What’s this life for? by Sherry Gillespie
EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US HAS ASKED THIS QUESTION at some point in our lives. In the natural, this world is not an easy place to be. As we go through the monotony of life: work, the commute, school activities, homework…we can lose sight of the simple things we are called to do. Have you done something for Him today? Is your life worthy of the gospel? Philippians 1:27 (Amplified) says, “Only be sure as citizens so to conduct yourselves [that] your manner of life [will be] worthy of the good news (the Gospel) of Christ…”
Ah, yes, the little things. Small, but so very important to a Father who loves us! A smile to someone in need … a hug to a hurting friend … finally taking the time to make that call to someone who keeps coming to mind … He can use us as vessels on a daily basis if we’ll just be open enough to listen. Take time everyday to be used by Him. I remember being in a store one day; a lady who looked like she carried the burden of the world on her shoulders was in line in front of me. I smiled and tried to make small talk with her. She ended up telling me that she had a son
I am very sad to say that I haven’t always lived a life pleasing to God. I grew up in a denomination that taught the cross. I have always believed that Jesus was the Son of God, and that He died for my sins. I prayed daily, yet I didn’t know how to live for God. I just walked around conducting myself like the rest of the world. Yet deep inside I had a knowing that something was wrong.
who had had a child out of wedlock; this had upset her tremendously, because he was raised in church, and she didn’t bring him up that way. I shared with her that I, too, had been a rebellious teenager, and that she should trust that she had planted the seed of God inside her son, and that he would eventually come back. I told her, “Never give up on him; just love him and pray for him.”
As I look back, I am so thankful for the mercy and long-suffering of a God who loves me and sees the end from the beginning. I rededicated my life to God in 1995. As He daily teaches me His love, I am more challenged today than ever before to live my life in a manner pleasing to Him.
She smiled for the first time in probably a long time, as she said to me, “Thank you so much! You have been an angel for me today.” I left the store in tears because God loved her enough to reach out to her in her time of need. I went into that store to purchase something, not to minister to someone. But as I took the time to be kind to someone, God blessed her.
I recall a day when my mind was racing, and I was trying to think through twenty different things and cook dinner at the same time; all the while, my children were relentlessly calling, “Mom, I need this…. Mom, Tyler did that…Mom I need a drink…” In frustration I hollered out, “Get up and get it yourselves – I am not your servant!” The Lord addressed this comment almost as quickly as I let the words slip out of my mouth. “Oh yes, you are,” He said, “I gave you those children, and you will serve them.” I did not hear an audible voice, yet every bone in my body heard it. My entire body shuttered as I sat down in a chair to repent and replay what had just happened. Daily life and the little things are very important to God. He does not want me in bondage to my children’s pleas for every little thing. Yet in this situation, my attitude was not right, and I was not walking in His love. 2 | V I C T O RY F E L L O W SHIP CHURCH | WWW.VFGARNER.COM
How many opportunities have we missed to bring a word of encouragement to others? Let’s not become so overburdened with everyday stuff that we forget why we are on earth. Life is about HIM. Find something you can do for Him today. Jesus said if we give food or water to someone in need, we have indeed given it to Him. Give of yourself today. It doesn’t cost very much. Give a smile or a hug … volunteer at church … let’s be open, willing vessels to be used on a daily basis. I leave you with a few lyrics from one of my favorite praise and worship songs, Lifesong by Casting Crowns, “Lord I give my life, a living sacrifice, to reach a world in need, to be Your hands and feet, so may the words I say, and the things I do, make my life song sing, bring a smile to You.” Does your life song sing to Him today?

It was a humid August morning. My heart was heavy with dread. It was not yet 7:00 in the morning, but I was already hurting, sweaty, tired, and more than ready to retreat back to civilization. The mosquitoes seemed bigger than I remembered from before, and I longed to quit. The enemy was waiting for me, I knew. I could hear their buzzing and zinging. It was just a matter of time. It would be a painful skirmish. Alone and armed with only a five-gallon bucket, I faced the scene of the coming battle. It would be me against the wasps. I knew that even if I surrendered, I would not leave the pea patch unscarred. I had been given my orders. The peas had to be picked. As a child, I truly believed my family’s mission each summer was to feed every man, woman, and child in Sampson county, all from our garden. I knew this was so because my job was to pull every blade of nut grass and water every single plant. Later in the season, I was also privileged to pick, dig, pull, and cut the produce that grew. I was never consulted about the length or number of rows in our garden; had my family asked, they would have been much shorter and far fewer. I knew before I was a ‘double-digit” that I intensely disliked – dare I say “hated” – gardening. I also felt I was treated unfairly. Because my brother was allergic to bee stings, he received amnesty from most of the work in the ‘battle zone.’ He was also pardoned from shelling and snapping because he bruised the produce. The only thing that kept me going back day after day was respect for and fear of my mother, although hunger probably had something to do with it, too. Today I view gardening differently. I begin looking at seed catalogues during the winter, anticipating that morning when I’ll wake up and just know it’s time to plant. I enjoy the feel of cold dirt between my bare toes, and I feel a great deal of satisfaction now when I pull a weed off a row. I’ve learned to use bug spray, and I no longer fear wasps. My mother is so proud of me … and my children are concerned for my sanity!
What happened between childhood and adulthood to change my attitude towards gardening from dread to anticipation? My middle child says that I got too many bee stings, but I think that maybe I started seeing some of the principles of gardening at work in my life. For example: 1. If I till my soil (build my faith) and get rid of the rocks (bad habits) and tree roots (false beliefs) in my garden (life), it will be easier for my seeds (gifts, talents) to germinate and grow (bless others). 2. I’ve learned that both mulching (reading the Word) and regular watering (praying) greatly reduce the number of weeds (temptations) I have to deal with. 3. Fertilizing (fellowshipping with like-minded believers) at regular intervals strengthens my plants (sharpens my walk with God). 4. Pruning (repenting of sins immediately) keeps my crop healthy (helps set the right example for my family/circle of influence). 5. Rotating crops (change promotes growth) and allowing areas to remain fallow at times (keeping the Sabbath) help provide an increased harvest (more fruitful life). I’m still pulling weeds, squashing offensive bugs, and scaring away the occasional predator, which is usually the neighborhood dog. But I spend most of my gardening time enjoying the simple pleasures of anticipating the next planting, sharing God’s bounty, counting my blessings, and praying that my children will one day choose to plant gardens of their own. “While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest shall not cease … ” Genesis 8:22

THE RAPTURE PRECEDES THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST We are living in days of exciting change worldwide. As never before in history, our world is preparing for the Rapture of the church, and for the Second Coming of Christ. We may be the generation that the prophets of the Old Testament spoke of who will actually witness the Second Advent.1 I want to share with you some truths about the next great event that will take place in the kingdom of God, the rapture of the church! In this article, you’ll gain some specific insight into this physics-defying event! The rapture may in some ways be likened to the TV show Star Trek in which Scotty beams the inhabitants of the Enterprise to another location instantaneously! We should live with the expectation of the catching away of the saints,2 or what we call the rapture of the church. Notice that the word rapture is not found in scripture. It’s from the Latin word rapere, from the Latin translation of the Bible. Though not found in the Bible, it correctly summarizes the event of being caught away, and is used frequently today to reference this grand event. The New Testament gives Christians a hope in the return of Christ to remove us from the difficulties of this life and to rescue us from the wrath to come.3 The New Testament teaches that Jesus is actually coming back twice. First, He’s coming back for the saints in the rapture of the church. Then, a few years later,4 He’s coming back in His Second Coming5 with the saints6 when He will establish His millennial reign,7 and bring all of His enemies into subjection under His feet.8

A MYSTERY REVEALED
RAPTURE IS IMMINENT; “ITTHE COULD OCCUR AT ANY MOMENT.
Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed - in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” 9 Let’s look more closely at the rapture of the church and see what it includes. This event could very well happen in our lifetime. Notice in the verse above that Paul said, Behold, I show you a mystery. This word mystery is from a Greek word10 that means to shut the mouth, a hidden purpose or counsel, or a secret will. The rapture is a mystery11 that was not mentioned in the Old Testament but was revealed to the church through the Apostle Paul.12 The rapture is a mystery that has been revealed exclusively to the church and is found nowhere else in scripture but here in the New Testament, primarily the Epistles (letters written to the churches).

WE WILL RECEIVE NEW BODIES FIT FOR THE GLORIES OF ETERNITY In 1 Corinthians 15:51, Paul says, we shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed. There will be those who do not experience physical death! They will be raptured, and their bodies will be instantaneously changed!13 When the rapture occurs, a trumpet will sound, and the bodies of the dead in Christ will rise from the grave and be transformed into new bodies that will enable them to live in heaven and throughout eternity in God’s presence.14 Then those who are alive at that time will undergo a physical transformation while being whisked off the earth by God’s supernatural power. Paul says in verse 52: In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye… The word moment in Greek speaks of the smallest divisible unit, a millisecond.15 He further states: in the twinkling of an eye. This means the batting of an eye.16 This event will be so quick that there will be no prior notice or time for preparation. We must live ready for this event!

(16) For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. (17) Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words.17
This is the other major message in the New Testament that explains in some detail the mystery we call the rapture. In verse 13, Paul mentions that we are not to sorrow as others who have no hope. Tombstones in the first century would often bear the phrase “no hope.”18 Thank God that we as Christians have the hope of the resurrection of the body and of life beyond death with the Father in heaven! Verses 14 and 15 above reveal that when Jesus comes back in the rapture, He will bring with Him the spirits of believers who have already died.19 They will be reunited with their new, glorified, physical bodies there in mid-air. Somehow, the power of God will raise their bodies from the grave and instantaneously transform them into bodies just like Jesus had when He was raised from the dead.20 Then in verse 16 above, we read that the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet of God. At Jesus’ ascension, angels told the disciples that Jesus would come back in like manner as they saw Him go into heaven.21 Here Jesus literally comes down into the atmosphere of the earth to receive us to Himself. The shout mentioned is literally an order, a command, or a stimulating cry.22 I believe this will be heard in the realm of the spirit as Jesus summons us to come to Him. At that time, the dead bodies of departed saints will change and come alive with new vitality and meet with the spirits of their owners in mid-air!
FIVE SHADES OF MEANING FOR CAUGHT UP Those who have died in Christ will go before those on earth at the time of the rapture. The church will be caught up23 to meet Jesus in earth’s atmosphere and then follow Him back to heaven. The Greek word for caught up has five shades of meaning that reveal to us what will occur during the rapture.24 First it means to carry by force.25 The principalities and powers of darkness that surround the earth26 will seek to keep Jesus from taking us away by force, but He will simply demonstrate their defeat once again. Caught up also means to rescue from the danger of destruction.27 I believe that right after the rapture will be the time called The Tribulation. It’s a time of the wrath of God being displayed against unbelief and the lifestyles it produces.28 God has promised to deliver us from the wrath to come.29 Thirdly, caught up means Divine Power transferring a person marvelously and swiftly from one place to another.30 With the same ability that Jesus used to create the universe,31 He will summons us to heaven in an instantaneously changing moment of time! The fourth shade of meaning for caught up is to claim for one’s self eagerly.32 Jesus is excited about bringing us to heaven to be with Him for eternity. And the last meaning for caught up is to snatch out and away.33 This event will catch the world completely by surprise, and has the potential to throw it into great turmoil with so many people disappearing at once with no rational explanation.
AMBASSADORS RECALLED When one country declares war on another, one of the first things that happens is that the ambassadors to these nations are recalled. When the rapture occurs, the tribulation is set to
begin. The rapture is in essence God recalling His ambassadors and declaring war on earth against the unbelief of man. The tribulation is a time of the wrath of God manifesting towards unbelief, against the unbelief of the nations that reject God’s plan for Israel, and against the unbelief of individuals that have sneered at God and His wisdom.
THE CHURCH REMOVED BEFORE TRIBULATION There are several reasons that I believe the church will not be here during the tribulation. First of all, notice the Wuest translation of 2 Thessalonians 2:3, Do not begin to allow anyone to lead you astray in any way, because that day shall not come except the aforementioned departure of the Church to heaven comes first and the man of the lawlessness is disclosed in his true identity.34 This passage in Thessalonians reveals the timing of the disclosure of the anti-Christ and shows this occurring just after the rapture of the church. Once the anti-Christ signs a peace treaty with Israel and her neighbors, the tribulation begins. And we won’t be here! Read the whole chapter of 2 Thessalonians 2.

Secondly, as I mentioned earlier, the tribulation is all about God’s judgment against unbelief. Jesus has taken God’s wrath on our behalf. He has delivered us from the wrath to come.35 We are those who have received God’s mercy in the place of His wrath! The third reason I believe that the church will be removed from the earth at the start of the tribulation is because of the sequence in the book of Revelation. Notice that Jesus addresses the seven churches in Revelation 1-3. Then Revelation chapter 4 begins with the words, Come up here.36 Revelation chapters 4 and 5 show scenes of the church in heaven, and I believe it’s after the rapture of the church. The church is not mentioned again in Revelation after this until chapter 19, when we are shown coming from heaven with Jesus at His second coming!37 Revelation chapters 6-19 are a depiction of what will occur during the tribulation. This section has to do with God’s wrath and judgment and does not affect the church. The church is not mentioned in these chapters!
ALL BELIEVERS WILL GO IN THE RAPTURE

Some people believe and teach that some believers will not go when the rapture occurs. They say that only those who are filled with the Spirit and are looking for His coming will go, and that those who are carnal will be left behind. The text used to support this belief is the parable of the wise and foolish virgins found in Matthew 25. But Matthew 25 is not written to the church about the rapture. In context, it is written to the Jews and relates to the Jews being ready and prepared for the Second Coming of Christ.38 I believe clearly that all Christians, carnal and spiritual, will go in the rapture of the church. If not, where do you draw the line between who is spiritual and who is carnal? All of us at times have to repent when we miss the mark and sin. All sin is disobedience to the known will of God. How do you determine which sins keep a Christian from the rapture? When the rapture occurs, I believe all Christians will go, the spiritual and the carnal. There will be the bold and the ashamed that will appear in heaven at the time of the rapture. 1 John 2:28 reads: And now, little children, abide in Him, that when He appears, we may have confidence and not be ashamed before Him at His coming. Those who are ashamed at His coming will be those Christians who are not giving God their best and are catering to their flesh. They are saved, although so as by fire.39 Those who are bold are those who are fully seeking the purpose and plan of God for their lives.
The rapture is imminent; it could occur at any moment. There are no prophecies to be fulfilled for it to occur. We are encouraged to live as if each day were our last day on earth! I’ll leave you with the Apostle Paul’s admonishments to be ready for Jesus to appear to take us home to heaven. Make the adjustments you need to make today! And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.40 But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you. For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation. For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him. Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.41

Also called the Second Coming of Christ The Greek word for caught up in 1 Thessalonians 4:17 is harpazo, which means to seize with force, to snatch up. The word harpoon comes from this Greek word. Romans 5:9; 1 Thessalonians 5:9 Yes, I believe in the pre-tribulation rapture of the saints to heaven; the reasons are listed at the end of this article. There are at least seven years between the rapture of the church and the Second Coming. According to Daniel 9:24-27, there are seven years of Jewish history left to be fulfilled in Daniel’s prophecy. In verse 27, the anti-Christ makes a peace treaty with Israel. This signals the beginning of the tribulation, and I believe the rapture will occur somewhere around that event. Some confuse the Second Coming, or Advent of Christ, with the rapture of the church. They are two separate events. Jesus spoke of His Second Coming to the Jewish race in the gospels in Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21. These chapters deal with the Second Coming, and should not be used in reference to the rapture. Rev 19:11-14: Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. (12) His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. (13) He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. (14) And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. The armies of heaven mentioned here are the saints of God that have been raptured and have appeared before the judgment seat of Christ. Revelation 20:1-4: Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. (2) He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; (3) and he cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal on him, so that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished. But after these things he must be released for a little while. (4) And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. 1 Corinthians 15:24-25 1 Corinthians 15:51-54 musteerion Ancient Greeks used the word musteerion to speak of ancient religious rites and ceremonies practiced by secret societies (such as our Freemasons today). Those in these secret societies become privy to knowledge not revealed to those outside the group. As members of the family of God, He has let us in on His secret counsel. Ephesians 3:5-6: which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets: (6) that the Gentiles should be fellow heirs, of the same body, and partakers of His promise in Christ through the gospel. Philippians 3:20-21: For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, (21) who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.

14. An interesting side note here: Why do we need glorified bodies in eternity? The answer is that God never wanted our bodies to die in the first place! God created humanity to live for eternity in human bodies in the pristine, perfect environment of earth. Adam’s sin brought spiritual and physical death to the human and a curse on this planet. At the rapture, God will clothe the previously dead and currently alive saints in bodies that will enable them to live in eternity in human bodies that are actually better than the original. Jesus came to undo the works of the devil, that is, to bring us back completely from our fallen state. The results of Jesus’ sacrifice far exceed what sin and death removed from this planet! 15. The Greek Word is en atoma – that which cannot be cut – an indivisible unit of time. Before the discovery of protons and electrons, the atom was the smallest divisible unit of time. We’d call it a nanosecond today. 16. The Greek word is rhipe, a jerk of the eye, or an instant. This term was used by the Greeks for the flapping of a wing, the buzz of a gnat, or the quivering of a harp. 17. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 18. A custom of Paul’s day was for mourners to be hired when a family member died. The hired mourners would wail and shriek loudly, kick dust into the air, and put it on their heads. At times they would even pull out their hair! The idea was that the more grief shown, the more the person was loved. 19. At death, the spirit of a believer leaves the body and goes immediately into the presence of God! God never planned for human life to exist permanently without the “clothing” of a body. See 2 Corinthians 5:1-8. 20. Tremendous powers of locomotion will be available that transcend the laws of physics as we understand them. Jesus materialized in a room full of disciples after His resurrection while the doors and windows were shut tight! Then, He disappeared into thin air. Perhaps we’ll be able to travel at the speed of thought! 21. Acts 1:11: Who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.” 22. CALLED TO FELLOWSHIP THURSDAY, JANUARY 3RD 2008
God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord (1 Corinthians 1:9). We have relationship by birth and fellowship by will. Being birthed into your family does not mean that the family members fellowship together. Fellowship is on purpose. We are called to fellowship with the Lord Jesus. Too many have the relationship with the Lord, but lack the sweet, intimate fellowship that He so longs to have with all of His children. Fellowship is a heart sharing. It’s two people with commons goals and interests connecting at the heart level. Fellowship is the mother of faith. Strong faith comes from deep, intimate fellowship. Weak faith comes from a lack of personal intimacy with the Lord. Intimate fellowship with the Lord is possible because through the New Birth, He has made us righteous! Righteousness is the ability to stand before God as though sin, fear, condemnation, or inferiority had never been a part of your life! Righteousness produces boldness (Proverbs 28:1). The work of righteousness will be peace, and the effect of righteousness, quietness and assurance forever (Isaiah 32:17). Once you renew your mind and know that your Father loves you even when you fail, you’ll be able to enter into fellowship with Him. Fellowship produces light in your life. For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we see light (Psalm 36:9). It gives you the ability to see clearly the issues in your life and around you. The will of God becomes clear and focused. Fellowship produces joy. For the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit (Romans 14:17). These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full (John 15:11). You will show me the path of life; in your presence is fullness of joy; at your right hand pleasures forevermore (Psalm 16:11). Joy makes Christianity attractive. It brings with it evangelism. . . . . .
