Welcome to this special edition of Boxing News. The past 12 months have been historic for boxing in many ways and this end of year review provides the ideal medium to recognise and appreciate this in all its forms. The year 2007 has been an exceptional one. AIBA, thanks to the tremendous work of the entire AIBA family, reached some incredible highs during the year and achieved many of its objectives. Boxing now has an exceptionally bright future and all of us can be proud of what has been accomplished. With three Executive Committee meetings, an Extraordinary Congress and revolutionary AIBA Cadet and Senior World Championships having taken place, 2007 will hold a special place in all of our hearts. We can now look forward to building on the groundwork which has led AIBA to where it is today and continuing boxing’s transformation into the sport we know it can be.

AIBA Executive Committee
AIBA Extraordinary Congress
Leading the way for the future of Boxing The AIBA Executive Committee was inspirational in its commitment to taking AIBA into a new era in 2007. The 33 members met three times during the year making key decisions each time in order to revolutionize boxing for the benefit of future generations. The opening meeting held in the hometown of AIBA President Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu in Taipei, Taiwan came just four months after the election of Dr. Wu, providing the opportunity
to reaffirm the AIBA Commission chairman and unveil an AIBA Reform Committee which was charged with revolutionising AIBA and the sport of boxing. The second AIBA Executive Committee meeting was held in the heart of the Olympic movement – in the IOC headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland. The full range of proposals from the AIBA Reform Committee received the full backing of the members, giving the project their unanimous support ahead of the
Extraordinary Congress at the end of the year. The third and final meeting took place on the eve of the Extraordinary Congress and AIBA World Championships Chicago 2007, not only confirming Milan, Italy as the host city for the 2009 World Championships but setting up what was to be a defining moment in the history of international boxing one day later.

AIBA Boxing News Special Edition - 2007 Review
AIBA Tournaments AIBA 2007 Cadet World Championships Baku, Azerbaijan- August 31-September 8 The World’s Best Cadets Deliver In Baku The outstanding AIBA Cadet World Championships held in the capital city of Azerbaijan, Baku proved to be another excellent illustration of AIBA’s new transparent and fair officiating with nine countries walking away with Cuba’s Rey Plat gold medals across after winning gold 13 weight categories. in the 70kg class
Thirteen nations were represented in the finals before Azerbaijan, India, Russia and the Ukraine led the gold medal count with two apiece while USA, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Cuba and Puerto Rico all claimed one each. The 6th edition of the world championships for boxers aged 15 and 16 proved to be another excellent example of AIBA’s new direction thanks to the high level of competition, the camaraderie between the participants and the absence of any official protests. India’s Vipin Kumar (50kg) was named the tournament’s best boxer while hosts Azerbaijan topped the points and medal ranking with 36 points followed by Russia (27 points) and Uzbekistan (24 points).

AIBA News Historic moment for AIBA President with Olympic Museum unveiling
AIBA President Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu addresses the audience during the opening ceremony
A very proud and jubilant AIBA President Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu unveiled his Olympic Tennis Centre and Olympic Museum in Xiamen, China in November, a project he had been working on for five years and is fully dedicated towards the Olympic Movement and its principles.
Sixty-one-year-old Wu, an IOC member since 1988, was joined by IOC Vice President from Japan Mr. Chiharu Igaya, Mr. Cigui Liu, the mayor of Xiamen City, members of the AIBA Executive Committee and other dignitaries and friends for the opening ceremony, which took place on the conclusion of the Good Luck Beijing boxing test event for the Beijing Olympic Games. The Olympic museum is the first to be stationed in China and boasts historic Olympic footage and data, lecture rooms and a collection of Dr. Wu’s own Olympic memorabilia.

The official opening of the Olympic Museum (from left to right: the Mayor of Xiamen City, Mr. Cigui Liu, the IOC Vice President from Japan, Mr. Chiharu Igaya, & Dr. Wu)
“This is a very proud moment for me, to be here on this special occasion with my dear colleagues and friends” Dr. Wu said at the opening of the museum. “I wanted to share this historic moment as Dr. Wu wanted to share the historic moment with friends I have never made and colleagues such a personal investment such as towards a project which will be a great this. This moment marks the source of education, inspiration and hope realization of five years hard for generations to come.” work, investment and devotion

AIBA Boxing News Special Edition - 2007 Review
The new AIBA logo unveiled at the Extraordinary Congress
