Elite Series Overview

The result is a comprehensive world-class range of bicycles for the world-class rider to the serious enthusiast. We’ve put every ounce of our passion for cycling into the range and I have complete faith in these bikes.”

Pivotal to the brand new Boardman Elite Series is the Boardman Bikes mission statement of ‘Pure Performance’. Each of the Elite frame platforms is designed, developed and specced for a specific intended purpose without compromise.

All Elite products undergo a rigorous development and testing process that includes CAD, Finite Element Analysis, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Wind Tunnel testing, numerous stages of prototyping, mechanical stress testing as well as real world testing by our Elite athletes and the Boardman development team. Every detail on the Elite Series is there for performance, for example, the lightest, stiffest and most aerodynamic way from A to B is generally a straight line, the profile of that straight line is where the science is applied to get the performance attributes required for its intended application. This is why you won’t see a curved tube on a Boardman frame unless there is a performance reason for it. The award-winning Elite Series has been used by World-class athletes to win multiple Olympic, World and European titles.

Design Philosophy: Technology

Holistic Optimisation When designing frames and components with aerodynamic properties, it would be easy to do what bicycle designers have generally done for the past decade and just pick one of the nice NACA (The National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) prescribed profiles and the bike would ‘look aero’. However, this approach is technically flawed as the aero challenges a cyclist faces are very different to those of an aircraft.

Our development process takes into account the lower momentum, highly variable cross wind speed and direction (+20 degrees of Yaw) as well as other real world factors encountered by a cyclist. But we don’t stop there. In our aero modelling process, we take into account not only the speed, types of airflow and equipment shape, but also the effect of the rider and other components on the overall aerodynamic performance. The interactions between all these things has a dramatic effect on the overall drag. When modelled taking all of this into account the ‘ideal’ tube forms for a bicycle are quite different to the original NACA form. Our holistic approach to aerodynamics assures a form that is truly aero for the environment in which it will be used.

Design Philosophy: Technology

We use four core high-tech scientific tools to achieve this: 1. Computer Aided Design (CAD) First step, we convert our ideas (based on years of aero modelling) into CAD designs; 3D models so we can develop them in a virtual environment with virtual tools. This extends to not only the bicycle and components but also the rider who is 3D scanned to ensure that we have a virtual rider we can use in our product design and CFD analysis to ensure we get as close to real world results as possible. 2. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) We take the CAD ideas and test them using sophisticated CFD programs, (aero testing in cyberspace) in order to model the effect of airflow over the shapes we are interested in using. CFD can show us a highly detailed aerodynamic analysis of the bicycle and allow us to pin point areas we can improve and tweak until we are happy with the result. There are often dozens of trials in CFD before we are ready to move on.

3. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) Once the shape is defined, we run FEA over the design using the specific load paths applied by the rider but at far greater forces to identify how the stresses and loads are distributed across each component. Using this information we can again tweak the shape of the tube or part if required, decide on the specific grade and type of material we need to use, how much or how little we need in each area to get the best combination of strength, stiffness and lightweight and, in the case of carbon fibre, what orientation we want the fibres laid. 4. Wind Tunnel testing As soon as we have a physical prototype we utilise wind tunnel testing to give us highly accurate results of the true aerodynamic performance of the product. At this stage we can decide whether we have the desired result and proceed with production or go back through the CFD and development process.

Carbon Engineering

Like all computer programs, they are only as good as the people who program them; a computer program may be able to answer a question but it cannot tell you if it is the right question to ask! To be able to do that and fully realise the potential of these wonderful tools you need experience, time, resource and most importantly imagination.

Understanding the properties of different carbon fibre types is key to gaining the maximum advantages from this wonder material. Because of the amount of experience we have amassed, our frames use a lot of Uni-Directional Carbon Fibre which, if used properly can result in a 70% increase in stiffness and strength over more common, cheaper, woven carbon cloth (utilising UD takes considerably more skill and understanding to use). Our particular combinations of carbon type, layup and toughened resin mixture are closely guarded secrets.

The Boardman Team has been involved in the development - and use - of some of the very best bicycles for the last two decades. In that time, we have learned the value of a team approach, exploring, often outside the world of cycling for new technologies (recently in the world of F1 and military technology) and taking the time to really understand all the demands of the event that the bicycle is intended for. By taking these steps we can blend practicality and technology in the right quantities to offer the athlete the best blend of characteristics.

The last part of the process is when we make it real. We choose our suppliers and partners very carefully, all of them have a very advanced understanding of our high technology processes but just as importantly they share our passion for producing awesome product; they go to great lengths to make sure the final product meets all our detailed exacting standards. The design team works very closely with the production team right through the process to make sure every ounce of our technological understanding goes into the final product.

Design Philosophy: Technology

Wind Tunnel Testing Aerodynamics, and the understanding of aerodynamic principles is fundamental to our frame designs. So far we’ve talked a lot about the materials but just as importantly, our chosen frame geometry allows the rider to assume a super aero position, allowing them to pass through the air as efficiently as possible. We’ve combined the aero efficiency with exacting bike geometry which produces an aero bike with excellent handling properties. What’s this got to do with aerodynamics? Because if the handling is good, the rider has confidence to stay in the aero position longer through twists and turns. Getting these things in one package is no mean feat!

When considering aerodynamics, it’s important not to just consider the results obtained from controlled wind tunnel testing, these are a fantastic tool but don’t fully replicate real-life race situations, where the rider interacts with the bike. Using our Natural Laminar Flow methodology of modelling and shape tubes, we get better performance in all the airflow situations commonly encountered by bike riders and not just in a head-on air flow but at angles of yaw greater than 20 degrees. These shapes can be seen clearly in our down tube and fork profile. The Natural Laminar Flow Optimisation process has been applied to all our AiR series of framesets, giving up to 25% improvement over traditional teardrop tube shapes.

Specification Detail AiR: Aerodynamic Racing The AiR ‘Aerodynamic Racing’ frame has been developed in the wind tunnel with one goal, to make a super fast aero road frame which has the aerodynamic properties of a TT frame with tube profiles specifically designed for real world head and crosswind conditions along with precise yet predictable handling for road racing.

The New AiR frame is super slippery thanks to its wind tunnel developed down tube, seat tube and seat post profiles. Further airflow gains are made by the fully internal cable routing, the hidden internal front brake on the 9.8 level product and the profile of the fork and seat stays with their special shape designed to reduce turbulent airflow between the frame and the rotating wheel. This frame is also super stiff and responsive due to its one piece optimised oversize chainstays and PF30 bottom bracket and tapered steerer. SpeciďŹ cation Detail AiR/TTE: Aerodynamic Racing - Evolution The New AiR/TTE frame is fast and we mean fast! Every detail has been developed with one thing in mind... to defy physics. Designed using the latest Computational Fluid Dynamics technology and wind tunnel testing, the super slippery AiR/ TTE module has been designed to be as aerodynamic as possible in real world wind conditions. Integration has been taken to a new level with all cables hidden inside the frame, handlebar and stem. The AiR/TTE has been proven to save significant time over the already fast world title winning AiR/TT.

Whilst the numbers in the wind tunnel speak for themselves, the AiR/TTE is about real world performance. Therefore road bike like handling characteristics, power transfer through the PF30 bottom bracket, oversize chainstays along with rider positioning with a four position seat post have all been taken into account.

SpeciďŹ cation Detail AiR/TT: Aerodynamic Racing The New AiR/TT frame is fast and we mean fast! Every detail has been developed with one thing in mind... to defy physics. Designed using the latest Computational Fluid Dynamics technology, the super slippery AiR/ TT frame features tube profiles designed to be as aerodynamic as possible in real world head/cross wind conditions, fork and seat stay profiles designed to work in harmony with disc and deep section wheels by minimalising turbulent air flow along with hiding the front brake inside the fork, tapering the headtube as narrow as possible and careful cable routing all ensure that the frame moves through as much clean air as possible.

Whilst the numbers in the wind tunnel speak for themselves, the AiR/TT is about real world performance. Therefore road bike like handling characteristics, power transfer through the PF30 bottom bracket, oversize chainstays along with rider positioning with a four position seat post have all been taken into account.
