RETAIL CLIENT

LOCATION: Ashleigh Signs Ltd. ROLE: Brand Guardian, Lead Signage Designer • Signage rollout for 10 flagship Kiddicare stores. • Worked in conjunction with the Kiddicare team to develop the initial design concept into a striking yet feasible signage solution. • Produced signage design for each specific area of the store, ranging from calm Nursery spaces, to fun and vibrant Toys & Games sections, and community event and Café spaces. • Went on store visits to establish the need for additional and seasonal signage. • Produced artwork for large wall displays and window vinyls. • Developed a consistent theme for Kiddicare materials, and a signage manufacturing manual from a base set of brand guidelines.

MUSEUM EXHIBITION FOR

LOCATION: Leeds Metropolitan University ROLE: Competition Winner, Lead Designer, Workshop Production, Installation • Winner of live project working in conjunction with Abbey House Museum in Kirkstall, Leeds. • Proposed as competition project, where groups had to produce a general theme and design ideas to present to the staff of Abbey House Museum. • The project was to design and build the set and space for the 2010 exhibition ‘Park Life’. An exhibition of the parks of Leeds, and their history. • Carried out the final design amendments & workshop production with just one other student from the team, and the help of the University’s workshop staff. • Placed in charge of every element of the project from graphics, to ordering materials, to workshop duties & constructing and installing the final pieces. • The exhibition was opened on the 23rd of January 2010, after 3 months working on the project, to great feedback from both visitors and staff.

RESTAURANT CHAIN FOR LOCATION: Ashleigh Signs Ltd. ROLE: Brand Guardian, Lead Signage Designer • Project based around conversion of Tesco Cafés into carvery restaurants around the UK. • Was tasked to brand the chain (Originially named ‘OPEN DECKS’) as part of a small team, chosen to be lead designer once a brand style and logo was chosen. • Responsible for initial signage design based around chalkboard & timber style, and the colourful 50s inspired rebrand in late 2014 • Multiple meetings with Tesco and Decks staff to establish a consistent theme for material across the brand. • Produced a signage manual and artwork for all English and Welsh sites.

aglow

LIGHTING DESIGN LOCATION: Leeds Metropolitan University ROLE: Designer, Workshop Production

• ‘Aglow’ was a series of lights designed to create a multisensory experience, allowing the user to manipulate light levels through deeper interactions than standard light units. • Project aims to ‘reinvent’ the mood light, moving away from the coloured LEDs and silicone shells so frequently used, and instead focusing on user connection and involvement. • Using contrasting materials against a clean, wood finish, the units promote interactivity through exploration. • Well received in discussion with children’s special needs companies at New Designers convention as ‘sensory stimulation’ devices.

MODULAR PRODUCT DESIGN LOCATION: Leeds Metropolitan University ROLE: Designer, Workshop Production • ‘Tidy’ was a project tackling the issue of redesigning the ‘desk tidy’. • A modular system was developed so that the solution was personal to the user, and constructed in a building block fashion to add an element of entertainment to a space which may be demotivating. • The user would only have to purchase the units they need, therefore making the whole system more personal to them, especially with the wide range of colours and features available. • The solution focused on verticality, leaving a small footprint on the desk to provide the largest free space possible on the surface itself.

INSTORE IDENTITY FOR LOCATION: Ashleigh Signs Ltd. ROLE: Lead Design Development, Artworker • Working in conjunction with Elmwood design agency in Leeds, Initial meetings were held with staff from Morrisons, Elmwood, and Ashleigh Signs. My role was to take the chosen designs from Elmwood’s initial concept pack and develop them into feasible signage solutions, whilst offering my own ideas to the design development process. • Tasked with deconstructing the flat design ideas and developing them into 3D elements, specifying construction methods and materials. • Editing artwork and setting up for print. • Created guidelines for 3D bulkhead elements and produced a signage manual.

BRAND CREATION LOCATION: Ashleigh Signs Ltd. ROLE: Lead Designer

• Concept was proposed to use old & disused telephone boxes, and retrofit them with a unit that held self-service coffee & ice cream machines. These would then initially be fitted outside pubs, and eventually rolled out to city streets, etc. • I was tasked with producing an identity for this new concept, based around the name ‘RED BOX’, working to create a style that was ‘modern, urban, and recognisable’. • Working through multiple minimalist styles, I eventually settled on the image of the traditional British red telephone box, working in the specific menu items through playful versions of the same design.

PUB RESTAURANT CHAIN LOCATION: Ashleigh Signs Ltd. ROLE: Brand Guardian, Lead Designer • A chain of Stonegate pubs known as ‘Great Traditionals’ was underperforming after the very masculine ‘drinkers pub’ external image, didnt reflect the family-friendly, pub dining environment within. • I was tasked with producing a more neutral external image for the properties, reflecting the food offers and welcoming atmosphere, with potential to draw in a bigger crowd in the evenings and on weekends. • A number of styles were proposed to the client with excellent feedback on all, settling on a bistro-style design scheme with illuminated glass fronted fascias, to have remote control, colour changing lighting for weekend events. • The brand is currently rolling out across the UK after great feedback.

PUB RESTAURANT CHAIN LOCATION: Ashleigh Signs Ltd. ROLE: Lead Design Development

• In 2014 I was tasked with proposing a brand ‘update’ for the pub/restaurant chain ‘Slug & Lettuce’. Below is some examples of the scheme proposed, ranging from logo updates, to working with the existing logo to produce a cleaner, more upmarket feel for existing properties. • This scheme was passed on to a design consultancy as a base for updating the brand throughout all material.

COMMERCIAL CLIENT LOCATION: Freelance ROLE: Lead Designer

• Kbins is a cardboard and plastic storage box manufacturer. I was recently asked to produce some material for their range of products, including animations of the assembly of some of their boxes, 3D renderings for promotional material and labelling, and ideas for a pattern that could be used during printing which would save ink but also represent the box’s purpose.

COMMERCIAL CLIENT LOCATION: Freelance ROLE: Lead Designer • Applejon Associates is a Leeds based property consultancy. Only having a limited number of staff, the company struggled to re-brand after a change of name, As such I was asked to undertake the project. • The result was an attractive, modern style, withh a recognizable logo that would appeal to both the residential and commercial client bases that Applejon caters for.

RETAIL STORE BRANDING LOCATION: Ashleigh Signs Ltd. ROLE: Lead Designer • Privately owned retail store ‘Peters’ of Huddersfield set a brief to create a new identity for their brand, aiming to compete with more well known high street retailers. • Tasked with producing a selection of rebranding ideas for the store ranging from an entire name change, to reworking the existing name. • Created signage scheme based around chosen logo, and developed signage for the newly created ‘Coffee Mill’ café on the property.

EXHIBITION DESIGN & PERSONAL BRANDING LOCATION: Leeds Metropolitan University ROLE: Lead Designer

• In 2011 I attended the ‘New Designers’ convention in London with 11 other students from my course. Along with 2 of these students, I helped design our branding for the convention. • We wanted a clean style, but also an attractive amount of colour. To achieve this we assigned each student a colour which suited their displayed projects, which they would use as accents on their sheets and material. • Earlier designs developed into a project called ‘GRIM (Great Imaginations) up north’. The initial concept of this project was to hold networking events for the growing design industry in the north of England, much like the New Designers convention. • The brand was eventually adopted as an identity for me and fellow graduate in some freelance work after university, but the initial concept is still one I am very passionate about approaching.

RESTAURANT CHAIN LOCATION: Ashleigh Signs Ltd. ROLE: Lead Design Development • Thaikhun’ was a relatively new chain of Thai restaurants. After rolling out a few sites around the UK, I was tasked with creating a more coherent signage package for the brand. • The brief was to strike the ‘Thai Street Food’ message more literally, and really capture the essence of the street food carts and markets of Thailand. • The internals weree installed by another contractor and had a much more ‘bric-a-brac’, Thai Market feel than our external signage. As such I produced a design pack which included banners and flags, stitched-together effect awnings, neon signs with a dilapidated look, corrugated panels and road signs fixed to the fascias.

RESTAURANT CHAIN LOCATION: Ashleigh Signs Ltd. ROLE: Lead Design Development • In early 2014, Harvester approached us with a proposal to update the signage across both formats of the restaurant chain, dubbed ‘suburban’ and ‘retail’. The only detail provided was the new logo (seen above), and a green reference colour. We were told the interior was going to be much more ‘farmhouse’ style, and more family friendly. The brief was to match this new approach. • I was chosen as part of the initial project team to develop the brand to a workable level. Meeting with marketing representatives from Harvester, I developed a scheme of options using traditional shapes and timber finishes to give a rustic barn feel to the exterior. • A brand manual was created from the scheme, and is now being installed across the UK.

MODULAR LIGHTING DESIGN LOCATION: Leeds Metropolitan University ROLE: Designer • ModuLuminaire’ was the solution to a live brief from High Technology Lighting Ltd., whereby a ‘Xicato’ LED had to be incorporated into a table top luminaire. The Xicato had particularly good colour rendering qualities and as such I began to develop a design for a task light for artists and designers. • The resulting lamp was a semi portable unit with docking stations around the workspace. • The concept was to tackle the issue of difficult lighting angles when drawing, etc. It’s size and ergonomic shape also meant it could be held like a torch for intricate creative tasks where a very specific angle of light is needed.

VARIOUS ‘ONE-OFF’ PUBS LOCATION: Ashleigh Signs Ltd. ROLE: Lead Designer

In Closing... A bit more about me.

• As a graduate of the BA (Hons) Design course at Leeds Metropolitan University with first class honours, with experience in the branded design and advertising industry, I have a focus for detail in everything I do. I strive to achieve a level of professionalism through rational and methodical processes, combined with forming excellent communicative relationships with clients to provide them with the best solution.

THE OTHER STUFF

THE WORK STUFF

• Through my acquired knowledge and experience of design I have developed strong problem solving skills and I am able to handle situations with logical thinking. I can apply myself to a broad spectrum of tasks, having approached multiple fields of design in my own work. This is encouraged by my will to ensure every element of a project is unified within a holistic theme and a cohesive brand identity. • My involvement with a project becomes very personal and I feel having input on as many elements as possible ensures the best outcome. Being involved with live projects in my time as a student, and becoming brand guardian and the sole designer for certain brands in my time employed, has developed my determination to provide solutions of the highest possible standard to a client. My ability to handle projects that have strict criteria with ease, means that I can put my mind to use in many situations, and gives the opportunity to be open to new challenges. • My years at University and my time employed as a Signage Designer have given me an opportunity to work in many creative environments and experience many methods of working. This multidisciplinary approach to design allows me to answer many varied briefs. Many of my personal favourite projects relate in some way to manipulating a space to create a better suited environment. This experimentation with spatial design stems from an interest in architecture, interior architecture, and landscape design.

• My interest in design stems from a very young age where a bucket of lego and a couple of cardboard boxes was my design studio, and as such my passion for design spills into my personal life. Influences in the more recent years in my life come from a keen intrest in pop-culture and videogames. These will often culminate as a new style or idea that I like to implement into design work for personal projects. • Occasionally I will create a series of posters or artworks, relating to a specific theme or style, to put up in my office at home. This interest in personal design works keeps me creative, and busy! More often than not I’ve come up with new ideas for another series before I’ve had chance to print the last ones off. • See below for some examples of the stuff I do in my free time:
