CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE A MESSAGE FROM THE SEARCH COMMITTEE The last time a search committee assembled to hire a President of the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce was 23 years ago. To call the decision they made a success would be an understatement. Since that time, your Chamber has assisted in bringing more than 5,000 new jobs to the region, established Joplin as a regional hub for commerce and healthcare, and rebuilt the business community of a city devastated by a catastrophic tornado. Imagine how different Joplin would look if the committee 23 years ago had made a different decision… we could have lost out on the 5,000 neighbors, friends and family whose companies now call our corner of the state home. This search committee is comprised of community members who represent various business sectors, organizations, boards and elected offices. We understand that the decision we make will have a great impact on our region. Imagine the neighbors, friends and family that will be added to this community because of this decision over the next 23 years and beyond. We ask for your encouragement and support throughout the process of selecting a new Chamber President. The committee met Friday June 8th and narrowed our choices of an executive search firm that will assist with the process. Stayed tuned for more updates as the process unfolds, and thank you again for your support of your Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce! Please welcome Loni Smith to the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce as the Director of Small Business Incubation . Loni moved to Iowa from Seattle in 2007 and began disaster recovery work after the devastating flood that destroyed much of downtown Cedar Rapids, IA. Loni became involved in recovery in New York after Hurricane Sandy and relocated to Long Island, NY to assist in the buyout and acquisition of storm damaged homes. She assisted hundreds of homeowners in selling their property to the State of New York. Loni moved to Joplin to help the City complete the recovery work from the tornado. Through the City, she became involved in the Advanced Training and Technology Center project with the JACC Foundation and soon transitioned to the Chamber to help administer the grant obligations and turn the facility into a workforce development and public service model for the region. Loni has a loving family, two kids, is glad to be back in the Mid-West, loves DIY projects, music and football.

Creating a Corporate Culture to Reduce Cybersecurity Risks

–YOGI BERRA

The corporate culture of an organization is the shared attitudes and beliefs of the employees and management of the firm. The behaviors your employees exhibit toward customers, investors, fellow employees, as well as the community where they reside, is a reflection of the organization’s corporate culture. You might want to consider the corporate culture of your own organization, and the threats your firm faces from environmental forces. An area of concern for you and your organization is cybersecurity. All companies are impacted by cyber threats. Each day companies are negatively impacted by data loss or corruption. How secure is your organization’s customer, employee, accounting, and proprietary data from security breaches and data loss? In order to reduce the risk that companies face from cyber threats, firms should work to develop an internal culture that encourages risk reduction by training its employees on how to reduce their organization’s threat from cyber-attacks. Following are a few suggestions for creating a corporate culture to mitigate cybersecurity risks. 1. Top management should demonstrate their commitment to improving cybersecurity and reducing the negative impacts of cyber-attacks. They should strive to create a culture of risk management and risk reduction by establishing and implementing a strategic plan that addresses cyber threats. 2. You should integrate cybersecurity strategies into all departments and at all business levels within your firm. These policies and procedures should not just apply to the IT department; they should be implemented in all departments (i.e., human resources, accounting, etc). 3. Your management team should encourage employees in all departments to work together to reduce cybersecurity issues and improve collaboration on successful efforts. You should institute policies and controls about who has access to specific types of data, how long the data is stored, and backup protocols for the data. You need to have a data recovery plan. 4. Continuous improvement in cybersecurity methods is characterized by continuous training of employees. Your employees may not be aware that their actions can expose your company’s proprietary data to criminal actions. Institute an on-going training program for all employees that emphasizes the importance of good cybersecurity policies and reinforces good behaviors. 5. Your organization should provide incentives to employees for successfully reducing cyber risks. You need to encourage your employees to share responsibility and gain the rewards of successfully securing their data and preventing data loss. 6. Proper rules and policies that mandate cybersecurity need to be in place. The amount of data generated by organizations is increasing dramatically and so is the opportunity for accidental disclosure of sensitive data. Wireless transmission of data, employee mobility, and outside vendors create cyber threats. 7. Your management team should realize that securing data is part of securing the future profitability of your company. Following is a program that can assist you with training yourself and your employees about cyber awareness:

To say that my Leadership Joplin experience has been incredible would be a gross understatement. Leading up to my enrollment, I heard several stories from my peers and previous graduates about the personal growth that they experienced and the relationships that were developed as a result of completing this program. With that in mind, the stage was set and the bar was even higher than my expectations. As each session progressed, I immediately felt challenged to grow as a leader and to increase my involvement as a community member. Encounters with passionate business leaders and conversations with local authorities and government officials opened up my understanding to the diversity and complexity that can be found in the city of Joplin. These moments have become essential to my own personal development and they will have a lasting impact on the servant leader that I one day hope to become. For me, Leadership Joplin has been nothing short of extraordinary. Not only has it sharpened my professional skills and expanded my network, but more importantly, it has repurposed the fire inside of me to become a better servant leader at home and in my work place. Cheers to the Next 30 Years! #JoplinRocks

#TrekJOMO

This has been an exciting year for Visit Joplin (formally the Joplin Convention & Visitors Bureau) celebrating 30 years as the official tourism marketing organization for Joplin. The organization continues to focus on inspiring travelers to choose Joplin for a break from their everyday. In the last 30 years the tourism industry has evolved with more tools to measure the success and the positive impact tourism has on a community. Earlier this year Joplin City Council was presented with the results of an Independent Tourism Study completed by Design Workshop, funded by Visit Joplin. This investment has provided the City with a long-term road map as a tool to help increase tourism for our community in the coming years. Visit Joplin staff strive to keep our visitors up to date with new and existing attractions and events through the www.visitjoplinmo.com website or in the Official Joplin Visitor Guide. The newest edition of the visitor guide will be out by the end of July 2018, featuring a new look and updated information. We encourage residents in the Greater Joplin Area to use the visitor guide as a resource to find things to do when they have family and friends visiting. Area employers have found the guide to serve as a great tool for recruiting new employees or students. Another resource employed is the Joplin History Guide. Many of our visitors enjoy learning about Joplin’s history dating back to our community’s mining boomtown days. The updated version hit shelves earlier this year telling the story of the city’s historic buildings, industry, famous residents and events. Copies can be picked up at the Joplin History & Mineral Museum, Post Art Library or Visit Joplin’s Office located in City Hall on the first floor. The tourism industry serves as the second largest industry in the state of Missouri behind agriculture. Travel and tourism enhances the quality of life for a local community by providing jobs, bringing in tax dollars for improvement of services and infrastructure, and attracting facilities like restaurants, shops, festivals, and cultural and sporting venues that cater to both visitors and locals. Joplin sees its fair share from the industry supporting 5,259 jobs in Jasper County and 2,111 jobs in Newton County. We attract more than 700,000 visitors annually in Jasper and Newton Counties, creating a combined revenue of $303 million. Visit Joplin is excited to see what the next 30 years of tourism will bring to our community and to those who choose to travel across the country or the world to experience Joplin’s amenities. Visit Joplin operates and manages funds collected through the City of Joplin Transient Guests Tax, and is supported by a 4% tax on all lodging properties within the City of Joplin tax base. Visit Joplin receives no funding from the City’s general fund.

BUSINESS OUTLOOK JULY 2018 14

BUSINESS OUTLOOK I participated in Leadership Joplin, Class of 2015 (Best Class Ever!). At the beginning of this program I was introduced to a book titled Monday Morning Leadership by David Cottrell. As a class we were going to read and discuss the concepts that this\book offered while we were participating in Leadership Joplin. And now I must apologize to my class, as I never opened this book. Then about a year later, at a First Friday Coffee, a Chamber Member was talking about this book that they had been reading and how it is available in the Chamber’s Business Library. He said I should go check it out and give it a read. He spoke of how it was a very easy read and how it would not take much time to complete it. It was Monday Morning Leadership. I again passed on the opportunity to put this book in my hands. Then about a week ago I was attending my mentor group and Gary Duncan put a copy of Monday Morning Leadership in my hands. I had a good laugh about how this book keeps showing up. So, after the third time this book has come to me I have decided to read it. Monday Morning Leadership was written for the purpose to convey lessons that the fictional Jeff Walters learned when he felt like nothing in his life was going correctly. He had been a successful manager of a Fortune 500 company and he was in a slump with serious doubts about his leadership abilities. As his doubts overwhelmed his confidence which was impacting his professional and personal life. He reached out to one of his father’s friends who he had not spoken to for several years, Tony Pearce. Tony was an individual sought after by many corporate executives for his leadership training, he was a “turnaround specialist” before his retirement. After a brief conversation between Tony and Jeff, Tony said he would be honored to work with him. The first Chapter was titled Drivers and Passengers. In this chapter Tony gives the analogy of how the responsibilities are different for individuals in a vehicle. Passengers are freer in the vehicle and can do a lot of things the driver cannot. Tony states “As a driver, your focus needs to be on the road and not on the distractions. As a driver, you no longer have the right to ‘mess around’ – like listening to loud music – even though it seems okay to do that as a passenger.” He goes on to tell us that this principal applies when you become a leader, in that you lose some of your freedoms that you enjoyed as a passenger. You can no longer join in on employee ‘pity parties’ and that you lose your right to blame others. You must take responsibility for everything that happens in your department. You can’t blame upper management. In this chapter Tony also establishes ground rules for his meetings. As I read them I realize they are very simple and easy to accomplish, but my next thought was about how often they are followed: 1. Start and finish on time. 2. Tell the truth. 3. Try something different. Keeping these simple rules, I feel, would improve your leadership overall and they do not require any talent to do. They display commitment to the organization, build trust with others, and show you are willing to change if something is not progressing correctly. —Shawn Daniel YPN Chair 2018-2019

Ideas to Help Make Your Work Life Easier

Beyond these common characteristics, you’ll find variety in the look and feel of the most popular tools. Trello Project Management Tool Good for Personal Task Management Trello offers an interesting take on project management by organizing your projects into “cards” that lay out like a deck across your screen. You can click on any card to flip it over and see the details, including tasks, collaborators and due dates. Trello organizes all your projects into boards, allowing both personal and shared boards. Your account lets you have as many boards as you want, and you can manage the permissions for each for everything from read-only access to full privileges. You create lists and deadlines for each board, and you can assign tasks to others. It’s easy to reprioritize and assign list items with a quick click and drag. Trello gets bonus points because it has personality: a sense of playfulness as well as serious business features. You can choose bright, fun backgrounds for your projects, and a “Power-Up” feature (that doesn’t even cost more money) lets your older cards show their age. Plus, the Pirate View is what you need in your life. Asana Favorite Project Management Tool with Robust Free Version Smartsheet Spreadsheet-Based Project Management Tool Many teams report that Asana gives small teams everything they need at no cost for up to 15 users. And although Smartsheet isn’t free, its users adore the fact that the system has templates for almost any type of project, and the layout is the familiar spreadsheet format. Basecamp Classic Project Management System In 2004, a company called 37signals started creating online project management systems, primarily for the web design industry. Basecamp has evolved to be one of the most popular web-based project collaboration tools to share files, meet deadlines, assign tasks, centralize feedback and finish what you start. Basecamp is probably the management services with the most integrations, including social networks, mobile phones and invoicing software. All the systems update each other and keep everyone on track. (Almost) Free Project Management System. Unlimited users. Unlimited projects. Unlimited storage. What’s not to love? Freedcamp gives away much more than many of the other top project management systems in this section. They start charging for integrations with Google Drive, larger file uploads, CRMs, invoices and issue tracking. Podio Customizable Project Management System Podio has the most flexibility when it comes to personalizing a tool to organize your business, but is the most complicated. You can add all kinds of things, such as events, inventory and projects. The set-up process is a little confusing, but if you have the patience, it’s a very powerful business and project management tool. Beth Z Author. Speaker. Nerd. Your Nerdy Best Friend
