Where there's a Willows, there's a way How we are keeping you safe post COVID Well it has been a weird 10 weeks hasn’t it and let’s be honest it’s still not really over, I don’t think there’s been anyone who hasn’t been affected in some way by all this craziness. However, so far at least it seems that things are getting better which is great news.

So what has changed in dentistry and what is likely to change? Well hopefully, if you are looked after at a practice like ours, you are used to having a nice friendly smile , a cup of something warm in a cosy waiting room and maybe some magazines to flick through, a dentist that you like and as far as dentists can be, not too bad an experience. Well some things have changed, and some things haven’t. The smiles are still there as is the friendly greeting. Now if you come to us by car, one of our caring team will come to your car and take your temperature (something we never had to do before), we do this using quite a cool gadget that looks like a small speed camera gun, which rather than giving you an unpleasant ticket, tells us your body temperature. Assuming it is not too raised above 37 degrees (normal body temperature) we’ll give you a buzzer like you sometimes get in restaurants while you are waiting for your table.

If you like we have a pretty big reception, so as long as you promise not to lick, sneeze or cough on anyone, you are welcome to come in. One of our team will grab you a drink while you liberally apply hand sanitiser to your hands. Our sanitiser contains Aloe Vera and smells quite nice, so we are told, you won’t be accused of smelling like an alcoholic after you’ve left us! You will notice the team are wearing visors and masks, these are to stop you kissing us (I am kidding). These are to protect you from any aerosols that might be produced and vice versa. As you would expect, every single gadget we use in our clinics are sterilised in our state of the art decontamination centres in machines called autoclaves that destroy and kill anything and everything by heating all of our instruments to 134 degrees centigrade at a pressure of 15psi (even hotter than the inside of a Breville cheese toasted sandwich). Now in dentistry some of our tools spray water and air. This isn’t ideal as you can imagine, so all of our surgeries have now been equipped with industrial air exchangers, obviously with us being us, ours pull out all the air in even our biggest surgeries twice a minute, so we aim to get all of the air out of a room at least 20 times in between patients, which renders the room cleaner than most operating rooms. Add in to that we are using technology from other industries such as fogging machines that spray out HOCL (a virus killing spray) and you have an environment cleaner than… well something that’s incredibly clean. You may also see the dentists and their nurses wearing some quite strange looking masks while we are doing our jobs, this is to keep you safe from us and us from you. It also helps if either of us have had garlic the night before. Well if this all sounds a little overkill, don’t worry, unlike some practices we’re not charging PPE surcharges, as the Covid alert level starts to drop we may be able to relax too , but in the meantime, we want you to know that your safety is our priority and certainly not your expense. We’re just here to give you great quality dental treatment, in a safe environment, with no pressure , no judgement, and great service. It’s just what we do.

From the EDITOR

We’re back! After what feels like an interminable few months in lockdown some semblance of normality has returned in recent weeks. Pubs, restaurants, hairdressers and lots of other businesses are now opening up, as well as a lot of the tourist industry – both home and abroad. Summer holidays look likely to be saved. There is now – at last – much on the horizon to enjoy after so much recent turmoil.

So much has been lost but much has been gained also, and here at Wolverhampton West we’re determined to concentrate on the positives. We have – like so many of us nationwide – been delighted to celebrate the inspirational people who have during this pandemic made us all so proud – people like Captain Sir Tom Moore who raised over £32 million for charity; the NHS staff and care workers who have given their all in helping combat the damage inflicted by coronavirus; local people like Nick Malenko and Royston Blythe, the men behind the National Hair Sunday Campaign; and anyone else who has shown kindness and consideration for others during these testing times. The coronavirus pandemic and resulting UK lockdown may have turned our world upside down, but we see this as an opportunity for positive change. Before lockdown, our lives were defined by speed: rushing around, living life at rocket pace was the norm. Keeping up with work responsibilities, social obligations and a never-ending stream of other ‘to-do’s’ left us exhausted and empty. This enforced period of calm has taught us the benefits of slowing down. We’ve all had to adapt to a new normal and re-evaluate what is important in our lives. I have discovered I can cook and have perfected several homemade dishes (involving no mixes or jars!). In fact, I’ve been successful to the point that I’ve toyed with the idea of applying to appear on MasterChef. The house and garden have never looked so splendid. And if you’re eager to keep yours up 06

to scratch, you’ll enjoy our many home and gardenbased features – including everything from garden lanterns to bespoke bricks from Manchester Bricks. Gisella and I have defined a new routine of exercising and walking in our local area, discovering the many wonderful routes we have on our doorstep. Out and about we’ve noticed a distinct and pleasant change among the people we’ve encountered, finding them to be especially personable and community-minded. It’s so refreshing to have time to chat, even if it’s while waiting to buy groceries. Of course, not everything has been quite so inspiring, because I’ve also mastered the art of lounging around for hours on end, buying huge amounts of gadgets and gizmos online, while watching endless repeats on TV. Blow-drying Gisella’s hair became very hard work too, as weeks ran into months – no wonder she can’t wait to return to Royston Blythe’s hair salon (by the way: anyone who has been lacking locks this lockdown, don’t feel left out, the Hair Regrowth Clinic can sort you out) and to check out Deborah Mitchell’s new Nettle Venom at Heaven. Maybe it’s because our world has shrunk so suddenly but I think we’ve all appreciated having such a vibrant local business community to rely upon to keep us going through this difficult period (on a personal note, Allan Bennett and Poxons Butchers kept me – just about – sane throughout it all!). Many local suppliers and businesses feature in the coming pages and we’re hugely grateful to them in particular – without them you simply wouldn’t be reading these words, so I urge you all to use their products and services as much as possible going forward. Weirdly despite the slowdown much has been happening. Ladies’ fashion retailer Aristocats is about to celebrate 40 years’ (Our May issue was to be Wolverhampton West’s 10th anniversary edition; ironically it fell exactly when we couldn’t celebrate it).

I can’t wait for all of this to pass. So I can return to “Social Distancing” on my own terms.

Competitions make us happy too: we have three for you this time. And, fingers crossed, you’ll soon be able to get in shape again at Artisan’s personal training studio as well – I know Gisella’s itching to get back into her normal fitness regime. But more than anything else, we hope that our latest edition helps you to bring back some sense of normality and that it finds all of our readers safe and well. See you in September…

Is there life after lockdown for the property market? The simple and straightforward answer is definitely a resounding ‘YES’ – the market is incredibly buoyant , and I genuinely did not think that would be the message I would be conveying in my first, post lockdown article for Wolverhampton West! When the country entered lockdown at the end of March I was quite convinced that the property market within the country would effectively close down for the remainder of the year. I was quite pessimistic and fully believed that no-one would want to move to a new house until 2021! During lockdown we continued to operate with key staff working from home to ensure that all of our sales progression work continued and sales that were currently agreed were still managed in the normal fashion. What surprised me was the levels of interest that were continually being received. Enquiries were high and, whilst we could not arrange viewings or undertake valuations, the demand was there. Between our three offices we had almost 170 viewings to arrange once lockdown restrictions were lifted. Logistically this was a bit of a nightmare, not least because we

only found out that the lockdown rules for estate agency were being lifted by a press announcement at 10pm allowing us to return to work the following morning at 9am! The market recommenced with an immediate release of the pent-up interest that came during lockdown, and it has not stopped yet! I am continually asked by clients, ‘’Why are you so busy?’’ and the truth is, I do not really know! We are finding that many people have spent their time during lockdown revising their housing requirements. They have decided that their house is too small or too big, they now want somewhere to work from home, they have an apartment with no garden and want some external space and, in a couple of cases, have decided they no longer want to live with their current partner! These factors, coupled with the fact that January and February were exceptionally busy as the Brexit fears finally abated, have come together to create a strong environment within the housing sector. As I write this article it is the 23rd of the month. The Tettenhall Office alone has already agreed sales on over 30 properties this month with a capital value of in excess of £10.75 million and we have received instructions to sell over 30 new properties with a capital value of in excess of £10.5 million.

This sort of market has not been seen for many years. Properties that were available pre-lockdown are now selling over asking price and we have seen multiple cases of competitive bidding meaning that sellers are having the luxury of choosing to whom they sell. What I feared would be a very quiet buyers’ market post lockdown has turned out to be exactly the opposite. As Caroline, our sales manager in Tettenhall, has said many times – she has not seen a market this busy in her thirty years plus of working within the industry. The lettings arm of our business remained fully active throughout lockdown, primarily dealing with the day to day management of our property portfolio, which is currently more than 300 properties. Although systems had to be adapted and altered it remained paramount that full compliance associated with the lettings process was maintained and emergency maintenance issues were resolved without delay. The level of enquires received through April and May was parallel with our sales departments, with new and existing tenants still actively looking to move, which was then reflected in our record-breaking June figures. The rental market always astounds us with the continual growth it demonstrates, and the forecast for July and August is already in excess of the equivalent months during 2019. Whilst all is good at the moment it remains to be seen what will happen next in the market. I shall look at this in my next article when I hope to be able to deliver equally positive news!

VolunteerS’ Week Community plays a huge role in Paycare and volunteering is very much an integral part of our ethos. The team has been continuing to do our bit to benefit Wolverhampton and the wider community, finding creative ways to help organisations secure valuable resources and equipment for workers on the frontline and to support those at higher risk, such as the food donations we’ve delivered to Good Shepherd to help those experiencing homelessness in the city. A local charity which supports women and children at risk from domestic abuse has seen demand for advice soar during the Coronavirus pandemic lockdown.

The Haven Wolverhampton runs a 24-hour helpline and launched an additional live chat facility (sponsored by Paycare) in 2018 as a way for people to directly reach out to the charity rather than being signposted through the police or other agencies.

With self-referrals already 13 times higher than agency referrals during the first year of the live chat being live, now more than ever it is important that services like this are available to women in dire need of support. During the first few weeks of lockdown, The Haven saw a 60% increase in website visits. Jade Secker, Fundraising Manager at The Haven Wolverhampton, said: “Women in dire need of support can use the service discreetly and receive responses quickly which is crucial in many situations. Our dedicated live chat service is kindly sponsored by our long-term partners, Paycare, which has essentially given us the funding to help so many more vulnerable women and children in Wolverhampton and surrounding areas to feel empowered to reach out.” The Haven helpline is 24/7 and is free from a landline – 08000 194 400. rominent local charity fundraiser and cycling legend Hugh Porter is no stranger to success. A four-time world professional pursuit champion and pursuit champion at the 1966 Commonwealth Games, Hugh was made an MBE in 1973 for services to cycle racing. Now in his 80th year he is undoubtedly one of Tettenhall’s finest residents and, unsurprisingly, in accordance with the time-worn maxim, behind him stands a great woman: wife of 55 years, Anita, who is a success story in her own right. “We met on the plane in September 1964, travelling to the Tokyo Olympics and married the following year,” remembers Hugh. Anita’s sport was swimming. It didn’t take long for love to blossom against a backdrop of a career filled with riches, because 60 years ago Anita Lonsbrough – as she was then known - was the toast of the nation.

It was in August, 1960, that the teenage Yorkshire swimmer struck Olympic gold in the 200m breaststroke, only one of two Brits to do so in that year’s summer games. In an era when the Olympics was for amateur athletes - unlike today’s sporting heroes, who have lottery funding to enable them to work full-time in their chosen events - Anita had to fit her preparation around her job, working in local government in Huddersfield.

Anita’s calmness was key to the race win and that report in the Mirror revealed an amazing factor behind it – a fly!

Early rising for swimming training before work and even at lunchtimes paid off that day when she faced her arch rival and favourite for the gold, Wiltrud Urselmann. However, the pre-race forecast was turned on its head as Anita won, beating the world-record holder by over half a second, in what the Daily Mirror described as “one of the most superbly-judged races in the history of sport.”

Coming off the back of that historic victory came a flood of accolades, beginning with a nomination for Sports Personality of the Year – or Sportsview Personality, as it was then known. But on this occasion she was pipped at the post by a surprise interloper, bronze medallist show-jumper, David Broome. Speculation was rife that this was because his sport was extremely popular at the time and received extensive TV coverage. However, Anita’s time would come.

“Just before the start I noticed it, exactly where I would dive,” Anita told the Mirror’s reporter. “For some queer reason I thought that I might swallow it! It was such a daft idea, I almost laughed. And that helped me to listen quite calmly for the starter’s gun.”

When she arrived back home in Huddersfield with her gold medal, Anita was given a civic reception by the Mayor and about a thousand people outside the Town Hall. Such occasions would become a regular occurrence for the immensely popular Yorkshire woman.

Anita was now truly a world class swimmer, having previously won gold medals at the Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff in 1958 in the 220yds breaststroke and 4 x 110yds medley relay. She had also gained a silver medal in the 200m breaststroke at the European championship. When wolverhampton west magazine

the Commonwealth Games came around again – in Perth, Australia – Anita struck gold three times in the 110 and 220yds breaststroke and 440yds individual medley. Her 1962 European championship gold medal in the 200m breaststroke brought considerable drama. A little off the pace at the 100m mark, Anita steadily inched her way in front to finally beat Dutch swimmer Klenie Bimolt and East German Ursula Kuper by about four feet. It was a triumph of pure endeavour, a moment when all her hours of training coalesced into glory.

“At the halfway stage I thought I’d had it,” Anita said afterwards, “but I kept telling myself ‘kick, kick kick.’ My legs feel like water now.”

Setting off at the flag waived by Mayor of Wolverhampton, Councillor Claire Darke, Hugh and his group of friends covered a distance of approximately 22.7 miles in around 90 minutes in rainy conditions better suited to swimming. A well-supported outdoor spin class took place at the same time in the finishing straight under the stand canopy. In total the effort raised £7,582.00.

And while Anita and Hugh’s most recent efforts will not break records and be recorded in the history books, they are more essential to our local community than ever before and well worth celebrating.

efore the year was out, Anita made more history when she was at last voted BBC Sportsview personality of the year, becoming the first woman to win the award. She was then made an MBE in 1963 for her services to swimming. At the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, Anita was given the honour of carrying the British flag at the opening ceremony and, though she only finished sixth in the individual medley final, she came away with something much more precious: her lifelong partner, Hugh. Anita and Hugh were then the golden couple of sport and today are as committed to charity fundraising as they are to each other. Both Anita and Hugh are patrons of Compton Care and recently organised a fundraising event, 80 for 80, which comprised 80 laps of Aldersley cycling track, to celebrate Hugh’s 80th birthday, in aid of the charity.

ockdowns may be largely lifted but we’re going back to a very different world at work and at school: many more of us are working from home at least some of the time, and school pupils and college students are getting used to doing more online learning.

That can be a challenge, because when most of us bought the things we have in our homes we weren’t thinking about using them for work – so for example dining tables may be great for chatting with family or friends, but they’re not ideal for long periods on a laptop. If you or others in your household are going to be spending longer periods working, especially on computers, comfort isn’t just nice: it’s essential. Spending too much time with poor posture or awkward working spaces can be bad for your health, as it increases the risk of physical stresses and strains. In some cases that can lead to painful repetitive strain injuries.

The good news is that you don’t need to do much to make your working or studying environment safe. It’s all about right angles: when you sit, your back should be straight, your feet flat on the ground (or on a footrest) and your body at right angles, so your forearms and your thighs should be horizontal and your back, upper arms and calves vertical. If you can afford it, invest in a good quality chair with back support and a decently padded or sprung base – your back and bum will thank you for it in the long term – and if you get one with wheels, invest in a floor protector too. Wheels can do serious damage to carpets and laminate flooring.

HELPING THE HELPERS Rotary faces up to Covid 19

‘Play Packs carefully created to support development of young children at home’

The five Rotary clubs across the city have been severely affected by the Covid19 crisis and major fundraising events have been cancelled. In normal times, the Wolverhampton club stages three large events each year to provide support for city organisations. Best Foot Forward, the annual community walk staged at Aldersley Stadium, which has raised over £130,000 since its inception seven years ago, and the Dragon Boat Challenge at Himley Park, which has raised over £400,000 in the nineteen years of its operation, have both become casualties of the pandemic. Club President Brian Bailey says “These are challenging times and we have had to make difficult, and unwelcome, decisions. We are very mindful that, with the loss of these two major events, city charities will be deprived of something in the order of £40,000 this year. We remain hopeful that our third fundraising project, the Tree of Remembrance in the Wulfrun Centre will be able to go ahead in December.” Despite these setbacks, the club has taken active measures in an attempt to continue to support local causes, particularly those that have suffered a loss of income and an increase in demand as a result of lockdown. By dipping into reserves, and backed up by personal donations from members, it has been possible to donate £2,000 to The Good Shepherd Ministry refuge for the homeless and rough sleepers, enabling the purchase of food. The Haven Refuge for the victims of domestic violence also received £2,000, which was used to purchase food and bedding The International Rotary Foundation, based in the USA, created a $3million fund to be used by 52

Rotary clubs across the world. The Wolverhampton share was used in a project to provide PPE Visors for volunteers and NHS workers at refuges, care homes and hospitals. The fund has also been used to donate social distancing packs to Compton Care shops to protect volunteers after the reopening of their shops. The packs comprise a screen for the cashiers, hand sanitising units, floor graphics and signs giving guidance to shoppers. As a result of its close connections with charities across the city, Rotary was approached by the James Beattie Charitable Trust to administer a £10,000 fund to distribute smaller grants to ad hoc and existing organisations that have been taking special measures to support local people suffering from Covid-19 issues. The Wolverhampton club, in conjunction with the other four city clubs, readily took up the task and a total of twenty grants, ranging between £280 and £750 have been quickly paid to groups providing such vital necessities as food and ‘play at home’ packs which are of great benefit to children coping with the emotional impact of the pandemic. Typical of these was the grant made to The Wolves Play Cafe, supporting children and carers through play. Working with Low Hill Nursery School, Play Packs were provided from the grant to support young children confined to home during this challenging time. Adds President Brian “There can be no doubt that the profound changes over these last few weeks mean that we, and Rotary Clubs throughout the world, have to accept the need to adapt and change. The pandemic has denied us of some of the means by which we raise our funds, while at the same time creating new levels of need in the communities we seek to serve. As we move from June into July and August there’s still time to plant larger pots of Geraniums, Fuchsias, Cosmos and Dahlias to fill in any gaps in borders.

Water to get established and feed on a weekly basis. Dead head regularly and you’ll have colour through to the first autumn frosts, which hopefully will be late starting. Keep sowing or planting salad crops such as lettuce, spinach, spring onions and radish in the veg patch to get a continuous harvest. Use very fine netting to cover cabbages, cauliflowers, carrots and other particularly susceptible vegetables against flies, pigeons and butterflies. Harvest peas and runner beans regularly whilst they are young and tender, freeze any spares for home grown vegetables during the winter months. Keep beans and peas moist and spray over the foliage to encourage pods to set. There’s plenty of choice in the herbaceous sections at the moment as well as the ever popular Lupins – there’s a large range of new Salvias, Monardas and Echinacea as well as Delphiniums and the butterfly-loving

Verbena bonanariensis and the ever popular perennial Geraniums. Hostas are good for a shady spot with their coloured foliage, watch out for the slugs though, especially if the ground is damp. Now is a good time to add new plants to your pond. There’s a good selection of marginal and deep water plants available. Keep marginals on a ledge at the edges of the pool and not too deep – Iris, Caltha, Primulas and Bulrushes are all good examples. For the middle/deeper parts of the pool water lilies are good and can give good protection for any fish you have in the pool. Most plants come ready planted in aquatic pots so just need placing into the pool. Don’t forget marginals need not be planted in the pool – if you have a damp, boggy area plants like Iris, Primulas and Lobelias will all grow happily.

For new potatoes in October, or at Christmas, plant seed potatoes in tubs in July and August. Growth will finish in October, leave the tubers in their pots until required for cooking. Remember they’ll need frost protection once the winter frosts appear in November and December. To complete another gardening cycle or start a new one depending on how you look at it the spring flowering bulbs will be appearing in garden centres from the end of August! If you want Hyacinths in flower for Christmas, they must be planted and put into a dark cool place in September. Most varieties require an 8-10 week cool period followed by 2-3 weeks of warmer conditions to bring them into flower. Use a compost specifically for bulbs as it will contain charcoal to keep the soil sweet.

we don’t mean what we say When a member of the online global community Reddit asked the question “Non-British people of Reddit, what about Britain baffles you?” they received almost 40,000 comments in response. Here are five things about British culture that particularly puzzle non-Brits:

1. SARCASM The British are famous for their sarcastic turn of phrase and a recent YouGov poll asked a group of Brits and a group of Americans to interpret the meaning of various well-known expressions and phrases. While most members of the British group took the expression “with the greatest respect” to have pretty much the opposite meaning, more than half of the American group took it at face value. One Reddit member, shocked at the way her British boyfriend spoke to his family members, wailed: “They’re so rude to each other. FOR FUN.”

Watching The Great British Bake Off, American Britt Rivera was shocked to find that a Yorkshire pudding wasn’t actually a pudding, tweeting “Yorkshire pudding is a little bread bowl, not a yogurt-like dessert?” With the exception of Australia and New Zealand, Britain is one of very few places where Marmite is actually enjoyed. Reddit users have conducted their own opinion poll on the famous spread, with one Slovenian contributor commenting: “I remember my first experience with Marmite was so terrible. Someone brought that thing to our house and I tried it with a spoon ... so disgusting!!”

3. UK ACCENTS According to the British Library, we have almost eighty different accents and dialects in the British Isles, so perhaps it’s not surprising that this was another frustration for overseas Reddit users. “So many accents. People fifteen minutes away having another accent,” one moaned.

4. OUR LOVE OF TEA Responding to Reddit’s “What about Britain baffles you?” challenge, another user stormed “Your obsession with tea!” Writing for The Week magazine, American author and journalist Jessica Pan describes how she sensed growing resentment amongst her English colleagues after regularly refusing their offers of tea: “I might as well have said ‘I do not want to be part of your society’ or ‘Your tea is gross and so are you.’ That’s because in Britain, I soon learned, rejecting a cup of tea is like rejecting a gesture of friendship.”

5. OUR MANY NAMES The many different names we use to describe our island nation has also caused a good deal of confusion, with some overseas observers unsure whether to call us Great Britain, the British Isles, the British Islands, the United Kingdom or just plain old Britain. To confuse things even further, the UK’s official name is the ‘United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland’. During our long and colourful history, British people have absorbed the best bits from several different cultures, so perhaps it’s not surprising that such a melting pot of habits and customs continues to cause bewilderment. It’s clear that our culture is seen by others as eccentric, weird, confusing – even a tad annoying – but it’s equally clear that we Brits have no intention of changing our ways for anyone.

enJoy The flavours of spain wiTh This classic rice dish. iT makes a greaT one-pan supper served wiTh crusTy bread and a green salad.

Ready in: 1 hour Serves: 4

Ingredients 1 tbsp virgin olive oil 225g chorizo, diced 1 large onion, chopped 275g paella rice Few strands saffron 1.1l fish or chicken stock Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 red pepper, deseeded and chopped 100g frozen peas 2 tsp paprika 250g cooked peeled prawns, thawed if frozen Few fresh mussels, scrubbed 68

Method Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan over a medium heat. Add the chorizo to the pan and fry for 3-4 minutes. Remove from the pan with a slotted spoon and set aside. Fry the onion in the pan juices for 5 minutes then stir in the rice and saffron and cook while stirring for 1 minute. Pour in the stock, season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring frequently. Return the chorizo sausage to the pan and add the pepper, peas, paprika and prawns. Simmer gently for a further 10 minutes until the rice is nearly tender and all the liquid has been absorbed, stirring occasionally. Top with the mussels and cover and cook for a further 4-5 minutes until the mussels open (discard any that do not open). Adjust the seasoning to taste then serve from the pan.

TIP To make a vegetarian version omit the chorizo, prawns and mussels and replace with a selection of vegetables of your choice, such as celery, green beans, chopped tomatoes and courgette. Use vegetable stock and fry a couple of crushed garlic cloves with the onion to give extra ďŹ&#x201A;avour. wolverhampton west magazine

Maple glazed pork with Mediterranean veg kebabs

Makes: 8 These chunky meat kebabs with a sweet sticky glaze are perfect for a barbecue or al fresco supper served with warmed flatbreads and salad.

Ingredients

Method

750g lean pork fillet, cubed

Place the cubed pork in a non-metallic container and add the lemon juice, half the oil and the dried oregano and garlic. Toss to coat then cover and leave to marinate in the fridge for 3-4 hours or overnight.

Juice of 1 lemon 2 tbsp olive oil 2 tsp dried oregano

Thread the pork, pepper, courgettes and red onion onto 8 long metal skewers. Cook on a preheated barbecue or under a hot grill for 10-15 minutes, turning frequently, until the pork is cooked through and the vegetables are lightly charred.

1 garlic clove, crushed 2 large red peppers, deseeded and cubed 2 courgettes, sliced 2 red onions, peeled and cubed

Meanwhile, mix the remaining oil, maple syrup, ketchup and mustard together and brush all over the kebabs for the last 2-3 minutes of cooking time, until glazed and sticky. Serve immediately.

It’s been a strange few months but thankfully things are getting back to normal, and the moment we’ve all been waiting for has arrived: we can finally get our hair done. Whether you’ve been struggling with DIY dye jobs or your locks are looking a little too ‘au natural’ there’s no doubt that you’re excited for a brand-new hair look this summer. And, the award-winning team at Royston Blythe can’t wait to get back to doing what they do best: making their clients look amazing. We caught up with Royston and Nick for a post-lockdown chat to find out the latest salon news, catch-up on all the gossip from the last four months and hear more about the excellent campaign they started to say ‘thank you’ to frontline NHS workers. So, how was lockdown for you guys? Royston: Well, we had a lot of

fun at home and we really enjoyed spending time together. I’ve discovered that I’m a pretty good gardener, I cleaned all the windows and Nick has done housework that he’s never done in his life! We spent a lot of time walking, eating and watching TV and we helped out friends, family and elderly residents in our hamlet who were struggling to get shopping.

During the lockdown, with so little choice of things to do, it may well be that a walk round the block became part of your daily routine.

being in a gym. From martial arts in the garden, online yoga and cycling to just that brisk walk round the block.

Exercise to boost your mood Aerobic exercises, where your heart rate is elevated, have been shown to help depression. They reduce your levels of cortisol (AKA the ‘stress hormone’). You could try jogging (using the Couch to 5K app to keep yourself motivated), a virtual exercise class or just dancing in your kitchen.

Exercise to ease anxiety Yoga and pilates can have a direct impact on your nervous system, helping to calm it down and ease anxiety. Some studies have shown that yoga can also be beneficial for tackling depression, alleviating stress and even reducing pain and blood pressure.

It’s our connections not our isolations that makes us stronger Local engineering firms have been designing ventilators and amazingly some pizza shops have been using their ovens to bend the plastic sheets to make shielding visors.

Nobody loves tough times, but there’s something about them especially in England that really brings out the best in people. I for one have loved the community spirit that’s been shown. In a time of isolation, it’s been amazing to see how many people rallied around. I’ve loved seeing all the rainbows painted on windows and outside houses while delivering essential medicines around the local area. I’ve loved clapping for our selfless NHS workers (although it would be nice if the government paid them all better too). I’ve seen at one end of the spectrum Women’s Institute groups and embroidery clubs sewing surgical gowns for the hospitals , and at the other end I’ve seen people with 3D printers, designing visor holders and printing them in the thousands. 98

So many people have pulled together during this time. I’ve been especially thankful to my team who in between answering calls from hundreds of patients in discomfort over lockdown and arranging to get them emergency tooth filling kits, recementing kits and essential medicine. They’ve rallied around and made temporary food banks for the community for those who were struggling financially. We had so many people come and bring food for families that were struggling to feed themselves and their kids. In conjunction with Tettenhall Round Table we managed to get goody bags to the nursing staff at the hospitals, who’d run out of toothpaste, toothbrushes and toiletries over this time. The boys at the Round Table got loads of sponsorship and donations and kindly delivered them to the grateful staff at New Cross Hospital. Let’s not forget Captain Tom who raised a phenomenal amount of money for NHS charities, an amazing achievement. New synergies have been formed such as Creative agencies like Jask Creative partnering

up with Wolverhampton-based homeless charity Good Shepherd who’ve helped people with mental health issues getting shelter. Haven, the Wolverhampton-based shelter for victims of domestic abuse, has seen a rise in domestic abuse and has done amazingly well at keeping victims safe during this unprecedented difficult time. There are thousands of other stories of people helping others out during this time, and I’m sorry that we’ve missed some out here. Us humans are supposed to live in communities, we’re designed to be tribal and each to have our own strengths and work together. By supporting each other we all become stronger. This won’t be the last pandemic we face but I’m positive that having seen the way our friends and businesses have rallied together, we will all come through this with massive innovation and significantly stronger than we’ve ever been. It’s a funny dichotomy but while in isolation, somehow, we’ve managed to connect even more. And if anything has come out of this time, this can only be a good thing.

TO A CHALLENGE Our mission is to help members keep healthy, play sport and make friends. It was important that during the lockdown we found ways to adapt and continue to help our members’ health and wellbeing. We achieved this by moving the gym classes ‘online’ with recordings available on our Facebook page and YouTube channel (Search wltsc) receiving over 50000 views to date.

Further government guidance allowed outdoor activity including Tennis, touchtennis and personal training. Reassured by all the safety measures that were put in place, Tennis proved very successful with over 300 of our members taking part with over 2500 bookings in total over our 13 Tennis courts (artificial grass, clay and grass). For our squash, racketball and gym users we also introduced touchtennis, a relatively new sport that is quick to learn and in 2 months had 780 bookings helping our tennis and non-tennis

players challenge themselves to learning a new sport. With the government continuing to relax measures, we shall ensure safety is paramount and will welcome all new and existing members. The History

of the Pandemic

By Catherine Rose Empire and millions of people died from its rapidly fatal effects. Another outbreak occurred during the Crimean War between 1853 and 1856. Nurse Florence Nightingale became famous at this time for her tireless efforts to improve unsanitary conditions.

A vaccine was created in 1885. Smallpox, caused by the variola virus, is one of the most devastating diseases. Various outbreaks have occurred over the centuries, the earliest around 10,000 BC. During the twentieth century alone, smallpox was responsible for up to five hundred million deaths worldwide. It was declared by WHO to be eradicated in 1980.

Despite our increased global mobility making pandemics more likely, diseases have crossed country borders for centuries.

ne of the earliest pandemics, the Justinian plague, began in 500 AD, spreading from Egypt into Palestine, the Byzantine Empire and then Europe. Similar to bubonic plague, it killed twenty-six per cent of the world’s population – around five hundred million – thwarting Roman Emperor Justinian’s plans to revitalise the Roman Empire. 1347 saw the first wave of the Black Death, a pneumonic form of bubonic plague – one of the most devastating pandemics in human history. Originating in Asia, it is likely to have travelled 102

along the Silk Route and then by ship into Europe. It is believed, as with later outbreaks,that it was spread via fleas contaminated with the yersinia pestis bacteria. The disease is estimated to have killed hundreds of millions of people worldwide and up to sixty per cent of the population in Europe. Characterised by a fever and buboes, the Black Death could kill within hours. It lasted until 1352 and had huge economic and social repercussions. Instances of bubonic plague returned over subsequent centuries. In 1665, the Great Plague of London killed twenty per cent of its population. The term ‘quarantine’ was coined in Venice referring to a period of forty days – the optimum time necessary for the spread of an epidemic to be contained. Cities that implemented quarantines were found to be less affected by fast-transmitting diseases. Numerous cholera pandemics began in Russia in 1815. Acquired through contaminated water and food, the British Army unwittingly spread this serious bacterial illness across the British

COVOD-19 is not the first pandemic virus to have originated in animals. The Spanish flu, which struck worldwide during 1918/19, is believed to have started in birds. Although nicknamed the Spanish flu, it appeared in Kansas, America in 1918. Due to World War I, many European countries had news blackouts and initial reports came from Madrid, leading people to believe it had begun in Spain. It was able to spread rapidly in the unsanitary and confined conditions of the trenches. Unlike regular flu, it targeted healthy young people and came at a time when populations had already been decimated. This flu was particularly deadly, leading to severe bronchial pneumonia. It infected a third of the world’s population and resulted in around fifty to one hundred million deaths. Today, we are better informed about the spread of disease, our lives are more sanitary and scientists can more easily predict outcomes and implement strategies that contain it.

Play to their interests Younger children often like ticking off a list of things to spot when they’re out, or collecting petals, leaves and pebbles for a craft activity. If your child is an animal lover, could you go on a bug hunt? If they enjoy solving puzzles, could you go geocaching or set up a treasure hunt? Active kids might enjoy a simple obstacle course in the garden or throwing balls to knock down tin cans.

Shake things up Most of us like a bit of variety in life. Even moving a swing to a different part of the garden or trying some different games can help to reignite a child’s interest. On a more practical level, a reorganisation of their bedroom or a shared space can be exciting for them.

Play games My eight-year-old loathes going for a walk. With a passion. And he doesn’t hesitate to let us know just how boring he finds it. So our family walks tend to be less about

walking and more about playing games on the move. His favourite is a game where we adults challenge the kids to impersonate an animal. When he was younger, it was a case of “Can you hop like a kangaroo?” “Can you slither like a snake?” Now it’s evolved into “Can you charge like a short-sighted rhino?” “Can you soar like an eagle with a broken wing?” We also play hide and seek and other games.

Build it into a routine If you have the option, it might be worth setting a family rule that you all have to spend a certain amount of time outside every day, even if it’s just bouncing round the garden.

Don’t be afraid of bribery I’m not suggesting you pay your child to get active, but there’s nothing wrong with promising an ice lolly or half an hour of screen time after a bike ride now and then.

to prepare or review a Will? The last few months have seen many changes for us all and as we adjust, self isolation and social distancing has led many to review their personal affairs to ensure these are up to date. One of the most important documents to help achieve this is a Will. A valid Will ensures your wishes are legally binding once you have passed away, helps you take control of how you wish to leave your estate and protects those you wish to benefit in the event of your death. Do not assume that your spouse will automatically inherit everything if you are married, or (if you are not married), that cohabiting for several years will lead to an automatic right to inherit. Recent statistics indicate the demand for Will writing services has increased by thirty percent as people seek certainty and peace of mind. This is not however without difficulties. Although telephone appointments are now the primary method for taking Will instructions, those who are most at risk and in need of a Will, for example those in care homes or in hospital, may still find it difficult to provide Will instructions in this way. In addition, if a capacity assessment is required this could prove a lengthy process given the current pressures on the NHS. Amongst the many other difficulties currently faced, executing Wills has become a real issue. The consequences of a Will being deemed invalid are severe and could mean that a personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s estate is distributed according to an

old Will or even under the rigid laws of intestacy, which could see unintended beneficiaries inheriting. It is therefore an important issue to get right. Some overseas Governments have introduced temporary emergency legislation; however, whilst the Government here is reviewing potential reform of the law on executing Wills there is unlikely to be emergency legislation or relaxation of the strict rules on execution that are designed to protect individuals.

The legislation around Wills is nearly 200 years old, dating back to 1837. Whilst modernisation is needed, any reform must be balanced against the important safeguards in place to protect vulnerable individuals against risks such as undue influence and fraud. One requirement for a validly executed Will that is causing particular difficulty is the requirement for the presence of two independent witnesses at the same time and who must each sign the Will in the presence of the person making the Will. The witness must be 18 or over and cannot be a beneficiary of the Will or their spouse/civil partner, as if one of them were to sign; they would lose any benefit under the Will. In reality most people are still only in contact with close family who are the intended beneficiaries of the Will and who therefore cannot be a witness. This is one of several traps to be mindful of, with the use of electronic signatures being another. Whilst the law allows electronic signatures

for deeds and other forms of contract, they are not valid for Wills. There are various ways to ensure you execute a valid Will in these times. The starting point is ensuring current Government guidelines regarding social distancing and isolation for those who need it are adhered to. During weeks of lockdown, housing sales across the UK plummeted. But as restrictions are being lifted, Jarna Rahman head of FBC Manby Bowdler’s Conveyancing team, takes a look at the aspects of buying and selling a home during a pandemic: Whilst buying and selling property wasn’t officially suspended during the lockdown, the restrictions on movement certainly had an impact.

The Government urged people to ‘adapt and be flexible’ and that was our mantra as well as we continued to work on clients’ property transactions so they were ready to take place when the time was right. When restrictions were lifted on May 14, estate agents could conduct in-person house viewings again and buyers could finally move into the homes they had completed on. You can put your house on the market and of course, speak to estate agents and do the preparatory work such as choosing an agent, a solicitor and arranging a mortgage. Guidance says physically distanced viewings that comply with public health advice are allowed. Hundreds of people celebrated international women’s day by attending Wolves Women’s Day 2020, held on Sunday 8th March (pre-lockdown) at the Light House complex in Wolverhampton. The event was organised by local non-profit Lotus Sanctuary as a fundraiser and platform to raise awareness about their supported housing and clinical therapy services which support the homeless and vulnerable women throughout the Black Country.
