Local Centers for Entrepreneurship Getting a Few Facelifts

Not only are we updating programming and business service offerings, but we are also changing the physical aesthetic of our innovation centers to inspire a more creative environment. Over the past year, we have been working hard to transform the atmosphere of the Joseph Newman Innovation Center into an entrepreneur’s dream. From new flooring and paint to the all-important WiFi, we have upgraded this facility to reflect the needs of a changing workforce. Implementation of a co-working space has already catered to the needs of a more flexible niche in remote work, startups, and freelancers. Our staff has also made efforts to make the space more eco-friendly by going completely LED. Now more than ever, this is the best place to start your business!

EVERY ONE COUNTS –

Business Depends on an Accurate Census With the start of a new year and a new decade, Joplin’s business community should be reminded of the upcoming 2020 Census. Once each decade, the United States Census Bureau conducts a count of every adult and child living in the U.S. However, the census is more than just a head count of the population. The count determines many decisions, like the allocation of congressional seats and where to build community facilities such as new schools and senior centers. Additionally, the allotment of more than $675 billion in federal funding is based on census data. Missouri loses an estimated $1,300 for each uncounted individual, resulting in less funding for everything from hospitals and road construction to afterschool programs and lunches for children. This loss can impact the regional business community as our data-driven economy depends heavily on information about the country’s population. Data from the census helps companies understand their customers’ needs and can help them decide where to open new locations or where to hire from. Billions of dollars in federal funding will be invested in the economy through education, workforce development, transportation, and housing. Its distribution is determined by census data and without an accurate count, local and statewide economies might lose their fair share. As a business leader, there are a few ways you can help everyone in our community be counted:

Households will receive census invitations in March which will explain the different methods for completing the form. “Every household will have the option of responding online, by mail, or by phone. Any way is okay,” says Ashley Micklethwaite, Executive Director of One Joplin and Chair of the JCCC. “It’s just important to complete it.” For more information about the census, contact One Joplin at 417.499.9529, the City of Joplin’s Public Information Officer at 417.624.0820, ext. 204, or Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce 417.624.4150.

Creating Your Competitive Advantage by KENNETH SURBRUGG, Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship at Missouri Southern State University

According to W. Edwards Deming, “Profit in business comes from repeat customers; customers that boast about your product and service, and that bring friends with them.” The key to obtaining profit is having a sustainable competitive advantage. A competitive advantage is a unique benefit that your company offers your primary customers (i.e. target markets) that differentiates you from your competitors (i.e. fast service, high client retention, open 24/7, high referral rate, well-trained and knowledgeable employees, innovative technology, etc.). A competitive advantage enables your company to create superior value for its target markets, paving the way for your business to earn higher profits. Ask yourself, who are your best customers and what are you doing to satisfy their needs? Who are your competitors and what are they doing to satisfy customers’ needs? Your strategic plan and the success of your business will depend upon your ability to gather competitive intelligence on a continual basis. Analyzing your competitors and then planning an effective action plan is critical. Remember, it’s all about the customers’ perception of your company and your competitors. Your customers’“perceptions” are “reality” to them. Customers will usually buy from the company they believe will best meet their needs (i.e. selection of products/services, hours of operation, customer service level, convenient location, expert advice, good website and social media presence, etc.). Discover your company’s image in relation to your competitors in the marketplace. This is referred to as your “position” in the marketplace. You will need to carefully analyze your customers’ view of your company and your competitors. During this process, consider what your company does better than your competitors, what the competitors do better than your firm, and what you can do to overcome the competition. Consider using the following steps to analyze your competition:

JANUARY 2020

BUSINESS OUTLOOK

1. Research information about your competitors by using the Internet. Check out their websites to see what type of new or existing products/services they offer, certifications, trade organization endorsements, etc. Read customer comments in industry related blogs. Examine product/service reviews and ratings. 2. Talk to your competitors’ salespeople, distributors, customers, and employees. Look for ways to improve your company. 3. Survey your current and former customers about their opinions of both your company and your competitors. Get your sales force or employees to gather information from customers and prospective customers. Ask your customers to tell you what their best and worst experiences have been in dealing with your company. Ask them what they would like to see changed in your company. 4. Examine your competitors’ advertising and promotional techniques. Watch, listen to, and read your competitors’ advertising messages. 5. Shop your competition. Visit and purchase from their store, website, etc., to better understand their methods of operation, products and services. You need to track the preferences of your target markets regularly by staying in constant contact with them and altering your products/services accordingly. Continue to stay in touch with changing preferences by informal face-to-face discussions, in-store surveys, and feedback requests in your store or on your website. This process of gathering competitive intelligence will enable you to determine the competitive strengths and weaknesses of your company in comparison to your competition. Carefully examine the opinions of current and former customers and refine your company’s competitive advantage and image accordingly. Finally, target new prospects and increase your profitability by advertising your competitive advantage.

George Washington Carver (GWC) is looking ahead to 2020. Their re-designed picnic area, with creek side tables and an accessible trail through the woods, will be completed. This has been a painstakingly long project with a few setbacks, but once it is done it will surely be a great asset to the park and visitors. They are also looking forward to the installation of a new interactive exhibit that connects visitors to the natural world that stoked Carver’s wonder. They will also begin work on re-positioning the rock wall at the Carver Cemetery to its historical appearance. The Comprehensive Interpretive Plan, which many of you contributed to, will be completed, and will chart a course for educational programming and special events at the park for the next decade. GWC will also host a Naturalization Ceremony this spring. This will be the third time that the park has welcomed new citizens to our country, at the birthplace of a great citizen himself.

OUR MEMBERS ANNOUNCE PRESENTED BY…

In May 2019, a resolution by the City of Joplin named 56 blocks in Downtown Joplin the Joplin Arts District (JAD), from B Street to 12th Street and Wall Avenue to Pennsylvania Avenue. A proclamation was made by the mayor in October. After soliciting submissions by local artists and graphic designers, the new logo was revealed in early November. The winning design was created by TW Creates, owned by Trisha Patton Wingebach, a former director of the Downtown Joplin Alliance. The logo design was to represent a movement. In a literal sense, they went for the “pinwheel.” The more you blow into it, the faster it comes back around. Thus, the more they put into the District, the faster it comes back in the form of economic benefits! Their mission is to encourage people of creativity to move to and work in the District and help develop it as a tourist haven! To do this, they are developing a vibrant cultural synergy located in a walkable area full of mom and pop businesses, boutiques, bars and restaurants, art galleries, Artwalk, a green space, and soon the new Harry M. Cornell Arts and Entertainment Complex. Their main goal at the moment is to have signs at B, 12th, and Main Streets and that will put them in fundraising mode. So, now that we are a designation, we must work hard together to become a destination! Won’t you join us? For more information contact 417.438.5931 and see our Facebook page, “Joplin Arts District.” The Boys and Girls Club of Southwest Missouri is ready for an exciting new year in 2020 as they will be breaking ground on their new building and expanding their reach to even more children in the greater Joplin area! Follow them at https://www.facebook.com/BGCSWMO to stay informed. Scott Belden, CBI, a Certified Business Intermediary with Murphy Business & Financial Services, recently earned his Arkansas Real Estate Sales license. He is also licensed in Missouri. Although Belden specializes in selling businesses, possessing a real estate license allows him to bundle the real estate with the business for financing purposes. The current work group assists with the onboarding process of new YPs, partnering with Chamber Livability Work Groups to plan and promote monthly events and create networking opportunities at local venues.
