s i b l i ng r e v e lry This issue features one of the more important sports twosomes in our country today—the Younghusband brothers. I admit that I am a fan, not only of their football prowess, but more so of their gentlemanly ways, and how the boys have instantly taken to their role as guardians to their youngest sister after their mother’s passing. I have a soft spot for father-figures, probably because I did not really have one of my own, so I wish nothing the best for James, Phil, and their little darling, Keri.

We’ve decided to do a 2-cover summer special with another famous sibling, but one in the U.S. who is noted for her performance as the eldest daughter in the American show, Full House. Candace Cameron-Bure (AKA sister to ‘80s heartthrob, Kirk Cameron) is downright lovely and takes on a more adventurous fashion spin in our pages. Speaking of down-to-earth families, Candace’s brood is nothing short of, and are some of my favorite people to work with. Summer style (in a country that boasts of “rainy” as its only other season) is more enjoyable in terms of experimenting with color. This issue brings you staple and must-save-for pieces that heighten one’s sartorial pursuits. Beauty products take on sun protection and staying power, keeping in mind our ever-changing needs due to the moodiness of the heat these days. On the topic of siblings, my third child (a boy for the first time) will be born in three months’ time. For his sake and my sanity, I have foregone a lot of my planned trips for a more controlled environment at home. However, our writers have been busy. They whisk you away to some destinations that require only that monumental decision to board a plane (armed with some pocket money, naturally). Get an insider scoop on our roundup on Neal’s Yard in London, Imperial Pursuits in China, and two dining haunts in Hong Kong. And of course, SPARK’s Annual White Party at the SPARK House in Punta Fuego helped us celebrate the heat and Lenten season with somewhat open arms. All fresh-faced and ready to party, the guests indulged in good food and beverage, and in even greater company. And with that, I raise you all my glass of sparkling grape juice as a toast to more exciting months ahead.

Pop icon, Madonna, teamed up with Alek Keshishian (who previously worked with her for her 1991 documentary, Truth or Dare) to weave the story of Wally Winthrop, a socialite living in Manhattan, who comes across the auction of various artifacts of Wallis Simpson and Britain’s King Edward VIII, the controversial leader who abdicated the throne for the woman he loved. Wally, who is going through an unhappy marriage laden with domestic violence and child-bearing problems, gets obsessed with what she considers the ultimate love story in recent history—Wallis and Edward. When Wally meets a Russian security guard at Sotheby’s, sparks fly—and so does her imagination. She finds an instant connection with Wallis, the American divorcee who captured the heart of a king.

The film, which has been toured in various film festivals, features Abbie Cornish as Wally Winthrop, James D’Arcy as Edward, Andrea Riseborough as Wallis Simpson, and Oscar Isaac as Wally’s love interest, Evgeni. Co-written, directed, and co-produced by Madonna, the film was inspired by the controversial lives of Wallis and Edward, whose love story is told through the eyes of a modern day woman. When traveling, I always see to it that I visit health food stores and Homeopathic apothecaries just to see what products they have for personal care. This time, we were in London and I asked my husband, Job, to take me to at least one store. The train ride was about 45-minutes from where we stayed at Kingston upon Thames. Then there was the walking. It was lunchtime and I was starving! My husband was holding this city map, looking for the place. It seemed like we were in an Amazing Race episode, walking through alleys and cobblestone streets, which was pleasant and enjoyable, so I didn’t mind my grumbling stomach. After a while, we turned to an alley that led to an extremely charming courtyard. This was it—Neal’s Yard. Surrounded by very tall buildings which had lovely colorful windows, the shops at the ground floor had equally pretty entrances that it was impossible not go inside every one of them. For a bit of history, Neal’s Yard is named after Thomas Neale, who acquired the land in 1690. It used to be a dark, ratinfested, abandoned area that contained a few warehouses of fruit and vegetables that were traded during those times. It wasn’t until Nicholas Saunders, who started the whole food enterprise, that Neal’s Yard became famous. He sold produce such as nuts, honey, vegetable oils, and cider vinegar for very cheap. There was a sense of family and community among his workers. According to Mr. Saunders, his old idea of a village community is shown in the form of a community of small businesses, each one individual, and even though the businesses are each independent, everyone who works in them, and many of the regular customers, identify with the place. The Yard, according to him, has developed into a social scene but still retains an air of distinct community.

Neal’s Yard is a quaint off-the-beaten-path sort of place in Covent Garden. Shops are small and close to each other. The courtyard is dotted with benches and tables, and was rather filled with the lunchtime crowd. Although full, it did not feel crowded or suffocating. While waiting for our table, I enjoyed people-watching and taking pictures. I also peeped inside some of the shops nearby. There was The Little Shop of Funkiness. The entrance to the store was a bright pink color, and this delightful store was filled with colorful items for the home such as storage boxes, bags made from paper, straw or bamboo, ceramic plates, cups, and glasses. Further down there is Hair by Fairy, a trendy salon that offers body piercing services. Across it is The Walk-in Back Rub, which offers 10, 20, or 30 minute back rubs (clothed) or full shiatsu massage that will take your tensions away. Towards one end is Slow Food UK, a store that offers different products from all over the world like olive oil, spices, and cookies. Slow Food (the opposite of Fast Food) is a global movement with members from around the world that connects our enjoyment of food with the community and environment. Taking in the healthy vibe, we had lunch at the Neal’s Yard Salad Bar, a restaurant that served vegan, vegetarian, and non-vegetarian food. We enjoyed the Chick-pea soup and Bolinhos de Bacalhau, codfish balls with soyannaise dip. I especially liked the Rice flower bruschetta with tomatoes, olives, garlic, and basil. My husband tried the apple, beetroot, carrot, and ginger juice. What a wholesome and nourishing 38

meal indeed! And the sole purpose of this trek, the highlight of the day was visiting Neal’s Yard Remedies, a little Mecca of sorts for organic skin and body care, natural remedies, therapies, and treatments. I find it exhilarating to be able to spend quite a bit of time inside health food stores. I like skimming through all kinds of organic products like shampoo, lotion, soaps and toothpastes. My favorite is to browse through different supplements, healing remedies, and creams. Imagine what it felt like when I went inside this store? Neal’s Yard Remedies is a lovely store selling organic cosmetics. They have toners and moisturizers, lotions and serums, lots of things for the skin and body (and soul). The most beautiful thing about it is that all of their products are free from harmful ingredients and chemicals. The staff is very knowledgeable and kind. The saleslady patiently helped me and gave some suggestions for my concerns. I ended up buying Frankincence Nourishing Cream, Arnica Salve, Urtical Cream, and Calendula Cream. Filled with joy and with several products in tow, we left Covent Garden to go on a hop-on, hop-off tour of the city. / / / /

There are usually three main components that one considers when travelling. There’s the sight-seeing, which more often than not takes up a large portion of your time. And then, as in most cases for the Asian traveler, at least a full day is devoted to shopping. And finally, one’s full experience of a particular destination is culminated in the food. A progressive and global city in every respect, Hong Kong has recently become a choice destination not only for luxury brand shops, but also for fine-dining establishments that are run by some of the world’s most revered chefs. With the flourishing of the haute cuisine scene in Hong Kong, Michelin stars shine ever brighter over the city’s diverse offering of flavors and aromas. The dining experience in Hong Kong encompasses both innovation and tradition, infusing into every detail the highest taste levels not only for gastronomy, but service and interiors as well. Our first stop: the ultra modern Felix restaurant located on the 28th floor of the Peninsula Hotel. In this Philippe Starck-designed area, the concept of progressive luxury resonates. Splendor and surrealism are all but part and parcel of the Felix experience. Upon entering the lift, the elevator lights dim as one is lead up to an utterly dramatic area that offers an inspired view of Victoria Peak and Hong Kong harbor. On each side of the room are circular staircases that take you to a cozy lounge area called the American Bar. On the other end of the room lies an elevated area where a sleek glass long table sits to serve as a bar for cocktails. True to the ideals of modern luxury, no detail is left to spare at Felix. Each guest is given their very own iPad to browse through the menu while allowing them to also engage in interactive features like the Felix Wine Mood Wheel. Way before Starck’s Louis XV Ghost Chairs become a modern design staple, Felix was already celebrated for its design and conceptual genius. It has, in so many respects, been the very benchmark of contempo chic in the region. Cheeky yet sophisticated, Felix today continues to offer its first time guests and patrons an experience that they will remember for many years on. With the play of streamlined silhouettes and the neon jungle lights, Felix is, first and foremost, an ideal nocturnal haven—whether you are out for a cocktail, to enjoy modern European fare or simply to witness something otherworldly like glass toilets that offer a full view of the cityscape. The nocturnal appeal of Felix, more notably, befits the workhard-party-harder philosophy of its locals. Aside from the ambience and flawless service, it’s the innovative culinary genius of Chef Kaji that makes Felix a

place for must-try indulgences. During our visit, Kaji had put together a 5-course tasting menu with wine-pairing which he had cleverly referred to as the Felix Experience. The menu at Felix, simply put, is dominantly inspired by the freshest ingredients from the Pacific Rim. Each dish in the menu is meticulously put together to bring out exceptional flavors, contrasts and even evoke wonderful memories. In short, Chef Kaji manages to incorporate heaven in a bit. Hong Kong being a destination for all things diverse and dynamic, we also ventured to experience something slightly more traditional and classic. At the perpetually chic Four Seasons Hotel lies a three-Michelin authentic French restaurant, Caprice, where one is immediately transported to a world of grandeur and opulence. If anything, one’s Hong Kong fine-dining experience can never be complete without booking a meal at Caprice. Headed by Chef Vincent Thierry who worked for sometime at the renowned Le Cinq at the Four Seasons in Paris, Caprice offers a true and uncompromising fine dining experience. This is not, however, to suggest that the place is painfully stuck-up. On the contrary, the open kitchen setup creates a cozy and communal atmosphere within the space. Michelin-star chef Vincent Thierry comments, “In the beginning, the idea of working in an open kitchen was scary. Eventually, I realized that it’s beautiful. It makes it easy to break the ice. It is a contrast to such a formal setting.” Thierry and his dedicated team, who has gained for the restaurant its prestigious three Michelin stars, make sure the each and every detail at Caprice is done to absolute perfection. The gracious chef explains, “You can tell the difference from the moment you enter. The place, the service, and the people are all there to meet the expectations of the guests. We treat each detail with utmost importance. Also, you will find that that chef cooks from the heart.

Similarly, the cuisine at Caprice is reflective of the rich tradition of French gastronomy while still remaining open to innovation. Thierry describes, “The main inspirations for the menu are the products of the highest quality. It’s best to eat according to the seasons because the flavors are at its best.” Another unique and impressive feature of Caprice is its cheese cellar where the world’s finest selections from France and special jams are stored for guests to fully enjoy. a staple in our lives and as a family activity. Our children work out, and we teach them the importance of eating right and healthy. It’s never about body image, or being thin—it’s all about having a healthy heart and putting the things in your body that are good for it and will keep it running for a long time. I run, we walk lots of stairs, and Pilates is my most favorite thing. I probably work out at least five days a week, and Val works out six times, sometimes twice a day. We don’t eat fatty and fried foods. We work on it—it doesn’t come naturally. It seems charity is a big part of your life—you met your husband at a charity hockey game, after all. What charities are close to your heart? There’s an amazing one called skip1.org. We have such an abundance of money and wealth in [the U.S], that even the poor here have so much when compared to those in Third World countries. The whole concept of skip1.org, is that you skip something—a latte, lunch, newspaper, or whatever— and the money that you don’t spend on that, you donate it to the site. I normally have my lattes in the morning from Coffee Bean, and today I intentionally skipped that and went right to my computer and donated my 5 bucks. A hundred percent of what you donate goes to feeding the children across the world.

You’ve been married for over 13 years now. That’s quite a feat especially for showbiz couples. How do you manage to stay together? We are Christians, and the bible is the most important book in our house. It’s really where we get most of—with the addition of books that’s based upon biblical values— our instructions for child-rearing, parenting, and marriage. We are a partnership, but God in our marriage is the first priority. When we have different opinions, then we look to what would be most pleasing to God—not me winning my battle, or him winning, or compromising. What’s the most challenging part of being a mom to three kids—and three dogs? The amount of driving and schlepping that one has to do. Having three dogs is like having three children, so I feel like we have six kids. It’s so much work but you’ll do anything for the people or the animals that you love, so you just do it. Do you still keep in touch with your “Full House” family? I had dinner with Bob Saget recently, and the day we had our photo shoot, I made it over to John Stamos’ house. He was having a little going-away party, and I saw him and Jodie Sweetin. I talk to Dave all the time, so we’re all pretty close and get together and have dinner, lunch, or e-mail. We have, like, a “Full House” reunion on Twitter, but there’s a couple that’s still not on there. / / / /

t’s not hard to see the fuss about the Younghusband brothers. Equally good-looking, talented, and wellmannered, I am always in awe at siblings that claim to be, and in fact are, each other’s best friends. The Younghusbands are just that—in a thick as thieves, Kardashian type (male version and sans reality drama) of closeness. It is almost as if the love is palpable when you hear them speak of one another. Both soccer players by mere name association, what a normal onlooker does not know is that Phil and James are raising their younger sister, Keri, together, after having being orphaned from both parents just last 2011. Their father passed on when Phil was only 16 after a battle with cancer, and their mom succumbed to a heart attack late last year. Regardless of their personal ordeals and triumphs, the twosome recently signed a 3-year deal with AKTV to host tutorial segments as the channel’s football ambassadors. Another career feat is helping launch the Chelsea FC Soccer School, which officially spearheads the English club’s initial venture into the Philippines, apart from raising their other “baby” together—the Younghusband Football Academy. Kariz: What’s it like working with your brother? Do you ever get tired of each other? Phil: It’s great. I think one of the main reasons why we’ve done so well with football and wherever we’ve been is because we’ve always had each other to motivate each other, to support each other. Obviously because we grew up together, we share the same views and opinions. If I’m doing better than James, I motivate James to do better, and if he’s doing better—vice versa. K: I’ll ask you again when you’re 70. That’s very sweet. P: Yeah, yeah. I don’t think we can ever get enough of each other right now, because it helps us especially on the field, because we know each other so well. He knows where I’m gonna move, I know where he’s gonna move, so it’s great having James. At the end, the funniest thing is people always compare us. We’re not there to compete against each other, we’re there to compete with each other. James: Honestly, I’m lucky to work with Phil. I think anyone who works with their family, that’s the best thing, because you know each other so well. You have the same things, but there are also some things where you think differently, and if you share them then you both learn to agree with it. It’s the thing that helped get us where we are today. I couldn’t choose a better business partner. K: How was it like growing up in the UK? Aside from the weather—and I’m melting right now—what are the biggest differences? J: People are on time. Here, it’s Filipino time... (Laughter) P: All our life, we had a very comfortable life there, in the suburbs of London. We went to a nice Catholic school, and we had nice friends. And then we go home and we had our mum, and our dad. We were never stressed out there. K: It must be a bit different though, because here you have help, everywhere. Brothers: Yes, yes. K: At what age did you decide that you would play football for a living? Did you ever imagine yourself becoming this successful? Phil: We started kicking at around 2 or 3 years old, but we only started playing together against all the kids around 7 or 8. I can’t remember the exact date—we mostly grew up watching football on TV, going to malls, and seeing billboards of football players—our idols, like David Beckham and other players. At first when you start playing, it’s all about having fun and being with your friends, and giving us a chance to run around. I grew up playing in Chelsea—it’s one of the biggest football clubs in the world—and it was great seeing how the first team operates, and the ladder you have to go through to become a football player. Obviously in England, in Europe, you can earn a living, a good income through football. And once we realized we could—we were one of the elite—we had a chance of having a future and earning income through football. I think that’s the point we realized we’re gonna go for it. K: You were how old? P: I think probably around 11. K: 11. Was your father still around at that time? P: Yes, he passed away when I was 16. It wasn’t about deciding if it would be our living, it was becoming our priority over time. The closer we got to the adult age—18 years old—it became more and more a priority. J: I think it became clear when we got to about the age 9 or 10, when we were just coming to the end of grade school, and all we wanted to talk about in England was football, and you have like your role models like David Beckham, Eric Cantona—they’re big stars, the movie stars of England, and I kinda saw it—I wouldn’t mind being like them. And so at that age, you consider it for a living and it looked enjoyable so I was like, why don’t we try? We played football and enjoyed, and really wanted to keep doing it for the rest of our lives.

K: And did you ever think you’d be this successful at it? J: I had dreams. As a kid you would have dreams. Like you sit, you lie in bed at night dreaming of what you want to do when you’re old—but it’s not about the fame and the money... K: But being really good at it. J: I think the main thing was performing in front of loads of people, really. K: And at the same time, making a living out of it. J: Yeah, making a living, but also it’s the feeling you get playing in front of loads of people and hearing them cheer. Like it’s the drama, the adrenaline—that’s what really excited me about playing football. I didn’t imagine it would be here in the Philippines, because the Philippines is not a football country at the moment. K: Biggest milestones of your career so far? Proudest moments? I assume it would have something to do with the Galaxy? P: I think that would be one of them. My first one would be obviously signing my first professional contract at Chelsea Football Club, receiving my first payslip. K: What did you do with that payslip? Did you blow it all? P: Just went out, bought shoes and clothes. Earning good money at 16 years old is—it still goes to your head. We’d go out, me and James, we see these football players buying new shoes everyday. So James and I would say, “Okay, we’re going to do the same,” and start buying shoes and clothes. We slowly realized—after our mum and dad saw we were spending all this money—to save up. Another one is my first team debut with Chelsea under one of the biggest coaches in the world, and also my debut for the Philippine National Team in Bacolod at the 2005 SEA Games.

K: Not too long ago. P: Not too long ago, and the most recent one was the opportunity to play against our boyhood hero, David Beckham, the LA Galaxy, and also what made it extra special was to score a goal. J: I heard Phil earlier say it’s signing his first contract for Chelsea Football Club, and that’s the same with me, as Phil and I have done everything together, so we kind of have the same milestones because we’re best friends and we’ve had a journey together. My milestones would probably be playing for Chelsea Football Club, playing against David Beckham, against LA Galaxy especially here in the Philippines.

K: The unit. P: Yeah, the unit that you always have dinner with, who is always your roommate. Obviously, you choose the people who you’ve got more in common with. Those who grew up in the Philippines, those who grew up playing football in the Philippines, would be in that group. Those who grew up playing abroad, those who grew up in America, they stay together. When you look at actually the Sparks team, most of the players who grew up playing football in England have Filipino blood play for Meralco Sparks. In your magazine, you featured Mark and Matthew Hartmann, and they grew up in England. Those with the English accent. We’re all very close.

K: That came out of nowhere, right? J: Exactly. I don’t think it can get any better than that. Playing for your home country and in front of your idol, your icon. In the first half, we gave him a test, but the second half, was—it was fantastic, we got to see the best of David Beckham. We got to see what he was renowned for. He scored the first goal, he got loads of assists, and it really showed that he is a great role model.

K: Playing together in a sport, it’s a different kind of bonding. P: Yeah and we’re away or out of the country a lot of the time, so we need to keep ourselves busy, so we often come together for casual bonding. I’d probably say that the closest are me and my brother, Simon Greatwich, the Hartmanns, Neil Etheridge. We’re very close to the Americans, to Aly, Anton, and Jose. Also close to Chieffy. I would probably say people stick to where the accent is the same in the team.

K: Which Azkals are your closest friends? Aside from each other, of course. P: I’m being honest when I say that as a team, we all get along very well. But whether you’re in school or in a team, you have your barkada, those people you’re closest to.

K: Because you understand each other. P: Exactly. So there’s people on the English accent table, and people on the American accent table—

J: Yeah, that comes into play, but you’re close to some people. I like to think you have different relationships with everyone, like I have good times with everyone, I have no grudges against anyone. K: That’s always good. J: I think we all have our different relationships, and I think that’s what makes it special and as Phil said, you’re closest to the ones who you talk to more, so when it comes to the accents, I’m close to Phil, Rob Gier, Chad Gould, the Greatwiches, as well as the Fil-Am guys, we have great laughs together, and also the local players but there’s no one really who I am always away from, as I have different relationships with them.

K: [Talks in an old person’s voice] Kids, there was one time I was... P: David is one of our idols and it’s important as you have people looking up to you that you influence them in a positive way, and we thrive on that and we’re very happy to do that. That will make us better people. J: It was surreal. At first, I couldn’t believe he’s here. He’s probably some look alike or something. It’s all such a rush. It took a while to get used to. I remember meeting him— K: Did you have butterflies? Like a high school crush? J: Yeah. Exactly. I remember the press conference, just watching him walking out, like, “Is that him?” And then I was on the side and Phil was on the stage with him, and they were like, go on James, have a picture with him. The security helped me on stage and I got to shake his hand.

K: I find it amazing that brothers could be best friends. What was that like, meeting David Beckham? Must have been surreal. Because a few months ago when we talked, I asked you what a dream game would be for you both, and it was being able to play with David Beckham. P: And he also gave me his jersey afterwards. To get the opportunity to see him, to have a conversation with him, James and I were very, very starstruck.

K: Did you smell his hair? J: No, no. He looked good, though. I didn’t expect to be there, so I just wore a T-shirt, and my hair wasn’t fixed, so I was a bit embarrassed but I was a bit stuttering when I shook his hand. I said, “I’m a big fan.” He said, “Good to know.” I was like, stuttering. It’s something I’ll never forget. I’m proud, I’m glad it’s helped promote football here in the Philippines, really make history.

K: I heard he’s really nice. P: He is. Super kind. He kept his promise that I asked of him before the game—if I could have one of his jerseys. There were a lot of people asking for his shirt, but he was able to keep his promise and he’s very, very kind. He’s a great guy. Obviously that was a big, big deal for us—looking up to him ever since we were growing up. We’ve been copying his hairstyle, the clothes he wears. K: I told Phil that you guys should’ve come as David Beckham lookalikes and thrown him off his game. He’d be like, wow, who are those guys. J: When I was younger I tried—he’s my role model and so when I was younger I tried to—

K: You should’ve gone to the game looking exactly like him and he’d be freaked out and you would’ve scored more goals. P: I don’t grow my hair long, James likes to grow his hair long, so maybe James. So yeah, that was an amazing, amazing experience. K: How was the goal that night? P: The goal was great. I mean mostly—we still lost the game… K: That’s fine. P: But I mean, to score a goal in the same game—David Beckham scored as well—was a special feeling and I can always tell my grandkids…

K: Copy his hair? J: Yeah, stuff like that. Learn off him, football, technicalwise, model my game off him and it’s something similar to what David Beckham does. K: Are you gonna try and find yourself a Victoria? J: (Laughs) We’ll see, we’ll see. K: Describe your personal style. Fashion must-haves? P: I’m very simple, I mean I like simple colors and I don’t like anything too bright. I like the grays, the blacks, the whites, clean, simple. K: Clean-smelling? P: Yeah, not too big or too out there, or with big logos. I like something plain and simple, something smart and classic, I like to be comfortable.

The usual D&Gs, Armanis, Zegna. But locally, Rhett Eala for Collezione C2. He’s a great designer, very talented, and he’s also a great guy. J: Lately, I like being more sporty. I love to be comfortable. Especially when I’m just doing normal stuff. But when I go to events, I want to look really smart, smart-casual stuff. I don’t know, when it comes to fashion there’s always something new. I get bored with my football boots and I want the latest ones. I’m like a woman with shoes, when it comes to football boots. K: That’s funny. J: My fashion, sport, casual. I like to look my best a lot. But I know there’s some things that look good on me and some things don’t. K: It’s hard to admit sometimes, and you’re like, I want this to work for me. J: Exactly. I like the look of it, but you try it on and it doesn’t look good on you. I want it to look good on me. K: Is it true that you have an 11-month gap? J: Exactly eleven months. 4th of September, 4th of August. K: You are now 25 and 24, right? P: Yes. K: And the older one would be? P: James. K: Growing up, did you have your share of brotherly fights? J: We had loads of fights. Once, Phil stabbed me with a pencil in the arm. And it fell so deep, I was bleeding, and my mom was freaking out, which got me carried away. But we grew up together, we did everything together—swimming, taekwondo, cricket. K: Even cricket. J: If I’ve done it, Phil’s done it. If Phil’s done it, I’ve done it. We grew up in each other’s rooms. K: Funniest childhood memory involving one another? J: The boat incident. In the River Thames! P: See in the River Thames, they have boats there docked

by the side. Then there was this mini boat, a school boat. We were with a friend, Daniel, at the time. My brother is holding the rope. We’re holding the rope, James is holding the sides. So we had fun picking up the rope, then let go, then pick it up, tease everyone. I get into the boat. So James was like, oh pick it up, pick it up. So my friend decides, I’m gonna push the boat, because James is holding the rope. James, at the same time, decides to let go of the rope. My friend pushes the boat. So I’m sailing on the River Thames on my own, and I’m what, 6 or 7 years old? I was crying my eyes out, James was crying his eyes out. J: He was going down the River Thames! P: I was going down the River Thames! K: Your mom must have freaked out! P: Our mum was in the house. That was the only time I have been grounded. J: I said, “I’m diving, I’m diving!” P: James ran back home. J: To get help. P: James and my friend ran back home. It was only a hundred meters down the road to get my mum. And I end up, I’m not gonna sail away. I come down the road soaking wet. And my mum was so angry at me because of the fact that I jumped, because the current could have taken me away. That was funny, but at the time it was very scary. (Laughter) J: Our mum also told us that one time, we were really quite bad, when Phil stabbed me with a pencil. P: Because he was strangling me. So I grabbed the nearest thing next to me and I stabbed James. J: And there was the time—it was near death—a ball got stuck in the roof in this garage. P: We have a garden with a wall. And behind the wall are garages for flats. And the ball went over the wall and on top of one of the garages. So we ran around to get it. James went up, and he said, “Phil I can’t find it— “ J: Wait, wait, that’s not right, it was you who couldn’t find it! P: I couldn’t find it. James decides to come up. We get the ball. And we were happy that we got the ball. Then, we suddenly fall through the roof and landed on top of this car. The whole roof caved in. J: We were afraid we were gonna be stuck in the garage. The roof has fallen down, my leg was bleeding. P: And we were just scared, and we didn’t really notice the crash was over. So we opened the door, and we ran home, pretending it never happened. I still have the evidence from it…

K: That’s a scar from it? J: Yes. There was another time…he whacked me in the back, and I was like, aaaaaah! K: Crazy stuff. Growing up as teen-agers without your dad, was there any pressure at all for you both to be something like a father-figure? P: Our dad had been getting better for a year and a half, and he was in remission so he was getting better, there was hope. We were all very happy. And it came again and it was worse. And then he died. At the time, it was really critical in our football career. Our football club in Chelsea at the time supported us, we had a few weeks off and we stayed with our family and friends, and the funeral of course. You see when you’re playing football, you can’t think of anything else because the game is going on. Playing football got us through that time. J: And we had great friends and family. Our friends would come over after school and play monopoly with us. We stuck together as a family, me, my brother and my sister…We were only 16 and 17, and Keri was only 2 years old. When dad died, two days after it was our sister’s 2nd birthday, so he was bed-ridden during our sister’s birthday. So we had to grow up fast. But our mum kept us until we’re teenagers. Now, we’ve taken over supporting our sister, so… [Ed’s note: Phil and James’ mother passed on in 2011] K: What are your plans aside from football, and is there anything else you want to pursue professionally, aside from the game? P: Right now, it’s about playing as much as we can because maybe we have 10, 11 years left to play, so we wanna do as much as we can playing. We still have the Younghusband Football Academy, which after we’ve stopped playing, we want to dedicate more time to, develop football, develop coaching, and invest more into. It’s good that we’ve started young, the foundation is already there and we can concentrate on that. Obviously I’d like to invest my money in other places—I’m not sure where right now. I don’t want to invest in something I have no clue about. Somewhere that could get be security especially for our younger sister. We want security for our younger sister. Maybe I could be a coach for the Philippine National Team or part of the management, after I played with Meralco Sparks—Sparks? Thank you for letting us have the name, by the way. K: We were first, hehe. P: Yeah, exactly. You were first so thank you for letting us use the name. It’s very fitting that we are part of your magazine, and we play for Sparks.

K: I know, right? It’s perfect. About your sister, she looks like you? P: She looks like me. So she must be very, very pretty. K: She’s adorable. How does it feel to be celebrities, where a lot of our countrymen are very proud of you, and sort of look up to you as modern day heroes? P: It’s great. It’s a good responsibility, and it gives us the opportunity to influence people in a positive way. J: Responsibility. I love the great feeling when Phil and I coach kids, and you see a big smile on their faces. It feels really good inside when they’re playing football and you tell them to do something and they do it, and they’ve got so much more confidence and are better than in the past. I think to be part of that makes me feel special. K: What made you both decide to come to the Philippines anyway? J: We saw potential in the sport. We saw that it wasn’t the biggest sport, but people in those provinces that loved the sport had a great interest. K: Was it your mom who said that maybe you guys wanna try it out here? J: Actually, it was Phil and I, we’ve been trying out—but our mum she loved the idea of coming back to the Philippines, being closer to her family. Being back home. K: What’s your type of girl? P: My type of girl is Angel Locsin. K: I see. So that settles that. Phil, is it accurate that if you weren’t a football player, you would be a tennis player? P: Yeah, I’d like to be. There’s another one of my sports idols—Roger Federer. That’s what I was saying, the classic style, he’s very simple, smart, classic and he’s also one of those who when he behaves, he’s very professional on and off the tennis court. He has his air of confidence, sportsmanship, but he’s also very humble. I’d like to play tennis against him one day.

K: That would be a dream. P: Or at least watch him. Roger Federer is my sports idol. He’s very intelligent, very articulate, he speaks many languages. But if I wasn’t doing sports, I would’ve followed my dad’s footsteps in maybe accountancy, because I have a degree in math mechanics. K: That’s news to me. P: So yeah, if I wasn’t...but I think I’d like to be in sports. K: Either way, you make your dad proud. P: Thank you very much. K: James, you said before that if you were not playing football, you’d be a graphic artist? J: In school, I loved the arts. I loved drawing. Being honest, I was good at it. But when I was in school I used to just draw for fun. I was a talented kid in my class. But then, I focused more on football, and it kind of went away. I’d love to go back and get more involved doing arts. K: And have your own production or graphics company? J: Yeah, I’ve become a bit rusty lately. I’d love to go back to school one day when I’m not playing football, and really learn. K: Pursue that side of you. It never really goes away. J: Yeah, exactly. They say the apple does not fall far from the tree. No words could be truer for Anna Teresa “Annette” Gozon-Abrogar, who has slowly but surely made her way to the top, armed no less with the same tenacity that made her father, Atty. Felipe Gozon, one of the biggest network executives in the country today. As his eldest daughter, Annette has surely followed her father’s footsteps, earning a Master’s Degree from Harvard, and conquering the industry by storm with her exemplary leadership. If Atty. Felipe Gozon is heralded in the Gozon household as the “king,” it’s fitting that Anna Teresa—Annette, would be their first princess. If anything, their tight family ties housed under a sprawling abode designed by the family friend and architect Roger Villarosa in Forbes speaks a lot about her and her family’s personality—strong, hard-working, and continuously striving for excellence. Can you tell us more about your background as a lawyer? What made you decide to take up law? I entered the UP Law School in 1993, right after graduating from Ateneo. Right after graduating from law school, I went to Harvard to take up Masters in Law. When I returned, I worked in my dad’s law firm—Belo Gozon Elma Parel Asuncion and Lucila Law Offices, and I also taught Taxation at the UP College of Law for two years. Ever since I was a child, I already was gung-ho in becoming a lawyer. My dad probably brainwashed me. (Laughs) You have a Master’s Degree in Harvard. How has studying abroad contributed to your success? Valuable lessons you learned? I think that studying abroad broadens your perspective of any field you are in. In Harvard, legal issues and doctrines took on a more global and holistic meaning. Law became more alive for me, and I saw it as something that can be molded in order to address current needs of society. When I was in Harvard, the law of cyberspace was starting to develop, and I think this is an area which will see more developments in the near future. How did your interest in films start? Was it something you’ve always wanted to pursue? Well, growing up, I loved to watch commercial movies—both local and international. I was sort of interested in showbiz, since my dad is part owner of GMA. I never thought I would pursue a career in film-making, however. But when it was placed on my lap, I just had to embrace it. I love challenges. That’s how I approach things given to me...I embrace new challenges and I am not scared to tread new areas that I haven’t encountered before. spar k

What do you enjoy doing during your down time? I like cooking. I experiment with new dishes, and I cook for my family. I also like watching movies and reading. Top three favorite travel destinations? I love going to Japan, Paris, and Bora. What are your biggest splurges? Vacations. I think experiences are not quantifiable by monetary standards. How do you deal with controversies and challenges that come your way? I think that I am a very patient person—more patient than a lot of other people. It takes a lot for me to reach my tipping point, if at all. So if controversies and challenges come my way, I usually approach those by looking for solutions, rather than dwelling on the problem itself.

What would you consider your guilty pleasure? I love to eat! Whenever I go on vacations, they always turn out to be gourmet vacations. (Laughs) / / / /

Describe your relationship with your parents. What’s it like working with your father? We were raised to be very much family-oriented. We (myself and my two siblings) slept in my parents’ room until we were adults. We always have family vacations together and eat at least one meal a day together as a family. My mom took good care of us while we were in school and was our “tutor.” Working with my dad is a challenge, not because he is my dad, but because he has very exacting standards. Anyone who has worked under him can surely say that he/ she has been trained very well to be honest, hardworking, and analytical. What’s it like living with your parents and raising your family in one household? I like it. I am comforted by the thought that despite being a working mom, my kids are taken care of at home by family members. There is never a dull moment at home. My kids are growing up to be very close to their cousins too. Describe your style aesthetic. What are your fashion must-haves? I think I’m a bit adventurous when it comes to fashion, but conservative also in the sense that I don’t wear revealing clothes. I would say that I’m adventurous because I am not scared of wearing bold colors and color combinations. I also like unique designs and frills. My fashion must have would have to be a nice bag. And I really love a good pair of jeans and high-heeled shoes. Tell us more about your beauty regimen. Any favorite products? I don’t wear makeup, except for eyeliner. I make sure that I am always hydrated. I drink a lot of water everyday! I love all sorts of moisturizers, and I don’t stick to one brand. I like to change moisturizers every now and then.

the carnivore’s corner An organic primer The word “organic” is thrown around with much enthusiasm these days. It began with organic fruits and vegetables and more recently, there is the recent addition of “organic beef” being thrown under the microscope by the health conscious. But what exactly is organic beef all about? Based on research, “organic” is a labeling term that tells us that the food has been produced through approved methods that integrate cultural, biological, and mechanical practices that foster cycling of resources, promote ecological balance, and conserve biodiversity. Simply, organic farming bears a strong resemblance to the good old days of traditional farming before technology took over. It’s like going back to basics. To translate that to beef, organic beef promises to be free of chemical additives, which include growth hormones, antibiotics, antimicrobials, and beta-agonists, the latter which is of another category of a growth-promoting drug frequently fed to cattle. The animal should also be born and raised on pastureland that is free of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. Living conditions must accommodate the animal’s natural behaviors. This gives rise to the belief that a happy animal is a healthy animal. The animal should also eat feeds, such as organically grown grasses and grains. The feed cannot contain any animal by-product. Regarding antibiotics, the minute the pastureland-grazing animal contracts a disease and is given antibiotics, its meat has to be sold as conventional beef and no longer organic. The organic truth It is interesting to note that the United States Department of Agriculture’s regulations state that organic livestock must have access to “the outdoors…fresh air, direct sunlight, an opportunity to exercise, and appropriate clean, dry bedding.” You can already imagine that the life of an organic cow and a conventional one that lives in a feedlot are worlds apart. Most conventional beef come from cattle raised on concentrated-animal feeding operations, popularly known as factory farms and referred to as CAFOs. Tens of thousands of these animals are packed like sardines in a

facility, which practice is believed to contribute to their high stress levels. They live in such close quarters that they can hardly move and have hardly any space to lie down. Their normal behavior of grazing cannot therefore be carried out. These do not sound like happy cows. Concern over hormone use has grown considerably over the last decade. To cut costs of production, conventional feedlots give their animals growth hormones as part of their feed regimen in order to make their cattle grow faster, so that they can be slaughtered sooner. A scary study shows that ingesting hormones from meat may affect us adversely because it may lead to hormonal imbalances that may in turn cause cancer. Driven by low cost and high profits, conventional farming tends to use as many means as possible to produce more meat per area, which may lead to compromising the health and sanitation of the animals to be slaughtered for our food. Another sad aspect of these CAFOs is that with so many animals living in tightly confined areas and being fed animal by-products and cheaply grown feed, disease spreads quickly. Basically, healthy but unnaturally confined animals are therefore dosed with preventive antibiotics, which residues the animals absorb and accumulate into their tissue. According to research, increased use of antibiotics can lead to antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria, which can be passed to humans. We unknowingly consume these sources of chemicals and these in turn accumulate in our bodies. Organic cattle do not need antibiotics, preventive or otherwise, because they live in wide open spaces so they are naturally robust and rarely get sick. In turn, no unhealthy elements are introduced into our food supply. As stated earlier, in the event they do get sick and are treated with antibiotics, that animal’s meat will be sold as conventional beef and not organic.

All in all, organic cattle are happy cows living a decent life. They graze peacefully around while chewing on the pasture’s nutrient-rich grass, dining on organically grown grains that aren’t sprayed with synthetic pesticides or other chemicals. It has also been revealed that those that eat grains have more E. Coli bacteria in their intestinal tract and feces, which can contaminate meat with the deadly bacteria during slaughter. Unlike conventionally raised livestock, organic animals are not fed plastic pellets, formulas containing urea or manure, or slaughter by-products, as stated by the USDA. Organic practices prohibit feeding animal parts of any kind to cattle that by nature eat a vegetarian diet. From the fields to our plate Most groceries and health foods now carry organic meats. But note that “organic” isn’t the same as “natural.” Natural is a loose term which generally means that no artificial ingredients were added in meat processing. It has no connection to whether or not the animal was drugged and fed animal by-products. Organic meat goes way beyond artificial ingredients. Knowing that your meat is organic guarantees that the beef went through strict health and safety points before it reached the store. When we buy beef in our supermarkets, we face the choice of purchasing organic beef versus conventional beef. It is comforting to know that when meat is labeled and marketed as organic, it must come from livestock that has lived a happy and healthy life under continues organic management. Though organic beef is slightly more expensive than conventional beef, we can be comforted by the fact that it is healthier to eat because it contains no hormones and antibiotics. A conventionally farmed animal treated with all sorts of drugs can be compared to a healthy person using many drugs, in that the drugs can wear down the natural state of health. And not only is eating meat from sick animals not good for us, it’s not very appetizing either. In terms of nutrient content, organic meat may have the same amount of fat compared to conventional meat but at least we are assured that we are eating meat with fewer 84

impurities. This is worth remembering because children and pregnant and lactating women are more sensitive than others to the chemical residues and possible pathogens found in conventional meats. The dirt Many health consumers are also taking issue with the environmental impact of conventionally raised beef. Remember that cattle from organic farms offer better health benefits with a more sustainable farming approach. Raising organic beef cattle is definitely healthier for the environment too. The biggest concern with conventional beef rearing practices is the concentration of huge amounts of livestock waste produced in a small area. These millions of tons of manure contaminate and pollute the soil, air and nearby water supplies. Also, the CAFOs consume millions of tons of corn that are chemically fertilized, which in turn produce runoff that contaminates large bodies of water and kills large amounts of sea life each year. Grass from organic pastures is treated with manure, thereby eliminating the problem of disposing tons of manure as well as the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Organically raised livestock may also benefit the environment because the grass they feed on prevents soil erosion. With the many scares lately relating to food-related illnesses like Mad Cow Disease, E. Coli, salmonella that come from improper food handling, pesticides, antibiotics, and hormones, instead of avoiding meat altogether, it may be the time for the carnivores to be a little more health conscious and explore the world of organics.

STORY OF A Why did you decide to move to the Philippines after growing up in the US? For one, most of my family reside here in Manila. I thought it would be a good opportunity to bond with them after all this time and see where my roots go back to. And even though I love Florida and the life I had built there, you can get stuck in a place like that and never get out into the world, expanding your knowledge on culture. Which is what I dream of doing. You’re staying with your grandparents, Jack and Sonia Rodriguez (who helped flourish the restaurant industry), here in the Philippines. How is that like?

“Home is where the heart is.” That’s one of the reasons why Katja Rodriguez flew back to Manila from the U.S. As for the others, let’s just say that this up-and-coming model has some ambitions of her own, and you might just see her next on TV, print, and even the city’s hottest events. For now, she sits down with SPARK to talk about how she’s preparing to conquer the industry. Read on to find out more about how this ingénue is enjoying life as a student slash part-time model and host, what she’s looking forward to in the future, and how every single day is a history in the making. How old are you now? I am 19 years old. And I’ll be 20 this August!

It is definitely different. I almost feel like I went a few years back! I had endless freedom in Florida as long as my priorities were always set in order, but now I have to report back to someone at all times, and even accept the occasional “no” to going out. I don’t mind it though, because if I wanted to go out and have fun 24/7, I would have stayed in Orlando and that’s not why I’m here. The rules build structure and character. Can you tell us more about your background? How did you get into modeling? I first started when I was 15, I was tall for my age—5’6”, so I became pretty familiar with the runway. Over the next few years, I grew just an inch more and was no longer the tallest, so I looked into print and ended up having so much fun shooting!

What are the biggest challenges of breaking into the industry? I would have to say making a name for yourself and making it different. There are a lot of pretty girls with the same dream, but if you can’t distinguish yourself from the rest, you’ll blend in. Once you find that spark that separates you from the rest, it gets easier after you embrace it and use it as your secret weapon. Describe your relationship with renowned Filipino designer Bea Valdes, who was on the first cover SPARK? Tita Bea is the partner of my father’s youngest brother, my ninong, Tito Archie. She has been a huge help to me during my transition from the States to Manila. She’s introduced me to my hair stylist, my yoga studio, even my carpool to school! Although she generally has a full busy schedule, I know that if I ever need help with anything, she’ll be able to assist me, which I am very thankful for. How do you manage going to school while pursuing your modeling and hosting activities? Before my very first runway, or photo shoot or event, I was a nerd. Before I am a model or a host or anything, I am a nerd. The phrase, “brains before beauty” definitely applies to me. If I have a shoot on an important test day, I will turn down the shoot. If I can incorporate both, even better! But my education has and always will be my primary concern, because knowledge is the gateway to inspiration, achievement, and success. Most interesting shoot you’ve done? A surf shoot with my best friend over in the States! And in Manila, I would have to say this shoot with SPARK because it was my very first one here, and it gave me a good taste to how things work here. Most memorable event you’ve hosted? Believe it or not, it would be a pep rally [on] my senior year during spirit week because it was amazing how interactive the crowd was, and how responsive and enthusiastic my fellow peers were to the event I hosted. Their reactions opened my eyes to the excitement that is triggered when pumping up an audience, and [it] was the first time I realized that hosting was something I would love to consider!

You enjoy yoga and zumba. What are the other physical activities you do to keep in shape? Aside from yoga daily, I also try to run every day. Running has been a lifestyle to me for almost half my life now. I also gym consistently and try to golf at least once a week. Recently, I have gotten back into surfing and even tried out poi! What are your other interests aside from fashion and modeling? What do you do during your free time? I am very proactive! Yoga, zumba, and classes like so take up a lot of my time, along with the other physical activities. But I am also very family-orientated. I spend a lot of time with them or my friends, bonding and laughing, I’m always laughing. On me time I draw, or practice my violin which are both very addicting hobbies. What’s your daily beauty regimen like? Any favorite products? I have fairly dry and sensitive skin, although Aveeno and Lubriderm have been my best friends for years now! I also love lip gloss. I think I have a proud collection! (Smiles) / / / /

LIGHT Fascinated by the power of the skyscraper, Italian architect, designer, and consultant, Marco Acerbis, designed a one of a kind masterpiece known as “Building” as his last creation for FontanaArte. After six years with three genius artworks, the beautifully structured floor lamp is composed of two curved thermo-formed glass shells, kept together by two vertical aluminum extruded uprights, with a double lighting system: indirect light from above and inside, and fluorescence for ambient light. Acerbis’s famous creations are Vertigo, Polaris, and Building that he expressed as “three different stories within my indoor city.
