Store Audit Although it was easy to find the product, it was only because I knew where it would probably be and guessed that it would be at the certain section. However in the group of other insecticides, it was a challenge locating on the shelf which one was RAID. It felt like everything just merged together because the style of the packaging and the colors were all simliar. If I did not know the company of RAID at all, I would not know that RAID is a reliable for the insect infestation.

Research / Case Study

Case Study 01: Fire Extinguisher Fire extingiuishers is a good inspiration for Raid because they both have a commonality of precision and the ugency when there is danger. Not only can Raid be inspired by the current form and functionality of the fire extinguishers we have seen but also redesigns that people have come up with recently. The materials and form of the fire extinguishers can be applied similarly to the new brand of Raid.

Case Study 02: Dyson Dyson makes the most mundane everyday products into strong, reliable, compelling masterpieces that becomes the number one at whatever product they make. Although the products look strong and mechanical, men and women are attracted to them. When a person is using a Dyson vacuum, the design and functionality really shows and makes it such a good inspiration for Raid.

Final Logo This is the final version of the logo. Instead of having the usual format of having a symbol on top of the logotype, the symbol was put at the top left corner. The symbol has a negative space shaped as a triangle pointing down which represents my spray that ejects the insecticide vertically downwards. The symbol is also representing the shield which I thought was a big part of the old logo as I want the new brand of RAID to protect the users from insects.

This typeface was debuted on Apr 19, 2005. Kimberley is a technological sans-serif typeface in 7 weights. Color Palette This is the color palette for all the graphics of the packaging. The base color is gray, graphical elements should be the pastel orange and the neon orange is the detailing and highlights of the packaging. The purpose of these colors was to have RAID stand out in both retail and also in the place of your home. Also the palette gives off a feeling of dauntlessness and power which is a big part of the concept of the new brand of RAID.

Primary Form 3 Still making the mistake of focusing on too much of the trapping mechanism, I thought of a way where users can scoop the bug off the surface without having to physically touch them after they kill the insect. However, the downside of this was that it limited the amount of space for the trap compartment so it resulted of not having this detail as you can technically still scoop up the dead insect with out the feature.

67

68

Form Dev. / Primary Form 3

To make the scooping mechanism, carved out a portion of the cylinder leaving the half of the bottom intact.

Primary Form 4 Finally realized that I have been too focused on just the one function and need to create the overall look for the form that goes with my concept. Looked at conceptual fire extinguishers for inspiration. In the end, the form is almost finalized and need minor adjustments.

71

After creating a prism shape, I carved out the bottom for the trapping mechanism.

Primary Form 5 This was the final mockup of my primary form after my fourth round of mockups. Decided to have the trigger be parallel to the angle of the main base and also have the trigger not be so tall. Also, instead of having a smooth dip, decided to have more of a sharp cut to the top. Finally, decided that making this form in 3D printing would make it much easier and more precise.

Bondo, Sand Prime After curing, realized that there was too much chemical applied which made the forms crack. To fix the cracks, bondo was applied and sanded down which filled up the cracks very well. After applying bondo, the forms were sanded down to make surface smooth and applied primer. The steps were repeated until the surface of the forms were completely smooth.

Color Spray After the surface was completely smooth with primer, it was time to spray color on to the forms. The spray was bought from Swain’s. Used gun metal gray for the base and painted the triggers a pastel yellow. After spraying all the forms, they were left to dry for a full day.

83

84

Spraying the color was all done in one coat and was left to dry for 24 hours. The colors matched with the planned color palette.

Bait Box Dieline One of my secondary forms was the ant baits. Decided to make a sliding carton box. For the mockup, used ragboard paper. In the end, realized that the box was too thick and needed to be thinned down and also thought it would connect better with my other forms if the outer box cutline was shaped as a triangle.

Final Graphics The overall graphics were designed very angular and sharp to give the overpowering look and feel. The bright orange was used as highlights and the pastel orange was used for most of the graphic elements.

Final Process / Chromatec

Final Process: Chromatec To apply the graphics on the forms, Chromatec was used which was printed at Dayton West Graphics. Chromatec are rub on transfers that can be applied dry straight on to the form. The color was chosen at the printer by bringing my color samples and comparing them to theirs. I had to be careful to make sure all of the little letters were firmly on to the form before completely peeling them off. This was applied to all of the forms.

Final Process / Custom Bait

Final Process: Custom Baits I decided to make custom baits instead of using the original ones. I first laser cut acrylic pieces and then glue them together with acrylic glue. After, I applied primer and then put on color with Tamiya paint. To apply my color pallete to these baits I had tops be the dark gunmetal gray and the bottom be the bright orange.
