Hello Readers Here comes the sun. At least in theory - as we now know, thanks to NASA, that while the sun may have his hat on, it’s got a rather large hole in it. What we are in for this summer is anyone’s guess. Speaking of guesswork, who won the European elections I wonder? Someone needs to keep the unelected few in Brussels from gagging Google. Oops, too late. No such censorship here though and there’s every reason to look forward to summer 2014. And not everything in your plans need involve the big golden ball in the sky. There’s the World Cup; now without Golden Balls Beckham himself, but still good in all weathers. Despite taking place in Brazil. In football news closer to home, Wolverhampton Wanderers FC has clawed its way back into The Championship, so congratulations are in order. They definitely played in all weather. Then there’s golf; a game which rarely runs foul of Mother Nature. And we have a bumper feature all about it in this edition. But if that’s not how you roll - because you prefer wheels to balls - then check out our jam-packed motoring section. Or why not skip straight to all things to make the body beautiful with our special feature on beauty and beauty clinics - the stuff on having perfect teeth is sure to make you smile. And it’s all arriving in good time for the many indoor social functions which are on the horizon, so there’s no excuse to not look at our fashion pages too. See, not everything is weather-related - especially not our magazine, which celebrated its birthday in May. For four years now, Wolverhampton West has been brightening up your day - come rain or shine. Never once here has rain ever stopped play. Long may it continue. Enjoy your read...

Happy Birthday Wolverhampton West By Rob Taylor A feeling well known to every writer is that someone else before them - alive or usually dead - has said it better; more succinctly, more incisively or more emphatically. So on the landmark occasion of Wolverhampton West magazine’s fourth anniversary, we’re going to leave it to the people who know, our advertisers, to tell you why this esteemed organ of the local press sits far above the rest. After all, as Elmore Leonard says, ‘All the information you need can be given in dialogue’ and, besides, according to Mark Twain, ‘Most writers regard the truth as their most valuable possession, and therefore are most economical in its use.’ But first, a word from our Sales Director, Gisella Wiley: “Our magazine covers the very best of the local area; appealing to male and female readers alike. We started with a circulation of 20,000 four years ago but are now up to 24,500, over two months. “Being a small business ourselves we are happy to help other local companies flourish and take 04
great pride in attending to a wide spectrum of business: everything from hairdressers to gardeners. “Our top team of writers, tireless group of 30 delivery agents and graphic designer Ed Wilde from Studio 28 all strive to contribute their very best each month and I thank them all. “But most of all, our success is down to the readers and support of our advertisers.”
Magali Henn - T.A.Henn rhampton “We have been advertising in Wolve May West magazine since the launch in been a 2010 and from the first edition it’s ation very informative and interesting public rs.” about local life; targeting local reade mers “A perfect platform to keep our custo es, up to date with our novelties, servic offers and competitions, we routinely have customers coming into the store asking to view items that have been bonus advertised in the magazine. Another is that Gisella and Geoff are delightful and always a pleasure to deal with.”
Louise Clarke – Nuffield Hospital Wolverhampton ton “We have advertised in Wolverhamp and West Magazine over the last 3.5 years a have always found Gisella and Geoff ely extrem and great pleasure to work with trouble professional. Nothing is too much te for them and they always accommoda last our needs, even at times when it is and zine minute! It is a fantastic local maga not our patients love reading it. We will s hesitate to continue advertising. Thank work.” Gisella and Geoff, keep up the good
Not forgetting Gisella herself too, of course, who together with her partner and our Editor Geoff Hall, started the magazine from scratch four years ago. We’d let you hear from Geoff as well, but he’s a writer, so he’s gagged for the time being.
So, as promised, it’s over to our advertisers… Peter Smith – General Manager, Mercedes-Benz, Wolverhampton “Congratulations on celebrating 4 years enz in business on behalf of Mercedes-B of Wolverhampton.Working with both years Gisella and Geoff over the last few in has been extremely beneficial both our ting promo and ting marke terms of te in business activities. We will not hesita tise adver recommending local businesses to with them, their service is excellent.”

The Local Property Market by Nick Berriman As I write this article the BBC 2 series on the life of Estate agents is being screened.
are properly funded and not just accept what they say. If the agent is related to someone who makes an offer or is related to a seller that must be disclosed in advance.
One of the reviews said that Estate agents, for once, were not being maligned and I think it is one of the few examples of media coverage to have given a fair and unbiased picture. One of the agents said that if, at a party, he told people what he did the response was such that he might as well have said he was a mass murderer!
The Property Misdescription Act ensures that particulars are accurate and not misleading. Some of the eulogistic and hyperbolic language (sic!) which was used in the past must now be able to be justified. Two miles from the shops can no longer be called within easy walking distance! If there is a power station on the opposite side of the road it is not necessary to declare its existence but neither the words nor the photographs used in the sale particulars must give the impression that it is not there. To describe the position as rural or idyllic would not be acceptable!
We know we have a bad image resulting from the misdeeds of a few black sheep in the profession but it has become a stereotype in the media and a guaranteed way of producing a cheap laugh. Most reputable agents have worked to gain professional qualifications, be it through the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors , the National Association of Estate agents or the Association of Residential Letting agents and, as such, are governed by strict codes of conduct. Many firms are also members of the Ombudsman Scheme which enforces rules of conduct and has powers of sanction where there has been misconduct. The Estate agents Act controls much of what happens. For instance all offers must be submitted in writing as quickly as possible and it is illegal to pretend to have received an offer which does not exist. Agents must make sure that people who make offers 08
There is also strict financial control. All clients funds must be kept in separate accounts which are subject to audit so, you see, there is probably more control than is generally known. The one thing we do want, as one of the agents on television said, is for some form of licencing before someone is able to set up as an Estate agent. As of now anyone can set up shop with no experience, no qualification and no code of conduct. The Estate agents Act and the PMA will still apply but it’s a bit like shutting the stable door‌ So before you have any dealings with an Estate agent make sure that he, or she, has qualifications and is a member of the Ombudsman
scheme. I would like to advise you which agent you should use but the Editor might frown on that so I must leave you to use your imagination! I try to give a monthly commentary on market conditions. In March my firm’s Tettenhall office agreed an outstanding number of sales (yes, Mr. Editor, I can prove that!) It was not the best month ever but it was the best for several years. April also proved to be a good month for sales, well up to our in house target and in both months new instructions ran at a particularly high volume.I try not to make unjustifiable claims in this column but in March, April and so far in May (this is written on the 15th) new instructions have been at approximately two per working day. However good one may be as an Estate Agent unless there are plenty of new instructions it will be to no avail. A good number of new instructions keeps the market fresh and keeps things moving. So that is good news. Despite the good level of sales and the higher amount of confidence we still have not seen the rising prices reported from London, the South East and various hot spots like Bristol, Bath and Aberdeen. Our price levels are still significantly lower than in 2007 - reports are anywhere between 5% and 16% - but all we really want is a strong and stable market as we all remember that what goes up too quickly usually comes down almost as fast!

Interior Design a small to average size room, can actually have a detrimental effect.
Colours, fabrics, lighting and co-ordination are the basics for any interior design. The most important room for any design must surely be the living room, which is the first one guests will be shown into, followed by the dining room.
scheme will have to be built up so as not to clash. If however the carpet is to be changed, a co-ordinated colour scheme of curtains, upholstery, cushions, and throws can be chosen. Exposed wood flooring, appropriately stained and covered with rugs, can actually make the planning of the rest of the decor a lot easier, and in certain circumstances can actually add light to the overall aspect.
When choosing fabrics, firstly consider to what use they will be put. Colours and patterns are very important because you will build up the rest of the decor based on these. With patterned fabrics it is important to consider the size of the pattern. A large pattern in a small room can be over-powering, but if it is used on an item of furniture as a main feature, then it could enhance the whole room. The shapes of patterns on curtains should never be such that they make any room look small, which can happen if say, there are horizontal shapes in a low-ceilinged room. What is needed in that room is vertical pattern to give it extra height.
But what about the walls? Whatever is on the wall plays an important part of the whole visual effect of any room. Digital technology has created a revolution in the style of wall coverings in just the first few years of this century. Walls can be covered with traditional wallpaper or fabric but this new technology can offer patterns and prints to include 3D imagery, photographs and geometric designs.
Before considering any decor plan, it is important firstly to look at the carpeting. Is that floor covering going to remain? If so any colour 10
There is a trend not to cover all the walls in a room with the same pattern. Different styles, patterns and coloured papers on separate walls can enhance particular features adding interest to the overall look of the room. However, there is a trend to wallpaper door and cupboard panels. Be careful though, in some circles it is considered a ‘bit cheap’ and in
Whatever you have done with fabrics, flooring, and wall coverings, they can be totally wasted if the room is dingily lit. Light probably plays the most important part in the whole internal decor plan. If the room is being taken back to basics before decorating, consider having electrical wiring installed into the wall and decide the outlets for wiring before the plastering of the room is complete. Wall lighting is now an important part of home decor and need not be the ‘old hat’, 2-pronged fitting with shades balanced on the bulbs that was once common in pubs trying to create an intimate atmosphere, and failing miserably! There is now a complete new range of wall light fittings, and these can include spot lights to highlight a particular aspect of furniture, painting or a plant. Lighting should be a combination of wall and ceiling fittings, enhanced by a selection of table lamps. Energy saving light bulbs now enables a room to be lit at a fraction of the cost we faced previously. They are made into standard shapes and candle bulbs. They are still sold by the wattage but because they use a lot less energy, a lower wattage bulb will be needed to give out the same light. For instance, a new 11W bulb will give out the same light as an ordinary 60W bulb. New materials and new ways of using traditional materials have made a chandelier far more affordable than ever before. Once the preserve of the wealthy, chandeliers can now be installed into an average living room and together with the newly developed, concealed small light sources, will be a very practical proposition. Internal decor is always a matter of personal taste. Manufacturers and retailers today realise this and can provide an enormous selection of home style products, enough to cater for everyone.

Never Trust a Storyteller By Rob Taylor - believe it if you will and I don’t “many believe that the buildings in his book, The Old Curiosity Shop, were based on those in the town.” Furthermore, “Dickens was very taken with the architecture of the town, and for that reason, he based The Old Curiosity Shop on The Unicorn Public House, which was later known as Naughty Nell’s.” Hmm, I wonder.
Never let truth get in the way of a good tale. It’s a maxim oft-remembered by storytellers; like the loveable old rogue ensconced in the corner of the local pub, holding court on matters beginning wistfully with the fabled “when I was a lad…”, the devilish among us prefer not to get bogged down with absolute fact and instead embellish and reinvigorate the past with illusory fancy. Charles Dickens has it succinctly sussed when he writes, ‘It is a pleasant world we live in; a very pleasant world. There are bad people in it, but if there were no bad people there would be no good lawyers.’ The same is true of storytellers. Did King Charles II really hide out in that actual tree? Did Admiral Horatio Nelson really say “Kiss me, Hardy” on his deathbed? Monty Python says so and I sometimes wonder
12
whether such nonsense is as close to the truth as other assertions, such as his war cry that ‘England expects that every man will do his duty.’ If Nelson’s arch enemy Napoleon can have Jacques-Louis David paint his mother into the crowd assembled at his coronation, when she famously refused to attend, then I’m sure Nelson’s spin doctors can credit him with such high-grade oratory. He’s a hero after all; and heroes must speak just so. A liberal use of revisionist history can often be indistinguishable from what actually took place, filtered as it always is through the prism of the storyteller’s bias and then endlessly recycled through time a la Chinese Whispers: ‘send reinforcements to the rear’ becomes ‘send three and four pence for the beer.’ Now, believe it or not, it is the quaint market town of Shifnal in Shropshire, which brings me to such a random stream of consciousness. For it is here that the Dickens’ connection first rears its head. According to Wikipedia
But - wait - there’s more. “It is widely believed that Shifnal was the origin of P. G Wodehouse’s fictional town Market Blandings.” I’m sure everything in literature must be inspired by something, somewhere and I’m sure there is some nebulous connection between Dickens, Wodehouse and the town; I’m just a little suspicious of such vague, inarguable assertions, particularly when said assertions end with “it’s true, honest!” And, although surely it’s meant to be tongue-in-cheek when in the case of the official Shropshire tourist site’s claim that Dickens’ Little Nell is buried in Tong Church, you get the idea. Maybe it’s because I’m always wary of anyone who ends every sentence with an exclamation point or maybe it’s because there’s a lot of shifty, spurious stories about Shifnal out there. What I can tell you about Shifnal is this: I’ve been; I liked it. And that’s no lie.

Helps Local Parents Keep Down The Costs Over 170 local parents picked up bargain baby goods whilst raising money for charity at a volunteerrun sale organised by the Wolverhampton NCT branch at the beginning of March, making it the branch’s most successful sale to date. Parents picked up everything from babygros to buggies, saving money and bagging a bargain, while also stopping products going to landfill and also raising money for NCT – the UK’s largest charity for parents. All items came from local parents, who sell on their unwanted baby goods, which are always in ‘nearly new’ condition. The NCT Nearly New Sale, sponsored by Persil Non-Bio and Comfort Pure, was organised and run by 25 local volunteers from the Wolverhampton branch who took on roles including promotion, organisation, refreshments and collecting entrance fees or donations.
Thanks to their hard work, the sale made over £3,000 which will go towards supporting the charity’s work, including the running of local support groups that help to relieve some of the isolation and loneliness faced by new parents and encourage new friendships, whilst also offering support. Rachel, Nearly New sale Coordinator said: “We were delighted with the success of our recent NCT Nearly New Sale. It was great to see the community come together and recycle their toys, baby clothes and equipment, offering many local parents the opportunity to bag a bargain. The sale couldn’t have happened without our hardworking team of volunteers. The next Sale will be on Saturday September 13th and we need to encourage more people to join the team, either as a buyer or seller.” The Wolverhampton branch is one of NCT’s networks of over 300 local branches in the UK, dedicated to supporting local

Supporting Penn Fields School
The race was the best event yet and this was helped by the presence that Nuffield Health had at the event.
Heavy showers and grey skies failed to deter 2300 runners who turned up for the Market Drayton 10k event held on Sunday 11th May. Nuffield Health had a Marquee where free sports massages were carried out, health checks, blood pressure checks, haemoglobin and glucose checks.
18
Goody bags were handed out to all runners at the end of the race with Nuffy Bear proving to be a hit with everyone! The Rotary Club of Tettenhall has arranged funding from a charitable estate to allow Penn Fields School to purchase much needed equipment. The event next year will be fully sponsored by Nuffield Health and will be called the Nuffield Health Market Drayton 10K.

Feeling a little
belo w par t o day ? all negative thoughts, I am a capable person and I can handle anything that comes my way.”
Down some green stuff… Why not try the ultimate feel-good drink - a yummy green smoothie. This is the best treat you can give yourself when you’re feeling low in energy, unmotivated or a little stressed out. Plus, you get your five-a-day in one go and feed your cells with all the nutrients they need to keep you mentally and physically strong. Try this. A handful of baby leaf spinach, an apple or a pear, half a banana, a cup of water and a squeeze of lemon. Whizz it all up together in a blender and drink up. I promise you’ll feel amazing!
Buy yourself blooms…
It’s very easy to get bogged down by daily life. Very often our days can feel like ground hog day and before we know it another week has passed us by. The commute to work, taking care of the kids, the endless emails, the housework, the bills, needy friends and family, the list goes on. Stress, worry and anxiety come at us from all different directions; it’s how we deal with them that’s the key. When we can learn to take control of our stress levels we’ll feel stronger, happier, more confident and calmer.
So here are 6 simple and easy instant pick-me-ups to reduce stress and put a smile on your face. The ultimate ‘bad day’ mantra… Affirmations and mantras are a fabulous way to change your thoughts and rewire your brain to feel better. Try this mantra the next time you’re feeling overwhelmed or anxious. Repeat as many times as you can during the day. If needs be, set a reminder on your phone or put some sticky notes around your home. “I let go of and release 20
Simple but effective. Buy yourself flowers or a houseplant. Nature is a fabulous healer, allow a little serenity into your life and let nature lift your mood. Or how about putting your wellies on and getting yourself out in the great outdoors! Nature has a magic way of absorbing the stresses and strains from our bodies; we always come back from a long walk feeling so much calmer and more inspired.
Go Gangnam Style…
from athletes, entrepreneurs, pop stars and yes, even every day folk like you and me! Before you leave the house take a couple of seconds to close your eyes, visualise how you’d like to see your day pan out. A perfect day free of any tension or stress. Notice how effortlessly your day flows, notice how you look and feel and how you act with those around you. Just spend a minute or so visualising your ideal day. Then open your eyes and enjoy a wonderful day.
Eat cake! We all have days when we want to just hide under the duvet; it’s called being human. If none of the above tips do the trick (but they will!) and you’re still feeling like you don’t want to face the world, why not just ride the feeling whilst it lasts. Everything in life passes, so don’t try and resist it! Put your joggers on, watch an old classic movie and treat yourself to a piece of lemon cake and a steaming cup of hot chocolate. Tomorrow is a brand new day! Don’t feel bad, but don’t make it everyday!
Often when we’re having a bad day we feel really sluggish, we move slower and our body language changes. Music is the best mood enhancer there is, as it gets the feel-good hormones flowing and gives us that instant ‘pick-me-up’ we need. Dig out your old CD’s or select an uplifting track on your iPod and move your body. Just ten minutes of serious moves is guaranteed to make you feel happier in no time and is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
Visualise your day in advance… Visualisation is a powerful tool you can use to change your negative thoughts and beliefs and is practiced by some of the world’s most successful people,

Best Foot Forward What’s it all about? The BEST FOOT FORWARD Challenge. To have fun, running, walking, jogging or wheeling in support of local charities. BEST FOOT FORWARD is to be staged on Saturday, 12th July 2014, at Aldersley Leisure Village, when citizens of all ages, of all abilities, with wheelchairs, with pushchairs, will all be able to clock up circuits of the track – knowing that you will be raising funds for the benefit of highly deserving local charities. You can spend as long as you like within the 12 hours of the event and return as often as you choose, with a personal chip keeping tally of how many laps you have done. Every one of those laps will be releasing funds which have been donated by companies and organisations in our city in order to build a prize fund which you can unlock for the benefit of three charities - Children in Need, Compton Hospice and the Rotary Charitable Trust. This event, unique in the UK, brings together the opportunity to take exercise at your own pace, in your own time and for as long as you are inclined, while at the same time knowing that the calories you are burning off are going to improve the life of others.
To be held on
Saturday 12th July, at Aldersley Leisure Village, from 8am until 8pm. A community initiative devised by

Charmingly British Jewellery Launched in April, at its home in the Staffordshire countryside, Charmingly British is set to become a desirable, luxury brand that reflects its designer, Sue Wilkinson’s, strong connection with all that is British. “My father was in the jewellery business, and it is his passion for providing the best of British, that has driven me to design and produce this new brand of jewellery. When I tried to find something a bit different from the high street brands, I struggled to find jewellery that wasn’t imported from the Far East; even the well-known brands are mainly manufactured abroad. I put my design skills to work and produced my first collections, which we trialled last year at some of the big country events” said Sue, who has taken inspiration from her background as a riding instructor, to design her delightful bracelets. Charmingly British works with as many local companies as possible,

With two very different collections, Charmingly British has managed to offer something for everyone. The leather bracelets of the ‘Classic’ collection are designed to be sturdy enough to wear whilst working or competing, and the very individual ‘Spirit’ collection is a more delicate
Sue is hoping to work with some iconic British retail outlets, offering them bespoke collections designed especially for them.
Charmingly British has also come to the notice of gold medal winner Carl Hester MBE, who won the dressage with his team at the London Olympics. “I couldn’t be more delighted and proud to have Carl’s backing for my jewellery, when we did the photo shoot with him, he said he loves them!”
“One day I would love to see Charmingly British sitting alongside some of our best loved British brands” said Sue.

Recipe Of The Month Quick And Easy Chocolate Brownie Preparation time: 20 minutes
Serves 12
Cooking time: 35-40 minutes at 180˚C
INGREDIENTS • 4 medium eggs • 250g of caster sugar • 250g soft dark brown sugar • 200g of cocoa powder • 250g unsalted butter • 100g of self raising flour • 1 tsp of good quality vanilla extract, you can make your own, please email: mike@takefood.co.uk for advice on how to. EQUIPMENT • 9” square baking tin • heavy based pan • heat resistant plastic spoon • parchment paper METHOD
26
www.takefood.co.uk
1.
Firstly grease and line your baking tin.
2.
Then melt the butter on a moderate heat on the stove and add the sugar, cocoa and vanilla stirring until combined.
3.
Take off the heat and allow to cool for 5 minutes and then beat the eggs in one at a time until the mixture becomes smooth and glossy then add the flour beating until it becomes smooth again and then simply pour into your greased and lined baking tin and bake in the oven. It is easier to allow the brownie once cooked to cool completely before turning out of the tin onto a board.
Serving Suggestion Once cooled slice into squares or fingers, put back in the oven on a tray to warm through and serve it with a good quality ice cream and either some fresh berries or make a quick salted caramel sauce by melting 50g of soft dark brown sugar, 50g of golden syrup, 75g of butter and 100ml of double cream adding a pinch of sea salt flakes. www.facebook.com/takefood www.instagram.com/mikewhitehurst_takefood www.twitter.com/takefood mike@takefood.co.uk www.takefood.co.uk wolverhampton west magazine | june/july 2014

Bravaccio’s Competition Winner To mark the launch of their new ‘Black Country Specials Menu’ Bravaccio’s restaurant in Tettenhall ran a competition in the March/April edition of the magazine to give one lucky reader the chance to win a meal and wine for four people. The meal and wine were most enjoyable and we will be paying another visit very soon.
Many thanks to Wolverhampton West magazine for organising the evening and Steve and his team for making it so enjoyable”. Carver Wolverhampton Marathon Events - Sunday 7th September 2014 In this, the 17th year of the running of the Marathon events, the organisers are busy working behind the scenes putting in place the plans to ensure that on Sunday 7th September in West Park all the hard work will come together to make the events match their success in previous years. The Marathon events attract many competitors and supporters who all help with the fundraising cause. Many people choose to help their own good causes which of course the organisers welcome. This year the event organisers decided to form a charity partnership and it is fitting that this charity is COMPTON HOSPICE, close to so many people’s hearts. In order to carry out the good work that the Hospice does they need to generate a substantial income each year. The other charities set to benefit this year are WEST PARK STROKE
CYCLING GROUP. Based at West Park Hospital this group was formed to encourage exercise opportunities for people who have had strokes. Cycling is such a suitable form of exercise that they meet each week to cycle in West Park. Some of them even take part in the cycle event. Also set to share the proceeds raised are BROADMEADOW SPECIAL SCHOOL. Based close to West Park in Wolverhampton they help to support and develop 3 to 7 year olds with severe physical and learning disabilities. The success of the events is made possible by the dedicated team who meet throughout the months leading up to 7th September to ensure that they provide a safe and well managed event for everyone to enjoy. This, together with the generosity of the sponsors, enables people of all ages and abilities to take part and help the fundraising cause. Major sponsor Carvers Building Supplies, continue to support with their generous financial help and the
input from their dedicated and loyal staff. Last year Chair Mary Harding announced that Marston’s Brewery had increased their sponsorship and the “Banks’s 10K” was introduced into the event schedule. This year further sponsorship has been offered from Cousins Furniture who are taking the Cousins 20K Cycle event under their name. Angel Springs have also renewed their generous sponsorship this year and they will again provide all the bottled water for the runners. Further sponsors are, Greggs, Signal 107, Express & Star, Wolverhampton West Magazine, NJB Sports & Physio, Places for People Leisure, Fred Williams Cycles, Ron Flowers Sports, Veloxserv, (who sponsor the marathon website). Another new Sponsor is Charles Clark Toyota who will be supplying the lead car and back up vehicles. Each year as the event grows more companies are getting involved, both financially and offering their services. This demonstrates the popularity of the marathon events in the City of Wolverhampton. All these Companies play an important part in making the event successful. It is a pleasure working with them.
Anyone wishing to take part in any of the events can enter via Runners World or by downloading an entry form from our website

Prepare for Summer in the Garden After a wet start to the year, March and April turned out to be fairly mild. The beginning of May was wet and cold for several days, but as I write this in the middle of May things have become milder with several sunny days that brings on plants fast, but remember the nights can be chilly and a late frost can spoil the fruit blossoms and kill any tender plants put outside too soon. Plant up your basket, put it outside on mild days, but bring it back in at night if the forecast is for low temperatures. Why not plant a basket up with one type of plant for example trailing petunias for an instant effect or even a productive one with tumbling tomatoes or herbs. The end of May, beginning of June is about the right time
Tips are provided by Ann Winwood from Lealans Garden Centre, Wolverhampton
for planting out the more tender bedding plants, such as Salvias, Dahlias and Geraniums. Although we won’t have the seed raised bedding Impatiens, we will be having the new New Guinea Impatiens Divine which is resistant to Downy Mildew. Spray gooseberries against sawfly, as once you get the caterpillars on your plants they’ll strip it within a matter of days. Protect any fruit against bird damage by netting over the bushes. Trim back perennial Alyssum and Aubretia as soon as the flowers finish. Very often Aubretia will produce another batch of flowers later in the summer and into the autumn. Early flowering shrubs such as Weigela, Deutzia and Philadelphus can be pruned back after flowering ends. A neat lawn makes everything else in the garden look at its best. Apply lawn feeds and weedkillers now.
We have a new stock of MO Bacter which is a slow release organic fertiliser for lawns. This feeds the lawn over a 12 week period and contains a bacteria (bacillus sp) which is naturally found in the soil and when added to fertiliser it will consume dead material like thatch and moss, it makes it unnecessary for raking or scarification after treatment. It’s been used on our own domestic lawns and we’ve found it to be an excellent product. Although we’re rapidly approaching the warmest months of the year, give a thought to planting some seed potatoes for a Christmas crop. These should be planted in July and can be harvested ready to cook for Christmas dinner.

Using Hedging to Create Instantly Natural Gardens by Andi Way from Boningale Garden Creations Most homeowners’ need some kind of secure decorative element around their boundary partition, but have you considered hedging choosing green over stone, fencing or wood can create a beautiful natural garden. Using the right kind of hedging can enhance a garden, and provide a stunning natural backdrop that offers privacy, security and excellent protection from the elements. Natural hedging suits properties of all ages – it can create a warm
natural atmosphere in a country garden, soften the surroundings of a city garden and add structured clean lines to a modern garden. Plus, what many people don’t realise is that you can buy hedging in all growth forms, from 1 year old up to fully mature 8ft hedges in a choice of 20+ varieties. The advantage with the fully grown option is there is no need to wait ten or more years for it to mature – it’s rare that you can achieve such instant results in gardening. A good example of how hedging can enhance a property can be seen in a garden we are working
in at the moment. When we arrived, we were confronted by an 8ft tall conifer hedge, which was out of control and taking all the life and light out of the garden. We planted in its place a pregrown 6ft Hornbeam deciduous hedge. The result is a much thinner and easy- to-manage hedge, which is aesthetically pleasing with its beautifully veined green and yellow leaves. There are many varieties of deciduous, semi-deciduous and ever green hedges to choose from but it is important to select a variety according to your garden aspect and soil condition.
For further information or advice on choosing a lush green boundary partition or a privacy enhancing decorative hedge, visit www.boningale-garden-creations.co.uk or call Andi direct on 01902 376500

New Meat and Delicatessen Counter Opens at Spar Compton has always been the number one priority for the family: “Come rain, ice or snow, our customers always get their papers delivered and on many occasions when short staffed or the delivery person is ill Malcolm or I take on the role - we must be the oldest delivery boys around!”
There have been plenty of times when we’ve all been delighted to find that our local Spar shop is open; whether it has been to grab a vital ingredient to complete the Sunday roast or make an essential late-night purchase, the much-loved convenience store has often saved the day. And Compton’s Spar has long been making life that little bit easier for locals since it opened at its current location, at the Swan Centre, back in 1997. Owned and operated by the Crump family - who have been shopkeepers in Compton since 1969 - the store sells all manner of fresh products and produce, groceries, an extensive range of wines and beers, as well as having its own in store bakery. There’s also a Costa Coffee machine that 46
allows busy people to get their daily caffeine fix when they’re on the go. And that’s not all; the store also delivers newspapers and magazines and has a Post Office which boasts impressive opening hours - Monday to Saturday 6am - 11pm and Sunday until 10pm. And the latest and most exciting addition is a butcher and delicatessen counter. Joint owner Gordon Crump explains: “My brother Malcolm and I have been at our present location for 17 years, but before that chapter of the business began for us we owned two smaller shops opposite, a post office and newsagents, and Country Fayre a grocers and delicatessen. “In 1995 we decided that we wanted to give our customers better value for money, so we decided to join the Spar Group, which gave us better buying power. Providing the best levels of personal customer service
Last year the Daisy Fresh & Essential, a family owned store in Compton for 37 years, closed. It was particularly highly regarded for its butchery and delicatessen department. This was a great loss to the area when the store closed. Malcolm and Gordon quickly realised that this was too good an opportunity to miss and teamed up with Richard Hipkiss to introduce a new butchery department in Spar. Many will know that Richard worked at Daisy Fresh & Essential for over 20 years and has always prided himself on offering the highest level of customer service and satisfaction. As Richard explains: “I am a very passionate butcher and over the last 20 years have worked hard to provide only the finest, freshest and best quality meat, all sourced from local suppliers. “In store we’ve got everything from outdoor-reared pork, Shire Meadow beef, Spring lamb and flavoured and dressed chicken, in six varieties. “You will also find spit-roast chickens, in-store cooked meats, juicy handmade sausages and quality beef burgers that are simply bursting with flavour.” “There aren’t many butchers that open Monday to Saturday 7.30am - 6pm and 8am - 4pm on a Sunday, but we do.” So if you are looking for a friendly store selling premium quality produce and fresh meat all at great prices get yourself down to the Spar at Compton.

Happy 104th Birthday Frances Wilkinson At 104 years of age, Frances Wilkinson is likely to be the oldest reader of Wolverhampton West Magazine! Born in Bilston on 9th April 1910, Frances Jeanette Wilkinson (nee Clarke), has lived through two world wars and a century of change. Daughter of Frances, a teacher, and Walter, a Battalion Sergeant during World War One, privately educated Frances enjoyed her first job as a milliner at Bedford Williams in Victoria Street, Wolverhampton. In her early twenties, Frances was struck down with rheumatic fever which found her confined to a wheelchair for two years. Sent to Buxton Brine Baths for rehabilitation she was told not to marry, work or have any children as it would leave her with a heart condition. Going against this advice, Frances married husband Frank in 1937 with whom she enjoyed thirty six years of marriage until his death
in 1973. They had two children, daughters Jeanette and Carol. During the Second World War, Frances lived in various locations around the country and was bombed out of six homes, including houses in Liverpool, Coventry and Parkfields. After the war, Frances and Frank moved back to Wolverhampton where she worked as a buyer and supervisor at high street favourite Woolworths. She stayed there until her retirement at the age of 64. The couples’ daughter Carol emigrated to New Zealand. This
love of travelling must come from her mother who has been around the world not once but twice! Frances has always been a keen dancer and continued to dance until the age of 94. Ten years on, she still remembers this passion fondly. The 104 year old has had an interesting life. With two children, seven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, and another one on the way, Frances certainly has no shortage of people to share her fascinating story with.
Jumping for Compton Hospice Gavin Maiden, 38, Purchasing Director and Martin Jeavons, 23, Internet Sales, decided between them it would be great idea to do a bungee jump in aid of Compton Hospice after seeing an advert in a local magazine advertising Compton in the Park. Since then everyone at Tile Choice have backed them 100% by creating and displaying posters with collection buckets in all of their 15 stores and they have even had t-shirts made to promote the event. Speaking with Gavin and Martin, they have mixed feelings regarding the jump, Gavin has previously done a bungee jump when he was only 17 so has a good idea on what to expect. For Martin this will be his first time and shows reservation when the jump is talked about, but has said after all the support he cannot let people down and will deal with it on the day. They are hoping the jump will raise in excess of £1000 and they are on target to reach it. 48

Support For Microsoft XP ended on April 8th Most people are aware Microsoft ended their support for XP on April 8th, but what does this actually mean? Basically they will stop providing updates, which include vital security fixes to prevent hackers exploiting weaknesses found in the operating system. As a result, people continuing to use XP beyond this date are more vulnerable to hackers and viruses. Most anti-virus companies will continue to provide updates for their software to help protect you, but Microsoft are keen for

users to move over to the newer, more secure, operating systems such as Windows 7 or 8.

April Auction Review at Perry and Phillips Perry and Phillips April auction took place on the 1st (April fools day), which must have made the auctioneer a bit nervous, however everything went very well. The monthly auctions always take place on the first Tuesday of the month and start at 10.30am. Viewing for the auction takes place on the Saturday, Sunday and Monday prior to the Auction. There were approx 460 lots in the auction covering furniture, silver, jewellery, pictures, porcelain and collectables. Probably the most unusual items were a collection of Four Brass Dog Collars, the most important of which was inscribed “Lieutenant Inglefield RN-My Faithful Dog-NeroWho saved the lives of Two Men in China”. This dog collar sold for £1100 because of the inscription and because of the history of Lieutenant Inglefield who served in the first Anglo-China War and in the Crimean War and finished his career as an Admiral as Commander in Chief of North America and the West Indies Fleet. There were also three other Brass Dog Collars two of which were from Shropshire families, these sold for £210 with the other fetching £110. Also in the auction was a large collection of silver, about 60 lots, the most unusual of which was a set of six Silver Mounted Whisky Tots with Hallmarked Silver Labels dated London 1912, these were very elegant and sold for £675. There was also a Regency style Silver Tea Set sold for £360, and a small Liberty and Co Silver and enamel bowl which sold for £280. There was also a collection of silver pocket watches which sold for between £150 and £250 each. There was also a collection of old prints of the local area, the best of which was a large oak framed print of Wolverhampton Racecourse on Race Day circa 1850. This showed the racecourse when it was on the site that became “the West Park” and was owned by Thomas William Gifford of Chillington. There were also old prints of Dudley, Bridgnorth, and Tettenhall. In the furniture section there was a beautiful late Victorian Painted Satinwood Three Fold Screen with nine portraits of young ladies-sold for £450; a late 18th century Single finger 30 hour Oak long case clock with Brass dial - sold for £325. An early 20th century Oak refectory table with gun barrel Legs sold for £380 and an early 19th century oak linen chest with carved panels went for £250. The auction was very well attended with a good atmosphere and with a very pleasant tearoom and restaurant to sit in to watch the auction made for a very pleasant day. 54

GoCruise and Discover the World by Sea… Luckily for Wolverhampton residents, there are people like Jane Bowen around to steer you in the right direction! Jane manages and operates “GoCruise - Jane & Rhys” with her husband – Rhys. They are both passionate about travel and especially cruising and love to share their experiences of the vast variety of cruise lines out there – helping you choose the right cruise at the right price! It was Jane who first introduced Rhys to the joys of cruising, after becoming hooked as a child when she accompanied her parents aboard the old QE2. When asked about her favourite places to cruise; Jane said: “Each cruise holds it own special memories and to be honest, they are all my favourites! From the stunning Norwegian Fjords to Cuba where we recently spent our Silver wedding anniversary! My favourite Mediterranean stop has to be Monte Carlo. It never ceases to wow me - from the moment you sail towards the bay at dawn and see the familiar skyline silhouetted against the top of the cliff. I love helping to make other people’s memories, too”.
Rhys & Jane Bowen
Whether you have yet to discover the world by sea, have just recently dipped your toe into the water, or are an experienced cruiser – there’s no denying that cruising is a unique and exciting ‘once in a lifetime’ experience!
As well as cruise holidays Jane also organises landtours and tailor-made ‘cruise & stay’ holidays for something that little bit different, for example, you may want to include a longer stay at the beginning or end of your voyage. Being members of ABTA and holding an ATOL licence you can rest assured that any type of holiday you book is fully protected.
There really is a cruise out there for everyone, with ships of all shapes and sizes sailing to far-flung corners of the earth as well as closer to home. From ocean cruising to river cruising, expeditions, mini-breaks and more, knowing which one to choose is often a dilemma – albeit a very nice dilemma to have!

Wergs Golf Club Sunday Carvery By Gerard Winterbourne When I told Miss Emily Mortimore (For it was she.) that we were headed for a ‘Sunday lunch carvery’, she exclaimed - ‘Sounds good to me’ - tartly reminding me of the last time we lunched together at a Michelin Megastar restaurant when your correspondent felt thoroughly unfulfilled with the delicacies of nonsense cuisine and had to be fortified afterwards with cheese on toast at her Grimsby apartment.
replete - and there’s not a better one than the one at Wergs Golf Club. Located in a pleasant semi-rural setting, those wishing to enjoy relaxed Sunday dining without the usual hustle and bustle and push and shove associated with the ‘carvery experience’ will be delighted to learn that here is a carvery with a marked difference.
Regulars ‘in the know’ who don’t want to share a good thing may not thank me for passing on this secret - but the ‘hole in one’ of the Sunday carvery is to be found right on the very doorstep of this magazine at Wergs Golf ClubTettenhall. A warm welcome awaits Sunday visitors - be they members or non-members of the golf club - to
But there was no danger of that where we were going. With all the charm of a lizard I told her we were Tettenhall bound and that, as diligent diners, we should serve our readers well by putting them in touch with the gems that lie on their very own doorstep. And in the dining stakes I must declare my hand and say that when the pangs of hunger bite, there’s nothing better than a traditional carvery to make one feel

the spacious and well-appointed dining room. We were promptly greeted by friendly and efficient staff who, in the best traditions of proper dining, showed us to our table where we chatted and unwound first. After all, a Sunday lunch is to be savoured and not rushed. In keeping with all that is good and wholesome, standards across the board are particularly high so that a chap can confidently take his lady there, sure of a stressfree and comfortable ambience conducive to a happy time.
size and your correspondents soup of the day was tastier than tasty. At the carvery, roast beef, turkey, pork and ham were done to a turn and the vegetables were crisp and various - and so fresh that they could be heard chatting among themselves. (No limp and tired carrots and parsnips here!). My delicate companion just couldn’t manage the lemon tart, cheesecake, apple strudel or sticky toffee sponge - but in the best interests of you, dear reader, I was duty bound to do so. My conclusion? Delightful!
Zealand and we gave the Aussies a jolly good thrashing at The Oval. At Wergs Golf Club, an above par quality Sunday lunch certainly hits the spot. Really good food well cooked, well presented and well served by delightful staff in a relaxing environment. The Wergs Golf Club Sunday carvery experience is most certainly a fair way to dining enjoyment.

Flamingo Pink - Fine Indian Cuisine
By Rachel Sabin It’s a restaurant which many of us have walked past on our way to Sainsburys, but never ventured into. However, I was very happy to rectify this when I was given the opportunity to review Perton’s exquisite Indian restaurant and takeaway, Flamingo Pink. Walking across the car park on a chilly April evening, I realised with a chuckle that I was wearing a pair of pink heels to a restaurant with this colour in its name. I took this as a good omen as I stepped inside. From the moment I entered the restaurant, I was impressed with the modern stylish décor and light, airy feel. Evenly spaced tables complete with black leather benches and high
66
backed chairs give you a feeling of privacy, whilst also allowing you to enjoy the atmosphere of the room. Greeted by smartly dressed waiting staff, my friend Andrea and I were pleased to be shown to a booth and handed our extensive menus. Even the format of the menu impressed us with its hard front and back covers and concertinaed centre! After perusing the menu for some time, we decided upon starters of ‘Chicken Chom Chom’ – chicken in a sweet and sour sauce (£3.25) – and Lamb Tikka – lamb, marinated then barbecued in a clay oven (£3.25). A choice of twenty four mouth-watering starters, including vegetarian and seafood options, made our final decisions very difficult.
Looking through the main courses, we were fascinated by the variety of dishes available. Aside from the usual tikka, korma, Balti and tandoori dishes, the restaurant offers a variety of signature and speciality dishes. ‘Crocodile Desire’ and ‘Kangaroo Desire’ – tender pieces of meat prepared to meet your own tastes - would definitely spark the interest of the more adventurous diners. An exciting fusion of East and West can be found in meals such as ‘Lamb Linguine’ – spiced minced lamb with tomatoes and linguine pasta – and ‘Sea bass Delight’ – sea bass fillet served with coriander couscous and citrus salsa. At Flamingo Pink, there is definitely a dish for everyone. Before our starters arrived, we were pleasantly surprised to receive a free
wolverhampton west magazine | june/july 2014
poppadum each with a selection of chutneys and raithas. These satisfied our growing appetites as we eagerly awaited our first courses.
My Chicken Korma (£5.95) contained succulent chicken breast with a fabulous sweet creamy sauce and Andrea’s Murghi Masala (£8.65) – marinated chicken cooked in a medium strength sauce with a hint of minced lamb, egg and coriander, was far from dull! The shared side orders of Steamed Basmati rice (£1.95) and a Peshwari Nan (£2.50), complemented the meals perfectly.
The beautifully presented dishes arrived within a few minutes of our order being taken. Having never tasted a Chicken Chom Chom before, I was slightly apprehensive but I needn’t have been. The slightly spiced fruity sauce provided the perfect accompaniment to pieces of diced chicken, whilst Andrea described the Lamb Tikka as ‘wonderfully tender’.
A delicious ice cream based dessert menu was impossible for us to resist! For my choice, I let out my inner child and went for a banana split (£2.50). Fresh banana, chopped in half, with a filling of tropical fruit and ice cream topped with cream and strawberry sauce was a tasty option. Andrea opted for pineapple ice cream in a pineapple shell
(£2.75) - it was as pleasing on the taste buds as it was on the eyes. Whilst dining, I took the opportunity to look at the other customers in the restaurant. Families were spending quality time together, whilst friends were laughing merrily, enjoying their delectable meals. Takeaway customers were taking advantage of their ten percent discount, and others were having the ‘Ultimate Dining Experience (starter, main and accompaniment for only £9.95, Sun to Thurs). The restaurant is certainly a welcoming arena for all. As I left the restaurant, full and happy with my fantastic dining experience, I knew with certainty that those pink shoes will be walking back into Flamingo Pink in the not too distant future.
When it came to our main courses, I was reminded of an episode of Gavin and Stacey, when Stacey asks ‘Is a Korma boring?’ Well, in some restaurants it may be, but certainly not at Flamingo!

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital plaques – usually on sun exposedskin (they can be mistaken for other conditions like psoriasis). If these lesions are left untreated they have the potential to develop into a Squamous-Cell Carcinoma (SCC) • Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer Basal-Cell Carcinoma (BCCs) are a type of skin cancer that generally take the form of either a single bump or a series of small, flat bumps. Although it is rare for BCCs to spread to other parts of the body, early treatment of the lesion is very important. What are the benefits of PDT? • Non-invasive procedure, does not require an overnight hospital stay, general anaesthetic or recovery time What is Photodynamic Therapy? As a consultant led, nurse treated procedure Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a modern, highly effective treatment for certain types of precancerous lesions as well as nonmelanoma skin cancers (NMSCs). Although they are known medically as actinic keratoses, basal cell carcinomas and Bowen’s disease, your doctor might refer to them as AKs and BCCs, or simply ‘lesions’. PDT is a very different way to treat these lesions compared to conventional approaches e.g. cryotherapy (freezing), chemotherapy, radiotherapy or surgery. It takes advantage of the chemical interaction between light and a light-activated substance, leading to a series of chemical reactions resulting in damage and death of tumour cells. What does the treatment involve? The treatment consists of a nurse or consultant applying a cream and dressing to the skin lesion and 3 hours later, shining a pure red light on it. The light and cream targets
the lesion cells only leaving the healthy skin unharmed. Only where the two are combined will they treat the abnormal area of your skin. Following your first treatment, the treatment may be repeated approximately 1 week later, depending on the type of lesion. Usually the specialist will review at 3 months, and advise about any further treatment. PDT has been shown to be a highly effective treatment that does not harm healthy skin. What skin conditions are treated by PDT? • Pre-Cancerous Lesions Actinic Keratoses (AKs) is the term used for pre-cancerous lesions, which are the areas of skin that have been damaged by overexposure to sunlight, causing the skin to grow at an abnormally fast rate. AKs generally appear on the face, arms and hands and are usually reddish-brown in colour with a rough “warty” surface Bowen’s Disease is also a precancerous lesion appearing as slowly enlarging, reddish-pink
• Only abnormal cells are treated resulting in minimal or no scarring • It is an easy to perform, nonsurgical procedure, which offers convenience for both patient and specialist • Controlled treatment that only targets affected areas, leaving healthy skin cells intact Options for treating NMSCs aren’t always suitable for every patient. Your GP will need to refer you to one of our consultant dermatologists who will assess whether PDT is the right treatment for your condition. You can be referred for PDT if you are paying for yourself or if you have Private Medical Health Insurance but you will need to confirm with your private healthcare provider if you are covered. To find out more about this new service that is now available or to book an appointment with one of our dermatologists please contact us on 01902 275278. Bibi, who worked in beauty business management before joining Jon, is excited at the new business prospects. “The product range has been a phenomenal success so far and will be an excellent complement to the therapies the surgeons will be able to offer. “All our aftercare skin therapies will be based around Deborah’s range and of course, we have Jon’s implant skills to complete any smile reconstructions. “Combining our dental work with that of our consultant colleagues creates a powerful, facial aesthetics package for those who want to make the very best of their looks,” said Bibi. “Heaven was the obvious choice for us – the products are organic and have achieved global acclaim.

Perfect skin is key to an ageless beauty. It’s the secret weapon many of us long for as the years encroach and steal the glow of youth. Clearly our gene pools play a big part in how skin is preserved, but caring for the largest of our organs has now become a multi-million pound, international business. The beauty marketplace is inundated with products that help rejuvenate, deep cleanse, lift and provide that to-die-for glow. Sometimes, however, no matter how good the products, a little extra surgical help is required. “It’s a great project which will run completely separately to Total Implant Solutions. However, there’s a strong synthesis between aesthetic dentistry and what we plan to achieve with the new clinic,” adds Bibi.

Countdown to School Prom, Ladies Day and Summer Ball Beauty by Claire McCormack
Whether it is your school prom a day at the races or one of the fabulous summer balls that are held locally you must never leave your beauty appointments until the last minute. We recommend at least 1 month in advance to get a suitable appointment for your special occasion. We have many years of experience in preparing the lovely ladies of Wolverhampton and more recently the young ladies for their special Prom date. You will be in safe and professional hands so why not take advantage of one of the offers we have put together which are proven to suit the occasion. The Prep…. If you are daring to bare then you may need to opt for a St Tropez spray tan. At Skin and
78
Tonic we offer the most up to date choice in tanning shades, Express tan has just arrived and depending on what colour shade you want depends on how long you leave it on for. Short on time and just want a healthy glow? Shower after just one hour!! Leave for 2 hours for a more sun kissed glow or 3 hours for a deeper darker tan. No more having to sleep in your tan and leaving a tan mark on your bedding - Express tan is going to be huge!! Under no circumstances leave it to the last minute and apply an instant tan - if it doesn’t rain the chances are still high that after a glass or two of fizz you could be the victim of some spillage. Nothing spoils an outfit more than a set of streaky calves. We still have the Classic and Dark tan available which needs 6-8 hours to develop. £20 full body for all tan options. Nails… If your toes are on show make sure that they either match your hands or compliment your outfit. When choosing colours, stick with the theme of your outfit. If your outfit is ‘lady-like’ keep it classy with a nude Shellac or O.P.I Polish. If your outfit is ‘summery’ then opt for corals or pinks. If you are going for a real girlie look then it could be cute to accessorise your nails with some cute nail bows applied to your ring fingers. We actually sell these in the salon at just 10p each and have lots of other designs to choose from. Or you could even opt for one of our neon nail studs just in from Shellac, they are a lot of fun and guarantee you’ll be seen day or night! Makeup…. The first thing to bear in mind is that your makeup needs to last all day and stand up to the weather (rain, wind or shine). You also need to remember that it
may be a daytime event so keep it slightly more natural. We use Bare Minerals make up so you are guaranteed a flawless finish with the added bonus of SPF15/20. The True Romantics Collection has just arrived and can be applied for a day time look right into evening glamour by smoking the eyes and adding a flattering strip lash. Also remember that although a brighter lippy like a pink or red can add glamour to your daytime look, they are also high maintenance and will require regular touch ups to stay looking good. Therefore if you want to forget about your makeup once you’re there, it may be best to opt for a pinky nude gloss that you can re-apply on the go without needing a mirror! Finally, always remember to bring your Bare Minerals Mineral Veil Finishing Powder £22.00. Minimising lines, absorbing oils, and softening your complexion, it gives you a flawless finish that’s too good to miss. And best of all, it’s utterly weightless. Just a bare veil of minerals that locks makeup in place and gives your skin air brushed perfection! If you cannot attend the salon due to work commitments then we can advise on some perfect homecare products that will give you a great result. Just call in or email the salon and one of the highly experienced receptionists will put the perfect collection together. We offer a great discount on retail when 3 or more products are purchased at the same time.

International Beauty Brand No+Vello has Arrived in Wolverhampton Summer is fast approaching and the excitement of jetting off to sunnier climes is on all of our minds, but for many people holidays are not just about bathing on the beach or relaxing by the pool, they’re about looking good in the process! Everybody, whether male or female, wants to look their best when slipping into their swimwear, and the new No+Vello beauty centre in Wolverhampton aims to provide the answers. No+Vello is the world leader in providing flat rate IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) hair reduction treatments. From a single clinic in Spain in 2007, the company has grown to over 1,300 centres in 17 countries worldwide. Recently, No+Vello found its way to British shores and in February this year, franchisees Chris Bourne and Matthew Brown opened the Wolverhampton branch on King Street in the city centre. The clinic is run by Chris’s fiancée, Annabelle Simkins, who has worked in the beauty industry for five years; most recently for one of the UK’s largest ‘medi spa’ chains and she brings with her a wealth of experience in non invasive technological beauty treatments. In March, No+Vello Wolverhampton held its official launch event, which was attended by Wolverhampton West Magazine. The centre was opened by TV and radio presenter, and former Pop Idol runner-up Mark Rhodes, a friend of Chris and Matthew’s. The patented No+Vello IPL permanent hair reduction system is gentler on the skin & more versatile in treating a broader range of skin tones & hair colours than laser. The treatment is based on a state-ofthe-art technology, delivering rapid 80

pulses of high intensity light to the area that is being treated. The light energy is converted into heat, which destroys the hair follicle at the root, inhibiting future growth. Some of the advantages of IPL include: • The light beam is safer for a wider spectrum of skin tones & hair colours than some types of laser. • IPL permanent hair reduction is often more cost effective than laser treatments. • IPL is reported as less painful than laser treatments by many patients (no anaesthesia is required) • There is less risk of skin damage from an IPL treatment than laser. • IPL lends itself well to larger areas. In addition to IPL hair reduction, No+Vello offer a range of other treatments using LED (Light Emitting Diode) technology including teeth whitening,
cellulite reduction, facial and body firming and many more. What really sets No+Vello apart though is its simple and competitive pricing structure; every treatment is offered at a flat rate of £39 per area, per session. A minimum of six sessions is usually recommended for each area being treated and there are of course savings to be made when treatments are bought as courses. The new ‘No More Hair’ package even gives you the option of spreading the cost of hair reduction treatments with a monthly direct debit. For just £60 a month you buy an hour’s worth of treatment time, every month, within which multiple areas can be treated. Over a year, the whole body is treated, so you can throw away those razors, wave goodbye to those wax strips and say hello to a new hair free you! For more information on any of the treatments or treatment packages offered, don’t hesitate to call, email or just pop in. No+Vello is there to take care of you.

UltraSlim Clinics UltraSlim LipoFreeze™ Cryolipolysis is the newest body contouring procedure to be offered by UltraSlim Clinics in Wolverhampton to assist clients in achieving a slimmer physique and a smaller waistline. The clinic has seen bookings increase two-fold since recent media reviews from celebrities such as Luisa Zissman, Kristina Rihanoff and Casey Bathcelor who admit to having had the new Fat Freezing treatment with amazing results. The Non-Invasive UltraSlim LipoFreeze™ procedure eliminates fat without surgery in areas around the hips, thighs, arms, and love handles by freezing stubborn fat cells that live beneath the dermal layer of the skin. Developed in 2005 and backed by strong clinical research and trials, LipoFreeze (Fat Freezing) is based on Cryolipolysis - the use of precisely controlled cooling to remove fat. It is an FDA-approved non-invasive body contouring procedure available to patients with no scarring, no pain and no downtime. It provides permanent results and promises a reduction of the treated area by up to 40% in a single session. A patient will be able to see changes in about three weeks’ time, but dramatic improvement can be appreciated after two to three months. Hanna McCormac at UltraSlim Clinics in Wolverhampton encourages her clients to maintain a healthy lifestyle for optimum results. Hanna says, “I often tell my clients I can remove ‘love handles’, but it’s entirely up to you to maintain this through diet and lifestyle. I find the majority of my clients follow the good aftercare advice given as the results achieved often provide clients with the motivation needed to change their lifestyle in order to maintain these.” With their exclusive UltraSlim LipoFreeze™ device, UltraSlim Clinics now provide the same 84
quality treatments as London’s Harley Street Clinics only at a fraction of the cost. Hanna explains how. “Our exclusive UltraSlim LipoFreeze™ device uses 4 hand pieces, unlike most other clinics including the top clinics in London which only use 1 hand piece, therefore we are able to treat larger or 4 different areas simultaneously which means you receive more value for money in addition to reducing the need to return for more treatments. It’s because of this technology and capability that we can offer the most cost effective Cryolipolysis treatments in the Midlands. In addition, our clients can also benefit from having our UltraSlim Lipo™ Cavitation & Radio Frequency treatments at the very same time, which provides instant results to target other areas of unwanted excess fat.” Aside from Fat Freezing Treatments, the clinic in Berry Street, Wolverhampton also offers other anti-aging solutions through their wide range of non-invasive and skin care services including Ultrasound Cavitation and Radio Frequency (RF) treatments to target excess fat, cellulite, Stretch Marks and Tighten Loose Skin on body or face. The demand for these types of treatments has soared in
recent years because you don’t have the risks associated with traditional tummy tucks or facelifts as there is no surgery, no needles, no pain and no downtime. Clients can resume normal activities directly after treatments and the procedures have become known in the industry as ‘Lunchtime Lipo’. About UltraSlim Clinics: The Wolverhampton-based Aesthetics and Beauty Clinic is a specialist Non-Surgical Lipo and skin care services provider dedicated to helping women and men achieve their personal weight loss and aesthetic goals. The clinic is under the ownership of Hanna McCormac, who has earned extensive training and experience in the Non-Invasive Aesthetics industry. She is accredited by WhatClinic.com with a 5 STAR TREATMENT AWARD and prides herself on having some of the highest standards and reviews in the industry which can be found on the WhatClinic.com website or with simple Google search for ‘UltraSlim Clinics Reviews’ For more information, please visit www.ultraslimclinics.com or you can email info@ultraslimclinics. com Tel: 0844 288 7297

Fiat 500 - What Every Girl Needs by Helen Taylor
It had been exactly a week since our eyes met across a crowded showroom. Cute, charming and dressed in a fetching shade of red, my heart skipped a beat: I knew that I’d found exactly what I was looking for. Although not my usual type, I was completely besotted. Realising that it was definitely time for a change, I raced over to get up-close-and-personal with the car that was going to alter my perspective on motoring forever. I’d been toying with the idea of changing my car for a while, but nothing I’d seen had really interested me, and, besides, driving for me was less about the car and more about being able to get from A to
88
B. That was, of course, until I set on eyes on the Fiat 500 range. Stylish, retro-inspired and with a fashion-conscious image, each delightful little motor seemed to exude personality.
Evoking the sort of passion that I usually only feel when I’m buying a new pair of shoes or a designer handbag, I found myself unwilling to leave the showroom until I knew it would be mine. So, unsurprisingly, I signed the paperwork immediately.
Without hesitation I raced over to Sales Executive, Matthew Green, at Willenhall’s Guest Fiat dealership to find out more.
Now the day has arrived: the day I finally get behind the wheel of my newest accessory: the 85 bhp TwinAir Turbo.
Whilst sitting comfortably and sipping a cappuccino, he explained everything I needed to know, and so, it became clear that this was the perfect car for me.
But first things first: time to pair my mobile - Matthew helps with this, as well as providing a demonstration of all the vehicle’s controls and functions and informing me that I’m now entitled to top-notch aftercare as well. Consisting of free tyre-pressure checks, free car washes and even complimentary use of the tea and coffee-making facilities, the aftercare service is just a small but important part of the customer experience at
Available in a range of statement hues, with endless options for personalisation - both inside and out - a choice of three engines and a more than modest price tag, the 500 certainly sets itself apart from the competition.

Guest Fiat and is exactly why I’ll be recommending the dealership to all my style-savvy friends. In no time at all I’m on the road and on my way into the city to my favourite jeweller’s, T.A Henn, to treat myself to a little something from their Italian designer range, Nomination. Store manager, Carl, helps me choose a gorgeous bracelet that’s complete with a red charm - to match the car of course! After such a busy morning, and now that the retail therapy is complete, I’m in need of a substantial lunch. Where better than Apley Farm’s Creamery Café. Upon hearing news that I’m now driving in considerable style, my friend Sophie is keen to join me for the lunch and even keener to see how my new Fiat performs. To the accompaniment of the distinctive and characterful thrum of the two-cylinder 0.9 litre engine, we surprise many Saturday morning shoppers with the 500’s gutsy performance and arrive at Apley earlier than planned.
dish from the Café’s Specials Board, ‘Gammon and Eggs’. It’s obvious that each dish has been prepared using only the finest, freshest ingredients by a very talented team in the kitchen. Savouring each mouthful our conversation ceases, as we hungrily clear our plates. On leaving the restaurant, we head in the direction of the Farm Shop to stock up on some treats to take home. Driving away from the idyllic setting of Apley Farm, I decide that the final stop on my road trip will be Old Mill Antiques in Bridgnorth. We both love nothing more than a wander around the showroom - which is stocked full of unusual antiques and collectibles - and a visit to the Tea Room afterwards for a drink and cake. We leisurely browse the eclectic stock, before heading upstairs for
some afternoon refreshments. A pot of tea and a slice of homemade Victoria Sponge is sufficient and we decide it’s time to head home. On the way back beautiful sunshine turns to dismal rain but it’ll take a lot more than this to dampen my spirits, because this little Fiat 500 has really stolen my heart. I’m so taken with it in fact; that already I’m thinking its showroom-fresh shine and finish could do with some TLC after the sudden downpour. So, it’s time to take this journey full circle and head back to Guest to make full use of those free car wash vouchers.
To book your test drive call Guest Motors on 01902 544200 or visit their showroom at Armstrong Way, Willenhall, WV13 2QU
Soaking up the lovely surroundings, we get comfortable in the Creamery Café, and take a look at the menu. Packed with a mouth-watering selection of tempting light bites and lunches, I ponder before selecting: ‘Breaded Goat’s Cheese’ - served on a bed of roasted vegetable cous cous, with wild garlic pesto. Carl Takes Principal’s Role as ‘Dental Experience’ Trend Grows Strident advances in science, medicine and technology are raising the bar of dentistry daily. The ultimate fusion of enlightened medical disciplines and modern materials and therapies has now opened up a huge palette of options in every-day dental practice. With an ever-increasing awareness of possibilities, many patients have come to expect much more than run-of-themill check-ups, fillings and an appointment with the hygienist. The emergence of boutique practices, dental social media postings and regular advertising campaign challenges to embrace a “new kind of dental experience” has seen a radical modernisation of the profession. It is now a recognised fact that creative thinking in dentistry must not only remain on the
very cusp of medical evolution, but equally, must also forge meaningful relationships with patients and community. And as part of its on-going commitment to update the patient experience and everexpand its team’s skills set, Parkside Dental Practice has appointed a new principal. Before accepting the post, pioneering research by Carl Horton BDs MSc Periodontology (GDC 71768) saw him take international conference platforms at San Francisco, Gothenburg and Athens, sharing his knowledge of periodontology – the study of the supporting structures of teeth and how to treat the diseases that can affect them. A dental implant surgeon with the Jon Pugh Dental marque, Carl will spend the majority of his time at the Park Road West practice, but will continue his work at Total Implant Solutions in Tettenhall Road, Wolverhampton.

“Parkside has some excellent dentists, a reputation second to none for its orthodontic work and a great ethos for patient care,” says Carl. “Joining the team is an exciting opportunity to engage more with families in the community and be relevant in what we do and communicate for seniors, families, young adults, teenagers and children.” One of his aims is to grow the reputation of the team’s orthodontic work. “I can think of non better to undertake this specialism and I aim to push opportunities in this field with NHS referrals and as a private practice.” Traditionally a therapy for children with misaligned teeth, more imageconscious adults are currently taking advantage of ‘invisible’ braces to enhance their looks. “I believe that dental care is not just about the clinical excellence we deliver, it’s about embracing patients as individuals and adopting an holistic approach to their care. “For the time they share with us I will endeavor to change their preconceptions of dentistry forever,” he adds. A graduate of Birmingham University, Carl qualified with a Clinical Distinction in 1996. He has worked as a General Practice associate, a part-time senior house officer in a hospital and as a clinical lecturer at Birmingham Dental School. In 2003 he became a practice principal and while continuing to teach undergraduates, also took the role of Foundation Dental Trainer for three successive years.

The Denture Revolution: Breaking the Taboo Then there was the consummate actress – a lady in her 70s who, for the majority of her life, made excuses not to socially engage, terrified her teeth would fall out. She was able to stop living a lie. “We had a health professional, an enthusiastic singer, who quite literally found a new song in her life,” says Steven. And not least there was the remarkable case of a patient who had been tormented by crippling trigeminal nerve pain for years. “She is now totally free from pain,” he adds.
The easy-access main entrance and drop off point right next to the off-road car park
By any measure, it’s a big statement, but his practice is well placed to make such claims with some 3,000 patients on the books and an ever-growing portfolio of happy clinical outcomes. The clinic’s prosthetics, prescribed and crafted on premises in North Street, Dudley and Tettenhall Road, Wolverhampton, have found satisfied patients from as far away as Spain and Portugal. Others wishing to resolve longterm denture issues have travelled from Dorset, the Isle of Anglesey, the Isle of Skye and London. Steven Burchell DipCDT RCS(Eng) was one of the first denturists to register in the UK after studying at Canada’s George Brown College and with the Royal College of Surgeons. Steven Burchell DipCDT RCS(Eng) with fellow clinician Peter Brookes
“We don’t just prescribe dentures, we transform looks, recover lost smiles and often play a part in transforming lives,” says the principal of the Denture Clinic. 94
With more than 30 years’ experience, the Denture Clinic has encountered some heartrending accounts of how ill-fitting teeth have dislocated lives. There was the case of a mother who travelled to the Caribbean for her son’s dream wedding. Ashamed of her teeth, she didn’t have the confidence to be part of the album shoot. She’s due to make a return trip to Runaway Bay and in her words: “Guess who won’t be frightened to have their picture taken?”
“There are so many cases where our clinical intervention has had a hugely beneficial lifestyle impact. There was a larger-than-life couple – the husband had not a single tooth in his head – that came for help. We were able to craft some high-quality dentures and within days he was putting on weight and eating peanuts,” he recalls. Recently, the Denture Clinic in North Street, Dudley, has undergone a £.5m rebuild to include new surgeries, waiting area and installations for disabled. An off-road car park provides secure, level access – there’s not a single step to negotiate. Facilities for the disabled include toilet, reserved parking bays and a drop-off point. A dentist is on site, all prosthetics are prescribed and manufactured on the premises and everything from denture cleaning to implantretained therapies are available. “We have a one-stop service – no referring out – cutting-edge technology, friendly team and I’d like to introduce new patients to our experience. We’re all about aiming for outcomes greater than expectations. “We’re forever pushing boundaries and changing perceptions. Could dentures ever be glamorous? Emphatically, yes,” adds Steven. The Denture Clinic can also be found at Wolverhampton, Kidderminster and Bearwood. All consultations are complementary.

Turn Back the Clock for Younger-Looking Hair By Helen Taylor You’re probably all too aware of the need to look after your skin to stay looking youthful for longer, but have you ever thought that you might need to be doing something to age-proof your hair? Hair, like skin, is affected by two types of ageing: extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic is everything that your locks are exposed to on the outside, like heat styling, sun damage and colouring. Intrinsic factors come from below the scalp and show signs that your hair is past its prime, these include: reduction in melanin, decline in sebum production and a change in hair diameter. For you that means, greys start to appear, shine starts to disappear and your once full, bouncy hair is no more. But don’t despair because there’s plenty you can do to help, read on:
Always Be Aware of Your Hair Try to limit the extrinsic damage caused to your locks as much as possible. Lay off the heated styling tools, stay out of the sun and treat your hair with care.
Photograph Courtesy of Paul Mitchell Hair
Reconsider Your Colour Although you might colour your hair to hide greys, choosing the wrong hue can be very ageing. An all over colour can be hard to wear as you get older, so instead, choose a base colour that’s close to your natural hue and add a multitude of highlights. Not only will your hair look younger, your face will too.
Condition, Condition, Condition Smother the lengths and ends of your hair with a rich deep conditioning treatment once or twice a week.
Try a New Hairstyle Get your current hairstyle reappraised by your stylist, or better still try out a new salon. Any hairdresser worth their salt will be able to advise on what styles work best for thinning or ageing hair, but generally it’s worth considering saying goodbye to long, thin lengths and hello to a blunt midi cut. Try to include a blunt fringe or soft layers into your new style for a younger look.
A Professional Opinion is Best Although it’s normal for your hair to show signs of change over the years - like thinning - it’s worth seeing your GP if you notice any sudden changes. Hair loss can be caused by hormone deficiencies - like low thyroid levels - nutrient deficiencies, stress and medications, so if you’re in doubt visit your doctor for advice.

Contesting a Will not just an LA Story
It is perhaps not surprising that as tributes to Hollywood legend Mickey Rooney began so did the row over his estate. The 93-year-old had apparently made a will just days before he died, leaving his estranged wife and stepson nothing of his $18,000 estate. Within a week, an older copy of his will was discovered by the pair, which they say does not disinherit them completely.
FBC Manby Bowdler was one of the first firms in the Midlands to set up a dedicated disputed probate team to advise on claims against wills and estates. In the last two years, the caseload has increased dramatically coming from both members of the public and from other law firms.
This particularly high profile case may involve an eight-time wed LA actor, but the issues faced by his family and the courts are the same as we see here in Wolverhampton and the wider West Midlands as wills are contested and estates the subject of fierce debate.
Partner Margaret Rowe, who works from both the Telford and Wolverhampton offices of the firm, said: “The dispute over Mickey Rooney’s estate didn’t just focus on his estate, but also his wishes regarding burial and cremation and even who had the right to attend his funeral. “The effect of the high profile coverage is that it has raised awareness about the validity of wills, how estates can be contested and inheritance disputed. “The issues are complex, which is why we’ve also seen an increase in referrals from law firms without an in-house specialist disputed probate team, and also from other professionals involved in dealing with families and estates. “Increasingly, we are seeing cases involving remarriages, second and third families, and with children and step-children involved, the complexities surrounding disputed probate can multiply exponentially.
98
“A will can be challenged by spouses, former spouses, children and those with significant relationships if they believe there has been a failure to make reasonable provision for them under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975. There are four main grounds for challenging a will. A will can be invalidated if it is not drawn up and executed properly; if the person making the will does not have the mental capacity or understand what they are doing; if there has been undue influence on the person making will, or if the will has been created or changed fraudulently.” At least the issue of where the fourtime Oscar nominee was going to be buried was solved reasonably quickly, within a week, with his wife agreeing to drop a legal claim to her husband’s remains. But the complex probate case was due to open in May, and could last some time.

How Important Are Regular Check-Ups? by Richa Sharma
Ouch? “Where is that pain coming from?” I said, as I gripped the right side of my jaw! Does this sound painfully familiar? Dental problems are something we all face at some point in our lives regardless of how well we think we are looking after ourselves. Okay, I have a bit of a confession to make; it has been a while since I’ve visited the dentist. As soon I reached the age of 18 and there were no longer regular check-ups coming through the post to remind me to visit my dentist, I sort of pushed aside the need to go. I was dreading to make my first trip to the dentist after so many years and thinking about how many treatments I would have to have and the damage it would do to my bank account. Enough! I had to face my fears and worries as the pain was too unbearable to just ignore it. I called my dentist and managed to get an appointment for the next day. As I sat in the chair feeling ridiculous with the enormous sunglasses on 100
and a bright light shining on my face, I couldn’t help but feel anxious and slightly ashamed over what the dentist was going to find. Suddenly, I heard my dentist call my name and felt him staring at me with a weird expression on his face. I realised my day dreaming expression freaked him out. Oops! He kept staring at me for a few seconds and before I could speak he said “calm down”. You are not experiencing any major dental problems. It’s just a small cavity which can be filled and it’s completely painless. At the end of my treatment he did however sit me down and explain the importance of regular checkups. He said, even though I may not realise it, regular cleaning visits to the dentist is the best way to keep your teeth healthy, and prevent problems such as decay and cavities. He also went on to say that most people like myself put off going to the dentist until there is pain and although this time I was lucky, in some cases it can sometimes be too late and will already require expensive procedures or even worse the tooth may need to be extracted.
replied with a simple nod. That’s when he introduced me to the idea of getting a cashplan. A cashplan enables you to get cash back on everyday healthcare for a small premium per month so you don’t have to worry about the costs when attending check-ups or having any treatments done. I was amazed by the concept of such a simple plan and how effective it would be to have one to manage my finances. As I was leaving he handed me a leaflet which explained more about a healthcare cashplan and sent me on my way. As I drove back home I couldn’t help but smile with relief that my first visit went so smoothly and at how helpful the dentist was when it came to managing the cost of my treatments. If you would like to find out more about healthcare cash plans and what Paycare can offer you please visit www.paycare.org or call 01902 252265
He then went on and asked me if I had to pay for my treatments; I wolverhampton west magazine | june/july 2014

Double Celebration in Local Opticians’ 20th Year
Dianne Boardman (Optical Dispenser), Siobhan Bruce and Olha Lac (Partner/Optmetrist)
Taylor Biddle Opticians, which has practices in Compton and Wombourne, is celebrating 20 years in business this June. To mark the occasion, they will be raising money for two fantastic causes. The practices will be supporting the Motor Neurone Disease Association, a charity that is close to the hearts of the staff. The other chosen organisation is the Neonatal Baby Unit at New Cross Hospital, who provided wonderful care to Optometrist Olha Lac’s son when he was born at 23 weeks. One pound from every OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) scan taken between 1st June 2014 and 30th November 2014 will be donated by the practices. OCT is a revolutionary piece of diagnostic equipment that can detect a number of key eye conditions, such as glaucoma, age related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy during a routine eye examination. Taylor Biddle Opticians are also thanking patients for their support with a free anniversary prize draw and will be giving away 20 brilliant gifts from eye care suppliers and local businesses. During the anniversary week, each practice will be giving away two prizes per day. Winning patients will be presented with their prizes on Monday 16th June 2014 at the Compton practice during an anniversary party. Both practices’ Eyeplan members will also have the opportunity to enter an exclusive Eyeplan prize draw, with the winner announced on the 16th June 2014. In addition to its 20th birthday, Taylor Biddle Opticians welcomed its 15000th new patient to 102
their Compton practice in April. 26 year old Siobhan Bruce from Wolverhampton was given a free Sight Test and a complimentary pair of prescription Wimbledon sunglasses to commemorate this milestone in the practice’s history. She was also presented with a certificate and custom birthday cake, complete with Taylor Biddle Opticians’ logo, which was made especially for the occasion by Shuga Budz cake shop and cafe in Compton. “It was a lovely surprise to receive the letter from Taylor Biddle Opticians telling me I was Compton practice’s 15000th new patient,” said Siobhan Bruce. “It’s good to use local independent trusted companies, such as Taylor Biddle Opticians. This way we invest in the local community.” “As a local independent business, we are incredibly proud to be going strong after 20 years and during that time our Compton branch have welcomed 15000 new patients; we were delighted that Siobhan could celebrate with us,” said Tracey Taylor, Partner and Optometrist at Taylor Biddle Opticians. “Since opening the business, we have strived to offer our patients the very best eye care and continue to invest in the latest eye care advancements and technology. The anniversary prize draw is our way of saying thank you to our wonderful patients who have shown us loyalty and support since we opened in June 1994. We’re very pleased to be raising money for two worthy charities at the same time.” wolverhampton west magazine | june/july 2014

Total Peace of Mind with Later Life Protection At Later Life Protection we offer many products, one of which is Funeral Plans.
but how long does it take to sell a house and how long before those funds become available?
Several Funeral Plan options are available along with a range of payment methods.
They are becoming more prevalent as clients look to take care of important matters as they grow older. Taking out a funeral plan should be seen as making sensible provision for the day that none of us ever wants to arrive. Many people put off making these decisions due to cost, but by not taking out a funeral plan through Later Life Protection it could cost you and your family even more over the long term.
Even if you did use the proceeds from the estate, you would pay approximately £10000 in 20 years time, instead of paying today’s average price of £3456*.
*Sun Life Direct Cost of Dying Survey 2013
Did you know that:
With a funeral plan from Later Life Protection you can:
• Funeral prices have risen by 80% since 2004 when the average funeral cost was £1920* • In 9 years time (2023) they are forecast to cost approximately £5800*
**The Plan B option with one of our Funeral Plan providers
It’s not about being able to afford the cost when you die, it’s more a question of why pay £10000 when you can pay £3665?** You can also take out a plan on behalf of others; will the burden of cost fall upon you at their death?
• Freeze the cost of the funeral at today’s prices • Reduce the future expense for your family • Leave your loved ones fewer decisions to make
• By 2033 they are expected to cost approximately £9700* Most people think that their estate can be used to pay for their funeral,
• Ensure your wishes are carried out • Have total peace of mind

Tom’s Top Tip of the Month: Excessive Pronation
Why do my feet flatten when I stand up? One of the most common causes of foot and leg discomfort is a condition known as excessive/over pronation. Normal pronation, or “rolling inward” of the foot is necessary as the foot adapts to the ground. With excessive pronation/over pronation, the arch flattens or collapses and soft tissues stretch. This causes the joint surfaces to function at unnatural angles to each other. When this happens, joints that should be stable now become very loose and flexible which can cause pain and even long term arthritis. This scenario occurs frequently since we now walk on flat hard surfaces every day. At first, excessive pronation may cause fatigue. As the problem gets worse, strain on the muscles, tendons and ligaments of the foot and lower leg can cause permanent problems and deformities. The appearance of excessive pronation can be seen when standing, your heels lean inward and one or both knee caps turn inward. This is known as mal-alignment of the skeleton. You will also abnormally wear out the soles and heels of your shoes very quickly.
Symptoms of Excessive Pronation Symptoms can come about in many different ways. The associated conditions depend on the individual lifestyle of each patient. Here is a list of some of the conditions associated with Excessive Pronation
WOLVERHAMPTON HIP
(rolling in of the foot too much): 1. Hallux Abducto Valgus (Bunions) , 2. Hallus Limitus/ Rigidus (stiff big toe) 3. Arch Pain 4. Heel Pain (Plantar Faciitis) 5. Metatarsalgia (ball of the foot pain) 6. Ankle sprains 7. Shin Splints 8. Achilles Tendonitis 9. Osteochondrosis 10. Knee Pain 11. Corns & Calluses 12. Flat Feet (Pes Planus) 13. Hammer Toes 14. Lower back pain
Treatment Overpronation occurs due to biomechanical dysfunction (walking abnormally). This can be controlled via insoles/orthotics which adjust your foot posture accordingly. See a Chiropodist/Podiatrist for an assessment if you are concerned. They can provide specialised insoles/orthotics for your associated condition and is usually combined with some stretch exercises or manipulative therapy.

Education and Schooling by David Williams
In our era of educational “choice” where do you receive the best education in the world? In a country where it was recently announced that, as part of a taxpayer-funded programme, teachers from China will be sent into English schools to raise education standards, the UK government clearly feel that the answer lies beyond our shores. Indeed international league tables published late last year suggested that our 15-year-olds were the equivalent of up to three years behind those in various countries in the Far East. This move reinforces the findings of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) a test where the emphasis is not on memorising material but in assessing a pupil’s effectiveness at problem-solving and a measurement of the teaching of creativity and critical thinking. The test has been sat by millions of teenagers in more than 40 countries and the results reveal that pupils in Finland, Korea, Japan and Canada consistently score much higher than their peers in Germany, Britain, America and France. In a recent book “The smartest kids in the world” the author Amanda Ripley aims to find out the keys to success by focusing on three of the world’s highest performing countries: Finland, Poland and South Korea. Three American teenagers who spent a 108
year as foreign-exchange students in each country were startled by how hard their new peers work and how seriously they take their studies and how the level of expectations is significantly higher. For example, maths classes tend to be more sophisticated, with lessons that show the often fascinating ways that geometry, trigonometry and calculus work together in the real world. Pupils forego calculators, having learned how to manipulate numbers in their heads. Furthermore, after every test the teachers publicly announced how each pupil had performed. Classrooms were understated, free of the high-tech gadgetry of their schools back home and teachers in every subject exhibit the authority of professionals held in high regard. A clear sense of purpose helps. When teachers demand rigorous work, unsurprisingly, pupils often rise to the occasion. The success of each country is also traced to certain factors. Poland’s turnaround was due to a former minister of education who in 1997 decided to keep all Polish children in the same schools until they were 16, delaying the moment when some would have entered vocational education (an interesting counter to those demanding a wholesale return to the days of Grammar Schools in the UK). Poland’s swift rise in PISA rankings is largely the result of the high scores of these supposedly non-academic children who under the new system were expected to achieve. In Finland teachers come from the top of their university classes and work extremely hard to get accepted into teachertraining schools, and teachers are highly respected and well-paid ensuring a highly trained and dedicated educational workforce. So far so good but when Eric, an American boy, travelled to South Korea the country with one of the highest school-graduation rates in the world he did not find such a stimulating and motivating
environment but instead found pupils asleep in class. Ripley calls this a culture of “educational masochism” where pupils study at all hours in the hope of securing a precious spot in one of the country’s three prestigious universities. The pupils were recovering from their evening tutoring academies called “hagwons” where many went after a full day’s school until 10 or 11 at night. This maybe serves to explain a recent trend where many pupils, especially from the Far East are seeking to “escape” their so-called high performing educational systems and travel to UK independent schools for their education a fact borne out by recent statistics revealing that the number of non-British pupils attending such schools was up 1.4% in 2013 in addition to 29 overseas “branches” of UK independent schools now educating 19 000 pupils abroad. Having myself recently been on two trips to China and Vietnam, I can confirm a strong desire for the independent schools of this country (including Tettenhall College!), the academic standards, the smaller class sizes but also the care they receive and the holistic approach to education where pupils can feel happier and more relaxed thereby improving their performance. This also serves as a warning to those seeking out schools purely on the basis of their results which may hide a harsher, unforgiving regime that may not actually be suited to their child. Of course, the challenge I underlined in an assembly to my own UK pupils is the competition they will have in the future in the global market place with those who are nowadays prepared to take themselves out of their own country, experience another culture and study GCSEs, A-levels and probably a degree in a language other than their own but that is another question in itself!

English:
3) Sentence structures. Examiners need to see a mixture of complex, compound and simple sentences to reward the very best marks. Using complex sentences, in particular, are absolutely crucial for the A/B grade area.
What exactly are the examiners looking for from your child?
I hope this helps and that your child achieves the grades that they deserve this summer! Mr Laurence Dalton – Private English Teacher
Experience: Head of English, Head of GCSE’s GCSE exam marker, classified as ‘Outstanding’ according to Ofsted requirements.
Having worked as an examiner, a Head of English and Head of GCSE’s at various schools, I am acutely aware of the need for the student to help the examiner to reward marks.
There are three areas that your child needs to be aware of to ensure that success is achieved this year in examinations: 1) Vocabulary. They need to ensure that they have at least 20 standard impressive words up their sleeve that they can use in most contexts. English is about what you say and how you say it so do not underestimate the importance of vocabulary. 2) Techniques are crucial. I often say to my students that writing a speech without a mixture of persuasive techniques (repetition, personal pronouns, rhetorical questions and triples) is like eating a pizza with no pizza base!

Unique Coffee Business Venture by Students The annual expedition to Uganda makes the trip of a lifetime for many Wolverhampton Grammar School students. However, for a number of 6th Form students, supporting the projects that they had become involved with during their three week stay became the start of an exciting business venture. It was in Bwikasa, a village in eastern Uganda where they had helped with teaching classes and constructing a building for the local Primary School, that the group discovered the excellent local coffee grown by the smallholders of the village. Some of the local raw coffee beans were brought back to Wolverhampton and processed by WGS parent, Carrie Bate of recent Dragon’s Den fame, and founder of The Little Coffee Bag Co.
connoisseurs will appreciate the 100% organically grown Arabica beans, which provide a barista style coffee with the convenience of a bag. The bags are sold in packs of 5, 10 or 25 and are currently available from the school. Future plans include selling through the godfreyscofffee.co.uk website with the option to buy ground coffee and whole beans of the same excellent quality as well as promotions at local coffee shops and restaurants. All profits from the company will be returned to the Ugandan community. For more information please email godfreyscoffee@wgs-sch.net
Here began the seed of an idea and the students formed their own coffee company, with the support and guidance of staff and Carrie. “Godfrey’s Coffee” took its name from the village elder, and former Head Teacher of Lord’s Meade College in Jinja, Godfrey Kiganga, who looked after the groups during their stay in Bwikasa and introduced them to the local coffee. Coffee beans are now imported from the area, processed here in the UK and sold by Godfrey’s Coffee in the revolutionary coffee bag. Coffee

Fun for all the Family at Kinver Country Fayre Sunday 15th June Kinver Country Fayre is set to offer plenty of entertainment on Father’s Day, Sunday 15 June. The Fayre, a highlight of the village calendar, has grown in recent years to attract over 10,000 visitors. Not only does the event provide fun for all the family, but it raises funds to help local charities and good causes, having donated £10,000 in grants last year. For 2014 the theme of “This Island Race” is bringing in traditional entertainment from around the British Isles – including Scottish dancing, English folk dance and Irish music with Dempsey’s Lot playing on the fields. The theme will carry into the children’s fancy dress competition, art show and into the beer tent, where ales from the isles will be on sale. The star arena attraction is The Vikings of Middle England, the leading UK re-enactment group. Their realistic and exciting battles will entertain the crowds, while their Viking village incorporates craft displays, Icelandic horses and have-a-go archery. The arena programme also features falconry displays, the Wye Valley Axemen (back from 2013 by popular demand),
114
DRUAC dog agility and that canine extravaganza, the Kinver Country Fayre fun dog show. Another exciting new aspect of this year’s event is support and sponsorship from Taste of Staffordshire. Celebrating its 13th year, Taste of Staffordshire is helping to raise the awareness and profile of Staffordshire’s culinary delights from local producers and farm shops to fine dining restaurants and food festivals throughout the county. In partnership with Taste of Staffordshire, it is intended that the Fayre provides an opportunity to showcase great local food and drink. With an array of children’s entertainment, shire horses, farm animals, steam engines, classic cars, dozens of stalls and tempting food outlets catering for all tastes, there really will be something for everyone at this year’s Fayre. Kinver Country Fayre would like to acknowledge and thank the Marsh family for kindly allowing them the use of their land to hold the Annual Fayre.

Each spring the Rotary Club of Wolverhampton holds an evening meeting at which the wives and partners of present and past members of the club are invited. This year’s meeting took place on Tuesday 1st April at Linden House, Tettenhall Road. Over 100 guests including the Mayor of Wolverhampton, Councillor Milkinder Jaspal, enjoyed an excellent meal with great company. The guest speaker was Sheila Dibnah, wife of the late and very popular well known character Fred Dibnah MBE. Sheila, along with her ‘golden spanner’ entertained everyone with stories of ‘Life with Steeplejack Fred’ - certainly, there was never a dull moment! 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. 14.

Oxley Park Golf Club: A Hidden Gem Oxley Park Golf Club is situated on the outskirts to the north of Wolverhampton, close to the border of Staffordshire. Having just celebrated its centenary, it is best described as an eighteen hole undulating parkland course designed by the famous course architect, Harry Shapland Colt. The holes are varied and testing with over eighty bunkers to punish a wayward shot. Many fairways are tree lined so there is a premium on straight hitting. The club is also an ideal venue for conferences, parties and weddings. It has a well-stocked Pro shop with many offers in place including free coaching for juniors. The course is played in two loops. The first loop finishing at the eighth, a par four of 443 yards. With out of bounds down the right and a pool at driving distance, it definitely earns its rating of stroke index 1.The second loop finishes
at the eighteenth, another par four of 417 yards, a very testing finish and stroke index 2. So, avoid the
trees, ponds and out of bounds and enjoy some of the best greens the area has to offer.
Visitors and societies are made more than welcome with discounted green fees and packages available. Just visit our website www.oxleyparkgolfclub.co.uk to view the latest offers.

Yes, there’s sometimes a lot of fresh air whistling between the ears of those who take the game too seriously, but there’s always a solution, as golf legend Arnold Palmer puts it: ‘I have a tip that can take five strokes of anyone’s game, it’s called an eraser.’ Keep it light-hearted and the rewards are legion. With summer around the corner now’s the time to pick up a club and start swinging. With an accent firmly on newbies - as well as lapsed, former players - getting in on the act, the aim of the initiative is to promote the virtues of the game with great value teaser offers from clubs across the UK. Sensible shoes are a must for starting out though, to be quickly followed by golf shoes, with spikes for improved traction. Dress codes will of course become an issue at some point, with many clubs preferring you to keep to code, although generally it is a lot more relaxed than many people imagine. There’s certainly no prerequisite for chequered trousers tucked into long socks and wooden clubs. So to you and all of your friends: get in to the swing of it this May; play golf for a day.

It’s Not Just a Man’s Game
It’s no surprise that ladies are realising they may be missing out on the ever popular sport of golf. As a great opportunity to meet new friends, learn a new sport and keep fit, more and more female golfers are joining in to what is traditionally known as a male only sport. At 3 Hammers Golf Complex, Wolverhampton the number of ladies taking up the sport is increasing year on year. Indeed, almost half of all students enrolling on their Learn 2 Play golf classes are female. Ladies are also invited to join the weekly ladies morning where,
after a coffee and a fun quiz in the bistro, they head out for some tuition. PGA professional John Cheetham offers encouragement, advice and tips for ladies to learn and improve their game. The ladies morning runs from 10am until 12noon and costs £7.50, plus there is a session aimed at women who work held on Wednesday evenings from 7.30pm to 8.30pm. John says: “We have a friendly, no membership culture here at the 3 Hammers which suits our female golfers. Supervised practice takes place on our driving range on topics such as golf swing or how to hit the driver.”
“We also head out onto the 18 hole course to focus on short game, chipping, putting and bunker play.” John and the Academy team recognise that barriers to women participating in the game are being broken down, thanks to changing club policies and their need to cater for a wider market. The attraction for lady golfers being that the 3 Hammers programme is affordable at only £20 for a 4 week course and that the 3 Hammers is open to everyone. Their Learn 2 Play group programme recently had its success recognised on a national scale having been invited to speak at the Annual PGA Conference held in Birmingham. The Professional Golfers Association and England Golf chose the 3 Hammers Golf Academy as the best example of good practice for teaching new learner golfers. Over 350 adults learnt the sport with them last year alone. Learn 2 Play is both the first Tuesday and the first Thursday of every month from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. The cost is £20 for four weeks and tuition is offered to groups of no more than 12. Those who sign up get given a club to use throughout the programme which they can take away for practice. 3 Hammers Golf Complex, Old Stafford Road, near Coven, Wolverhampton WV10 7PP. Awkward Lies This month we are going to look at awkward lies and how to set up to play them.
UPHILL LIE
DOWNHILL LIE
With an uphill lie the ball will launch at a higher angle so it’s normal to take one more club than you would normally for the distance.
With a downhill lie the ball will launch at a lower angle so it’s normal to take one less club than you would normally for the distance.
Place the ball more toward to higher foot so that you do not hit the ground first. (1)
Place the ball more towards the higher foot so that you do not ‘thin’ the ball. (2)
Try to get your shoulders parallel to the ground so that you swing the club along the lie of the land.
Try to get your shoulders parallel to the ground so that you swing the club along the lie of the land.
You will feel as if most of your weight is on the lower foot. Because it is difficult to turn your hips during the swing there is a tendency for the hands to take over which will mean a right to left movement in the air so it is sometimes beneficial to aim a little to the right of the target.

Stop Your Money Vanishing Into Thin Air Over time, air-con gas gradually depletes causing the engine to work harder which will result in using more fuel. That’s the message from HiQ Wolverhampton’s owner, Simon Bennett, as he advises motorists to get their air-con systems regularly checked to avoid paying out elsewhere. An estimated ten per cent of air-con gas depletes from the system every year causing it to become less effective which will increase fuel consumption. Though most manufacturers suggest replacing the gas and lubricant every two years, Simon insists that a yearly check will see motorists saving money at the pump. He said: “Fuel prices are at an all-time high and while motorists are looking for ways in which to save, we recognise many aren’t aware that having air-con systems checked is one of them. “As a rule, air-con systems are not checked during an average service so we advise motorists have regular check-ups and keep the air-con in frequent use throughout the year to keep the components lubricated. Simon added: “It is around this time of year when we always see an increase in problems,
often because motorists haven’t used their air-con systems for at least six months. “Like anything car related a poor performing system or accessory will lead to problems, which many motorists don’t appreciate.” HiQ advises that air-con systems need to be serviced every two years for optimum performance with a recharge gas top up service once per annum. HiQ Wolverhampton are offering a top up service for just £45 to keep air-con functioning to maximum efficiency. The system operating pressure will also be checked and gas and lubricant are added to the correct level.

Skoda Rapid
There was a time not so long ago when car designers could draw the most fanciful creations on a piece of paper, then sit back smugly and say it was the next big thing from their brand. Whether it ever became a reality depended on the people working down the corridor, in the departments marked Engineering and Manufacturing. The industry has moved forward dramatically since then, and today’s advanced construction techniques mean metal can be pressed into the most stylish shapes imaginable. Take the Skoda Rapid, for example. From the multiple bonnet creases and sculpted doors to the crease that runs right along the car’s waistline, everything about it says precision. According to the company, the look is inspired by traditional glass crystal production in its home market of the Czech Republic. So now you know! The Rapid hatchback was the first car to feature Skoda’s latest design language, styling cues which have since appeared on its sibling, the Rapid Spaceback, as well as the Octavia, Superb and Yeti. Everything in car making is transferrable, so not surprisingly, much of what’s excellent about those other Skoda models appears on the Rapid. First of all it’s the generous interior space, with enough knee and head room in every seat to make the Rapid appealing to families. There’s a large boot too, measuring 550 litres with the rear seats in place and 1,490 litres when they are dropped down. 136
Second is the comfort and versatility of that cabin, so features like a driver’s seat arm rest, a folding 60:40 split rear seat with ski-hatch and a rear arm rest with integrated double cup-holder are all available on the Rapid. In keeping with the exterior style, it’s a very precise interior with clean lines, premium materials and rock-solid build quality. Part of the appeal of today’s Skoda cars is the smart design ideas which help with everyday motoring practicality. The company calls them ‘Simply Clever’ solutions and has cunningly built an entire marketing campaign around them. The Rapid is no exception, so comes with an ice scraper stored behind the fuel filler cap. Why isn’t that on every new car? Other features available include a reversible boot floor to deal with dirty loads, bag-holding hooks in the boot and a handy storage compartment under the driver’s seat. Rapid buyers also get an impressive suite of electronic safety systems, all of which are designed to keep them on the straight and narrow should the worst happen. Every Skoda car comes with a range of proven petrol and diesel engines, and the Rapid is no exception. It’s also available as a GreenLine model, which reflects the company’s commitment to providing motorists with the lowest possible CO2 emissions. That’s vital to company car drivers because it affects their tax payments. Thanks to features like engine stop-start and regenerative braking, the Rapid GreenLine – powered by a 1.6-litre 90PS diesel – puts out just 99g/km. The ability of car companies to make a significant contribution to the environment is another thing that’s come a long way in recent years. wolverhampton west magazine | june/july 2014

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon by Syd Taylor I caught my neighbour peering over the picket fence with an inquisitive look on his face. Following his gaze, my eyes alighted on the gleaming Jeep Wrangler that graced my driveway.
such a legendary manufacturer” I replied. “And at £29,570 it’s more than a corner shop scratch card - but that’s not surprising. Frankly, in an ever changing world I have a penchant for the traditional - and you can’t get more traditional than Jeep - a manufacturers label that resonates most evocatively even in these postmodern times.”
“Howdy Neighbour” I said cheerily. “How’s it goin’?”
I could tell that I had lost him with that last remark. To make amends I offered to give him a run in the passenger seat to prove that the Wrangler Rubicon can ride the rugged trail with the best of them whilst at the same time ooze the charisma of the trailblazing hero.
He blinked, cleared his throat and in a tentative voice asked the question “That’s a Jeep isn’t it?” I looked at him; I looked at the Jeep once more just to confirm the fact and then said “Sure is, my fine buckaroo.” He remained pensively stroking his chin. “A Jeep eh?” He said. “They don’t come cheap. If I’d picked up the right scratch card I’d ‘ave one of them.” His interest awakened my charitable impulses and I invited him over to have a look at the car. The Jeep in question was a Rubicon version of the Wrangler 2 door - available on the ‘special order’ programme. Wranglers come as 2 door or 4 door - and this was an even tougher version of the toughest Jeep model. The Wrangler is built on a hugely substantial chassis, has solid front and rear axles and locking diffs. and has a body on it that makes it look similar to the ones those GIs drove way back in WW2 - but it’s almost twice the size.
I started up and messages of untapped reserves of power suggested a stimulating overture to a satisfying driving experience. We pulled smoothly out of the drive and headed down the Cul-DeSac trail the right way - out to that evocative frontier of urban roads and convenience stores. My passenger declared he felt like a king. I smiled, remarking that behind the wheel of a Wrangler Rubicon one is, indeed, also ‘King of the metalled highway’. No-one dare challenge you as the message is unequivocally clear: ‘I don’t boast, but I’m the best’. You sit up high with a wide view and that unflappable feeling one gets when everything is in place is absolutely confidence inspiring - from the predictable and responsive handling to the convenient ergonomics of this
trailblazer. It seems to have captured something that the iconic Land Rover Defender has always lacked: space and superb comfort - and walloping performance! “Listen to her purr” said my passenger. “No. That’s my tummy rumbling. Tell you what Pard. Hows about we pull up at the next chuck wagon? When you drive a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon the only way is beef…burger style.” However’ I must point out that I had no beef with this beauty. It really is the epitome of on-road/off-road, uphill/ down canyon motoring versatility. If this was not around when The West was won, it’s certainly around now to win over western economies and hearts and minds too long tethered to the tail of recession. Minutes later we drove onto the fuel forecourt at the front one of those well-known American burger bars. “Need Gas honey?”asked the doll in the kiosk. “Already got it babe” I replied. “This car is a gas!” Returning from our jaunt, my passenger had to be prised out: he certainly wasn’t saddle sore. On the contrary, he just wanted more and more. That sums up the Wrangler Rubicon. It just keeps on giving, making easy going of the toughest terrain. Lasso one before they stop making them.
Powered by a 280bhp petrol Chrysler Pentastar V6, (There is a diesel option if you worry about fuel consumption of around 22mpg) driving through a five speed auto. box and Rock Track transfer case with extra low off-road gears, it’s well set to tackle the famously challenging Rubicon Trail, after which it is named. There’s even a push-button to enable extra axle articulation in extreme conditions. Naturally underbody protection is super tough because we’re talking here of the ‘King of the off-road’. He asked to sit in the driver’s seat. “Corr! It’s much more comfy than a Land Rover Defender. I can just see myself in one of these. It must cost a packet.” he said “A vehicle like this looks a million dollars as you would expect from 140

The new C-Class Saloon The best know no alternatives The all-new C-Class heralds a new chapter in the Mercedes-Benz success story and sets new standards in the premium medium-size category.
The clearly defined surfaces also deliberately display a degree of tension, lending them a modern and at the same time emotional character. Precise lines and sculptural surfaces create progressive light and shadow effects.
Thanks to an intelligent lightweightdesign concept boasting weight savings of up to 100 kilograms, excellent aerodynamics and new economical engines, the C-Class establishes new efficiency benchmarks in its segment. A host of new assistance systems offers safety of the highest standard, while a new optional air-sprung suspension provides for exemplary ride and driving comfort as well as nimble and agile handling. In terms of appearance the new C-Class adopts a progressive approach with its clear yet emotional design and its high-class interior. Many other innovations and equipment features underscore the Saloon’s energising comfort and refined sportiness. In all, the high-class appeal of the new C-Class feels like an “upgrade to a higher class of vehicle”.
High-class interior with fine details
The new C-Class offers sensuous and clear design and a host of technical innovations as well as a comprehensive scope of standard equipment and exemplary emissions and fuel consumption figures. Design On a visual level, the new C-Class represents a bold departure from its predecessor. Its striking, dynamic design exudes sensuous clarity and arouses emotions. Modern aesthetics were the source of inspiration for the new Saloon’s sensuous lines and surfaces, whose harmony and dynamism directly touch everyone. 142
The Mercedes-Benz designers have styled the interior on a level which is rarely encountered even in higher vehicle categories. This applies to the carefully chosen high-class materials and their pleasant touch and feel as well as to the precision of the finely crafted details. But also equally to a new design idiom which perfectly combines sensuousness and clarity with dynamic sportiness, and thus contributes to the highclass appeal of the interior. The driver and front passenger enjoy a great deal of space and luxury in an unobtrusive, modern style on board the new C-Class. This gives rise to a feel-good atmosphere which is new to this category of vehicle – settling into your seat in the C-Class is akin to the uplifting feeling of being upgraded from economy to business class on an airliner. The interior design demonstrates a bold new approach by MercedesBenz. Here the designers combine in accomplished style the architecture of the Mercedes-Benz sports cars with a totally new centre console featuring sporty flowing lines. In vehicles with automatic transmission, a large one-piece centre console panel performs an elegant sweep from the centre air vents to the armrest. Five round air vents lend the instrument panel a sporty touch.
With their metallic cool-touch effect they create a tangible contrast to the warm look of the other materials – such as the high gloss black trim in the centre console or the ARTICO man-made leather on the instrument panel. The “upgrade” feel duly continues with the controls. All switches have a high-quality, three-dimensional design befitting a luxury vehicle and benefit from a clear layout. A head-up display is also new to the C-Class. Like in a fighter jet, it displays important information directly in the driver’s field of vision on the front windscreen, thus providing for clear legibility and less distraction from the road ahead. The system provides information on speed, posted speed limits, navigation instructions and messages from the DISTRONIC system. Three different design and equipment lines for the exterior and interior each offer further scope for individualisation in addition to the standard equipment and appointments: SE, Sport and AMG Line. Peter Smith, the General Manager of Mercedes-Benz of Wolverhampton added “The new C-Class Saloon has brought a different dimension to our Mercedes-Benz new car range and will certainly catch anyone’s eye when walking into our showroom. I can’t help but be impressed by its stunning looks and dynamic features; it really has taken the C-Class range to a whole new level. This fantastic model has now arrived and is available to test drive, you can book your test drive by calling us on 01902 427897.”
