AIBA President’s Message An Olympic Games to Remember

Contents Page

Welcome to the third edition of the AIBA Boxing News for 2008. This issue celebrates the extraordinary 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, which will rightfully be remembered as one of the most visually spectacular sporting events in our lifetime. As the first Olympic Games under my presidency, I am extremely proud to have presided over a boxing competition which was spirited, fair and transparent. The Workers’ Gymnasium was home to the birth of new stars, and to numerous broken records, as success stories were numerous and celebrations well deserved. The new found equality in international boxing was there for all to see. With nine countries winning a gold medal out of a possible 11 it produced the best split in Olympic boxing history while Armenia, India and Mauritius claimed their first Olympic boxing medals, not to mention China, Mongolia and the Dominican Republic who were represented on the top of the dais for the first time. The intense competition inside the ring made for some wonderful memories, and my congratulations goes to not only the medal winners, but to all the 283 athletes who not only gave great commitment and courage to qualify for one of boxing’s greatest events but also to compete and challenge oneself at the highest level. I look forward to seeing the same spirit, camaraderie and determination at AIBA’s three remaining events in 2008 with the AIBA Youth World Championships, AIBA Women’s World Championships and the AIBA World Cup later this year. Yours boxing, Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu, AIBA President

Olympic Games Summary

Memorable Games with Boxing at its Best

A new era of Olympic boxing was complete on August 24, 2008 in the Workers’ Gymnasium in Beijing, China as records were broken, achievements celebrated and new heroes applauded during 15 fantastic days of brilliant boxing at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. AIBA President Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu, presiding over his first Olympic Games, was in full admiration of the high quality of action inside the ring while praising the officials and competitors for their

Olympic Games Summary professionalism and spirit of fair play throughout the entire competition. Two world champions added Olympic gold to their collection, China, Mongolia and the Dominican Republic won gold for the first time while Cuba went home without any gold medals for the first time since 1968.

The Workers’ Gymnasium was arguably the most popular venue in terms of atmosphere and the boxing didn’t disappoint as 283 boxers from 77 countries chased Olympic glory.

Olympic Games Summary Key moments After a bronze medal in the 2004 Olympic Games, and the 2007 and 2005 World Championships titles to his name, light flyweight Zou Shiming gave the home crowd the gold medal they were hoping for with victory in the 48kg final. It was the first of two Olympic gold medals for China, the first in its history. AIBA World Championships Chicago 2007 silver medallist Badar-Uugan Enkhbat (MGL) beat Leon Alarcon Yankiel (CUB) in the bantamweight 54kg division to claim Mongolia’s first Olympic boxing gold medal (out of eight Olympic Games, Mongolia had previously won two bronze medals - 1988, 1992). Serdamba Purevdorj claimed silver in the 48kg final to become Mongolia’s first silver medallist. After the success of Rakhim Chakhkiev in the 91kg division,

Alexey Tishchenko doubled Russia’s gold

medal count when he became only the fourth boxer to win Olympic gold in two weight divisions. After winning the 57kg title in Athens, Tishchenko beat Daouda Sow (FRA) in a very tight 60kg final 11:9. The three previous boxers to win gold medals in two different weight divisions are: Oliver Kirk (USA) bantamweight and featherweight in 1904, László Papp (HUN) middleweight in 1948 and light middleweight in 1952 and 1956 and Angel Herrera Vera (CUB) featherweight in 1976 and lightweight in 1980. AIBA World Championships Chicago 2007 champion Roberto Cammarelle (ITA) added an Olympic gold to his collection after knocking down Zhang Zhilei (CHN) in the fourth round in the super heavyweight class. It was another impressive performance from the «Professor» who was leading 14:4 at the time. The Val Barker Trophy went to Vasyl Lomachenko (UKR), the 57kg featherweight gold medallist.

Olympic Games Summary Fast Facts The 2008 Olympic Games provided the best split (nine countries winning a gold medal out of a possible 11) of individual countries winning gold in boxing. 1988 and 1996 saw nine countries win gold but 12 gold medals were on offer;

First Olympic boxing medals for Armenia, India and Mauritius;

First and second Olympic boxing gold medals and first silver medal for China;

Cuba went home without any gold medals for the first time since 1968 (excluding 1984 and 1988 when it boycotted the Olympics);

First Olympic boxing gold and silver medals for Mongolia; Felix Diaz won the only gold medal for the Dominican Republic at the 2008 Games and the first boxing gold medal in the Dominican Republic’s history when he won the 64kg light welterweight title;

USA recorded its worst ever medal return in the Olympics ahead of its previous worstever showing of a single silver medal in 1948;

First time since 1920 France has won three Olympic boxing medals; First Olympic boxing medals for Ireland since 1992; Only medals at the 2008 Olympic Games for Moldova and Mauritius.

5 AIBA Boxing News 3rd Edition 2008 - July - August - September

2008 Olympic Games Champions Light Flyweight 48kg: Zou Shiming (CHN) Having started the tournament as one of the favourites, the 27-year-old from the Guizhou Province became China’s hero, by claiming his country’s first gold medal to add to his 2004 Olympic bronze and two world championship titles.

Flyweight 51kg: Somjit Jongjohor (THA) Thirty-three-year-old Jongjohor brought the curtain down on an illustrious career with gold in the 51kg class to join his title win at the 2008 President’s Cup and the 2002 Asian Games. The 2003 world champion became Thailand’s fourth boxing gold medallist after his victory over Cuba’s Andris Laffita Hernandez.

Bantamweight 54kg: Badar-Uugan Enkhbat (MGL) A 2007 Asian champion 23year-old Enkhbat became the darling of Mongolia, winning his country’s first Olympic boxing gold medal with an incredible 15:5 victory over Cuba’s Yankiel Leon Alarcon.

6

2008 Olympic Games Champions Featherweight 57kg: Vasyl Lomachenko (UKR) At 20 years of age Lomachenko, a 2006 Junior World Champion, set the Olympic Games alight with his silky skills and gained revenge for his AIBA World Championships Chicago 2007 finals defeat to Albert Selimov by beating the Russian in the first round. His prowess in the ring was recognised as he was named as the Val Barker trophy recipient for being the best boxer of the tournament.

Lightweight 60kg: Alexey Tishchenko (RUS) Having won featherweight gold in Athens in 2004, Tishchenko became only the fourth boxer to win two Olympic gold medals in two different classes. The 24-year-old is regarded by many as the best pound-forpound boxer in international boxing following victories in the 2005 World Championships and World Cup.

Light Welterweight 64kg: Felix Diaz (DOM) A pocket dynamo who got the home crowd behind him by wearing the Dominican Republic and the Chinese flags on his robe, 24-year-old Diaz stunned the boxing world by beating the reigning champion Manus Boonjumnong of Thailand in the final to claim the Dominican Republic’s only gold medal at the 2008 Games and the first boxing gold medal in the Dominican Republic’s history.

7

2008 Olympic Games Champions Welterweight 69kg: Bakhyt Sarsekbayev (KAZ) Asian Games champion and World University Games winner, Sarsekbayev came of age in Beijing, repaying the many faithful who have supported him since he won bronze at the 2002 Asian Games. The 26-year-old claimed Kazakhstan’s fifth Olympic boxing gold medal and became the “Almighty” from Almaty conceding only 23 points in five bouts on his way to Olympic glory.

Middleweight 75kg: James DeGale (GBR) The 22-year-old from Hammersmith delighted his many fans with a typically determined and gritty run to the final, beating 2004 Olympic gold medallist Bakhtiyar Artayev (KAZ) in the quarters before wrapping up a niggly affair with Cuba’s Emilio Correa Bayeaux in the final. “Chunky” rated his 8-3 win over the former Olympic champion as the best win of his career.

Light Heavyweight 81kg: Zhang Xiaoping (CHN) The surprise of the tournament 26-yearold Zhang pulled off an incredible run to win gold in the 81kg class. His victory followed Zou’s earlier record-breaking achievement to become only China’s second Olympic boxing gold medallist. Having only been on the international scene since 2005, Zhang’s triumph goes down as one of the most impressive of the tournament.

8

2008 Olympic Games Champions

Heavyweight 91kg: Rakhim Chakhkiev (RUS) Arguably the bout of the tournament, the 91kg final between Chakhkiev and Italy’s Clemente Russo was all power. The 4-2 winning margin said it all and Chakhkiev’s delight in gaining revenge for defeat to the Italian in the AIBA World Championships Chicago 2008 final was plain to see at the sound of the final bell. A long time Russian star since he first broke onto the international scene in 2001, the 25-year-old from Tobolsk claimed Russia’s 32nd gold medal in Olympic boxing.

Super Heavyweight +91kg: Roberto Cammerelle (ITA) Incredibly silky smooth for a big man, Cammerelle, 28, was all class as he captured the hearts of his home country to power to Olympic glory, beating China’s “Great Wall” Zhang Zhilei in the final. The “Professor” proved too quick for all his opponents as the southpaw added Olympic gold to a bronze medal in Athens and a 2007 world championships title.

Olympic Special Moments New Official Draw Ceremony - an “Outstanding Success”

The International Boxing Association (AIBA) President Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu declared the Official Draw Ceremony for the Olympic Games boxing competition, which took place on the eve of the tournament, an “outstanding success” following its redesign into an open and transparent occasion. “This is what the new AIBA is all about,” he said to media following the draw. “Everything is transparent, everything is clear. As you can see by the feeling of content in this room, everybody is extremely pleased with how the draw was completed and now we look forward to a very exciting competition starting tomorrow.”

team delegations and media, saw all 283 boxers from 77 countries allocated positions for the start of competition. AIBA Advisory Council members - all IOC members - conducted the draw of countries while AIBA Executive Committee members completed the draw of positions. There were three surprise omissions prior to the draw with 2007 lightweight world champion Frankie Gavin (GBR), bantamweight Gary Russell (USA) and flyweight Molla Getachew Ambaw (ETH) all failing to make weight.

The draw, conducted in front of a packed room full of IOC members, AIBA Executive Committee members,

Olympic Special Moments AIBA Evening AIBA took advantage of the rest day during the Olympic Boxing competition to host guests, officials, team representatives and Olympic dignitaries for an AIBA evening, which included a dinner where many new AIBA initiatives were introduced to the audience. Top of the list was the unveiling of the AIBA World League in partnership with IMG while the AIBA President Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu also presented a new

promotional brochure and video, detailing the directing AIBA is taking towards an exciting and prosperous future. For more on the World League, turn to page 36. To view the official AIBA promotional video, visit http://www.youtube.com/user/AIBABoxing

Academy venues confirmed at dynamic AIBA Extraordinary Executive Committee meeting The International Boxing Association (AIBA) Executive Committee took further impressive steps to reform the sport of boxing at its Extraordinary Executive Committee meeting held during the 2008 Olympic Games at the Beijing Grand Millennium Hotel on August 18 by approving many key proposals including the selection of the 1st AIBA Boxing Academy, the host of the 2009 Junior World Championships and approving new Competition and Technical rules. The AIBA President Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu opened the meeting thanking all Executive Committee members, ITOs and referee and judges for their full cooperation towards making the 2008 Olympic Games the most successful Olympic Games ever. “The whole competition has been clean, honest and transparent and fully reflects the new AIBA reform,” Dr. Wu said. “The IOC President Dr. Jacques Rogge has said that AIBA has done an excellent job. All the NOC presidents and secretary generals who have come to watch boxing have all been impressed and this must continue. The new Disciplinary Commission and Code of Conduct for all officials and staff are two key initiatives which have been integral in improving the performance across all areas of boxing. We must maintain the highest level of judging and retain these excellent standards.” The key decision of the meeting saw the Canadian city of Bécancour, in the province of Québec, and Moscow, Russia both selected to host AIBA’s new innovative Boxing Academy. The picturesque city of Bécancour will receive the honour of opening the first Academy after winning a secret ballot 18-10. The timing of the opening of the second Academy in Moscow will depend on the progress of the first Academy. In other major decisions: The capital of Armenia, Yerevan was selected as the host city of the 2009 AIBA Junior World Championships. Projected dates for the tournament are May 22-31.

IOC member He Zhen Liang from China with AIBA President, Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu

New AIBA Technical and Competition Rules were approved to come into effect on September 1, 2008 including the following key changes: • Change of rounds from four of two minutes to three of three minutes (effective from January 1, 2009); • Removal of scoring jury; • Change of weight categories for women and youth girls to be aligned more closely with men to feature 11 weight categories: 46 kg 48 kg, 51 kg, 54 kg, 57 kg, 60 kg, 64 kg, 69 kg, 75 kg, 81 kg and +81 kg (effective from January 1, 2009). The AIBA Executive Committee announced its full support for including women’s boxing in the 2012 Olympic Games and agreed to develop a proposal and submit it to the IOC in the coming months. Domingo Solano Garcia (DOM) was named as the new President of the Americas Confederation while AIBA Executive Committee member Mr. Osvaldo Rafael Bisbal (ARG) was named as AIBA Vice President in the place of Mr. Guzmán. What the Athletes said... “I am very happy to win a medal in boxing for India. All credit goes to my coaches and my parents, especially my father who went to a far-away temple to prey for my success.” 22-year-old police inspector and part-time model Vijender Kumar (IND) after his 75kg quarterfinal win against Ecuador’s Carlos Gongora to guarantee himself and India at least a bronze medal.

«“Price is tall but it was easy to demolish him. I looked for a sparring partner today - and he was it. The victory is nothing else than another step to the Olympic gold. I won in a way I do not really like because I like boxing on a technical level. I prefer winning 20-0 than the way I did today.” Super heavyweight world champion Roberto Cammarelle (ITA) after convincingly beating Great Britain’s David Price (GBR) in the semifinals, stopping him in the second round RSCH.

“I admire the discipline and camaraderie that this team has because when we work as a team we get good results. With six guaranteed medals and two more possibilities out of ten boxers, I have to say ‘thank you,’ not only to the other coaches but also to the youth coaches who trained these kids for much more than a year.”

“All my life I have been waiting for today. I went through so much, hurt so much but I’ve been trying my hardest.” 51kg Olympic champion Somjit Jongjohor (THA) after beating Cuba’s Andris Laffita Hernandez in the final

“I thought about my father, my hero, Irwin Johnson. It makes my heart hurt that he’s not here with me but he’s watching in the Bahamas and I know that he loves me. I’m a five-star boxer, there’s not a boxing style I can not do. There is no particular punch I can’t throw. We go in with all the toolbox. We need a screwdriver, we get a screwdriver. We need a hammer, we throw a hammer.” Toureano Johnson (BAH) after pulling off an exceptional 9:4 come-from-behind victory over Olexandr Strets’ky (UKR) in the 69kg preliminaries “It wasn’t easy. I was desperate because I didn’t know him, I didn’t know his style and even though I was confident before the bout I got desperate. My father (1972 67kg Olympic champion Emilio Correa) gave me so much good advice and I’m trying to follow it. My dream is to become an Olympic champion just like him.” Emilio Correa Bayeaux (CUB) after beating Asian Games champion Elshod Rasulov (UZB) in the 75kg quarterfinals

Cuban head coach Pedro Roque “It’s brilliant, I can’t believe it, I’m over the moon.”

Paddy Barnes (IRE) after reaching the 48kg semifi nals. AIBA Boxing News 3rd Edition 2008 - July - August - September

“I didn’t know I was down. I thought I was up, when my coach started yelling to me to start throwing punches. There was so much going on in the crowd, when I stood there at the end I thought I was up.” Raushee Warren, who was the first two-time American boxing Olympian in 30 years, after “running” during the closing seconds of his 9:8 loss to Oksung Lee (KOR) in the 51kg preliminaries.

“The responsibility was really getting to me as no team had won more than two gold medals in boxing (in Beijing) and my win brought Russia’s second gold. We can say that the total performance of the team was successful.” 60kg gold medal winner – Alexey Tishchenko (RUS) “This means a lot because it’s the first time in 24 years that the Dominican Republic has won a medal in boxing. Now I have the chance to make history and win gold.” Felix Diaz after guaranteeing the Dominican Republic a boxing medal for the first time since 1984 (Pedres Nolasco won a 54kg bronze medal) after he beat Morteza Sepahvandi (IRI) in the 64kg quarterfinals.

“I did everything I could to fight for my family, my country and my friends. I did everything I could to please my country. These Olympic Games are the first for me and I did not expect such immense support from my compatriots in the tribunes, it was so amazing.” 69kg gold medal winner – Bakhyt Sarsekbayev (KAZ).

“I am very happy to win the gold medal. I want to thank my parents, my fans who came to Beijing to cheer for me and our people who support me, they give me the power to win. I phoned my lovely wife and my parents and they are so happy, they were crying because of my victory.” Badar-Uugan Enkhbat (MGL) after pulling off a sensational 16:5 victory over Leon Alarcon Yankiel (CUB) in the Bantamweight 54kg final.

“I am pleased to have fought in all three bouts, it’s a big achievement. I am the first boxer from Botswana to make it this far in the Olympics and I am part of an organisation called Right to Play. I think my achievements will teach children that playing is not only about toys but about using your body too.” Ikgopoleng Khumiso (BOT) after losing to eventual 54kg gold medallist Badar-Uugan Enkhbat (MGL) in the quarterfinals.

“In Athens 2004 I almost got a gold medal when I was leading but I lost for some reason. It was quite regretful so in the past four years my coach told me to be careful and cautious for this competition. Even last night when I was sleeping, I thought about what I should do if I fell behind and what I should do if I took the lead.” 48kg gold medal winner – Zou Shiming (CHN)
