Joplin Schools New Workforce Development Programs Joplin Schools is pleased to announce the adoption of several new programs related to student workforce readiness. The programs are intended to prepare students to make a successful transition from graduation to postsecondary employment. These programs focus on specific employment objectives to assist students in their future careers. The first program, Jobs for America’s Graduates, will be offered through Joplin Schools’ new Alternative and Virtual School at the Roi. S Wood campus. The other two programs, Early Childhood Professions and Advanced Manufacturing Technology, will be offered by Franklin Technology Center.

BUSINESS OUTLOOK

JOBS FOR AMERICA’S GRADUATES

The Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) program is designed to help students who experience significant barriers in their lives graduate from high school and make positive transitions to postsecondary education and/or a meaningful career. The program is an elective course that focuses on project-based learning and teaches as many as 81 employment competencies. Joplin Schools partnered with JAG and set goals to achieve a 90% graduation or General Educational Development rate, an 80% placement rate of graduates in work, military or higher education, 60% rate for graduates achieving full-time work, and an 80% rate for graduates either working full time or working while pursuing higher education. The JAG program will be housed at the Roi S. Wood campus, home of the district’s current FLEX program. JAG will be led by Annette Peterson under the supervision of Shelly Tarter. Joplin Schools looks forward to not only working with our local businesses but providing our students even more opportunities for workforce development.

EARLY CHILDHOOD PROFESSIONS

Early Childhood Professions prepares juniors and seniors for employment at entry or advanced level careers with young children. The program is designed for students who wish to pursue a career in early childhood education. There is a great demand to provide high-quality early childhood care and education. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the 10-year job outlook for early childhood providers will grow by 7-10%, which is higher than average for similar jobs. The curriculum for the course is an introduction to methods and materials to assist preschool children in the learning process. It emphasizes the implementation and evaluation of creative learning activities using a variety of methods and materials. The student will also be introduced to nutrition education, menu planning, childhood diseases, illness, and sanitation and safety in group settings. Students will study how to protect the health and safety of young children and promote the development of lifelong health habits. Students will be required to complete clinical hours at area child care facilities including the Early Childhood Center in Joplin. These technical courses represent 250 to 400 hours of classroom instruction and related laboratory experience. Students completing the 2-year program will be eligible for the Child Development Associate (CDA) credential.

ADVANCED MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY

FTC will also add Advanced Manufacturing and Computer Integrated Manufacturing through Project Lead the Way. Advanced Manufacturing Technology prepares students for employment in industries with automated manufacturing processes. The program is built around a set of core courses designed to give students the basic skill set required for this industry and specialty courses allowing students to focus on various related options in the field. This certificate prepares students with a basic skill set that will provide entry-level knowledge of basic electricity, motor controls, and programmable logic controllers (PLC). The PLC classes will provide general and advanced training in programming logic controllers used in the industry to manage multiple automated processes. Students also have the flexibility to learn how to operate a variety of equipment including Fanuc Robotic Arm/Conveyor, Allen Bradley PLC trainers, CNC Router, CNC Mill & Lathe, Manual Mill and Lathe, Virtual Reality Welding Trainers, and other equipment that may be used in various industrial settings. This will include material handling equipment such as tele-handler, forklift, standing forklifts, and other similar machines. Classes will meet five days per week, following the Joplin Schools district schedule. Classes are designed to meet for 3-hour blocks in the morning or afternoon. There is also an option for taking on a flexible schedule due to block programs at their sending high school. Credits will be given based on clock hours in the program in conjunction with how credits are awarded at their home high school for technical and dual credit courses. Students completing two years in the program will be eligible to earn the PLC technician certificate through Crowder College.

NEW FRANKLIN TECHNOLOGY LOCATION FOR 2019-2020

Tips for Strategically Training Employees –Wolfgang von Goethe

Successful companies that provide great customer service, have friendly and competent staff, and offer exceptional product lines believe in the importance of educating and training their employees. Some firms hire managers to run their companies, pay them low wages, do not adequately train them, and then are astonished when their firms are unsuccessful. Many business owners, as well as their employees, have technical expertise in their industry; however, they lack management skills. Small business owners, managers, and employees all need to have good customer service and marketing skills, communication skills, accounting knowledge, and quality control expertise. Even with good hiring practices, methodical interviews and background checks, you still can’t assume the people you hire will have the skills they need to thrive in your firm. In order to have a productive work environment, your company should have a strategic plan in place for continuous professional development for each owner, manager, and employee. The strategies you use to teach employees new skills should encourage employee interaction and boost employee morale. Following are some tips for strategically training employees. 1. Assess the skills needed to effectively operate and grow your company. Are there new regulatory changes or technological changes in your industry? What skills, knowledge, and training will your workers need to continue to do their jobs effectively? Do you have a new employee orientation program? Encourage cross training so that employees learn how to perform each other’s jobs. 2. Periodically examine the skill levels of owners, managers and employees. Do you need to hire someone with some unique expertise to expand your company? How do you want your customers treated? Can your workers utilize new marketing methods like social media? Does your staff know how to maintain high quality control standards? What certifications can your workers obtain that will help to differentiate your company from the competition? 3. Evaluate your workforce training and education options. Can you provide on-the-job training for your staff? Will you need to send them to specialized workshops or certification programs to obtain the latest skills? Examine specialized training sponsored by industry trade associations. Check out distance learning education offered through universities via the Internet. Webinars are useful tools to educate employees. 4. Seek information about government sponsored or employee training reimbursement programs. In Missouri, contact the Missouri Career Center (https://www.mo.gov/work/training/); in Kansas, contact Kansas Works (https://www.kansasworks.com); in Arkansas, contact Arkansas Workforce Centers (https://www.dws.arkansas. gov/); and in Oklahoma, contact Oklahoma Works (https://oklahomaworks.gov/). 5. Evaluate the training programs your company has implemented. Are you providing training in a cost effective manner that enables them to improve their effectiveness on the job, and make your company more profitable? 6. Reward people for utilizing the skills they have learned. Consider setting up a bonus system where your employees are rewarded for improving the profitability of your company. This will help to increase employee loyalty, and keep those well trained people working for your company instead of the competition. 7. Make continuing education a priority. Effective employee training programs keep all staff members up-to-date about current policies, procedures and technology used in their company. Maintain a training budget that will be used to help educate your employees on an on-going basis. As Peter Drucker once said, “Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things.” Strive to be an exceptional leader by inspiring your employees to enjoy a life of continuous improvement. Develop a strategic plan for continuously training your employees to motivate them, and ensure the success and profitability of your firm.

Joplin Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to announce its continued partnership with the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and their Tree Resource Improvement and Maintenance (TRIM) Grant program. This year, the TRIM grant has added $10,000 to the City’s efforts of tree trimming on nearly 800 trees in Landreth, Ewert, Garvin, Mercy, and Schifferdecker Parks, along with Joe Becker Stadium and Joplin Athletic Complex. Pruning young trees allows setting the structure of the tree for the future which reduces future structural problems that may lead to early tree failure, potential safety issues, and removal earlier in the tree’s life than necessary. “With the assistance of the Missouri Department of Conservation, our resources for proper tree care have been extended,” said Jake Cowen with Parks and Recreation. “TRIM has helped us conduct an extensive tree survey to learn more about the health of our tree canopy. Following that work, our focus is now about caring for our greenways. Trimming is an important and necessary step in order to provide a stronger tree canopy in our parks for our community.” Enjoy a refreshing shopping experience at Pink Door Boutique®, where you can find unique health products and stylish accessories, including the latest fashion apparel, Jane Iredale® beauty products, wigs, home décor, awareness items, specialty gifts for mom and baby, greeting cards and more. Fostering inclusion and developing livable streets by KAYLA McCOLLUM

True inclusion means being missed. When you cannot make it to an event or activity, or you’re not seen during a regular trip to the supermarket, it’s noticeable. Connecting to others is the truest way to build a sense of community and inclusion among all citizens. The Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce (JACC) Trails & Connectivity Work Group, while seeking to develop and expand trails and routes physically across our region, is also charged with enhancing connectivity. Connectivity can be a bit more abstract beyond physically connecting trails and rideable/walkable streets. The connection we have to our community is contingent upon interests, but is also largely based on our ability to access our community when needed and to develop those interests. Too often we rely on vehicles and other motorized transportation as our only means of access and this means is not always an option or the ideal form of transportation for many of our citizens. Safe trails, bike routes, and walking routes lead to a system which can be utilized to reach employment, participate in local cultural events, run errands, and to be seen and engaged with neighborhoods and the broader community. One becomes engaged with their surroundings whether walking or riding on the trail or down a street. In this, the nuances of the neighborhood can be recognized, businesses and activities become more familiar to you, and you can connect with others in ways you cannot accomplish sitting in a car with the windows up. When I ride my bicycle down the Frisco Trail and I see the same faces walking their dogs, jogging, or jumping their bicycle down into an off-trail route, the familiarity creates a sense of communion and responsibility for the trail. The Joplin Trails & Connectivity group’s broad vision of a regional network includes a variety of goals from linking our area to surrounding cities to developing safe and accessible trails and paths among homes, businesses, and leisure within our community. Recently, the group volunteered with the Joplin Trails Coalition during their Mother Road Bicycle Tour and will be partnering with Downtown Joplin Alliance for the Joplin Bike Downtown Sidewalk Sale on July 27, 2019. Goals for the group include continued volunteering with area groups sharing a similar mission, educating the region on bicycle safety, accessing funding for development, and assisting in the development of bicycling programs for children. There is more to come as we grow and expand to meet the needs of those in our region to promote inclusion, enhance connectivity, and develop more accessible walkable and rideable paths. And now: A call to action. The Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce has previously managed work groups to develop the personal and professional growth of its Young Professionals. Recently, JACC has shifted the focus of these work groups to the growth of the community, utilizing the Young Professionals Network (YPN) to evoke change in areas we believe will enhance Joplin. With this shift, there is an open call for others to join in our cause. Trails & Connectivity is one of six Livability Work Groups charged with supporting the area in this change; other workgroups are: Cultural Enterprise, Health & Wellness, Diversity & Inclusion, Professional Development, and Gives Back. The groups were developed from identified needs through Chamber conversations with area residents and businesses. These needs include: The health of our citizens, the technological development of our commerce, offerings of leisure, and enhancing our diversity. All Members of the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce and/or employees of Chamber Members can join a work group and we hope to see some new faces soon. We encourage involvement and any insight in how we can better contribute to current initiatives and groups sharing similar goals. To become involved or learn more about the Trails & Connectivity goals or any other Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce Livability Work Group, please contact kaymccollum@gmail.com, co-chair of Trails & Connectivity, or visit Joplincc.com/ workgroups.
