Casey’s General Stores, Inc. (Nasdaq symbol CASY) announced last month that it plans to build a new, state-of-theart warehouse, logistics and distribution facility in Joplin. The economic impact to our community will be significant: $50 million in capital investment and 125 new jobs with average wages and benefits projected to be over $51,000/year! Casey’s General Stores is a fastgrowing Fortune 500 company operating over 2,100 convenience stores in 16 states. The Joplin distribution center will serve approximately 600 of the company’s stores. This was a very competitive process. Joplin competed against other sites in Missouri and in bordering states. Ultimately, the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce, MOKAN Partnership (f.k.a. Joplin Regional Partnership), City of Joplin, Missouri Department of Economic Development, Liberty Utilities, Missouri American Water, Spire, and Missouri Partnership all worked together to bring Casey’s newest facility to Missouri. The Joplin Chamber’s roles included identifying suitable sites, submitting such sites to the company, presenting a package of local incentives, and managing the company’s visits. Your continued Chamber support makes these business attraction efforts and results possible. I want to thank our membership for this team win. And thank you, Casey’s, for choosing Joplin!

Governor Parson Announces Missouri One Start Will Train More Than 42,000 Workers Statewide Governor Mike Parson announced the award of more than $7.8 million to 226 projects across Missouri for customized training assistance through the Department of Economic Development’s Missouri One Start program. “No matter where you go, from Hayti to Maryville or Neosho to Hannibal, businesses need workers with the skills to get the job done,” Governor Parson said. “Helping employers train new and existing workers helps them stay competitive, and that means growth for the business and for our state’s economy.” “Finding workers is the number one challenge facing businesses and economic developers today,” Missouri Department of Economic Development Director Rob Dixon said. “Efforts like Missouri One Start are going to unlock Missouri’s economic potential and set us apart from other states vying to attract new businesses or looking to lure our employers away from Missouri.” The Missouri One Start customized training program provides eligible companies with resources to train or upskill their employees according to specific workforce needs. Flexibility within the program allows companies to choose how the training is provided. “Missouri One Start is the state’s leader in tailored workforce recruitment and customized training solutions – dedicated to helping businesses grow,” Missouri One Start Director Kristie Davis said. “Missouri One Start is a comprehensive workforce program that ensures businesses have the right workforce, with the right skillset, at the right time.” Missouri One Start is one of the key workforce development initiatives included in Senate Bill 68, which was signed into law in July. For a full list of companies that will receive training assistance, click here. About Missouri One Start: As the state’s premier workforce development program, Missouri One Start helps Missouri businesses stay competitive by providing resources to train and upskill their new and existing employees. As a division within the Department of Economic Development, it serves Missouri companies, from small to large, in creating and maintaining their workforce. Businesses must meet eligibility standards to be considered for the program. To learn more about Missouri One Start, visit missourionestart.com.

Trail System continues growth with Mohaska and St. John’s Trails Connectivity continues to build as trail enthusiasts gathered Friday, November 1 during the opening of the City’s two newest trails near popular parks in southwest Joplin. The public came out for the official ribbon cutting with the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce to celebrate the completion of the Mohaska Trail and eagerly await the finish of the St. John’s Trail. Construction on a large retaining wall of the St. John’s Trail has been slightly delayed due to wet weather conditions. The event brought many together to enjoy a walk on the Mohaska Trail while visiting with other citizens and some businesses who are active in walking, cycling, and running in this area. Joplin Mayor Gary Shaw presented a Proclamation to the community of trail enthusiasts, noting that their commitment to healthy living and accessibility for all residents makes Joplin a better place. “The City is always proud to bring projects to completion that are a part of the long-term vision of our citizens,” said Shaw. “Connecting our community with trails provides an alternative to motor vehicles and offers recreational opportunities as well, making them a great asset for Joplin.” Mohaska Trail begins near Mercy Park and winds through neighborhoods to the east before connecting with 26th (Gabby Street) and Main where citizens can access both the Midtown and Southtown mixed use districts and safely cross and continue toward Garvin Park at 28th and Virginia Avenue. It is approximately 1.15 miles long. St. John’s Trail is a one-

half mile trail heading south. It will connect with the future Tin Cup Trail. Funding for the Mohaska Trail was through the Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program awarded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) following the 2011 disaster. St. John’s Trail was funded through the Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) through Missouri Department of Transportation, Joplin Parks and Stormwater sales tax revenues and CDBG-DR funding. “The Mohaska Trail provides a safer place for residents to get outdoors and enjoy an active lifestyle that promotes and encourages better health and wellness and a means for the community to connect,” said HUD Regional Administrator Jason Mohr. “The City has a comprehensive trail plan,” said Troy Bolander, Director of Planning, Community Development and Neighborhood Services. “Through our partnership with Joplin Area Transportation Study Organization (JATSO), the vision is to connect southwest Missouri through a series of trails so residents can easily commute by foot or bicycle throughout Joplin and to surrounding cities such as Carl Junction, Webb City and even Carthage. Mohaska and St. John’s Trails are a great addition to this system,” Members of JATSO updated the Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation Plan in 2018 after talking with numerous stakeholders and hosting several public meetings. Many citizens participated, offering input and comments to current and future needs for nonmotorized transportation options in the area. It can be found at https://www.joplinmo.org/bikepedplan. Providing off-road transportation options within a community gives citizens of all ages a choice on how they move through the community, while accommodating their safety. The City appreciates the citizens’ engagement and the efforts of all involved in JATSO’s work to ensure that projects, such as trails, focus on the region’s core initiatives of safety and connectivity within the overall plan. 7

We have developed new co-working spaces in the newly renovated Newman Innovation Center (NIC) and in the Advanced Training & Technology Center (ATTC). Starting at only $125 per month per desk, our co-working spaces are ideal for entrepreneurs, freelancers, and remote workers seeking community, collaboration, and learning. Co-working tenants get a desk in a shared, communal setting, with amenities such as free Internet access, JACC membership, and access to free educational programs, mentorships, and e-commerce meet-ups. The Chamber’s new Mentorship Program is now open to entrepreneurs seeking mentors. Topics for discussion include professional growth, leadership development, time management, and how to leverage technologies. The Chamber launched an educational series called EdTalks, covering online marketing and sales technologies. In July, we taught local retailers and e-retailers how to leverage the Amazon Marketplace to sell products on Amazon.com. In August, we taught how to efficiently advertise on Facebook and Instagram. In September, we covered omni-channel retailing best practices. In May, we launched a monthly e-commerce meet-up so local businesses selling products online can share best practices and network with one another. As it turns out, there is a large, growing number of local businesses selling products online. The Chamber, along with a group of business and community leaders, is on the verge of launching a 1 Million Cups chapter in Joplin to educate, engage, and inspire our entrepreneurs. 1 Million Cups (1MC) is based on the notion that great ideas are discussed over a million cups of coffee. 1MC is not a pitch platform, nor is it a networking event. It’s simply a chance for one to two presenting entrepreneurs to tap into the knowledge and experience of the local community in a focused and encouraging environment. Soon, the Chamber will co-launch an “Innovation District” in collaboration with the Downtown Joplin Alliance, Missouri Southern State University, and the Small Business Development Center to cross promote and provide workspaces, educational programs, pitch competitions, mentorships, and networking opportunities. Joplin is already an amazing place to start a business. Collectively, these new initiatives activate and organize our supportive business community to better serve and champion each other.

BUSINESS OUTLOOK

–Debbie Fields, Mrs. Fields Bakeries

Owning your own business can provide a greater degree of flexibility to balance work and life responsibilities, as well as the ability to be your own boss. Women can have opportunities to feel they are making a difference by providing a high level of service to their customers, as well as benefiting the communities where they operate. According to the 2019 State of Women-Owned Businesses Report, commissioned by American Express, women-owned businesses represent 42% of all U.S. businesses (nearly 13 million). They employ 9.4 million workers and generate revenue of $1.9 trillion in revenue. They started an average of 1,817 new businesses per day in the U.S. between 2018 and 2019. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s report, 2012 Survey of Business Owners, 33 percent of women have a bachelor’s degree or higher, control 51 percent (or $14 trillion) of U.S. personal wealth, and are the main source of income in over 40 percent of U.S. households. Women entrepreneurs have grown at a faster pace than men have in the U.S. In 2012, women owned 33 percent (162,616 firms) in Missouri, 32.3 percent (77,194 firms) in Kansas, 37.6 percent (105,100 firms) in Oklahoma, and 32.7 percent (75,962 firms) in Arkansas. Women-owned firms primarily operate in the health care and social assistance industries, retail trade, and in the professional, scientific and technical services. For example, women own 89 percent of child day care services, 81 percent of home health care services, and 74 percent of personal care services. Women business owners experience many challenges in running businesses. Women often face time management issues when dealing with their growing business and their home and family responsibilities. Women entrepreneurs may lack managerial and business experience about the daily operations of a firm. Many women have technical knowledge in their field, but lack knowledge of management techniques. Another obstacle facing women entrepreneurs is obtaining financing to start or expand their businesses. According to the Center for Women’s Business Research, about 57 percent of funding for startup women-owned firms is from personal savings and the investment of friends and family. A challenge faced by many women entrepreneurs is their inability to successfully network. Networking in the business world allows business owners to attract prospective customers, additional suppliers, and potential employees. Consider the following suggestions for improving your chances of success. Research and plan. Whether you are considering starting a business, or if you have an existing business, take the time to write a business plan. Planning can actually help you save time because you will then have a clear focus and steps to reach your goals. Keep researching your industry, new opportunities, your customers, and your competitors. Be Curious. Innovation is important for future growth. Future revenues will come from new products and new services. Network with other business professionals. Consider joining and participating in the programs and committees at your local Chamber of Commerce, civic organizations and trade associations. This is a good way to meet other business professionals who may be able to give you key advice about operating your business or refer customers to your business. Find noncompetitors in your industry that may be sources of advice and mentors. Educate yourself and your employees. If you are lacking in your knowledge of the entrepreneurial areas of business planning, management, marketing, finance, or accounting, take some classes or workshops. Consider your future financing needs. Maintain good financial records. Do monthly financial statements and analyze them to know about your profitability. If you are having credit problems, work to pay down your debt and improve your credit score. Plan for growth and don’t overextend yourself financially. Focus on your strengths. Delegate or hire someone else to do anything that you’re not exceptionally skilled at, and focus at least 80 percent of your time using your key talents that earn you income. This may mean finding people who are experts in the areas of marketing, finance, accounting, or information technology. Learn how to take time for yourself and your family. 19
