BUSINESS OUTLOOK FEBRUARY 2020

ENGAGING THE HARD-TO-COUNT —

How Businesses Can Help the 2020 Census With March just around the corner, the 2020 Census is approaching quickly. As the country prepares for the decennial count of everyone living in the United States, local and national efforts are underway to ensure that everyone is counted, especially those classified as hard-to-count. The Census Bureau predicts that in some areas of Joplin, more than 20% of the population may not participate in the census. Hard-to-count individuals in our communities include veterans, low-income households, renters, people of color, senior citizens, young children, persons with disabilities, and college students. These hard-to-count populations are less likely to complete their census form, which can result in a lack of support for our state. We stand to lose $1,300 for each uncounted individual, meaning that Missouri misses out on crucial funding for our community outreach programs and facilities. An undercount means that Joplin alone could miss out on a staggering $22 million a year. With important resources, programs, and projects at stake, it is imperative that our community is fully counted during the 2020 Census. And business leaders are in a unique position to help ensure that everyone in our area completes the census. Fortune 500 Companies like Microsoft, Valero Energy, and Univision have already made efforts to engage customers and employees, but local businesses can also find small ways to build awareness and encourage others to complete their census questionnaire: n Include information about the census in your business’s weekly emails and newsletters. n Contact One Joplin about promotional flyers for your breakrooms and front windows. n Create a message to go on your business’s marquee or front sign. n Use social media to remind customers of important census deadlines. n Consider a temporary job as a census taker by visiting www.2020census.gov/jobs. n Support local efforts, like the Joplin Complete Count Committee (JCCC), by volunteering. “Businesses have always led the way in Joplin,” says Julie Larson, Vice President – Head of Treats at Hampshire Pet Products and Joplin Chamber board member. “Our community depends on census funding, so it is essential to have our local businesses help make sure that everyone is counted.” If our business community comes together to help with census efforts, we can actively avoid an undercount, engage hardto-count populations, and ensure that Joplin receives the funding it needs for roads, schools, hospitals and so much more. To learn more about the census and how you can get involved, contact One Joplin at 417.499.9529 or the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce at 417.624.4150.

Goal Setting for Success by Kenneth Surbrugg, Director of Entrepreneurship at Missouri Southern State University and Business Consultant with the Missouri Small Business Development Center at MSSU

FEBRUARY 2020

BUSINESS OUTLOOK

When was the last time you wrote goals for your business? Do you have a clear vision for your company? As Yogi Berra once said, “If you don’t know where you are going, you might wind up someplace else.” Companies often have goals for increasing sales and profits, gaining market share, improving customer satisfaction, and hiring great people. Within the last decade, more companies have begun to set goals that concern being socially or community minded, as well as becoming more environmentally conscious. Consider setting short- and long-term goals. Short-term goals can be achieved within one year. You will want to set long-term goals for the next three to five years. Remember, many business strategies that are implemented may take longer to succeed than were previously planned. For example, it takes the average new small business eighteen months to reach breakeven sales. You may become aware of new ideas for expanding your business as you start setting goals. You will need to commit time to write your goals down and think about how you will achieve them. Your goals will be the starting point for developing a strategic plan that can help your company thrive. You can focus your actions and efforts toward attaining your goals instead of becoming complacent. Establish a system you will use to review your goals periodically to see if you are achieving them. As you make decisions on a daily basis, think about how your actions are helping you to meet your goals. A flexible strategy allows you to follow your plan, making adjustments about what is not working, but always keeping your goals in mind. Measure and track the outcomes of your goals. Good business goals are a component of your business plan. This type of planning helps to reduce your risk of failure and increase your ability to succeed. Effectively communicating your goals and business strategy to your employees is essential. To be able to implement a plan and achieve your goals, employees must understand them and believe they are achievable. The SMART method is a valuable tool for setting goals that are specific, measureable, achievable, relevant, and time-oriented. Specific goals describe exactly what you want to accomplish. When you write detailed goals, you can more clearly visualize them and see how you can achieve them. A specific goal would be to increase profits by 5 percent during 2020. You could then look at what strategies might help you accomplish this goal. Measurable goals help you to quantify your progress. If your goal is to increase your revenue by $75,000 in 2020, you might want to break your annual goal into quarterly monetary goals to monitor your progress. Measure your outcomes to see if you are accomplishing your goals. Achievable goals are those you believe you can actually reach. Your goal should be challenging enough to keep you on track, but not so difficult that you will be discouraged. Can you reduce operating expenses by 15 percent during 2020? What plans would help you reach this goal? Relevant goals work toward your company mission and vision. Your goals need to be relevant to what your company does and what it can accomplish. Your expectations for your company should be high; however, they should also be attainable. If you set a goal to donate $40,000 to your favorite charity, and you only have gross sales of $150,000 a year, your goal may be unrealistic, since you may also have a relevant goal of being profitable in order to stay in business. Time-oriented goals allow you to set deadlines or timeframes in which to accomplish each goal. Open-ended goals encourage you to procrastinate. If your goal is to have a new product line introduced by your company, make certain to indicate by what date you want to accomplish this goal. Use some common sense and think of reasonable goals you can actually achieve. Set goals that help you achieve success, and review your goals on a regular basis. According to Ralph Waldo Emerson, “We aim above the mark to hit the mark.”

Their arrangements have featured award-winning singers from all genres, including Pentatonix’s Kirstin Maldonado. Today, Voctave’s videos have gone viral, receiving a staggering 100 million views on YouTube/Facebook. Pro Musica presents the Horszowski (piano) Trio on Thursday, February 20, 2020, at Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School Auditorium, 3401 Newman Road, Joplin. When the members of the Horszowski Trio (Hor-SHOV- ski) played together for the first time, they immediately felt the spark of a unique connection. Many years of close friendship had created a deep trust between the players, which in turn led to exhilarating expressive freedom. In the four-year period following their debut performance at Rockefeller University in NYC in December 2011, they were booked for almost 200 concerts in the U.S. and tours of Japan and India. They have continued their successful rise in the chamber music world, earning the praise of critics and audiences alike. The concert starts at 7:00 PM and is open to the public at no charge with donations appreciated. The public performance of the Horszowski Trio is sponsored, in part, by Freeman Health System, Leggett & Platt, Inc., the Vivian Leon Fund, and the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency. This helps YPs form professional relationships with one another in a casual setting. In order to make YPN a valuable experience for all, the YPN Connections Work Group needs your help to produce these events. Complete the form here to get involved with the group today.

THE NEW DOVER HILL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

JOPLIN VOTE YES Effort Begins in Support of No Tax Increase April 7 School Bond Question Members of the “Vote Yes: Our Kids, Our Community” Committee kicked off their campaign for the April 7 no tax increase bond election. The committee, made up of a cross-section of parents and community members, voiced their support of the question, citing the need for a structurally sound, equitable facility. “We appreciate the community history of Columbia and West Central, but there are significant structural and educational challenges; a new facility would allow greater safety and security measures and improved and more flexible learning environments,” said David Weaver, Vote Yes Co-Chair. The April 7 no tax increase bond election includes the construction of a new elementary school located at Dover Hill, to replace the aging Columbia and West Central elementary schools, as well as an addition at Kelsey Norman Elementary School. These projects would address safety and security needs, provide equity in learning environments, and do so without a tax increase.

“With the passage of this bond question, we’ll be able to ensure that all Joplin students have a safe, conducive place to learn – without increasing the tax burden on residents. It’s a win-win for our community,” –KELLI PERIGO, Vote Yes Co-Chair

Campaign information can be found on the group’s dedicated facebook page, @VoteYesJoplin.
