PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

August 2016

Business Outlook

Now What Happens? In May, we recognized the five-year anniversary of the tornado that devastated the south side of Joplin and neighboring Duquesne. It was a time to remember our loss, but also to celebrate how far we have come. A lot of the rebuilding efforts were aimed at showing the world and ourselves what this community could do in five years to recover from the largest natural disaster to ever hit Missouri and the worst tornado in the U.S. in more than 60 years. We have a lot of which to be proud.

Rob O’Brian, President

There was also a lot of discussion in the months leading up to May about how exhausted people were personally from pushing forward as well as the fatigue of donors who opened their hearts and pocketbooks to help fuel the recovery. Both of these were heard across every sector, from social services and faith-based organizations, to education, to government, to business and right on down the line. It seemed appropriate (and needed) that everyone step back and take a well-deserved rest after pushing so hard for five years. And, it seems, everyone did.

But interestingly, the break seems short-lived. It was right after Memorial Day when I was in meeting after meeting with people asking the question: “Now what happens?” In some ways, it was an echo of how discussions on the long-term future of our community began within a few days of the tornado, even as the immediate needs were being addressed. I believe there is an intrinsic desire, maybe even a need, of people here to want to improve this area. It seems there is always the question about what we want and need for our families, our friends and our greater area, AND what we are going to do to address those wants and needs. Just for perspective, here are a few of the initiatives that started in the last year or so prior to the five-year anniversary that are still underway and hold great promise for our area. Top of my list is the KCU Medical School expanding to Joplin. Having a 600-student campus of one of the top 10 medical schools in the U.S. is no small thing. It will positively change medical care in our area. It will bring, thanks to MSSU’s tie to KCU, more students to Joplin for the pre-med courses offered by Southern. Even if some of those students decide they don’t want to be a doctor, there are plenty of options for medical careers they can complete at MSSU and go right into our area medical community. For a one-time $30-million effort to bring KCU here, the community will see up to $100 million in economic impact each year. Then there are the manufacturing projects. Owens Corning will open its new $90-million, 100-plus person facility late this year. This project began in 2014, was announced the summer of 2015 and will be a great addition to our manufacturing sector for years to come. Likewise, Heartland Pet Products, part of Blue Buffalo, has far exceeded its original projection of 130 employees and continues to grow. The firm just announced a nearly $90-million expansion to the existing plan after only two years of operation. This will add an initial 46 jobs to the current 160. And, we had a good win with HS Baking acquiring the former Annie’s facility, putting this nearly 70-year-old bakery back into use. When it opens later this fall, HS Baking plans to add 60 new jobs to our economy and plans to double in size in three years. It is not all rosy; EaglePicher has been downsizing as the new ownership seeks to gain a better competitive edge. It is tough on the employees and their families who have lost their jobs. But, EP continues to work on bringing a newly acquired product line into Joplin and is seeking other acquisitions. If the company makes its goals, it will start growing in 2017 and will see more growth in the following years. Also, Connect2Culture continues to explore the idea of a new performance and visual arts facility in front of and using Memorial Hall. This is a potential $25-million project that could add more vibrancy to downtown and bring more entertainment to our area if the community supports moving forward. And, nuts and bolts, the City is well underway on the millions and millions of dollars worth of infrastructure improvements that will run for the next couple of years. These are all projects fueled by the disaster-recovery money that was approved for the City. It took a long time to get everything in line, but now that the projects are underway, they are supporting growth and providing jobs community wide. So now what happens? What do we want for our community? How do we get there? What should the City, the University, the public schools, the social services, the faith-based organizations, the Chamber and, in fact, everyone, be doing to better themselves but also to enhance the overall economic opportunities and quality of living here? What are your thoughts? I’d like to know. I look forward to hearing from you at rob@joplincc.com or 417.624.4150. 3

Message to the Network from Chairman Brent Baker

Be Your Best Last week I attended a “Move” conference put on by Joplin-based Christ In Youth (CIY). CIY works hard to make sure the students leave the event changed to make a difference in their world. It was great to see the students open up and be genuine and honest. More impressive was the impact it had on me and the awareness of my need to be open and honest with myself. The question I asked myself last week was, “Am I who I am supposed to be?” After a week away, I am refocused and reminded of how I can be my best. Just like the students, being honest, genuine and kind is a big part of being my best. A few days later, I am back at work and the real test begins. I am challenged daily to be my best, as a leader, as an employee and as a father. With the renewed focus gained from my week away, I am more aware of my heart and mind and am determined to be who I am supposed to be. So my question to you is: “Who are you supposed to be?” Possibly you know the answer to that. If not, you are not alone. Either way, the daily grind can distract us from

Is Your Business Ready for the Overtime Rule Changes?

6

Changes to the Fair Labor Standards Act are currently set to take place December 1. The most prominent part of the bill stipulates that the minimum salary an employee must earn to be considered exempt from FLSA overtime rules is now $47,476 (up from $23,660). Please see the quick tips below to see what you should be working on to prepare for this change. And for all the details, go to www.dol.gov/featured/overtime. 1. Identify all of your salaried employees and their pay rates. 2. If raising their salary is not feasible, moving them to an equal hourly rate will be necessary. 3. Consider a timekeeping solution to track hours. 4. Increased time management may be necessary. 5. Make sure to pay anyone who works over 40 hours in a work week at the overtime rate. 6. Check your state laws in comparison to these new rules. You must follow whatever law benefits the employee more. While our office does not offer legal or HR advice, we have tools for our clients to help navigate these changes. Please contact our office with questions. Who Is Your Target Market?

By Karen Bradshaw, Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship at Missouri Southern State University

“The aim of marketing is to know and understand the customer so well the product or service fits him and sells itself.” -- Peter Drucker Some businesses believe “everyone” wants to buy their products and services. This usually is not the case. Whether your company sells to consumers or other businesses, it’s crucial to your company’s success that you have a thorough understanding of your primary customers (i.e. your target market). If you don’t know who your customers are, how will you be able to determine if you are meeting their needs? You need to understand what problems your company can solve for customers. In order to successfully satisfy your customer’s needs and to communicate with them using various marketing tools, you need to know who they are and what, when, how and why they will purchase your products or services. Targeting your market is the process of defining who your best customers will be. The market should be measurable, sufficiently large and reachable. Your promotional budget will be much more cost effective if you create a highly focused marketing strategy that will directly meet the needs and desires of specific customers. The 80/20 rule states that 80 percent of your sales will come from 20 percent of your customers. Direct your marketing program to this group of people. Market segmentation is the process of breaking down a larger target market into smaller segments with specific characteristics. Consumers may be segmented on the basis of geographic (i.e. local, regional or national); demographic (i.e. age, gender, income level, family size, occupation, education level or marital status); psychographic (i.e. attitudes and beliefs such as lifestyle, hobbies, status seeking, environmentally conscious or family oriented); and

August 2016

Business Outlook

behaviorist or buying characteristics (i.e. preferred brands, loyalty, price, frequency of purchases and timing of purchases). Business markets may be segmented by geographic area, type of industry, number of employees, sales revenue, etc. By developing a profile of your target market, you can research information about them and develop a profile that can be used to design your promotional strategy. For example, a men’s clothing store might define its target market as men between the ages of 25 and 49 who live within a 15-minute drive time of downtown Joplin. By researching your target market using a database like ESRI - ArcGIS Business Analyst Online, you can determine that although there are 91,556 people living within a 15-minute drive time of downtown Joplin, only 13,956 of these people are men between the ages of 25 and 49. The average median age of men living in this area is 35.4 years old. People living within a 15-minute drive time of downtown Joplin have a median household income of $39,233, and spend an average of $1,434 per household per year on apparel and services. About 47 percent of adults bought men’s clothing within the last 12 months. The company realizes that not all of these men will be their customers. They need to determine the most cost-effective way to communicate with this target market (i.e. radio, Facebook, Twitter, email, newspaper coupons, etc.). You can conduct informational interviews with your customers who fit your target market description via personal interview, blogs or email to determine their personal interests such as media sources they listen to or read, use of email, social media, internet shopping sites, hobbies, interests, etc. This should help you develop your marketing strategy to communicate with your target market most effectively. After you have a clear customer profile, you must learn to think like your target market customers to anticipate their needs. You must track the trends and preferences of this group regularly by staying in constant contact with them and altering your products and services accordingly. Continue to stay in touch with changing preferences by informal face-to-face discussions, in-store surveys, directmailings and feedback requests on your website, in your store, etc. Consumer attitudes will continue to change. In order for you to be profitable, you must stay in touch with your customers.
