ARIEL FLORES URBAN APPROACH These sketches explore passive strategies evolving around the systems needed in place to combat the issue of urban heat. By initiating a framework that can adapt and evolve to fluctuating conditions, its systemic functions can be designed into future architecture. The system proposed consists of three iterations; ‘Alpha Heatsink’, ‘Beta Airspace’ and ‘Omega Hub’ of attempting to address this issue of thermal heat in cities in a plausible approach. Some of these sketches develop these systems within an architectural understanding while balancing elements of structure, functionality and human programme.

JOO LIEW RESIDENTIAL FOCUS The following sketches have a primary focus on the living aspect of the ‘Gamma Capsules’ which are the living spaces that can be embedded within the urban approach. The modules focus on iterations of the VTOL units, communal aspects that are integrated as part of the living areas. The modules’ configurations were defined by several factors that were previously researched to be the fundamental conditions for sustaining human life and activity. These factors include areas for living, resting, victuals storage and washroom functions. Some digital sketches in this section also share a focus with the urban typologies in assistance with working out the framework of how these capsules can be attached within the towers during an emergency.

VTOL iterations. Many concepts were scrapped and few were condensed into parameters relating to what the VTOL (Tower Beta) would serve as. This is revisited later after configuring module typology. 25

How VTOLs would carry living modules (Gamma capsules) into the urban framework. This was also quite early in the development stages. 31

Gamma Capsule typology sketches. The hexagon packing was later scrapped as it proved efficient only for limited space boundaries, which was something Project Eden was not subject to as potentially ‘building in the sky’, of the high altitude, would potentially have Project Eden as an exception to Development Overlays. 35

Scrapped project visualisations. It showed the early deployment units and how these could potentially carry passengers to a suspended area on a second, new vertical ‘ground’ plane.

Tower framework iterations were researched and then explored so as to figure out methods to attach, detach and re-attach gamma capsules to the tower typologies during emergencies.

For this sketch and the following pages in this section, many were done in Rhino + Grasshopper. Please refer to the following sketches with shots of the scripts.

Script done to explore how to maximise surface area exposure of heat sink pipes to the surrounding heat. However this script was also full of errors and was scrapped. The concept of maximum exposure to heat was taken from this but the script was deemed not usable.

EPILOGUE LAST WORD These sketches and iterations, despite majority being scrapped, provided Superseden with insight to optimizing both urban and residential frameworks for a large-scale population and emergency of a heatwave, that could occur in Melbourne year 2077. This book is the third in the series of journals produced and has offered support in the foundations of the project.
