Smiling Single So it’s the time of year when we’re supposed to be writing articles about wedding smile makeovers but what about if you're not getting married? What if you’re single, awesome and fabulous? Surely you deserve a new smile too. So for all of you who’ve picked up this wedding issue but just want to be the best you can be and have a beautiful smile here’s what we can do for you. Whether you’re out on the social scene or looking for a companion your smile is one of the first things that people are attracted to. So what can you do to improve it? Well, a diamond polish clean is a good start. Our gentle team of hygienists can certainly give you the fresh look, getting rid of the stains from the outside of your teeth, freshening your breath and giving you the confidence to eat, smile, kiss and connect with anyone you choose to engage with. So what next? Well, over time stain builds up not just on the outside of teeth but on the inside too with our bespoke whitening systems we can whiten your teeth comfortably, safely and effectively. But what about the metal fillings? Okay, we can get rid of those remnants of dentistry gone by, using the latest techniques in modern dentistry. Your new white fillings will be long lasting, comfortable and beautiful. So we’ve cleaned them, whitened them, got rid of those unsightly metal fillings, you now want them straighter? No problem, we can straighten them invisibly, comfortably and in around six months. How does that sound?
Missing teeth are no problem either, we have the closest thing to replacing your natural teeth available to us, Dental Implants. With everything done in house and the ability to spread the investment at 0% interest it means you don’t even have to save up, you can have it now. Wait. So we’ve got your smile looking spectacular and now you want to look even younger. Ok so we’re not one of those places that will create an artificial look but if you want some natural fine line removal and maybe just to redefine the upper and lower lines of your lips, then we can do that too. And if you want all of this carried out and you don’t want to feel or remember having any of it done, we can do that too with advanced sedation techniques. You can have your new smile without you even feeling a thing. So there it is. We know we’re writing this in the wedding edition of this magazine, but we care about our all of our potential clients whatever your marital status. So if you’re single and awesome, or engaged and due to be married and you want to have the confidence to eat, smile, kiss and connect, then contact us on the details below and one of our award winning team will arrange for us to look after you.

From the EDITOR Summer’s over, folks! It’s official, you read it here first and you can’t un-ring that bell. That’s the message you’ll be receiving loud and clear as you thumb through the forthcoming pages. It is full steam ahead to Autumn. Children will soon be heading back to school and the next Brexit deadline – gulp – looms large on the horizon. There may be fewer holidays to look forward to and no hot weather (and we’ll miss action like our cricketers winning the World Cup) but you won’t be bored as attention turns towards the home. As ever, our
advertisers have got everything covered, from big stuff – think: 3 Pines Building Company – all the way down to small home improvements as well, with plenty of home furnishings and carpets thrown in for good measure, from ND Walters and Premier Carpets.
a fresh update from Enville Golf Club with an accent on Ladies Golf (including a Social page splash!) and a top-of-the-class Education section. Oh, and we haven’t forgotten it is weddings season too (see: Country Baskets for unique inspiration).
We’ve got loads of eating-out options as well: see our restaurant reviews of the brand-new Roe Deer Pub, Wordsley and Halfpenny Green Wine Estate. For the upcoming party season, we have ample Fashion, Hair (special mention to Royston Blythe on reaching yet another prestigious final) and Beauty segments. Plus, there’s
We can’t bring back the hot weather, but you can always bank on us to give you the lighter side of living.

Industry Competition Success for Three Pines
Wolverhampton-based building firm Three Pines Building Co Ltd, already boasts an excellent reputation in the industry but now it has been made official. The company was awarded the prize for ‘Best New Home’ in the Federation of Master Builders’ (FMB) Midlands Region awards, which were held on Friday 21st June at the Hilton Double Tree, Stratford-upon-Avon. The company collected the prize for the development of 16 new build homes – ranging from two bed terrace houses to five bed detached properties - which were all uniquely designed and completed with landscaped gardens. Judges were quick to praise Three Pines for their well-constructed development, calling the firm a ‘credit to the FMB’ and recognising their excellent service: ‘Time and time again, we have been impressed with just how far theses builders will go to ensure their client is happy. It is this dedication that we want to celebrate’.
06
Since 1999, the Master Builder Awards has been a flagship for high-quality building work, showcasing examples of fantastic craftsmanship, exceptional customer service and building excellence.
town & village life magazine | september/october 2019
So, achieving an award is a real accolade. And, one of the company’s employees, Samuel Wells achieved a special acknowledgment, as he was named ‘Midlands Region Apprentice of the Year’, following the FMB’s national search to find the building industry’s best apprentice. Sam was described as a ‘great example of the apprenticeship route into the industry’ and his hard work, skill and ability were recognised as he was awarded the coveted prize. Both Samuel and Three Pines will now go through to compete in the national finals for the chance to win the UK category title. The national ceremony is held at the InterContinental Hotel, Park Lane, London on 20th September. Good luck from the entire Town & Village Life Magazine Team

RECIPE Crispy macaroni cheese
This can be served as a canape or as a main for a bowl food/tapas event or a comforting snack. Preparation time: 1 hour MAKES: 20-25 portions Ingredients • 250g x macaroni pasta • 50g x butter or margarine • 50g x plain flour • 100 ml x milk • 50g x cheddar cheese, to taste • 10g x parmesan cheese • 1 x tsp. English mustard • 1x tsp. chopped chives Method 1. Cook pasta in boiling salted water until cooked, then run under cold water and leave to drain. 16
2. Make your thick cheese sauce, melted butter first then add flour, make sure you turn the heat down and allow to cook out, add milk in 3 stages mixing well until velvety smooth every time. 3. Add remaining ingredients, season with salt and pepper, then taste taste, taste. Did you know some chef’s use Worcester sauce? Chefs tip: always add warm milk as this speeds up the cooking time of your bechamel sauce, a wooden or plastic spoon is all that’s needed, no whisk if made correctly. 4. Add sauce to pasta and mix well. 5. Line a suitable tray 5cm high or container with cling firm and set your macaroni in the fridge, usually takes 1-2 hours.
6. Cut in to cubes then bread crumb, flour first, beaten egg then bread crumbs. 7. You can shallow fry then finish in the oven or deep fry, either way 10 minutes maximum cooking time. I like to serve with basil mayonnaise and shoots. Recipe by

A colourful new kitchen provides perfect family space When Lulu was looking to invest an unexpected windfall on a new kitchen for her family home, she wanted to spend it wisely and was looking for a local company that was recommended by others.
“After meeting Claire and visiting the showroom, I felt confident that the project was in good hands,” says Lulu. “I was looking for a company that could manage the complete project and they did this brilliantly. From the amazing CAD drawings that brought the design to life, to the meticulous attention to detail during the installation, everything was handled in an efficient and professional manner.” Lulu’s previous kitchen was a basic MDF kitchen that had seen better days, she was looking to update the look and add in some colour. The gorgeous Priory Blue
shaker doors match the style of her period home beautifully and when combined with the Prosecco White units at high level, she has plenty of storage and a lovely contrast. Fitting kitchens into period homes is not always straightforward, as was the case with Lulu’s home, but our installation team have plenty of experience and took the time and trouble to get it just right. Lulu says, “I really appreciated the skill of the installation team, they matched the sequencing of the wall tiles to the brick walls outside the kitchen window, and adjusted the fitting so that the units fitted the uneven walls perfectly.
“The whole family is enjoying the new kitchen, it is a pleasure to use. My husband loves the gadgets that he wanted, the hot tap, the Neff hide and slide oven and the wine cooler. “Claire remained calm and supportive throughout, making the whole experience a pleasure. I feel that I have invested my money wisely and know that the kitchen will bring many years of pleasure to our family. “I would recommend Roman Bathrooms without hesitation.” 18

Simple Tax Saving TipS
1. Help to buy ISA For any first time buyers this is a must and for any parents or grandparents who want to assist towards a first property purchase then this is a great way of doing so. These ISAs are cash-based and set up with most banks. You can start with an initial amount of £1,200 and save up to £200 per month up to a maximum of £12,000 and, if used towards a deposit on a first property purchase, your solicitor will claim back the tax which results in a 25% uplift. Please note that to qualify there has to be a minimum amount of £1,600 saved in the ISA.
2. Marriage Allowance For any married couples where one spouse does not fully utilise their personal allowance and the other is a basic rate tax payer, you can transfer 10% of the personal allowance which will save £250 in tax this tax year. It can also be backdated to 6th April 2015. 3. Auto-enrolment I am alarmed by the number of employees who have opted out of their employer’s pension scheme thinking that pensions are a waste of money. Where else can you double your money overnight and even after tax, for every £10 you invest you will receive a return of £17. For higher rate tax payers the savings are even greater. 4. Nearing retirement, higher rate tax payer? Invest in a pension rather than an ISA For anyone nearing retirement, rather than saving into an ISA, invest your money into a pension and benefit from the tax credit. For higher rate tax payers, if you invest £60, HMRC pay £40
22
which gives a total contribution of £100. If on retirement you become a basic rate tax payer, after tax, this will return you £85. 5. Non taxpayers contribute to a pension For anyone over the age of 55 with little or no earnings, you can contribute £2,880 per annum into a pension which will attract a HMRC credit of £720, giving a total contribution of £3,600. You can then withdraw this in its entirety and providing your total income is less than your personal allowance, it will be tax free. 6. Thinking of retiring early? Make sure you utilise your personal allowance in retirement This is particularly appealing for anyone with savings who is still working, does not have any significant retirement provision and is looking to retire in the near future For an example of how this works, I have recently met with new clients where one has retired on his 60th birthday and his spouse is looking to retire in 3 years’ time on or before her
town & village life magazine | september/october 2019
63rd birthday. She has very little in the way of pension provision and does not receive her state pension until she is 63 however they do have savings and she is currently earning £14,000 per annum. I have recommended that she contributes £11,200 into her pension from her savings which will attract a HMRC tax credit of £2,800 and I have suggested that she does this for 3 years. When she then retires she can withdraw this money completely tax free as she will not have any other taxable earnings which in effect gives her a 25% uplift on her savings and in these days of low interest rates, for a no risk return this is unbeatable. And finally, not tax related but please review your pensions regularly! One of my greatest bugbears in life is the number of people who have money saved in pensions and take no interest or can’t be bothered to look at the annual statements when they arrive. There are so many old style pension contracts still in existence that have expensive annual management charges, poor investment fund choice and offer no post retirement options. Looking at investment returns in isolation, there are some policies with Phoenix Life that have not paid any bonus since the turn of the century and many more companies have funds invested www.townandvillagelifemag.co.uk
in closed funds that are poorly invested giving mediocre returns. Treat your pensions like you would money in a bank as basically with the new rules that is exactly what it is. The number of new clients I meet who have, in some cases, over £100,000 invested in pensions with companies who are no longer active in the marketplace is staggering so please don’t fall into the trap of thinking your pension is not worth bothering with - do something today?

Stourbridge Rugby Club
from 7.30 we will be holding SRFC Women’s Rugby Fit sessions for Girls and Women over 14. There is no contact so it will be a great way to keep fit, have fun and learn a new sport. Sessions are free to club members or £2.00 for nonmembers. Further details can be found on https://www.facebook. com/groups/2972513982972807 so you can message Darren or Gwaine for more information. The Facebook page is only for Over 18’s. If you are Under 18 please ask your parent or guardian to join the group on your behalf. And more for the Ladies. On September 21st when the First XV are playing Hull RUFC we have a Ladies Lunch. As a special thank you to all the Ladies who are such an integral, welcome and appreciated part of the club there will be a two-course meal for £20 to include match entry. Further details will appear on the website.
The new season starts here at Stourton Park on Saturday September 7th with a First XV fixture that should attract many new spectators as our visitors Loughborough Students have never competed here before. Last year they were relegated from National League One along with our old friends Caldy from the Wirral. The other three newcomers to National Two North this year are Hull RUFC, Scunthorpe and Luctonians, all of whom were promoted at the end of last season. The Lions’ opening fixture on September 7th is away against newcomers Kenilworth. The other three newcomers to their league are Kidderminster, Lichfield and Ludlow. In turn the four sides no longer in their league are Moseley Oak, Bromsgove, Longton and Walsall. The bonus with so many local sides in the league is that
four of the home games will be under floodlights on Friday nights. Old Halesonians on October 19th, Droitwich on November 22nd, and in the new year Worcester Wanderers on February 14th and Dudley Kingswinford on March 27th. Throughout the Summer in conjunction with Sports in Schools our Mini and Junior sides have enjoyed three Rugby camps in July and two more in August. A third is organised for half-term week October 29th and 30th. Nor are we forgetting the Ladies here as we are holding a Girls “Pitch up and Play“ session for Under 13’s, Under 15’s and Under 18’s on Sunday September 29th from 1.30 to 3.30 in conjunction with the RFU. Every Monday
On Saturday September 14th, the day The Lions play Kidderminster we have an NHS Rugby event with free match entry for all NHS staff, raising funds for the Dudley Group of Hospitals Trust Charity to promote the NHS in a positive, proactive way. There will be opportunities for the public and NHS staff to access various health checks on the day. Our Bonfire event this year is Friday November 1st. We look forward to seeing you there. As always, the Clubhouse is available for corporate functions or for your parties. Please contact our Hospitality Manager Donna Tromans on 01384 395000 for all the options.

N. D. Walters
The Carpet and Flooring Experts
Behind the small exterior of Sedgleybased carpet and flooring specialists, N.D. Walters, lies a vast 6,000 square foot warehouse that’s filled with the best brands in carpets and flooring, as well as an extensive range of budget designs. As owner, Nick Walters, explains: “We supply all types of carpets, laminates, vinyls and rugs. We have a fantastic selection of Karndean, Amtico, Furlong, Quick-Step and V4 Wood flooring to choose from, as well as carpet ranges from leading manufacturers like, Axminster, Brintons, Greendale and Adams Carpets.” In fact, the family-run company has an impressive dedicated Karndean showroom: “We’re a Platinum retailer for Karndean and our extensive recently refurbished showroom is second in size only to Karndean’s itself.” And, there’s something to suit every home décor at the showroom: “We cater for all styles and tastes - we have very traditional designs, as well as the most up-to-date and fashionable ranges.” 28
There’s also an impressive selection of rugs to choose from too.
And there are always bargains to be had:
“Rugs instantly give the home a really cosy and comfortable feel and can complete the look of your room perfectly.”
“We have a lot of end-of-roll stock available all the time, so there are plenty of exciting prices to be found in store.”
Earning an excellent reputation in the industry – and celebrating 43 years in business this year – N.D. Walters has become the premier choice for homeowners and commercial clients alike, who are looking for superior products and service.
The company also offer free home consultations and come highly recommended by the Carpet Foundation - an independent organisation who monitor and check on carpet retailers to ensure standards of quality and service.
“We’ve got years of experience in the trade, as well as an expertly trained team, so we can offer our customers plenty of advice. We also have our very own team of expert fitters who take care of installation.”
“We carry out a lot of insurance work across the entire West Midlands region and complete jobs for many different organisations – and completed a project at Himley Hall.”
All of the company’s products are extremely competitively priced, as the business works closely with the Greendale Group, which is the largest carpet and flooring buying company in the UK.
And N.D. Walters has also been featured on both DIY SOS and Cowboy Builders where they helped out two families by supplying the flooring that made their home transformation complete.
“Being a member of Greendale means that we can offer a huge range of products, but still compete in terms of price too, passing the savings on to the customer.”
So, if you haven’t visited before, be sure to make a trip to N.D. Walters before you begin any home improvements this autumn - it’ll be well worth your while.
N.D. Walters are pleased to be one of the sponsors of the Sedgley Beer and Gin Festival taking place on Friday 27th and Saturday 28th of September. This year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever. See page 44 for more information. town & village life magazine | september/october 2019

Castle Blinds
A fa m il y affair Castle Blinds and Awnings is an independent familyrun business which was established in 1993. Brian Jones started the company when he had a conservatory installed on the family home whilst looking for blinds for the conservatory. Brian had numerous quotes for blinds and was shocked at the prices that were being quoted. Brian subsequently noticed an advert in a national newspaper for a blind company that were looking for agents within the Midlands area, so Brian contacted the company and soon became an agent. He continued to sell and install blinds whilst having a full-time job within the brewery trade, this lasted five years
before Brian made Castle Blinds and Awnings his full-time job. The company eventually started to manufacture vertical blinds from his parent’s garage. In 1999 the company moved to more permanent premises. In 2003 Castle Blinds and Awning saw Brian’s youngest sibling Amanda start with the
company on the manufacturing side, she has since worked her way up to director level, and she now takes responsibility for the day to day running of the company to allow Brian to concentrate on the marketing side of the business. In August 2015, Brian’s eldest sibling Lee joined the company to move Castle Blinds into the external market. Including the likes of Awnings, Parasols and Solar shading. And he has in turn developed team knowledge along the way.

Hagley Art Club Paintings displayed at Hagley train station
Hagley Art Club celebrates its 30th year in existence with its annual art exhibition 2019 at Hagley Community Centre on the weekend of 8th to 10th November 2019.
Hagley Art Club owes its existence to the late Alan Pritchard, and a handful of his friends, becoming formally recognised in 1989 to be the organisation it is now. The club welcomes anyone with an interest in art to join them every 2nd Friday of the month at St Saviour’s Church in West Hagley. Whatever interest or medium it may be, whether an accomplished practitioner or an enthusiastic ‘dabbler’, there are lots of opportunities to spend time with others who share their interests.
The club takes this opportunity to invite visitors to view their members’ work from the past year and features many different mediums from traditional watercolour, oil and acrylic landscapes, melancholic graphite sketches, whimsical mixed media productions and even modern works using Perspex and lino-cut prints.
The club meets every 2nd Friday of the month where there is usually either a talk or demonstration by a professional artist, free to members but visitors are welcome with a guest fee of £4.
With over 50 members the variety of work available is huge, with most of it, both framed and unframed for sale, as are collections of craft items and greeting cards all taken from original artwork produced by members. A good opportunity to pick up early Christmas items, perhaps? Although the club exhibits at various other venues throughout the year such as Russells Hall Hospital, Harvington Hall and the Belbroughton Scarecrow Festival, the annual exhibition is the highlight as it is by far the largest collection with over 200 works; all having been produced in the last 12 months. The weekend provides art enthusiasts with an opportunity for a good old browse, the possibility of purchasing reasonably priced original art and a sit down with a cup of tea or coffee and a piece of homemade cake. 34
There are usually 2 sometimes 3 Saturday tutored workshops spread out through the year, dates varying but advertised on our inhouse produced flyer, announced at meetings or appearing on our Facebook page or website www.hagleyartclub.co.uk. Future events include working with pen and ink wash, coloured pencil and even Japanese-style painting. In October members are invited to bring pieces of finished or unfinished work to the annual appraisal for advice and constructive criticism by a professional artist and other club members. This is much less scary and more fun than it sounds!
saw a trip to Patchings Art Festival but one of the main attractions is of course, the opportunity to exhibit their work publicly for a nominal fee and the opportunity to sell. One of our latest ventures has been securing the permanent exhibition space at Hagley Railway Station in the form of eight poster size frames around the station which are offered to members to display their work very publicly! Any member can partake and the posters are rotated so that everyone gets the chance to participate if they wish. The club welcomes new faces and anyone who wishes to take an even more active role in helping to run the club will find opportunities to have roles such as helping with exhibitions, organising programmes and generally enjoying the social side. You don’t have to be Van Gogh, just have an interest in art and all things arty!
In addition, there is a painting circle every Tuesday afternoon held at Churchill Village Hall as an informal opportunity for people to get together and paint. There is a nominal charge presently of £2. New members from any area are always encouraged and can benefit from the various activities organised by the club, for example, this year town & village life magazine | september/october 2019

Ninety three years of excellent customer service If you’re busy updating, improving or redesigning your home interior this autumn, you’ll no doubt be keen to find a selection of quality and contemporary furniture to complete the new look. And, there’s no better place to start your search than with a visit to Pargeters extensive showroom, that’s located in Stourbridge’s High Street. Displaying modern designs, from leading British brands, over three floors, there are looks to suit every home interior style. And, what’s more there’s an incredible 25% off most leading brands as part of the company’s amazing autumn sale event. As Miles explains: “We have got lots of fantastic new displays at the showroom and we’re delighted to offer our customers a substantial discount in our autumn sale event.” A change in direction has taken place over the last five years at the family-run store, which has
seen the business focusing on being an upholstery specialist that no longer sells bedroom furniture, curtains and carpets. Now instead, there is a brand-new department that specialises in Sherborne lift and rise beds, reclining chairs - which are all exempt from VAT - as well as sofas to match. With all of this and more you’re sure to find outstanding designs and style at affordable prices when you pay a visit. In fact, customers at Pargeters are always surprised by the independent stores’ low prices, as Miles explains: “Sometimes an established business and single store furniture shop can be deemed to be more expensive to buy from than larger group stores.
“But I can assure you that it won’t cost you to shop at Pargeters, very often we are cheaper and will price match the leading brands. We pride ourselves on offering the lowest possible prices combined with the highest standard of customer service.” Indeed, the store is renowned for its exceptional service and that’s why it has remained a firm favourite with locals, ever since its doors first opened over 90 years ago. Unlike their competitors, the staff at Pargeters aren’t on commission, which means their focus is entirely on helping you make the purchase that’s right for you – if, of course, you decide to buy from the company. “We don’t sell ‘add-ons’ – like finance or insurance, which some companies use to boost their profits,” adds Miles. Pargeters are the longest established premier stockist of G Plan furniture.
The company offers free delivery within a 50 mile radius and will also take your old items away free of charge. So, whatever you’ve got in mind for your home interior this autumn, make it look amazing with the addition of a quality buy from Pargeters. 36

Music is a major part of life, whether you are on the way to work humming away at a song or in the shower singing your heart out, music always seems to be involved. Technology has advanced remarkably in recent years, especially when it comes to music and the devices, we use to listen to it. Portable Bluetooth speakers are a great illustration of this. Knowing that we can take our music with us wherever we go with ease, has become part of everyday life. Technology decided that Portable Bluetooth speakers were not enough and had to take things one step further, by introducing this concept into lighting. Now you can listen to music through
your bathroom mirror or even your outdoor light in the garden. Outdoor Entertaining During the summer your garden is the place to entertain your guests, by chilling out in the garden enjoying a barbecue. Now you will be able to sit out all night in the warm evening, listening to your favourite music with a glass of wine and talk the night away. At Lighting R Us we offer a selection of these modern light fittings that utilise the latest LED technology, making the light both bright and energy efficient.

Sedgley Charity
Beer & Gin Festival
Friday & Saturday 27 & 28 September 2019 Sedgley’s Charity Beer Festival has been winning acclaim from across the Black Country for its top ales and full live music entertainment program. So much so, the Gin and Beer bars are extended this year and two more live acts have been added to make a seven-band line up. We have a bigger and better Gin Bar to add to a new 42-barrel selection of England’s finest ales, no less than 10 ciders, wines and Prosecco too. Gin and Beer Festival lovers are invited to try a cocktail of fine drinks, and get foot tapping to a wide range of live musical favourites. There’s a local friendly atmosphere, drinks, entertainment and festival souvenir glass, all included in a £12 gate ticket. Most of the specially selected ales come from afar with a few local favourites added in for good measure. This combination of drinks and good music has made this festival a top autumn fixture in the Black Country. Amazingly this excellent cosy event is organised by 1st Sedgley Scout Group who erect 2 marquees and three stages in their grounds to accommodate the bars, bands and the hundreds of local folk that attend the charity festival.
to fund a new roof and equipment, for its members. Other charities, Marie Curie, Midland Freewheelers, Sycamore Centre, Beacon Centre, Royal British Legion, West Midlands and Compton Care have all benefited. MUSIC - On the bar stage drinkers will be entertained on Friday night with live music from locals Ben & Alun Davies, who will be serving up a range of 60’s, blues, folk, and soft rock numbers. Also playing on Friday night on the marquee stage will be Irish band, Damn the Weather, performing Irish songs of The Dubliners, The Clancy’s, The Pogues, and others…
Chairman, Saul Burton says: “The charity festival just keeps going from strength to strength! Our festival team choose such great ales, ciders and top-quality live music that people just love it. The new Gin Bar last year was such a success that we’ve had to enlarge the gin marquee and bring in two more bands. It’s such a superb community atmosphere, where local folk meet local folk and raise a glass for charity.” So, as all the Scout Group volunteers prepare for this September’s event, more drink variety and bands are most definitely; ‘the order of the day’. SEDGLEY REAL ALE BEER FESTIVAL HELPING CHARITIES: The money raised from the beer festival is used to benefit the Scout Group, Children in Need, and many local charities. Scouts used last year’s proceeds
Saturday afternoon, on the marquee stage, will be the popular Sedgley Ukulele Strummers; thirty or more ukulele players, producing a foot tapping tempo, with a good dose of fun. After a stunning debut last year and popular demand, the Empty Can Band return on Saturday evening. Star billing on the marquee stage on Saturday night are top rock n roll band, Starving Dogs, who will reel out the classic “Good Time Boogie” and a wealth of rock favourites from Status Quo and alike. In the Gin Tent on Friday Stuart Cleaver provides a cool set of swing, soul and pop classics whilst on Saturday night, will be the debut ‘Paper Moon’ jazz duo and new young talent: IZZYE not to be missed. ENTRANCE - The entrance fee of £12 on the gate, includes drinks, souvenir festival glass and live music. The festival is located at Jubilee Hall, Ladies Walk. DY3 3UA SPONSORS: This year’s Gold sponsors are Sedgley based N D WALTERS Carpets & Flooring, whilst Silver sponsors Midlands Business Recovery and Willows Dental & Implant Centre will boost the charity event. As company owner, Roy Colman explains: “Our extensive, recently refurbished showroom displays the latest ranges of flooring from leading brands such as Karndean and Amtico and there’s a vast range of top-quality carpets from all of the big names; Cormar, Brockway, Westex, Ulster, Brintons, Kingsmead and Victoria Carpets.” And no matter what budget you’re working to, you’ll find what you’re looking for at Premier. “We have plenty of budget carpets to choose from too, which are particularly popular with private landlords.” 46
As approved Karndean suppliers – and installers – Premier offers a full design and fitting service for the ever-popular flooring. “Clients can book an appointment – free of charge - with one of our surveyors who will visit their home, measure up and provide plenty of help and advice before giving a quotation.” And all of the company’s fitters have been fully trained and completed advanced Karndean fitting courses. Of course, Premier’s fitters are able to install any product sold by the company and can take care of all aspects of the installation process, including sub floor preparation, damp-proof membranes as well as floor-levelling screeds.

Kinver Rotary Club Pupils and staff attending a school in one of the most remote areas of Uganda are soon to have computers and lighting from electricity generated by solar power from panels supplied through the generosity of people in and around Kinver. Proceeds from a jazz evening and a murder mystery event organised
by the Rotary Club of Kinver have been given to the Planting for Hope Uganda charity which supports the school through the untiring efforts of Kate Oakley from Caunsall near Kidderminster. She visited the club to update members and their wives on the work that has been carried out since the club last supported her work. At the end of the evening Vice President Arvind Sharma made a surprise presentation of a cheque for £1,250 from the two events organised by the club.

Many people reach a crossroads at some point in their lives, and this new book records the decision taken by a young man to solve his dilemma, when in November 1970 he set off with two others in a Land Rover on an adventurous drive overland to Australia. To begin with everything seemed to be going smoothly, but events were to take an unexpected turn, and the front and rear covers certainly entice you in to investigate further.

In the days before the internet and mobile phones he was out of touch with friends and family, sometimes for months at a time, which all added to his sometimes alarming experiences. Work gets underway on Compton Care’s Coordination Centre
Photo taken by Express & Star
Following months of planning and preliminary work, construction work is now underway at the much-anticipated Compton Care Coordination Centre. The building, funded in part by a £1.6 million donation from members of the Transport & General Workers Union of the former Goodyear Tyre Plant, will be constructed on the charity’s Compton Hall Headquarters site on Compton Road West. The Coordination Centre, which is estimated to take 12 months to complete, will see the charity be able to coordinate care and support services for local people diagnosed with incurable illnesses from one central location. Compton Care CEO Claire Marshal commented: “This is an incredibly exciting phase of our Compton Care journey with the new build helping us to provide extraordinary care to our patients and families. “The Centre will enable us to coordinate our services from one central point creating a more responsive service for our patients and their families eventually providing 24/7 advice and support for patients, carers and referrers.”
commented: “The Trustees and management committee are absolutely delighted, to see the start of our corner stone project, creating a proud living legacy to all of the ex-members of the fund. “This is the people’s project, supporting Compton Care has been championed by all members since day one. We hope all of the members and their families will feel a sense of pride over the next. 12 months as our dream will become a reality. “The Coordination Centre will leave a long and lasting positive legacy, supporting the people of Wolverhampton and the Black Country. The members of the Benevolent fund, were community spirited , caring people. This project says everything about them. “On behalf of the Trustees and management committee of the fund, I want to thank them and their families. This is your project.” Construction work will be carried out by BAM Construct UK.
“None of this would be possible without the incredible generosity of the members of the Transport & General Workers Union Benevolent Fund. They are funding so much more than a building, they are funding the opportunity for local people who have been diagnosed with an incurable illness to access the extraordinary care, encouragement and support they need in order to live their best life possible. Words cannot express how grateful and appreciative we all are.”
You can keep up to date with the progress of the build with regular news and updates via the Compton Care website: comptoncare.org.uk

Making Life Easier
Appointments Buddy For some though, it’s emotional support that is required during difficult appointments and of course, the Appointment Buddy team are ready and waiting to help.
Everybody needs support from timeto-time - whether it’s emotional, physical or practical - and that’s why Appointment Buddy has designed a personalised chaperone service to meet the individual needs of every customer. As Managing Director, Mandy Catchpole explains: “We believe that everyone has the right to live their best life. We understand that this isn’t always as easy as it sounds and even the simplest of tasks can feel daunting, especially when you’re facing them alone.” That’s why Appointment Buddy is available to support you whatever the task, whether it’s attending a healthcare appointment, a social occasion, going shopping or any other day to day activity. “We understand that if you’re unsteady on your feet getting to and from public transport is a real struggle, not to mention frightening when you’re concerned about falling over.” Of course, if you suffer with poor mobility shopping too is no easy task. 56
“Facing hard situations alone isn’t easy for anyone and having some support makes a real difference.” Wherever you’re going the team will make sure that you get there – and back –safely. “We always make sure that we leave our customers comfortable and with a cup of tea in hand when they get back home.” The company offers a wonderful pampering service too, which enables their clients to enjoy some ‘me time’. “Another branch of our business is called Feeling Fabulous, which specialises in beauty services for mature people.” Clients can enjoy everything from a facial, manicure or pedicure to a relaxing Reiki and Crystal Healing session in the comfort of their own home.
“Our therapists have worked in the care industry for many years and are passionate about what they do because it’s so wonderful to see the difference in clients – both mentally and physically - after they’ve enjoyed a treatment.” And, the benefits of the treatments are far more than just skin deep. “Having companionship and somebody to talk to makes a real difference to how our customers feel, as well as the obviously mood-boosting benefits of being pampered.” The company even offer special treatment for four legged friends too. “Many of our clients have pets and they are such an important part of their lives – they are their companion and friend.” And so, Pet Buddy was established to take care of special pets. “We can do the daily walk, take pets to the vets – with or without their owner – and even dog sit when the owner is away from home.” The Pet Buddy team loves animals and will make sure that your furry friend is well taken care of. Advanced spay procedure
now available at Blacks Vets Minimal recovery time and lower risk of complications
is making Laparoscopic spaying a popular choice. By Dr Kevin Orembo, BVM Cert AVP MRCVS, Blacks Vets.
As your female puppy matures, you may begin to consider whether you would like your pet to breed. This is an important choice both for you and your pet and should be considered carefully, weighing up factors such as your pet’s long-term health, your ability to care for and re-home a litter of offspring and the costs associated with different courses of action. Unless you are certain that you would like your pet to breed, the team here at Blacks Vets recommend spaying as an effective and responsible option for preventing an unwanted pet pregnancy. Spaying is the technical name given to the sterilisation of a female animal 58
by removal of the ovaries. There is currently insufficient medical evidence to support the notion that bitches should give birth before they are spayed. However, we do know that there are many complications and risks that can arise during pregnancy, so it is generally far safer to spay earlier in a pet’s reproductive life. Once the decision to spay has been made, the good news is that there are now options available for how the procedure is performed. Keyhole surgery (technically known as Laparoscopy) may be familiar to us through experiences with our own health, but did you know that this can also be used to successfully treat pets? Laparoscopic surgery is performed with the assistance of a fibre-optic camera (laparoscope) inserted through a small opening in the abdominal wall. This instrument allows veterinary surgeons to view the abdominal organs on an external video monitor and perform surgical procedures without the need for opening large entry points into the body. If your pet weighs over 10kg and is in good health, this option can provide significant benefits.
Reasons To Consider Laparoscopic Spaying For Your Pet • A minimally invasive procedure that requires only tiny, precise cuts meaning less trauma to tissue and less bleeding. • Pets that undergo a laparoscopic spay experience considerably less pain than those having a traditional spay, and usually need less pain medication. • Less risk of wound complications such as swelling, ruptures or infection. • Pets generally experience improved recovery times, when compared to the traditional spay method.
Small incisions used in the procedure
town & village life magazine | september/october 2019
Edina with our Head Nurse and her owner
Case Study Meet beautiful Edina, a 16 month old cross-breed. Edina’s owner decided on laparoscopic spaying as it is a less invasive procedure than a traditional spay. Typically, normal activity can resume after just 48 hours with a laparoscopic spay, compared to a 7-12 day recovery period with a traditional spay. Weighing
between 10-15kg also made Edina an ideal candidate for the procedure, as fat around the ovaries which can be present in larger dogs, makes them harder to remove from the small incision. The operation itself is completed in under 2 hours including General Anesthetic and once concluded, the incisions were sutured, cleaned and dressed. Edina was given a recovery vest to wear which kept her comfortable and stopped her from licking her wounds. She was returned to a cosy kennel within our veterinary hospital, accompanied by the heat pads and blankets that had been used throughout the procedure to keep her warm. Within minutes she was up and about, wagging her tail and her owner was able to take her home after she had been monitored and checked. After a quiet and comfortable day with plenty of cuddles, Edina was back to her usual bouncy self, playing with her toys and enjoying her walks.
Our laparoscopic spays are performed at our accredited veterinary hospital in Dudley, which along with our four other Black Country branches, has been awarded Outstanding for Client Service by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. If you think that laparoscopic spaying could be a good option for your pet, our experienced team of vets, nurses and pet-care advisors, are happy to discuss all options with you to help you make an informed choice.
Happy and fully recovered!

Maximise the potential of your driveway By Andi Way, Garden Designer at Boningale Garden Creations
We focus a lot of our energy and attention on our rear gardens, so why don’t we consider the benefits of a front driveway redesign? Your driveway is often the first impression people have of your home - it’s worth investing time and money into. Let’s start with some practical benefits: Elements of softer landscaping on your driveway can act as drainage aids - soil soaks up rainwater, unlike concrete, and helps reduce localised flooding. Planting traps air pollution too, helping to clear
the air as you walk to your front door. A well designed driveway will take your surrounding landscape into account. The style and form of the driveway should connect to the wider architectural style of your home. This will create cohesion between the interior and exterior parts of your property. Functionality is also a key factor when it comes to driveways – but it’s important to avoid creating a mini car park. Planting helps curate a more inviting space, adding to your property’s kerb appeal.
Selecting the right materials is an integral part of this design process. A good designer will advise you on the pros and cons of different options, and may suggest additional ideas such as decorative borders, lighting or gates. They will also carefully consider your space and suggest what will work best for you and the size and layout of the drive – even a small garden can make a big welcoming statement.
If you need any further inspiration, or want to seek professional advice on giving your driveway a fresh new design or planting scheme, please visit: www.boningale-garden-creations.co.uk or call me on 01902 376500.

Autumn colour
in the garden
Tips are provided by Ann Winwood, Lealans Garden Centre, Wolverhampton excellent value for money- flowering in the spring with the bulbs. Harvest onions and potatoes now – lift up onions and allow to dry out where they’ve been growing if the weather is fine, before storing. Potatoes should be stored in a cool but frost-free environment. Hessian sacks that are available from garden centres are ideal for this purpose.
If we get a nice spell of weather through August and into the beginning of September the flowering season of summer bedding and perennials will continue into early autumn. The range of new varieties of tried and tested herbaceous perennials has expanded quickly over the last few years with the introduction of new foxgloves, delphiniums and Lupins alongside the newer plants of perennial Salvia, Gaura and Heuchera - they make a costeffective alternative to summer bedding. Buying perennials from spring through to autumn will give colour for many months of the year. Summer baskets and tubs should still be in their prime through September and possibly into October if we don’t get any early
64
frosts, but as the nights draw in and the weather gets cooler, they’ll begin to fade. Continue to dead head and feed regularly to encourage a late show of colour. Once your baskets have been emptied why not re-plant for winter colour, there’s plenty to choose from – pansies, violas, polyanthus, heathers, ivies and don’t forget to add a few spring flowering bulbs for added colour. Most garden centres sell smaller sized shrubs that are suitable for tubs and baskets and can then be planted out in the garden next spring. These include gaultherias, leucothoe, skimmias and grasses. Once borders have been cleared of summer bedding, you can re-plant with winter pansies, violas, sweet williams and wallflowers. Hopefully if the weather has been moist we’ll have some of our own fieldgrown wallflowers available from the end of September – they give
Pick early apples and pears as they become ripe. Eat the earlier varieties straight away, storing later ripening ones for later use. Cover autumn fruiting raspberries against birds. The old fruiting canes can be pruned out during the winter months as the autumn varieties fruit on new season’s growth each year. Clean out greenhouses before putting in overwintering plants and insulate with bubble. Check over heaters ready for the first frosts. As you bring in plants to overwinter watch out for vine weevil larvae, especially on fuchsias. If you do see signs of them, drench the compost with one of the chemicals available for their control. Buy prepared hyacinth bulbs for Christmas flowering and plant them in bowls with Bulb Compost by mid-September. Give them a drink and put in a cool, dark place, bringing gradually into the light and warmth once the shoots are approx 3cm high. Overwintering onions, shallots and broad beans will soon be in stock, plant them as soon as you can and you’ll get an early maturing crop next year.

Black Country Firewood Since last updating you, we have completed our new purposebuilt drying facility. The new building will not only help us increase our production but also ensure we can continue to supply the highest quality firewood that our customers have become accustomed to. The building will allow us to dry firewood all year round, designed with maximum ventilation whilst keeping the logs protected from the British weather! Before they are delivered all of our logs pass our quality control inspection, we test the moisture content of each batch to make sure they are dry enough to burn, separate any oversize, remove any dust, and finally check that they are bug and spider free! This process means that we can be fully confident in our end product and allows us to offer all of our customers a full 100% customer satisfaction guarantee. Meaning
if you are not 100% happy with the logs we have delivered we will collect them and offer a full refund. As we have said previously, we encourage all of our customers, both old and new, to come and visit us in our Firewood Centre. Here you can learn about the different options of firewood we have to offer and most importantly, our firewood technicians can provide advice and answer any questions you may have. Finally, Town & Village Life would like to congratulate Mike and his wife on the safe arrival of their daughter, Isla. She’s already been busy helping her Dad with quality control!

THE PERFECT COUNTRY HAVEN AWAY FROM THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE... If you’re looking for the perfect place to stay in the Black Country then you’ll be delighted to find New Wood Farm. Located in Stourton - just outside of Wollaston – New Wood Farm boasts two beautifully renovated self-catering cottages that lie in a tranquil and picturesque countryside setting that’s within easy reach of Stourbridge, Kingswinford and Kinver. The converted farm buildings have been designed to offer guests a cosy ‘home from home’ and have been lovingly restored by owners Linda and Mick Thornton, who were keen to retain their original character whilst creating a stylish and modern interior. Welcoming visitors from all over the world, the couple have long been ensuring that their guests enjoy a wonderful stay. As Linda explains: “We have been hosting the barn for over 20 years and have had guests stay with us from as far away as Australia and America, as well as from all over the UK. We also have a lot of local people stay with us too.” Holiday makers, business people, those visiting relatives and local people needing a place to stay in between a house move, renovation works or even to recuperate after surgery - have all enjoyed what New Wood has to offer. “There are plenty of different reasons why guests choose to stay with us at New Wood but we hope that the reason they return time and time again is
because of the enjoyable stay they’ve had.” The Barn sleeps four people and has two bathrooms and The Stable provides accommodation for two. “The Barn and The Stable both benefit from a wood burning stove, comfy leather sofas and a large TV.” There’s also parking available for up to three cars and free WIFI. “Our gates open onto a bridle path that leads down to the Staffordshire and Worcestershire canal, with no passing traffic which is great for walkers and cyclists.” Linda and Mick have worked hard to pay attention to those little details that make all the difference; there are flower boxes and planters outside the cottages, as well as a very unique addition in The Barn. “We’ve got a Wurlitzer juke box containing many vinyl records from the 1960’s and 1970’s in The Barn that many of our guests love,” adds Linda. With so much to offer, it’s no surprise that guests at New Wood Farm can’t wait to book their next stay.

DYSLE X IA
AND VISION Olha Lac BSc (Hons) Dip ScV M.ASvP (Director Optometrist at Taylor Biddle Opticians)
Award winning Schoolvision practitioner Q. What is dyslexia? A. The word ‘dyslexia’ comes from the Greek and means ‘difficulty with words’. It primarily affects the skills involved in accurate and fluent reading and spelling. It is believed to be one of the most common learning difficulties although many dyslexics are very bright and often have strong visual, creative and problem-solving skills. Many famous and successful people are known to be dyslexic. Q. What is Visual Stress? A. Simply explained, Visual Stress (also known as Visual Dyslexia or Irlen Syndrome) is a sensitivity to visual patterns, particularly stripes. It can occur when a white background appears to interfere with lines of black print and causes difficulties with visual processing of the reading content. Q. Is Visual Stress the same as Dyslexia? A. Visual stress is not the same as Dyslexia, but is more common in those who are dyslexic and can occur despite normal vision. It is thought that it affects 12% of the population and 65% of dyslexics. Many dyslexic people are sensitive to the glare of white backgrounds on a page, white board or computer screen. This can make the reading of text much more difficult. Q. What are the symptoms of Visual Stress?
reading content and are observed to fidget, move books around, skip words and lines and often rub their eyes and blink frequently. Frustration and low self-esteem can occur in children who are underachieving at school due to visual stress, therefore early diagnosis is essential. The longer it takes to identify and remedy visual stress, the greater the loss of confidence that can result. Q. My child has difficulty reading but I was told that his vision is normal? A. It is important to remember that normal sight may not necessarily be synonymous with normal vision. Reading is a complex task and involves many aspects. Most recent studies found that people with reading difficulties, such as dyslexia, are more likely to have unstable binocular vision at near distance, which means that their eyes have to work harder than usual to maintain alignment and tracking whilst reading and writing. Some of the conventional tests used in routine eye examination may not show this instability in children. I have used
SCHOOLVISION method for over six years with great success as its battery of tests are very accurate and are specifically designed for testing children. The results are confirmed with Clinical Eye Tracker which shows the stability of eye movement with and without the tint. Q. Is there a cure for visual stress? A. There is no “cure”, but visual stress can be reduced or eliminated by the use of coloured lenses worn in spectacles. These are prescribed following Colorimetry assessment when the precise tint is selected with the aid of INTUITIVE COLORIMETER, which produces thousands of colour combinations. The success rate in my practice is around 80%. Degree of improvement differssome individuals reach up to 150% increase in speed of reading, some about 20% due to other non-visual learning difficulties. Very often children move up several reading levels within a few weeks. Visual Stress screening cost £35. Please enquire for further information.
A. Sufferers may report movement and blurring of the text. Letters can appear to reverse or change shape. Halos, colours or patterns, sometimes described as “rivers” or “worms”. Red, sore eyes and headaches are also frequent complaints. These individuals often have poor comprehension of the 92

The holy grail of skincare PROFHILO IS AN INJECTABLE SKIN RE-MODELLING TREATMENT for practically anyone, men and women, from 30 years old and with no upper age limit. Profhilo isn’t just effective in the treatment of wrinkles and ageing skin – it also helps with radiance and hydration. The results are fantastic, with many of our clients experiencing increased firmness, elasticity and an overall improved quality of their skin. Results can be visible for up to six months post-treatment, However, this does depend upon the degree of correction required, your age and lifestyle.
Profhilo will bioremodel your face, neck, arms and hands.
Have you heard of Profhilo? It’s the new innovative approach to anti-ageing and it’s available right now at Symétrie. Profhilo is a “bio-remodeller” not a dermal filler, it is a hyaluronic acid gel, one of the latest innovations to treat skin laxity. It creates neocollagenesis, a process that stimulates the collagen receptors in the skin. This is the holy grail of cosmetic medicine because as we age, our collagen supplies dwindle, causing sag and wrinkles. Profhilo also enhances elastin production, the stuff that gives skin its spring and helps it to stay hydrated. The result? More youthful-looking skin texture all round.
Profhilo will remodel your look in 5 minutes. Profhilo is an effective and natural looking non-surgical facial treatment that helps slow the facial ageing process by addressing skin laxity, filling lines and smoothing wrinkles. Made of 100% pure Hyaluronic Acid, it nourishes dermal cells and restores the firmness of the skin. 94
This treatment will hydrate your skin from the inside out. Profhilo uses patented technologies engineered for ‘skin remodelling’. It effectively stimulates production of both your natural collagen and elastin to renew your skin from within creating plumped and firmed up skin.

Treatment for skin laxity in the arms
As we age, the skin’s ability to produce collagen decreases, Profhilo is strategically injected at key points to rejuvenate the skin’s own collagen-making abilities. can be formed, new skin cells generated and the structure of the dermis, the lower level of the skin, enhanced. This natural process takes time, so it can take up to six weeks before you see significant results – although the process will continue over the following months and several treatments are usually required. The results are not only smoother, brighter rejuvenated skin, but it can also lead to an improvement in the appearance of acne scars and pigmentation. Treatments tend to last around 20 minutes. You should expect your overall appointment to last around 40 minutes – so it can even be done in your lunch hour!
We all have those bugbears that affect our confidence, whether it’s fine lines around the eyes, a dull complexion or maybe acne scars or pigmentation. What we all want is to be able to tackle those issues safely, without too much discomfort or downtime, and without the worry of the results looking unnatural and obvious. What can I do
about my Varicose Veins? The normal function of leg veins is to carry blood back to the heart. During walking the calf muscle acts as a pump, squeezing the veins and forcing blood back to the heart.
2.
3.
To prevent blood from flowing in the wrong direction, veins have valves. If the valves fail, blood flows back down the leg. This results in veins enlarging and becoming varicose. Whilst there are a number of factors that are outside of your control (age, sex and genetics) there are a number of things that you can do to help prevent varicose veins or to minimise the symptoms from them. 1.
Keep active: Regular exercise helps pump blood out of the leg and reduces the congestion in the veins, particularly if your job involves sitting or standing still for long periods.

Halfpenny Green Wine Estate is a hive of activity at all times, but particularly today. Cars packed full of exuberant visitors stream up and down the long driveway, just off Tom Lane, Bobbington: a relentless flow of traffic that is challenging to negotiate but – oh so – worth it, because when you arrive at the complex the atmosphere is buzzing with the kind of energy that only a star-studded local attraction can generate.
Halfpenny Green Wine Estate, Bobbington By Rob Taylor
Bustling about us, when my partner Nicola and I arrive, is a throng of people, all heading in different directions: some make no bones about the fact that they are there solely to browse the vast range of award-winning wines in the three-storey shop; for others, relaxation with a drink in the tea room is the order of the day. I’m sure many more are here to check out the on-site craft centre – which is home to over fifteen individual businesses, including a Blacksmith and a zoo. And I bet a lucky few are here to do what I’d really like to be doing myself: trying out the brand new Balcony Tapas menu at the newly-opened Wine Loft Balcony. The idea of shooting the breeze outdoors while sipping at a glass of home-grown wine (or anything from the extensive G & T menu), overlooking the splendid surrounding countryside, and nibbling on accompanying, freshly-prepared Tapas choices from the Deli counter, such as ‘Sun Dried Tomato Tapenade, Mozzarella and Focaccia sticks’ and ‘Chargrilled Marinated Peppers’ (£3.50 each or 3 for £10) is right up my alley. But, oh well, duty calls, another day perhaps… For us, it is lunch in the restaurant, so we dive left after entering through the conservatory atrium and are seated beside expansive windows, which overlook the vines. It is a choice table and one that allows us to absorb the sights, smells and sounds of a generouslysized and tastefully decorated dining space. It’s 12.30pm and the room is already nearly at capacity. Immediately we’re offered drinks from the ample menu. Something nonalcoholic may seem rather incongruous and yet that’s my preference and I’m not short on choice. A medium-sized glass of veryappropriately-English Rosé (£3.50) tickles Nicola’s fancy, its blend of summer fruits befit the occasion; I’m a firm believer that the vineyards is a place best served by summer. After but a sip, a waitress arrives to take note of our starters. This is to be the beginning of a meal that is defined by good service. Clearly Halfpenny Green’s popularity has drilled its staff into a well-oiled machine, performing at optimum levels when others

would be flagging under pressure. We elect to have ‘Smoked Salmon on Crisp Bread with Dill & Lemon Cream Cheese’ (£5) and ‘Chargrilled Pork Belly and Salsa Verde’ (£5). We both find them to be well-sized and rich with well-judged flavour combinations. I take down the entirety of the salmon, such is my fondness for the stuff, and I enjoy it very much, especially when coupled with the crunch of the bread and the cool of the dill-infused cheese. Nicola dominates the pork, allowing only a morsel for me to try, but even when making do with such a meagre portion I can still speak to the singular taste and expert cooking method used. A brief pause allows us to soak up another drink each and reflect upon the room. Almost every table is now in use as diverse groups of diners revel in the friendly atmosphere. I watch staff members interact with some in a way that’s telltale of regular visits. And I can see why people want to return again and again because there is a richness of variety here that’s hard to find elsewhere: you can dine in the formal restaurant where we are or lounge in the more informal atrium or even retreat to outside benches. And when the weather is as hospitable as it is today, I can make a strong case for each option. Arriving promptly but not hurriedly are the main courses: I – because I’m determined to sample a British staple – go for ‘Battered Fish and Chips Hand Cut Chips, Crushed Peas and Homemade Tartar Sauce’ (£12.95) and Nicola chooses – rather more adventurously – ‘Indian Spiced Marinated Chicken, Coriander and Red Onion Braised Rice, Sweet Potato Pakora, Curried Butternut Squash Velouté and Coriander Oil’ (£12.95). Both dishes are generous servings and excite the senses. My haddock is stellar and the homemade tartar sauce delights my palate with its subtleties. So good that it should really be bottled and put on sale. I know Nicola is impressed with her choice because next to nothing remains of it, the greatest compliment anyone could pay. I will admit that I left one of two peas behind but in my defence I had overdone it somewhat on the masterfully meaty chips. Inevitably, then comes the time-honoured refrain: “have you got room for dessert?” Happily we have, but only just. I manage to squeeze in a rather delicious ‘Treacle Tart with Berry Coulis’ (£6.25) and for Nicola, an excruciatingly indulgent ‘Banana Split Sundae’ (£6.25). How I wish I had room for it myself as I ogle it from across the table. But, that’s what return trips are all about – and I’m sure we’ll be visiting again soon, I just need to remember to leave room for dessert. And to try the Balcony Tapas menu. Welcome to the Roe Deer
Sitting on the outskirts of Wordsley, Stourbridge, the Roe Deer was once a family home called Lawnswood House. Built during the reign of Kind George III in 1813 to 1816 it contains many beautiful attributes of the Regency style. Wonderful high ceilings and huge casement windows that flood the rooms with natural light, a grand staircase and rooms to squirrel away in next to stunning fireplaces or overlooking the historic garden. e building lends itself beautifully as a pub and now has a large bar at the heart of the building, packed with an ever-growing collection of gins and malts, an array of ever-changing local ales and a fine wine collection that complements our daily menu. Outside there is a stone terrace to the front, which enjoys sunsets framed by the grand old trees, and views out across the lawn and the fields beyond. Upstairs, enjoying the same views you will find a private dining room which will comfortably seat 14, perfect for larger family gathering or smaller business meeting. Our menus have their roots in modern British cooking, with a hint of the more exotic about them. You will always find some hearty pub classics alongside some lighter lunchtime options. ey change often to reflect the seasons and are loaded each morning onto our website so you may whet your appetite before you even arrive. Jon and the team are on hand to welcome you, your family and friends and even your dog. We hope to see you soon.

Yet another plentiful harvest at
Halfpenny Green Wi n e E s t a t e After their biggest harvest on record in 2018, Halfpenny Green Wine Estate wait anxiously to see what grape yield their 2019 harvest will produce!
Harvesting times vary every year, taking place normally around midSeptember, but running as late as November, if temperatures have not been high enough during the summer months. Fortunately, due to dry, warm and settled conditions this summer, Halfpenny Green are expecting another excellent year, with an abundance of ripe grapes waiting to be turned into their 2019 vintage. For the Wine Estate’s winemakers, harvest means around five weeks of intense labour, working well into the night, seven days a week, whilst in the background, the grapes are being destalked, pressed and prepared for the fermentation process. Just as harvest comes to an end and the leaves on the once flourishing vines begin to turn brown, wither and drop in their continuous cycle, a festive feel
swathes the Wine Estate; with dark evenings, a nip in the air and log-burners a blazing, the unavoidable Christmas rush looms. What better place though, to enjoy a little bit of Christmas shopping, with the Wine Estate’s shop, home to their own range of thirteen award-winning English wines. Here you will also find a wide range of gifts, perfect for the fast-approaching festive season; from personalised bottles of wine to custom boxes of chocolates or bespoke-made gift hampers. Along with their wine selection in the Wine Loft, you will find an awe-inspiring range of over one hundred British Gins, many
artisan- produced, to tempt all those gin-lovers out there. The site is also home to a Craft Centre, featuring fifteen independent businesses, perfect if you’re looking to have a gift commissioned, or if you’re searching for something a little different for that ‘awkward to buy for’ person in your life! The Centre also incorporates Wild Zoological Park, home to a range of animals from all over the world, with VIP experiences available and the largest mixed species bird show finale in the UK. Once your Christmas shopping is done, why not indulge yourself in the Restaurant, which will be serving up all the old favourites throughout the December period, with their traditional Christmas Fayre Menu, available to book now. With each meal cooked fresh to order by their team of chefs, from the classic Christmas Roast to delicious desserts, there is a festive offering to satisfy any appetite. So, it seems, Halfpenny Green Wine Estate, nestled in beautiful South Staffordshire countryside, is the perfect destination for all the family this autumn! meandering driveway leads us to a splendid Regencystyle building, formerly Lawnswood House but today Brunning and Price’s, The Roe Deer pub. Resplendent in white and situated amid mature trees and carefully-manicured gardens, which overlook stunning countryside, this outstanding property is the latest from the pubrestaurant owners, who specialise in restoring old buildings and now have a portfolio of nearly 70 nationwide.
Situated in Wordsley, just off the A449 Kidderminster to Wolverhampton Road, the building was last renovated in 1924, after being built in 1813 for iron manufacturer Edward Foley and his family. Owned by the Marsh family (half of well-known sausage makers, Marsh & Baxter) for over 50 years, it was sold in 2015 with an eye to being converted into a public house. And what a conversion it has been! The Roe Deer dazzles from the outset: I fail to see how with such an amazing canvas By Rob Taylor

on which to work, anything except a complete success can be possible. But, there’s still a lot to come, so I won’t get too carried away yet.
We arrive to dine late on a warm Monday evening. The pub is a hive of activity, overrun with eager guests, hungry to see what has become of the local landmark. Car parking is ample – and it needs to be, such has been the popularity of the venue since it opened in June this year. Always keen to snag a plum assignment for such an esteemed organ as this, I happily put on my food critic’s hat and, with my partner Nicola, wander towards the imposing façade. Inside, the visual feast continues. We walk through a bar area and find the interior to be both sympathetic to the building’s past and traditional in style, with open fires, wooden floors, bookcases, old furniture and plants. With corniced, high-ceilings and rooms flooded with light from floor-to-ceiling windows it is the perfect environment in which to sample cask ales, freshly-cooked food, a sizeable wine list, as well as many, many malt whiskies and gins. Nicola kicks things off with ‘Pimms and Lemonade - served with strawberries, orange and cucumber’ (£5.75) from the ‘While you wait…’ section of the generous menu. We don’t have to wait long for it to arrive, nor do we have to linger long on the pages in front of us before we decide on our selection for the evening. I opt for ‘Smoked salmon with spiced avocado purée, shaved fennel and radish’ (£7.95) and Nicola selects
town & village life magazine | september/october 2019
‘Pork chipolatas with honey and mustard’ (£4.75). Conversation then turns to why the pub is called The Roe Deer. A quick ‘Google’ puts us right, as Mary Willcock, Managing Director of Brunning and Price, explains: “We usually like to use the name of the building, but we understand there is another ‘Lawnswood’ close by, so we thought we would rechristen the building in honour of the family of Roe deer that we often see grazing within the walled garden. We hope that they continue to visit the pub when we re-open.” Judging by the throng of people in attendance tonight, I doubt deer will be seen for some time, but I do read with interest about the pub’s newly-added Garden Room and its private dining room that comfortably seats 14 people. I even wander upstairs to have a look, returning just in time to meet our genial waitress Chloe, as she delivers our starters. Nicola receives five plump sausages drizzled with lashings of sticky goodness and has nothing but praise for them. Similarly, my salmon is delicious when mated with avocado purée. Service tonight is impeccable and the vibe is cosy and informal, despite the classical surroundings. It’s easy to see why this place is as busy as it is. My best advice is to book ahead. Now to the mains and I have ‘Braised shoulder of lamb with minted potato cake and rosemary gravy’ (£17.95) and, for Nicola, ‘7oz fillet steak with
www.townandvillagelifemag.co.uk
Portobello mushrooms, peppercorn sauce, tomato and chips’ (£26.95). After an appropriate rest the two appetising dishes emerge from Head Chef Luke Wilcox’s kitchen. Both plates scintillate and beg for speedy dispatch. I tuck in with renewed vigour, effortlessly separating bone from tender flesh and devouring every last morsel. The seasonal vegetables consist of kale and carrots and – after adding a dash of mint sauce – my main meal is a genuine triumph. I know from Nicola’s body language that the same is true of her meal. Tip-top food as befits this superb location. The best is saved to last however as dessert squeaks in to steal the show: ‘Crème brûlée with shortbread biscuits’ (£6.25) and ‘Triple chocolate brownie with chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream’ (£6.45). My brownie is a fantastically tasty indulgence on which to finish, it oozes decadence and in itself is enough to demand a return visit to The Roe Deer. Nicola’s choice goes down well also. All that’s left to do is to ease ourselves away from the dining table and out into the outdoor seating area to catch a dying sunset over the rolling countryside. This must be almost exactly why this property was built right here on this spot, for splendour such as this. I can’t help thinking to myself: how fortunate over the last two hundred years the few have been, and how fortunate we all are now to be able to visit.
And visit you must.

Invictus Education Trust Invictus Education Trust was created in March 2015 by a group of like-minded schools: Crestwood, Ellowes Hall Sports College, Kinver High and Wombourne High School. Two schools have since joined us, Leasowes High School in Autumn 2016 and Pedmore High School in September 2018, further strengthening an already thriving trust.
What is a culture?
Where we differ from other multi academy trusts is our intention to collaborate, across our schools, in every aspect. In the past 5 years, our students have benefitted from this collaboration through joint learning experiences, trust wide enrichment and access to the incredible facilities within our estate. Our innovative 6th form regularly appears at the top of league tables and leader boards for progress, our 6th form spans across all 6 campuses with students transported, free of charge via our fleet of minibuses
“The feeling or climate conveyed without a word being spoken”.
Our ‘Invictus Subject Directors’ model enables one expert to lead the curriculum across our 6 schools, ensuring consistency in learning and a wider support network for our teaching teams. Other areas of focus for our trust are ensuring that our students enjoy unique opportunities and elite experiences. To do this we appointed a director of performing arts and director of sport.
We are to be locally based, but nationally important.
The next phase for us, in terms of a collaboration, is the launch of the ‘Invictus Culture’. The Invictus Culture has seen all of our schools, and 6th form, adopt a shared vision, mission and set of values.
Invictus Vision Our aspiration, what our schools and Trust will look like in the future Our communities will have access to an outstanding education. Our schools and 6th form cater for the social, economic and cultural diversity that our country is comprised of and deliver opportunities and experiences that celebrate that diversity.
Invictus Mission A formal summary of what we do and why we do it We exist to provide our schools with the resources to offer independent minded education to their communities. Our academic focus is on progress. We achieve this with exceptional teaching delivered by outstanding teachers, who are supported by an outstanding team. We provide our students with unique opportunities and elite
experiences allowing them to thrive in whatever they pursue. Invictus Values Our principles and standards of behaviour Every day, in every way, our students come first Our first and most important value. Anything is possible We focus on the challenge to identify it; our energy is spent finding a solution. Accountability If it is to be, it is to be me. Seek and seize opportunities We aim to deliver ‘WOW’ through opportunities and experiences Focus on relationships and all else will follow Open, honest and empathic relationships with clear and simple communication are the foundations of our Trust. Start with the end in mind We identify our aspiration and put processes in place to exceed expectations. We celebrate our progress throughout the journey. Think collaboratively We always ask ourselves; can we include more students, more of our team or more of our schools in everything we do? Our culture is embraced by EVERYONE within the organisation, from students to CEO, and everyone in between, come and see for yourself at our open evenings!

While for others, the thought of leaving your child in someone else’s care can seem overwhelming. The point is we are all different and react in different ways – so the type of childcare you prefer will also vary. The decision can feel daunting as it is so important to think that you have found the right care for your child while you are at work. Ideally, you need to feel that whichever option you choose you are secure in the knowledge that your child will be cared for, meeting all your child’s day-to-day needs and giving you peace of mind for you knowing your child is happy and secure. You’ll also want your child to learn and have
fun in the same way as they would if they were at home with you. There are as many childcare providers as there are reactions to going back to work. So finding the right one for you and your child is essential to you feeling in control when you go back to work. The key here is preparation. Take time, as far ahead as during your pregnancy to visit a range of providers and types of provider. This will help you decide early the kind of childcare you feel at ease with. So the message is, look sooner rather than later and book early!
Here at Newbridge Preparatory School, children are accepted from the September following their second birthday into our Tots Room. They then move into our Nursery in the September following their third birthday. Many parents put their child’s name down from birth, and some even before! We have extensive waiting lists, so the sooner you register, the more choice you will have of sessions and the more likely you will be guaranteed a place in our Reception Class. Before registering with us, parents are encouraged to make an appointment for a personal tour. Come and visit us to see our setting and meet our staff. There is nothing better than to see an edu-care setting like ours in full flow to truly appreciate the family atmosphere we have here at Newbridge. Every day is special for us, so there is no need for us to put on a special open day! Just ring our Admissions Registrar, Annabelle Addison, on 01902 751088 or email aaddison@newbridgeprepschool. org.uk for further information.

Education
and Schooling
by David Williams – Headmaster of Tettenhall College
How much time did your child or grandchild spend outside in the recent summer holidays? Although not wanting to delve again into the well-trodden debate about the detrimental effect of screen time on the development of young people, a worrying survey (conducted by detergent company Persil) recently revealed that about 75% of children play outside for less than an hour a day. The survey confirmed that children are spending less and less time playing in the woods, fields, and parks with most parents involved in the survey agreeing that their children spend less time outside than they did in their youth. What is even more disconcerting is that on this evidence prison inmates spend about as much time outdoors as young children-one hour being the UN guideline for prisoners. The benefits of fresh air and outside play are myriad and a part of a child’s play is getting to be messy, fun, and creative developing their social skills as a result as well as laying the foundations for an active and healthy lifestyle that is essential throughout life. The loss of that experience is detrimental for children with obesity and stress being some of the results as well as the lack of a simple daily opportunity to “let off 116
steam”. Getting plenty of outdoor exercise during formative years also has an effect on maintaining health and fitness levels and vitamin D is an essential vitamin produced when in the sun, not indoors. Less well-documented are the effects on eyesight. Being in front of a screen only requires the use of a limited range of eye movement whereas being outside helps improve vision because of the varying distances of trees and objects. The high incidence of myopia (nearsightedness) across East Asia, afflicting some 80-90% of 18-yearolds in urban areas of Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan has been attributed to insufficient time spent outdoors due to excessive screen use as well as the large number of hours studying and reading often required by the education systems in these countries. Whilst pollution and lack of green space can be a factor in Asian cities, closer to home it is often the fear of allowing children to play outside through fear of traffic, predatory adults or anti-social behaviour and crime. The outside play of yesteryear has seemingly disappeared in favour of parentally organised play dates and the necessity to join clubs to replace the impromptu football or cricket matches that used to take place in parks or on estates or village greens. This of course requires time, organisation and
often money to facilitate although it must be stated that the availability of coaching and regular sessions in sports clubs for children of all ages has vastly improved. Our own summer camp run during the last holiday was a resounding success and local primary school links are being established to give more local children experience of specialist coaching. In this context schools must do their part in encouraging an outdoor life not only in adequate curriculum time given to sport and competitive fixtures but with Forest School programmes for primary children and the promotion of outdoor education through schemes such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award. The lesserknown National Citizen Service is an excellent government programme for 15 to 17 year olds that for under £50 for a three or four week programme includes a week’s residential at an outdoor centre. I am pleased that Tettenhall College offers the opportunity for all the above with a belief that an active body also leads to an active mind. Equally, we wish to give young people the exposure to activities that will be continued later in life, get them off the couch and build habits that will last a lifetime. I also need to check how much time I spent outside in the last week… You can follow David on Twitter @tettcoll_head

PAYCARE IN THE COMMUNITY
Paycare Marks
30 years on GeorGe street Project GIVE and the Sickle Cell & Thalassaemia Support Project. Kevin added: “I’ve been at the helm of Paycare since 2013 and as Operations Director for four years before that, and I can honestly say it’s been the most rewarding role of my entire career. Not only do we make a genuine difference to the health and wellbeing of so many across the region and beyond, but we’re in the incredibly fortunate position to have a team which shares our vision and are committed to giving back to the communities that we all serve. Here’s to another 30 years!”
It’s been 30 years since Paycare moved from its former headquarters at Alan House to the four storey Paycare House – a landmark anniversary for the team, some of whom were there on the day of the move. Kevin Rogers said: “We’re so proud to call Wolverhampton our home and although we date right back to 1874, we’ve seen some of the biggest developments within Paycare over the last three decades. “We rebranded from Patients Aid Association to Paycare in 2005, and we were the first Health Cash Plan provider in the UK to offer BACS as a payment method in 1994 – a move which made it much more accessible and easier for our Policyholders to use our services.”
On 8th June 1989, Paycare House was officially unveiled by Wolverhampton Wanderers legend Billy Wright CBE. Saranjit Nagra, Compliance Manager of Paycare, was pregnant at the time with her daughter, who has just celebrated her 30th birthday. The leadership team at Paycare has continued to push boundaries and lead by example with charitable giving, with the CEO of the firm in 1999 – who preceded Kevin – taking part in an abseil down Paycare House to raise funds for Derby Mountain Charity, and Kevin himself taking part in a stand-up comedy gig for Stand Up to Cancer.

The Paycare team was proud to be a Gold Sponsor of the Midlands Air Ambulance Recognition Awards 2019 on 5th July, which saw many individuals across the region praised for their continued support of the charity. This year’s awards ceremony will fund an amazing 34 lifesaving air ambulance missions and 31 critical car missions. TV personality Will Mellor and Heart radio presenter Ed James co-hosted, with many famous faces, including the legendary Paul Chuckle, author Sally Bee, as well as Gogglebox stars Pete and Sophie Sandiford, presenting awards on the night. Anthony Burns, Commercial Director of Paycare, explained: “We were delighted to support the event again this year and it

was incredibly touching to learn about the people who go above and beyond to support the charity, as well as about the life-changing work it carries out every single day. “We were also proud to see our sponsored Community Fundraising Award presented to Housing 21 — Goldfield Court living facility, which has generated over £10,000 by fundraising and collecting clothing, furniture and other items for Midlands Air Ambulance charity shops. “We’d like to congratulate all of the winners, but to also say huge thanks to the many inspiring individuals and companies who continue to support the charity’s vital work.”
counties as well as supporting the surrounding regions, responding to over 2,000 calls a year. But it receives no funding from the Government or the National Lottery, meaning they rely solely on public donations to the tune of £9m to keep the service going each year. Earlier this year, Paycare’s own Emily Glew took part in the charity’s Amazon Trek alongside a team of 11 volunteers — with the combined £68,000 raised enough to fund 27 air ambulance missions.

Peugeot 508 GT
By Rob Taylor
This is a sensational car. I can speak to this with absolutely no equivocation because I’ve just spent a week away with it on the English Riviera. Yet despite the splendid weather and the admiring glances that have been thrown the 508’s way from passers by, something has been eating away at me: far too few people will ever allow themselves to drive and enjoy this car. I fear that right now the cult of the SUV (as well as the myriad subSUV/ Crossover derivations) exerts more pull on motorists than the moon that’s currently dragging in the lapping Torquay-waters, wetting my Albino-white feet. It is more seductive than Charles Manson in his prime, more intoxicating than the allure of ice-cold cider on a hot summer evening. As such this trend has stolen away buyers from the traditional saloon (or ‘D-class’ segment as Peugeot refers to it; it also calls the 508 a ‘Fastback’, which I rather like), buyers who would traditionally get to fall in love with the 508 GT (‘GT’ is a trim level, one down from ‘First Edition’) as I have. All of this makes me a little sad. Devilishly attractive – especially in black – and with low coupé lines 128
allied to a practical number of five doors, the 508 GT manages to walk the line between style and function. And this brings me to lament yet again: Peugeot expects diesels to make up most of the sales, so this fiery four-pot petrol will be left in the wilderness as well. For Peugeot geeks among you, this particular 508 GT calls to mind the Peugeot 405 Mi16 in that it is, when fitted with the 1.6 litre turbocharged 222bhp petrol I have here, a bit of a Q-car in a world of plain, homogenised German junior-executive saloons. It’s quick (0-60mph in 7.4 seconds); but not in a shouty, “look-at-me” way – and I love that. The steering weights-up nicely at speed, is very responsive and the 508 handles its mass well, taking apart sinuous bends with aplomb. In whichever ‘Driver Mode’ you go for, you’ll always be comfortable (especially in ‘Comfort’-mode, obviously) on all but the most brutal roads (the 19” alloys do come at some cost) as the 508 rides well, cocooning the driver from wind and road noise, ushering in a new age of motoring satisfaction. In this respect it really does deserve its ‘GT’ tag. And for the money, it also promises to see you sitting in and around more luxury and tech than anything Teutonic. The interior is of tip-top quality and the dash is deliciously tactile. A nice HD central touchscreen runs Peugeot’s
i-Cockpit. It’s all been well thought out and you could lose hours of your life in here, customising into infinity. In Yankee parlance this 508 has “everything on it.” For just over £1000 you can even spec ‘Night Vision’. I’ve driven vehicles costing twice the sub-£40k this costs that had much, much less. So as I waft back up the M5 on the hottest day of 2019 in airconditioned luxury, my leatherclad throne performing myriad massage-functions along the way, I savour every minute. The eightspeed automatic transmission is a willing and able companion, never shirking or straining. At no time do I feel tired or stressed at the wheel as I peel off the miles. Not even when our motorwaymonitoring overlords elect to close a junction – redirecting all three lanes on the north-bound carriageway through hamlets and badly-drawn horse tracks with insouciance similar to the Soviet Union’s response to Chernobyl in 1986 – do I care. I simply see it as a way to get better acquainted with this luxury land-cruiser. And I would urge you to do so too, forget “SUVs” and “Crossovers”, drive a car that’s not following a trend but cutting its own path. They won’t be making them forever.
