AIBA President’s Message Annus Mirabilis for AIBA Welcome to the latest issue of “Boxing News,” which looks back over the most remarkable 12 months in AIBA’s history. It was a year which saw the introduction of the World Series of Boxing, and of women’s boxing into the program of the Olympic Games for the very first time. You can read more about both of these developments on the following pages, as well as the Junior World Championships in Yerevan which attracted a record number of participating countries as AIBA took a World Championship event to Armenia for the first time. We repeatedly broke new ground at the XV AIBA World Championships, with the ”Road to Milan” training camp in Assisi leading to record numbers of participating countries and a completely open scoring system that resulted in not one official protest after 554 bouts. We also introduced a new format for the AIBA President’s Cup in Baku and we look forward to returning to Azerbaijan for the 2010 AIBA Youth World Championships. Leading on from the official evaluation program of international referees and judges that we introduced in the first half of the year, in Milan we also saw the first World Congress for Referees & Judges. This provided the ideal platform to showcase many new initiatives, including the new R & J Manual, the AIBA Boxing Academy and the AIBA Grant Program, all of which I know will revolutionise boxing in the years ahead. It has indeed been a momentous 12 months, but the year ahead promises to be just as exciting with the AIBA Women’s World Championships and the AIBA Youth World Championships as well as the first Youth Olympic Games, the Commonwealth Games, the Asian Games and the first SportAccord Combat Games. And with WSB due to launch later in the year, I can say with confidence that we are truly entering a golden age for our sport.

AIBA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
the AIBA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS MILAN 2009 Final honours even between Italy and Russia World and Olympic champion Roberto Cammarelle rounded off a perfect day for the hosts Italy at the end of the XV AIBA World Championships in Milan. The super heavyweight beat Ukraine’s Roman Kapitonenko 10:5 to send the home crowd into ecstasy after they had earlier seen another Italian, Domenico Valentino, win the lightweight title. The Mediolanum Forum was rocking when Cammarelle started his final against Kapitonenko. The super heavyweight final was close in the first round, 3:3, but the Italian steamrollered his opponent thereafter with Kapitonenko receiving two standing eight counts. Cammarelle also picked up the award for Best Boxer of the tournament, voted by the media. Olympic and European champion Vasyl Lomachenko completed his medal collection by winning the featherweight gold medal. At the tender age of 21 the Ukrainian has become the holder of all three major amateur titles available to him. The final was just as easy as his previous four bouts in Milan, beating Sergey Vodopyanov of Russia 12:1. “I did what I had to do,” said Lomachenko, whose combined score in Milan was 63:7. After a first round tied at 3:3, home favourite Valentino switched into top gear and, with the Milan crowd’s frantic support, cruised to the first World Championship gold medal of his career with a 9:4 victory over José Pedraza
of Puerto Rico. The 25-year-old lightweight’s progress is gradual: he was third in Mianyang (2005), second in Chicago (2007) and now first. In the day’s first final, 2008 Olympic silver medalist Serdamba Purevdorj won Mongolia’s first-ever World Championship gold medal after a close match against 2006 European champion David Ayrapetyan, an Armenianborn boxer competing for Russia. After the first round, the two were tied at 3:3, then the slightly taller Asian took a three-point lead in the second round and went on to win the clash of the two southpaws, 10:5. At flyweight (51kg), the more accurate 23-year-old McWilliams Arroyo of Puerto Rico dominated the first round, winning 3:1 against the surprise finalist from Mongolia, Tugstsogt Nyambayar. Arroyo, a Panamerican and Central American champion, increased his lead in the second period to 10:2, then cruised to victory 18:2 and the first gold medal for his country in amateur boxing since 1974 when the legendary Wilfredo Gómez became world champion at 54kg. The European silver medalist at 54kg, Detelin Dalakliev of Bulgaria, a defensive specialist, kept dancing and waiting for a chink in the armour of 24-year-old Russian Eduard Abzalimov. The Russian, former junior world champion and World Cup winner, could not find the key to the Bulgarian’s style and although Abzalimov came back strongly in the final round it was too little, too late and Dalakliev won the gold medal for Bulgaria, 5:3.

AIBA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Roniel Iglesias of Cuba justified the light welterweight seedings by overcoming 17-year-old Frankie Gomez of the USA. The first seed connected with several good headshots in the second round after a tied first period. The youngest finalist of the Milan event was no match for the World Cup winner and Olympic bronze medalist, who won 8:2. Jack Culcay-Keth of Germany upset Andrey Zamkovoy of Russia, the runaway favourite for the welterweight (69kg) title. The shorter German was tactically superior to Zamkovoy, who had beaten Serik Sapiyev of Kazakhstan in the semi-final. Culcay-Keth was a surprise silver medalist at last year’s European Championship in Liverpool and now, with a 7:4 victory, he is a world champion. Abbos Atoev, the highly favoured Uzbekistani world champion from two years ago in Chicago at light heavyweight, gave no chance to his Armenian opponent Andranik Hakobyan in the middleweight final. Hakobyan was not an outsider by any means, having won the World Cup last December in Moscow, but by the end of the second round the shorter, more powerfully built Atoev was ahead 8:0, eventually running out a 9:0 winner. In a thrilling light heavyweight final, Artur Beterbiev, the 2006 European champion, outlasted Asian champion Elshod Rasulov of Uzbekistan. Rasulov was ahead most of the time, avoiding head to head exchanges but connecting on quick jabs and hooks. However, the physically stronger Russian caught him twice, once in the second round and once in the third with devastating blows to the head. Rasulov was saved by the mandatory eight count, but Beterbiev finally won 13:10, to the huge delight of the crowd. After four lost finals, Beterbiev’s success was a welcome one for the Russians and heavyweight Egor Mekhontsev was out to repeat the feat against top seed Osmai Acosta of Cuba. Mekhontsev’s pedigree - a spectacular win in the semi-finals against Oleksandr Usyk of Ukraine - promised a second Russian gold medal and the big heavyweight did not disappoint, beating Acosta by a decisive margin, 12:2.

AIBA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
DRAMA AND EMOTION AT THE MEDIOLANUM FORUM The XV AIBA World Championships Milan 2009 provided some unforgettable drama and emotion, recorded for posterity on film, online and, with a special commemorative book due out later this month, also in print. Here, “Boxing News” takes time to reflect upon the 11 men who climbed to the top of the winner’s podium at the Mediolanum Forum.
48KG – PUREVDORJ SERDAMBA (Mongolia) The 24-year-old Olympic silver medalist from the capital city of Ulanbaatar, coached by Bandi Damdinjav, became the first man from Mongolia to win an AIBA World Championships gold medal. It was the third World Championships of his career and he has become, quite simply, Mongolia’s national hero. Southpaw Serdamba beat two European champions during his long road to the gold medal - Hovhannes Danielyan of Armenia and former AIBA world champion David Ayrapetyan of Russia.
51KG – McWILLIAMS ARROYO (Puerto Rico) McJoe Arroya won a bronze medal at the 2007 AIBA World Championships, but in Milan his twin brother McWilliams won the first gold medal for Puerto Rico since the legendary Wilfredo Gómez in 1974. Arroyo, the 24-year-old Panamerican champion and former Olympic and World Championships quarterfinalist, stopped Yoon Kyung Min of Korea and Norbert Kalucza of Hungary before beating Olympic bronze medalist Yampier Hernandez of Cuba, Ronny Beblik of Germany and, in the final, Tugstsogt Nyambayar of Mongolia.
54KG – DETELIN DALAKLIEV (Bulgaria) The experienced 26-year-old Dalakliev, coached by the 1980 Olympic flyweight champion Petar Lesov, has been a member of the Bulgarian national team since 2002. Among the many medals he won in major tournaments before Milan was a bronze medal at the 2003 AIBA World Championships. One of the best defensive boxers in the world, his six opponents at the Mediolanum Forum mustered a total of just five points against him. His biggest win was in the semifinal, when he out-pointed Beijing Olympic silver medalist Yankiel Leon of Cuba.
57KG – VASYL LOMACHENKO (Ukraine) The 21-year-old Olympic champion, winner of the Val Barker Trophy and leading points scorer for any weight in the AIBA World Rankings, Vasyl Lomachenko of Ukraine was considered the best boxer in the world. He defeated all of his opponents in Milan with consummate ease, including the reigning AIBA world youth champion Oscar Valdez of Mexico and the 2007 bantamweight world champion Sergey Vodopyanov of Russia. In 2010 Lomachenko moves up to lightweight, the weight he will compete at in the 2012 Olympics.
60KG – DOMENICO VALENTINO (Italy) It was a case of third time lucky for 25-year-old Domenico Valentino, the 2004 European bronze medalist. At the AIBA World Championships he won bronze in 2005, silver in 2007 and then, finally, he struck gold on home territory in Milan. A double Olympian, also named AIBA Boxer of the Year 2009, Valentino defeated Jose Pedraza of Puerto Rico in the final but his biggest challenge came in the quarter-final where he won a heroic battle against the Panamerican champion, Idel Torriente of Cuba.
4 AIBA BOXING NEWS | NR. 5 2009 | OCTOBER - NOVEMBER - DECEMBER
AIBA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 64KG – RONIEL IGLESIAS SOTOLONGO (Cuba)
The 21-year-old Olympic bronze medalist and 2006 world junior lightweight champion, Roniel Iglesias had the rare distinction of being the only Cuban gold medalist at the 2009 AIBA World Championships. A member of the Cuban national team since 2005, he is trained by 2008 AIBA Coach of the Year Pedro Roque Otano. Iglesias won against young Scott Cardle of England in a great quarter-final contest, he beat veteran Uranchimeg Munkherdene of Mongolia in the semi-final and then the talented 17-year-old Frankie Gomez of the United States in the final.
69KG – JACK CULCAY-KETH (Germany)
This 24-year-old from Darmstadt was a European silver medalist, a Beijing Olympian and a quarter-finalist at the 2007 AIBA World Championships. Culcay-Keith was born in Ecuador, but he has been boxing for Germany since 1997. He is also a member of the German army. In Milan he beat five very strong opponents: Hossam Bakr Abdin, the best Egyptian boxer; Brian Castano of Argentina; Torben Keller of Denmark; AIBA World Youth Championships silver medalist Botirjon Mahmudov of Uzbekistan; and, finally, the favourite for gold, Andrey Zamkovoy of Russia.
75KG – ABBOS ATOYEV (Uzbekistan)
The 2007 lightheavyweight champion dropped down a division in Milan but was still too good for all-comers. Born in the village of Qulkhatib in the Vabkent district of Bukhara Province, Atoyev, the Asian champion, is coached by Sharaf Hudayberdiyev. He won six contests in Milan, including against fellow Beijing Olympian Konstantin Buga of Germany in a very close bout; Olympic bronze medalist Vijender of India in the semi-final; and AIBA World Cup winner Andranik Hakobyan of Armenia in the final.
81KG – ARTUR BETERBIYEV (Russia)
The 24-year-old European champion went one better than two years ago in Chicago, when he took home an AIBA World Championships silver medal. Resident in Moscow but born in Dagestan and proud of his Chechen roots, Beterbiev’s final in Milan, against Elshod Rasulov of Uzbekistan, was one of the best contests of the entire tournament. After winning gold for the first time, it is a reasonable bet that Beterbiev celebrated by doing what he loves best: playing on his sea scooter and watching a film starring his favourite actor, the Italian Adriano Celentano.
91KG – YEGOR MEKHONTSEV (Russia)
The 25-year-old reigning European champion, former European junior champion and 2005 AIBA World Championships quarter-finalist finally became a world champion in Milan. In his six contests at one of the toughest weight categories in the competition, he beat the very best, including local favourite and defending champion Clemente Russo, European light heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk of Ukraine, 2005 silver medalist Elchin Alizade of Azerbaijan and, in the final, the Olympic bronze medalist Osmay Acosta of Cuba.
+91KG – ROBERTO CAMMARELLE (Italy)
The script could not have been better written for the 29-year-old Milanese policeman, defending his title in his home town in front of his adoring fans. The Olympic champion defeated strong opponents in AIBA World Junior Championships bronze medalist Michael Hunter of the USA, Rok Urbanc of Slovenia, veteran Kubrat Pulev of Bulgaria, Olympic silver medalist Viktor Zuyev of Belarus and Roman Kapitonenko of Ukraine. Cammarelle was also voted Best Boxer of the Tournament by the media.

AIBA PRESIDENT’S CUP
THE AIBA PRESIDENT’S CUP Azerbaijan’s Maharramov takes Europe 2 to victory Europe 2 defeated Europe 1 in the 2009 AIBA President’s Cup on the final day of competition at the Serhedchi Olympic Sport Complex in Baku, Azerbaijan on the 11th of December. With Emil Maharramov in front of his home fans and Alexis Vastine of France and Semen Grivachev of Russia adding individual titles to their overall tally of 19 wins, Europe 2 took the title by just three points. They ended on 58, with Europe 1 on 55. Asia 1 were third on 36. The new format for the AIBA President’s Cup, pitting eight Confederation teams against one another, with two from America, two from Asia, two from Europe and one each from Africa and Oceania, proved a great success with boxers as well as the local fans, who turned out in force on finals day, no doubt encouraged by the prospect of seeing two of “their own” in action.

AIBA PRESIDENT’S CUP
Asia had the best possible start on finals day with three wins out of three. The longer reach of Kazakhstan’s Birzhan Zhakypov (Asia 2) kept Miguel Diaz Luis of the Dominican Republic (America 2) at arm’s length in the 48kg final; at flyweight, Suranjoy Singh of India (Asia 1), named Boxer of the Tournament, trounced 2007 AIBA World Championship bronze medalist Nordine Oubaali of France (Europe 2); and Shayimov Orzubek of Uzbekistan (Asia 1) got the better of an out-of-sorts John Joe Nevin of Ireland (Europe 2). If Europe was the dominant Confederation then Ukraine was the strongest country, taking no less than three individual titles while no other country won more than one. Roman Kapitonenko (+91kg), Oleksandr Usyk (91kg) and Sergiy Derevyanchenko (75kg), all representing Europe 1, were convincing winners while American success came in the shape of Oscar Raphael Valdez of Mexico (57kg) and Carlos Gongora of Ecuador (81kg), both representing America 1. Sadiq Eynullayev was the first of the Azerbaijanis to take centre stage in front of a raucous crowd eager for an individual title to celebrate. Eynullayev’s performance was spirited and it drew warm applause but it was not enough to defeat Vastine, the 2008 Olympic light welterweight bronze medalist who was always in control. As things turned out, that proved to be merely the appetiser as far as the vast majority of the spectators were concerned, for in the very next bout they got what they were looking for. Emil Maharramov, the 2005 AIBA World Championships bronze medalist, rolled back the years in a thrilling welterweight final against Russia’s Suhrab Shidaev (Europe 1). With his southpaw stance making life awkward for Shidaev, Maharramov opened the scoring towards the end of the first round but was warned for holding and had to take a standing eight-count in the second. But by the time they reached the third round, it was no holds barred as both men gave it all they had while the crowd went wild. To their delight Maharramov held on for a 6:4 win, a win that arguably decided the destiny of the 2009 AIBA President’s Cup. OCTOBER - NOVEMBER - DECEMBER | NR. 5 2009 | BOXING NEWS AIBA 9

AIBA JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
THE 2009 AIBA JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS Armenia steps up to the plate The VII AIBA World Junior Championships, for boxers aged 15 and 16, was AIBA’s first international event of 2009. It was held in the Armenian capital city, Yerevan, at the Karen Demirchyan Sport Complex from the 22 to 30 May. This event takes over from the AIBA World Cadet Championships, held for the first and last time time in Baku, Azerbaijan in 2001 and 2007. On the eve of the tournament Mr Arman Muradyan, President of the Armenian Boxing Federation, said: “It is the first time a World Championship is being held in Armenia and great efforts are being made to stage the championship on an excellent level.” A total of 255 boxers from 42 nations took part, the number of countries breaking the record of 41 nations in Turkey in 2006. Hosts Armenia entered a full complement of 13 boxers, as did Belarus, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine, while China, Ecuador, Montenegro and Thailand took part for the first time in the history of the AIBA Junior/Cadet World Championships. Notable absentees included Azerbaijan, France, Mongolia, Mexico, Wales, Italy, Japan, Egypt, Brazil, Canada, Estonia and the Philippines.

AIBA JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
As expected, Russia collected the most number of gold medals, winning five in all, while Cuba went home with two. Uzbekistan and Ukraine each collected one gold medal, while Ireland, Belarus, Armenia and Germany won titles for the first time at this level. A record 15 countries were represented in the finals, while for the first time, 16 nations claimed at least one medal including Ecuador, Israel and Moldova. Sergey Sobylinskiy (50kg), Magomed Abdulamagomedov (63kg), Andrey Yegorov (66kg), Idris Shakhmanov (75kg) and Gasan Gimbatov (+80kg) of Russia won their weight categories, while other Russian favourites such as Magomed-Rashid Dzhabrailov (46kg), Khuseyn Baysangurov (48kg) and Tigran Uzliyan (52kg) just missed out. The youngest gold medalist was 15-year-old local hero Koryun Soghomonyan (46kg), while new German star Theo Krechlok (48kg), powerful Irish team captain Joe Ward (70kg) and the strong Mirzobek Hasanov of Uzbekistan (80kg) also made a big impression. The Lithuanian team established a national record by picking up four medals, while traditionally strong nations such as the United States, Turkey, Romania, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria and Korea failed to win a medal. Most of the boxers were representing their countries at the international level for the first time and many will see the 2012 London Olympics as a realistic target. AIBA President Dr Ching-Kuo Wu expressed his appreciation and congratulations to the President of Armenia, Mr. Serzh Sargsyan and the President of the Armenian Boxing Federation, Mr Arman Muradyan, on an extremely successful AIBA World Junior Championships.

WORLD SERIES OF BOXING
THE WORLD SERIES OF BOXING Q & A with WSB COO Ivan Khodabakhsh With less than a year to go before the start of the first regular season in the World Series of Boxing, “Boxing News caught up with the globe-trotting WSB Chief Operating Officer Ivan Khodabakhsh for the latest news from the AIBA initiative that is set to revolutionise the sport of boxing.
Boxing News: What is the latest news about the WSB franchises? Ivan Khodabakhsh: We have just recently signed the heads of agreement with the franchisee for Beijing. This is the third firm commitment in the Asian conference after Astana and Delhi. In Europe we have already signed similar agreements with Moscow and Milan and are at an advanced stage of negotiations with interested parties in Germany and Turkey. The WSB was also one of the AIBA projects presented at a recent reception at the UK House of Commons to celebrate the achievements of boxing there. We are confident that we will sign a London-based WSB franchise and four US-based franchises very soon. BN: And what about the boxers? How many have signed up for the WSB and who are they? IK: Over 100 boxers have now signed participation agreements with the WSB and AIBA. The list includes Road to Milan graduates like Shafiq Chitou from Benin, who see the tournament as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, as well as several Milan and Olympic medalists, like World Champion Detelin Dalakliev from Bulgaria. This offers the franchises an interesting mix of young talent and experienced champions at the international level, in addition to the national AIBAregistered boxers that they will recruit directly.
BN: What can we expect to hear from the WSB over the next few months? IK: We will have a complete picture of the final franchise cities in early 2010. We will hold a major event in April where the top 20 to 30 boxers will be auctioned and well over 100 other boxers will be up for selection in a draft process. The WSB headquarters in Lausanne will then start working actively to support the franchises as they build up their squads and start to promote their individual identities.

R&J World Congress
THE AIBA WORLD CONGRESS FOR REFEREES & JUDGES Introducing the new AIBA Referees and Judges Management System
The first AIBA World Congress for Referees & Judges took place at the Pieve Emanuele City Gym, Milan on the 30th of August, 2009, two days before the start of the AIBA World Championships. It attracted 200 delegates from throughout the AIBA boxing family, including coaches and other national federation officials as well as more than 100 referees and judges. Under the auspices of Terry Smith, AIBA Referees and Judges Commission Chairperson, the Congress outlined plans for the new AIBA Referees and Judges Management System.
The purpose of the new system is to ensure perpetual transparency and fair judging in the sport of boxing; to develop a comprehensive system for AIBA R&J management including centralised control; to improve the quality and performance of R&Js at all levels of boxing; and to guarantee standard performance and decisions by R&Js in all boxing competitions. The new system should also help to motivate R&Js and create an entire career structure within AIBA for R&Js after their active careers are over. AIBA recognises that it must accept responsibility for R&Js at all levels. Additionally, now that AIBA has launched the World Series of Boxing, the R&J Management System must cater for the supply and development of R&Js required to facilitate this program. The new system focuses on the following key areas:
• R&J Qualification Management • R&J Quality Enhancement Management • R&J Certification/Classification Management • How to become an AIBA R&J • AIBA R&J Test Procedure • R&J Appointment Management for Competitions • R&J Performance Management - R&J Evaluation • R&J In-Competition Management • Financial Management for Overall R&J Management • R&J Academy Management • WSB R&J Management • R&J Commission Management
22 AIBA BOXING NEWS | NR. 5 2009 | OCTOBER - NOVEMBER - DECEMBER
R&J World Congress The first stage of the new system was the selection of the 42 2-Star R&Js for 3-Star assessment at the AIBA World Championships in Milan and another 25 candidates were selected for assessment at the AIBA President’s Cup in Baku. Around 40 of the aforementioned who achieve the 3-Star grading will be invited to the AIBA Boxing Academy in Bécancour, Canada to participate in the inaugural AIBA International Instructors Certification Course.
AIBA will continue to allow all R&Js to use record books but during the course of 2010, with the new database system nearing completion, each R&J will have, instead of the book, a membership card including data such as participation records.
AIBA’s aim is to have 120 3-Star R&Js at any one time, available to be dispatched to AIBA-controlled and -approved events throughout the year. Of these 120 designated AIBA 3-Star R&Js, 60 will be selected by AIBA to officiate at the WSB competitions. After the completion of the WSB season, these R&Js will be free to officiate at AIBA events. A list of AIBA-approved 1-Star and 2-Star R&Js was also completed at the end of 2009.

AIBA Database update
THE AIBA DATABASE Putting all the information at your disposal Work on a new AIBA Database has been on-going throughout 2009, led by Database Manager Federica Nenzi. The aim of the new AIBA Database is to assist in the administration of international boxers, officials and events while also providing accurate and timely information for the benefit of boxers, officials and media alike via a link from the AIBA Web site.
The AIBA database captures the details of international boxers and officials, and provides an online registration, results and media service at tournaments. Available information will include historical data, results and boxer profiles. Access to the database is now possible from any computer around the world via a username and a password. AIBA staff can control access through an administration interface. The database is integrated into the Web site: as well as presenting pages and segments of content for the site, the database also uses the search functionality of the site. By utilising the database to deliver certain content to the Web site dynamically, AIBA will offer visitors an extremely functional experience. Giving visitors the power to search and retrieve information in a very flexible way will increase site “stickiness,” or the amount of time the visitor spends on a Web site.
For each major event a tournament “tree” is available. This tree contains details of each boxer entered, including: • Name of boxer • Country • Flag of country • Opponent • Result • Subsequent contest • Profile of each boxer The details entered for each contest automatically update the boxer’s personal file. In addition, during the AIBA World Championships in Milan and the President’s Cup in Baku, the results service of the database allowed AIBA to provide results in real-time via the Web site. This is possible thanks to the direct data exchange between the database and the scoring machine. This information will give users the opportunity to easily elaborate statistics and reports, such as medals by country or by boxers or officials by number and it also allows AIBA to automatically update and display the AIBA World Rankings, which will generate a huge amount of interest.
24 AIBA BOXING NEWS | NR. 5 2009 | OCTOBER - NOVEMBER - DECEMBER
AIBA Database update
The section “profile” carries details of every registered boxer, coach, official or AIBA staff member. The profile is generated from the database, but also from the tournament tree and boxer’s ranking and it provides a review of a career and/or performance.
Potential Developments The many additional items that might be available in the future: • Shopping Card: a secure site for the purchase of AIBA products and other suppliers products. • Members Forum: an interactive subsite that would allow any registered AIBA member to log on and enter into “conversation topics.” • Webstreaming: live coverage of AIBA events. • Images: photo galleries would be created for separate events, competitions and bouts that would allow the user to find images more easily. Photos of a boxer would also be accessible through his or her profile.
Each of the National Governing Bodies affiliated to AIBA now has the opportunity to manage a page on a micro-site setting out basic details such as: • • • •
• VoDs (Videos on Demand): with either a link to AIBA’s YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/ aibaboxing) or embedded directly in the database, users would be able to view clips of bouts and perhaps even behind-the-scene footage of events.
Date established Contact details Key officials Hyperlink to the federation Web site
Starting with the next AIBA events, the database will make it possible to have an online registration and accreditation system, making the process quicker, easier and more secure. Each boxer/official will register annually under a unique AIBA number and allocated AIBA card. In the near future, AIBA’s boxing footage will also be integrated and will be accessible to visitors in a library that will contains clips filed by tournament, bout number and round number.

AIBA World Rankings
THE AIBA WORLD RANKINGS Bringing order to the sport The AIBA World Rankings, introduced in August 2009, will help revolutionise the sport of boxing as much as any innovation introduced by AIBA last year. Based on performances throughout the year in AIBA World Ranking events, the lists will give the boxers an extra incentive to perform at their best and they will provide the public with a tangible way of identifying who is who in any given competition. The rankings were updated in September following the AIBA World Championships and will be so again in April after the AIBA Youth World Championships. For the current standings please visit www.aiba.org, while set out below is the way the system works. 1. World Ranking Points allocation 1.1
The World Ranking points for each boxer are accumulated over a two year “rolling period
1.2
The World Ranking points will be awarded for each event maintained in full for four (4) events (to place additional emphasis on recent performances)

The World Ranking points of the fifth event onwards will then be reduced by 25% in equal decrements for the remaining events (at most seven (7) events will be included in the ranking system)
1.4
The Official AIBA World Boxing Ranking is issued after each event counting into the ranking system

The experienced but youthful Cuban Idel Torriente (69kg) as well as his compatriots and former Olympic medalists Yankiel Leon (60kg), Rosniel Iglesias (64kg), Emilio Correa (75kg) and Osmay Acosta (91kg) were all victorious. The Venezuelan Olympic medalist Alfonso Blanco also took part but he was defeated by Correa 15:4 in the preliminaries. The Mexican Olympian and AIBA youth world champion, 19-year-old Oscar Valdez (57kg), was defeated by 21-yearold Robson Conceicao of Brazil 6:5 in the final but his Mexican teammate Braulio Avila (51kg) kept the home fires burning by defeating Olympic bronze medalist Yampier Hernandez from Cuba in a close final, 8:7.
Two new faces on the Cuban team, AIBA youth world champions Erislandy Savon (+91kg), who is the nephew of three-time Olympic champion legend Felix Savon, and Jose Angel Larduet (81kg), won their first senior gold medals at this year’s championships. But alongside the strong Cuban team, there were many talented new boxers as many countries tried to find their best athletes in the first year of the new Olympiad. Surprisingly, the second most successful boxing nation in the region, the United States of America, did not take part. Argentina, Ecuador, Chile, Bahamas, Barbados and the Virgin Islands also missed the event.

AmericaN Continental Championships
THE 2009 American Women’s Continental Championships Ecuador centre stage once more Ecuador hosted a wonderful opening ceremony in October at the Fedeguayas Hall in Guayaquil, the country’s biggest city, for the VI American Women’s Championships. The former continental champion and current professional world champion Jessica Bopp of Argentina made a special guest appearance. The Ecuadorian Boxing Federation organised the tournament after it successfully hosted the American Junior Championships in Quito, Ecuador in April. Women’s boxing has strong roots in the American continent, with athletes competing in Canada and the United States since 1994. This year, the American Women’s Championships welcomed a record-breaking number of athletes, with 62 boxers entering from 13 different nations. One of the biggest stars of the tournament was twice AIBA world champion 25-year-old Ariane Fortin of Canada (75kg), who won the middleweight category and gained her fourth continental title since 2005.
Three-time Panamerican champion Adriana Araujo of Brazil (60kg) won her fourth gold medal in Ecuador, while twice Panamerican champion Paola Benavides of Argentina (48kg) was awarded her third title. Overall, Brazil took first place in the team ranking, collecting four gold medals, while Canada, the United States and Argentina claimed two gold medals apiece and 10 nations won at least one medal each in Guayaquil.

AmericaN Continental Championships
THE 2009 American Junior Continental Championships Cuba demonstrates its strength in depth The Panamerican Junior Championships for 15- to 16-year-old boxers were held in April with great success in Ecuador’s capital city, Quito. Seven nations entered 44 boxers in the competition but, surprisingly, Canada, Mexico, Argentina and the United States did not compete. The relatively small South American country of Ecuador is a typical rising amateur boxing nation. The team trains with Cuban coaches and Ecuador’s greatest senior boxer, Carlos Gongora, was a quarter-finalist in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. One of the most powerful nations in amateur boxing, Cuba collected four gold medals while Puerto Rico took three and the Dominican Republic and host country Ecuador claimed two victories each in the finals.
Yunior Ribalta (50kg), Robeisy Ramirez (52kg), Yunior Valdez (54kg) and Arlen Lopez (57kg) of Cuba, Dagoberto Aguero (46kg) of the Dominican Republic, Jeison Minda (63kg) of Ecuador and Freddy Ortiz (48kg) all won and showed promise for a strong 2010 AIBA Youth World Championships.

ASIaN Continental Championships
THE 2009 Asian Men’s Continental Championships Hudayberdiyev makes history for Turkmenistan The XXV Asian Senior Men’s Championships were hosted in Zhuhai City, Guangdong province, China in June. Zhuhai, which means Pearl Sea in Mandarin, is a garden-like seaside tourist city with a sub-tropical climate, beautiful beaches and convenient transportation. This year, 119 boxers from 18 nations competed in the traditional Asian Championships, which are organised every two years. Hosts China fielded a full team of 11 boxers, along with Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, India and Mongolia. Serdar Hudayberdiyev of Turkmenistan was a graduate of AIBA’s Road to Milan training camp in Assisi and he reached the quarter-finals of the AIBA World Championships in Milan. In Zhuhai City the 23-year-old won his country’s first gold medal in the history of the Asian Championships. Vijender, the Olympic bronze medalist and the first Indian boxer in history to win a medal at the Olympics, beat twice AIBA world middleweight champion Abbos Atoyev of Uzbekistan in the preliminary round before losing in the 75kg semi-finals to Zhang Jianting of China.
It was left to Vijender’s compatriot Suranjoy Mayengbam Singh (51kg) to win India’s first Asian title for 15 years, beating the local favourite Li Chao in the final. And new Thai star Wuttichai Masuk (57kg), 19, won his final against young Beijing Olympian Khurshed Tadjiyabev of Uzbekistan. Twice world champion Serik Sapiyev of Kazakhstan (69kg), Olympic silver medalist Zhang Zhilei of China (+91kg), Asian Games winner and AIBA World Championships silver medalist Elshod Rasulov of Uzbekistan (81kg) also won their respective weight categories. Host nation China collected three gold medals, while Uzbekistan, Khazakhstan and Thailand won two apiece and India and Turkmenistan one. In all, 13 of the 18 competing nations took home at least one medal. Other strong Asian boxing countries such as Tajikistan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Qatar and Iraq did not take part in the event, while the Syrian team competed in the Mediterranean Games in Pescara, Italy which were also held in June.

EUROPEAN Continental Championships
THE 2009 European Women’s Continental Championships Ochigava’s golden hat-trick The VII European Women’s Championships held in Nikolayev, also known as Mykolaiv, in southern Ukraine in September was the first large-scale women’s boxing event in which the athletes competed with the knowledge that they have the green light to participate in the 2012 London Olympic Games in one of three weight categories: 51kg, 60kg and 75kg. The inaugural European Women’s Championships took place in France in 2001 and has been held every two years since 2007. Before then it was an annual event. This year 113 boxers from 24 nations entered the tournament, with the majority of athletes, 15 women, fighting for victory in the 57kg weight category. Twice AIBA world champion 22-year-old Sofiya Ochigava (57kg) of Russia collected her third European gold medal, winning her final against Yulia Tsiplakova of Ukraine by a huge margin of 14:0, winning the votes for Best Boxer of the Tournament. The world’s foremost woman boxer, twice AIBA world champion Katie Taylor of Ireland (60kg), claimed her fourth European title in Nikolayev. The 23-year-old has set an incredible record in women’s boxing, having last lost a bout over two and a half years ago. The reigning AIBA world champion Karolina Michalczuk (54kg) of Poland won the bantamweight category 10:1, while 21-year-old Lotte Lien (69kg) of Norway sprang a great surprise with her gold medal, knocking out Sweden’s Klara Svensson, twice AIBA World Championships medalist, in the first round. Mirroring the European Youth Championships, Russia won four gold medals while seven other countries, namely Sweden, Ukraine, Poland, Ireland, Turkey, Norway and Romania, took one gold each.

EUROPEAN Continental Championships
THE 2009 EUROPEAN YOUTH CONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIPS Russia assert themselves in Szczecin The Polish port of Szczecin hosted the XXI European Youth Championships in August when the continent’s best 17- and 18-year-old boxers fought for glory. On the second preliminary day, in a twist of the tournament, the athletes competed in Schwedt, a German town about an hour away.
Azerbaijani Elvin Mamishzade (48kg), Armenian Karen Aylazyan (51kg), English Martin Ward (57kg), Lithuanian Evaldas Petrauskas (60kg), Irish Jason Quigley (69kg), German Tyron Zeuge (75kg), Croatian Dino Mansour (+91kg) and four Russians, Radmir Abdurakhmanov (54kg), Aleksandr Besputin (64kg), Yevgeniy Tishchenko (81kg) and Aleksey Yegorov (91kg), all won gold in their respective weight categories.
The Championships were a great opportunity for the 217 young boxers who entered from 35 nations across Europe to prepare for the 2010 AIBA Youth World Championships in April, the qualifying event for the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore later this year. The Russian Federation won the team ranking with four gold medals. Azerbaijan, Armenia, England, Lithuania, Ireland, Germany and Croatia each claimed one gold and 19 other nations collected at least one medal.

AFRICAN Continental Championships
THE 2009 AFRICAN MEN’S CONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIPS Mauritius provides names for the future Vacoas, the largest city in Mauritius, hosted the XVI African Men’s Championships in July when the Togo Boxing Federation was unable to organize the event in Lomé in May because of serious financial problems. The competition took place at the Mauritian National Boxing Center, where 85 boxers from 16 nations and a total of 10 Olympians participated in the continental championships. While four of the traditionally powerful African boxing nations - Egypt, Tunisia, Kenya and Nigeria - did not take part in the event, Morocco, Algeria, South Africa, Botswana, Ghana and Cameroon competed with many young and talented boxers. Fans should look out for Moroccan Badreddine Haddioui (60kg) and Algerian Nacereddine Filali (64kg), two up-and-coming athletes whose skills developed greatly this year.
In the 54kg final, Abdelhalim Ouradi of Algeria defeated the biggest star of the tournament, the 31-year-old 2008 Beijing Olympic Games bronze medalist Bruno Julie, back after a long break following his Olympic success. Julie’s Mauritian compatriot John Colin (57kg) made history at the championships by winning the gold medal at featherweight. The 18-year-old beat the experienced Mmoloki Nogeng of Botswana 7:4 in the final. Algeria, Morocco and Cameroon were the three top nations, each winning three gold medals while Ghana and Mauritius collected one gold each. AIBA World Ranking No. 2 Abdelhafid Benchabla of Algeria (81kg), AIBA President’s Cup silver medalist Willy Thomas Essomba of Cameroon (48kg) and African champion Manyo Plange of Ghana (51kg) all won their respective weight categories.

ThirD AIBA Technical & Rules Commission Meeting
In a hectic autumn schedule, AIBA President Dr ChingKuo Wu had several meetings with heads of state and government. The Prime Minister of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, gave Dr Wu his assurances that boxing in Uzbekistan will remain strong because of efforts made by the Uzbekistan Boxing Federation. President Wu said that he hoped the Uzbekistan Boxing Federation would one day participate in both women’s boxing and the WSB.
The AIBA Technical and Rules Commission held its third commission meeting in Tashkent, Uzbekistan from 7 to 9 November, 2009. The Technical and Rules Commission will present their recommendations for the approval of the next Executive Committee meeting, to be held from January 28 to 30, 2010 in Xiamen, China. This was the first commission meeting for which the host federation paid all expenses of all participants, including air fares and accommodation. AIBA would like to convey its sincere thanks and great appreciation for the warmest hospitality rendered to its members.
The President of Georgia, Mr Mikheil Saakashvili, received Dr Wu at the Presidential Palace and expressed his desire to see boxing return to its golden age in Georgia, as well as his appreciation of the AIBA reforms, in particular concerning transparency and fair play as it benefits smaller countries like Georgia. Dr Wu said he hoped that the Georgian boxing team would participate in the Youth Olympic Games as well as the women’s boxing program at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
2010 AIBA Congress The 2010 AIBA Congress wil be held in Busan, Korea, from Thursday 28 October to Friday 5 November.
At a reception organised at the House of Commons in London to recognise the achievements of amateur boxing and the contributions it makes towards Britain’s sporting legacy, Dr Wu introduced AIBA’s “Road to London” program to prepare underprivileged boxers for the 2012 Olympic Games. Among leading British politicians at the reception were Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell, Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe, former Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott and Ed Balls, Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown provided a foreword to the meeting. Dr Wu also met with the President of Russia, Mr Dmitry Medvedev, on the occasion of the inaugural Russian National Sports Forum in Kazan. At the opening ceremony, following President Medvedev’s address, President Wu delivered a speech on AIBA’s reform and future development plans. The forum focused on preparations for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi as well as the 2013 Universiade in Kazan, when boxing may appear on the program of the World Student Games for the first time.

2010 AIBA World Youth Championships: Changes
EC member Abdelsamad dies aged 68
The French Federation has with drawn its bid to host the 2010 AIBA Youth World Championships and they will now take place in Baku, Azerbaijan. The dates have changed to April 20 to May 2. This event is the only qualifying event for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games which will be held from August 14 to 26 in Singapore.
Dr Ismail Osman Abdelsamad, an AIBA Executive Committee member, former AIBA vice-president and Honorary President of the Egyptian Boxing Federation, died in October at the age of 68 after a long battle with illness.
Ring Official Licensees According to the Technical & Competition Rules, from January 2010 all AIBA-approved events should use rings manufactured by one of the AIBA Official Licensees: adidas/Sportcom; Fujian Wesing Sports Goods; Top Ten. As with gloves and headguards, AIBA approves competition rings (7.80m x 7.80m x 1.0m), therefore all international or national level competitions should respect the AIBA Licensing Programme.
Dr Abdelsamad, formerly President of the Egyptian Boxing Federation and a former Secretary General of the Egyptian Olympic Committee, was the second longest-serving member of the AIBA Executive Committee, having served since 1986. Born on 3 April 1941 in Ismailia, Egypt, Dr Abdelsamad was the father of three sons. With a PhD in physical education, he was also President of the Arabian Boxing Federation as well as a former Chairman of the AIBA Referee & Judges Commission. Dr Abdelsamad held more than 15 academic posts, supervised 45 scientific theses, supervised 66 researches in different fields and published 62 books or papers. He also held more than 15 governmental positions and nine Olympic positions. “It is with great sorrow that we observe the passing of a great man who gave more than 40 years of his life to sport in general and served boxing in particular,” said Major General Wagih Nada, President of the Egyptian Boxing Federation. “We wish his soul to rest in peace and send our condolences to his family and to the boxing family all over the world.”
Technical Delegate Appointments Dr Abdallah Bessalem, AIBA Vice-President and President of the African Boxing Confederation, has been appointed as AIBA Technical Delegate for the XVI Asian Games, which will be held from November 12 to 27, 2010 in Guangzhou, China.
