I cannot thank Neel and the team at Willows Dental enough! From the moment you are greeted to the moment you leave you feel like family. Being a very nervous and anxious patient, especially when it comes to teeth - Neel was quick enough to explain everything in detail & put me at ease. I’ve never met a dentist who is so passionate & caring about their patients’ long-term oral health. Having a dentist who can relate and doesn’t judge is a massive win! After only two visits, I can honestly say I will never go anywhere else. If you have a million questions, Neel is happy to answer them with complete honesty and reassurance as to what treatment can be done. No question or treatment is too big or small! The reception staff are very warm and welcoming... a real credit to the team. The positive energy is certainly cascaded through the building. Quite simply, this practice is amazing. Friendly, professional and nothing is too much trouble. The receptionists are welcoming and smile which is so important in a front of house position, and the hygienists are the most friendly and professional ones I have ever met. Neel and Vicki are not just fantastic dentists, but they also demonstrate an amazing compassion for those who are less fortunate in life. It is always a pleasurable experience visiting the practice, and I would recommend it to anyone seeking out a dental practice. Well done everyone, you are a credit to the profession. And to Neel and Vicki, congratulations on running such an amazing practice. Absolutely amazing! So friendly and helpful, nothing is ever too much. The hygienist is extremely professional and really cares about how you’re feeling. A credit to the practice! Can you believe, I actually enjoy going to the dentist! Thank you Willows! Excellent Dentists, they put you at ease and explain everything. Very friendly staff, and a nice relaxed atmosphere. Willows dental have been absolutely amazing, I could not recommend the service and the results high enough. I was under the amazing care of Vicky whilst there and the standard as well as personalised treatment was second to none. My teeth have never felt better nor has my confidence. I cannot thank her enough for this, I will never look back in terms of getting dental treatment anywhere else, they have set the bar high! Thank you. By far the best dental experience I’ve had. Friendly, informative and very professional at every appointment. Thank you, Rushaine. I feel privileged to be a patient at Willows. Amazing staff! friendly and helpful. A calm environment, I was scared to go to the dentist, the staff at the Willows have turned this around. Quite simply if Carlsberg did dentists! My daughter absolutely loves going to the dentist! My mum and I are both terrified of the dentist, but are perfectly happy here! If you are nervous go to Willows - they are the best! Never enjoyed dental visits, anxious and previous bad experiences until I started coming here. What a great team!! Very professional, always take time to explain properly so you know the options or what’s going to happen. Very gentle treatment, never rushed. I can’t rate Willows dental and implant centre enough. I needed a new dentist after my dentist left the practice. After having my initial consultation with Vicki, I was told I needed various work doing. Vicki was lovely and professional and so gentle. Despite feeling quite nervous with the procedures that needed doing... I was given the best care and attention and there was no need for me to be nervous at all. My faith in dentists have been restored thank you Vicki. If you need a dentist don’t hesitate to contact this practice... I guarantee you will get the best treatment.

Willows Dental & Implant Centre

Where there's a Willows, there's a way How we are keeping you safe post COVID Well it has been a weird 10 weeks hasn’t it and let’s be honest it’s still not really over, I don’t think there’s been anyone who hasn’t been affected in some way by all this craziness. However, so far at least it seems that things are getting better which is great news.

So what has changed in dentistry and what is likely to change? Well hopefully, if you are looked after at a practice like ours, you are used to having a nice friendly smile , a cup of something warm in a cosy waiting room and maybe some magazines to flick through, a dentist that you like and as far as dentists can be, not too bad an experience. Well some things have changed, and some things haven’t. The smiles are still there as is the friendly greeting. Now if you come to us by car, one of our caring team will come to your car and take your temperature (something we never had to do before), we do this using quite a cool gadget that looks like a small speed camera gun, which rather than giving you an unpleasant ticket, tells us your body temperature. Assuming it is not too raised above 37 degrees (normal body temperature) we’ll give you a buzzer like you sometimes get in restaurants while you are waiting for your table.

If you like we have a pretty big reception, so as long as you promise not to lick, sneeze or cough on anyone, you are welcome to come in. One of our team will grab you a drink while you liberally apply hand sanitiser to your hands. Our sanitiser contains Aloe Vera and smells quite nice, so we are told, you won’t be accused of smelling like an alcoholic after you’ve left us! You will notice the team are wearing visors and masks, these are to stop you kissing us (I am kidding). These are to protect you from any aerosols that might be produced and vice versa. As you would expect, every single gadget we use in our clinics are sterilised in our state of the art decontamination centres in machines called autoclaves that destroy and kill anything and everything by heating all of our instruments to 134 degrees centigrade at a pressure of 15psi (even hotter than the inside of a Breville cheese toasted sandwich). Now in dentistry some of our tools spray water and air. This isn’t ideal as you can imagine, so all of our surgeries have now been equipped with industrial air exchangers, obviously with us being us, ours pull out all the air in even our biggest surgeries twice a minute, so we aim to get all of the air out of a room at least 20 times in between patients, which renders the room cleaner than most operating rooms. Add in to that we are using technology from other industries such as fogging machines that spray out HOCL (a virus killing spray) and you have an environment cleaner than… well something that’s incredibly clean. You may also see the dentists and their nurses wearing some quite strange looking masks while we are doing our jobs, this is to keep you safe from us and us from you. It also helps if either of us have had garlic the night before. Well if this all sounds a little overkill, don’t worry, unlike some practices we’re not charging PPE surcharges, as the Covid alert level starts to drop we may be able to relax too , but in the meantime, we want you to know that your safety is our priority and certainly not your expense. We’re just here to give you great quality dental treatment, in a safe environment, with no pressure , no judgement, and great service. It’s just what we do.

Beth and Chloe

Yours sincerely, Neel Barchha.

The local

property market by Nick Berriman

Is there life after lockdown for the property market? The simple and straightforward answer is definitely a resounding ‘YES’ – the market is incredibly buoyant , and I genuinely did not think that would be the message I would be conveying in my first, post lockdown article for Wolverhampton West! When the country entered lockdown at the end of March I was quite convinced that the property market within the country would effectively close down for the remainder of the year. I was quite pessimistic and fully believed that no-one would want to move to a new house until 2021! During lockdown we continued to operate with key staff working from home to ensure that all of our sales progression work continued and sales that were currently agreed were still managed in the normal fashion. What surprised me was the levels of interest that were continually being received. Enquiries were high and, whilst we could not arrange viewings or undertake valuations, the demand was there. Between our three offices we had almost 170 viewings to arrange once lockdown restrictions were lifted. Logistically this was a bit of a nightmare, not least because we

only found out that the lockdown rules for estate agency were being lifted by a press announcement at 10pm allowing us to return to work the following morning at 9am! The market recommenced with an immediate release of the pent-up interest that came during lockdown, and it has not stopped yet! I am continually asked by clients, ‘’Why are you so busy?’’ and the truth is, I do not really know! We are finding that many people have spent their time during lockdown revising their housing requirements. They have decided that their house is too small or too big, they now want somewhere to work from home, they have an apartment with no garden and want some external space and, in a couple of cases, have decided they no longer want to live with their current partner! These factors, coupled with the fact that January and February were exceptionally busy as the Brexit fears finally abated, have come together to create a strong environment within the housing sector. As I write this article it is the 23rd of the month. The Tettenhall Office alone has already agreed sales on over 30 properties this month with a capital value of in excess of £10.75 million and we have received instructions to sell over 30 new properties with a capital value of in excess of £10.5 million.

This sort of market has not been seen for many years. Properties that were available pre-lockdown are now selling over asking price and we have seen multiple cases of competitive bidding meaning that sellers are having the luxury of choosing to whom they sell. What I feared would be a very quiet buyers’ market post lockdown has turned out to be exactly the opposite. As Caroline, our sales manager in Tettenhall, has said many times – she has not seen a market this busy in her thirty years plus of working within the industry. The lettings arm of our business remained fully active throughout lockdown, primarily dealing with the day to day management of our property portfolio, which is currently more than 300 properties. Although systems had to be adapted and altered it remained paramount that full compliance associated with the lettings process was maintained and emergency maintenance issues were resolved without delay. The level of enquires received through April and May was parallel with our sales departments, with new and existing tenants still actively looking to move, which was then reflected in our record-breaking June figures. The rental market always astounds us with the continual growth it demonstrates, and the forecast for July and August is already in excess of the equivalent months during 2019. Whilst all is good at the moment it remains to be seen what will happen next in the market. I shall look at this in my next article when I hope to be able to deliver equally positive news!

indow treatments can complement a room’s architecture, disguise a poor view, link the inside to the outside and add texture, colour and pattern.

CURTAINS, BLINDS, SHUTTERS AND MORE • Curtains can be made in a range of styles. Its heading determines how a curtain hangs, usually via a tape sewn onto the curtain back that is pulled to form pleats, gathers or other shapes. • Tap-tops, tie-tops, deep hems and eyelets slide onto a curtain pole and are often found on ready-made curtains. • Roller blinds are practical in bathrooms, kitchens, conservatories and children’s rooms, while Roman blinds suit many room types. Venetian (slatted) blinds are available in natural wood or eye-catching colours. • Shutters provide privacy and security and block out sound and light. Shakerstyle shutters are ideal for a Georgian or Victorian home. American shutters, with tilting louvres for letting in the light, work virtually anywhere. • Window film is an inexpensive option for a variety of situations – for example, the window of an overlooked room can be covered in opaque or patterned film that still allows light in.

Stained glass designs printed onto film are easily attached to any type of window.

Belbroughton By Rob Taylor

The ancient Saxon settlement is therefore situated in north east Worcestershire and was first mentioned in a charter in 817AD: it is steeped in both agricultural and industrial heritage. Central to the village is the 14th century Church of the Holy Trinity, but - more important to readers keen to take advantage of the recent lifting of lockdown restrictions - there is a prominent pub, The Bell, at the centre of things.

One of the few positives to be found amid the coronavirus crisis is the relative ease with which we are able to find idyllic hotspots, right under our noses. Closed shops and restaurants have forced even the laziest among us to venture out into the great outdoors. Even at the height of the pandemic, when so much was off-limits to the would-be traveller, many of us revelled in the near-unspoilt beauty of this green and pleasant land.

So much is known about the ‘usual’ beauty spots but there really is much more available – even in the Black Country, where the legacy of industry can sometimes sully the minds of folk looking for scenic walking trails and some upclose-and-personal time with nature. During my adventures in this turbulent time I have discovered Belbroughton: a charming village located south of Stourbridge and east of Kidderminster. 18

A chat with a friendly chap I encounter on my meandering walk in May informs me that there was until last year another: The Queens. Once considered one of the region’s best foodie destinations, the pub, which was housed in a 16th century building, was a regular feature in the Good Pub Guide, and was the recipient of a Bib Gourmand award for its food. It was the only pub in the Midlands to receive the accolade – the equivalent of a Michelin-star – under the tenure of top Michelin-starred chef Andy Waters. It’s now on the open market. Being a big foodie myself – and especially fond of the occasional restaurant review for this esteemed organ – I am dismayed to hear this. Although, I quickly recover my composure when I remember the award-winning treats that await me when I next get chance to visit local Indian restaurant, Five Spice, on Hollies Hill. town & village life magazine | july/august 2020

Galton’s Mill is the most prominent example of the area’s industrial past. It was installed in 1793 and contains the oldest example of a cast-iron waterwheel in England. In the 11th century the mill, known then as Savage’s Mill, was used for grinding corn, only to be latterly used from 1751 by Birmingham gunmakers Farmer and Galton, who invested £5000 because of the power potential of the Belne Brook, to make their famous muzzle-loading flintlock musket.

Today the village is most famous for its Scarecrow Weekend - a cheerful business started in 1996 in which villagers create scarecrows and prop them up outside their homes, while attracting thousands of villagers. I feel some relief that today’s summer sun poses no threat of the Belne Brook bursting its banks and flooding the place, as it did in September 2008. Back then the water tore through the village causing structural damage to homes, sweeping away cars and even crumpling tarmac. Isaac Nash then took over in 1846 to make scythes (to the uninitiated: scary crooked blades used for hacking crops in farming). This landmark business, known as Nash Works, continued until 1942. At its peak it was worldrenowned and awarded prizes at London exhibitions in 1851 and 1862, for its innovation in melding Swedish iron with Sheffield steel.

Not so many cars or tarmac is required in lockdown but a pity all the same. Thank goodness I’m on foot for the remainder of my journey. At the crossroads in the nearby hamlet of Bell Heath, there is a landmark boulder of some significance. A plaque reads ‘Boulder from Arenig Mountain in North Wales’, brought here by the Welsh ice-sheet in the Glacial Period.’ This really makes you realise how our three months in lockdown pale into insignificance in the scheme of history. www.townandvillagelifemag.co.uk

The History

of the Pandemic

By Catherine Rose Empire and millions of people died from its rapidly fatal effects. Another outbreak occurred during the Crimean War between 1853 and 1856. Nurse Florence Nightingale became famous at this time for her tireless efforts to improve unsanitary conditions.

A vaccine was created in 1885. Smallpox, caused by the variola virus, is one of the most devastating diseases. Various outbreaks have occurred over the centuries, the earliest around 10,000 BC. During the twentieth century alone, smallpox was responsible for up to five hundred million deaths worldwide. It was declared by WHO to be eradicated in 1980.

Despite our increased global mobility making pandemics more likely, diseases have crossed country borders for centuries.

O

ne of the earliest pandemics, the Justinian plague, began in 500 AD, spreading from Egypt into Palestine, the Byzantine Empire and then Europe. Similar to bubonic plague, it killed twenty-six per cent of the world’s population – around five hundred million – thwarting Roman Emperor Justinian’s plans to revitalise the Roman Empire. 1347 saw the first wave of the Black Death, a pneumonic form of bubonic plague – one of the most devastating pandemics in human history. Originating in Asia, it is likely to have travelled 26

along the Silk Route and then by ship into Europe. It is believed, as with later outbreaks, that it was spread via fleas contaminated with the yersinia pestis bacteria. The disease is estimated to have killed hundreds of millions of people worldwide and up to sixty per cent of the population in Europe. Characterised by a fever and buboes, the Black Death could kill within hours. It lasted until 1352 and had huge economic and social repercussions. Instances of bubonic plague returned over subsequent centuries. In 1665, the Great Plague of London killed twenty per cent of its population. The term ‘quarantine’ was coined in Venice referring to a period of forty days – the optimum time necessary for the spread of an epidemic to be contained. Cities that implemented quarantines were found to be less affected by fast-transmitting diseases. Numerous cholera pandemics began in Russia in 1815. Acquired through contaminated water and food, the British Army unwittingly spread this serious bacterial illness across the British

COVOD-19 is not the first pandemic virus to have originated in animals. The Spanish flu, which struck worldwide during 1918/19, is believed to have started in birds. Although nicknamed the Spanish flu, it appeared in Kansas, America in 1918. Due to World War I, many European countries had news blackouts and initial reports came from Madrid, leading people to believe it had begun in Spain. It was able to spread rapidly in the unsanitary and confined conditions of the trenches. Unlike regular flu, it targeted healthy young people and came at a time when populations had already been decimated. This flu was particularly deadly, leading to severe bronchial pneumonia. It infected a third of the world’s population and resulted in around fifty to one hundred million deaths. Today, we are better informed about the spread of disease, our lives are more sanitary and scientists can more easily predict outcomes and implement strategies that contain it.

Stay safe and well.

N.D.Walters

The Carpet and Flooring Experts Behind the small exterior of Sedgley-based carpet and flooring specialists, N.D. Walters, lies a vast 6,000 square foot warehouse that’s filled with the best brands in carpets and flooring, as well as an extensive range of budget designs. As owner, Nick Walters, explains: “We supply all types of carpets, laminates, vinyls and rugs. We have a fantastic selection of Karndean, Amtico, Furlong, Quick-Step and V4 Wood flooring to choose from, as well as carpet ranges from leading manufacturers like, Axminster, Brintons, Greendale and Adams Carpets.” In fact, the family-run company has an impressive dedicated Karndean showroom: “We’re a Platinum retailer for Karndean and our extensive recently refurbished showroom is second in size only to Karndean’s itself.”

All of the company’s products are extremely competitively priced, as the business works closely with the Greendale Group, which is the largest carpet and flooring buying company in the UK. “Being a member of Greendale means that we can offer a huge range of products, but still compete in terms of price too, passing the savings on to the customer.” And there are always bargains to be had: “We have a lot of end-of-roll stock available all the time, so there are plenty of exciting prices to be found in store.”

28

And, there’s something to suit every home décor at the showroom: “We cater for all styles and tastes - we have very traditional designs, as well as the most up-to-date and fashionable ranges.” There’s also an impressive selection of rugs to choose from too. “Rugs instantly give the home a really cosy and comfortable feel and can complete the look of your room perfectly.”

Earning an excellent reputation in the industry – and celebrating 44 years in business this year – N.D. Walters has become the premier choice for homeowners and commercial clients alike, who are looking for superior products and service. “We’ve got years of experience in the trade, as well as an expertly trained team, so we can offer our customers plenty of advice. We also have our very own team of expert fitters who take care of installation.”

The company also offer free home consultations and come highly recommended by the Carpet Foundation - an independent organisation who monitor and check on carpet retailers to ensure standards of quality and service. “We carry out a lot of insurance work across the entire West Midlands region and complete jobs for many different organisations – and completed a project at Himley Hall.” And N.D. Walters has also been featured on both DIY SOS and Cowboy Builders where they helped out two families by supplying the flooring that made their home transformation complete.

So, if you haven’t visited before, be sure to make a trip to N.D. Walters before you begin any home improvements this Summer it’ll be well worth your while.

Pa r g e t e r s

New furniture styles for your home “But I can assure you that it won’t cost you to shop at Pargeters, very often we are cheaper and will price match the leading brands. We pride ourselves on offering the lowest possible prices combined with the highest standard of customer service.” Indeed, the store is renowned for its exceptional service and that’s why it has remained a firm favourite with locals, ever since its doors first opened over 90 years ago.

If you’re busy updating, improving or redesigning your home interior this summer, you’ll no doubt be keen to find a selection of quality and contemporary furniture to complete the new look. Displaying modern designs, from leading British brands, over three floors, there are looks to suit every home interior style. And, what’s more there’s an incredible 25% off most leading brands as part of the company’s amazing summer sale event. As Miles explains: “We have got lots of fantastic new displays at the showroom and we’re delighted to offer our customers a substantial discount in our summer sale event.”

A change in direction has taken place over the last five years at the family-run store, which has seen the business focusing on being an upholstery specialist that no longer sells bedroom furniture, curtains and carpets. Now instead, there is a brand-new department that specialises in Sherborne lift and rise beds, reclining chairs - which are all exempt from VAT - as well as sofas to match. With all of this and more you’re sure to find outstanding designs and style at affordable prices when you pay a visit. In fact, customers at Pargeters are always surprised by the independent stores’ low prices, as Miles explains: “Sometimes an established business and single store furniture shop can be deemed to be more expensive to buy from than larger group stores.

Unlike their competitors, the staff at Pargeters aren’t on commission, which means their focus is entirely on helping you make the purchase that’s right for you – if, of course, you decide to buy from the company. “We don’t sell ‘add-ons’ – like finance or insurance, which some companies use to boost their profits,” adds Miles. Pargeters are the longest established premier stockist of G Plan furniture. In recognition of this they are offering customers a special promotion of 30% off all G Plan furniture in the summer sale. The company offers free delivery within a 50 mile radius and will also take your old items away free of charge. So, whatever you’ve got in mind for your home interior this summer, make it look amazing with the addition of a quality buy from Pargeters.

PARGETERS SOCIAL DISTANCING MEASURES We are offering customers the opportunity to shop safely on their own or with family members (maximum of 3 people). The showroom will also be open to 2 more walk-in customers at any one time. The current social distancing guidelines will be adhered to at all times. Staff will be available to assist you and answer any questions while following the current guidelines. Personal Protective Equipment will be used in the showroom by all staff.

Please ring (01384 394176) to book your preferred appointment time at the showroom between the hours of 9am and 4pm Monday to Saturday. Free customer car parking available adjacent to the showroom, please ask for directions.

Looks can be deceiving, and if you have never set foot inside Sandford Carpets before you’d be forgiven for thinking that the Trysull Road-based business is merely a small shop. As manager Kim explains: “We’ve got a huge range of carpets and flooring at our showroom that suit all requirements and budgets. Customers are amazed when they see our enormous warehouse - that’s stocked with 90 rolls of

carpet – and always comment on our low prices.” In fact, the company has reached an impressive milestone this year and, to celebrate the showroom has been treated to a brand-new look. “We’re celebrating 30 years in business this year, which is a massive achievement, and, to mark the anniversary we have completely refurbished our showroom.” There are carpets from the all of the top brands at Sandford, like Brintons, Ulster and Westex, as well as a choice of wooden, vinyl, engineered and Karndean flooring. As an independent business, it’s hard to believe that the company can be so competitive when it comes to pricing, but Kim and her husband Gary

Brits:

we don’t mean what we say When a member of the online global community Reddit asked the question “Non-British people of Reddit, what about Britain baffles you?” they received almost 40,000 comments in response. Here are five things about British culture that particularly puzzle non-Brits:

1. SARCASM The British are famous for their sarcastic turn of phrase and a recent youGov poll asked a group of Brits and a group of Americans to interpret the meaning of various well-known expressions and phrases. While most members of the British group took the expression “with the greatest respect” to have pretty much the opposite meaning, more than half of the American group took it at face value. One Reddit member, shocked at the way her British boyfriend spoke to his family members, wailed: “They’re so rude to each other. FOR FUN.”

By Kate McLelland 2. BRITISH NOSH Food is also an area that causes misunderstanding and controversy. Watching The Great British Bake Off, American Britt Rivera was shocked to find that a yorkshire pudding wasn’t actually a pudding, tweeting “yorkshire pudding is a little bread bowl, not a yogurt-like dessert?” With the exception of Australia and New Zealand, Britain is one of very few places where Marmite is actually enjoyed. Reddit users have conducted their own opinion poll on the famous spread, with one Slovenian contributor commenting: “I remember my first experience with Marmite was so terrible. Someone brought that thing to our house and I tried it with a spoon ... so disgusting!!”

3. UK ACCENTS According to the British Library, we have almost eighty different accents and dialects in the British Isles, so perhaps it’s not surprising that this was another frustration for overseas Reddit users. “So many accents. People fifteen minutes away having another accent,” one moaned.

4. OUR LOVE OF TEA Responding to Reddit’s “What about Britain baffles you?” challenge, another user stormed “your obsession with tea!” Writing for The Week magazine, American author and journalist Jessica Pan describes how she sensed growing resentment amongst her English colleagues after regularly refusing their offers of tea: “I might as well have said ‘I do not want to be part of your society’ or ‘your tea is gross and so are you.’ That’s because in Britain, I soon learned, rejecting a cup of tea is like rejecting a gesture of friendship.”

5. OUR MANY NAMES The many different names we use to describe our island nation has also caused a good deal of confusion, with some overseas observers unsure whether to call us Great Britain, the British Isles, the British Islands, the United Kingdom or just plain old Britain. To confuse things even further, the UK’s official name is the ‘United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland’. During our long and colourful history, British people have absorbed the best bits from several different cultures, so perhaps it’s not surprising that such a melting pot of habits and customs continues to cause bewilderment. It’s clear that our culture is seen by others as eccentric, weird, confusing – even a tad annoying – but it’s equally clear that we Brits have no intention of changing our ways for anyone.

Tech for

‘the new normal’ L

ockdowns may be largely lifted but we’re going back to a very different world at work and at school: many more of us are working from home at least some of the time, and school pupils and college students are getting used to doing more online learning.

That can be a challenge, because when most of us bought the things we have in our homes we weren’t thinking about using them for work – so for example dining tables may be great for chatting with family or friends, but they’re not ideal for long periods on a laptop. If you or others in your household are going to be spending longer periods working, especially on computers, comfort isn’t just nice: it’s essential. Spending too much time with poor posture or awkward working spaces can be bad for your health, as it increases the risk of physical stresses and strains. In some cases that can lead to painful repetitive strain injuries.

The good news is that you don’t need to do much to make your working or studying environment safe. It’s all about right angles: when you sit, your back should be straight, your feet flat on the ground (or on a footrest) and your body at right angles, so your forearms and your thighs should be horizontal and your back, upper arms and calves vertical. If you can afford it, invest in a good quality chair with back support and a decently padded or sprung base – your back and bum will thank you for it in the long term – and if you get one with wheels, invest in a floor protector too. Wheels can do serious damage to carpets and laminate flooring.

Office chairs don’t need to look like office chairs: this chair from IKEA comes in an attractive and easy-toclean white, so it doesn’t make your room look like a meeting room.

JÄRVFJÄLLET chair, £150, IKEA

A powerful laptop with a clear, large screen is essential. Techradar calls the 14-inch Acer Swift 3 “the best budget laptop in the world.”

If your Wi-Fi is slow, the culprit is probably the router: if it’s an older one or came with your broadband service, it probably isn’t the fastest.

PAELLA

ENJOY THE FLAVOURS OF SPAIN WITH THIS CLASSIC RICE DISH. IT MAKES A GREAT ONE-PAN SUPPER SERVED WITH CRUSTY BREAD AND A GREEN SALAD.

Ready in: 1 hour Serves: 4

Ingredients 1 tbsp virgin olive oil 225g chorizo, diced 1 large onion, chopped 275g paella rice Few strands saffron 1.1l fish or chicken stock Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 red pepper, deseeded and chopped 100g frozen peas 2 tsp paprika 250g cooked peeled prawns, thawed if frozen Few fresh mussels, scrubbed 44

Method Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan over a medium heat. Add the chorizo to the pan and fry for 3-4 minutes. Remove from the pan with a slotted spoon and set aside. Fry the onion in the pan juices for 5 minutes then stir in the rice and saffron and cook while stirring for 1 minute. Pour in the stock, season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring frequently. Return the chorizo sausage to the pan and add the pepper, peas, paprika and prawns. Simmer gently for a further 10 minutes until the rice is nearly tender and all the liquid has been absorbed, stirring occasionally. Top with the mussels and cover and cook for a further 4-5 minutes until the mussels open (discard any that do not open). Adjust the seasoning to taste then serve from the pan.

TIP To make a vegetarian version omit the chorizo, prawns and mussels and replace with a selection of vegetables of your choice, such as celery, green beans, chopped tomatoes and courgette. Use vegetable stock and fry a couple of crushed garlic cloves with the onion to give extra flavour. town & village life magazine | july/august 2020

S u m m e r Gardening

Tips are provided by Ann Winwood, Lealans Garden Centre, Wolverhampton

As we move from June into July and August there’s still time to plant larger pots of Geraniums, Fuchsias, Cosmos and Dahlias to fill in any gaps in borders.

Water to get established and feed on a weekly basis. Dead head regularly and you’ll have colour through to the first autumn frosts, which hopefully will be late starting. Keep sowing or planting salad crops such as lettuce, spinach, spring onions and radish in the veg patch to get a continuous harvest. Use very fine netting to cover cabbages, cauliflowers, carrots and other particularly susceptible vegetables against flies, pigeons and butterflies. Harvest peas and runner beans regularly whilst they are young and tender, freeze any spares for home grown vegetables during the winter months. Keep beans and peas moist and spray over the foliage to encourage pods to set. There’s plenty of choice in the herbaceous sections at the moment as well as the ever popular Lupins – there’s a large range of new Salvias, Monardas and Echinacea as well as Delphiniums and the butterfly-loving

Verbena bonanariensis and the ever popular perennial Geraniums. Hostas are good for a shady spot with their coloured foliage, watch out for the slugs though, especially if the ground is damp. Now is a good time to add new plants to your pond. There’s a good selection of marginal and deep water plants available. Keep marginals on a ledge at the edges of the pool and not too deep – Iris, Caltha, Primulas and Bulrushes are all good examples. For the middle/deeper parts of the pool water lilies are good and can give good protection for any fish you have in the pool. Most plants come ready planted in aquatic pots so just need placing into the pool. Don’t forget marginals need not be planted in the pool – if you have a damp, boggy area plants like Iris, Primulas and Lobelias will all grow happily.

For new potatoes in October, or at Christmas, plant seed potatoes in tubs in July and August. Growth will finish in October, leave the tubers in their pots until required for cooking. Remember they’ll need frost protection once the winter frosts appear in November and December. To complete another gardening cycle or start a new one depending on how you look at it the spring flowering bulbs will be appearing in garden centres from the end of August! If you want Hyacinths in flower for Christmas, they must be planted and put into a dark cool place in September. Most varieties require an 8-10 week cool period followed by 2-3 weeks of warmer conditions to bring them into flower. Use a compost specifically for bulbs as it will contain charcoal to keep the soil sweet.

For the safety of our customers and team members, we have implemented social distancing measures throughout the store. These measures have been in operation since the reopening of the centre and have proved to be very efficient in the current exceptional circumstances, keeping customer inconvenience to a minimum. 54

The perfect finishing touch‌ For many of us, our gardens have been our much-needed solace throughout the trials of this chaotic year. Whether it has sparked an outdoor hobby or simply served as our safe-haven for a socially distanced barbecue with our loved ones. If anything, our gardens deserve an extra splash of special recognition this year - which is where outdoor lighting will prove a fitting companion!

Not only will lights flatteringly show off the work gone into your garden, they provide a beautiful, calming ambience to enjoy hours after the sun has set. Sometimes our summer gatherings are relished even greater in a softly moonlit evening rather than hysterically fanning ourselves from the scorching sun of day.

Whatever your garden yearns for, Lighting R Us will be able to match it with their exceptional range of lighting, both indoor and outdoor. They’re also equipped with first-rate knowledge on where best to put lights which will flatter your garden most!

With countless styles available, there will be lighting to complement all gardens and for every purpose. Ground lights will instantly illuminate pathways and patios, while lanterns will inject some vintage glamour. From solar powered to battery; wall lights to post - the list goes on...

Recently, the company worked with Garden Designer, Jo Hobbs (no relation to Richard) to create a dream garden design for Hagley-based client, Sue Mcfarling.

This was a fantastic project to design and work on. It started as a totally blank canvas, which can be a tricky starting point but Sue wanted something with real impact and was totally receptive to my ideas. Richard and Duncan are brilliant at turning my designs into reality and this has been a great three way collaboration with them and Sue. I’m thrilled with the finished garden and more importantly Sue is too. And, Sue was thrilled with her new garden, as she explains: Jo Hobbs, my garden designer recommended Evenfield Ltd to construct my dream garden. Richard and his team worked tirelessly on this project, sorting out any teething troubles a new build can create quickly and efficiently, nothing was too much trouble.

So, whatever you’ve got planned, give the expert team at Evenfield a call today. • Landscape, Design and Build • Groundworks and Construction • Paving and Driveways • Fencing and Gates • Tree Work and Ground Clearance For further details please call: Richard on: 01746 781209 M: 07813 811 501 E: richard@evenfield.co.uk www.townandvillagelifemag.co.uk

Protect your car with a parking post from Profence

There’s been a rise in car thefts from driveways in recent years and so, protecting your vehicle has never been more important. Fortunately, there’s an easy way to deter thieves and make sure that your car stays on your driveway, as Shane Gamble explains: “Here at Profence we’re really pleased to be able to offer our customers a range of parking posts which will serve to protect their vehicle” Although Profence are fencing experts they also install bollards for both domestic and commercial clients so moving into parking posts was a natural progression. “There are many options when it comes to parking posts: there are posts that fold down, lift out and also push into the ground and we supply and install them all.” Whatever your requirements the Profence team can help you find the parking post that best suits your needs. “A small driveway will only need one post located behind the vehicle whereas a larger driveway will need several posts strategically placed for proper protection.”

60

Installing a post is a really simple way to give you peace-of-mind, whether your leaving your car on your driveway overnight or whilst you’re away on holiday. “There is no doubt that a parking post is a real deterrent to thieves because it shows that the homeowner takes security seriously and is doing what they can to safeguard their vehicle from being targeted.” Of course, the presence of a post also ensures your driveway is kept clear: “Posts can be used to keep parking spaces free too, which is particularly useful for our commercial clients.” Whatever the client’s requirements the Profence team are always onhand to offer help and advice. “We help our clients find the solution that’s right for them so that they can protect their vehicle,” adds Shane.

So, whatever car you drive make sure that it is protected with the help of a parking post from Profence.

THRILLS AS SAFARI PARK SET TO FULLY REOPEN…

and limiting our daily admission numbers. We will be encouraging guests to continue to book online, so we can adhere to government guidance and safely manage how many people we admit to our Park. We look forward to welcoming more guests back soon and hope they have a great day with us.”

Following the government announcement on 23 June, staff at West Midland Safari Park are thrilled to be able to open the attraction fully, including the Adventure Theme Park, from Saturday 4 July. Since 15 June the Park has only been partially open, allowing guests to visit the four-mile safari drivethrough. The announcement on Tuesday means the Park can now also reopen its walk-through attractions, rides, restaurants and shops. Staff are continuing to work hard, ensuring that various safety measures are in place, such as regular disinfecting of public areas, additional hand sanitiser stations, limiting the number of people allowed to enter shops and restaurants and kitting out the theme park ride seats with stickers, to ensure social distancing is adhered to. Additionally, the Park has invested in a highly effective product called ‘Zoono’, a revolutionary antimicrobial protection spray, which once applied lasts for 30 days, significantly reducing the spread of harmful bacteria and viruses, including Covid-19. This will be applied to all customer contact surfaces, including the rides.

Summer is usually a very busy time for the Midlands attraction, but the Park is limiting visitor numbers, meaning that all guests will have to book in advance, via the Park’s website: www.wmsp.co.uk, where they can also find information on the new safety measures. Guests can also expect the number of tables in the restaurants to be reduced but takeaway options will be available from several other eateries. West Midland Safari Park will be fully open from Saturday 4 July, with attractions including Land of the Living Dinosaurs, Ice Age exhibit, Discovery Trail and Boj’s Giggly Park playground. Admission prices are £24.00 for adults, £20.00 for children aged 3-15 years and £22.00 for concessions. Children under the age of three are free. Admission includes a summer Free Return Ticket. Rides for the adventure Theme Park are charged extra. Further information about West Midland Safari Park is available from the Park’s website: www.wmsp.co.uk or by telephone 01299 402114. Find out more on the Safari Park’s official Facebook page: www.facebook.com/WestMidSafari/

Managing Director of the Park, Chris Kelly, said “We welcome the news that we can now open the rest of the Park, including the Adventure Theme Park. Our teams have been working incredibly hard to prepare all areas of the Park, ensuring our guests have a safe and enjoyable visit. “Some of the new safety measures include leaving empty seats and rows on the rides, social distancing measures for the queues, kiosks and restaurants 64

PAYCARE IN THE COMMUNITY

VolunteerS’ Week Community plays a huge role in Paycare and volunteering is very much an integral part of our ethos. There’s always lots going on during June to mark Volunteers Week but of course this year has been very different. The team has been continuing to do our bit to benefit Wolverhampton and the wider community, finding creative ways to help organisations secure valuable resources and equipment for workers on the frontline and to support those at higher risk, such as the food donations we’ve delivered to Good Shepherd to help those experiencing homelessness in the city. CEO Kevin Roger says: “It’s the little things that businesses can help with that can make a real practical difference. It’s important, now more than ever, to continue showing our commitment and to make sure those in our communities continue to receive the vital support they need.”

HaVen Helpline

SponSorSHip

A local charity which supports women and children at risk from domestic abuse has seen demand for advice soar during the Coronavirus pandemic lockdown.

The Haven Wolverhampton runs a 24-hour helpline and launched an additional live chat facility (sponsored by Paycare) in 2018 as a way for people to directly reach out to the charity rather than being signposted through the police or other agencies.

With self-referrals already 13 times higher than agency referrals during the first year of the live chat being live, now more than ever it is important that services like this are available to women in dire need of support. During the first few weeks of lockdown, The Haven saw a 60% increase in website visits. Jade Secker, Fundraising Manager at The Haven Wolverhampton, said: “Women in dire need of support can use the service discreetly and receive responses quickly which is crucial in many situations. Our dedicated live chat service is kindly sponsored by our long-term partners, Paycare, which has essentially given us the funding to help so many more vulnerable women and children in Wolverhampton and surrounding areas to feel empowered to reach out.” The Haven helpline is 24/7 and is free from a landline – 08000 194 400. The live chat is available from 9am to 5pm every weekday, and those in need can visit www.havenrefuge.org.uk for access.

JULY/AUGUST, 2020

is heaven-scent for Policyholders! A chance meeting between Paycare’s Kevin Rogers and Molton Brown’s Sarah White has led to a new partnership which is giving thousands the chance to refresh, unwind and uplift their senses! The pair met while watching a football match in Scotland prior to lockdown, and got talking about their respective roles and their commitment to helping people manage their physical and mental wellbeing. And so, the connection was formed between the Health

Cash Plan provider and the luxury fragrance brand – which has seen all Policyholders able to access exclusive products and offers from the fragrance, bath, body and hair care, and home collections between June 1st and 22nd. While it won’t replace the summer trips and welldeserved breaks people across the UK are missing out on this year, it’s hoped the treats will lift the spirits of Policyholders – and there are likely to be more exclusive offers launched later in the year too.

suPPorting staff and Policyholders

tHrougH CoVid-19

Businesses in the Black Country are no doubt under a huge strain to ensure their operations survive and overcome financial uncertainty as a result of COVID-19, in addition to the pressure of protecting jobs and staff wellbeing, and adapting to different working methods. Paycare is no exception – with a 30-strong team as well as the health and wellbeing of the 40,000 Policyholders across the UK to consider.

The team has worked hard to overcome challenging obstacles and ensure everyone stays safe and well, through signposting towards service such as mental health support and counselling, Online Health Assessments and Paycare Perks; working even more closely with Corporate Groups and increasing the volume of resources being provided to support the increased demand around health and wellbeing of their teams; and hosting E-Clinics through the Black Country Chamber of Commerce to support Patrons and Members through this challenging time. As a thank you for the passion, determination and hard work shown by the Paycare team, there has been an increased

flexibility around working hours, additional days of annual leave and early finishes to ensure they feel well rested and supported physically and emotionally, as well as providing small but highly-impactful rewards and recognition. CEO Kevin Rogers said: “Showcasing your loyalty to staff can absolutely be the difference in whether your business is able to merely survive, or absolutely thrive, through this pandemic and long afterwards. And hopefully, working together, we can help implement a lasting change in the way that business owners feel able to protect the health and wellbeing of their staff now and in the future — no matter what life throws their way.”

A big From thank you

the Willows

It’s our connections not our isolations that makes us stronger Local engineering firms have been designing ventilators and amazingly some pizza shops have been using their ovens to bend the plastic sheets to make shielding visors.

Nobody loves tough times, but there’s something about them especially in England that really brings out the best in people. I for one have loved the community spirit that’s been shown. In a time of isolation, it’s been amazing to see how many people rallied around. I’ve loved seeing all the rainbows painted on windows and outside houses while delivering essential medicines around the local area. I’ve loved clapping for our selfless NHS workers (although it would be nice if the government paid them all better too). I’ve seen at one end of the spectrum Women’s Institute groups and embroidery clubs sewing surgical gowns for the hospitals , and at the other end I’ve seen people with 3D printers, designing visor holders and printing them in the thousands. 70

So many people have pulled together during this time. I’ve been especially thankful to my team who in between answering calls from hundreds of patients in discomfort over lockdown and arranging to get them emergency tooth filling kits, recementing kits and essential medicine. They’ve rallied around and made temporary food banks for the community for those who were struggling financially. We had so many people come and bring food for families that were struggling to feed themselves and their kids. In conjunction with Tettenhall Round Table we managed to get goody bags to the nursing staff at the hospitals, who’d run out of toothpaste, toothbrushes and toiletries over this time. The boys at the Round Table got loads of sponsorship and donations and kindly delivered them to the grateful staff at New Cross Hospital. Let’s not forget Captain Tom who raised a phenomenal amount of money for NHS charities, an amazing achievement. New synergies have been formed such as Creative agencies like Jask Creative partnering

up with Wolverhampton-based homeless charity Good Shepherd who’ve helped people with mental health issues getting shelter. Haven, the Wolverhampton-based shelter for victims of domestic abuse, has seen a rise in domestic abuse and has done amazingly well at keeping victims safe during this unprecedented difficult time. There are thousands of other stories of people helping others out during this time, and I’m sorry that we’ve missed some out here. Us humans are supposed to live in communities, we’re designed to be tribal and each to have our own strengths and work together. By supporting each other we all become stronger. This won’t be the last pandemic we face but I’m positive that having seen the way our friends and businesses have rallied together, we will all come through this with massive innovation and significantly stronger than we’ve ever been. It’s a funny dichotomy but while in isolation, somehow, we’ve managed to connect even more. And if anything has come out of this time, this can only be a good thing.

Hickton Family Funeral Directors

I

n 1909 Joe Hickton, a wellknown carpenter, builder, undertaker, local counsellor and one-time Mayor of Rowley Regis, opened a dedicated funeral home located in Lower High Street, Cradley Heath in the Black Country to focus on the funeral directing side of business. Along with his wife Rose, the local midwife, they became a large part of the local community, with the local saying being “she brings them into the world, and he takes them out!” Their son William ‘Bill’ Hickton came into the business in 1937 and the father and son partnership began carrying out funerals across Cradley Heath and the surrounding areas, with Bill eventually taking over sole control of the business in 1957 after Joe retired. Bill’s son Trevor came into the business in 1971 working closely with his father to continue building the company reputation.

www.townandvillagelifemag.co.uk

Trevor inherited J. E. W. Hickton Funeral Directors after his father Bill passed away in 2000. In 2005 the company was registered as a Limited UK company along with a name change to what it is today, Trevor E.W. Hickton Ltd but now trading as Hickton Family Funeral Directors following his three children entering the business in more recent years from 2006. As it stands now the company has five funeral homes, Cradley Heath, Halesowen, Bartley Green, Castle Bromwich and Wolverhampton, each ensuring the highest standards across the business for bereaved families at their time of need. Rest assured all your wishes and requirements will be met, whether this being at time of a recent death or if you were looking to purchase a prepaid funeral plan.

We can provide: • New and modern decorated funeral homes and offices with a warm and welcoming feel. • Fully trained, qualified and dedicated staff. • New and modern funeral vehicles maintained to a high specification. • We offer expert aftercare bereavement support as part of using our services, at no additional fee. • Exclusive partnership with Golden Charter Funeral Plans.

All equipment used was disinfected before and after. All water bottles were individually recognised by the owner’s name. On arrival everyone was temperature tested and registered. Anyone registering above 37.2 was denied entry and told to return home. Further sessions were overseen by age group supervisors strictly following identical criteria. We have been guided in this approach by our own “spread of disease” risk assessments and those of our Medical Officer and Health and Safety Officer as well as following the RFU “Return to Rugby Road Map “and“ Practical Coaching Risk Assessment” always adhering to current Government guidelines. Of all sports rugby clearly involves more combined physical contact than any other whether that be tackling, the lineout, rucks or mauls or at the extreme sixteen puffing and blowing forwards binding in a scrum. The jury is out as to when competitive rugby may return at the “community” level and many cannot see this starting until December at the earliest.

Should that be so revised fixture lists will need to be conjured for the 2020/2021 Season. As you will appreciate plenty to ponder over. With the 2019/2020 season closing six weeks early, like all other clubs, we lost income that is generated from gate money, food and liquid refreshments and an array of on and off field functions. In our case the May 15th marquee Corporate Lunch and Summer Ball was cancelled. There are currently plans afoot to reinstate these mid -October, again obviously subject to Government guidelines and practicalities. We will see as the weeks roll by. When the season restarts National One North will have some new faces. Caldy were promoted, Otley, Preston Grasshoppers and Scunthorpe were relegated and Hinckley were level transferred to National Two South. Dropping down to our league were Hull Ionians and Rotherham and through promotion Blaydon, Harrogate and Bournville. Bournville and Rotherham have never before been in our league. Unable to finish their fixtures to escape relegation the Stourbridge Lions will now be playing in Midlands West North Two. Richard Bate is their incoming Chairman and they have a new coaching group headed up by Paul Meakin ably assisted by Stuart Doolittle and Jacob John. Hopefully in the next edition we can be more positive. Stay well everyone and

THE PERFECT COUNTRY HAVEN AWAY FROM THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE... If you’re looking for the perfect place to stay in the Black Country then you’ll be delighted to find New Wood Farm. Located in Stourton - just outside of Wollaston – New Wood Farm boasts two beautifully renovated self-catering cottages that lie in a tranquil and picturesque countryside setting that’s within easy reach of Stourbridge, Kingswinford and Kinver. The converted farm buildings have been designed to offer guests a cosy ‘home from home’ and have been lovingly restored by owners Linda and Mick Thornton, who were keen to retain their original character whilst creating a stylish and modern interior. Welcoming visitors from all over the world, the couple have long been ensuring that their guests enjoy a wonderful stay. As Linda explains: “We have been hosting the barn for over 20 years and have had guests stay with us from as far away as Australia and America, as well as from all over the UK. We also have a lot of local people stay with us too.” Holiday makers, business people, those visiting relatives and local people needing a place to stay in between a house move, renovation works or even to recuperate after surgery - have all enjoyed what New Wood has to offer. “There are plenty of different reasons why guests choose to stay with us at New Wood but we hope that the reason they return time and time again is

because of the enjoyable stay they’ve had.” The Barn sleeps four people and has two bathrooms and The Stable provides accommodation for two. “The Barn and The Stable both benefit from a wood burning stove, comfy leather sofas and a large TV.” There’s also parking available for up to three cars and free WIFI. “Our gates open onto a bridle path that leads down to the Staffordshire and Worcestershire canal, with no passing traffic which is great for walkers and cyclists.” Linda and Mick have worked hard to pay attention to those little details that make all the difference; there are flower boxes and planters outside the cottages, as well as a very unique addition in The Barn. “We’ve got a Wurlitzer juke box containing many vinyl records from the 1960’s and 1970’s in The Barn that many of our guests love,” adds Linda. With so much to offer, it’s no surprise that guests at New Wood Farm can’t wait to book their next stay.

Your Health

‘Water Worries’ being slightly diuretic, tea and coffee are both sources of fluid. Your water intake doesn’t have to come from ‘water’. That is, fruit and vegetables, soups, milk and soft drinks all have a high percentage of fluid in them.

MY WATER TASTES LIKE A SWIMMING POOL. Tap water really is

Ask most adults in the UK how much water they should be drinking and you’d be told “eight glasses a day.” But it’s a myth, believed to be a misinterpretation of some advice given in the 1940s. How can it be true when we are all different sizes, some of us are active and some are sedentary, and the weather may be sweltering or freezing? Like sleepiness and hunger pangs, thirst is your body’s way of indicating it needs something and really not something to be afraid of.

IT’S THAT EASY? Yes and no. As we age, the thirst mechanism deteriorates so we

74

can’t rely on that as our only indicator. Furthermore, when you are engrossed in some sedentary activity – watching TV, surfing the net – you may not be conscious that you haven’t had anything to drink for a while.

I NEED A CLUE.

Dizziness or a headache may be a sign, but more reliable is the colour of your urine. If you realise it has been many hours since you last passed water and when you do go your pee is dark yellow, you are dehydrated.

I PREFER A ROUTINE. A good start is to always take a glass of water to bed with you. This is your early morning reminder to start hydrating.

During the rest of the day, if you can barely remember where you put your car keys, keeping track in your head is a strategy designed to fail. As a minimum, a written log by the fridge will help, but using one of the widely available hydration apps is a great discipline and makes it fun too.

fine to drink, but in many hard water areas a slight aroma and taste of chlorine will be enough to put you off, and that in itself will reduce your intake. Of course you can buy it in bottles. Better for the planet and the wallet are water filters and there’s a huge choice and plenty of articles online comparing the options. One innovative idea comes from a Scottish company called Phox (www.phoxwater.com). Their jug features a refillable cartridge that is designed to last the life of the jug, not just thirty days. The water filtration granules expire after forty-five days, when you’ll simply open the filter, clean it out and pour in the new refill pack.

CHEERS! TOP ME UP. Indeed, but a final word of warning. It’s just as important not to overdo it. Over-hydration, known as hyponatremia, can be lethal.

JUST PLAIN WATER THEN? Again, another urban

myth is that only pure water counts and that simply isn’t true. If you don’t feel you are awake until you’ve had your first cuppa that’s not a bad thing. Despite

special ‘me time’ that we looked forward to every week. We didn’t realise how much we value our relationship with our hairdresser - who becomes our friend over time - and how much we miss that salon experience. Our very own sales director, Gisella Wiley, was among the many women – and men – who were ecstatic when the announcement was made that hairdressers were back in business. As she explains: “I’ve been a regular at Royston Blythe for many years now and I visit the salon twice a week. The team do an amazing job on my hair and I walk away from my appointments looking – and feeling – great, so I really missed my visits during those four months. “I’d tried to take care of my hair

Aside from regular blow dry’s with Charles at the salon she also books in for a colour and extensions. “I can’t wait to have my new extensions put in and feel like myself again.” And, Gisella isn’t alone in being super excited for her appointment. “My friend Lindsey text me to say she was dancing around the room when she had the news that she’d also got booked in at Royston Blythe,” adds Gisella.

Royston & Nick bring us all the lockdown gossip

ROYSTON & NICK WITH RUBY (DOG) AND FRANKIE (CAT).

It’s been a strange few months but thankfully things are getting back to normal, and the moment we’ve all been waiting for has arrived: we can finally get our hair done. Whether you’ve been struggling with DIY dye jobs or your locks are looking a little too ‘au natural’ there’s no doubt that you’re excited for a brand-new hair look this summer. And, the award-winning team at Royston Blythe can’t wait to get back to doing what they do best: making their clients look amazing. We caught up with Royston and Nick for a post-lockdown chat to find out the latest salon news, catch-up on all the gossip from the last four months and hear more about the excellent campaign they started to say ‘thank you’ to frontline NHS workers. So, how was lockdown for you guys? Royston: Well, we had a lot of

fun at home and we really enjoyed spending time together. I’ve discovered that I’m a pretty good gardener, I cleaned all the windows and Nick has done housework that he’s never done in his life! We spent a lot of time walking, eating and watching TV and we helped out friends, family and elderly residents in our hamlet who were struggling to get shopping.

2.

3.

To prevent blood from flowing in the wrong direction, veins have valves. If the valves fail, blood flows back down the leg. This results in veins enlarging and becoming varicose. Whilst there are a number of factors that are outside of your control (age, sex and genetics) there are a number of things that you can do to help prevent varicose veins or to minimise the symptoms from them. 1.

Keep active: Regular exercise helps pump blood out of the leg and reduces the congestion in the veins, particularly if your job involves sitting or standing still for long periods.

Lose weight: Excess weight can cause compression of the veins and exacerbate the symptoms of varicose veins. Even small amounts of weight loss can help with symptoms.

Get Moving

for Mental Health Virtual exercise classes Joe Wicks runs weekday PE classes at 9am on his YouTube channel and you don’t need to have children to take part. If the family classes are too energetic, try some of his other workouts, such as the ones aimed at seniors.

During the lockdown, with so little choice of things to do, it may well be that a walk round the block became part of your daily routine.

T

hat should have reminded you of the physical and mental benefits of fresh air and moving around.

But as lockdown eases, if you find you have reverted to form and even the very word ‘exercise’ makes you want to retreat to the sofa to binge watch Netflix, we hear you! It really doesn’t have to be a chore though. Any type of exercise is useful, as long as it suits you and you do enough of it. It should be something you enjoy or it will be hard to find the motivation to do it regularly. As the saying goes: necessity is the mother of invention and the last couple of months have been amazing for introducing exercise that doesn’t involve

www.townandvillagelifemag.co.uk

being in a gym. From martial arts in the garden, online yoga and cycling to just that brisk walk round the block.

Exercise to boost your mood Aerobic exercises, where your heart rate is elevated, have been shown to help depression. They reduce your levels of cortisol (AKA the ‘stress hormone’). You could try jogging (using the Couch to 5K app to keep yourself motivated), a virtual exercise class or just dancing in your kitchen.

Exercise to ease anxiety Yoga and pilates can have a direct impact on your nervous system, helping to calm it down and ease anxiety. Some studies have shown that yoga can also be beneficial for tackling depression, alleviating stress and even reducing pain and blood pressure.

Don’t fancy PE? You’ll find dance, martial arts and more online. The dance troupe Diversity teaches regular classes on www.20dv.co.uk. And you can take part in Oti Mabuse’s free dance classes on her YouTube channel whenever you want.

Exercising with a health condition If you’re worried that exercise might make an existing health condition worse, do speak to your GP. Finally the NHS offers more than 20 instructor-led workouts at www.nhs.uk/conditions/nhsfitness-studio, starting from just 10 minutes long. There’s even a 30 minute workout using your sofa!

Keep motivated Make a note of how you feel before and after your workout. Try rating your anxiety and mood out of 10 and see whether the workout has had a positive effect.

Exercise in nature According to a study by the University of Exeter, spending two hours a week in nature is good for both your mental and physical wellbeing. This could mean your local park, a field or even doing an outdoor circuits session in your garden. 99

The GOLF CLUB you need to join… Why should you Join South Staffs Golf Club?

C

lub manager, Sue LeBeau explains: “We have restructured our fees and offer great value for money to our members at £1175 per year for full membership with no joining fee. With the option to pay monthly at no extra cost that is less than £98 per month! “We pride ourselves on being Wolverhampton’s premier golf club with an outstanding course which has been maintained to the highest standard even through lockdown. “A warm and friendly welcome awaits you – even in lockdown our Captain has been calling all new members to welcome them into the club. “We started getting a steady number of enquires and new members over the winter when traditionally that is the slowest time for new joiners. Why? Because our course was able to remain open during the very wet period we had when most other courses were closed. Visitors were so impressed they came and joined us. We really do offer year-round golf on main greens and have a limited number of memberships still available. “Full membership not required? – take a look at our flexible membership options – we are confident we can find something that works for you including our very popular House/Playing category.

Our clubhouse is being refurbished! “During lockdown we have been progressive and taken advantage of the closure of the clubhouse to undertake a refurbishment project. Our new spike bar and associated areas will give us a lovely open space for members to enjoy with 108

the flexibility of separating some of the areas off for private hire rooms for our visitors and corporate members. These areas will complement our dining room refurbishment undertaken a while ago and means we can offer a variety of flexible options for private functions. “We are now taking provisional bookings for winter functions as well as for 2021 – so whether you are looking for a select wedding reception venue, a private party or celebration meal, a birthday afternoon tea or looking to book your Christmas event early – please consider our lovely venue. “Additionally, any SME looking for Corporate facilities albeit meetings, luncheons or dinner, or golf days – why not consider South Staffs Golf Club, we would be happy to show you around and work to give you a great experience”.

NEWSFLASH – we will be opening our dining room as “The Danescourt Restaurant” this winter on Friday and Saturday nights. Members of the public will be able to reserve tables to come and enjoy our fabulous facilities and food.

Golf just at the Gets better With longer days and the promise of sunshine, why not join probably the most improved club and the best value golf membership in the area. Wergs Golf Club offers a superb 18-hole, 6644 -yard course in a glorious rural setting, with 14 water hazards, 52 bunkers and 11 holes with out of bounds. A very good test of golf. Giving good value for money is undoubtedly key to the continued success of the club. In conjunction with this there has been significant investment in the course, while in lockdown we have removed approximately 100 overgrown conifer trees which were overpowering the course, rebuilt two greens to USGA specifications, built 3 new tees and laid over 800 yards of drainage pipe, so we have been busy. Welcoming visitors and corporate groups, the club’s popularity is certainly growing, make sure you don’t miss out on the great facilities available.

• New corporate memberships are currently on offer all for an annual cost of £500 +VAT. This includes: • A free advertising panel on one of the tees • Two four ball every month • Use of the sports lounge for meetings with free WI-FI • Reduced rates on corporate golf days The club itself provides a variety of new features including a new covered 8 bay driving range with 50 balls costing just £3.00. The golf driving range is open 7 days per week and gives golfers of all abilities a great place to practise and improve their game at any time of the year. Alternatively, you may like to chat with our resident PGA professional Shaun Ball. With over 30 years’ experience, Shaun has the knowledge to give practical tips focussing on specific areas to improve your game. You can choose to play the full ‘championship competition course’ off the white tees, the ‘general play course’ off the yellow tees or the ‘short course’ off the red tees, all of which provide their own unique characteristics and challenges.

Wergs have some current special offers:- The 5-year deal giving new members 3 years at normal priced subs and years 4 and 5 at half price. We are also giving new members who join in groups of 4 or more, 25% discount on their first year subscription. Check this on our brand-new website at www.wergsgolfclub.com But it’s not just about golf at Wergs! Our Sports Lounge has three large screen TV’s with Sky Sports so you won’t miss any major sporting events. While you’re watching why not enjoy our range of lite bites, breakfast or lunch before and after your round washed down with a pint of real ale in a great atmosphere surrounded by interesting sporting memorabilia. Wergs Golf Club is the ideal setting for special functions. Whether you’re planning a Wedding, Birthday party, Anniversary, or Remembrance ceremony, Wergs will work closely with you to ensure you get exactly the right ambience for your event. Their Events Team are passionate and creative, with a wealth of local knowledge to help tailor your perfect day or evening.

BACK

to Nature Keeping kids entertained is difficult at the best of times. But having already endured weeks in lockdown and a return to complete freedom looking to be some way off, it’s a challenge to keep your little ones occupied and to tear older children away from a screen. These ideas might help though!

Take the indoors out What does your child enjoy doing that could be done outdoors? Could you make cookie dough at the garden table rather than the kitchen table? Is there any reason a board game can’t be played on a picnic rug? Could you set crafts up on a plastic sheet? (On the plus side, it saves your carpet getting covered in paint, glitter and chocolate.)

By Kate Duggan

Play to their interests Younger children often like ticking off a list of things to spot when they’re out, or collecting petals, leaves and pebbles for a craft activity. If your child is an animal lover, could you go on a bug hunt? If they enjoy solving puzzles, could you go geocaching or set up a treasure hunt? Active kids might enjoy a simple obstacle course in the garden or throwing balls to knock down tin cans.

Shake things up Most of us like a bit of variety in life. Even moving a swing to a different part of the garden or trying some different games can help to reignite a child’s interest. On a more practical level, a reorganisation of their bedroom or a shared space can be exciting for them.

Play games My eight-year-old loathes going for a walk. With a passion. And he doesn’t hesitate to let us know just how boring he finds it. So our family walks tend to be less about

walking and more about playing games on the move. His favourite is a game where we adults challenge the kids to impersonate an animal. When he was younger, it was a case of “Can you hop like a kangaroo?” “Can you slither like a snake?” Now it’s evolved into “Can you charge like a short-sighted rhino?” “Can you soar like an eagle with a broken wing?” We also play hide and seek and other games.

Build it into a routine If you have the option, it might be worth setting a family rule that you all have to spend a certain amount of time outside every day, even if it’s just bouncing round the garden.

Don’t be afraid of bribery I’m not suggesting you pay your child to get active, but there’s nothing wrong with promising an ice lolly or half an hour of screen time after a bike ride now and then.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class Saloon

By Rob Taylor The Mercedes-Benz A-Class Hatchback never looked quite “right” to my eye. It was handsome, in a brutish way, and it was certainly striking but with an elongated front end and sawed-off rear it seemed squat and bulbous. A Benz ought to be elegant, full of swooping lines and curvaceous bumps and I always felt the Hatch locked away a lot of untapped visual beauty. Turns out, Mercedes has been listening. OK, – scratch that slither of ego – Mercedes hasn’t, but happenstance has it that now the German leviathan has given us just what I’ve been asking for: the A-Class Saloon. It looks just as I hoped it would, with short front and rear overhangs and has the proportions of a dynamic and compact saloon car. Further expanding an already best-selling A-Class range (despite what I think it looks like; the UK bought plenty, six million A-Class models have been sold since 1997), it showcases the latest in-car technology and it’s available in a choice of two trim lines: Sport and AMG Line. The Saloon isn’t available in entry-level SE spec and this may have to do with the labyrinthine roster of cars

114

manufacturers keep these days. Push price-points only slightly and you almost negate the existence of another model. It’s definitely positioned too closely to the coupestyled four-door CLA in my book. Like the hatchback, every model comes packed with a high specification as standard: Sport model features twin seven-inch displays including a central touchscreen with MBUX multimedia system with ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice activation; comfort suspension; DAB radio; 17” alloy wheels; automatic twozone climate control; Active Lane Keeping Assist; Speed Limit Assist; and Keyless-Go starting function. AMG Line customers get 18” AMG alloy wheels and vaguely more aggressive AMG body-styling. Compact executive cars continue to sell in strong numbers and so will this I’m sure. A sevenspeed automatic gearbox comes as standard and when you’re wafting around in this level of sedate luxury, you certainly won’t want a manual. This 1.5-litre 180d diesel (yes, of course you can have a petrol) engine produces 116 bhp and 260 Nm of torque and promises a range of up to 68.9 mpg on the combined cycle. Despite emitting just 110 g/km of CO2, it

has a top speed of 125 mph, and can do 0 to 60 mph in 10.5 seconds. Of course, there are a number of option packages available. The Executive equipment package costs £1,395 (which isn’t too much when tacked onto a vehicle which starts at around £28,000) and upgrades the central touchscreen media display to 10”, as well as adding Active Parking Assist with Parktronic and heated front seats. The Advanced Navigation package introduces augmented reality into the onboard satellite navigation. Using a camera located at the top of the windscreen, the infotainment screen overlays the navigation display with the actual road ahead, making for clearer guidance. The A-Class Saloon offers, unsurprisingly, a lot of practicality over its hatchback sibling. The boot holds 420 litres and allows for comfortable loading and unloading. The interior offers a real feeling of spaciousness, helped by the wing-shaped main body of the dashboard, which extends, uninterrupted, from door to door. Sit inside and you’ll feel like you’ve made it. Thank goodness Mercedes decided to make it.
