The Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce’s mentorship program recently relaunched with an amazing group of mentors. JACC mentorships are a FREE service to JACC member organizations and their employees. Typically, our mentors meet with their mentees in small group settings at neutral sites (coffee shops, etc.). We offer both professional development mentorships and entrepreneurial mentorships. Our professional development mentors include Aaron Brown, Lori Scott Dreiling, Peggy Fuller, Dr. Tracy Godfrey, Lori Marble, Vicky Mieseler, Dr. Melinda Moss, and Fred Osborn. Our entrepreneurial mentors are Mark Quinn and Travis Chase. Mark is the co-founder of Spink and Co., and his area of expertise is consumer goods marketing and branding. Travis is the co-founder of Fonticons, Inc. d.b.a Font Awesome, and is a Y-Combinator graduate. His areas of expertise are technology and web application/software development. Both Mark and Travis have experience with raising capital and building teams.

Council names Edwards as City Manager On behalf of the Joplin City Council, Mayor Gary Shaw is pleased to announce Joplin native Nick Edwards has been named as Joplin’s City Manager. Edwards comes from Lee’s Summit, MO, where he served in administrative positions for the past nine years. Most recently he served as the Assistant City Manager from 2017 to 2019. Lee’s Summit is a southeast suburb of Kansas City, MO, with a population of nearly 100,000. “Nick has many strengths,” said Shaw. “Having worked in the Kansas City metro area, he has experience with commercial development as well as working with citizens in strategic planning to assist in the growth and quality of life of a vibrant and progressive community.” Edwards holds a Master of Public Administration from Missouri State University and received his bachelor’s degree in political science from Missouri Southern State University. He is a member of the International City Manager Association (ICMA) and served in the United States Marine Corps from 1999 to 2003. He is a native of Joplin and is pleased to be moving back to this city. “During my visit to Joplin I was reminded of the friendliness of the people and their strong work ethic,” said Edwards. “During my tour I saw many examples of how the community came together following the 2011 disaster to make Joplin stronger. It’s a wonderful community and I look forward to joining the City Council and city staff and offering my leadership to move the city forward to its next phase.” City Council members held interviews with Edwards and three other candidates last week. City management staff and Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce representatives spent time with the candidates, and the Council hosted a community “meet-and-greet” for citizens to come and interact with the candidates. Some 80 people participated in the community gathering. “The City Council wants to thank our city staff and community members who participated in our activities Monday as we met and got to know those who have applied to be considered to be our next City Manager,” said Shaw. “We appreciate everyone’s participation in this process. The search for a new City Manager began in March 2019, when the need to fill that position became apparent. At the City Council’s request, the City’s Health Director, Dan Pekarek, was asked to fill the manager’s position until a new manager was selected. Over the past year Mr. Pekarek, with the help of our dedicated city staff, has done an outstanding job of leading Joplin through some needed changes and challenging times, bringing us to today’s announcement.” Edwards’ first day as Joplin City Manager will be March 16, 2020. He and his wife Joleen will be moving to Joplin in upcoming weeks.

Joplin Launches 1 Million Cups to Educate, Connect Local Entrepreneurs Free, weekly program developed by the Kauffman Foundation helps build startup communities nationwide Joplin soon will be the newest home of a national program to engage, educate, and connect local entrepreneurs. Founded by the Kauffman Foundation, 1 Million Cups is based on the notion that entrepreneurs network and discover solutions over a million cups of coffee. The free, weekly gathering helps build startup communities on a grassroots level. Beginning March 25, 2020 entrepreneurs, innovators, funders, and other interested community members are invited to attend each Wednesday from 9 to 10 a.m. at Joplin Public Library, located at 1901 East 20th Street, Joplin, MO 64804. The program’s model is consistent in each city: Every Wednesday morning, two early-stage startups present their companies to an audience of mentors, advisers, and other entrepreneurs. Each founder presents for six minutes, followed by a 20-minute question-and-answer session with the audience. The inaugural 1 Million Cups in Joplin will feature presentations by Renaissance Millennial, which specializes in young adult education, leadership development, team building, coaching, and soft skills training. And SproutFaster, which focuses on the production and distribution of pure worm castings. In each 1 Million Cups city, local entrepreneurs drive the program as community organizers. The 2020 Census is our chance to make sure the hard-earned tax dollars we send to Washington, D.C. make their way back to Missouri. For every adult and every child that is not counted in the Census, our state will lose $1,300 in federal dollars every year. That adds up to $13,000 per person over the next 10 years. When every Missourian is counted, we get our fair share of funding to pave our roads and rebuild bridges. Our health care programs and community health centers get more funding to take care of our family, friends, and neighbors. And our schools get important funding to take care of our kids. Connect2Culture presents The Choir of Man on Tuesday, March 10 at 7:30 pm at Joplin Memorial Hall, 212 West 8th Street. For the Irish, one crucial element of Irish culture has withstood the test of time: The pub. Inspired by an impromptu jam session in an Irish pub, British producer Nic Doodson was inspired to pay tribute to this iconic, Irish fixture and The Choir of Man was born. A runaway hit at numerous international music festivals and featured in some of the most prestigious venues in the UK and US, The Choir of Man is quickly becoming a crowd favorite across the globe – and it’s not hard to see why. This 90-minute, interactive performance features nine ordinary men who sing crowd-pleasing pop hits, rock classics, and traditional pub songs. Now enjoying their 16th year together, the Jupiter String Quartet is a tight-knit ensemble and firmly established as an important voice in the world of chamber music. The quartet has performed in some of the world’s finest halls, including New York City’s Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, and major music festivals. Their chamber music honors and awards include the grand prizes in the Banff International String Quartet Competition and the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. From 20072010, they were in residence at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Two. Since 2012, they have been artists-in-residence at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, where they maintain private studios and direct the chamber music program. The quartet performed the world premiere of “The Sower” in Joplin in 2006. Formed


at Oberlin Conservatory, the Jasper Quartet began pursuing a professional career in 2006 as Rice University’s Graduate Quartet-in-Residence. In 2008, the quartet continued its training with the Tokyo String Quartet as Yale University’s Graduate Quartet-in-Residence and then swept through the competition circuit. The quartet is currently the Professional Quartet in Residence at Temple University’s Center for Gifted Young Musicians and the Founder and Artistic Director of Jasper Chamber Concerts. The Quartet launched their inaugural season of the series in 2016 and continued with the third season in 2018-19. While this is the Jasper Quartet’s first appearance in Joplin, they are uniquely suited to join the Jupiter Quartet to form a string octet for this performance. Survival Tactics for Small Businesses by Kenneth Surbrugg, Director of Entrepreneurship at Missouri Southern State University and Business Consultant with the Missouri Small Business Development Center at MSSU

Whether you are planning to start a business, or you currently own a business, the following points can help you to not only survive, but succeed. 1. Plan. Plan. Plan. Take the time to write a business plan. The plan will provide you with a guide to help you manage your business. During this process, you will set goals that help you focus your efforts. 2. Identify your target market. Who are your best customers? There may be several groups of these people. (There’s a general rule of thumb that states: 80 percent of your sales will come from 20 percent of your customers.) What are their levels of income, education, occupations, and interests? What about new potential market segments of customers? 3. Listen to your customers. What products or services do they want? What is important to them (i.e. a drive thru window, delivery service, extended store hours, a website to order from)? How do customers compare your business to the competition? Remember to focus on your customers’ wants and needs. 4. Research your industry. What are future trends in your industry? Is the size of the potential market for your goods and services growing? Is your industry meeting customer needs? Are there new technological innovations that will replace or greatly enhance your industry? (Examine sources of information from the Internet and trade associations.) 5. Check out your competition. Find out who your direct and indirect competitors are and what type of products and services they offer. Don’t forget about online competition. What are your competitors’ advantages and disadvantages? What is your competitive advantage relative to your competitors? Use your strengths to compete. 6. Make certain that you have financial statements and that you understand your financial statements. By examining your company’s financial statements, you will be able to know if your business is actually making a profit and how you can plan for the future. 7. Develop a budget and cash flow projection. Try to plan for your company’s future expenses and expected sales. Make certain you will have adequate cash to operate your business, and try to plan for unexpected contingencies that may increase your expenses or decrease your sales. 8. Analyze your expenses. Consider how you could reduce your expenses without lowering the level of service your customers expect. How can your company be more efficient? 9. Analyze your inventory. Do you have the products customers want to buy? Do you have too much inventory? Is your inventory old and out-of-date? 10. Have a good accountant to help you with tax planning. Don’t wait until you are preparing to pay your taxes this year to consider how you could have saved money on your taxes. 11. Have a good attorney. Get good advice about the form of business you should have (i.e. limited liability company, sole proprietorship, etc.), contracts, and potential problems to avoid. 12. Have a good insurance agent. Are you insured? Protect yourself, your employees, and the assets of your business against loss. 13. Have a marketing plan and budget. What media does your target market use when looking for information about the types of products or services you sell? Which social media platforms are being used? What about traditional media outlets? 14

14. Train your employees. Never assume that the people you hire know how you want your customers to be treated. Train them how to answer the phone, greet customers, answer questions, deal with suppliers, deal with safety issues, etc. 15. Network with other business professionals. Consider participating in the programs and committees at your local Chamber of Commerce, civic organizations, and trade associations. This is a good way to meet other business professionals who may be able to give you key advice about operating your business or refer customers to your business.

16. Maintain your online presence. Make sure that your website and social media pages are up to date. Do you have current pictures posted and accurate phone numbers and addresses? How is your business found using search engines? Is that information accurate? 17. Get assistance from government funded or low-cost programs. The Missouri Small Business Development Center at Missouri Southern State University provides business counseling and training to help both existing and start-up businesses. Missouri Procurement Technical Assistance Centers (MO PTAC) provides counseling, computerized bid matching, and other services for companies interested in selling to federal, state and local government entities.

Members of the “Vote Yes: Our Kids, Our Community” Committee kicked off their campaign for the April 7 no tax increase bond election. The committee, made up of a cross-section of parents and community members, voiced their support of the question, citing the need for a structurally sound, equitable facility. “We appreciate the community history of Columbia and West Central, but there are significant structural and educational challenges; a new facility would allow greater safety and security measures and improved and more flexible learning environments,” said David Weaver, Vote Yes Co-Chair. The April 7 no tax increase bond election includes the construction of a new elementary school located at Dover Hill, to replace the aging Columbia and West Central elementary schools, as well as an addition at Kelsey Norman Elementary School. These projects would address safety and security needs, provide equity in learning environments, and do so without a tax increase.
