BUSINESS OUTLOOK

Our community is facing a health crisis. Joplin has the dubious distinction of “least healthy community” in Missouri. Compared to both state and national averages, Joplin has more obesity, heart disease, diabetes, substance abuse, teen pregnancy, and mental health issues. Our unhealthy workforce is a competitive disadvantage for Joplin businesses. Insurance premiums are higher, productivity is lower, and an unhealthy Joplin makes it harder to attract and maintain talent as young professionals pour into communities that value health, wellness, and active lifestyles. This is a call-to-action. The JACC Community Health & Wellness work group is collaborating with One Joplin to educate and activate the Joplin business community into a coordinated effort to make Joplin healthier in a significant, sustainable way. You can join this work group at http://joplincc.com/workgroups. Also, we encourage employers to establish a workplace wellness program that encourages physical activity and offers better nutritional options, stopsmoking resources, and mental health education. The Work@Health Certification Program, discussed in this Chamber Newsletter issue, provides employers with professional training, needs assessments, and the sharing of best practices. Together, we can make a healthier Joplin.

Missouri Business Community Applauds Gov. Parson Signing Senate Bill 68 into Law On July 10, Gov. Mike Parson signed Senate Bill 68 into law, a piece of legislation that will bolster Missouri’s economic development and workforce programs. Senate Bill 68 was sponsored by Sen. Lincoln Hough, a Republican from Springfield. The provisions in the bill were recommendations of the Missouri Chamber Foundation’s Workforce2030 Report released in 2018, and the Missouri Chamber’s 2019 Legislative Agenda. The Missouri Chamber advocated strongly for the bill’s passage during the legislative session, resulting in a fourfold win for our state’s employers and employees. “Senate Bill 68 is a bold vision addressing two of the biggest issues facing our state’s entire business community: workforce preparation and economic competitiveness. This law will benefit employers of all sizes in Missouri — from empowering thousands of Missourians to equip themselves with in-demand skills, to giving job creators better access to critical workforce resources, to boosting the effectiveness of our state’s economic development tools,” said Daniel P. Mehan, president and CEO of the Missouri Chamber. “Missouri owes a tremendous amount of gratitude to the strong leadership of Gov. Parson, Sen. Hough and the many legislators who supported this bill and fought for its passage.” THE NEWLY SIGNED LEGISLATION WILL: n Create Missouri Fast Track, a program to address gaps in our workforce by providing financial aid for adult learners pursuing education and training for high demand industries. According to the Missouri Department of Higher Education, this program will impact an estimated 17,000 students. n Establish Missouri One Start to streamline, simplify and improve the state’s workforce training programs. The Workforce2030 Report included this telling quote from an employer in the state: “I know there must be lots of workforce programs, but we have never used them. Nobody has the time to figure them all out. I wouldn’t even know where to start.” This law addresses that, giving Missouri’s job training programs increased flexibility and making them easier for employers to use. The funding for the programs will be performance-based, contains new claw back provisions to protect taxpayers and will ensure more funding goes directly into job training. n Create a deal closing fund to give Missouri a key negotiating tool to finalize business investments — essential to our state’s ability to compete for important economic opportunities now and in the future. n Launch new automotive economic development tools to help retain automotive jobs by granting $5 million in tax credits annually to automotive manufacturers that invest $500 million or more in plant upgrades and agree to retain current workers.

DED awards $500,000 to assist Missouri small businesses The Missouri Department of Economic Development (DED) approved seven Missouri small business incubators for a total of $500,000 in tax credits under the Small Business Incubator program. Each year, the program helps generate private funds to establish a protective facility-based or virtual environment (incubator) and provide small businesses with support and resources to operate. This type of working environment fosters growth and development during a business’s early stages. “Building a strong network for startups and small businesses is essential to economic development,” Missouri Department of Economic Development Director Rob Dixon said. “We’re proud to support so many incubators through this program and appreciate all the work they do to drive entrepreneurship in Missouri.” Since the inception of the program, 23 Missouri incubators have been certified. Sponsor contributions received by an approved incubator within the calendar year may qualify for tax credits. Decisions are made on a first-come basis until the program’s annual funding limit is reached.

THE FOLLOWING INCUBATORS HAVE BEEN APPROVED FOR 2019: n The eFactory (Springfield) — $100,000 n Center for Emerging Technologies (St. Louis) — $95,000 n MU Life Science Business Incubator (Columbia) — $85,162 n Joseph Newman Business and Technology Innovation Center (Joplin) — $65,074 n Ozarks Small Business Incubator (West Plains) — $55,264 n St. Louis Fashion Fund (St. Louis) — $50,000 n IT Entrepreneur Network (St. Louis) — $49,500 Incubators may use the funds for working capital and other non-operating expenditures that support new business creation. You can see the results by accessing the following link: Forbes website. To compile the lists, Forbes surveyed more than 25,000 U.S. citizens across all 50 states, asking them to name all banks where they have – or previously had – a checking and/or savings account, and rate them regarding overall recommendation and satisfaction. Banks with branches in 15 or more states were excluded. Respondents also were asked to rate their banks in five categories: Trust, Terms & Conditions, Branch Services, Digital Services and Financial Advice. Each category contained a battery of questions. A bank’s total score was based on a formula weighting recommendation, general satisfaction and the scoring of the battery of questions.

9 Tips for Creating Innovative Teams by KAREN BRADSHAW, Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship at Missouri Southern State University

“If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself.” –Henry Ford

AUGUST 2019

BUSINESS OUTLOOK

A study by Deloitte found that over 90 percent of companies believe that redesigning their organizational structure is important. Many are reorganizing into more customer focused firms that use networks of empowered teams. Following are suggestions for creating successful and innovative teams. n MISSION – What is your company mission and how is your team working toward it? What are you trying to accomplish? Are you a work team that will continue to exist? Are you a special project team that will disband after your purpose is met? What value are you supposed to deliver? What is your vision? Clearly define why your team exists and what you are striving to achieve. n COMMITMENT – Team members need to be committed to the team and to the goals the team is trying to attain. Make certain that team members view their work as important. Do the team members believe they will develop their skills and improve their role in the company? n COMMUNICATION – Do members of the team feel free to communicate with each other? Is there a method for team members to receive feedback on their progress toward their goals? Is there a conflict resolution process so that the team will continue to operate effectively? Developing a clear method of effective communication among team members so they can work together is critical to the success of the team. Team members should not feel that there will be retribution for speaking the truth. n DIVERSITY – Studies indicate that diverse teams are better at solving problems, being more creative, and examining facts more thoroughly. Team members with different opinions can challenge each other to innovatively solve problems. n DEPENDABILITY – Being able to trust each member of the team and count on them to do their part is a major focus of successful teams. Useful collaboration is the result of being able to depend on other members of the team to accomplish the desired goals. These individuals also work together and share in the accountability for achieving results. n CULTURE – Each team member needs to fit the culture of the organization in order for the team to be able to work well together. Just having educated people with work experience doesn’t mean they will be able to work together to accomplish their goals. Good teams are made up of people who complement the other members’ skills and work well within their organizational culture. n LEADERSHIP – Does the team have a leader who is experienced in leading the team and resolving conflict? Do the team members have a good relationship with this person and feel comfortable in expressing their opinions in order to meet the goals of the team? n RESOURCES – Does the team have the resources to be able to accomplish the task assigned to them? Do they have reasonable time allotted for the cause? Do they have access to the hardware and software they need? Do they have a budget to understand what their monetary resources are to work with in meeting their mission? n REWARD – Team members need to be able to see some type of benefit for being part of a successful team. This could be in the form of recognition and appreciation by their peers and fellow team members. It could also be a more formal means of monetary compensation or recognition by the company.

“Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.” –Helen Keller

A Shift Toward Livable Streets by KAYLA McCOLLUM

Thank you to our YPN program sponsor…

2018-2019 YPN EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE Jennifer Little Chairman

Dale Clark

Co-Chairman

The school year is upon us, initiating the season of late alarms, rushed mornings, and school drop off lines. Whether you attend one of the local colleges or parent children attending any of the area schools, the Trails & Connectivity Livability Work Group asks that you slow your morning routine and build in time to walk or bike to school. Does a change to your morning routine seem daunting? Walk or bicycle home. After school, walk the Frisco Trail or check in on the Mohaska Trail later this fall as the day temperatures are lowering. Consider pulling out your old bicycle from behind a stack of boxes in your garage or dusting off the tennis shoes you purchased with the gym membership you don’t have time to use. Hold your child’s hand or walk alongside your teen and talk. Walking and talking is a great way to not only support physical health, but mental health as well. We could all benefit from slowing down and using the principles of self-care with fresh air, exercise, and connection to others which is so incredibly valuable, and popular, right now.

HOW TO BE SAFE Concerns for safety, especially during morning or evening traffic hours, are warranted. Research shows there is safety in numbers. Motorists are more likely to be cautious and slow down when there is an increased number of bicyclists and walkers, according to research completed by P L Jacobsen in 2004, located in BMJ Journals. However, there are things walkers and bicyclists can do. Taken from the Michigan.gov website regarding Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety are some ways to keep you and your family safe when walking or riding bicycles: PEDESTRIANS: n Walk on the side of the road as far to the left as possible against oncoming traffic when there are no sidewalks. n Cross the street at an intersection or designated crosswalk when possible and always stop and check left and right when crossing any street at all. n If a car is parked along a street, stop before crossing to ensure visibility to oncoming traffic. n Make eye contact when possible with drivers before crossing in front of them n Do not assume that because you see them that they see you. n Always check for turning vehicles or those in reverse. n If walking at night, use a flashlight and wear light-colored or reflective clothing. BICYCLISTS: n Always ride with other traffic and obey the rules of the road as any other vehicle operator, including signs, markings, and signals. Use hand signals when stopping and turning. n Wear protective gear like a helmet and reflective clothing, especially at night.

BUSINESS OUTLOOK n Stay as far to the right as practical when in traffic lanes. n Always look both ways before entering a roadway. n Ride predictably and defensively. Avoid distractions and stay with the flow of traffic. n Yield to pedestrians.

HEALTH It’s no secret exercise is healthy for the body, but walking alone is considered a weight-bearing exercise which increases cardiovascular health, reducing the likelihood of heart-related diseases. Walking also increases balance and coordination and supports mental health by improving sleep, self-perception, and cognitive function. Locally, organizations like the Joplin Health Department, OneJoplin, and the Downtown Joplin Design Committee are developing a community support network to increase neighborhood walking initiatives. With plans to create downtown signage and neighborhood walking programs, individuals will be motivated and guided to walk, benefiting their own health and contributing to the connectivity of the region. The answer to establishing walkable streets is developing ways in which pedestrians, bicycles, and motor vehicles can use spaces cohesively. Joplin and surrounding areas are experiencing a growth of development. New businesses are arriving in the area, from vineyards and breweries to healthy food options, coffee shops, and expanding educational institutions. When we slow our pace and encourage and advocate for walking and bicycling, we create a safer community. We become more community-driven in our access to local businesses and walk-up events, and we become healthier as well.
