Dental Tourism Dental tourism is starting to become more popular. I understand it, get a holiday to Thailand, Turkey or Budapest and have a brilliant white smile at the end of it. It can be a very attractive proposition. And don’t worry this isn’t one of those articles that I put out to convince people it’s a bad thing.

We have seen some clients who have had some fantastic work done abroad; unfortunately we’ve also seen the flip side with dental work that has not gone so great. Really, the point of this article was to to say we’re here to help.

Received wisdom suggests that a spring editor’s letter should be full of references to frolicking bunnies, new-born-at-Easter chicks and lots of talk about the clocks going forward, as well as the thinly-veiled threat of a bit of proper sunshine. Don’t worry, we will get to that, but first, bear with me.

Let’s first put the grim stuff well and truly behind us.

More received wisdom for you: you should feed a cold and starve a fever, but it’ll take a lot more than that to defeat the Coronavirus. Although it’s worth keeping in mind that boring, old, regular influenza kills masses more worldwide each year and there’s barely a word of coverage about that in the media. So, I’d sleep easy.

OK, next on my to-do list is Brexit. It’s officially over and done with: finally. Yes, on January 31st our nation let out a collective sigh of relief. Some of us partied, even. Plastic Union Jack flag sales reached World Cuplevels. Now comes the long road ahead: Prime Minister Boris Johnson warns us that there may be “bumps in the road”. There certainly will. There will certainly be a surplus of pro-active - if empty - buzzwords and phrases knocking around in the year to come as well: “unleash the full potential of the UK” is my favourite so far.

And now to Mother Nature, who has unleashed upon us Storm Ciara, quickly followed by Storm Dennis, since I last wrote. Hitting huge swathes of the UK, felling trees and submerging villages, this terrible twosome still has some parts of the country underwater, with others resembling a quagmire. This is another warning from history that our flood defences are woefully inadequate.

If that’s enough of a recap for you, it’s time to point us towards the light of the coming season, to look forward to all that my favourite time of the year has to offer. There’s bags of stuff inside to tempt you out of hibernation and into better weather but if you’re still shy, start off inside in your home - with a good old-fashioned spring clean. WORLD RENOWNED CARTOON ARTIST WAS BLACK COUNTRY’S BEST KEPT SECRET New book looks at the life of Charlie ‘Chas’ Grigg, cartoon illustrator behind Korky the Cat and Desperate Dan. If you grew up in the 50’s or 60’s, then chances are that receiving your favourite comic was a weekly highlight.

The Dandy, Beano and The Topper ranked amongst the most popular and were all produced by publishing house, DC Thomson. It may come as a surprise to know that one of Thomson’s premier artists lived and worked quietly in Langley, throughout his prolific career.

Acknowledged by comic book aficionados as one of the greatest comic artists the UK has produced, a new book celebrating the life and work of Charlie Grigg has been published by Dr Brian Dakin and the Grigg family.

Charlie Grigg, known to his friends as Chas, was the cartoon artist who drew legends such as Korky the Cat, Desperate Dan, Splodge, Foxy, Willy Nilly and The Red Wrecker amongst many others.

Born and bred in the Black Country, Charlie’s flair for drawing became apparent at an early age and his passion for art stayed with him as he grew and left school to work in engineering. The book charts how he was encouraged by his wife Marge, to take the leap into full-time cartoon artistry at the age of 34. He continued to draw for DC Thomson for over 20 years, producing many of The Dandy’s summer and Christmas annual covers. It is estimated that in his lifetime, he produced over 10,000 illustrations and 1000 covers for

The Dandy alone. When he retired in 1983, he turned his hand to illustrating some of the famous ‘saucy seaside’ postcards found in souvenir shops up and down the British coastline.

Produced by publishing company Bamforth, many a seaside holiday wouldn’t be complete without sending one of these iconic cards home and they are now collector’s items.

In 2013, Charlie passed away at the age of 97. In his final years, he unfortunately suffered with dementia and although he may have struggled to recognise friends and family, he could still reproduce his famous illustrations perfectly.

His work has inspired local poets, song writers and artists and a retrospective of his work was held at Wednesbury Museum & Art Gallery. A Blue Plaque now adorns the school he attended as an infant in Rood End. A quiet and modest man, his family know that he would be a little shy but very proud that his work is finally receiving the recognition it deserves.

facIng tax Increases

I have a great number of clients who have, over the years, purchased property to let and to maximise returns through gearing taken a buy to let mortgage.

This was a great way to hold a property portfolio as all mortgage interest payments were tax deductible.

However, in 2016, we saw the implementation of some new tax rules that meant over the next four years, the amount of mortgage interest which could be offset from rental profit reduces.

In this current tax year (2019/2020), landlords can offset 25 per cent of their mortgage interest from their rental profit.

From April 2020, this reduces to zero.

There is a tax credit relief available based on basic rate tax however landlords will have to pay income tax on all of the rental income 14

they receive meaning that many of them will pay more tax.

payments and still yield a generous profit to the landlord.

This new tax rule is going to change the landscape of the buy-to-let market.

A private landlord would typically complete a tax return each year and on it they would detail the income from their property portfolio and then detail all of their expenditures such as management fees and repairs, along with other expenses including the mortgage interest.

How it normally works For example, let’s say a landlord has five properties in their buy-to-let portfolio.

The properties are worth about £700,000 in total however there are 5 lots of £100,000 interest-only mortgages, a total of £500,000.

Let’s say the interest rate on each buy-to-let mortgage is 3%.

The total interest-only mortgage payments each month would be £1,249 or £14,988 each year.

Let’s say the income received on each property is £600 each month - in total this is £3,000 each month or £36,000 each year.

Clearly we can see that despite the large amount of mortgage debt and mortgage payments that need to be paid, the rental income will fund these mortgage

Income tax on the rental income profit is then charged at the normal rate of income tax.

But as you can guess, from April 2020, many private landlords with buy-to-let mortgages will simply pay more income tax on their rental income.

With this same example, let’s say the interest charged on those buyto-let properties goes up to 6%. (I would imagine most people reading this would have experienced paying something close to that rate at some point in the past).

In my example scenario, the mortgage interest payments would increase to £2,501 each month or £30,012 each year. wolverhampton west magazine

This scenario looks a lot less attractive for a landlord.

If they cannot offset interest-only mortgage payments from their rental income profit, this will result in significantly lower returns and then they will inevitably have to consider alternative options.

How will landlords adapt?

Let’s say a landlord runs their property business through a company rather than as a private venture; would these new tax changes I mentioned above apply? The answer is no.

On the flip side companies do not have a capital gains tax (CGT) allowance so, when the property is eventually sold, corporation tax is paid on all the gain whereas individuals have an annual allowance this year of £12,000 so a couple owning a property jointly can make a gain of £24,000 with zero tax liability.

My opinion is that for many years property has been seen by many as the “go to” investment however moving forward I no longer think this will be the case.

If a company owns the property portfolio then the tax which is paid on the profit of the business is corporation tax.

At the moment, the corporation tax rate is 19% however this is going to drop to 17% in the next tax year (2019/2020) making the idea of holding properties within a limited company or specifically a SPV (Special Purpose Vehicle) quite attractive.

This is because a lot less tax will need to be paid which means a much greater net profit.

I must caveat that any landlords who do decide to move their private property portfolio across to a SPV would need to take proper advice because there are lots of implications to consider including stamp duty, lending criteria for new mortgages and various other considerations.

That said, at face value, it feels like these tax changes will nudge many landlords to move across to this type of model going forward. www.wolverhamptonwestmag.co.uk

41 CLUB

As I write the first Wolverhampton West 41 Club article of the year it is a great time to reflect on the achievements of our club in its first nine months of existence since its formation and subsequent Charter Night in March 2019.

Having taken the decision to start a new 41 Club the first question that we had to ask was ‘Would we attract any members?’.

Fortunately, the answer was a resounding ‘Yes’ and under the

chairmanship of Andy Timbrell the club is establishing a solid membership base of around twenty friends and colleagues and we are seeing healthy numbers attending our meetings.

The origins of our new club lie in Wolverhampton Round Table 17 and for those who are not aware of Round Table and 41 Clubs, Round Table is an association that was created in 1927 and is, essentially, an environment for professional men to meet, socialise, network, have fun and raise money for charity.

Wolverhampton Round Table is one of the oldest in the world, being the 17th Club to form an organisation that now boasts 35,000 members in 60 different countries. And 41 Club? That became the association to continue

the socialising, charitable work and fellowship once you were too old for Round Table!

The highlight of the year was having the opportunity to share in a superb night, organised by Gerry Hobbs of Tettenhall 41 Club, to celebrate the 90th Charter Night of Wolverhampton Round Table 17. Eighty members, past and present, of Round Table were there and Wolverhampton 41 Club and the 41 Club of Wolverhampton West enjoyed the company of past-Tablers from Seisdon, Lichfield, Willenhall and Tettenhall among others and the memories flowed thick and fast.

The year was rounded off by our Christmas Sleigh week.

Traditionally conducted

by Wolverhampton Round Table it was a joint event this year. Visiting local schools and many areas within Perton, Pattingham and Codsall it is was great fun and a good way to boost the coffers for charity with almost £3,000 being raised.

Hugh Porter’s

80 for 80 challenge Over 60 cyclists took to the track on Sunday 26 January at WV Active Aldersley to complete Hugh Porter’s 80 for 80 Challenge.

The multi-world champion and Commonwealth Games gold medallist completed 80 laps in 90 minutes along with the cyclists he invited to join him for his birthday challenge.

Mayor of Wolverhampton, Councillor Claire Darke, dropped the flag to mark the start of the event before taking to the track on her own bike to complete some of the 80 laps.

The aim of the challenge, which was held to celebrate Hugh’s 80th birthday, was to raise money for Compton Care. Approximately £6,450 has been raised for the local charity where he is a patron, and there is still more to come in.

Whilst the action was taking place on the track, a 90-minute outdoor spin class was held in the grandstand for WV Active customers and members of the public to get involved.

Taking part in the outdoor spin class were three of City of Wolverhampton Council’s directors, Deputy Chief Executive, Mark Taylor, Director of City Environment, Ross Cook and Director of Public Health, John Denley.

Councillor Steve Evans, cabinet member for city environment, was there to support the event and said: “The event was absolutely fantastic and there was a great atmosphere in the stadium.

“Well done to all of those who took part in the cycle and the outdoor spin class; we’re honoured to have

been involved in the event and to host it at one of our leisure centres.

“I’d also like to thank Hugh and everyone else involved for putting on such a unique event to raise a substantial amount of money for Compton Care.”

All Aboard the Rotary Shelter Bus! A unique solution to rough sleeping.

The sight of folk sleeping rough in the streets of Wolverhampton is becoming more commonplace.

Nationwide, according to figures released by the charity Shelter, more than 300,000 people – equivalent to one in every 200 - are officially recorded as homeless or living in inadequate homes.

This figure is drawn from official Government data and Freedom of Information returns.

Although rough sleepers are the more visible end of homelessness, it is estimated that 60% of those who are homeless do not actually show up on official figures. This is especially true for single people who, despite holding down a job, for a variety of reasons have no home of their own.

In Wolverhampton, Rotary has decided to give a boost to the work of our local homeless charities, Enterprise Homes and The Good Shepherd, by trying to make a difference in a unique way – a mobile hostel, using a bus!

The bus has been donated by National Express and, as a result of an enthusiastic drive by members of the Birmingham Breakfast Rotary Club, backed by Wolverhampton’s 5 Rotary clubs, funds have been raised to pay for its conversion into a sleeping accommodation unit.

It is capable of providing beds for 10 people in sleeping pods, together with a kitchen, consulting room, two shower/toilet facilities and a dining area. Rotary in Wolverhampton

has been closely involved with fundraising and the conversion of the bus and it has now been donated to the local homeless charities, who will be fully responsible for its operation.

Rotary will continue to raise funds to support the on-going operation of the bus, but, says Richard Green, of the Rotary Club of Wolverhampton, “It is vital that we hand over the responsibility for the well-being and safeguarding of the boarders to the professionals of Enterprise Homes and The Good Shepherd, who are qualified to give the highest standards of care.”

The bus will drive around the City – about 30 miles every day – and when a rough sleeper is seen, the bus will stop and the volunteers on board will chat to the homeless person and offer them accommodation and food for the night.

Using the consulting room, while the bus is stationery, the volunteers will discuss ways of arranging employment, permanent accommodation and general care resources.

At the end of its run, the bus will go to the new Good Shepherd Centre at 65 Waterloo Road, and be securely parked up for the night.

The rough sleepers will make their own way to the Centre to take up the free accommodation and hot meals provided. Under each individual sleeping pod, there is a small cage for dogs, which many of the rough sleepers have, to spend the night on board as well.

The Friends of Bantock House Museum & Park It is thought by many people that little gardening needs to be done in winter, but experienced Registered Charity gardeners know No 1065808 that nothing could be further from the truth.

Here at Bantock the BUGs (Bantock User Group) team had a very busy February involved in various projects.

Early in the month help was given to the Rangers in clearing part of the wildlife pond to ensure that it continues to provide a healthy environment for its inhabitants and those around it. Fortunately the date chosen for that task turned out to be a calm and sunny day so team members didn’t mind too much getting slightly damp.

The plants for this project had been purchased using money awarded to the Park from Ward Funds.

Their next session was spent filling gaps and generally filling out the longer edible hedgerow across the park, and planting 6 fruit trees within it. Saplings were also planted in the shorter hedge, although the waterlogged ground there had forestalled plans to plant further fruit trees along it.

FOLLOWING YOUR DREAMS ONE MAN’S QUEST TO BECOME A PUBLISHED AUTHOR Eddie Johnson is, on the surface, just a regular guy, flick forward a few pages and you can see his advert for domestic appliance repairs, but his deepest desire has always been to be an author.

About forty years ago Paul Weller produced ‘That’s Entertainment.’ It wasn’t immediately released as a single and only ever peaked at number 21. Eddie had many groups of friends. Some liked bands such as AC/DC, Iron Maiden, and Motorhead, others preferred Madness, The Specials, The Beat etc, his loyalties were often tested. Back then he was the rarest of breeds, a skinhead, moon stomping, heavy metal, headbanger. His hair was cropped short, his jeans held up with unnecessary braces, but he also rode motorbikes and wore leathers. The Jam were a million miles from either of his tastes.

The poet John Lydgate wrote it, President Lincoln quoted it, “You can’t please all of the people all of the time.” Regardless, one day whilst relaxing at his best friend’s house, Eddie heard the lyrics to That’s Entertainment and they stuck with him. Being with this very friend at this very moment, was, as would be the case on many occasions, pivotal. The last verse of the Weller masterpiece reverberated around his head and he calmly said: “Dave… If ever I finally write a book, that’s what the title will be!”

Incidentally, according to Weller himself, the lyrics were written in about 10 minutes whilst drunk after getting home late one night. Contrary to this Eddie’s book took many years to start and nearly as many to complete. In 2006 inexplicably he started to experience multiple repetitive dreams. After years of dreaming about writing, ironically his own dreams were now to become the subject matter. As the project grew and his desire to be published evolved, he soon found that getting literary representation for his ideas was very difficult. It seems that, whether your book is good or bad is largely an irrelevance.

Getting noticed is the key. So, whilst continuing to seek representation he chose to take a different route to market. His path lay between agent driven traditional publishing and the modern route of self-publishing. Forty years in the making it is now a dream realised. Part two is expected to be released in the next few months.

BEEF IN GUINNESS

WITH HERB DUMPLINGS

Preparation: 20 mins

Method

Cooking time: 3 hours

Heat the oven to 150C/fan 130C/gas 2.

Serves: 4-6

Heat a little of the oil in a large oven-proof pan.

Stew Ingredients

Lightly flour the pieces of braising steak and fry in small batches until well browned. Remove them with a slotted spoon and place them on a plate.

2 tbsp oil 1kg braising steak, cut into large pieces 2 tbsp plain flour, well seasoned 3 onions, sliced 500ml Guinness 2 sprigs thyme

Dumpling Ingredients 75g butter, frozen and grated, or 75g suet 150g self-raising flour 1 small onion, grated 2 sprigs of thyme, leaves stripped and chopped Water for mixing

Add the onions to the pan and fry on a fairly high heat until they soften and tinge brown at the edges.

Pour the Guinness into the pan, letting it bubble up, then return the meat to the pan along with the thyme. Cover the pan and transfer to the oven for 2-2 1/2 hours or until tender. The sauce will sweeten and thicken during the cooking time.

Make the dumplings (towards the end of the cooking time) by mixing the grated butter or suet, flour, onion and thyme together and season well.

Gradually add water to the dry ingredients until you have a soft dough. Divide into 12 balls.

Place the dumplings on top of the casserole and return it to the oven, uncovered, for 25 minutes. Serve with shredded Savoy cabbage.

Willows Dental Reaching New Heights As part of Willows Dental Charity and Community Program, Kirun, one of Willows long standing Dentists has visited Nepal, famous for its Himalayan Mountains for two weeks.

Kirun made the amazing decision to travel to the Shree Mahendra High School, Neelkantha in the Dhading district. After studying for so long to get where she is today, and coming from a community who place a strong emphasis on serving and helping others, Kirun felt that doing this was one of many ways to give back.

This was something Kirun has always wanted to do, an opportunity to provide healthcare to others less fortunate than ourselves in the UK, and to be

able to use her skills to assist others in need. Kirun also felt that this provided the opportunity to challenge herself and experience a different way of life. The trip was undertaken by the Oral Care for Developing Countries project.

Due to the horrendous weather conditions, the roads leading towards the school where Kirun and the rest of the dental team were going to be located were severely damaged, this meant the route had to be taken on foot which ended in an incredibly difficult trek that took hours and hours!

Due to the horrific damage to the roads, it was impossible for Kirun and the team to stay at a local B&B approximately 1 hour away as planned.

Therefore, half of the team slept in the school library and the other half slept in tents on the school playground.

Throughout their stay in Nepal, the team faced many challenging and upsetting scenarios. On day four, a heavily pregnant woman had walked for miles to reach Kirun, requiring urgent help as she was suffering with a severe dental abscess and was in extreme pain.

This caused a lot of distress for the people who had been patiently waiting for days to be seen, as people were desperate to get to the front of the queue knowing their opportunity was coming to an end.

On another day, the team travelled to a local family to treat their father who has been paralysed for 30 years, unable to leave his home.

They performed an extraction whilst the patient lay on the ground on his stomach (the only position he was able to keep), next to a Buffalo! That evening, the family bought fresh buffalo milk to the camp as they were so grateful for the teams help.

During Kirun’s stay in Nepal, she had the amazing opportunity to mentor Nepali dental students

and newly qualified Dentists – who acted as the team’s translators.

They were also accompanied by three professional trekking guides who set up tents for the camp, kept a close watch on the team and cooked some of the best food Kirun has ever tasted in her life.

Throughout Kirun’s stay, the camp treated over 1,250 patients!!

The team had originally set out to only see pupils of the school however; this turned into their families, the staff, and anyone else who turned up in desperate need of help. People were travelling from other villages as the news of the incredible team’s arrival had spread fast.

Kirun saw how refined sugar is creeping its way in diets everywhere, not just in the West and the devastating effects this has on the mouths of children all over the globe. This really was the experience of a lifetime and Kirun would thoroughly encourage others to try something similar if they are able to, as this experience will show anyone the local community in a way that a hotel never could. wolverhampton west magazine

Caroline – It is always frustrating that a sale can fall apart just because a buyer or a seller changes their mind about a sale / purchase just because of a whim or a fancy, despite the fact that the innocent party may have incurred substantial costs. I appreciate that it is an impossible task in some respects, but I would love to see a system put into place that delivers more certainty to the process once a sale has been agreed.

Just how secure is your home?

It’s a question which seems to keep few of us awake at night.

What to do at work in the morning and other lifestyle pressures seem to take precedence except for the occasional mind-wander onto the subject – usually after we’re prompted by a news report or word reaching us about a spate of break-ins in the neighbourhood.

Regrettably what spurs most of us into action is the stark reality facing victims after their private sanctuary is violated in the worst way.

They say an Englishman’s home is his castle, so isn’t it about time to fortify your defences against the dangers we all face on a constant basis? Isn’t it time to stop thinking about home improvements and soft furnishing until we get our house in order?

Simple and relatively cost-effective measures such as installing outdoor security lights, using gravel instead of tarmac, keeping hiding spots behind bushes and walls to a minimum and locking tools and ladders away in a secure spot all help. Another must-have for any concerned homeowner right now ought to be installing anti-snap, anti-bump and anti-drill AAA rated locks.

A recent survey of 1,000 UK adults carried out by LED Hut found a total of 69 per cent of Brits fear they will be burgled, but few are active in taking steps to ease peace-of50

Prepare for the growing season

Beware of sharp frosts in March and April that will spoil vulnerable plants and soft shoots – have some fleece handy and check the weather forecasts, if we’re likely to get a frost put the fleece over the tops of plants to protect them. open start spraying them fortnightly against black spot, mildew and aphids, best control is achieved by using two different products alternatively, so pests don’t build up a resistance to one particular chemical.

Dead head spring flowering bulbs as they finish, particularly daffodils, leaving the green foliage on and top dress with fertiliser, they’ll send the food back to the bulb and you’ll get a better display of flowers next year.

Snowdrops can be split at this time of year into smaller clumps.

Remember to dead head spring flowering bedding plants as well to encourage more flowers. Pansies in particular are a cold weather plant and the mild wet weather during the latter part of December did them no favours. Black spots on the leaves are a symptom of this mild weather. Remove as much as possible and keep plants on the dry side if you can. As the spores can lie dormant in the ground avoid planting pansies/ violas in the same position for 12 months. Plants can be sprayed with systemic fungicide to discourage disease spread.

Many of the summer flowering bulbs and tubers can be planted outside as the weather warms up – Lilies and Gladioli. Always

plant lily bulbs on their side so that water doesn’t lie in the scales and cause them to rot. Lilies, especially Tree Lilies benefit from being started off in pots and planted outside once growing strongly. They don’t reach their full potential in height for a couple of years but are well worth the wait. Dahlias can be started off in pots inside, then planted out once the danger of frosts has receded. Begonias should be pressed gently into potting compost, curved side down – never completely covered, water and keep on a light sunny windowsill or in a heated greenhouse.

With so much damp weather over the last few months there’s going to be plenty of moss in lawns. We have in stock MO Bacter which is a slow release organic fertiliser for lawns. This feeds the lawn over a 12 week period and contains bacteria which are naturally found in the soil and which when added to fertiliser will consume material like thatch and moss, making it unnecessary to rake or scarify after treatment.

Watch out for late frosts if you’ve got potatoes in tubs with plenty of leaf growth – always protect at night. Plant your first and second early potatoes, followed by maincrops, again watching out for late frosts once the foliage appears.

Thanks to Paycare’s recent support of the Express & Star’s award scheme, the team had the honour of sharing much-deserved recognition with two hugely inspirational people for their continued work to help others.

The Heroes Awards 2019 took place at Marston’s House on Thursday 16th January where Paycare was joined by all the award winners, guests, and fellow sponsors including McDonald’s, WHP, HomeServe, Marston’s and the Mander Centre.

Anthony Burns, Commercial Director at Paycare (formerly Patient’s Aid Association) had the pleasure of presenting Ambassador of the Year and the Hero of the NHS award.

He said: “We were honoured to have supported the Heroes Awards 2019 and were blown away with the quality of the entries we received.

“We had the opportunity to learn about so many special individuals who go above and beyond in our communities each and every day, so to pick just two winners was incredibly tough.”

After sifting through so many deserved entries, it was 13-year-old Louis Johnson who was crowned our very deserved Ambassador of the Year. Since the age of just five, Louis has fundraised over £25,000 for charities in the region such as Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, the Steve Bull Foundation, Mary Stevens Hospice and Cry Wolves, including £9,000 for Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

We were also thrilled to recognise Andrea Bexton as our Hero of the NHS for her work as a Sister in the Neonatal Ward of New Cross Hospital. After experiencing two pregnancy losses, a baby boy who was born prematurely weighing just under

2lbs, and a little girl who also had complications, she decided that her purpose was to work in the neonatal department to help other families and babies in times of difficulty.

Andrea commented on her win: “I wanted to give something back and I’ve been through quite a lot – but I’ve got my dream job now. It’s nice to see the babies go home with their parents. And it’s wonderful to get this award, it’s really nice.

All the hard work has paid off.”

Being part of the Express & Star Heroes Awards was hugely rewarding and we were thrilled to sing the praises to all of those who deserve every ounce of recognition.

We’re ecstatic for Andrea and Louis, as well as for all the other winners who were recognised on the night — we wish them all the very best in the months and years to come!

Following the launch of its staff charity initiative last year, Paycare is calling all good causes in the region who need help to get in touch.

Its MyGiving scheme sees each staff member provided with £250 which they can either donate directly to charity or use to amplify one of their own fundraising initiatives such as a marathon or skydive — helping them to make an even bigger difference.

“Which is why we’d like to invite any local causes, projects or charities in need of support to get in touch. While some of our team have causes they’d like to support due to having personal experiences with them, others may luckily have not been touched by a particular issue and so we’d like to know more about what people are doing to help others in our county.

She said: “It’s been a wonderful initiative, and although we’re all already part of Paycare’s commitment to giving back, it just strengthens our individual sense of purpose at work. I can’t wait to plan my volunteering days and MyGiving fund for this year, and look forward to seeing what the rest of the team will be doing!”

Peter and Ruth Goss took over the care home in October 2018, and with the home manager, Kerry Roberts, have brought a unique approach to the home which has enriched resident’s lives.

“We want to create a real ‘home from home’ for our residents, a welcoming place for their family and friends to come and visit - whatever their age. We are a family-run care home and we know just how important family is.”

And, that’s why Peter and Kerry have constructed a programme of events which involves residents’ interests and preferences and serves to bring residents together with their family and friends:

“We have held some great events since we took ownership of the home. Our classic car show which took place in our grounds last summer - was a fantastic success. Elvis is a favourite for some of our residents and so we arranged a tribute act to perform for them too. We have plans to host similar events this summer and build on last years success.”

There are no visiting limitations for resident’s family and friends and there is even a dedicated children’s play area on-site for the younger generation to enjoy.

Care staff also ensure there is never a dull moment at The Willows and spend time with residents playing games and puzzles or just simply having a friendly chat. We have a new activities co-ordinator starting who was voted ‘Carer of the Year’ in 2019 and is heavily involved in the local community and fundraising.

With strong roots in the local community, Peter sources most of the ingredients for The Willow’s home-cooked meals from local suppliers such as ‘Pete’s Produce’.

“We pride ourselves on the high-quality and nutritious meals that we serve our residents and we’re always keen to support the local area because our community is very important to us.”

Every resident is treated as an individual at The Willows and a care plan is constructed for each resident’s own needs and according to their own choices.

POPULAR CHILDREN’S MARKET RETURNS… This April Penkridge Market will be holding another fantastic Children’s Market, giving you the opportunity to sell all of your unwanted items; find fantastic bargains, plus give the kids a great day out at the same time.

The Market, which will take place on Sunday the 26th April, will be entirely dedicated to children, with stalls selling everything from nearly new children’s clothes to toys and handmade crafts. Over 60 stall holders are expected, selling a variety of goods from clothes, toys and books to handmade wooden toys, knitted items and personalised gifts. The majority of stalls will be undercover in the indoor market, making it a fun day out whatever the weather.

There will be lots of animals for the children to meet, with ‘Farm on Wheels’ providing a petting farm and giving children the opportunity to bottle feed their lambs. Lower Drayton Farm will also be bringing

along a tractor for children to sit on, as well as animals to feed.

Kate Kingsley, who was the brainchild behind the event said: “We had a fantastic response to the event last year, with thousands of people attending and commenting on how much they enjoyed the day. I think parents really value the fact that they can pick up incredible bargains and keep the children amused at the same time. It also gives parents the opportunity to sell their nearly new children’s clothes, toys and equipment without commission, and with a stall only costing £12, they can hopefully make a great profit.”

By Helen Taylor If you’re local to Brewood then you’ll already know that to enjoy amazing food, a fine selection of drinks and a fantastic dining experience there is only one place to visit, The Oakley Arms.

And, if you’re not local, then it is time to discover just what the fabulous country pub has to offer, which is exactly what I did when I treated myself to a well-deserved Saturday night out with my partner Matt.

Making our way through the pretty village of Brewood, we headed a short distance outside of the centre before pulling up at the pub. Despite it still being fairly early when we arrived, the car park was already busy, and, it would soon become clear why.

Stepping inside we were met by the warmth of a roaring open fire which was the perfect welcome on a bitterly cold February night. Heading straight to the bar, we passed plenty of happy-looking diners who were enjoying all manner of delicious-looking dishes.

With a bar stocked full of fine wines, spirits and beers, there were plenty of tipples to choose from. With a glass of wine in hand, we were led to our table by bar manager Tom and sat down to take a look at the restaurant’s impressive menu.

Admiring the beautiful decor, which exudes country charm, I glanced outside and was amazed to see a lake set within stunning grounds and

a pretty stone terrace that undoubtedly provides the perfect outdoor seating area in the summer months.

Despite the lovely view outdoors our attention quickly turned back to the menu which was complete with a selection of mouth-watering starters and delicious-sounding main courses.

Rooted in modern British cooking but with an exotic twist, the seasonal menu has something for everyone and is supported by a wine list offering quality yet affordable selections.

To start, Matt chose ‘pan seared scallops with caramelised parsnip puree, crispy pancetta, chestnuts and apple gel’ £11.95. I adore halloumi so, unsurprisingly, I opted for the ‘halloumi fries with sweet chilli sauce’ £5.25.

Beautifully presented, each starter combined a delightful blend of flavours which proved to be the perfect introduction for the courses to follow.

Our waitress, Yas worked hard to ensure that our every need was met as we eagerly awaited our main course choices: ‘deep fried cod in beer batter with chips, mushy peas and tartare sauce’ £14.25 and my selection, ‘wild mushroom tortellini with baby leek, king oyster mushroom and Madeira broth’ £13.95.

Again, the presentation was excellent and the portion size generous.

The quality of the ingredients was clear, as was the undeniable skill of the chef. All conversation was fixed solely on the food and we couldn’t stop enthusing about every bite.

Once our plates were well and truly cleared we moved on to dessert.

Of course, our expectations were now incredibly high and our selections didn’t disappoint.

Matt couldn’t resist the ‘lemon tart with fresh raspberries and Chantilly cream’ £6.25, for me the ‘dark chocolate and praline torte with boozy cherries and cherry sorbet’ £6.75 was impossible to refuse.

Savouring every delicious mouthful we finished off the delightful desserts and agreed that The Oakley Arms was undoubtedly our new favourite restaurant.

And, judging by the almost full restaurant it seemed that there were plenty of other diners who shared our view.

Soaking up the atmosphere and enjoying a couple more drinks before leaving, we couldn’t help but make plans to visit again next weekend so that we could enjoy the whole experience all over again.

The Oakley Arms will be launching a new menu in March 2020.

There’s an amazing day out waiting for all of the family in the picturesque surroundings of acres of beautiful South Staffordshire countryside, as our feature writer Helen Taylor discovered one sunny Sunday afternoon.

I’d been trying to find the perfect birthday gift for a special friend all morning when I drove down Tom Lane - on my way to Telford - and stumbled across Halfpenny Green Wine Estate.

I’d passed the vineyard plenty of times before but never taken the time to drive up and see just what was on offer. And, I was so glad that I did.

Within minutes of entering the estate’s fabulous shop and deli - which is stocked full of delicious culinary treats from leading suppliers, as well as freshly prepared meals made onsite by the vineyard’s own chefs - I’d soon filled a basket full of mouth-watering buys that would delight any foodie.

Making my way up to the Wine Loft, still in search of that special gift, I found a bottle of the estate’s own Sparkling Rose and discovered that the label could be personalised for my own message, and what’s more, that my haul of tempting treats could be turned into a special hamper.

I picked up a selection of bottles of the most popular wines: a delightful Penny Red, Penny Black, English Rose and Black Country Gold – each of which offers excellent value for money at just £9.50.

The estate’s own gift vouchers completed the present perfectly and so, I turned my attention to finding something special for myself.

Alongside award-winning wines, there is a fabulous selection of gin, whisky and rum and there’s also a specially designed outside space that is perfect for tastings.

The Wine Loft’s newly-built balcony offers guests a space to sit back and relax and take-in the fabulous views of the vineyards, whilst sampling the estate’s finest wines.

Unsurprisingly the Wine Loft is a favourite with connoisseurs and in addition to tastings, guided tours are available, as 81

well as a special educational course which is run by the estate’s own Wine and Spirit Education Trust accredited expert, Helen Farquharson, for those keen to learn more about wine.

With lunchtime fast approaching the enticing smell of Sunday dinner led me to the estate’s restaurant where I found a menu that had something for everyone: a choice of roasts, sandwiches, salads, paninis and homemade burgers. So, I called my partner to tell him to bring the kids and join me for lunch.

Everything at the restaurant is freshly prepared using locally-sourced products and ingredients and the menu is changed seasonally. The food was quite simply delicious and the estate’s ‘Long Acre’ dry white, complemented it perfectly.

The restaurant is also the setting for the vineyard’s ever-popular Vintage High Tea which is available seven days a week (subject to booking) and there’s a weekday menu made-up of lunchtime classics and modern favourites - cooked freshly to order - served between 12:00 and 3.30 Monday – Saturday.

There’s also a dedicated function room ‘The Wine House’ which is housed next door to the winery, which can be hired for all-manner of private functions.

After relaxing for a while in front of the restaurant’s log burner, we decided to head outdoors and wander around the estate’s Craft Centre, which features 15 independent businesses which each offer something different: there’s everything from gifts and crafts, candle and glassmaking to an on-site beautician, photographer and dog groomer.

Not to mention the centre’s own blacksmith who draws crowds when showing off his skills.

And then, there’s the Wild Zoological Park which proved to be a very unexpected and exciting treat for my two kids.

The park boasts an array of animals: lizards, snakes, spiders, crocodiles, parrots, vultures, meerkats and marmosets, to name just a few, and the whole experience serves to educate visitors about animals and highlight the importance of conservation. My kids thought it was amazing and we thoroughly enjoyed it too.

What is healthy ageing?

The World Health Organization defines it as “the ability to grow, learn and make decisions, to stay active. To be and do what you value throughout your life.”

Different things affect our ability to age well, including our genes, our lifestyle, our location and our relationships with friends and family.

Everyone wants their feet looking great for the summer! However, some people have nail conditions that prevent them from wearing open shoes.

“Cataracts are treated by removing the damaged lens, which is used to focus the light on the retina, and replacing it with a synthetic one. Cataract removal is a safe microsurgical procedure and is usually carried out using a technique called phacoemulsification. The vast majority of patients opt for a local anaesthetic, which means that they are awake for the whole procedure.

Some patients choose additional sedation and a rare few choose general anaesthetic, which takes a while longer to recover from.”

“Whilst many people are squeamish about eye surgery, it helps to know what is involved. I perform most of my cataract operations under topical anaesthesia by just using special drops to numb the eye – no need for needles or injections. First the pupil is dilated with drops. After anaesthetic drops, we make a small incision in the eye about 2.5mm wide. An ultrasonic probe is used to break up and emulsify the cataract.

The soft tissue is then sucked out via the probe. Finally I insert a synthetic lens with a strength customised for the patient using the biometrical measurement of their eye. It is very rewarding to see my cataract patients being able to return to the hobbies and activities they enjoy.”

What does

a hip replacement operation involve?

Hip replacement is a very successful operation.

Last year in the UK, nearly 90000 hip replacements were undertaken with the average age of the patient being sixty-eight years old.

The main reason for having this operation is unrelenting pain around the hip joint (specifically; groin, thigh & buttock). Often patients have had pain for many years, but have coped with it, using painkillers when necessary. However, as time passes the pain becomes more intrusive and starts to affect important aspects of patients’ lives.

Patients complain that walking distance is limited, they struggle to walk around a supermarket and pain at night affects their sleeping pattern.

The predominant cause of the pain is arthritis, which is a destructive disease of bony joints. In mechanical terms the hip joint is a simple ‘ball and socket’ joint, supported by a surrounding capsule and muscles, which allow it to move. Figures 1 & 2 highlight the differences between a patient who has healthy pain free hips and a patient whose hips are severely worn out and painful respectively.

In the healthy hips, there is a gap between the ball and socket which is filled with a spongy lining, but in the arthritic hips the spongy lining has eroded away and the ball and socket have become misshapen causing pain when the joint moves.

To relieve the pain, it is necessary to completely replace both the ball and socket. In figure 3, you can see both hips have been replaced. Power instruments are used to re-shape the socket to allow a hemispherical socket to be inserted into the pelvis. The ‘ball’ part of the joint, needs to be fitted onto the top of a metal stem which is inserted into the thigh bone and fixed in the bone with cement.

The operation takes just over an hour and the average hospital stay is three nights. On discharge, patients are able to walk with crutches, can manage stairs and can expect to be driving in approximately six weeks.

As this operation, relieves patients’ symptoms, without a shadow of doubt, it leads to a better quality of life and many happy individuals.

Liz, who started playing tennis at the age of five, began as a mini red player to move through to now be part of the girls’ squads, entering LTA competitions and also helping as a volunteer with the Saturday squads at the club.

As the weather starts to become more amenable, and the grass court season and Wimbledon looms more into view, the sport of tennis often returns to the forefront of the public consciousness.

Already 2020 has seen the club host a hugely successful Kick Start programme of a week-long schedule of fitness classes and dietary advice, and several successful tennis and squash competitions.

DIY probate -

Is It Worth It?

As part of the HM Courts & Tribunals Service Reform Programme to modernise courts and tribunals, the probate service is becoming a digitally-enabled national service.

Moving forward probate will be handled by Courts & Tribunals Service Centres which has led to the closure of all probate subregistries and associated public counters. With the changes implemented to centralise and modernise the way in which Probate is obtained, it may be seen as an opportune time to attempt to deal with a probate application yourself but this isn’t always as straight forward as it may seem. An increasing number of people are risking costly litigation due to the perception that dealing with an estate without professional advice will save money in fees but this is often a false economy leading to significant problems later on.

Potential pitfalls and problems When someone dies they will either pass away testate (leaving a Will) or intestate (without leaving a Will). If there is a Will, the executors named are responsible for dealing with the estate administration and will need to satisfy themselves that the Will is a valid Will. There are a number of factors that can invalidate a Will that people are often unaware of, such as marriage after the execution of a Will or problems with the execution itself. If a Will

is found to be invalid it could have serious implications for the beneficiaries which could cost a significant sum to resolve. If there is no Will then a set of rules called the Intestacy Rules will apply and determine who is able to administer the estate and how the estate is distributed.

One role of the executor is to ensure the terms of the Will are carried out correctly. An executor therefore needs to understand the effect of each clause of the Will and any associated implications in respect of tax and inheritance. Even small estates can be complicated and if a Will contains a trust there are strict rules to be followed in administering a trust correctly such as potential registration of the trust at HM Revenue & Customs. Often trusts are included in a Will for protective purposes and if a trust is not set up and administered properly there may be adverse consequences for the beneficiaries.

The person authorised to deal with the estate needs to compile information in respect of all the estate assets and liabilities.

This time consuming task can often appear daunting but in order for the size of the estate to be determined and declared accurately, it is essential the information obtained is accurate and reported to HM Revenue & Customs using the correct forms.

Depending on the value of the estate inheritance tax may be due; if this is the case it should be paid by the end of the sixth month after the person’s death.

If any tax due is not paid within this timeframe HM Revenue & Customs will charge interest and personal representatives could

find themselves criticised by the beneficiaries of the estate for any such late payment.

The role of a personal representative can often be onerous, time consuming and is an unpaid task. There can be personal liability for any mistakes made which cause a loss to the estate. Special care also needs to be taken if there are any doubts as to the solvency of an estate.

New bill to shake-up

UK marriage laws The film Marriage Story makes an Oscarwinning drama out of an American divorce.

But changes on the way to the law in this country mean real-life separation should not have to be so difficult, says FBC Manby Bowdler family law solicitor Kate Rowley.

The Oscar-winning success of the film Marriage Story – about an American couple going through a protracted divorce – has once again highlighted the difficulties involved in any marriage break down.

Actress Laura Dern picked up the best supporting actress Oscar for her role as family lawyer Nora Fanshaw in the Netflixproduced movie about a couple in the throes of separation.

The couple – played by Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson – initially agree to an amicable separation, but after communication breaks down they eventually end up in court with Dern playing the role of a hard-nosed US divorce lawyer trying to get the best-possible financial settlement for her client.

It makes for a terrific on-screen drama although the kind of combative court room scenes you see in the film are rare in the UK. And there’s certainly more than a degree of truth in its portrayal of the US legal system. But for couples watching in this country, where moves to no-fault divorce are already under way, the lessons to be drawn are somewhat different.

start the divorce process by having to assign blame for the breakdown of a marriage.

This is something the Family Law team at FBC Manby Bowdler has been campaigning for a number of years.

Blame is almost inevitably built in to the current system. At the moment one spouse must allege adultery, unreasonable behaviour by the other or else wait two years to start divorce proceedings. All three options invariably lead to both sides becoming polarised and focusing on the mistakes of the past rather than how they can move on to a better future.

Alongside this, until divorce proceedings are begun, financial issues cannot be resolved with any finality so often people have no choice but to get started immediately.

Under the new laws now finally beginning their progress through Parliament, it will be enough for one spouse to say that the marriage has broken down irretrievably without attributing blame to the other’s behaviour. The changes will also stop one partner refusing a divorce if the other one wants one, although defended divorce is very rare.

Our belief is that these new laws will make it easier for people to work together at the end of a marriage to reach an outcome which is best for all parties. We know from experience that in most cases there is fault on both sides and starting a divorce by assigning blame is unhelpful.

The Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Bill entered Parliament on 7 January and promises to deliver the biggest shakeup to marriage laws in this country for half a century.

A ‘no-fault’ system will, by its very nature, help focus minds on the outcome of the divorce rather than looking backwards and playing the blame game over just what went wrong and who did what to whom. If children are involved, this can only help the separating parents to work together to care for their children at a difficult time.

Often that means compromise and taking a pragmatic view of a situation. Rather than unnecessarily heightening conflict, we usually encourage clients to look at the bigger picture and focus on what really matters. When we no longer have to assign blame, we will be able improve our work to ensure the process is less confrontational, less protracted and less painful.

And whilst that may not necessarily make the sort of Oscar-winning drama portrayed in Marriage Story, it has to be a truly positive outcome for people trying to negotiate their own real-life divorce.

Wrekin College launches new bid to help promote business skills in schools across the region A school which hit the headlines amid calls for more children to be taught employability skills will now lead the way in helping youngsters from dozens of schools to launch new businesses.

Headmaster of Wrekin College Tim Firth has spoken out to call on schools to take a more proactive role in getting pupils ready for the workplace.

He has claimed far too many universities are now operating a buyer’s market allowing almost anyone to get in as tuition fees also deter even the brightest pupils from seeing it is an automatic choice.

Now Wrekin College is going to run a region-wide competition to find entrepreneurs of the future in a Dragons-Den style event.

It will aim to kickstart a variety of businesses run by young people, including school children aged as young as 11.

Mr Firth said today the scheme would not only invite teams of youngsters to bid for backing for their own venture but would also train an army of teachers to

help coach children in business studies and workplace skills.

It will include YouTube tutorials, training workshops and class planning content which could be used in schools across the UK, youth groups and by youngsters educated at home.

The initiative will work in conjunction with Telford & Wrekin Council’s ‘Young High Street Challenge 2’ which is just one strand of their highly successful Pride in High Street campaign which aims to boost local High Streets in Ironbridge, Madeley, Dawley, Oakengates, Newport and Wellington.

Invitations have gone out to schools to enter with a celebration fair planned for June where teams will showcase their business idea and pitch for a package of prizes including start-up funding and mentoring by high-profile business leaders.

While the school is celebrating that 40 percent of its applicants to Oxbridge have been offered a place Mr Firth said it was not enough to just teach towards good grades.

“Schools need to ready their cohort for life outside of the classroom so that they are ready for work in what is an

ever-changing landscape.

Children now have more choice about where their future will lead them and schools need to adapt to that,” he added.

Head of the Wrekin Business School Donna Irving said they were delighted to be delivering this initiative which would not only kick start new businesses but would provide a rich resource of training materials for all schools to improve employability skills across the board.

“We are very excited to be at the forefront of this drive to promote work skills and encourage youngsters to think about running their own businesses and what the world of work means to them.

We will encourage the ideas to be diverse and although the ideas will have a connection to improving the High Street which is struggling to respond to changing customer habits and trends, we are looking for innovation here and schemes which aim to do things differently.

We need a sustainable High Street, where people want to shop and encourage economic growth across the business community.”

Amarjit Cheema OBE

On Thursday 5th of December 2019 Amarjit Cheema, CEO for Perry Hall MultiAcademy Trust attended Buckingham Palace to receive an OBE Award for her services to education presented by Prince Charles.

This was an incredible honour for Amarjit who was accompanied to the palace by close family members.

On achieving this award, Amarjit said: “I had no idea I had been nominated so didn’t expect it at all.

Other people from my past have contacted me to congratulate me and that’s been so overwhelming.

People I work with were not surprised, just delighted and I just feel exceptionally honoured and humbled. My family are elated and my son who is 33 and my daughter 30, are just so proud of me and that means a lot”.

Amarjit began her career working as a nursery nurse in 1993 and worked her way up to getting her first Headteacher post in 2004.

In 2010 she began her role as Headteacher for Perry Hall Primary School which later converted into an Academy in 2013 (The first 132

single primary academy conversion in Wolverhampton). Since then, another five schools have joined the Trust, three in Wolverhampton – Berrybrook Primary School, Dunstall Hill Primary School, Woodthorne Primary School, one in Tamworth – Bird’s Bush Primary School and one in Worcester – Stanley Road Primary School.

Amarjit is also an Ofsted Inspector and a National Leader of Education, with a proven history of supporting and improving the outcomes for many schools both within and outside of the Wolverhampton area.

West Midland Safari Park has an exciting year planned for its guests, with new arrivals, new exhibits and the introduction of luxury accommodation.

To kick-start the year, the Park announced the arrival of seven African lion cubs. After a gestation period of around four months, ten-year-old Scar gave birth to three cubs on 27 August 2019, with the second litter of four cubs following three weeks later on 17 September 2019, for seven-year-old Amber.

As with all animals born at the Park in 2019, keepers have chosen names for the cubs beginning with the letter ‘H’. Scar’s cubs have been called Hunter, Hercules and Hernatty (two males and a female), whilst Amber’s are named Harabi, Hodge, Havoc and Hira (three males and a female). The adorable youngsters can now be seen in Realm of the Lions on the four-mile safari drive-through.

The lion cubs aren’t the only exciting new development on the safari, as work has started on upgrading the animal facilities as well as improving the overall guest experience. The development is part of a five-year plan and starts with creating brand-new, state-of-the-art housing and outdoor spaces for the African elephants and cheetahs.

In addition to the new animal facilities, integrated into the new exhibits will be eight

West Midland Safari Park is open daily for its summer season from 15 February. Admission prices are £24.00 for adults, £20.00 for children aged 3-15 years and £22.00 for concessions. Children under the age of three are free. Admission includes a summer Free Return Ticket and discounts of up to 35% are available when booking in advance online. Rides for the adventure Theme Park are charged extra.
