Welcome to the Autumn Issue of Jolly Tots
Here I am sat at the window with the sun beating down on one of the hottest days of the year while editing the autumn issue, thinking that a nice crisp autumn day would be welcomed right now to break up the hot summer we’ve had (well minus a few cloudy, rainy days and the odd thunderstorm!)
While spring is known as the time for new beginnings with lots of new life around, in many ways autumn could be seen as a time of new beginnings too with many starting a new pre-school, school or college. Perhaps you have a little one who is starting pre-school or school for the first time. If so you will want to read Heidi’s article on settling your little one into pre-school or nursery. If your little one going off to school leaves you with time on your hands, then Emma’s feature on Money Spinning Ideas is packed full of ways to make a bit of money in your new found time. Jane, this month has been asked to tell us about funding for nursery or pre-schoo,l while Jenny has written about how new dads can adjust to going back to work once the little bundle arrives. In Gregory's house, there is always music playing in the kitchen during the day and he's used to hearing me singing along to the radio at the top of my voice. Often, when it's time to sit at the table for dinner, Gregory's dad will attempt to discreetly change the channel to a station that's likely to be playing music which is more to his taste (which is very different from mine!). Gregory will alert me to the situation and a debate will begin about the reason I don't like my husband's choice of music as he attempts to justify why he turned off what I was listening to. As you can imagine, Gregory often picks up our opinions and it seems that he takes them on board and applies them to his own musical tastes. Just yesterday, we had a friend visiting and he heard the song on the radio, he told her, 'I dont want to listen to this anymore because it's not my bag...' A little while ago we were out shopping in a busy town centre and people had gathered around a street performer who was playing a guitar and singing. Gregory wanted to stop and listen and worked his way to the front, close to the singer and after a minute, she finished her song and the small crowd that had gathered clapped appreciatively. As the round of applause continued, he asked me why everyone was clapping. I told him that people clapped their hands to show that they liked the lady's singing and guitar playing. He thought about it for a while and I expected him to eventually join in. Instead, he waited until the noise had died down and in the moment of silence that followed the end of the applause, he piped up loudly, 'Well I'm not going to clap, Mummy; because she sounded like a cat being strangled didn't she?' We don't stop to listen to street performers anymore...

Dads, Work and New baby... Yahoo got international publicity recently after giving new fathers working for them eight weeks paternity leave. Here in the UK most new dads get two weeks off after their babies are born, but those who are self employed or have recently changed jobs might find it difficult to take even that. New dads can find it hard when they do go back to work, as after asking after the baby and perhaps looking at a few photos, colleagues will often expect them to be back to their normal selves, whereas the dads can feel their lives have changed hugely. How can you make the most of the time you do have off and try and get some balance when you do go back to work? • Make sure while you are off you make some time to get used to

being a family of three (or more if you have older children). Friends and family will want to visit but this is a very special time with a new family member and you need to try and make the most of it. You could block out some time with no visitors or ensure visitors know how long you are happy for them to stay. If grandparents are staying with you, perhaps suggest they could have a day out. • Make sure you get involved in those first few weeks; that does mean changing nappies, but you can also take your baby for a walk in the pram, bath them, try out using a baby sling or just spend some time with them at home talking to them and getting to know them. When you go back to work, make sure you still have time to do these things at evenings or on days off. Mums, this means you must try not to tell dads that you have now found a ‘better way’ of doing things (however tempting
this might be!). Mums and dads will often have a different approach to things; partly due to mum usually getting to spend more time with baby, but let dad find his own way.
• When you go back to work, think about how you are going to get some downtime for yourself – if previously you have relied on relaxing with a cup of tea or a beer when you get in, that might not happen from now on. If you can, try to unwind a bit before you get home. You could read a good book on the train, or cycle so that you have some enjoyable exercise on the way home. Whatever you do, try not to point score when you do get home as being a new mum at home is as tough as being a new dad trying to work with perhaps very little sleep.

• Sleep, or the lack of it, can be a huge issue with a young baby. If you need to be fresh for work, or even for the drive there, then think about how you make sure you get enough sleep on nights before you are working. Some couples find it helps to sleep in separate rooms for a period of time to help with this and many people take ‘shifts’ to catch up on naps to refresh themselves. Make sure you talk this through and agree a plan as and when the subject needs to be addressed. • Many new dads feel extra pressure to do well at work at a time when family finances might be tighter. This is understandable, but if that involves having to work late or showing willing by agreeing
to go away on work trips, make sure you talk this through with your partner.

Money Spinning Ideas Not ready to go back to work but want to make a few extra pennies? Read on for alternative ways to make money around bringing up your children.
We all know how difficult it can be to slip back into the working world if you have stayed at home to raise your children. It's not always as straight forward as simply gaining employment and arranging childcare for your youngsters. You need to take into consideration that childcare can be expensive, logistics can be a nightmare in terms of travel and work times and of course, you may not want to leave your child in the care of somebody else too often. However if you are home alone as your tot has just started preschool or nursery or you find yourself with a free hour or two while your baby sleeps; why not use your time wisely to top up your income? Whilst many of the options available may not earn you a fortune, it's always nice to have something extra coming in. Read on for some ideas.

STAY AT HOME Complete surveys
There are many online survey sites which you can register with and most of them will send you surveys to complete on a daily basis. Depending on the length of the survey and what the company's general rates of pay are; you can earn between 5p and a few pounds per survey that you complete.
Surveys can be about any subject matter, from consumer opinion to personal questions about different aspects of your life and many of them won't take much over half an hour to complete.

The only down side to completing these is that they often have some qualifying questions and you may find that these take you a few minutes to get through, only to be told that you don't meet their target criteria.
Some survey sites will pay into your PayPal account, while others will let you select vouchers to use in popular high street or online shops. Some may even send you freebies to sample and answer subsequent questions on. I like www.onepoll.com and www.iap-interactive.com, but there are plenty of others out there!
Write reviews
If you enjoy writing, this can be a way to pass your spare time while getting your opinion out there. There are a few review sites that you can join which will allow you to review endless household products and services, from a humble can of baked beans to the best restaurants on the planet - the world is your consumer based oyster!
Your review needs to be of a certain length and quality and you will be paid somewhere between about 10p and 30p for each review you submit. Each time a member of the review community reads and rates the usefulness of your review, you earn an additional penny or two. The money soon builds up and you can end up earning a few pounds from each review and when you get to a certain amount, you can cash your points in for a payment or vouchers.
The key to getting other reviewers to rate your review is to look through the community and rate other people's. They then tend to rate yours also and you all make money from helping each other out. Try www.dooyoo.co.uk
Enter Competitions
While entering competitions may not make you any instant cash; some people who dedicate their spare time to it end up winning multiple prizes, whether they be in the form of cash, holidays or packets of crisps. It's logical that the more hours you put into entering competitions, the more likely you are to win- but much of it is also quite literally down to the luck of the draw. There are many places to pull out competitions, including online (e.g. Twitter and Facebook), magazines, in store prize draws and on TV.
A tip would be to only enter competitions which promise prizes that you actually want to win or can sell easily locally or on eBay. Whilst an electronic egg poacher might sound novel - is it worth three minutes of your time when those valuable moments could be spent on trying to bag yourself a nice shiny BMW?
It's worth scanning the terms and conditions of each competition as you go along too as the prize may not be what it seems at first glance, for example, you may find the the holiday that you have got your eye on doesn't include flights, so you may have to shell out for these yourself. On the whole though, competition prizes tend to be very good as it's often more cost effective for companies to attract an audience and market their wares in the form of prizes than it is for them to pay for large scale advertising. If you're going to become a regular 'comper', it's a good idea to install some form filling software such as 'Roboform' to save you time. It's also wise to set up a system to keep track of what you've entered as duplicate entries can disqualify you. Do be aware of the tick boxes on the entry pagesmake sure you opt out of potential junk mail and do set up a separate email address as your inbox will become busy!

Make use of your Talents
Are you a creative cake baker or can you turn a few sparkly beads into a desirable adornment? If you have a creative flair, then try your hand at setting up your own small business making and selling things.
If you decide to set up alone, you'll need some money to put into getting yourself up and running for materials and the likes. If you start small, you can soon build up your stock as you start to sell and get orders. The other important thing to focus on is marketing your business as there will be nobody to sell to unless people know that you exist!
Make use of social media and local publications to get your product or service and logo out there and recognised and have some business cards printed. Attend networking meetings in your area where you can chat to others, share ideas, learn new strategies and make yourself known within a community of local businesses. And don't forget to set up a website and Facebook page; the latter being an invaluable tool for modern marketing as you display photos, post updates and run competitions.The more things you get involved with, the more likely it is that people will remember you which will keep the orders
coming in. Don't forget to keep abreast of local events such as school fetes, shows and town events as you can often reserve yourself a stall with which to display and sell your wares to the public! Before you book anything though, do have a think about whether the audience that the event is likely to pull in are the appropriate clientele for your products.
eBay
You don't need to root through the attic to uncover hidden treasures from days of yore to sell on eBay (although it's always a good idea to try that!) As a mum to little ones, you'll have already built up quite an impressive pile of things that your tot has grown out of or is ready to part with. While it's nice to pass down clothes and other baby items to friends or relatives who can use them, it's also nice to have money coming in to buy new things for your precious ones!
The key to eBay selling is to do your research before you start to sell; search before you begin to see what sells and what doesn't do as well. You can do this by clicking on 'advanced' in the top right hand corner of the home page, then typing in your item and clicking 'completed listings'. You will be able to get a general idea of what your items sell for. It's definitely worth selling larger items such as cots and pushchairs, especially if they're in good condition as you can always reap some money back from these. As far as children's clothing is concerned, some brands are always well sought after; high street brands such as NEXT are popular as is Mamas and Papas and designer items tend to create a bidding war! If you have some supermarket branded items, it may be worth selling these in bundles for a few pounds as after postage costs are added on to individual pieces, they may cost a buyer almost as much as buying them brand new. Also think about the season; people are unlikely to fight over a wooly scarf in Summer! Fit as many relevant words into the title as you can (have a think about what people may search for and the terms they might use) and make sure that you spell things correctly as mistakes may prevent your listing from showing up in people's searches.
Remember that eBay do take fees, as do PayPal so check the site for current rates. Remember never to pitch your bidding price too high - if something is listed initially for 99p, people are more likely to take an interest in it and lock onto it with a determination to win, thus starting a bidding war.

Remember that eBay isn't the only place to sell your goods. You can also sell your baby and toddler things in one fell swoop by booking a slot with your local NCT sale, by visiting a shop that specialises in second hand baby and toddler items or by contacting someone like Theo and Maisie (see advert on page 6) who put on baby sales. There are also local selling pages on Facebook that don’t incur selling fees.
OUT AND ABOUT If your partner is home in the evenings and at weekends or you have someone to watch your tots, then there are many ways to make money for a few hours here and there outside of the home.
Car Boots
If you are due a big clear out and have a lot to sell, then car boot sales may be a quicker and easier way to make money from selling your unwanted items.
Car boots are ideal for shifting knick-knacks and old bits of furniture and equipment that eBay customers may not want to buy online. You will tend to get a higher price for items on eBay, so just make sure you do your research first. That said, you can also use this knowledge to your advantage (as many people already do) and become a car boot prowler! To become a prowler, you must turn up early and with a pocket full of money ready to jump on bargains and haggle away. Many people make a few hundred pounds after each sale that they attend from buying items from the sale cheaply and selling them on eBay for a nice little profit. For example, it's often possible to pick up a popular brand of pram in the region of £20 and sell it on eBay for closer to £100, especially if it's a range that's still available to buy brand new in the shops!
Other pieces of interest include old records and antiques, but you will need to do much more research before you recognise a bargain (and jump on the items early as dealers also prowl car boots!) If in doubt about what you may be able to make a profit on, take your mobile with you. With a bit of luck you'll be able to connect to the internet while at the sale and quickly look items up to see if they are worth buying or not!
Mystery Shopping
are plenty of companies that will employ people to go and 'spy' on various outlets including pubs, restaurants and shops. Some assignments may even be in the form of a telephone call or an email. You will be expected to be taking mental notes of various aspects of the establishment in question, such as how customers are treated by the staff and whether products and services are readily available and displayed well. You'll need to fill out a report at the end of the session, most likely in the form of a questionnaire and in turn you will be paid for your efforts, sometimes a monetary payment or occasionally in vouchers for you to spend. Payment for these type of assignments will vary but usually will be a fair amount for your half an hour effort. The drawback being that assignments may not be very frequent so mystery shopping shouldn't be relied on to earn a regular income.
Party planning
If you enjoy getting out and meeting new people on a regular basis then party planning might be just the thing for you. This involves taking a range of products to a willing host's home and entertaining a group of people with information about the products and games whilst the attendees enjoy drinks and nibbles while perusing your wares.
You can search online to find out which kind of products you might enjoy selling, such as toiletries, make up or home wares. Most companies will ask you to purchase a 'kit' in order for you to start your business. You will then need to arrange to visit the homes of people who are willing to host the party at their home and sell, sell, sell. You will get to keep a percentage of the money that you make from sales and there are often substantial discounts if you want to buy any of the products for yourself. The other advantage to the arrangement is that it's a little job which you can tailor around your own family commitments to suit. The beauty of the ideas above is that you can manipulate them to fit in with your life and they don't have to become all-consuming if you have times when you aren't able to fit them in. In fact, it's nice to think of them as hobbies with the benefit of profit!

Learning through Music The pre-school years are a critical period for learning and carefully planned music classes provide many opportunities for personal and social development.
Singing and performing simple pieces builds up selfesteem and builds individual confidence. Children expand their vocabulary when words are reinforced by simple actions and Math skills are reinforced by number rhymes and counting games. Music also teaches us an understanding of the world in which we live through songs and stories from other cultures. Finger rhymes and action songs give plenty of opportunity for refining motor skills and co-ordination. When moving to music in an eurhythmic way, children can develop the ability to use their imagination, to listen and to observe through music, dance, and imaginative play. When selecting a music class for your child, ask about class sizes. It needs to be small enough to meet the individual needs of the children and most importantly make sure the teacher is properly qualified and understands early childhood development. When will my child be eligible for nursery funding and for how much? Mother to three and owner of four nurseries, Jane is on hand to use her pearls of wisdom to answer all your questions. Funding in a nutshell...
So what is this ‘funding’ that nurseries and parents of young children talk about? Simply put, the government funds 15 hours of nursery education for children aged 3-5 years during term time, which equates to 38 weeks of the year. As you might guess there are guidelines to be adhered to which have hitherto varied across local authorities but as from the autumn, seem standardised. Here they are:
A child becomes eligible for funding the academic term following the child's 3rd birthday. For instance a child with a birthday of 3rd March will receive funding in the summer term; a birthday of 1st April will receive funding in the autumn term. Funding goes directly to the childcare provider who must be registered with both Ofsted and the Local Authority. The childcare provider must give up to 15 hours free, irrespective of their normal hourly rate. Meals are not included, just the care. A child may use up to 10 hours in one day and the whole 15 hours across 2 days between the hours of 8am and 6pm. Disclaimer: The answers given are Jane's opinion and it's always advisable to check with the relevant authorities and the latest guidelines.
Funding may be split across childcare providers providing the overall number of hours does not exceed 15 per week, for example 8 hours at Setting A and 7 hours at Setting B.
If you are a working Mum whose hours do not fall into term time only then ‘stretching’ the hours over the whole year will even out nursery bills to avoid the higher costs of the non-funded months April, August and December. In this instance, funded hours works out at around 11.5 hours per week over 50 weeks.
As part of the Government's initiative to extend early years childcare and education from this September, up to 15 hours per week is funded for disadvantaged 2 year olds. For most areas application is through local children's centre rather than the childcare provider.

Reduced frustration leads to less crying and screaming tamper tantrums as babies really can express their needs. Signing helps to engage a child and makes their activities visual and kinaesthetic and many children learn best that way. It improves memory and it gives visual clues to the meaning of words so it helps babies understand and develop a larger vocabulary. In fact, children learn their letters and sounds and enjoy reading earlier with the use of signs. It can also act as a great bridge if a child’s second language is English. By adding signs to songs and stories, a powerful and fun learning tool is formed. It is a wonderful bonding activity for parents and baby or preschool children to engage in meaningful and playful interaction. So why wait to communicate? Learn to sign with your child and experience the many benefits and joy in doing so.

Settling your little one into nursery or pre-school
Starting a new nursery or pre-school can be hard. With so many new things to adjust to it can often be as hard for the parent as it is for the child! Having worked in childcare for over 16 years I have some useful information that should help you with the settling in process. If you have never left your child it is usual for them to be unsettled when you first leave them, not only do they need to get used to the new people caring for them but they also need to get used to their new surroundings.
You must prepare yourself for your child to become upset; even the most confident of children can find the transition difficult or want to make you feel guilty for leaving them! I was the child that would cry and hang on to my mum’s neck, kick and scream because I had never been left, not even with grandparents! However, I survived my first day at pre-school (and the same in the lead up to primary
school and embarrassingly, secondary school) and so will your child!
In the lead up to your child starting nursery or pre-school it may be a good idea to leave them for short periods with a relative or friends that you trust, start off with small periods such as 15-20 minutes and gradually increase this time. This should help them to understand that even though you are leaving them you will always come back!
It is strongly advised that your child attends the settling in sessions recommended by the childcare setting; you can even stay for some of this time to ease them in gently! Many young children will cry initially but often they are quickly distracted. Children love predictability so introduce them to the idea of a changing routine. If you can, visit the nursery or school a few times before they start. Take the time to explain to your child what they’ll be doing without overloading them
with information as this can make them anxious.
All children at some time will be reluctant to want to leave the house, often it’s because they are tired or something happened the previous day that has unsettled them, lots of encouragement and a few cuddles should help. In my experience children are usually fine shortly after you’ve left! If your child seems to be consistently unsettled at nursery or preschool, plan a meeting with your child’s key worker and try to find out what is causing the problem.
It is never easy settling a child but just remember it’s often harder for you as the parent than for the child, show them that you are confident about the place and people you are leaving them with and they too will feel confident about being left.
