Introducing internationally recognised dental implant surgeon Jonathon Pugh BDS MSc Wolverhampton based dental implant surgeon Jonathon Pugh BDS MSc is recognised as an international expert in the patient-centric care of people who have lost or who are losing their teeth. Jon was born and educated in Birmingham, graduating from the University of Birmingham in 1987 with honours and a distinction in clinical dentistry. His MSc in implant dentistry was completed at Warwick University, again with distinction, and he has been placing and restoring dental implants for over 27 years. He moved to Wolverhampton in 1991 and has focused his practice here. He currently operates at the Parkdale Dental and Implant Clinic. Due to Jon’s extensive experience the Clinic is recognised as a centre of excellence. Jon has recently attended an alignment meeting and alumni event for Pro Arch Centres of excellence in Lisbon, Portugal. The alignment meeting was hosted by Professor Joao Carames of the Instituto de Implantologia whilst the alumni meeting was hosted by Straumann a world leading implant company Jon has worked with his entire professional career.

All aspects of treatment are undertaken at the Clinic but Jon’s main area of interest is in helping people through the process of tooth loss to rehabilitation with implant borne replacement teeth. This process involves the placement of multiple Straumann implants with or without immediate loading. Which means, that if certain criteria are met, new fixed replacement teeth can be fitted in a day.

If you’re considering dental implants or are having issues with uncomfortable or misfitting dentures, please contact the Parkdale Dental & Implant Clinic.

from the editor Welcome to summer. It’s officially arrived after many, many miserable attempts at it over the last few years.

As I write the mercury is soaring and the Met Office is issuing warnings about an imminent heatwave, so it’s pretty safe to say we’re in for a treat over the coming months. Soon roads will melt, workers will be sent home; schools will close, ball boys at the Wimbledon Championships will pass out – in short, the country will grind to a halt. So we’re taking all that on faith and running with it for this, our sizzling hot July edition. It’s a special one for us too because this is Wolverhampton West’s 99th – that’s right, we’re 99 not out (if only England’s cricketing batsmen could knock up numbers like that I may have more confidence when they face their ‘Indian summer’) and with our 100th edition already in the can, nothing can stop us turning in a Ton. So in tribute, I’m off to order a ‘99’ from the ice cream man... Holidays, homes, hair, health and Heaven is as good a way to kick off (sorry, too much World Cup makes me prone to puns) as any, so here goes: we’ve got loads of health and beauty this time, climb the stairway to Heaven in Shifnal to discover the latest from Deborah Mitchell, the Medispa – it’s a lot easier than searching the jungle for the Fountain of Youth and twice as potent – you’ll be stunned by the results. Then repair your hair after the sun damage with a session in the salon at Royston Blythe: you’ll be left looking radiant afterwards. Ready to preen and pose on our Social pages even, perhaps – anyway, we have 10 pages of them for you this time. And plenty of Fashion inside to help you cut a dash wherever you go. With so much sport on the TV right now you’re going to want to do your bit to get fit so gorge yourselves on copy so full of life and energy you’ll lose a pound or two just reading it: Chris Jewkes Fitness, WV Active and South Staffs Leisure are where it’s at for burning fat. OK, so now to develop skills: tennis anyone? With the Wimbledon 04

Championships and Murray Mania soon to be in full force, we recommend Wolverhampton Lawn Tennis and Social Club. Golf is greatest in weather like this so brush up on your skills with our top tips, look in on South Staffs Golf Club’s coach Mark Shervill’s ode to keeping golf in the family – and with the school holidays on the horizon, why not? Getting into sport at an early age is key, but getting your child into a top-notch nursery is essential, so check out Tettenhall Road-based newcomer Berrington Lodge. Of course it’s holiday season so we’ve got lots of that but for anyone interested in a home from home, look long and hard at the new luxury apartments from Tatton Hall Homes in Wightwick and then read all about the local property market from our favourite estate agent Berriman Eaton. Staying put? We’ve got lots of good stuff about improving your home and garden as well. In fact, we even cater for those of you on the move with everything for the happy-camper at Cannock Caravan Accessories. Next up: food. And lots of it: Cosford Food Festival is back because 2017 left visitors so damn hungry for more. We have big-nightout food reviews at Wolverhampton Racecourse and Casino 36 to whet your appetite; Halfpenny Green Vineyards will provide the

perfect companion to any and every meal. While The Mount Hotel Country Manor in Tettenhall seals the deal: it’s now our only AA-rated 4* hotel and is well worth a visit, whether for your wedding – that’s right Harry and Meghan, other people do actually get married as well, as our The Other Wedding of the Year feature highlights – or just a jolly good feed in its 2* AA Rosette-rated restaurant. Talking of weddings, we have some great information inside – you can even win one at South Staffs Council’s new ceremonial suite in Codsall. In fact you can win much more than this because we have competitions for tickets at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre, Cosford Food Festival and Horizons restaurant at Wolverhampton Racecourse. Beyond this there’s news on all the terribly cute English summer-time affairs, like Claverly Flower Show, Pattingham Classic Car Show and Tettenhall Fete. Let’s hope the weather is kind to them all – and to Penkridge Market too, which braves it all year round in the cold. So, whether you’re going away or stopping at home, enjoy the summer while it lasts. See you in September…

Jewellery Design and Silversmithing Let me introduce you to Sophie, she is our new jewellery designer at Henns Family Jewellers. Sophie will be able to help you create a personal piece of jewellery from either a collection of heirlooms or convert an idea you have into a reality. Sophie recently graduated from Plymouth College of Art with a degree in Jewellery Design and Silversmithing. She has made and designed pieces of jewellery since then including the words ‘I love you’ into a unique sound register profile, which can then be mounted as a ring, pendant or brooch. Quite a talking point. Sophie has also worked with

jewellery making processes and can convert your ideas into wax and resin versions of the same, enabling you to ‘try on’ the item before we commit it to precious metal.

To be able to spend up to 30 minutes with Sophie so she can chat with you and sketch out some of your ideas, email info@tahenn.com for an appointment, this initial consultation is free of charge, coffee included! Currently she is not here all the time so an appointment is essential for you not to be disappointed. If you are looking to use your existing items do bring them all in along with any other bits you don’t wear. They may help pay for the whole exercise, and we will transfer the sentimental value into your new piece.

The local

property market by Nick Berriman

Over the years when I have been writing this page I have often reflected on actions which can be taken to make properties more saleable. These have included ensuring that the first impression of viewers is as good as possible by having a neat front garden, having clean front windows, a freshly painted front door with polished fittings, a tidy interior and, if there are pets a sweetly smelling interior! We are sometimes astonished how some people leave their houses for viewings. Dirty crockery in the sink, unmade beds and untidy rooms. I even remember one viewing where the hall radiator was draped with the owner’s underwear! I thought it was time I looked at the selling process from the other side and considered what 10

prospective buyers should look for and what actions they should take. It is said that viewers make a decision within a very short time “but act in haste and repent at leisure” has some truth in it. The first thing to try to assess is whether the property is genuine and “honest”. Obvious repainting of part or touching up of décor leads one to wonder what has been covered up. Always remember the seller is not under an obligation to disclose any faults although they must not deliberately mislead. Ask why they are selling – and try to decide whether they are telling the truth! They are obliged to disclose before the exchange of contracts any disputes with neighbours but look around for any signs of noisy neighbours or any possible likely sources of noise or disruption. Barking dogs can be a problem but perhaps a friendly neighbour has taken his dog out for the duration of the viewing. An unannounced drive past might shed some light on that problem. Noise from local roads and motorways can be a considerable annoyance. Remember that the prevailing wind is from the west and will blow road noise with it. Also remember that wet roads create more noise than dry ones.

news for some properties but conversely will also benefit others. If any of the above makes you unsure about any property on our books just ignore what you have read – it is obviously a load of rubbish! Our current market report is that sales have been good in the last month but the supply of properties is still restricted. Indeed there have been several instances of multiple offers and some leading to sales at above the guide price. The RICS Survey for the last month paints a general gloomy national picture but does highlight the West Midlands as one of four regions where there has been an increase in new buyers and in sales achieved. The survey also reports that the average number of properties available in Estate Agents’ offices was about 45. I find that remarkable as we have about four times that number. If you are wondering whether this is a good time to sell believe me when I say that it is. The time of year is right, hopefully the weather will be good for the next few months and demand is there. We look forward to hearing from you!

Something that always surprises me is that many people do not consider which way the property faces. This makes a significant difference to how much sun the house and the garden will enjoy. Many people seem not to think about this. Obvious things like damp are not difficult to notice but this sort of thing is really the job of a specialist surveyor. Broadband speed is important in this day and age as is mobile reception. Flight paths are not really relevant in our area but things like the possible resurrection of the Western Orbital Motorway need some thought. That particular road, if ever built, will be bad wolverhampton west magazine

Struggling financially, yet own your own property?

A little while ago, I was on holiday in Mexico and got talking to a couple from Northampton who were enjoying their holiday of a lifetime. They told me that they were ‘skiing’ and when they saw the look of confusion on my face because, let’s face it Mexico is not famed for this particular winter sport, they laughed and advised me that S.K.I. stood for, ‘Spending the Kids Inheritance!’ Apparently, their kids had grown up, were self-sufficient and had suggested that they use their money to go and visit Europe. 14

It was a lovely story and had me recalling that Age Partnerships had a stab at calculating the value of property owned by over 55s in the UK and came up with a figure of around £1.2 trillion. Many over-55 are property rich, but cash poor and an Equity Release or a Lifetime Mortgage could be the answer to help people improve their lifestyle. Depending upon age and the property value, an amount is calculated, which can be released to either provide an income to supplement a meagre pension, or generate a lump sum, which can be spent on anything from repaying that interest only mortgage that has become due, to home improvements or from

landscaping the garden to going on that holiday of the lifetime. There is, however, a caveat and that is life time mortgages are not for everybody and that is why it is important that before you make that decision to proceed, you are in an informed position. Ideally, it should be made after consultation with your family and an advisor should always encourage you to be accompanied by relatives and/or a friend when you meet with them. There are different schemes available, the main two being: • Lifetime Mortgages. This is where you borrow a proportion of your home’s value. Interest is charged on the amount, which wolverhampton west magazine

can either be repaid, or rolled up and you have the right to life in your property until you die, have to move into long term care or sell your home. When interest is rolled up, you make no payments and over the period of the loan, the debt will increase, meaning that it will reduce the value of your estate, which will impact on the inheritance you may want to pass on to the beneficiaries in your will. There is a ‘no negative equity’ guarantee available on this scheme, which means that if your debt rolls up higher than the value of your property, the maximum the lender can recover is the value of your property.

Despite this, many people are looking at their homes as a way of generating cash and improving their lifestyle. If you feel as though this may be the solution for you, your first step is to sit down with your family and chat it through. We do have a lifetime mortgage specialist available to answer all your questions and ascertain if looking at the possibility of releasing equity is right for you. Your home is at risk if you do not keep up repayments on a mortgage or other loan secured on it.

• Home Reversion. This is where you sell a share of your property to the loan provider for less than the market value, but you have the right to stay in your home for the rest of your life. When you die or move into longterm care and the property is sold, the provider gets the same share of whatever proportion your home sells for as repayment. For example, if you sold 25% of your property to the lender, they would get 25% of the sale price. It should be noted that means tested benefits such as pension credit and council tax benefits could be reduced as a result of becoming cash rich and there can be substantial early repayment charges should you decide to repay the mortgage. www.wolverhamptonwestmag.co.uk

On-Trend

home interior style There’s never been a better time to make some changes in your home, ready for the summer.

Dark wood furniture is totally on-trend for 2018 and provides a really dramatic look in any room. On-trend texture From embellished cushions to wicker lampshades, texture is a huge trend this year. Whether you want to embrace the trend fully by opting for a full set of wicker furniture or simply hint at it with the placement of some macramé cushions, you’ll love the interesting look textured pieces add to your décor. Heavy metal Copper and rose gold metal accents have been a popular home décor choice for some years now but for 2018 the metal of choice is undoubtedly brass. Brass accessories, like mirrors and lamps, look beautiful paired with rich colours and make for a really sophisticated look. What’s more, if you don’t want to invest in big décor changes, you can easily update your look with the addition of some brass pieces. Marvellous marble

Get to grips with grey Grey is still a favourite neutral colour choice and its popularity is ever increasing. Whether you opt for the lightest version of the hue or a darker shade, your room will be updated in an instant. Opt for a pop of colour Brighten up grey walls with some carefully chosen pops of colour. Soft furnishings in 16

bright, bold, vibrant shades are just the thing for injecting some personality into your room. Don’t be afraid to mix statement colours, patterns and prints. A new look for wood Light, bleached woods have been a style staple for a long time but now it’s time to step over to the dark side and embrace a different furniture look.

Marble is a must-have for 2018. It’s the perfect accompaniment to lighter colour schemes and the high street is full of marble effect accessories – everything from bed linen and cushions to lamps and even wallpaper. Whatever your home interior style, enjoy updating your look this year. Check out what our advertisers have to offer today! wolverhampton west magazine

What's going on in the world of

kitchen design?

Whether you’re simply refreshing your tired kitchen or extending your property, now’s the perfect time to plan your dream kitchen at Carvers. The industrial look is huge right now… from sultry greys, textured woods and mixtures of metals such as brass and copper. Homeowners are looking for more diversity and are being braver with key elements of their design choices. Splashbacks for example, whether coloured glass, smoked mirror, or rust finish patinas allow for strong statements to be made which are relatively easy to update in a few years when current trends move on.

Another colour to watch out for this year is blue… from indigo inks to baby blue and teal. Blue is the statement colour of the moment. Many high-end designs feature dark blues with exposed brickwork, a trend that is popular among the team at Carvers. With homeowners investing and extending, open plan living remains as strong as ever and islands or breakfast bars can also work as both a storage area and a place for dining. Add further value to your island by installing technology – the addition of a boiling water tap, down draft hood and induction hob or even a wireless phone charger, will mean everyone can get involved at meal times. Where better to showcase your collection of wines, than an island with a wine cooler?

If you’re still saving for that dream kitchen (did you know Carvers now offer interest free credit ?) then a simple kitchen make-over can make the world of difference. Bright wall tiles mixed with open shelving is becoming increasingly popular with homeowners able to make a statement in their kitchen by adding their own personality, like our KitchenAid mixers on display. It’s the perfect chance to add lots of greenery with bright, airy kitchens providing the perfect setting for house plants and herbs. With wall units removed, it’s often a great idea to think about tall larder storage for those unsightly essentials and supermarket own brand goods. Even though handleless designs still account for 50% of our sales, handles are coming back! Think bold, beautiful handles against modern kitchens and delicate bright coppers, rose golds and chrome knobs on painted shakers. A perfect combination!

Why not call in to see one of Wolverhampton’s best kept secrets, where the Carver team will talk you through over 20 kitchen displays, and 25 bathrooms! A full design and installation service is available and we also offer flexible finance packages that can help make your new kitchen more affordable.

Pastel pallets are really popular this year. The use of colour in the kitchen is extremely important and should reflect homeowners’ personalities and their needs. For instance, a space for cooking should be light and bright, while spaces designed for entertaining could have a darker essence to provide a suitable ambience. We’re seeing tones of pink, coppers and brass throughout 2018. Our latest showroom display has copper handles, a copper tap and even a copper flecked worktop!

Sparkling sunflowers return for charity appeal Wolverhampton’s Compton Care has launched its annual Spring Appeal which gives supporters the opportunity to take home a ‘one of a kind’ purple sunflower sculpture.

The sunflowers are made of wrought iron and stand at just under one metre tall. The petals are purple in colour and the central seeds are made of cracked glass which will reflect particles of sunlight as they sway gently in the breeze. The sunflower figures are exclusive to Compton Care and are not available to buy in stores or garden centres. Georgina Grainger, Fundraiser for Compton, said: “We have received hundreds of orders for our beautiful sunflowers since the appeal launched. We would urge anyone who is interested in placing an order to do so soon as they are flying off the shelves. “Lots of people have been buying the sculptures in memory of their loved ones who have been cared for by Compton, whilst others have been buying them to brighten up their gardens.

The charity, which supports people living with complex and incurable conditions, hopes to raise £30,000 from the Petals of Purple appeal which would fund the equivalent of 145 visits by a Compton nurse to a patient in their own home. 22

This is the third and final year Compton is holding its summer sunflower appeal. Its previous two appeals raised more than £70,000 towards helping to continue to deliver care and support to local people living with complex and incurable conditions. As part of the latest appeal, supporters are being asked to wolverhampton west magazine

consider sponsoring or purchasing a sunflower to add to their collection. Compton Care patient Jackie Kennedy has been attending the Day Therapies Centre since January 2017. She said: “I’ve been receiving support from Compton since January 2017. I visit the Compton Day Therapies Centre every Thursday and honestly, it’s changed my life! The staff at Compton have a way of making you feel like there is nothing wrong with you. Yes I am terminal, but that isn’t how I feel. I wake up in the morning, and I feel like I can take on the day. That’s because of Compton. “Last summer, one of the highlights of my weekly visit to the day centre was to see hundreds of sparkling sunflowers spread across the lawns as I arrived. They were so beautiful to see and were a real talking point. They brought such warmth and joy to my visits. “I’m very excited to let people know that these shimmering sunflowers

will be back once more and this time with colourful petals of purple. I hope lots of people will support this appeal and purchase a sunflower and when planting your sunflower maybe you’ll think of someone who was special to you or perhaps you’ll think of me – knowing that because of your donation you’re helping people like me to live the best life possible thanks to the support of Compton Care.” Supporters are kindly asked to consider donating a minimum of £5 to sponsor a sunflower or £20 to purchase. People can also visit the display in all its glory when visiting Compton Hall and share their sunflower selfies on social media using the hashtag #comptonpetalsofpurple. Brewood 10KM (aka Woggle) is back for a 5th successive year!

The month of September is the month when runners get back into serious training and competition mode after their summer break: so, what better than to enter the Brewood 10km race? Now in its fifth year, it has been transformed from a fun run attracting around 50 runners from the local community to a fully marshalled, timed and measured race with over 200 participants. This doesn’t mean that the race has lost its family feel and atmosphere, there are still homemade cakes at the end for the hungry runners and great support from locals on the route.

However there is a serious side to the run as it forms part of the Brewood Scout’s fundraising campaign to build a new Scout Hut. The old hut has been earmarked for demolition and is lacking in modern facilities. The Brewood 10km together with its sister event – The Brewood Cycle Challenge have now become established events on the fundraising calendar. Event organiser – Beccy Jones-Reading, herself a London Marathon runner, commented: “The success of the Brewood 10km has been a major contributor to our fundraising calendar and we are very pleased with the growth in runner numbers

each year. We are very thankful that we have some fantastic volunteers who tirelessly work to make the event run as smoothly as possible”. The run takes place on Sunday 23rd September, starting from St Dominic’s Grammar School in Brewood. There are children’s races at 9am for under 8’s and under 12’s with the main event starting at 10am. Entries are open via Run Britain: contact: www.brewoodwoggle.com or our Facebook page for more information. We are also looking for marshals, if you can help, please let us know.

The route takes you through the beautiful countryside around Chillington Hall before weaving towards the village centre via the killer Dean Street hill. The race attracts serious runners and newcomers alike as the route is mainly flat and fast and the finish attracts a carnival type atmosphere with runners finishing to applause by onlookers in the village square. 24

mocktails, making tasty treats or even sitting down to enjoy a picnic style lunch, you can let them have as much fun as they like without worrying about the mess. Al fresco dining

Make the most of those lazy summer days by firing up the barbecue and serving-up some fuss-free meals that are perfect for enjoying outdoors. Summer dining is all about simplicity so don’t spend hours worrying what to serve, simply opt for some tear and share breads – complete with dips, of course – tasty savoury tarts, delicious bruschetta, freshly prepared pasta salad and homemade coleslaw – the perfect accompaniment to barbecued meats.

The summertime is all about relaxing, catchingup with family and friends and enjoying spending time outdoors. So, why not turn your outdoor space into the perfect place for socialising this summer?

or outdoor fireplace – just the thing for those long nights. Family fun If you’ve got kids to entertain this summer then take the fun outdoors. Create a child-friendly seating area that’s complete with a large table – that’s suitable for all sorts of crafts, painting and games - and add colourful bunting, balloons and fairy lights and let the kids get busy. Whether it’s creating works of art with paints, glue and glitter, mixing

As for sweet treats, think mini strawberry cheesecakes, lemon tart with summer berries or a classic fruity Pavlova. Don’t forget those must-have summertime drinks too: sangria pitchers, ice-cold beer and homemade strawberry lemonade. If you love cooking outdoors, why not treat yourself to a garden pizza oven? Whatever get-togethers you’ve got planned this summer make them extra special by stepping outside.

Evening entertainment It doesn’t take much effort to transform any outside space into an ideal entertaining area. Simply clear the clutter, tidy up the garden and install some extra-comfy outdoor furniture. Use fairy lights, lanterns and stylish accessories to help to create the right mood and then, kick-back, relax, pour a large glass of wine and enjoy watching the sun go down. If you’ve got plenty of room outside you could make your outdoor space even more special with the addition of a firepit 26

RECIPE

Green Gooseberry Jam This wonderfully tart jam goes well with scones and cream or creme fraiche and makes a lovely filling for Victoria sandwich cakes. Makes: 2 jars (approximately) Preparation and cooking time: 1 hour Equipment: • Cooking thermometer • Jam jars • Saucer - the saucer should be placed in the freezer to keep it cold. INGREDIENTS • 900g Slightly under-ripe gooseberries, topped and tailed • 900g-1kg Granulated sugar • 600ml water METHOD 1. First wash your jam jars in hot soapy water, then rinse well. Put them into a preheated oven at 160°C/gas 3 until you are ready to use them. 2. Put the fruit and water only into a large, heavy-based saucepan. Bring to the boil, then simmer gently until the skins are soft. If you add the sugar the skins will not soften. 3. Add the sugar and stir over a low heat until it has dissolved completely. Don’t boil the jam before the sugar has dissolved or it may crystallise during storage. Once the sugar has 30

dissolved bring the jam to a rapid but steady boil and boil until it reaches a temperature of between 105°C and 110°C. 4. After about 15 minutes your jam should have become more viscous and clear and you will need to see whether setting point has been reached. This is called the ‘wrinkle test’. Remove the saucer from the freezer. Take the pan off the heat, spoon a little jam onto the plate and leave until completely cold. Then push it across the plate with your forefinger. It should wrinkle up if it’s ready. If it only wrinkles

slightly, pop the saucer back in the freezer and bring the jam back to the boil and boil for a few more minutes. 5. Skim any scum from the top of the jam and pour it into the prepared jars. Cover the surface of the jam with waxed discs, wax-side down, and either quickly cover each jar with a dampened round of cellophane and rubber band or leave to go cold before covering with cellophane or a screw-top lid. Sealing the jars well prevents the build-up of condensation under the lid, which could lead to mould. wolverhampton west magazine

Industrial & Vintage Lighting at L i g h t i n g R U s In the big, wide, world of fashion, we are always seeing old trends making a comeback. The same follows for interior design. An old trend that has made a bold return, is industrial lighting. In the past couple of years, we have seen a growing number of industrial products coming from our suppliers, and they’re becoming increasingly popular in your homes. The trend is looking extremely established right now, so we thought it was about time we shined a light on it. In the words of British Courtesy of Chalon Kitchens

lifestyle brand Laura Ashley: “don’t think dirt and heavy machinery, think beautiful brass tones and gorgeous shapes.” This couldn’t be more spot on with regards to industrial lighting. Many of our suppliers produce beautiful vintage products, but we would be lying if we told you we didn’t have a favourite! Based in London, Industville are a leading retailer of industrial styled lighting, accessories, and vintage LED bulbs. Their range includes vintage, industrial and retro products for homes, restaurants, hotels, bars as well as coffee shops. Industville love creating unique and hand-crafted lighting designs. Furthermore, they love creating designs that can come in a variety of ways. They have adapted all their products for this purpose. Utilising many shapes, styles, and finishes, is a great way of creating an eye-catching lighting concept within any size or style of project.

You may have seen some of their lighting and furniture products in some of the UK’s most wellknown establishments. This would include Costa, Starbucks, Zizzi’s, Jamie’s Italian, and Gordon Ramsey’s restaurants! All of Industville’s products can be purchased from our website www.lightingrus.co.uk, or alternatively, visit our Aldersley showroom, in Wolverhampton to see Industville on display!

Carver

Half Marathon Events

Entries are coming in daily for the annual Carver Half Marathon Events. After taking the decision to remove the Full Marathon from the event programme last year, the organisers are focusing on the more popular distances, the Carver Half Marathon and the Banks’s 10k. There have been some minor changes to the routes taking in a lap inside West Park before entering the finish straight. Further adjustments have been made to the Pendeford section and it is hoped that the runners will

approve of the re-designed parts of the course. Both routes have now been re-measured and certified. For those new to running there are easy to follow training programmes on our website and advice can be sought from Wolverhampton & Bilston Athletics Club. www.wolvesandbilstonac.co.uk After listening to feedback from the riders last year, there have been improvements made to the Cousin’s 20K cycle event, the route no longer takes riders through I54 and is approximately the same 20k distance. The 10K cycle event follows the same route as the Banks’s 10K. Hugh Porter and his team of experienced cyclists have devised a safer course with new signage. Paycare are the latest company to join the list of sponsors this year and they now sponsor the children’s run. Likewise Call Print sponsor the Walk in The Park. We are really grateful to all our sponsors and hope everyone appreciates the importance of being involved with such a big community event in our city. We need lots of people to come out and take part and support this event. All entry fees go to our nominated charities. This year we will be supporting Compton Care (Compton Hospice), Give Us a Break Wolverhampton, Wolverhampton & Bilston Athletics Club and The Mayoral Charity Fund. Information about the charities and the amazing work they do in the community can be found on our website www.carverwolverhamptonhalfmarathonevents.co.uk.

BJ’s Charity

Bike Ride and Walk

In 2009 following a brave fight against cancer for 4 years BJ Khela passed away. To honour his memory his siblings Pete Khela and Kami Aujla decided to raise funds for charity. As BJ was a keen cyclist a bike ride was organised and has become an annual event with the schedule being: 2010: Wolverhampton to Windsor 2011: Wolverhampton to Wembley

2016 took place in the Peak District from Buxton to Bakewell along a disused train line with views to many valleys. 2017 saw the walk take place in Llangollen, Wales which happily coincided with a Victorian fayre taking place at the local steam railway station. The hardest part of the walk was the steep climb to the castle at the top of a hill, but the views were well worth it. The 2018 walk was arranged for Ross-On-Wye in Herefordshire. 40 walkers aged from 6 years old to 74 years old began at the historic Goodrich Castle, which was an

ancient fortification protecting the local area. After some time in the countryside and woods, the walk then descended to the river Wyre and then followed its meandering route. Sheep and horses were encountered along the way. An estate, Courtfield, was passed where Henry V used to occasionally reside. At Symonds Yat the route then turned towards Coppets Hill. This was a steep and seemingly never ending climb through ancient woods. This led eventually to a ridge where the land banked downwards on both sides. The walk then levelled out to a small plateau where a short break was taken for sandwiches where the views were nearly 360 degrees. Then it was a very steep descent ending back at Goodrich Castle. A brief tour was made of the castle, which was then followed by a delicious cream tea that was enjoyed by one and all. The coach was then boarded for the journey back to Wolverhampton where everyone was able to relax together at the evening meal. The charities supported from the 2018 ride and walk will be Cancer Research, The Steve Bull Foundation, Alzheimer’s (dementia), Unicef and Unique home for girls.

2012: Wolverhampton to Brighton 2013: Wolverhampton to Paris 2014: London to Liverpool 2015: Great Yarmouth (UK) to Galway (Ireland) 2017: Wolverhampton to Bournemouth In 2014 an annual charity walk was added following the passing of Gurmel Singh, father of Bijay, also from cancer. The first year was a 10 mile walk to Stratford upon Avon. 2015 was a walk in the beautiful Cotswolds at Broadway village. 40

A recent undertaking has been to fund a replacement handle for one that was missing from one of the urns at the front of the house. Summer Gardening

As we move from June into July and August there’s still time to plant larger pots of Geraniums, Fuchsias, Cosmos and Dahlias to fill in any gaps in borders. Water to get established and feed on a weekly basis. Dead head regularly and you’ll have colour through to the first autumn frosts. Hanging Baskets need liquid feeding weekly - even with the slow release fertilisers added to composts, you’ll see the extra benefits from liquid feed. Baskets soon dry out especially when they’re sheltered from rain at the side of a house so watering morning and night in very warm weather is a must. Tomatoes and cucumbers need water regularly during hot weather

– preferably in the morning – this keeps the atmosphere humid and prevents the plants staying damp overnight which can cause problems with powdery mildew or botrytis – this is especially true for cucumbers as they can be very susceptible to mildew. Remove any badly infected leaves. Now is a good time to add new plants to your pond. Keep marginals on a ledge at the edges of the pool and not too deep – Iris, Caltha, Primulas and Bulrushes are all good examples. For the middle/deeper parts of the pool water lilies are good and can give good protection for any fish you have in the pool. Don’t forget marginals need not be planted in the pool – if you have a damp, boggy area plants like Iris, Primulas and Lobelias will all grow happily.

Tips are provided by Ann Winwood, Lealans Garden Centre, Wolverhampton There’s still time to treat moss on lawns with M O Bacter if the weather is not too dry and we have regular supplies coming in. For moss and weed control use Evergreen Complete. To complete another gardening cycle or start a new one depending on how you look at it the spring flowering bulbs will be appearing in garden centre’s from the end of August! If you want Hyacinths in flower for Christmas, they must be planted and put into a dark cool place in September. Most varieties require an 8-10 week cool period followed by 2-3 weeks of warmer conditions to bring them into flower. Use a compost specifically for bulbs as it will contain charcoal to keep the soil sweet.

Making your driveway an integral part of your

landscape

By Andi Way, Garden Designer, at Boningale Garden Creations

Your driveway is an important part of your garden because it gives a first impression of your home – they call this ‘kerb appeal’, making the approach to your home attractive and appealing. However, it is also likely that your driveway will be driven on every day. That means in addition to looking good, it needs to be durable and functional. A well-designed driveway will take into account the surrounding landscape as well as your home’s architectural style and car parking needs. The four main issues that a designer considers when creating and building a driveway are access, safety, drainage and aesthetics. Materials are the most important component in the design and with so many options, from block paving, flag paving and Tarmac to resin bound and loose gravel, to choose from, it may feel overwhelming. It’s important to look at the width and layout of your driveway to see which will work best but ultimately, your budget and design goals will determine what you choose. A good designer will advise

Here Andi provides 5 different style ideas for creating attractive driveway landscapes. 1. Elegance. Create kerb appeal with an elegant paved driveway that is bordered by a classic planting combination of evergreen hedging and colourful scented blooms. 2. Clean and green. Create an inviting and lush planting scheme by layering all-green foliage plants. These will also require less maintenance as compared to perennials.

on the pros and cons of each material and may also suggest additional ideas, such as multiple colours to create a pattern, combining materials or decorative borders, lighting or gates. While many homeowners understandably want to maximise the space they have to park their cars safely on their property, try not to create a car park. Planting softens the hardscaping, creates a more inviting space and assists with drainage, but choose carefully the shrubs and plants that will be used in the borders alongside driveways – check for overhang, maximum growth and spread. From our award-winning garden designer Andi Way to our horticultural specialists and project management team, who oversee and manage the project from start to finish, you are assured of expert advice every step of the way.

3. Large and proud. For large driveways, you want hard materials that complement the landscape (so it doesn’t look like a car-park) and the planting scheme should be designed to look like a garden – not practical. Consider using attractively planted and colourful ‘cottage garden style’ flower beds. For long driveways, break-up lawn areas with a mix of leafy evergreens, bright foliage and colourful accents. Depending on the design of the space, an informal meadow garden can also be very attractive and cost effective for large expanses. 4. Minimalist. Keep things simple with a single variety of plant — this could be an evergreen shrub, an ornamental grass or topiary – strategically planted along the length of the driveway. This works well with contemporary styled homes. 5. Short and sweet. Even small driveways provide the opportunity to make a design statement with plantings. If you are short of space for borders, swap some of the paved areas with walkable ground covers and complement with colourful potted plants and glorious hanging baskets.

Switching your ISA is easy, so why don’t more people do it? Are people missing out by not switching their ISA? It’s possibly a perception that there are 100 forms or a list of hoops that must be jumped through before your ISA could be considered for transfer from one provider from another. That’s a myth! In the most part, a couple of short forms are all it takes and the provider you are transferring to takes care of everything, they even contact the existing provider. Dudley Building Society requests are progressed within 24 hours from receipt so it won’t be long until the transfer is complete and you are ready to continue to save in the 18/19 tax year. The range of ISAs available across the market provides many choices for individuals with different financial circumstances, so no one should be afraid to go and discuss the possibilities with their local bank or building society. In most cases, and

56

especially in that of Dudley Building Society, there are friendly, knowledgeable advisers that are on hand and happy to discuss what accounts may be best suited to someone’s specific saving requirements. The Society’s ISA range includes a 45 day notice, one and five year fixed, instant access and junior account options as well as loyalty ISAs for existing Society members.

ISA Application and ISA Transfer Authority forms can be downloaded at www.dudleybuildingsociety.co.uk/savings If you would like some more information on the above you can speak to one of our friendly Customer Service Advisers at Dudley Building Society on 01384 231414 or visit dudleybuildingsociety.co.uk

Boasting a coveted 4 star AA award, the hotel recently scored an impressive 77% following its most recent inspection and its restaurant has long held the accolade of a 2 Star AA Rosette rating - making it Wolverhampton’s premier hotel and a must-visit venue, whatever you’ve got planned. As Manager, Neil Wyatt explains: “We’re really proud to be the highest rated hotel in Wolverhampton and we’re currently striving towards earning AA Silver Star accreditation. We

work really hard to make sure that everyone’s visit is amazing, whether they’re staying with us on business, enjoying a biteto-eat in the restaurant or even holding their big day with us.” And, thanks to a £3.5million ongoing investment from the Bernard family – who bought the beautiful Grade 2 listed

hotel back in 2011 - every aspect of the business is being improved and updated: “We’re celebrating our seventh birthday this year, there has been considerable investment during this time, and non more so noticeable that the last three years which has seen the renovation and completion of the bedrooms, car park and public areas, with more investment planned for the future. We have also created beautiful outside spaces that are perfect for hosting outdoor wedding ceremonies and our themed events and barbeques.” Playing host to weddings, corporate events and private functions, The Mount offers so much more than just great accommodation. “Regardless of whether it’s a large or intimate celebration we offer couples a fantastic wedding experience.” The Wightwick Suite and The Drawing Room – which is also home to The Mount’s Two AA Rosette restaurant – and The Manders Suite are perfect for

hosting smaller parties, of around 90 guests, whereas the hotel’s most spectacular room, The Great Hall, accommodates up to 120 guests. “The Great Hall is utterly breathtaking and it offers an unbeatable setting for both the Civil Ceremony and Wedding Breakfast.” The hotel’s exceptional facilities, prime location and beautiful surroundings make it ideal for corporate events too: “Many businesses have held their events with us and have used the hotel’s 4 acres of land for team building exercises.” The Mount is located just 2 miles outside Wolverhampton, which makes it the perfect place to stay if you’re in the city to watch a Wolves match and the venue is also popular with visiting teams:

When it comes to food though, guests and locals are lucky enough to enjoy awardwinning cuisine in the hotel’s restaurant.

“Now that Wolves have been promoted to the Premier League, we’re looking forward to hosting plenty of visiting premiership teams.”

“Whether you are looking for a quick bite at the bar, a lovely afternoon tea in the lounge or a fantastic dinner in our restaurant you will not be left disappointed,” adds Neil. The Drawing Room is set on the edge of the Mount overlooking beautifully kept gardens and has been designed in a traditional yet contemporary style and serves the finest seasonal homemade food. And, if you’ve got a special occasion just around the corner then why not enjoy The Mount’s private dining experience? It’s sure to delight every one of your guests. In fact, every occasion is made extra-special at The Mount, so why don’t you plan a visit today and find out for yourself why the hotel – and restaurant - has achieved such high ratings?

Wedding of the Year sweet counter kept the children very busy for the duration of the speeches, which, in true romantic form, was followed by an onslaught of five best men recounting some of the more embarrassing moments of our groom. Sarah and Andy are both longstanding employees of Berriman Eaton Tettenhall Office where Andy has progressed from Lettings Manager to Associate Director and Sarah has dedicated many years as a sales negotiator.

If the Queen had seen the view from Abel’s Harp, Shropshire she may never have resided in Windsor! When Wolverhampton couple, Andy Roberts and Sarah Willis, booked their dream wedding for 19th May, the Royals, Harry and Meghan, had yet to announce their planned nuptials, which was to become the most publicised date of the year. Swapping St George’s Chapel and a carriage procession through the streets lined with thousands of well wishers, our couple chose this vintage-style venue near Minsterley, devoid of any

urbanisation where the Shropshire hills meet the Welsh mountains. There was however, an equally enthusiastic crowd that witnessed the hilltop, openair wedding ceremony in glorious sunshine where Sarah and Andy exchanged vows in front of 85 close friends and family followed by a short walk down to the rustic terrace for entertainment and a fine feast. A self-service

Sarah was attended by her daughter Storm, bridesmaids Katy and Jennie, flower girls Hatty, Macy, Olivia and Syriah with sons, page boys Lennie and Rufus. Best men were Andy’s

brother, Stu and childhood friends: Adam, Jay, Craig and Ben. And, the whole occasion was captured by beautiful photography courtesy of Apex Pro Media. More guests arrived throughout the afternoon and evening to celebrate into the early hours with more food and dancing under the stars. Sarah and Andy were particularly thrilled to see people who had come, not only from the far reaches of Wolverhampton, but also from as far away as Devon, Norway and Orlando! We wish them well for a long and happy future together.

Davenport House

Standing proudly amid acres of rolling parkland, Davenport House has been part of the Shropshire countryside for centuries. In more recent times, this country house in picturesque Worfield has been a romantic and elegant setting for weddings and the latest custodians, Elizabeth and Joseph, have made it their mission to take Davenport House to the next level. Dating back to 1726, this Georgian mansion was once the home of William Davenport and comes with a history of love. Following a forbidden romance, William married Jane Bromley and their grandson, Henry, commissioned Francis Smith to design Davenport House as we know it today. Full of traditional grandeur and character, this remarkable house has recently undergone an incredible transformation to make it one of the standout wedding venues in the area. Since taking charge of this stunning setting, Elizabeth and Joseph have worked tirelessly to renovate each aspect of Davenport House. The Great Hall, a spectacular setting for wedding ceremonies at the front of the house, features cool grey walls that highlight the house’s past while providing a contemporary

72

accompaniment to the impressive painting and intricate plasterwork. The Drawing Room has had its elegance fully restored, combining an authentic feel with exquisite views of the venue’s tranquil grounds and hidden garden. The old stables are just a few steps from the front door and now provide the perfect space to prepare before tying the knot. The cast iron hay racks remain, but sit alongside comfy sofas, a well-equipped kitchen, plenty of mirrors and everything that a couple could need in the build-up to their ceremony. The grounds also hold a handful of private and peaceful cottages that will offer guests a wonderful night’s stay after the celebrations have drawn to a close. A wander up the ornate staircase reveals a collection of beautifully furnished bedrooms, each with their own style and unique features. Huge beds, inviting sofas and chic décor make each one a joy to spend the night in. With views over the idyllic pond and secluded grounds, they sum up everything that makes Davenport House a truly special wedding venue. Sportsman’s lunch at

Wolverhampton RFC Wolverhampton Rugby Club held its 8th Annual Corporate Lunch on Friday 15th June 2018 with 650 guests attending the marquee event held on the main pitch in front of the clubhouse. The event is possibly the premier networking event in the Wolverhampton corporate calendar and this year a huge number of the small, medium and large businesses and companies in and around the area together with their guests contributed to the sell-out event. The club were again proud to welcome, as principal sponsors, Charter Savings Bank and Precise mortgages, Tile Choice, Thompson AVC and Dudley Motor Company. This year the proceedings were governed by the lively and ever funny John Bentley, ex England and Great Britain rugby league before switching codes to rugby union to represent England and the British and Irish lions on their famous 1997 tour to South Africa. On that Lions tour John met his now good friend and “Mr Lions” Sir Ian “Geech” McGeechan, the pair treated guests to an hilarious chat-show lookback at some of the best moments in British and Irish lions history including the less macho side of the infamous “99” event on the 1974 South Africa trip. David Trick the president of Bath Rugby and former England rugby Union player then regaled the crowd with some of the funnier but less known stories of bygone rugby days, when scrutiny and responsibility were a little more relaxed. Finally and a detour from rugby, ex-Wolves and England football legend Steve “Tank” Kindon took guests through overcoming a childhood speech impediment and the side of football we don’t get to hear about very often. Funds from the event will again go to the ongoing re-development of the clubhouse facilities as well as helping local charities. Tickets for next year’s event on 14th or 21st June will be available from September. Please contact Kevin Round on 07956 491980. 74

Horizons Restaurant at W o lv e r hamp t o n

Racecourse By Rob Taylor

It started, appropriately enough, with a race. The kind of which many of you are familiar with: a dash from one side of our city to the other, through heavy traffic. For me this came following the climax of Wolves FC’s final home match of the season. The match concluded at 4.45pm. I was convinced that I’d allowed plenty of time to get across the city to Horizons Restaurant at

76

Wolverhampton Racecourse in time for the first race at 5.25pm – after all, I live only three miles away. I may even be first past the post into the restaurant, or so I thought. But, no, my plans were upset by the post-match, cup-giving ceremony at Molineux, which caused the jubilant masses to flood the streets a lot later than is usual. Evidently it takes infinitely longer than you’d think to hand

over a trophy, applaud, and then wander the pitch for a bit. Oh well. So, some 25 minutes later than was my intention, my girlfriend Nicola and I roll up at our destination, road-weary and long overdue refreshment. Immediately we’re struck by the imposing complex, which stands replete with onsite accommodation (a Holiday Inn hotel), conference suites and much, much more. After making a swift entry through the turnstiles

wolverhampton west magazine

and a brief nose around the Parade Ring (during which I attempt to divine an answer to which horse will triumph in Race 2 using my Horse Whispering skills alone) we head up to Horizons Restaurant on the third floor. I can confidently say that you will not find a better spot anywhere in the country to watch the Sport of Kings. Set over three levels, the restaurant provides stupendous panoramic views for every guest. Not only are you guaranteed the best views in the house, you’re able to dine like a king too. I have driven past Wolverhampton Racecourse too many times to count and can remember thinking: I really must pop in. I’ve been to Monmore Green Stadium many times and have always been a fan of the races, yet for one reason or another I have never had the opportunity to venture inside Happily now this particular gap in my racing checklist has been ticked off – and in some style too. The whole front section of the restaurant is one huge expanse of glass and the tables nestle right up against it. There are TVs mounted on every table. We find ourselves to be guests with a front-row seat in the lower tier and with a top-notch menu in hand. So let’s get on with the action. It’s a warm, bright almost-summer’s evening so we start with drinks. Wine to be accurate. If only my pick for our first foray into having a flutter were as strong and fullbodied as the delightful rosé wine we’re now sipping, I wouldn’t be a fiver down already. But it’s all good

fun. Whether you’re first timers like us, or seasoned veterans who know a thing or two more than the Racing Post, you’re guaranteed a first-class experience here. Keen to sample the full threecourse experience that our £49.99 package affords (as well as a little bonus that I’ll come to later), we order. Service from staff is prompt and courteous; we never feel left wanting for anything throughout the entire evening. Nothing detracts from the on-track action and regular Tote betting at our table keeps our meal uninterrupted. We have four starters to pick from tonight, from an ever-evolving menu. I’m sure my ‘Goats cheese and roasted red pepper tart with watercress and red pepper coulis’ is the best choice and I’m not disappointed: it couldn’t be fresher or tastier. Of course Nicola protests that her ‘Cream of vegetable soup finished with chive crème fraiche’ is better. I am allowed to try a sip and, I have to admit, it’s pretty damn good. In fact, after she wins a tidy sum on the next race, I start to think that maybe I should follow her lead from now on. For the main course, I opt for ‘Baked fillet of sea bass with potato gnocchi, shaved parmesan, served in carbonara sauce’. Nicola requests the ‘Roast rack of pork, spring onion croquette, butternut squash puree, sugar snap peas, with Madeira jus’. Everything is superbly cooked, beautifully presented and served perfectly.

Special mention goes to the sea bass as I have this fairly regularly but will go on record to say that this is one of the best examples I’ve tried. My long-suffering girlfriend insists that I must make mention of the exquisitely succulent pork. So, there, I’ve mentioned it. Desserts are equally tasty and again presented with a real panache. Special standout here is my ‘Bitter chocolate fondant, with white chocolate sauce, served with vanilla ice cream’, because if it’s not executed correctly this dish can feel decidedly mediocre. Nicola goes for ‘Glazed lemon tart, fresh raspberries, crème Chantilly, served with raspberry coulis’ and, after the final race at 8.30pm, goes home with yet another race victory to add to her increasingly ample purse. But that’s not all… As part of the entertainment package we are very soon after treated to a little bit of glorious nostalgia from tribute band Re Take That, down in the Ringside Suite. Being taken back to our salad days in the 90s is a pleasing end to a spectacular evening at Wolverhampton Racecourse. The myriad on-site facilities, fantastic food and thrilling trackside action make it the venue of choice for a fantastic night out in Wolverhampton. I only wish I’d visited sooner – and… OK… maybe won a race or two, but then again, there’s always next time. I’ll definitely be coming back for good.

Cause for Celebration at

Halfpenny Green Wi n e E s t a t e

You’d be forgiven for thinking of France, Italy, Australia or California when talking about award-winning wines – but now you can add South Staffordshire to that list! Halfpenny Green Wine Estate, located just seven miles south of Wolverhampton, is a family run vineyard that has been producing English wines for over 30 years. Whilst awards have been plentiful over the years, the estate now holds over twenty awards for its current range of wines - all grown and produced on-site - won from regional, national, and even international competitions. This is all crowned by the recent renewal of their Visit England Quality Assured Visitor Attraction status for the site, which is awarded to attractions that pass rigorous guidelines and a mystery shopper style site visit. One of the best ways for guests to enjoy the Wine Estate, and get an insight into the exciting world of English wine, is with a Tour, Tasting & Two Course Meal package, available at just £24.95 78

per person. Available to book on selected dates throughout the summer months, guests will enjoy a guided tour of the vines and winery, a tutored tasting of a selection of the estate’s award-winning wines, and a set two course meal to end the afternoon or evening. Guests will then have the opportunity to visit the three story shop to browse the full wine selection, or, following a daytime tour, relax with a drink in the tea room or explore the on-site craft centre, which is home to over 15 individual businesses and a zoo! Upcoming tour dates available for booking include Thursday 13th September, Saturday 22nd September and Thursday 4th October, with a full list available on the website. If wine isn’t your thing, there’s still plenty on offer at Halfpenny Green.

If classic British spirits are more up your street, why not indulge in a Gin Tasting Experience, available in the shop’s serene Wine Loft. For just £25.00 per person, guests will enjoy a curated menu of four gin and tonics, carefully developed by the expert tasting staff and put together from the shop’s range of over 80 artisan British gins. The experiences are available to book year-round, and are the perfect accompaniment to a lovely summer afternoon in the British countryside. For the foodies, the Wine Estate’s recently extended restaurant should be the first port of call. Open for breakfast and lunch daily, the kitchen serves a range of meals and daily specials cooked fresh to order, prepared using locally sourced ingredients. The newly refurbished restaurant counter serves a range of hot and cold drinks including barista coffees, flavoured teas, soft drinks and thick shakes, plus a variety of cakes, cream cakes and desserts all made fresh by the baker. Tables are available to book by calling the restaurant, or guests are welcome to drop in to the conservatory tea room for a quick bite to eat. There’s plenty on offer at South Staffordshire’s own vineyard this summer, so if you haven’t yet had a taste of the complete English wine experience, make sure you put Halfpenny Green Wine Estate at the top of your ‘to-do’ list. Sports Bar and Grill at

Casino 36

The Big Attraction

By Rob Taylor With roulette tables, bigprize jackpot machines and so much more, Casino 36 offers thrill seekers a little bit of Vegas glitz and glamour, a lot closer to home. Since its launch in 2016, the £7.6 million casino has quickly established itself as a Mecca, not only for gamblers but for anyone looking for a fantastic night out in the city. Coincide your visit to Casino 36, which stands on the site of the former Rubicon Casino on Temple Street 84

in Wolverhampton, with a popular sporting event and you’ll find its standing room only inside the Sports Bar. Drop by on a busy Saturday night and you’ll see a gaming floor jam-packed with revellers looking to strike it lucky. Get it on a good night, when the place is positively jumping, and there’s nothing quite like it. However, I time my visit to line up with precisely neither. This is because my business is with one of the oft-overlooked aspects of Casino 36: food. All of us need it and most of us love it: so here’s an inside look at the newly launched Sports Bar and Grill menu. But first: they say that love comes in at the eye so it’d wolverhampton west magazine

be rude to overlook the sensory overload that awaits visitors inside Casino 36. Set across three floors, which comprise Champagne Lounge, Sports Bar and Grill and Gaming Floor, the casino takes entertainment to dizzying new heights. Loaded with flashing lights and whirring machines, the games floor is a welcoming place, chock full of all the latest technology to keep serious gamblers plugged in 24/7; a place where friendly managers and staff mix with eager punters, regularly showing newbies like me how to play. And the Champagne Lounge is where winners can toast their success. Yet unsurprisingly the Sports Bar and Grill is where my partner Nicola and I spent most of our evening. This floor brings new meaning to the phrase wall-to-wall action: here you have access to every major sports channel via around 13 HD TV screens, all running different channels concurrently. Through the same eyeballs I simultaneously watch Nadal despatch Del Potro in the quarterfinals at the French Open and see horse racing at Newmarket – entirely without sound. Only when England play Costa Rica at Elland Road in a pre-World Cup warm-up match does sound impose itself into the cosy atmosphere. The room has a very relaxed vibe; it’s informal yet professional, everything is new, slick and modern: the sofas are luxurious, the wall-mounted booths, intimate. It really is a fantastic place in which to watch sport, socialise and eat and drink. Ah, yes, the food… it’s so easy to get distracted with so much going on, but forget about it at your cost because after just one glance at the new menu we’re impressed. Unusual offerings rub shoulders with traditional fare. A quick chat with tonight’s chef Ed Kettle is proof positive that food here is taken extremely seriously. Everything is freshly prepared in-house in the open plan kitchen. He recommends the homemade ‘Casino 36 Nachos’ (£3.50) to start; we agree. He then challenges us to roll them up into a sharing platter which consists of our choice of four starters (£12.50); we once again follow our chef’s advice, going with nachos plus

‘Southern Fried Chicken Strips’, ‘Grilled Halloumi with Sweet Chilli Dipping Sauce’ and ‘Tomato, Mozzarella and Basil Quesadillas’. Promptly served by friendly waiting staff the platter exceeds our every expectation. Loaded with goodness and oozing flavour from every crunch and dip, this is a feast fit to appease even the most discerning diner. After years spent dining out in pubs and bars we’ve both grudgingly come to accept what such menu staples entail, namely uninspiring, warmed-up afterthoughts. But at Casino 36 the pre-meal snacks zing with a vibrancy that only freshly prepared food can pack. Every item is incredibly tasty and satisfying, but stand-out mention must go to the soon-to-be famous nachos: over-sized, zesty and packed full of flavour these tortillas set the tone for the rest of the evening. Given the portion size and quality of ingredients this food represents fantastic value for money – and is more than capable of bringing in diners based on its merits alone. Our main courses continue to show the quality of the kitchen at Casino 36. There’s a collective note of satisfaction from us both when our meals arrive. Mine is ‘Oriental Salmon Salad’ with soy and chilli dressing on the side (£10); Nicola’s is – and sure to be a popular favourite – the ‘Classic Dog’ (£6.50), a foot-long 100% pork sausage from a local butchers. Already it has me wondering if my vain attempt to be healthy has backfired. When she peels through the layers of caramelised onions and American

www.wolverhamptonwestmag.co.uk

mustard and dunks one of the accompanying thick-cut chips into homemade ‘slaw, I’m certain of it. So with this in mind it’s to my salad’s enormous credit that I soon forget the lust-object sitting across the other side of the table. It is fresh, succulent and character-filled, full of flavour and very well dressed. Dessert is next and again the compliments fly. The ‘Dessert Sharing Platter’ (£7) – this Tapas-style eating really suits the Sports Bar’s ambience – is well stocked with sweet treats: mini churros with salted caramel and chocolate sauces, cheesecakes, brownies and more. Every one of them is a one-bite delight. Everything at Casino 36 screams fun. So much jostles for your attention when you’re inside but, whatever you do, be sure to try the Sports Bar and Grill while you’re in there, I bet you won’t be disappointed. Ultimate guide to summer hair Summer is finally here and whether you’re set to jet off to the calming shores of the Italian Riviera, bask in glorious sunshine on a heaven-sent tropical island or maybe just stay at home and brave the unpredictable British weather, you’ll want your hair to look amazing. So, to provide you with all the advice you need to make every day a good hair day this season, we’ve teamed-up with Wolverhampton’s multi-award winning destination salon, Royston Blythe, to bring you the ultimate guide to summer hair. Fresh from celebrating their recent win at the L’Oreal Colour Trophy Awards for the third consecutive year, the team are ready and waiting to give you the low-down on this summer’s hottest looks:

A New Hue Pastel Metallic hues are a beautiful addition to this summer’s colour palette. You can opt for something subtle and add metallic balayage highlights to a conventional base shade or, you could incorporate them into an all-over metallic hair colour effect for a more adventurous look. For natural blondes and bleach blondes alike, icy-white is a statement look to consider: not only does it look gorgeous on 88

its own, but also with pastel undertones, like blues or lavenders. If you’re a brunette, summer is the time to incorporate sunkissed highlights that add interest to an all over colour. It is important to visit a skilled colourist so that they can guide you on the best tones to keep your complexion bright and glowing.

news for those whose long locks are suffering the consequences of excessive colouring and overuse of heated tools. In one salon visit you can opt for the chop and rid your hair of dry ends and completely revitalise your look. Midi length is oh-so-versatile, super-flattering, low maintenance and adapted to suit all face shapes - what’s not to love?

EYE TESTS DETEC T SIGNS OF SERIOUS HEALTH PROBLEMS In the last year nearly 75% of us admit to experiencing eye problems such as blurred vision or sore irritated eyes, with one in five saying that this restricts our daily lives and ability to enjoy everyday activities. Yet despite this, nearly 14 million people fail to have their eyes checked regularly.

• Give advice and answer your questions about your vision, eye health and new products or services that can help you. Also a range of underlying general health problems sometimes can be first detected during a comprehensive eye examination. • Diabetes - high blood glucose can damage small blood vessels and cause tiny haemorrhages on retina. • High blood pressure, often otherwise symptomless can show as abnormal retinal blood vessels.

As we get older, a regular comprehensive eye examination is very important, not only because it offers a health check for your eyes, but as a part of it your optometrist will do a number of checks including: • Detect signs of eye disease – this is usually easier to deal with if detected early - our 3D OCT scans are an invaluable tool especially if you have family history of glaucoma, macular degeneration or diabetes • Check your vision and make it as clear and comfortable as possible.

used to enhance images and previous scans compared to ease detection of eye cancer such as malignant melanoma.

• High cholesterol can cause blood vessel blockages in the back of the eye.

• Tumours around the eye and lids which can appear as normal lumps and bumps.

• Brain tumour – thankfully rare but due to raised intracranial pressure can cause swelling of the optic nerve which can sometimes be spotted before any symptoms such as headaches and nausea begin.

More than two million people in the UK have impaired sight and that number is set to double by 2050. It is thought that 50% of sight loss could have been avoided with the right treatment at the right time which is why it is most important to have regular eye exams.

• Eye tumours-can be detected by looking inside the eye and more effectively with advanced OCT technology - filters can be

SCHOOL X-RAY VISIT Students from The Royal School, Wolverhampton had an educational visit to the Imaging department at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital recently.

This was to support the Medical Imaging section of their curriculum and is just one of the ways that the private hospital in Tetttenhall gets involved with the local community. During their three hour visit at the end of April, the group of 11 A level physics pupils had presentations, quizzes and got hands on with the equipment. The event was sponsored by Philips, who provided goody bags for everyone and brought in the latest technology US scanners and created a number of practical demonstrations in which the students could get involved, including ultra-sounding each other’s upper limbs. Imaging Manager, Lucy Willcox says, “The students had a go at manoeuvring a digital x-ray system and an Image Intensifier, which is used to produce live images in theatre. Whilst the MRI scanner was not in use, they had the opportunity to lie on the scanner bed and experience what it’s like to move into the scanner and we created a demonstration

MRI scanner

model so that they could safely experience the magnetic pull and torque of the scanner.” One of the foundations of Nuffield Health’s values and beliefs is to deliver significant and increasing public benefit. Lucy says “This was a great opportunity for us to demonstrate our values and contribute to students in our local community. Our radiographers Sue Roberts and Rebecca Kettleborough found it rewarding to share information that they are so passionate about and the students enjoyed being able to ask the experts. It was great for them to be able to see these pieces of equipment in clinical settings rather than just see pictures in a text-book or online.” The students learned that neither ultrasound nor MRI uses ionising

radiation to produce images. Each modality has its benefits and the type of scan your doctor requests will be chosen depending on what they are looking for. The potential benefit of the clinical findings of the scan will always outweigh the potential risk of the dose of radiation you receive. Lucy Willcox explains, “We like to use the analogy that a chest x-ray gives you the same dose of radiation as you’d receive in “background radiation” on a return flight from the UK to USA.” Physics teacher Michelle Clayton, from The Royal School wrote to the hospital to thank them for hosting the educational visit, saying, “Thank you so much for the visit and the time given for us to learn more about imaging. We really appreciate it. We were all amazed by the speed at which projectiles can be pulled into the MRI scanner, with something as small as a paperclip being able to fly into the scanner at over 30mph. “

WLTSC Community Ethos

The summer tennis season is in full swing at Wolverhampton Lawn Tennis and Squash Club, but the opportunity to play sport and get healthy is not the only feature of the popular Newbridge-based venue.

There is a strong camaraderie and community spirit amongst members, which also manifests itself in a thriving social programme and many different initiatives for charity. WLTSC recently fielded the largest team in the annual Aberdovey Bike Ride, raising funds for the Critical Care Unit and the Giles Trust at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital in memory of former member Robert Marshall, and in thanks for the care received by 19-year-old Ryan Hughes. Ryan, nephew of Operations Manager Marc Hughes, has undergone treatment for a brain tumour but is now recovering and was delighted to join the WLTSC team for this year’s event. With Aberdovey done and dusted, attentions quickly turned to the third Lord Bilston Big Challenge, orchestrated by Personal Trainer Brendon Turner, in memory of his late father Dennis, former MP, Leader of Wolverhampton Council and member of the House of Lords.

Medispa at Heaven – look and feel amazing The skincare industry is filled with empty promises, disappointments and products that just don’t live up to their claims. But, amongst the almost endless list of ‘miracle’ ranges out there there’s one brand that you know that you can trust: Heaven by Deborah Mitchell. Globally renowned, a favourite with celebrities and a must for anyone concerned about their skin, Heaven’s range of outstanding skincare products provide real results that have transformed the way women – and men – feel about their appearance worldwide. So, it’s no surprise that Deborah Mitchell’s award-winning patented range of ABEETOXIN products have been flying off the shelves ever since the brand was launched back in 1995. Since then, Deborah has worked tirelessly to extend both Heaven’s skincare range and salon services and has excitingly just launched a new range of Medispa treatments to complement her already established skincare menu at her Shifnal-based salon. As Deborah explains: “Heaven5 is an amazing laser and IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatment that takes care of a multitude of skin issues and it’s brand new at the salon.”

results they had hoped for, so they asked me if I could offer something that would accompany treatments like our signature Bee Sting Facial.” And, Heaven5 provided the perfect solution. “Salons that offer laser and IPL treatments often fail to replace the heads of their machines and so clients don’t see the results they want, that’s why you should always ask how many shots the

laser has had before you invest your money in the treatment.” At Heaven though, you can rest assured that you’ll get the result you want because the salon’s machines offer the intensity required to make a real difference and utilise the latest cutting-edge technology. “Oxy Hydra 8 is another of our Medispa treatments and it’s an amazing vitamin hydration treatment that deeply exfoliates the skin’s tissues, removing debris and

Working to reduce redness on the skin, take away pigmentation, tackle lines and wrinkles and reduce scarring, Heaven5 also offers permanent pain-free hair removal for the entire body. The unique piece of equipment was designed by Deborah to work alongside Heaven’s other treatments: “So many of my clients would tell me how disappointed they had been when they’d gone for treatments elsewhere and had not got the 106

his face. After just one treatment with Heaven5 there was a 70% reduction of redness straight away, he was delighted.” And, he’s just one of the many customers at Heaven who have seen instant results. “A lady wanted hair on her back removing and she expected that she’d need a course of treatment, however after just one IPL session the hair had been permanently removed.” When it comes to weight loss though, one of Deborah’s clients believes that the treatment enabled her to lose 3 and a half stones: a remarkable success. In fact, Deborah is a fan of her treatments too:

effectively jet washing the skin’s surface using organic liquids. It also eliminates fine lines and leaves skin looking brand new afterwards.” The aim at the salon is to make clients feel good both inside and out, and to offer a real solution to those issues that can have a really negative effect on self-confidence. And, there’s another amazing machine at the salon that’ll get to work on lines and deep wrinkles, improve firmness and even help to get your body looking beach-ready. “The Lipolis7 allows women to get the face and body they want without having to opt for invasive surgeries or botox. Its unique system collapses fat cells, stimulates the lymphatic system, speeds up your metabolism and melts fat away – resulting in inches of weight loss after only a couple of sessions.”

The salon can even help you to get a perfect posterior too: “Our Brazilian bum lift will make you look amazing after just one treatment,” adds Deborah. Despite Deborah’s loyal celebrity clientele – who often make the journey to Shifnal to visit the salon – her treatments are actually extremely affordable, meaning that there’s nothing to stop you getting the look you want today. And, there have been plenty of clients at Heaven who have been absolutely delighted with their results. “It’s amazing how much of a difference our treatments have made to our clients by tackling issues that they’ve been really concerned about for a long time.” “One gentleman came to see us to ask if there was anything we could do to tackle redness on

“I used three zaps of the laser on my frown line and saw a massive improvement; a customer would have paid just £30 for that treatment. My daughter had an IPL treatment for hair removal and she couldn’t believe just how fast, easy – and pain free – the laser was.” A quick zap of the laser is enough to take care of lines around the eyes too, which has been a popular treatment choice for men at Heaven. Of course, there are all of the other beauty services you’d expect to find at a luxury salon too: “We’re a one stop shop for beauty, alongside our specialist treatments; you can also have your nails done or book in for a massage.” Whatever service you opt for though, there’s no doubt that you’ll enjoy your time at the salon. “We’ve created a really gorgeous environment at the salon, it’s luxurious and relaxing,” adds Deborah. Living up to its name, the salon really does provide clients with a little bit of Heaven, so why not treat yourself to some TLC? Book in today. Heaven Salon, 13A Market Place, Shifnal TF11 9AU. The Benefits

of Physical Activity Regular physical activity is essential if we want to live a healthy and fulfilling life.

Engaging in regular physical activity has been shown to reduce the risk of diseases such as coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes and lowers the risk of depression and dementia. Adults should try to be physically active daily and engage in at least 150 minutes of physical activity over a week. This includes activities such as jogging, cycling, yoga, swimming or sports. Brisk walking is also classed a physical activity and is something that can easily fit into your daily routine. Physical activity is defined as moving quick enough to raise your heart rate, breathing faster and feeling warmer – this can lead to the benefits below.

Maintains healthy weight Physical activity increases the number of calories the body consumes for energy. Burning calories through physical activity combined with a healthy diet will help maintain a healthy weight.

Improves concentration and learning Exercise improves concentration and learning by releasing chemicals in the brain which are vital for your memory. Lower impact exercise such as brisk walking and yoga improve concentration and relieve stress.

Builds confidence and social skills By taking part in physical activity, children are more likely to develop skills in leadership, teambuilding and understanding. Team sports

are excellent ways to teach children about communication and bring out their confidence.

Manages stress Physical activity not only offers physical benefits but mental benefits too. Exercise produces chemicals in the brain which act as natural painkillers. These chemicals improve the ability to sleep and reduce stress.

Makes you feel good When exercising a chemical called dopamine is released. When this happens during exercise, it can make you feel happy and more relaxed.

Improves Sleep Staying active has been shown to improve sleep. Not only can regular exercise significantly improve your sleep quality, it can also give you energy that makes you want to get out of bed in the morning and start your day. Families in Wolverhampton can stay active this summer by getting involved with WV Active’s free Summer of Sport programme. They watched 18 teams do battle for the winner’s trophy, medals and shield and basked in the sunshine at the same time.

Holiday looks you’ll love

There’s nothing better to get you in the holiday mood than a day spent shopping for summery styles that’ll look amazing on the beach. Although it’s tempting to splash-out on a whole new holiday wardrobe, you only actually need a small selection of carefully chosen styles to create a really versatile vacation look. Which is good news if you want to save some extra spending money and keep to only one suitcase.

Could rising house prices see you

paying more tax?

The current standard inheritance tax allowance, or nil rate band, is £325,000 per person – the current average price for a detached home in the West Midlands is £348,500. If a single person dies, their estate will only start to pay inheritance tax if it is valued over that standard allowance.

House price growth in the West Midlands is expected to surpass all but one UK region over the next five years. And the soaring house prices could mean that thousands of families are hit with an unexpected bill for inheritance tax. Will Jones, a solicitor with the Wills, Probate and Lifetime Planning team at FBC Manby Bowdler, explains why the hikes in home prices could see more people paying inheritance tax (IHT): IHT is a tax on the estate, including property, possessions and any money, of someone who has died. There is a standard IHT allowance over which an estate is subject to IHT. 114

But married couples and those in a civil partnership can leave their beneficiaries up to £650,000 tax free. Where the first to die leaves their entire estate to their spouse or civil partner, no tax is due. When the second person dies, they can transfer 100 per cent of the ‘unused’ allowance to their estate, but this will not apply to unmarried couples or those not in civil partnerships.

into the bracket for paying inheritance tax, they will only pay tax on the amount above the allowance, not the whole sum. The amount of inheritance tax your beneficiaries pay can be reduced to 36 per cent on some assets if you bequeath at least 10 per cent of the net value of your estate to charity. Our advice would be to get expert help if you’re worried about your estate being affected by IHT, there are a number of ways we can support families in structuring their estate planning to protect assets for their chosen beneficiaries.

For more information on inheritance tax contact Will Jones on 01902 392 404 or email w.jones@fbcmb.co.uk

IHT is currently charged at 40 per cent of the value of the estate over the IHT allowance, but a new residence nil rate band was introduced last year, which can be claimed in specific circumstances. There are a number of qualifying factors to claim the residence nil rate band, and we’d recommend that people review their wills in the light of the changes. But people shouldn’t worry too much if they just tip over

Proud to be Award Winning Community

Champions!

Photo courtesy of Express & Star

Paycare is celebrating after being recognised as Community Champions at this year’s Express & Star Business Awards, one of the biggest events in the Midlands’ business diary. The event took place on Thursday 7th June at the Wolverhampton Racecourse, and was compered by the ‘Voice of the Balls’, Alan Dedicoat. Sponsored this year by Jaguar Land Rover, the Community Champion category saw extremely tough competition with fellow shortlisted firms also showcasing their fantastic work, but Paycare was truly triumphant on the night, praised by the judges for its work in supporting a vast range of activities and charities across its local, and wider, communities. 116

As part of the shortlist process, Paycare was also joined by representatives from The Lighthouse, The Haven, Wolves Community Trust and The Way who shared stories about the very real difference that Paycare’s donations have made, and continue to make, to the people that they serve. Kevin Rogers, CEO of Paycare, said: “As a not-for-profit organisation which has people at our very heart, we’re naturally committed to giving back and donating every spare penny not spent on enhancing our services. We’re very fortunate to be able to make such a positive difference within our communities and are very proud to have shared over £2.2million to date. The biggest of thanks must of course go to our Policyholders for their continued support of Paycare, and of our

mission to continue helping amazing charities, causes and initiatives. “We’re so humbled to have been recognised in this way, and while it’s not the reason that we do what we do, it’s very much in recognition to the fantastic support that we continue to receive from our Policyholders, as well as of the hard work of the entire Paycare team. With a ‘giving back’ ethos the lifeblood of our organisation, we’re very much looking forward to continuing to grow over the months and years ahead so that we can help even more special causes across the Black Country and beyond.” For more information, please visit www.paycare.org

Give your child the best start at

Berrington Lodge Nursery

If you’re looking to find a nursery that can provide your child with an inclusive, safe and supportive environment, then look no further than Berrington Lodge Nursery. Set within a beautiful and substantial Victorian villa – that was designed by prominent local architect George Bidlake - the Tettenhall Road-based nursery not only boasts fabulous surroundings but a commitment to offering the very best in personalised care and learning.

Promoting children’s curiosity and imagination is incredibly important at Berrington Lodge and children are helped to take responsibility for their learning in a nurturing environment where children are listen to, cared for and valued.

As Nicki Harris, Co-owner and Director explains: “At Berrington Lodge Nursery, we constantly strive to be the very best we can be. Myself and Co-owner and Director Robert Llewellyn have over 20 years’ experience in education and our mission is to provide every child with the best possible start; helping them to become curious, interested and successful learners.”

Indeed, there is a very special atmosphere at Berrington Lodge Nursery and you will always receive a very warm welcome whenever you visit.

With a curriculum that’s influenced by the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education, children at the nursery are encouraged to become strong capable agents of their own learning.

Outdoor play is highly valued and prioritised as an integral part of the exciting educational programme at Berrington. During outdoor play, practitioners encourage and support children’s problem-solving skills and nurture their creativity, as well as providing rich opportunities for their developing imagination, inventiveness and resourcefulness.

“We have established a culture that empowers our childcare practitioners so that they can provide exceptional support to children and their families. We believe all children have unlimited learning potential and are eager 118

to interact with and contribute to the world around them.”

“Diversity is valued and everyone is treated with respect, fairness and dignity. We foster a strong sense of community in which there is care and respect amongst children, parents, and staff.”

“We believe that there is no such thing as bad weather – only

inappropriate clothing. Learning that flows seamlessly between indoors and outdoors makes the most efficient use of resources and builds on children’s interests, enthusiasm and exploration.” Children will regularly spend time with older people at the neighbouring residential home as studies show that having young children interacting with older people makes everyone feel a little happier; and the children understand the importance of developing healthy and trusting friendships with people different to themselves. “We ensure the safety and security of children at all times with opportunities for children to talk, seek help, and be supported whenever necessary,” adds Nicki. Children at Berrington Lodge Nursery are encouraged to speak out and stay safe as they develop strong emotional bonds with expert staff who consistently implement detailed and considered safeguarding policies and procedures. From Success to Success

This year the Newbridge achievements have been outstanding. Not only have we been ranked 14th in the country by the Sunday Times Independent Prep Schools league tables but we have seen unprecedented success in senior school entrances and performing arts.

Eleven at Eleven Plus We are pleased to share Newbridge Preparatory School’s successful year at Eleven Plus. Eleven girls have been offered places by the Wrekin and Wolverhampton Consortium; securing places at Wolverhampton Girls’ High School and Newport Girls’ High School for September 2018. The girls scored very highly, one girl scoring 397 and the average score of the eleven girls was 350; statistically much higher than the lowest entry score. Over the past three years our success rate of places offered in the year has averaged around 50%. However, this year our success rate on maintained Grammar School and High School

offers is, an unprecedented, 85%. This is astounding given that, statistically based on the number of girls who apply from Newbridge and the number of places on offer, we should achieve less than one place. Congratulations to you all!

Senior Independent School Offers and Scholarships Nine of the thirteen girls also applied for independent school places with 100% success rate. The nine girls have been offered 18 places at a variety of local independent schools including Wolverhampton Grammar School (7 places), St. Dominic’s Grammar School (5 places), King Edward VI High School for Girls, Edgbaston (3 places), Shrewsbury High School (1 place), Tettenhall College (1 place) and Wrekin College (1 place). Collectively, the girls have secured six scholarships: • King Edward VI High School for Girls, Edgbaston - Two Academic Scholarships • St Dominic’s Grammar School Two Performing Arts Scholarship • Shrewsbury High School - Music and Academic Scholarship

www.wolverhamptonwestmag.co.uk

Choices All that remains now is for the girls and their parents to make their choices from the options they have created. We are so very proud of each and every one of our thirteen Year Six girls. I know we will find the right school for each of you as individuals.

Dudley Festival of Dance, Drama and Music All of the girls in Upper School have the opportunity to perform at the Dudley Festival of Dance, Drama and Music. This year they achieved ten firsts, ten seconds and four third places in drama. There were additional firsts in music classes for senior strings, piano and voice. The School Senior Recorder Group also achieved a first place in Recorder Consort Class securing Newbridge 15 first places in the festival. To read more about the school please visit the school website (www.newbridgeprepschool. org.uk) and take the opportunity to read our ‘Excellent’ (Ofsted equivalent – Outstanding) ISI Inspection report at www. isi.net/school/newbridgepreparatory-school-6725 . 123

Porsche Centre Wolver hampton

Customer Golf Day

Porsche Centre Wolverhampton teed off on the first leg of the Porsche Golf Cup GB tournament last month at South Staffordshire Golf Club. The annual customer golf day welcomed over 40 guests – made up of both prospective and existing customers – to one of the oldest Clubs in the Midlands, located on Danescourt Road, Tettenhall. Dealer Principal Simon Priest takes up the story: “Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their time out on the course. The rolling 6512yard Par 71 course at South Staffs was a delight to play. Porsche Wolverhampton, Dealer Principal Simon Priest with Peter Baker, Head Professional of South Staffs golf club

“The competition was based on Stableford, which made everything very close.”

Stableford is a popular scoring system in golf that awards points based upon the score at each hole after adjusting for the player’s handicap – a perfect companion for large social golfing events. “We had two winners on the day who now go through to the national final in September.” The competition winners will go on to represent Porsche Wolverhampton at the UK final at The Belfry Golf Club, near Sutton Coldfield. On display throughout the event was a selection of Porsche Centre Wolverhampton’s latest models including the new Porsche Cayenne, as well as a Boxster GTS and Panamera Sport Turismo. Established in 2016, Porsche Centre Wolverhampton is already flush with success in what is the brand’s 70th anniversary year after picking up the prestigious ‘New Retailer of the Year’ award at the Automotive Management Awards earlier this year. Recognising best practice across the automotive industry, the awards attract a high calibre of entrants. It’s unsurprising that only the very best will do at Porsche Wolverhampton. We wish both them and the competition winners the very best of luck.

Sportscar Together Day On Saturday, June 9th, hundreds of Porsche sports cars and thousands of car enthusiasts celebrated 70 years of Porsche in magnificent style, on what was named Sportscar Together Day.

Cholmondeley Castle, a former venue of both Carfest and Pageant of Power, provided a stunning backdrop for the event. Situated in beautiful Cheshire, the castle gardens were the perfect place to display over 300 parade Porsche sportscars as well as 200 more in the Porsche-only car park. Early Arrivals The first guests to arrive were proudly stood beside two extremely rare vintage Porsche models, but not the ones you might expect. Even hardened Porsche enthusiasts would 136

be excused for being unaware that between 1952 and 1963, Porsche manufactured agricultural vehicles. The steady trickle of arrivals after 10am soon turned into a flood. From 11am, the Porsche Centre parades started to arrive, taking their positions in front of the glistening lake, next to the giant lettering that spelled out P-O-R-S-C-H-E-7-0. First to arrive was Porsche Centre Wolverhampton, who had classics such as a 928 S4, a Targa Supersport and a 964 Carrera 4, as well as the Ghost Outlaw Car, a 911 Carrera Cab. More modern metal included the very latest Panamera and 911 Carrera T, as well as a Boxster S 550 Spyder Anniversary.

Sportscar Together Day was about celebrating the passion people have for Porsche cars, as well as bringing together enthusiasts from around the country to enjoy the spectacle of so many iconic sports cars at a picturesque location. Event organiser/participant Stratstone would like to thank everyone who attended on the day, and for the hundreds of Porsche owners who made the effort to drive up to Cholmondeley and make the day so special for everyone.

As well as the above, there was a fantastic mix of 911, Boxster and Cayman models in a variety of eye-catching colours. wolverhampton west magazine

G o l f A G ame for All By Mark Shervill

Over the last 20 years I have been very fortunate, because I’ve been able to make my passion for golf my job.

little granddaughter, who has been part of our junior coaching sessions every Saturday since last autumn. Seeing this gives me such a buzz.

By dedicating my professional life to coaching others, I have helped thousands of people to enjoy golf as much as I do – people of all ages, from pro to novice, have taken tuition from me.

I’m reminded of my times out on the course with my Dad. I’m lucky to be able to play golf with my children, Jacob and Lilly, and my wife, Lisa (who is also a professional and part of our coaching team). To get your family involved, look out during the coming summer holidays for our family Golfing Fun Day.

But my greatest achievement has to be when I see families, who have been introduced to the game through one of our coaching programs, out playing the course together: I saw this just the other day as last year’s captain of the club here at South Staffs was joined by his son, who has just started his golf journey this winter, and his

I like the vast differences in age between the people I coach. One of my pupils is Ted Dexter, the former England cricket captain, who still has an infectious appetite for being at his very best despite being in his 80s. And I have plenty of little stars in the making enrolled in our ‘mini masters’ class, many from only 5 years old.

As you’d expect this summer there’s lots going on for the whole family at South Staffordshire Golf Club – whether you’ve played before or not. Junior coaching team meet every Saturday between 12 and 4pm. Lisa’s ladies’ class is every other Tuesday morning from 10:30pm to 11:30pm. My coaching class for anyone over 50 who is either already playing or looking to start from 11am every Monday. And the Learn Together family coaching night is the first Wednesday of the month commencing from Wednesday 4th July 2018 from 6:30pm to 7:30pm. For more details contact the golf club on 01902751065.

Leaf

By Rob Taylor

Let’s be honest, if you had to compile a list of the most exciting and memorable car names from history the Nissan Leaf wouldn’t be on it. Arresting examples like Cobra, Mustang and Stingray live long in memory, effortlessly conjuring up super-cool images of sexy metal. Even when you move away from sports cars, towards more runof-the-mill everyday boxes, you can do better. However, none of this really matters once you pass a certain point in your life: a time when necessity creeps in and you realise what really matters. First and foremost and for all of us I’m sure, this has to do with our ability to sustain life. For too long motorists have viewed the cost of motoring as being limited to the price they pay at the pumps, but there’s a greater cost looming. So, as responsible citizens of Mother Earth,

• Paint Protection Film • Detailing • Alloy Wheel Refurbishment & Colour Change • Vehicle Tinting • Bespoke Design • Vehicle Wrapping & Livery • Brake Calliper Colour Change Enquiries: 01902 428272/504442 Email: info@select1automotive.co.uk Unit 25 The Hollies Ind. shouldn’t we, when technology makes itself ready and affordable, mitigate our carbon footprint a little? Let’s not kid ourselves: it’s not the principle that stops most of the 30-odd million motorists in this country from buying an electric vehicle, it’s the prohibitive cost and realities of day-to-day EV usability. Once Science cracks this they’ll be Leaves everywhere. So I’m happy to report that in the new Nissan Leaf much improvement has been made, to the point where EV ownership will soon be really tempting. Obviously the Leaf is 100% electric and produces zero emissions. Nissan is a pioneer in the EV world and in the Leaf can boast the world’s best-selling, mass-market electric vehicle. The Mark 1 Leaf was a best seller too, taking home a 50 per cent EV market share. OK, so the whole sector was just 13,500 vehicles last year – out of 2.5 million new cars sold – but kudos all the same. Entry-grade Visia models are available from just £21,990 (including a £4,500 Government grant) and then options rise to almost £28,000 (including grant) for range-topping Tekna versions, like the one here. Based on official stats, the Leaf will give you 168 miles on the combined cycle or up to 258 miles in city conditions, on a single charge. From what I experienced, I have no reason to doubt that. Unsurprisingly, the Leaf is quiet, smooth and has a comfortable suspension set-up. More surprisingly, it’s not slow: 0 to 60 mph in 7.9 seconds. In terms of practicality the Leaf is just as good as everything else comparable: most versions get decent spec, including climate control and heated steering wheel and seats. It looks good too: the old one certainly didn’t. Take your friends out in it and you can discuss the clever “e-pedal”. Press the button and your normal accelerator becomes part brake pedal so, to slow down to a stop, you need only lift off the throttle and the car will decelerate firmly. This saves on conventional braking and is good for range. Charging time from low to 80 per cent is around 40 to 60 minutes (if you can find a quick-charging station), while it’s around 7.5 hours from low to 100 per cent with a typical 7Kw domestic box. In reality you really do need a box at home. Drive this car and know you’re getting cuttingedge engineering while doing your bit to keep the planet alive. And I can guarantee, from time to time, you’ll catch a smug smile playing across your lips when you are out in it – a smile that is infinitely more satisfying than the badge buzz I mentioned earlier. But nonetheless, for anyone who is interested: apparently “Leaf” stands for Leading Environmentally Friendly Affordable Family Car. wolverhampton west magazine

Why service your air-con? An air-con service is not included in your car’s regular service schedule.

However, most manufacturers recommend that you have your aircon system serviced and pollen filter replaced every two years. There are four very good reasons for this: 1. New air-con gas contains 98% fewer pollutants - Until recently air-con systems used a refrigeration gas known as R134a. This has now been replaced with a new gas, R1234YF, which is equally effective but much cleaner and far better for the environment.

3. The system needs to be used regularly to run effectively - If your air-con system isn’t used regularly the seals will dry out. In an air-con service the system is drained to remove any oil, gas and moisture. It is then recharged with new gas and oil to ensure optimum performance.

2. The average air-con system loses 10% of its gas per annum - Over time refrigerant gas leaks out of the air-con system. If the level of gas gets too low, the system will not function.

4. Bacteria builds up in the air vents and pollen filter - Our service includes an antibacterial clean which removes nasty odours and germs so that all you get when you turn on your air-con is fresh air. For more information or to book an air-con service and regas, please contact Simon, Mac or Hayley at HiQ Wolverhampton on 01902 420234.
