Joy: Is it always at night? NB: Actually some clients (just under 27%) clench during the day, while driving or on their computers. Joy: So what can we do to prevent it? NB: Well the first issue is identifying the problem and allowing our clients to talk about the stresses that lead them to us. The next bit is more complex; some of our clients have had mouth guards made which protect the teeth, but research shows us that while these may help the teeth, they can actually increase the muscular activity making pain and tension worse. So we use a combination of treatments bespoke to our clients’ needs that usually involves an NTI device (a small clip-on device clinically proven to reduce muscular activity).

Joy: What have you noticed? NB: Well bruxism or tooth grinding is something we’re dealing with a lot more these days, and it’s becoming an increasing problem.

Or if our client is clenching in the day we use custom-made invisible comfortable earplugs that ease the symptoms along with medicinal Botox and sometimes acupuncture. The Botox can also reduce one of the other symptoms which is enlarged masseter muscles.

Joy: What kind of symptoms are your clients experiencing? NB: Symptoms vary from client to client. Headaches are common, as is neck stiffness, clicky jaw joints or lock jaw and migraines happen a lot too. Joy: What’s happening? NB: Well in order to answer that we need to understand how the brain works. Our brains are pretty amazing, they can cope with most things we throw at them. But really, what they were designed for was to wake up at sunrise and shut down slowly over sunset, but now the world is very different. When we go to bed our brains haven’t had time to shut down and relax, so our bodies sleep but our brains are still active and thus our brain is still full of electrical activity which leaks into the nearest muscles it can find; neck muscles, forehead and jaw muscles. The muscles either clench hard or they relax and clench leading to the grinding or bruxism. Joy: So what’s causing it? NB: In a word, stress and exposure to blue light from screens (like mobile devices and televisions) fool our bodies into thinking it is bright sunshine, thus not giving our brain down time to process them before we pass out in bed. Sometimes our brains have so much going on, we wake up multiple times in the night. Joy: Who is most effected? NB: We find clients who come to see us fit into two main categories, by far the most common is the more caring clients such as teachers, nurses and home carers and full time mothers. These lovely individuals have a hard time saying no to people, so they have a lot on. The other type of client are usually fairly high flying business owners or company directors taking on more and more, usually answering emails or calls into the evenings. The grinding and pain is usually a medium to late warning sign that serious problems are not far away.

Joy: Does it work? NB: Our clients tell us the results are life changing. Some of our clients have been suffering with crippling headaches and migraines for years. Most of them have posted videos on our website and Facebook page or given us written testimonials.

Welcome to your Christmas edition of Wolverhampton West. It really does seem as if there’s a merry mischiefmaker somewhere messing about with the passing years, because it feels like merely minutes since I last welcomed you all to what has been a stellar 2019.

Mr Mischief – some of you may call him Dominic Cummings – is at it too with the interminable Brexit debacle? Will we ever see an end? Will any of us even out-live it? Whatever you do, dear readers, don’t write in with your forecasts, we’ve had enough, and now, despite the trying times that are upon us we must turn our attention towards the light (this is almost turning into a Sunday sermon, my apologies!). I refuse to let that and this gloomy Sunday afternoon dampen my spirits and you shouldn’t either! It’s got me in reflective mood, so do indulge me in this Christmas wish… Another year in the region is another reason for me to grow fonder still of all that we hold dear here in the Midlands, what is afforded to us on our doorstep in Wolverhampton, whether in cloud and cold or sun and shine. So, starting right here in these very pages, the last you’ll hold before we get into another Christmas blur, let’s get stuck into the thickend of another jumbo edition. Our departing columnist and soonto-be former Tettenhall College Headmaster, David Williams, said it best in his closing lines recently: “Wolverhampton is a proper city with all that comes with it; some issues but equally a vibrant place with a sense of pride, especially reflected in the football team that lies at its heart and that has visibly lifted it in the last couple of years.” Ahh, yes, the footie: sore subject for some – in our household at least, WWFC (Gisella) versus WBA (yours truly), it’s a little more even-steven than it was last season – but sport is always a great mood-booster for the masses. And we did have a summer full of sporting riches, at least. 06

So now, time to get down to business: our advertisers have got some amazing Christmas gift ideas in store for you. as there is a fair chance the boot will be on the other foot before long! But it’s lovely while it lasts! Sadly, I write this before the Brexit witching hour but you will read it after it’s all over. I can just hope that whatever outcome is reached, it is with the best interests of the country at heart and not personal egos or entrenched positions taking the fore. Whatever has happened I think that we will be hearing about B….t for many more years. Whoever thought to patent that name would have made a fortune!

We are frequently asked whether it is better to sell first and then buy or buy first and then sell. It really depends on the financial position of the person asking. If they can fund the purchase without selling then it doesn’t matter but when a prior sale is necessary the position becomes clearer. Two incidents recently highlight the problem. Firstly we started to market a substantial period property which created considerable interest and about six viewings. Two buyers were keenly interested and willing to make acceptable offers. Both were moving from a distance with their jobs so they were purchases of necessity and both were flexible on completion dates. The difference was that one did not have a house to sell and the other did. Our recommendation to the vendor was easy. We took instructions recently to sell a property for a family who want to move to Brewood and who think 10

they know the property they want but have very sensibly decided not to look at it as they fear they will fall in love with it and if it goes before they have a sale it would then be worse than if they had not seen it. Hopefully by the time you read this we will have a buyer for them and all will be well. We have recently put another period property on the market and again within a few days have strong interest. One of those interested needs to move quickly and the vendors have said they will move into rented property to facilitate a sale.

I am always expected to give a report on the current state of the market. As I write in mid October it is in a strange position. Sales are very busy, we are receiving multiple offers on many properties and even some properties which have been on the market for some time are finding buyers. It does not seem as though buyers are being put off by the current political uncertainty. However there are fewer properties coming on the market so perhaps sellers are sitting on their hands until the future becomes clearer. Strong demand and reduced supply are the obvious ingredients of rising prices but I do not expect that to happen as I think more properties will come on the market and it will readjust. The market has survived many crises and I think it will survive this one.

Our advice will always be that if you have to sell before you can buy and are certain you want to move then put your own on the market first. It would be inappropriate of me to turn this page into a sales pitch but you know where we are and our door is always open! (is that within the proper guidelines Mr Editor?) Think carefully and Take advice before accessing your pension

I have had a client approach me for advice on transferring his preserved final salary pension benefits. This is the third time he has been to see me to access his pension and his story still gives me a shudder whenever I recall our initial conversation. In early 2016 Gary called me to say that he had a preserved pension for which he had received a cash equivalent transfer value (CETV) of £87,937 and asked if I would facilitate a transfer so that he could cash in his pension to use towards a property purchase. I asked him if he was still working and he told me that yes he worked at JLR and he was a higher rate taxpayer. At this point I told him that firstly the scheme (which I was quite familiar with) were not 16

offering anything like true value for transfers and secondly as a higher rate tax payer he would pay 40% tax on 75% of the value. He then went on to tell me that he was fully aware of the tax payable as he had recently encashed his money purchase pension which had a value in excess of £100,000 and he had paid £36,000 in tax. He had used the proceeds to purchase a flat that he now rents giving a monthly income of £400 and believed that financially this was the right thing for him to do. Basically what he had done was turn a pension fund of £120,000 into a £88,000 flat with rental income. He made this decision without taking financial advice as he did not want to incur any costs and the only reason he was calling me now was because he had no option but to involve a financial adviser to facilitate his transfer.

Sadly I was too late to stop him making that mistake and although he was adamant at the time that he wanted to transfer his preserved pension, eventually I managed to convince him otherwise. He called me again early in 2018 to see if it was wise to transfer and again I convinced him otherwise. This brings us forward to 2019 when he has just received his latest CETV and the scheme Trustees have obviously changed their stance and are looking to encourage members to transfer as the figure he has been quoted is now in excess of £220,000 over 2.5 times the initial amount. The first thing Gary said to me was “you were right John not to let me transfer in 2016, now the amount being offered has increased greatly I want to transfer and cash it in”. It doesn’t bear thinking about the amount of tax he would pay if he did actually follow wolverhampton west magazine

through with that idea however thankfully he now listens to me and will follow my advice. The changes in pension legislation in April 2015 whilst in my opinion were great for many individuals, they have resulted in consumers paying way too much tax in accessing money they did not need or where there were better alternatives. To give you an idea, savers withdrew a record £8.18bn from their pension pots in 2017-18, up by more than £1.5bn on the previous year according to figures from HM Revenue & Customs.

accessing their pensions and in turn rewarding the Treasury my message is this - before you decide to withdraw funds please meet with a financial adviser before it’s too late. In Gary’s case I cannot get back the £36,000 tax he has already paid although I can protect him going forward. The motto of the story is take advice before making any financial decisions regarding your pension.

In total, savers have withdrawn £25.6bn since the start of pension freedoms in April 2015. This can leave consumers exposed to a new set of risks including paying too much tax than what is necessary on withdrawals, or leaving the money languishing in low or near zero paying deposit accounts. The freedoms marked a radical change in the retirement landscape which is now almost unrecognisable from where it was before inception in 2015. Individuals now have much more control over their pension savings including allowing those looking for a more gradual transition into retirement the chance to work, combining reduced hours with part pension as they approach or move beyond traditional retirement age. Mel Eves joins the choir

Last year we commemorated the 100th Anniversary of the end of The Great War by inviting local people to send in family stories, handed down over the generations. We had stories of love and loss, of heroes and white feathers and of sacrifice at home in the local munitions factories. It became clear that Wolverhampton contributed in no small way to the War effort, both home and away. This year we have decided to feature a storyboard of memories connected to local sports personalities who have left an indelible mark on West Midland life. If you have any memories of family or friends, along with a photograph, we would be delighted to add them to the storyboard.

Three Pines are delighted to have been awarded the contract to revamp the former Bond Street Tavern, in Bond Street.

The bar is currently closed but has now been taken over by investor First Orchard Ltd, which has a new premises license and will be relaunching under the name Cosmo Bonsor in a £500,000 revamp. In a written submission to the city council’s Statutory Licensing Sub-Committee, spokesman Jason Pitt said: “Our intention is to create a new premium offer hospitality venue. “We intend to refurbish, re-brand and relaunch the premises under this new name, with a view to recreating the Edwardian elegance of yesteryear combined with splashes of Art Nouveau splendor. “Customers will also be able to enjoy simple but nutritious food and drink offers available from late morning onwards.” “Upstairs, the plan is to convert the existing residential space into four ‘Airbnb-style’ rooms to let on a short-term basis. We see this development as a quality addition to a historical part of Wolverhampton.” The new license application also relates to the playing of recorded music, late night refreshments and the sale of alcohol on and off the premises.

Roy’s Success in Business “I left school at 16 with nothing and I didn’t know anything about business, so to further my education I went on courses after work to learn as much as I could.” Aged just 21, Roy had his big breakthrough: “I had been selling antiques in the UK but I knew that the market demand was bigger in America, so I flew to the states and opened two shops – one in Colorado and one in California.” Six years later Roy had made enough profit to pursue a different venture back home. “I opened my first care home in the UK through my company, Select Healthcare Ltd, which proved to be incredibly successful. I then went on to open a further 86 homes nationwide, which now house 2000 residents and employ 4000 members of staff.” As the fastest growing specialist healthcare business in the UK, Roy’s company is leading the way in the industry. But, that’s not Roy’s only success because he also owns the prestigious Mount Hotel, which is regarded as Wolverhampton’s premier venue for weddings and functions. During a special graduation ceremony – which was held at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre on 18th September – Roy received his doctorate from the university and gave an inspirational speech to graduates. It’s been over thirty years since Wolverhampton businessman Roy Delisser Bernard first started out in business and now, his long and highly successful entrepreneurial career has been celebrated by the University of Wolverhampton. As Roy explains: “I was utterly delighted when I heard that I had been given an Honorary Doctorate of Business Administration from the university - I had no idea that I had even been considered for the honour.” Roy’s business career started when he was 19 years old and working in the antiques trade. “I’d started a job as a van driver delivering antiques and I quickly began learning about the trade. So I got together just £200 and I started out on my own trading antiques.” Determined to succeed, Roy did everything he could to learn about business. 28

“I was happy to be able to share my story and show everyone that they can achieve their goals with hard work and dedication. My beginnings were humble: I lived on a council estate in the ‘wrong side of town’ but with the love and support of my mother I was encouraged to ‘have a go’ and at the age of 14 I had 5 jobs.” Roy’s sister, Verona – a three-time Olympian 400m runner – provided much inspiration too. Honorary awards are presented by the university to people who have made a significant contribution to their field of expertise and, Roy was also recognised for his work within Wolverhampton’s youth organisation The Way Zone, of which he is a founding member. “I am incredibly proud to receive the honour and really happy that my success in business has been recognised in this way.” And for those who are just embarking on their own career path, Roy has some words of advice: “Opportunities will come at different times of your life, if you want to be successful take your chances and ‘go for it”. Doing good with waste wood ASAN Wood Saints is a social enterprise working to benefit community and environment, transforming waste into shared assets through our inclusive volunteering program. Our operation self-finances by providing a competitive wood waste collection service, timber yard for trade and public, and a wood workshop. We provide an environmentally friendly alternative to Skip Hire for producers of wood waste across the Black Country and parts of both Staffordshire and Shropshire. Working from our base at The Wood Depot on Dixon Street in Wolverhampton, we are committed to reducing disposal costs, reducing waste going to landfill and to creating jobs for local people. No matter what the situation, we aim to offer a sustainable solution. It has now been over 18 months since the launch of Wood Saints and during that time the team of dedicated staff and volunteers

have all helped Wood Saints get to where it is now. We have expanded the wood yard to cater for the higher influx of timber from our collections. We are currently upgrading our welfare facilities on site and have a number of new initiatives and improvements in the pipeline. In addition to our normal activities, we also run woodwork clubs on a Thursday evening and Saturday mornings, where people can learn traditional woodworking skills before moving on to develop their own projects.

launches Members’ Commemorative Book The Society is proud to have ownership of this splendid book and is enormously grateful to those who created it. A copy of ‘Wolverhampton Society of Artists Celebrating 100 Years’ will be lodged in the city archives at Wolverhampton Art Gallery for future generations to see. The book will also be on show at the Society’s Centenary Exhibition in December 2019 at the Wolverhampton Art Gallery when a further significant Centenary Publication is to be launched.

The Society would like to thank The Right Worshipful Mayor of Wolverhampton Councillor Claire Darke and the Mayor’s Consort Doctor Paul Darke for their generous hospitality. We also thank the staff at the Mayor’s offices for their support in helping us to make our book launch such a special day.

In celebration of their Centenary Year the Wolverhampton Society of Artists has published a book featuring the artwork of over one hundred of its members. Each member’s page features images of their artwork along with a biography describing how they create their art and what it means to them. The book is now part of the history of the Society as it captures a unique snapshot of the broad spectrum of creativity, of its members at this moment in time. Having been authorised to use the Borough’s Coat of Arms on its publications since 1996 the Society was further pleased to be the guest of the Mayor of Wolverhampton in the Mayor’s Parlour at Wolverhampton Civic Centre on August 19th 2019. Chair of the Society Carol Widenbar says, ‘The Society is fortunate to have many professional people in its membership all of whom bring their particular skills to bear in all that we do and we will be thanking four members of the Society whose 32

250g good quality plain flour 1 tsp dried yeast Pinch of salt 100ml whole milk, warmed (not hot) 3 eggs (Two beaten together, 1 extra) 1 tsp vanilla extract 50g golden caster sugar, plus extra for dusting 100g softened butter Zest and juice of one orange 100g raisins 100g sultanas 100g mixed peel (for non-peel-lovers you can substitute cranberries)

Method 1. Soak the fruit overnight in the orange juice. 2. Mix the flour and salt, the yeast and the milk in a mixer with a dough hook. You can do it by hand, it just takes longer. Gradually mix in two beaten eggs and the vanilla. Knead until the dough is smooth and springy. Leave in a bowl, covered with a damp cloth and allow to rise until doubled in size. 3. Add the sugar, butter and the yolk from the remaining egg. Mix again, either with the machine, or by hand, until the dough is smooth again. Add the fruit and zest and knead quickly until it’s all incorporated into the dough. Leave in a bowl, covered with a damp cloth, in a cool place for at least two hours until doubled

in size again. You can leave it in the fridge overnight if you prefer. 4. Line a large, six-holed muffin tray with paper cases. Divide the dough into six portions and roll into balls. Place one ball into each muffin case, cover with a damp cloth and leave for 20 minutes. 5. Heat the oven to 180C / 160 fan or Gas mark 4. Brush the tops of the panettones with the remaining egg whites and dust with caster sugar. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the muffins have risen and are golden in colour. Leave to cool on a wire rack. Variation - Add some brandy to the overnight soak in orange juice for a little extra kick. wolverhampton west magazine

Local choir celebrates its 90th year

with a performance of Handel’s Messiah This year is very special for Wombourne & District Choral Society as it is 90 years since the choir was formed back in 1929. As part of the 90th anniversary celebrations, the choir will be performing Handel’s Messiah in conjunction with members of Wolverhampton Grammar School Chamber Choir and the WGS Adult Choral Society. Rehearsals are now underway in preparation for the performance which will be with four professional soloists and an 18-piece orchestra.

Half Marathon Events Yet another good event in this its 22nd year. The half marathon relay, kindly sponsored by Paycare was reintroduced into the programme of events and this attracted people who could not run a half marathon distance. The everpopular cycle ride, sponsored by Berriman Eaton Estate Agents was well received and it was encouraging to see so many younger people taking part in the 20K distance. Winter gardening

Pots of cabbage! Tips • Select a frost-proof container because these pots need to withstand wintery conditions. The most dependable pots are made of fibreglass, lead, iron, heavy plastic, or stone. Most terracotta will crack in cold temperatures, but some glazed varieties are frost-proof. • Use a good general-purpose compost. There are mixes specifically made for use in containers, which provide the essential drainage that plants living in pots need.

November and December can be grey and miserable months. That’s why I like to inject some colour with winter bedding plants. A cheerful pot by the front door can make you smile on the gloomiest morning. Obviously, the choice of plants for winter is not as large as during the summer months but there are enough varieties around to make very attractive combinations for pots. My favourite plant for winter pots has to be the ornamental cabbage. These robust beauties come in wonderful colours including cream, pink and purple – with either attractive frilly or very spiky leaves. They pair beautifully with winter-flowering pansies and hardy cyclamen. Try planting three pots of different sizes using a colour scheme which co-ordinates with the cabbages. Plant a 50cm / 20inch pot with four large ornamental frilly cabbages surrounding a central spiky one, to give some height to the display. Then choose a smaller pot (38cm / 15inches) and plant one frilly ornamental cabbage surrounded by pink and purple winterflowering pansies. Finally plant a small pot (25cm / 10inches) with a mixture of hardy cyclamen and white pansies. The resulting display will give you pleasure through November, December and January. 52

• Make sure you place plenty of drainage material in the bottom of the pots. • A good compost will contain enough slow release fertiliser to maintain the plants for several weeks during autumn and winter. If they’re still going strong as winter turns you can give them a bit of a feed, but by February or March you will want to think about replanting your pots with spring bedding. • Think about gravel – I like to use a layer of gravel over the soil of my winter pots for several reasons. It gives the planted pots an attractive finish, keeps rain from splashing back on to the plants, provides some insulation for the soil and reflects light and warmth in any winter sun thus creating a little microclimate in which the plants will be happier. • Water them! The plants will need moisture around their roots so water as needed unless the soil in the container is frozen. Do not water frozen pots because the plants are unable to absorb the water.

Prepare the garden

for winter

While it’s mild and there’s no frost in the ground plant bare root hedging and fruit trees. For some winter colour in the garden use shrubs such as Viburnum fragrans or Bodnantense Dawn, Skimmias, Gaultherias or Leucothoe. There is a wide choice of smaller shrubs available which can be planted into baskets and pots for colour during the winter and then transferred into the garden in the spring when you replant for summer. Continue planting pansies, wallflowers and winter bedding, the sooner it’s done now the better. If we do get a sharp frost winter pansy flowers will droop down but once they thaw out in the sun they pop back up giving colour even on a cold day. November is the ideal month for planting tulip bulbs. As the end of November approaches, many people start to purchase Christmas house plants. One of the best Christmas plants is the Poinsettia. It gives instant colour in a room. They like good light during the day and a warm room, never in a draught. Only water when the soil

is dry and never stand in water for longer than 10 minutes. In a cooler room the brightly coloured cyclamen is ideal. They need good light at all times. Only water just as the foliage begins to wilt and make sure that any excess water is removed from saucers after 15 minutes. Also consider the Christmas Cherry with its shiny red-orange berries, Christmas cacti with its beautiful shrimp like red, pink, white or lavender flowers. Azaleas will flourish in either a warm or cool room and are very easy to keep, requiring plenty of water. Cacti and succulents have seen a resurgence this year and are ideal presents for encouraging the younger generation into gardening. Along with many garden centres we offer Planted Arrangements

in baskets, which along with the colourful houseplants can be gift wrapped, making them an ideal present. For a living gift consider buying a shrub for the garden or a planted-up tub or hanging basket specifically designed for winter colour. From the end of November, freshly cut Christmas trees will be available in centres. When you get your tree home, put it in a stand or pot that can be kept moist, as warm temperatures and dry air inside the home make the tree absorb water very rapidly. Keep away from hot radiators, open fires and TV sets. This also applies to rooted trees, especially if you’re planning on planting it in the garden after Christmas.

aces Quarter of a century Tettenhall Tigers Volleyball Club has celebrated its 25th anniversary in style, with its annual presentation ceremony seeing players, friends and supporters recognised, as well as special thanks given to Paycare, which has provided financial support to the club over the last two years. Nick Shaffery, Coach at Tettenhall Tigers Volleyball Club, explained: “We’re so thankful to have been able to celebrate such a big anniversary and to host it in the hall of King’s School in Wolverhampton, which is where the club was founded all those years ago. “Volleyball still struggles on a national level with funding and awareness, and so we wanted to mark the occasion and to share thanks to all who continue to support us. “Over the last couple of years, Paycare’s support has helped us buy new equipment, cover facility hire, kits, and general running costs of the club. Thanks to them, we’ve

flourished and continue to attract more young people to the sport.”

Poxons Butchers of Castlecroft have been supplying the local community with only the highest quality fresh British meat, sourced direct from local farms. The family-run business began life in 1957 when Dennis Poxon opened the shop in Windmill Lane. Some 30 years later his son, Nigel, took over the company after training at Brierley Hill’s once prominent meat product manufacturer, Marsh and Baxter.

“We make 21 different varieties of sausage in total, including one that’s gluten free.”

Already well known for their delicious homemade pies and sausages, Nigel built a dedicated pie and sausage room to meet with their ever-growing customer demand.

And customers can get a look at exactly how their favourite products are made when they’re in store.

Nigel explains: “Our pies and sausages have always been made on the premises, ever since we introduced them to the shop in the 1970’s.

In addition to the sausage, there’s a delicious choice of savoury pies, scotch eggs, pasties and even ready meals.

“There are two large LCD TV screens in the shop that show how we make our pork pies and pastries.” All of Poxons locally sourced meat is hung in the traditional way before being prepared into retail cuts of meat. The team are always more than happy to cut their lamb, pork, beef, poultry or game to meet their customers’ requirements.

Poxons ‘Bring Your Own Dishes’ service means that customers can impress their guests with lasagne, cannelloni or meatballs that have been made on-site - using Poxon’s meats – and served in their very own dish. The Poxons team is made up of nine members of staff, who are led by Manager, Philip Ward “Philip has been with us for over 30 years and does a great job managing all aspects of the business. I’m lucky to have a great team of staff working for me.” Nigel adds “We’re old fashioned in our values when it comes to customer service, yet modern in terms of our facilities. We move with the times when it comes to technology too,”

the dining/bar space is designed to impress and it does impress my long-suffering girlfriend Nicola and I very much indeed. Newer-looking than a freshly-minted pound coin, clearly serious investment has been ploughed into this landmark eatery, which boasts convenient on-site parking and is situated just off Bridgnorth Road. We’re dazzled by glitzy fixtures and fittings, all of which are finished to the highest order; a spectacular bar-space and sizeable dining area, complemented by stylish dŽ cor with standout custom artworks. IÕ m seated opposite (a painting of) David Bowie, which, being a fan, I take to be a good omen. Beyond the obvious changes however, Zooma has implemented a new Bar and Grill aspect to the business as well: customers are encouraged to pop in for a drink, without the formality of a sit-down meal. I notice a few doing just this and I can see why, itÕ s a great environment in which to relax. Immediately Imran makes himself known to us, as he does with every other diner over the course of the evening, many of whom he greets like old friends. This continuity of care is what will ensure the success of the new venture: cosmetic appeal fades but core qualities endure, like the exceptional serving staff. Throughout the evening we meet many staff and are impressed by each of them for their limitless energy, willingness to help, substantial knowledge base and friendly manner. This food review is so far lacking food, so letÕ s get on with things. IÕ m starving, rememberÉ We opt for a trio of starters to share: Vegetable Samosas Ð Deep fried triangular parcels of spiced vegetables, served with mint dip (£3.50), Onion Bhajis – Finely sliced onion in gram flour, battered and deep fried (£3.50) and Chicken PakoraÐ Strips of chicken breast coated in a spicy batter and deep fried (£4.75). After only a brief wait our plates arrive. Exquisitely presented and packing a flavoursome punch, weÕ re pleased with our choices. The chicken is prime and plump and the battered coating is crispy, not dry. The samosas are scoffed in an instant. And the onion bhajis, when allied to what is a supremely creamy and tantalising mint dip, are delicious. I only wish for more. Ò ItÕ s only the starterÓ reminds Nicola. Ò Yes but now IÕ ve tasted the goodness here, if anything, IÕ m even more hungryÓ , I add, pointlessly. Eager to get to the main event, I have a quick chat with Imran to narrow down his sizeable menu. He reassures Nicola that all dishes can be

customised to suit personable taste when it comes to spiciness. After I reveal IÕ m a sucker for creamy curry sauces he recommends a dish that vaguely resembles Chicken Tikka Masala: but it comes with a warning. Apparently IÕ m not to be alarmed, butÉ its sauce has a bright green appearance to it. Intrigued and eager to follow ImranÕ s advice, I order it anyway: ‘Malabar Chicken Tikka – chicken cooked in tandoori first and then finished with mild, creamy aromatic pistachio and almond sauceÕ (£13.95). Whether it will prove to be my Kryptonite remains to be seen. Nicola goes for Ô Hydrabadi Biriyani Ð tender chicken or lamb cooked with basmati rice, flavoured with mint and saffron, accompanied with vegetable curry sauceÕ (£12.95). By this point the restaurant is filling up (I’m reliably informed that it is fully-booked on this Thursday evening) and the noise is steadily building, contributing a pleasant background hum. Larger groups hang at the bar before being seated; quieter twosomes occupy cosy cornerspots and we enjoy a window-seat. It is again not long before our mains arrive and when they do weÕ re blown away. Piping hot and rich with exotic flavour, I’d be happy to eat either – or both even! I receive a side of Pilau Rice (£3.50) and a Garlic Naan (£3.50) and hungrily tuck in to my resolutely green dish. Despite the unusual colour, thereÕ s not a trace of apprehension when food smells and looks as good as this. The flavour combination in the sauce is sensational (you can really taste the nuts); a creamy and intoxicating blend that has me abandoning good manners and ploughing my plate with torn strips of naan bread. My chicken is tender and succulent and Nicola says only good things about her choice too. Sufficiently stuffed, we’re pleased thereÕ s no dessert menu available to us tonight Ð although it will be coming soon: so too will Tapas-style bar snacks and a takeaway service, so watch this space. Zooma is a cut-above and gives its customers the best of both worlds. Its new restaurant space is as impressive as the food it serves within it and for that reason among others, weÕ ll be back. NEW ECHO SYSTEM FOR HEART ASSESSMENT

Cardiologists and imaging staff at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital have welcomed the installation of a permanent new Echocardiography machine, used to assess the structure and function of the heart’s chambers and valves. The new ultrasound system is a high spec Philips Affiniti 70 with echocardiography capabilities. Dr Sandeep Hothi, a Consultant Cardiologist, also at New Cross Hospital, joined the team of seven cardiologists at Nuffield Health 12 months ago. Prompt evaluation by a cardiologist is the key to determining the point at which a problem requires treatment.” The heart specialist says, “Having the new Echocardiography machine on-site complements our fabulous range of imaging facilities, including CT and MRI, and expert staff. Angina, which is pain due to coronary disease, typically causes patients to have chest pain when they exert themselves due to a narrowing in one or more arteries to the heart. Through diagnosing this condition, experts can advise on appropriate treatments to treat symptoms and significantly reduce the risk of heart attack. The risk of coronary artery disease is increased when diabetic, having high blood pressure, if you are or have been a smoker, having high cholesterol or if there is a family history of this at a young age, typically under 55-60.” National guidance stipulates that CT coronary angiography is the first line test in chest pain suspected to be angina because of the ability to get good quality images of the coronary arteries in a CT scanner without the risks of an invasive coronary angiogram, typically performed in a cardiac catheter laboratory.

“Depending on the findings, additional non-invasive imaging may be required and, in some cases, an invasive angiogram. Cardiac MRI is an advanced imaging method that does not use radiation and allows imaging of the heart muscle and valves and can also assess the sufficiency of the blood supply to the heart muscle. A stress echo provides similar information by speeding up the heart with medication or with exercise, and scanning the heart while doing so, to determine whether the blood supply to the heart is normal.” Common diagnoses that patients may be concerned about include angina, arrhythmias or heart failure. Clare’s Zipwire Challenge received the devastating news that two of her three daughters had the same condition. “In April 2018, my youngest daughter Penelope was rushed to hospital and diagnosed with a UTI and Sepsis. She spent a week in hospital on drips and antibiotics, including numerous lumbar punctures.”

Clare completed the Velocity 2 Zipwire challenge on July 28th at Penryn Quarry, the fastest zip line in the world to raise money for Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Clare suffers with Chronic Kidney Disease Stage 4 - which means her combined kidney function is only 24% - and she has been told that she will require a transplant in the near future. And, in 2018 she

Later that year, Clare was told that that her middle daughter, Nancy also suffered with the same condition. “Nancy had one of her kidneys removed in June, following a kidney ultrasound which revealed that the damage to her kidney was much more severe compared to Penelope’s, as the condition had gone undiagnosed for four and a half years.” Clare is really keen to express her appreciation to everyone at the hospital. “I can’t thank the entire team enough for what they’ve done for us. It’s not just the medical and administration

team which are amazing; it’s also the play staff that do those little things that make all the difference, like dressing up and making balloon animals to entertain the children.” Through kind donations Clare raised £1,567.51 which went directly to the Renal Unit at the hospital where Nancy and Penelope have both received care and will continue to be monitored. On 14th August Clare presented the cheque to Maria Weaver at the Fundraising Hub at the hospital.

Approximately 2% of adults will have a leg ulcer at some stage in their lives Despite the misery they cause, leg ulcers remain a neglected problem. Four out of 5 ulcers (80%) are caused by a problem with the leg veins with a minority (15%) caused by problems in the arteries. About 95% of venous leg ulcers can be correctly identified by their appearance, by checking for pulses in the feet and by performing an ultrasound of the veins. Venous leg ulcers usually appear on the lower part of the leg just around the ankle. Often, there are varicose veins or thread veins around the ulcer and the leg is often swollen. The skin is sometimes thickened and discoloured by varicose eczema which may develop months or years before the ulcer as a warning sign that the vein circulation is not normal.

The aim of treatment is healing the ulcer as quickly as possible. This usually means graduated compression either with bandages or stockings. In most cases, antibiotics, creams and ointments are not necessary. There is now good evidence that early treatment of any underlying vein problems both speeds ulcer healing and reduces the risk of recurrence. This means a full assessment with an ultrasound scan is vital.

D e m e n t i a and the Lasting Power of Attorney More than 850,000 people in the UK are currently living with Dementia and this figure is expected to rise in coming years. With more people than ever being affected by Dementia, it is becoming increasingly vital to consider what steps you can take to safeguard your finances, to help your loved ones and to make sure that the people you trust are involved in making decisions about your care when you are no longer in a position to make those decisions yourself. Figures obtained by the Solicitors for the Elderly indicate that 86% of people would want their family and friends to make decisions on their behalf in the event that they became too ill to make decisions themselves; yet only a staggering 12% of people have actually made a Lasting Power of Attorney. If you lose mental capacity, even those nearest to you will not be entitled to handle your affairs for you unless you have already addressed this and put in place a Lasting Power of Attorney. If you have not they will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as your deputy which is a long, complex and costly procedure. Making a Lasting Power of Attorney provides you with the peace of mind that should you ever be incapable of managing your affairs; your trusted loved ones will be able to take over swiftly and easily for you.

Types of Lasting Power of Attorney There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney. You have the choice to draw up one, or both. Health and Welfare lasting powers of attorney only take effect once you are no longer in a position to make your own decisions and will enable your attorney to be involved in decisions regarding your future care needs and the type of medical treatment you receive – including decisions on life-sustaining treatments. A Property and Financial Affairs lasting power of attorney can be used immediately if you wish and will allow your attorney to deal with your bank or building society accounts, pay your bills and collect any benefits or pensions which you might be entitled to – the day to day things required. It can also be used to sell your property if you are incapable of selling it yourself. In addition to being essential if you are mentally incapacitated it can also assist where there may be physical restrictions such as those which may follow a stroke.

When to Make Your Lasting Power of Attorney The effects of Dementia can be devastating on families, but making a Lasting Power of Attorney can help make living with Dementia easier both for you and for the ones that you love. Whilst there is no right time to make a Lasting Power of Attorney, you should consider making one sooner rather than later. Too often, it is left until the point that the person affected has already lost mental capacity and at that point it is too late to make a Lasting Power of

Attorney. The Court of Protection application that will then result, as well as being a costly and time consuming process, will also mean you will lose control over who will look after your best interests.

Do I need a Solicitor to prepare my Lasting Power of Attorney? Whilst you can prepare a Lasting Power of Attorney yourself it’s easy to make mistakes which could make the Power of Attorney unusable. It is advisable therefore, to instruct a solicitor to prepare the documents for peace of mind that they are drawn up correctly and will be valid for use when needed the most. If you have been diagnosed with, or fear that you might develop Dementia or any illness which might prevent you from making decisions for yourself at some time in the future you should put a Lasting Power of Attorney in place now. If you are one of them, it means that your assets, which might include a house, savings and other property, will be distributed as

Many people, wrongly, assume that if someone dies without a will, everything goes to their spouse. This isn’t necessarily right - it depends on how your assets are owned, the size of your estate and what other family members there are such as children. The intestacy rules dictate who gets what so to ensure your assets will definitely pass to your spouse and or children, you need a will.

If you have stepchildren you would like to benefit or a partner you’re not married to, it’s vital you make a will. They would

have no automatic claim on your estate if you don’t stipulate that in an official document. One of the most common misconceptions we hear about – with sometimes devastating consequences – is that divorce revokes a will. Marriage revokes a will but divorce doesn’t. When a divorce is final, for inheritance purposes, the divorced spouse is treated as having died but in all other respects, the will is valid. This can cause complications if you haven’t stipulated who should inherit what if your spouse ‘dies’ and the rules of intestacy could apply. If you divorce or remarry, you should always redraft your will. One reason that some people might put off making a will is the perceived expense. Birchfield School is a fully co-educational school for pupils aged 4 to 13. It is set in twenty acres of beautiful Shropshire countryside, enjoying views of the Wrekin and the Clee Hills. It is located just off the A41, close to Junction 3 of the M54; just 30 minutes from Birmingham, Shrewsbury, Bridgnorth and Market Drayton. Education & Schooling by David Williams – Headmaster of Tettenhall College

“Having written these articles since January 2014 I now arrive at the point where this is my last as I will leave my post as Head of Tettenhall College in December. It has been a pleasure to write them although rather like a teenager’s homework they get left until just before the deadline and, when complete, I wonder what all the fuss was about.” As I take up a new role as Education Director with a group of schools (Bellevue Education) I am of course reflecting on what I will miss as Head. Although I will still have a large involvement in the direction of a number of schools I will miss the daily involvement with one community of pupils, parents and staff where one can never predict what will happen on a daily basis and random, often heart-warming conversations take place especially in a school where our youngest pupils are two years old. The opportunity to affect positive change quickly has been a privilege whether this is in the form of improvement in facilities, creating new opportunities for learning or widening extracurricular activities or simply getting more local people through our gates to attend an event. The wonderful diversity of the Tettenhall College community has been a joy with our boarders from all over the world complementing the local population of day pupils who come from a range of cultures and backgrounds. These are also

joined by the growing numbers of international families who have relocated to the area for work purposes and rightly see the school as a friendly, warm and dynamic environment where we can provide the vital support for their children whatever their linguistic capability. A few thoughts on Wolverhampton itself. On arrival here I received a warm Black Country welcome which has continued throughout our time here but would often be asked “what have you come here for?!”. My wife and myself have often enjoyed compiling our list of “good things about Wolverhampton” to counter some of the self-deprecating comments from the residents. Wolverhampton is a proper city with all that comes with it; some issues but equally a vibrant place with a sense of pride especially reflected in the football team that lies at its heart and has visibly lifted it in the last couple of years. Our recent video of the School contains some drone footage and reveals that Tettenhall is extremely green as, as a whole, it is a city that has allowed its trees

to grow and line its streets rather than cut them down in the interests of Health and Safety. The College itself is a wonderful haven of nature with its protected woodland in which I have seen badgers, foxes, woodpeckers, buzzards and parakeets (!) to name some of the species to be found a stone’s throw away from the town centre. It has also been exciting to live in a region that holds such strategic political importance and is noticeably in the ascendancy. The proximity of Birmingham, its history, attractions and many improvements means that the region has a major international city. This has of course affected the prosperity of Wolverhampton as our teenagers and boarders skip the town centre on our doorstep. There remains a lot to be done to recapture the place of which former pupils of a certain generation talk so fondly when recalling their days at the School but I am sure that, with some of the enterprise for which it is famous, that way can be found to reinvigorate its streets.

So, as I ready myself for the final weeks, as any Head knows, we are merely temporary stewards of schools that have far longer histories than ourselves and therefore hope that Tettenhall College is now in better shape. As I start a new and exciting challenge in a different part of the country, there will be an inevitable sense of sadness but I will always extol the virtues of the city in which I have lived for the last six years.

Wolverhampton Racecourse Ladiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Day returned this summer for another fabulous afternoon at Wolverhampton racecourse. Over 10,000 fans enjoyed an amazing day of fashion, colour, and quality racing whilst soaking up the incredible atmosphere of Ladiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Day. The excitement continued into the evening as International Superstar Jess Glynne performed a full set live on the outdoor stage, making it their best feature race day to date. Wolverhampton Lawn Tennis and Squash Club Over 400 guests partied the night away at a fantastic ‘Big Ball’ event at Wolverhampton Lawn Tennis & Squash Club. Wolves Legends – Oxley Park Golf Club Over 20 former Wolves players joined with supporters at the Former Players Association’s Annual Golf Day at Oxley Park, raising approximately £4,000 for two local charities. Players spanning the generations included Terry Wharton, who made his debut in 1961, through to the likes of John Richards, Phil Parkes, Kenny Hibbitt and Geoff Palmer from the Seventies and Eighties, Mick Holmes and Andy Mutch from the late Eighties and early Nineties, and Don Goodman, who finished his Wolves career in 1998. Steve Daley organises the Annual Golf Day, with help from his wife Lyn, Geoff Palmer and the Wolves FPA committee. This year’s two chosen charities were Birmingham Children’s Hospital, who have been supported by Wolves fans such as Neil Taylor and Steve Plant in recent years, and the Maureen Parkes Breast Care Fund, a charity set up in memory of the wife of the former Wolves goalkeeper Phil Parkes. www.wolverhamptonwestmag.co.uk

Great North Run for Compton Care Peter Smith, Dealer Principle of Mercedes-Benz of Wolverhampton, took on the biggest half marathon in the UK; The Great North Run, to raise funds for Compton Care. The Dealer Principle raised a staggering £820 in sponsorship and donations, an amount which will fund the equivalent of 16 specialist counselling sessions for patients who have been diagnosed with an incurable illnesses, and their loved ones. Compton Community Fundraiser Vicki Wootton said “Thanks to the dedication and hard work of Peter and people like him, Compton Care are able to continue to provide the clinical, emotional and social care and support people living with incurable illness need. This ensures that they can continue to do the things that make them, them – because being alive isn’t the same as feeling alive.
