Joy: Is it always at night? NB: Actually some clients (just under 27%) clench during the day, while driving or on their computers. Joy: So what can we do to prevent it? NB: Well the first issue is identifying the problem and allowing our clients to talk about the stresses that lead them to us. The next bit is more complex; some of our clients have had mouth guards made which protect the teeth, but research shows us that while these may help the teeth, they can actually increase the muscular activity making pain and tension worse. So we use a combination of treatments bespoke to our clients’ needs that usually involves an NTI device (a small clip-on device clinically proven to reduce muscular activity).
Joy: What have you noticed? NB: Well bruxism or tooth grinding is something we’re dealing with a lot more these days, and it’s becoming an increasing problem.
Or if our client is clenching in the day we use custom-made invisible comfortable earplugs that ease the symptoms along with medicinal Botox and sometimes acupuncture. The Botox can also reduce one of the other symptoms which is enlarged masseter muscles.
Joy: What kind of symptoms are your clients experiencing? NB: Symptoms vary from client to client. Headaches are common, as is neck stiffness, clicky jaw joints or lock jaw and migraines happen a lot too. Joy: What’s happening? NB: Well in order to answer that we need to understand how the brain works. Our brains are pretty amazing, they can cope with most things we throw at them. But really, what they were designed for was to wake up at sunrise and shut down slowly over sunset, but now the world is very different. When we go to bed our brains haven’t had time to shut down and relax, so our bodies sleep but our brains are still active and thus our brain is still full of electrical activity which leaks into the nearest muscles it can find; neck muscles, forehead and jaw muscles. The muscles either clench hard or they relax and clench leading to the grinding or bruxism. Joy: So what’s causing it? NB: In a word, stress and exposure to blue light from screens (like mobile devices and televisions) fool our bodies into thinking it is bright sunshine, thus not giving our brain down time to process them before we pass out in bed. Sometimes our brains have so much going on, we wake up multiple times in the night. Joy: Who is most effected? NB: We find clients who come to see us fit into two main categories, by far the most common is the more caring clients such as teachers, nurses and home carers and full time mothers. These lovely individuals have a hard time saying no to people, so they have a lot on. The other type of client are usually fairly high flying business owners or company directors taking on more and more, usually answering emails or calls into the evenings. The grinding and pain is usually a medium to late warning sign that serious problems are not far away.
Joy: Does it work? NB: Our clients tell us the results are life changing. Some of our clients have been suffering with crippling headaches and migraines for years. Most of them have posted videos on our website and Facebook page or given us written testimonials.
Joy: How would I arrange a consultation? NB: Our highly trained reception team are on hand on the telephone OR on instant messaging at www.willowsdental.co.uk and email. We’re open over lunch and have late appointments till 8pm available and our full comprehensive consultations are only £40.

FROM THE EDITOR There’s lots we love about Christmas at Town & Village Life. Mince pies, mulled wine; sleepy afternoons spent watching It’s a Wonderful Life, extra time with family and friends and, yes, the presents (including the novelty socks!) are all pretty great reasons to love the festive season. In fact, at a push, I’d say that Christmas is my favourite time of the year. Panto season is here: win tickets to see Dick Whittington at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre. Also up for grabs is a chance to win six bottles of award-winning wine from Halfpenny Green Wine Estate.
As for gifts, we’ve got it all wrapped up, we have where’s best to buy jewellery (Rudells the jeweller), beauty gift ideas from Heaven and Wollaston Beauty Clinic and where to get your hair done for that special night out (celebrity hairdressers Royston Blythe). Check out some quirky alternatives to the High Street at Country Baskets and Stourbridge Galleries, and if you’re looking for that special Christmas tree look no further than Highgate Farm or Lealans. This edition is such a page-turner that even men who traditionally wander, lost and overwhelmed, in search of present-inspiration can find refuge
here. Ok, Ok, so we admit we’ve had help: our fantastic advertisers can take credit for much of the plethora or purchase you’re about to see inside: we thank them all. All the usual suspects are inside too, eating out, home interiors, a multitude of Beauty, Health and Fashion, Lancaster Jaguar Land Rover, how to spruce up your home, as well as vast reserves of products and services for your home.

Three Pines are delighted to have been awarded the contract to revamp the former Bond Street Tavern, in Bond Street.
The bar is currently closed but has now been taken over by investor First Orchard Ltd, which has a new premises license and will be relaunching under the name Cosmo Bonsor in a £500,000 revamp. In a written submission to the city council’s Statutory Licensing Sub-Committee, spokesman Jason Pitt said: “Our intention is to create a new premium offer hospitality venue. “We intend to refurbish, re-brand and relaunch the premises under this new name, with a view to recreating the Edwardian elegance of yesteryear combined with splashes of Art Nouveau splendor. “Customers will also be able to enjoy simple but nutritious food and drink offers available from late morning onwards.” “Upstairs, the plan is to convert the existing residential space into four ‘Airbnb-style’ rooms to let on a short-term basis. We see this development as a quality addition to a historical part of Wolverhampton.” The new license application also relates to the playing of recorded music, late night refreshments and the sale of alcohol on and off the premises.
Neil Lerigo Three Pines Director has commented “What a project to be awarded! Working with Jason from First Orchard and Patrick from Avalon Design to produce a very impressive and innovative new venue in the heart of Wolverhampton. It won’t come without its difficulties but we cannot wait for opening night” For further updates on this project please follow us on Facebook and twitter

Weeping Bank Productions
continues to terrify audiences For the last three years one theatre company has remained synonymous with horror in the West Midlands.
his second short film ‘The Folly’ under the Weeping Bank banner. “My first film, ‘End of the Road’ was premiered in 2017 and ‘The Folly’ has been a labour of love over the last two years. We hope to bring this chilling tale to audiences this winter.”
Weeping Bank Productions has been packing theatres in London, Birmingham and beyond with its original adaptations of A G Smith’s ghost stories. The shows have drawn five-star reviews in the press and praise from the likes of bestselling fantasy author Robin Jarvis and Man Booker author Stephen Kelman as well as legendary Led Zeppelin vocalist Robert Plant.
comedy sketches and plays. He will be giving a series of readings of his work in libraries throughout the Black Country this autumn and has just launched a comedy channel on YouTube with his creative partner Rob Whitehouse.
Weeping Bank Productions will also be hosting a horror short-film festival in the Black Country which is open to all. ‘Each film entered needs to exceed no more than five minutes and we are hoping to have a very special guest who will judge these films and select the winning entries. These will then be given a big screen premiere in Kinver on the 25th January.’
“Rob and I met at Dudley College in 1993 and we began writing and performing sketches whilst we should have been studying for our A’ Levels! This partnership continued for many years until a ten-year hiatus whilst we both concentrated on other projects. It’s a joy to be back writing and performing comedy with Rob again and we are very proud to be launching BTV.2.”
Alan Birch, who is familiar to audiences for his portrayal of ‘Inspector Drake’ as well as extensive theatre work, plays ‘The Librarian’ in the stage shows. He was eager to discuss the exciting plans that the company has for the upcoming season. “The audience response to the first two stage shows (An Evening of Delectable Terror and The Walpurgisnacht Hauntings) was overwhelming. We sold out theatres for consecutive nights and had incredible people come and see us like Robert Plant and representatives from both the BBFC & BFI. The shows have evolved over time, incorporating projection screens and special audio and visual effects which have had audiences jumping out of their seats in fright. We will be touring the two original shows again to try and bring that theatrical experience to community halls and other venues in the local area. This will be a prelude to the release of a new play in the autumn of 2020 called The Curse of Seagrave Oratory. This will be a full-cast theatre production.” Refusing to rest on its laurels, Weeping Bank Productions will also premiere a brand-new set of stories at Bodenham Arboretum this autumn. “We are doing a special one-off performance of five new stories at Bodenham this year which will take the form of a ghost walk around this incredibly evocative setting.” On top of this Alan Birch has written, produced and directed 10

A bespoke shower and luxurious bath make this family bathroom perfect Making the most of available space to create a bathroom that has room for everything can be a challenge, as was the case for Stan and Dawn from Seisdon. With several en-suites in their home they wanted a family bathroom with space for both a shower and a bath. “We knew that space was limited so we were happy for Caroline to put forward her ideas,” says Dawn. “Our neighbours had recommended Roman Bathrooms so we did not even visit the showroom, we were happy for Caroline to visit our home and prepare a design and a quote. We then went to the showroom to talk through the proposals and have a look at the displays which helped us refine the design.”
Although space was limited Roman Bathrooms were able to provide everything that Dawn and Stan wanted, a bath, spacious walk-in shower, vanity unit with a surface-mounted basin and WC. The bespoke shower is built into the back wall, next to the bath, which provides a generous area for showering. Recessed shelving in the shower and above the bath provides a neat solution for displaying everyday items. Low level lighting in the plinth of the wet deck and two generously sized mirrors keep the room bright and make it feel more spacious. “We both love the new bathroom”, says Dawn, “I really appreciate having the luxury of a bath. The room is fully tiled so it looks luxurious and is very easy to clean. The fitted furniture keeps all the clutter out of sight, which also keeps it looking good. “The whole process was made easy with Caroline’s design expertise and the fitters that installed the bathroom were neat and tidy. “We are very happy and would definitely recommend Roman Bathrooms to others.”

Doing good with waste wood ASAN Wood Saints is a social enterprise working to benefit community and environment, transforming waste into shared assets through our inclusive volunteering program. Our operation self-finances by providing a competitive wood waste collection service, timber yard for trade and public, and a wood workshop. We provide an environmentally friendly alternative to Skip Hire for producers of wood waste across the Black Country and parts of both Staffordshire and Shropshire. Working from our base at The Wood Depot on Dixon Street in Wolverhampton, we are committed to reducing disposal costs, reducing waste going to landfill and to creating jobs for local people. No matter what the situation, we aim to offer a sustainable solution. It has now been over 18 months since the launch of Wood Saints and during that time the team of dedicated staff and volunteers
have all helped Wood Saints get to where it is now. We have expanded the wood yard to cater for the higher influx of timber from our collections. We are currently upgrading our welfare facilities on site and have a number of new initiatives and improvements in the pipeline. In addition to our normal activities, we also run woodwork clubs on a Thursday evening and Saturday mornings, where people can learn traditional woodworking skills before moving on to develop their own projects.
Wood Saints offers a fantastic opportunity to get involved in a local enterprise. We welcome volunteers from all walks of life, and aim to provide jobs, training and volunteering opportunities for local people - especially for those who might be marginalised from the job market or suffer other forms of social exclusion. Whether you have a lifetime of previous work-based wood skills or no prior experience, if you want to help and learn new skills we are confident we can find you something to do!

Think carefully and Take advice before accessing your pension
I have had a client approach me for advice on transferring his preserved final salary pension benefits. This is the third time he has been to see me to access his pension and his story still gives me a shudder whenever I recall our initial conversation. In early 2016 Gary called me to say that he had a preserved pension for which he had received a cash equivalent transfer value (CETV) of £87,937 and asked if I would facilitate a transfer so that he could cash in his pension to use towards a property purchase. I asked him if he was still working and he told me that yes he worked at JLR and he was a higher rate taxpayer. At this point I told him that firstly the scheme (which I was quite familiar with) were not 18
offering anything like true value for transfers and secondly as a higher rate tax payer he would pay 40% tax on 75% of the value. He then went on to tell me that he was fully aware of the tax payable as he had recently encashed his money purchase pension which had a value in excess of £100,000 and he had paid £36,000 in tax. He had used the proceeds to purchase a flat that he now rents giving a monthly income of £400 and believed that financially this was the right thing for him to do. Basically what he had done was turn a pension fund of £120,000 into a £88,000 flat with rental income. He made this decision without taking financial advice as he did not want to incur any costs and the only reason he was calling me now was because he had no option but to involve a financial adviser to facilitate his transfer.
Sadly I was too late to stop him making that mistake and although he was adamant at the time that he wanted to transfer his preserved pension, eventually I managed to convince him otherwise. He called me again early in 2018 to see if it was wise to transfer and again I convinced him otherwise. This brings us forward to 2019 when he has just received his latest CETV and the scheme Trustees have obviously changed their stance and are looking to encourage members to transfer as the figure he has been quoted is now in excess of £220,000 over 2.5 times the initial amount. The first thing Gary said to me was “you were right John not to let me transfer in 2016, now the amount being offered has increased greatly I want to transfer and cash it in”. It doesn’t bear thinking about the amount of tax he would pay if he did actually follow
town & village life magazine | november/december 2019
through with that idea however thankfully he now listens to me and will follow my advice. The changes in pension legislation in April 2015 whilst in my opinion were great for many individuals, they have resulted in consumers paying way too much tax in accessing money they did not need or where there were better alternatives. To give you an idea, savers withdrew a record £8.18bn from their pension pots in 2017-18, up by more than £1.5bn on the previous year according to figures from HM Revenue & Customs.
accessing their pensions and in turn rewarding the Treasury my message is this - before you decide to withdraw funds please meet with a financial adviser before it’s too late. In Gary’s case I cannot get back the £36,000 tax he has already paid although I can protect him going forward. The motto of the story is take advice before making any financial decisions regarding your pension.
In total, savers have withdrawn £25.6bn since the start of pension freedoms in April 2015. This can leave consumers exposed to a new set of risks including paying too much tax than what is necessary on withdrawals, or leaving the money languishing in low or near zero paying deposit accounts. The freedoms marked a radical change in the retirement landscape which is now almost unrecognisable from where it was before inception in 2015. Individuals now have much more control over their pension savings including allowing those looking for a more gradual transition into retirement the chance to work, combining reduced hours with part pension as they approach or move beyond traditional retirement age. We have a fantastic selection of Karndean, Amtico, Furlong, Quick-Step and V4 Wood flooring to choose from, as well as carpet ranges from leading manufacturers like, Axminster, Brintons, Greendale and Adams Carpets.” In fact, the family-run company has an impressive dedicated Karndean showroom: “We’re a Platinum retailer for Karndean and our extensive recently refurbished showroom is second in size only to Karndean’s itself.”
All of the company’s products are extremely competitively priced, as the business works closely with the Greendale Group, which is the largest carpet and flooring buying company in the UK. “Being a member of Greendale means that we can offer a huge range of products, but still compete in terms of price too, passing the savings on to the customer.” And there are always bargains to be had: “We have a lot of end-of-roll stock available all the time, so there are plenty of exciting prices to be found in store.”
24
And, there’s something to suit every home décor at the showroom: “We cater for all styles and tastes - we have very traditional designs, as well as the most up-to-date and fashionable ranges.” There’s also an impressive selection of rugs to choose from too. “Rugs instantly give the home a really cosy and comfortable feel and can complete the look of your room perfectly.”
Earning an excellent reputation in the industry – and celebrating 43 years in business this year – N.D. Walters has become the premier choice for homeowners and commercial clients alike, who are looking for superior products and service. “We’ve got years of experience in the trade, as well as an expertly trained team, so we can offer our customers plenty of advice. We also have our very own team of expert fitters who take care of installation.”
The company also offer free home consultations and come highly recommended by the Carpet Foundation an independent organisation who monitor and check on carpet retailers to ensure standards of quality and service. “We carry out a lot of insurance work across the entire West Midlands region and complete jobs for many different organisations – and completed a project at Himley Hall.” And N.D. Walters has also been featured on both DIY SOS and Cowboy Builders where they helped out two families by supplying the flooring that made their home transformation complete.
So, if you haven’t visited before, be sure to make a trip to N.D. Walters before you begin any home improvements this autumn - it’ll be well worth your while.

RECIPE Mini Panettone Preparation time: 45 minutes (allow 4-5 hours for proving time) Cooking time: 20 minutes Makes: 6 Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • •
26
250g good quality plain flour 1 tsp dried yeast Pinch of salt 100ml whole milk, warmed (not hot) 3 eggs (Two beaten together, 1 extra) 1 tsp vanilla extract 50g golden caster sugar, plus extra for dusting 100g softened butter Zest and juice of one orange 100g raisins 100g sultanas 100g mixed peel (for non-peel-lovers you can substitute cranberries)
Method 1. Soak the fruit overnight in the orange juice. 2. Mix the flour and salt, the yeast and the milk in a mixer with a dough hook. You can do it by hand, it just takes longer. Gradually mix in two beaten eggs and the vanilla. Knead until the dough is smooth and springy. Leave in a bowl, covered with a damp cloth and allow to rise until doubled in size. 3. Add the sugar, butter and the yolk from the remaining egg. Mix again, either with the machine, or by hand, until the dough is smooth again. Add the fruit and zest and knead quickly until it’s all incorporated into the dough. Leave in a bowl, covered with a damp cloth, in a cool place for at least two hours until doubled
in size again. You can leave it in the fridge overnight if you prefer. 4. Line a large, six-holed muffin tray with paper cases. Divide the dough into six portions and roll into balls. Place one ball into each muffin case, cover with a damp cloth and leave for 20 minutes. 5. Heat the oven to 180C / 160 fan or Gas mark 4. Brush the tops of the panettones with the remaining egg whites and dust with caster sugar. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the muffins have risen and are golden in colour. Leave to cool on a wire rack. Variation - Add some brandy to the overnight soak in orange juice for a little extra kick.

For Willows Dental
As part of Willows Dental sponsorship program, they were approached by Louie to raise awareness and funds for White Collar Boxing. This originated in New York, USA in 1988 when a Doctor and an Attorney trained before boxing each other at a black tie event. Since then, White Collar Boxing has been the fastest growing corporate contact sport in the world.
them techniques they will need for their fight. These training regimes will ensure that the boxers are in the fittest condition of their life and will leave them feeling great! At the end of the 8 weeks training, everyone will be fairly matched based on weight, fitness, ability and age with an opponent from the group they have trained with to ensure a fair, competitive bout. All boxers that take part in the events are encouraged to raise money for Cancer Research UK by selling event tickets, having a JustGiving page and/or by gaining sponsers. Neel, Vicki and the whole team at Willows Dental and Implant Centre are very proud to be supporting one of our clients, Louie, who took part in his first Ultra
White Collar Boxing event in July 2019. After just 8 weeks of training, Louie stepped into the boxing ring to fight for 3 x 2 minute rounds, and we are thrilled to announce than Louie won his fight at the end of the first round by knock out! “Everyone at Cancer Research UK appreciates the amazing support the UWCB team provide us. Every person that has taken part and raised money has made a huge difference. Raising over £10 Million is a fantastic achievement and one that will help save lives, and beat cancer sooner. UWCB are an incredibly valued supporter of the charity and we are extremely grateful to the team and all the boxers involved.” – Cancer Research UK Louie is now in training for his second fight, taking part in November 2019, where Neel, Vicki and the Willows team will again be sponsoring Louie, and supporting him through his training and spurring him on at the ring side.
Ultra White Collar Boxing is one of the most established organisations in the UK, running over 1,000 events around the UK since 2009. Ultra White Collar Boxing raises money for charity, has won awards and is more conscientious about health and saftey than any other organisation. The Ultra White Collar Boxing are one of the UK’s biggest fundraisers for Cancer Research UK, raising over £10 million in the last 10 years. holiday themed products add some modern, yet festive touches into your home. Whilst we all love our tacky and traditional decorations, that we use every single year; they’re a thing of the past now. The most amazing feature of these charming lights though, is not only are they modern and stylish, but a lot of them are battery operated. Finally, a way to display dazzling Christmas lights without the hassle of wires, after wires and even more wires. Moreover, the mains operated items are all LED! Our personal favourites from the collection are the LED baubles, coming in various sizes. Teaming the two up together, can create a dazzling display anywhere. Another favourite, that we simply love, are the colour-changing penguins.

2019 is flying by and the suitcases have just been prised back through that small hatch into the dark, dingy loft.
you’ve got to get back down and there’s that awful feeling as your legs dangle through the hatch, past the point of no return, adrenaline pumping and sweaty palms as you try to find the ladder with your toes. It doesn’t have to be this way.
We at Revealaspace get lots of calls from customers because they’ve decided their gymnast days are over or worse, they’re bruised from tumbling off a poorly balanced step ladder. We specialise in the lowest cost way of giving you up to 30% more space in your home by fitting a loft ladder and transforming your loft into a well-lit, easily accessible and boarded storage space. Give us a call today for a free quote.
It will soon be time for that conversation again. Whose turn is it to get up there and retrieve the Christmas decorations? The tradition of risking your neck: hoisting yourself like a gymnast on parallel bars, tightrope walking across the beams and the voice below encouraging you not to put your foot through the ceiling! Whatever you’re looking for in the dingy torchlight will be at the back or buried beneath a dirty dusty pile. Then, once you’ve found it,

Black Country Firewood
O P E N D AY Black Country Firewood hosted their Annual open day at the beginning of October.
The rain stayed away and over 250 new and existing customers visited the farm in Bobbington to learn about the different types of firewood on offer. Those visiting were also able to view the latest range of wood burning stoves available from Flaming Fires, Wombourne, meet their local chimney sweep, and take advantage of the complimentary bar and wood-fired pizzas. Mike, Richard and the team would like to thank all those that made the day possible and all of the customers that showed a keen interest in what we do.

Dudley South Ladies Luncheon Club Chairman Ann Rogers was very pleased to welcome 40 ladies, including 3 visitors, to enjoy a 3-course lunch at The Lodge, Wellington Road, Dudley and to hear speaker Mr. John Pittwood’s talk entitled “Possibly the best thing to come out of a pub”. John illustrated his talk with slides showing the history of the RNLI from 1824 to the present day, beginning with wooden rowing boats launched by women in long flowing skirts, to the latest £2 ½ million super lifeboats propelled by water jets. As only 1 in 10 now are professional seamen, every crew member has to undergo intensive training every year. In 1891 the idea of raising funds started in Manchester when the first street collection raised £5,000, equivalent to £1million today. It was fascinating following the journey from an idea first discussed in a pub in 1785 to the RNLI today which is acknowledged as the very best in

FEELING FRAZZLED
IN THE RUN UP TO THE FESTIVE SEASON? Here’s the Blacks Vets guide to keeping you and your pets relaxed during the busiest time of year.
Author: Dr Brian Hogan MVB Cert SAS MRCVS, Director, Blacks Vets November and December can be the most chaotic months of the year as we try to cram in bonfire parties, Christmas shopping, school plays and tree decorating. It can be a really stressful time of year for our pets too with changes to routine, extra visitors and the sights, sounds and smells that come with the festive season. Luckily, we’re here with some top tips for keeping your pets calm and you one step ahead with their care. After all, happy pets make for happy owners!
Firework Phobia Let’s start with an obvious one; the dreaded firework season. For many pets this is a truly traumatic time which makes for a horrible experience for pet owners too. As the period can last from Halloween to New Year, it can also be a time of sustained stress over a number of months. A study published in 2015 conducted by a Norwegian research team found that the sound of fireworks produced more stress reactions in dogs than either the sound of thunderstorms or gunshots! With around 40% of dogs thought to be affected, it is good to know that there are things you can do to help soothe your pet. Allowing your dog to become accustomed to 48
the noise in a controlled environment can be very helpful in reducing the instinctive fear reaction they have. Play a recording of fireworks at very low volume when the house is calm and you are doing something that your pet likes, such as playing or feeding. Each day, play the recording for a little longer and a little louder so that their tolerance to the sound builds. If they start to become scared, stop immediately. Reintroduce the recording the following day at a lower volume and gradually work your way up over the course of several days. You can also make sure your dog has safe place to retreat to. This may mean repositioning his bed in a cosy corner or draping his crate with a blanket to provide shelter. Soft, soothing music and lots of contact and cuddles will also help your pet to feel calm and reassured. It can also be worth trying a calming spray such as Pet Remedy or Feliway (for cats) which is available from your vets as a spray for bedding or as a plug diffuser for rooms. Finally, if all else fails and your pet’s anxiety is very severe, then medication may prove extremely helpful in supporting them through the period.
Cat Friendly Clinics During the bustle of the last few months of the year, it can be difficult to remember everything that we need to keep on top of. Luckily, routine preventative health care for your pet, need not be an issue! Members of our popular Protect My Pet Club benefit from essential treatments such as flea and worming medication and annual boosters, which are scheduled well in advance so that you need never miss an important dose. We also send handy text reminders for administering home treatments and for appointments, taking the stress away from
trying to remember everything. However, for many cat owners, bringing your pet to the vets can still be an extremely daunting experience for both pet and owner alike. Fortunately, Blacks has a solution that greatly reduces unnecessary stress. Our accredited ISFM Cat Friendly Clinics at Lye and Sedgley are equipped to make visits to the vet an altogether more pleasant experience. Cats benefit from their own separate waiting area, away from dogs, and our vets are all trained in best practice for treating and handling cats. Our CFC branches use Feliway spray in the consulting rooms to provide a calm atmosphere and we use specially designed equipment for all feline procedures. We have dedicated cat wards for pets that are admitted and each bed is positioned not to face other cats, preventing territorial anxiety. But perhaps best of all, our CFC clinics have amazing staff who can offer pet owners a wealth of advice on everything from preparing your cat for a visit, to transporting your pet and after-care once home. You can find more details about our Lye and Sedgley CFC Clinics by visiting www.blacksvets.co.uk and more details about the CFC scheme by visiting www.catfriendlyclinic.org.

Christmas Capers So, hands up if your Christmas plans involve travel? Or guests coming to stay? For many of us Christmas is all about people, whether it’s catching up with old friends or piling everyone into the car to stay with family. For some of us, it may even involve a trip abroad. One thing you can be sure of is that Christmas generally
brings lots of change to our usual routines. For pets, this can be a very confusing and ultimately, anxious time. Creatures of habit, most pets like predictability and familiarity; to be fed at the same time every day and walked by their usual human on their usual route. Where you can, try to stick to as many of these regular activities as possible to help your pet feel calm. If you have a full house or

Prepare the garden
for winter
Tips are provided by Ann Winwood, Lealans Garden Centre, Wolverhampton
While it’s mild and there’s no frost in the ground plant bare root hedging and fruit trees. For some winter colour in the garden use shrubs such as Viburnum fragrans or Bodnantense Dawn, Skimmias, Gaultherias or Leucothoe. There is a wide choice of smaller shrubs available which can be planted into baskets and pots for colour during the winter and then transferred into the garden in the spring when you replant for summer. Continue planting pansies, wallflowers and winter bedding, the sooner it’s done now the better. If we do get a sharp frost winter pansy flowers will droop down but once they thaw out in the sun they pop back up giving colour even on a cold day. November is the ideal month for planting tulip bulbs. As the end of November approaches, many people start to purchase Christmas house plants. One of the best Christmas plants is the Poinsettia. It gives instant colour in a room. They like good light during the day and a warm room, never in a draught. Only water when the soil
56
is dry and never stand in water for longer than 10 minutes. In a cooler room the brightly coloured cyclamen is ideal. They need good light at all times. Only water just as the foliage begins to wilt and make sure that any excess water is removed from saucers after 15 minutes. Also consider the Christmas Cherry with its shiny red-orange berries, Christmas cacti with its beautiful shrimp like red, pink, white or lavender flowers. Azaleas will flourish in either a warm or cool room and are very easy to keep, requiring plenty of water. Cacti and succulents have seen a resurgence this year and are ideal presents for encouraging the younger generation into gardening. Along with many garden centres we offer Planted Arrangements
in baskets, which along with the colourful houseplants can be gift wrapped, making them an ideal present. For a living gift consider buying a shrub for the garden or a planted-up tub or hanging basket specifically designed for winter colour. From the end of November, freshly cut Christmas trees will be available in centres. When you get your tree home, put it in a stand or pot that can be kept moist, as warm temperatures and dry air inside the home make the tree absorb water very rapidly. Keep away from hot radiators, open fires and TV sets. This also applies to rooted trees, especially if you’re planning on planting it in the garden after Christmas.

aces Quarter of a century Tettenhall Tigers Volleyball Club has celebrated its 25th anniversary in style, with its annual presentation ceremony seeing players, friends and supporters recognised, as well as special thanks given to Paycare, which has provided financial support to the club over the last two years. Nick Shaffery, Coach at Tettenhall Tigers Volleyball Club, explained: “We’re so thankful to have been able to celebrate such a big anniversary and to host it in the hall of King’s School in Wolverhampton, which is where the club was founded all those years ago. “Volleyball still struggles on a national level with funding and awareness, and so we wanted to mark the occasion and to share thanks to all who continue to support us. “Over the last couple of years, Paycare’s support has helped us buy new equipment, cover facility hire, kits, and general running costs of the club. Light up a Life 2019
Your special opportunity to remember your loved one this Christmas time. By making your personal dedication and donation, a light will shine bright for someone you hold dear. We believe that life with an incurable illness doesn’t mean the festivities have to stop. Your
compassion in donating will ensure that local people and their families get the support and care that they need to enjoy the best Christmas possible. Denise Clemson’s husband David was cared for by our team of doctors and nurses in 2015. Here Denise explains why she makes her dedication and donation each and every year. ‘David and I were married for 22 very happy years. He loved Christmas and always wanted to make it larger than life. In 2015 David was taken ill and was looked after by the team at Compton Care. In his final days, Dave was able to come home where the nurses visited us. The care was second to none.

Together we laugh. We cry. We keep their memory alive. Choose to attend at 15:30 or 17:30 at Compton Hall, 4 Compton Road West, Wolverhampton. Both events conclude with the turning on of our Christmas tree lights, each light shining bright in memory of someone special. As Linda explains: “We have been hosting the barn for over 20 years and have had guests stay with us from as far away as Australia and America, as well as from all over the UK. We also have a lot of local people stay with us too.” Holiday makers, business people, those visiting relatives and local people needing a place to stay in between a house move, renovation works or even to recuperate after surgery - have all enjoyed what New Wood has to offer. “There are plenty of different reasons why guests choose to stay with us at New Wood but we hope that the reason they return time and time again is
because of the enjoyable stay they’ve had.” The Barn sleeps four people and has two bathrooms and The Stable provides accommodation for two. “The Barn and The Stable both benefit from a wood burning stove, comfy leather sofas and a large TV.” There’s also parking available for up to three cars and free WIFI. “Our gates open onto a bridle path that leads down to the Staffordshire and Worcestershire canal, with no passing traffic which is great for walkers and cyclists.” Linda and Mick have worked hard to pay attention to those little details that make all the difference; there are flower boxes and planters outside the cottages, as well as a very unique addition in The Barn. “We’ve got a Wurlitzer juke box containing many vinyl records from the 1960’s and 1970’s in The Barn that many of our guests love,” adds Linda. With so much to offer, it’s no surprise that guests at New Wood Farm can’t wait to book their next stay.

Bombay Pickles
By Rob Taylor For many of us the quality of the Indian restaurant we visit is largely dictated by its proximity to us. If itÕ s local, itÕ s a no-brainer. I know people who remain resolutely loyal to whichever curry house neighbours against their home and others who sacrifice everything at the altar of price. Of course, what this behaviour really speaks of is their unwillingness to travel further than the end of their collective noses or, worse still, points to a refusal to move outside of their favourite takeawayÕ s three-mile free delivery radius. In an age of effortless personal mobility, doesnÕ t it make sense to seek out the very best your local area has to offer? But how exactly do you work out precisely which Indian restaurant is better than its competitors in a market overrun with establishments 78

(the curry industry accounts for a fifth of restaurants in the UK) in an area that is effectively the Ô cradle of curryÕ , all serving food in such a subjective arena of taste. Aunt Agnes may recommend a Chicken Tikka Masala because thatÕ s all sheÕ s ever tried, whereas your mate who crunches for fun on chilli peppers that top the Scoville scale may not be the best person to advise on something youÕ d like to be not Ò too hotÓ ! As ever your best bet is to ask the experts. And they recommend Bombay Pickles in Stourbridge in a big way. Recognised among its peers in a nationwide competition that is in its ninth year, Bombay Pickles is worth travelling to. The Lower High Street, Stourbridge, institution owned and run by Mr Ahmed has just picked up Ô Most Wanted Restaurant of the West Midlands 2019Õ at the

English Curry Awards. High praise indeed considering the awards celebrate the best of the best in the curry industry and see curry houses across England battling it out to be recognised for quality food and service across a variety of categories. The awards are even known fondly as Ò the curry OscarsÓ . Of course, industry recognition does much to attract attention but what I notice first when I visit with my long-suffering girlfriend Nicola is that Bombay Pickles is almost bursting at the seams with customers at only 6pm. I wonder if any of them live locally? The restaurant occupies a choice location and presents a very impressive, expansive glass frontage, allowing potential customers to nose around from the kerbside, seeing the hustle and bustle, the satisfied diners’ faces and even the steaming plates of what is probably Britain’s most beloved food (the curry industry contributes £5 Billion annually in the UK). What you won’t see from outside is that there’s a sizeable upstairs section to the restaurant also. So stop mucking about in the cold and come on inÉ We’re warmly received in the restaurant’s entrance and seated in a choice spot, in the window, overlooking the road outside. This enables me to keep a keen eye on trade, both from takeaway and dinein punters. Our coats are taken and stowed safely away and in what must be a very well-appointed cloakroom. We soak up the pleasant surroundings, taking keen note of the plush furnishings, stylish dŽ cor and immaculately presented tables. Many staff members buzz around, keeping happy many more customers Ð and still there are more left to tend to us. We order drinks and snack on Bombay Mix. So far, so good, the place is lively but not overwhelming, our corner table affords intimacy and we strike up conversation about what to expect next. Hopes are high and are lifted still further when proprietor Mr Ahmed visits our table. It’s clear he takes great pride in the restaurant’s glowing reputation and is pleased to answer questions about his recent awards haul (Bombay Pickles was in the 2019 Tiffin Cup as well), of which he is duly proud. After the requisite poppadoms and assorted dips (standout mention goes to a delicious mint sauce) we head straight to the starters. I order ‘Mix Starter’, which comprises Onion Bhaji, Somosa and Chicken Tikka (£4.25) and Nicola goes for ‘Chicken Chat on Puri’ (£3.95).
We don’t wait long despite how busy the restaurant is – in fact service throughout the evening is exceptional. No matter the footfall through the door – at one point there is a log jam in the doorway which sees people waiting patiently outside to get in Ð the professional and knowledgeable team always get the job done. My starter is well presented and compels me to tuck in immediately. Though the chicken tikka is stuffed with complex and tangy tastes, the onion bhaji steals the show: it is mouth-puckeringly delectable. Already I can tell that this is multi-layered, modern food full of bright, vibrant flavours. Nicola enjoys every mouthful of her choice too, reporting on its originality. I’m beginning to see how Bombay Pickles distinguished itself earlier this year – and I’m loving every minute, and no more so than when I tuck into my main, Ô Garlic Chicken Tikka Masala’, which is spiced and herbed chicken cooked with cream, almonds and house masala sauce, with garlic and mince meat (£8.95). Nicola is itching to try ‘Coriander Special’, a choice of chicken or lamb, cooked with fresh herbs and spices, yoghurt, almonds and coconut and coriander (£9.95). We note the very reasonable menu prices as well. A star attraction, my meal arrives with sundries which include Pilau Rice (£2.75) and plain Nan bread (£2.40) and delivers a knock-out punch: brimming with flavour and delivering intoxicating aromas, I catch myself digging out the very last vestiges from my balti dish with strips of torn nan bread. This alone makes the trip worthwhile. Nicola loves her dish also. We both agree that we’ll be back, even before the complimentary shot of Bailey’s liquor and scoop of ice cream arrives at our table. This is a worthy end to a fine evening. Many of you Town and Village Life readers may already be fortunate enough to call Bombay Pickles your Ò localÓ but for those of you reading from slightly further afield, know this: I travelled from Wombourne to visit. That’s a 16-mile round-trip. And I’ll be travelling many times more in future as well. Bombay Pickles, 22 Lower High Street, Stourbridge DY8 1TA. to a new destination to style a celebrity for a special appearance: whether that’s on TV, for a calendar shoot or even their wedding. . When the couple opened their second salon at the iconic Dorchester Hotel in 2008, Bernie Ecclestone’s daughter Tamara became the face of the brand. And at their London salon, Royston and Nick created a fabulous team, which included their good friend, Ian Carmichael – who is the Queen’s hairdresser. Together the team styled the world’s royalty, rich and famous.
And, it’s these events which have taken Nick and Royston around the world, with the couple being seen everywhere from the Maldives to a garden party at Buckingham Palace.
Their popularity has seen the couple break into TV media and they’ve been featured on Lorraine, Katie Price and Peter Andre, Tamara`s World and Billion-dollar Girl, to name but a few and they are now regulars on ITVBE`s hit reality show The Real Housewives of Cheshire.
But it’s not only the couple who’ve made international appearances, their work has featured on fashion magazine covers in newsagents around the globe. And, with an impressive clientele which includes busy moms to billionaires, Hollywood stars and reality TV personalities, Royston and Nick are always busy flying
Despite all the glitz and glamour though, Royston and Nick have always stayed true to their roots and close to home at their salons in Compton and Shrewsbury, much to the delight of their fiercely loyal regular clientele , many of whom have been with them on their amazing journey right from the very start.

Everyone’s talking about Profhilo PROFHILO IS AN INJECTABLE SKIN RE-MODELLING TREATMENT It’s recommended that you have a top-up after one month, and repeat the process twice a year to enjoy an enduring glow.
Profhilo is an effective and natural looking non-surgical facelift treatment.
beauty salons offering aesthetic treatments, most are not suitably qualified or trained to administer injections or carry out treatments that after all could be dangerous. It’s not worth the risk. We all want to feel and look better, but please make sure you do your research, ensure anyone offering you a treatment is qualified, fully insured and offers a free consultation prior to treatment. Don’t risk it, only use an aesthetic clinic you can trust.
Profhilo is not a dermal filler it is a hyaluronic acid gel, one of the latest innovations to treat skin laxity by skin bio-remodelling. Profhilo is a skin booster made from hyaluronic acid for skin that is losing its elasticity and firmness with age. It creates a fresh natural look and softens fine lines.
Symétrie’s Tracy Butler has been in the aesthetic industry for over 15 years. She has been qualified as a Nurse for over 20 years. She is a member of the RCN (Royal College of Nurses), Dermatology Nursing and fully registered with the NMC (Nursing & Midwifery Council) as an Independent Nurse Prescriber.
Profhilo is creating a real buzz it’s one of the most exciting developments in injectable treatments in a long time and it is taking the beauty world by storm.
When injected, it stimulates the skin’s natural synthesis of collagen for plumped and firmed up skin. As we age, the skin’s ability to produce collagen decreases, Profhilo is strategically injected at key points to rejuvenate the skin’s own collagen-making abilities.
Profhilo is especially effective at treating those areas prone to laxity and sagging like the cheeks, neck, chest and décolletage, upper arms and hands and is suitable for practically anyone, men and women, from 30 years’ old and with no upper age limit. Profhilo isn’t just effective in the treatment of wrinkles and ageing skin – it also helps with radiance and hydration.
The results are fantastic, with many of our clients experiencing increased firmness, elasticity and an overall improved quality of their skin. Results can be visible for up to six months post-treatment, However, this does depend upon the degree of correction required, your age and lifestyle. Book a FREE consultation for Profhilo today on 01384 886 646

Hearing and vision are important for our health and wellbeing, though we don’t often think of our senses in this way. The Hearing Care Partnership together with Taylor Biddle Opticians have given their guide to building health across our lifespan through better hearing and vision.
What is healthy ageing? The World Health Organization defines it as “the ability to grow, learn and make decisions, to stay active. To be and do what you value throughout your life.” Different things affect our ability to age well, including our genes, our lifestyle, our location and our relationships with friends and family. It’s true that some of the choices we make in early life can alter the course of our later life, like how much we exercised and what we ate. But it’s never too late to make a positive change.
• Stay connected: Do things that give you joy and meaning, whether that’s playing tennis, taking up photography, or visiting places you love. All of these things help you to feel more positive. • Check your hearing and vision: People who look after their hearing and vision by getting expert advice and the right treatment, stay more active mentally and physically. By looking after our eyes and ears, we can be ready for whatever comes our way. Seeing things more clearly. Hearing and being heard. And enjoying more of the people and things that we love.
Staying connected Our eyes and ears are essential to healthy ageing. That’s because our hearing and vision are central to maintaining active social lives. While we may notice changes in our vision, it can be harder to detect – or come to terms with – the changes in our hearing. You may not notice changes in your hearing yourself. Instead, those closest to you will likely spot the signs first. So, what are the warning signs of hearing loss? • You might start watching TV at a volume that is louder than usual. • You might find it harder to hear what’s being said when there’s lots of background noise (for example in a busy café, restaurant, or meeting). This can lead to you withdrawing from conversations as you struggle to hear. • You need to concentrate more to understand certain voices (especially soft or low ones). • You find it challenging to hear over the phone. If you have noticed any of these in your day to day life, come and have a Free Hearing Assessment. Call us today on 0800 52 00 546.
So how can I look after my senses for longer? It’s never too late to make changes to the way you live. Here’s some tips to get you started.
The Audiology Service at Taylor Biddle Opticians is led by Helen Barton, who is dedicated to helping people live their lives to the full. She is driven to help each individual make the most of their hearing, to facilitate healthy ageing. “I have a passion for providing excellent customer care and I know that the key to this is good communication and listening skills. Working with The Hearing Care Partnership allows me the time I need to spend with each patient to ensure their care is tailored to them as an individual and to their lifestyle. Keep life in full colour with The Hearing Care Partnership and Taylor Biddle Opticians. Book a FREE hearing health check today on 0800 52 00 546 or visit www.thcp.co.uk/booking
• Stay active: Just 30 minutes of activity a day can help promote mobility and health in later life. What counts as ‘activity’? Anything that raises your heart rate until you feel slightly out of breath. 106

NEW ECHO SYSTEM FOR HEART ASSESSMENT
Cardiologists and imaging staff at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital have welcomed the installation of a permanent new Echocardiography machine, used to assess the structure and function of the heart’s chambers and valves. The new ultrasound system is a high spec Philips Affiniti 70 with echocardiography capabilities. Dr Sandeep Hothi, a Consultant Cardiologist, also at New Cross Hospital, joined the team of seven cardiologists at Nuffield Health 12 months ago. Dr Hothi explains, “My main focus is advanced imaging, which is non-invasive diagnostic imaging with colleagues in radiology and radiography. Such investigation enables us to formulate optimum treatment of heart conditions. Patients who come to see me in clinic typically have chest pain, palpitations, shortness of breath and lethargy, signs of fluid retention

or blackouts. Prompt evaluation by a cardiologist is the key to determining the point at which a problem requires treatment.” The heart specialist says, “Having the new Echocardiography machine on-site complements our fabulous range of imaging facilities, including CT and MRI, and expert staff. Angina, which is pain due to coronary disease, typically causes patients to have chest pain when they exert themselves due to a narrowing in one or more arteries to the heart. Through diagnosing this condition, experts can advise on appropriate treatments to treat symptoms and significantly reduce the risk of heart attack. The risk of coronary artery disease is increased when diabetic, having high blood pressure, if you are or have been a smoker, having high cholesterol or if there is a family history of this at a young age, typically under 55-60.” National guidance stipulates that CT coronary angiography is the first line test in chest pain suspected to be angina because of the ability to get good quality images of the coronary arteries in a CT scanner without the risks of an invasive coronary angiogram, typically performed in a cardiac catheter laboratory.
“Depending on the findings, additional non-invasive imaging may be required and, in some cases, an invasive angiogram. Cardiac MRI is an advanced imaging method that does not use radiation and allows imaging of the heart muscle and valves and can also assess the sufficiency of the blood supply to the heart muscle. A stress echo provides similar information by speeding up the heart with medication or with exercise, and scanning the heart while doing so, to determine whether the blood supply to the heart is normal.” Common diagnoses that patients may be concerned about include angina, arrhythmias or heart failure. Other conditions diagnosed at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital include high blood pressure (hypertension), heart muscle disorders, (cardiomyopathies), elevated cholesterol, breathlessness and lethargy, inherited heart diseases, black outs and heart valve disease.
If you have symptoms of any of the conditions mentioned in this article, you should get your heart checked out. For more information, please ring ring 01902 793 234 or see www.nuffieldhealth.com/hospitals/wolverhampton www.townandvillagelifemag.co.uk

“Don’t make me laugh!” “I didn’t sleep very well last night” “Excuse me, where are the toilets?” If your inner chatterbox is constantly talking to you with things like that, then you’ll be aware of how energy sapping and time-consuming incontinence can be. Even the word isn’t nice – the images it conjures up are nothing like what you may be dealing with. But it does impact on your mental health, finances, confidence, personal relationships and leisure activities. It can be caused by so many things, and affects women of all ages and yet it’s still a taboo subject. The embarrassment and perceived stigma prevent many women seeking help and finding a solution. If you have gone to your GP, they may have given you little hope as, up until now, there have been very few effective remedies. Without invasive surgery, drugs and very little physical effort, Better Life Now can offer you a solution to those sleepless nights, little accidents and self-consciousness. Fully clothed, you are seated on the Esmella Chair which has been specially designed and engineered to use electromagnetic energy to exercise your pelvic floor muscles. Kegel exercises are notoriously difficult to do (and who remembers to do them anyway!?) but the Esmella Chair does over 11,000 Kegels in just 28 minutes in a non-invasive, pain-free way.
110
Better Life Now FP EDIT.indd 1
The treatment is simple, non-invasive and pain free; and is revolutionising women’s lives in just six sessions over three weeks! The Esmella Chair was bought by Suzanne Morison who had suffered from urge incontinence for many years and was becoming increasingly isolated and anxious. Her days were planned around where the toilets were and what clothes she could wear to ‘hide’ any accidents. “After having my children, I noticed a few leaks which I hoped would stop in time. A busy life meant that I forgot to do my pelvic floor exercises and over time, the problem got worse. The pads I was using were getting bigger and it was affecting my confidence and marriage.” She felt it was something she was resigned to live with which is quite common and can impact hugely on personal relationships, mental well-being and leading a relaxed normal life. But the discovery of this chair transformed her life and after just six sessions, she has gone from wearing thick pads 24 hours a day to a thin one in the day and nothing at night.
By working from the privacy and comfort of their home, Gloria and Suzanne aim to make their clients feel relaxed and unselfconscious about the treatment; soon becoming confidantes. “We are happy to leave ladies on their own for some “Me Time” but often stay chatting and have found that talking about their issues makes a huge difference to them.” says Gloria. Another benefit of the treatment can be for those who want a boost to their sex life; whether they have an incontinence issue or not. By exercising the pelvic floor muscles, blood flow increases to the area and it can heighten sensation and awareness during sex. Suzanne and Gloria want this treatment to be accessible to every woman and offer a variety of payment plans to make sure that cost isn’t a barrier to stop women getting to live the best life they can. The treatment consists of just six visits over three weeks and prices start from £49 per month.
“Before the treatment, I would wake in the night and was unable to make it to the toilet in time. I was exhausted, embarrassed and frustrated! But now, I feel I’ve got my life back!” The results were so astonishing, Suzanne wanted to help other women with similar issues and so invested in the Esmella Chair. Working with her daughter in law, Gloria, they want to help as many women as possible get their confidence and lives back.

Willows Dental & Implant Centre
DENTISTRY
AT ITS BEST Bringing a brand-new approach to dentistry, Wombourne –based dental practice, Willows Dental, is giving clients something to smile about. Committed to offering a patient-led approach and intent on building excellent relationships with clients, the award-winning surgery leads the way in cosmetic treatments, dental implants and treating nervous patients. Our reporter, Helen Taylor, paid a visit to the practice to meet with owner - and principal dentist – Neel Barchha to find out more.
It’s so refreshing to walk into a dental surgery and for it to feel absolutely nothing like a dental surgery! Has the practice been designed with nervous patients in mind? Yes, everything has been designed to be as patient-friendly as possible from Sudoku’s, shoe polish machines, hot and cold drinks and even reading glasses if our clients forget them. We want our clients to feel completely comfortable and relaxed whenever they’re spending time with us. We have dedicated consultation rooms, which are free of dental equipment, so that nervous patients can discuss their treatment in a calm and tranquil environment. We are also one of a few surgeries to offer sedation during treatment.

I’ve also heard that there are some special entertainment features at the surgery which are especially popular with younger patients? We’ve got Game Boys and PlayStations which the kids and adults love, as well as TV screens mounted on the ceiling. We also do pizza nights for those attending late night appointments and there’s always a warm drink waiting on arrival. And, when it comes to dental treatment, we offer free places for children as well as home visits for elderly people who are unable to travel to us. It’s that sort of attention to detail which must have transformed what it means to visit the dentist for hundreds of your clients. Yes, it has. We deal with patients who have had really bad experiences with other dentists over the years and so we have always made it our goal to ensure that every aspect of what we do here is to the highest possible standards. Our mission statement is to give everyone the confidence to eat, smile, kiss and connect. Your smile is incredibly important and whether it’s addressing cosmetic issues or undertaking treatment for a dental problem that you may have been having, the results really can be life changing and we want everyone to benefit. We offer 0% finance for our dental treatments meaning that no one has to wait to achieve the smile they want. And, in addition to dental work we also offer facial aesthetic treatments, like Botox, which take care of those telltale signs of ageing. You’ve got an impressive team of dentists, hygienists and support staff at the practice to take care of your clients.
We have seven highly skilled dentists as well as the latest dental equipment – like 3D scanners which enables us to efficiently diagnose and treat any issue and undertake any cosmetic work. Our hygienists, support team and receptionists are highly trained and really friendly. We strive to offer an incredibly efficient service which enables our clients to arrange appointments to suit their schedule any time of day whether that’s morning, lunchtime or evening – and our receptionists are so highly trained that they even offer courses in communication to other dental surgeries. Our support team work closely with patients to help them gain a real understanding of their treatment, answer questions and address any concerns. Clients tell us that this process takes the ‘mystery’ out of their dental work and helps them grasp dental jargon which is often used elsewhere. We take before and after pictures in our in-house studio for the cosmetic work that we do so that clients can see the amazing results of their treatment. You have earned an excellent reputation amongst clients and you’ve also gained outstanding industry recognition too. We were delighted to win numerous awards at the UK Dentistry Awards and we’ve just yesterday been nominated for another eight. We’re thrilled that our clients give us such positive reviews and recommend us time and time again. Community is really important to us and we’re always getting involved in local charity events as well sponsoring local football teams and amateur dramatic groups. We are proud to be a part of our local community and want to offer our patients the very best dental service.
I’m really proud of the team which we’ve sourced from the best of the best even as far away as Boston which allows us to deal with all manner of dental issues under-one-roof.

“The more risks you allow children to take, the better they learn to take care of themselves” Roald Dahl. The different ways in which children learn are fundamental to our Early Years curriculum and our well qualified and highly skilled practitioners provide opportunities for children to display three characteristics of effective learning in both our wellresourced outdoor provision: playing and exploring - children investigate and experience things, and ‘have a go’; active learning - children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties, and enjoy achievements;
For some of us, this statement brings back happy memories of our childhood days, which were filled with freedom and what is now termed in education ‘Risky Play.’ Memories of weekends and school holidays, consisting of playing in the local park, climbing trees, whizzing around on the roundabout, and playing hide and seek in the woods, without the supervision of an adult! In this day and age of risk assessments and safeguarding, it can often be difficult to reproduce such opportunities for risky play. At Newbridge Preparatory School, our aim is to put that type of experience back into today’s version of childhood. Why? Because such outdoor play promotes cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being. Through a play activity www.townandvillagelifemag.co.uk
as simple as climbing a tree, a child can experiment, solve problems, think creatively, and co-operate with others. The chance to experience opportunities for unstructured play, in which a child can decide what to do, with whom and how, promotes positive self-esteem, autonomy, and confidence.
creating and thinking critically children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop strategies for doing things. For the more robust activities we have strong links with The Kingswood Trust who provide the opportunity for children from Nursery to Year Six to experience all of this within a safe and secure environment. Children in Nursery experience a term of Forest School, Reception children enjoy 3 seasonal visits and children in Year groups One to Year Six attend joint adventure days. Our Year Three and Four girls are also fortunate to experience a three day residential where the girls climb trees, forage for food and cook on an open fire, to name a few things. At Newbridge Preparatory School we offer high levels of academic challenge preparing girls for the 11 plus but more importantly offer the gift of childhood and developing girls into wellrounded happy individuals. 123
