developed and challenged in many different ways. Its recent inspection report praised almost every aspect of the school as ‘Outstanding’. Kimbolton Preparatory School caters for children from ages four to eleven. Almost all of them progress, with their friends, to Kimbolton School for their secondary education where the ethos continues. The Prep and Senior Schools are located at opposite ends of Kimbolton School’s stunning 120-acre campus which includes extensive parkland and the historic Kimbolton Castle, the former residence of the Dukes of Manchester and once home to Queen Katharine of Aragon. Remember the time when you could flounce around the supermarket, flicking through the magazines, considering the delectable desserts and generally perusing the vast array of BOGOF deals at your leisure? No? Me neither.

Whether you have a tiny baby or a tantrum throwing toddler; shopping in its many forms tends not to be the pleasurable experience that it once was before the children came along. Read on for some tips and tricks to deal with the scenarios that most of us are only too familiar with. Planning a shopping trip with a baby. Many of you will have been there and done this, but if you're awaiting the arrival of your baby or are first time parents, ensure your shopping trip is planned as a military operation!

Pack your bag: Don't forget your usual kit. It's useful to have a checklist pinned to the fridge to ensure that leaving the house can be done as efficiently as possible without having to hover about wondering if you've forgotten anything. Just don't forget the baby!

18

Find out which carriage the little prince/princess prefers: This can be a spot of trial and error to start with; indeed your own method of transport may well have a bearing on your decision. Many supermarkets will have special trolleys for your car seat to pop into securely, meaning that baby does not even need to be disturbed. Alternatively, you may like to wear your baby in a sling or a wrap so that you can cuddle whilst selecting spuds! If you're bringing your pram along, you can hook a basket over the handle (or

Like us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/jollytotsmagazine and follow us on Twitter: @JollyTotsMag

use a bag hook if you have a single handle), but you must exercise caution when using this method and ensure that you don't overload the basket which may cause the pram to tip. If you have an older baby who can sit in the trolley and have walked to the shops with a pram or pushchair, most supermarkets will find a place for you to store it whilst you push your trolley around, or they may even have lockable trolley stores which most prams will fit into. Plan ahead for feeding and changing: Some larger supermarkets will have baby changing rooms and cafes or facilities for warming bottles and somewhere for you to sit. Breastfeeding is welcomed in some places, but it's a good idea to ring ahead to find out if there's a room available or if their cafe is 'breastfeeding friendly'. A handy item to own is a breastfeeding cape so that your baby can enjoy their milk whilst your modesty is preserved! For bottle feeders, don't forget to arm yourself with formula containers and thermal bottle bags. Before you leave the house, consider the facilities of the shop that you're visiting. If they're not well equipped for parent and baby then shop elsewhere!

The Crying Game: Expect bouts of crying for no good reason other than boredom. If this happens, give your baby a toy to hold if they are ablesometimes even a colourful (but safe!) item from your trolley may keep them amused. Stop for a cuddle if you need to, but if your baby refuses to stop crying and you find yourself the subject of grumpy stares, don't be afraid to ask a staff member to mind your shopping whilst you leave the shop and go for a walk to calm the little one down. Planning a shopping trip with a toddler. If you thought that shopping with a baby was a challenge...

Pack your bag: Stuff a bag with small toys, books, snacks in pots, drinks, a change of clothes and wipes.

Plan your entertainment: If your toddler isn't content to sit in the trolley and read a book quietly (does this EVER happen?), then you may find that they'd like to get involved. Give them their own pad to 'write' their shopping list whilst they sit in the trolley, or cross things off yours as they get them. If your child likes to be more 'hands on' with the shopping, let them walk beside you and take the items you need off the shelf (not the wine!) and where possible, let them make decisions about flavour or variety. If they grab the odd item that you

don't require, then as long as they're doing it safely, it doesn't harm to let them think they're helping and then pop it back when they turn their back! If your toddler owns a toy trolley, then why not bring it along and let them shop like a grown up?

Going wild in the isles: For many toddlers, there is no better place to throw a tantrum/run amok/cry uncontrollably, than the supermarket. After all, their audience is varied and plentiful and the acoustics of a large building allows them to project their voice impressively. That said, the best thing that you can do is to stay calm and not play into the hands of the attention seeker! Distraction is often a great method of intercepting an ‘episode’. As quickly as you can, show the child something they might find interesting or ask them to count bananas/polish the trolley handle with a tissue. Keep talking and throw in a couple of jokes and before you know it, you will have happy shoppers all round. Each child is different though, and some will need a while to calm down, whilst others might stop their tantrum immediately if they’re asked to point to cans with a red label. If your child doesn’t calm easily after either leaving them to wobble it out or distracting them, then it may become necessary to remove them from the shop for a little while. When outside, always stay calm and hold them or do whatever it takes to soothe them until they are ready to go back to the trolley. It goes without saying that it’s never a good idea to shout or argue with the child as the situation can quickly escalate out of control as tempers fray! If you have more than one child, it’s always a good idea to put the oldest one in charge of entertaining the younger one and encourage good behaviour by asking them to set the example of how to shop nicely.

Rewards: Treats should always be offered with caution as it’s never a good idea to ‘give in’ to bad behaviour and offer them food or toys, as they may then think that playing up gains them rewards. Instead, brief them at the start of the trip and explain that a treat will be given if they help you to shop or behave nicely. Remind them of the ‘prize’ at intervals. If they don’t behave nicely, stick to your word and tell them that if they behave better on the next trip, they can have a treat then. Shopping with children of any age can be difficult for a variety of reasons, but if you can find a happy balance, you may find that it can actually be quite a pleasurable experience… or if not then you can always do your shopping online! by Emma Perry

What do you think about when choosing a nursery for your child/children? Is it the cost, the location, or the practicality of it all that is the biggest factor in making what is such an important decision in both yours and your child’s life? With so many different nurseries and so many different opinions on each one it’s no wonder parents don’t know what to do for the best! A day nursery (as opposed to a nursery school) is normally a privately run nursery for children aged three months to five years. However, there are also local authority and community run nurseries. Normal hours are from 8am to 6pm all year round, except for bank and public holidays. Nurseries adhere to strict ratios of staff to children, as well as guidelines and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) as set own by the Government.

Timing is crucial with nurseries, with the best ones often getting booked up a year in advance. The advice here is to set aside some time well in advance of your requirements to look around a selection of nurseries and to carry out your research, that way you can get your child’s name on the waiting list of the nursery that best suits your needs.

The best way to research is to take a look at the Ofsted website (www.ofstead.gov.uk) to find nurseries in your area. Also ask parents in the area if they can recommend any nurseries to you and contact your local primary school for a chat. An important factor may be the size, nurseries range greatly in size from ten to over 100 spaces. This is a preference that is dependent on you as a parent;

some parents like a modern purpose built nursery whilst others opt for a ‘home from home’ feel. Once you have this information you can narrow your list and then book a visit to those on your short list. Remember that first impressions count. What are your thoughts when you first arrive? Does it look in a good state of repair? Is it secure? Were you greeted when you first arrived?

The key is the staff and the manager. They make the difference between a good nursery and a poor one, so take your time, look at a selection of childcare options and go with your heart. That way you will have peace of mind when leaving your child/children that they are in a place where they feel happy and secure.

Staff Training for Preschools & Nurseries:

Would you like to learn how to use British Sign Language (BSL) with all children in your care to improve their communication and literacy skills? Introducing BSL into your preschool or nursery is a way to make learning for all children fun. It helps to engage a child and makes their activities visual and kinaesthetic and many children learn best that way. In fact, children learn their letters and sounds and enjoy reading earlier with the use of BSL. It can also act as a great bridge if a child’s first language is not English.

I am sure that you will agree that preschool years are vitally important to a child’s learning and academic success. It is a precious time that we cannot claim back and so laying the right foundation is a necessity.

22

Communicating Hands offers training for preschool and Nursery staff that would like to learn this valuable skill. They will learn many BSL signs and great songs but also how signing: influences a child’s ability to concentrate. That it boosts enthusiasm and a readiness to learn. It reduces negative behaviour and increases self-esteem. Improves memory, increases vocabulary and when added to fun songs and story telling it becomes a powerful fun and effective tool for teaching phonics, reading writing and spelling. babies take over a year to get to that point. All those changes use a lot of energy - another reason why babies need to feed frequently and sleep for shorter periods than adults. Research has shown that at about 12 weeks babies' bodies begin to react in ways which help them to sleep for longer periods at night, and from that point on babies will often gradually sleep more at night and less in the day. Babies are all different, just like we are and some babies will take longer to sleep all night than others.

The phrase 'Sleeping like a baby' is one that we all use and as parents of a new baby, the question that you are likely to be asked often is ‘How are they sleeping?' or 'Are they sleeping through the night?’ Groups of parents will often have conversations around how much sleep they are managing to get. This is understandable - sleep deprivation, is after all, used as a form of torture and getting regular sleep in those first few weeks with a new baby can become the biggest issue, as everything else seems so much harder if you have had very little sleep. I think it is useful to take a step back and look at things from the baby's perspective. Here are a few facts that you might find interesting.

Newborn babies may well sleep for 18 hours per day, but they tend to do this in 2-3 hour blocks. Babies sleep differently to adults, as we quickly fall into a sleep known as ‘quiet sleep’, which will make up the majority of our night's sleep.

Babies spend much longer in what is known as active sleep, a lighter sleep where they are more easily disturbed. You will know this if you have ever tried to put down a sleeping baby and they have woken up again! It seems to take babies about 20 minutes from falling asleep to reach deeper sleep and then they will wake again within an hour or so. Newborn babies only have very

“New families need time to get to know one another. Your baby is a new member of your family and you will all have to make adjustments.” small stomachs. On the day they are born they are about the size of a marble (5-7ml), this stretches to the size of a ping pong ball by about day 3 (22-27 ml) and by about day 10 it is the size of a large egg (60-81ml). This explains why babies need to feed a little and often and their sleep pattern often reflects this.

Unlike many other animals, when babies are born they have a lot of development left to do in a very short period of time. A lamb will be on its feet and running round the field shortly after birth; our

As new parents many people will give you advice and guidance about how to get more sleep, which can be unwelcome at a time when you are trying to find your own way. New families need time to get to know one another. Your baby is a new member of your family and you will all have to make adjustments. To begin with different sleep patterns will be part of that. I still have fond memories of night feeds when the house was quiet and I could just spend some time with my baby. You need to find things that work for you and your family; you may also find that talking to other new parents going through the same thing might be really helpful. I think for new mums going along to one of the many ‘Mums and Babies’ groups can really help with this - look out for them in Children's Centres, local churches and community centres. Sometimes after a night of not much sleep, finding out that you are not alone can make all the difference! Jenny volunteers at the St Neots NCT Bumps and Babes group which meets at the Eatons Children's Centre, Eaton Socon, St. Neots 10-12 on Thursdays. All expectant mums and those caring for pre-walking babies welcome.

“They were tasty, looked and smelt appealing and the pricing is reasonable compared to other ready meals on the market”.

As I said earlier I am not a mummy who has given her children jar food and ready meals, so this was a first for us all. While, I will still continue cooking my homemade meals for the family, the Little Dish meals have changed my mind about children’s prepared meals and they will be great for us to use as a reserve in the freezer for those emergency meals. Little Dishes were easy to prepare and had good tasty nutritional content and they do not add salt or sugar. All the meals smelt tasty and I sampled each meal and they tasted like home cooked food. I was impressed. Well done Little Dish!
