PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE The Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce has been working hard to better serve entrepreneurs and start-ups. Here are several recent improvements to Joplin’s entrepreneurial ecosystem: n We have developed new co-working spaces in the newly renovated Newman Innovation Center (NIC) and in the Advanced Training & Technology Center (ATTC). Starting at only $125 per month per desk, our co-working spaces are ideal for entrepreneurs, freelancers, and remote workers seeking community, collaboration, and learning. Co-working tenants get a desk in a shared, communal setting, with amenities such as free Internet access, JACC membership, and access to free educational programs, mentorships, and e-commerce meet-ups. n The Chamber’s new Mentorship Program is now open to entrepreneurs seeking mentors. Topics for discussion include professional growth, leadership development, time management, and how to leverage technologies. Toby Teeter n The Chamber launched an educational series called EdTalks, covering online marketing President and sales technologies. In July, we taught local retailers and e-retailers how to leverage Joplin Area Chamber the Amazon Marketplace to sell products on Amazon.com. In August, we taught how to of Commerce efficiently advertise on Facebook and Instagram. In September, we will cover omni-channel retailing best practices. n In May, we launched a monthly e-commerce meet-up so local businesses selling products online can share best practices and network with one another. As it turns out, there is a large, growing number of local businesses selling product online. n The Chamber, along with a group of business and community leaders, is on the verge of launching a 1 Million Cups chapter in Joplin to educate, engage, and inspire our entrepreneurs. 1 Million Cups (1MC) is based on the notion that great ideas are discussed over a million cups of coffee. 1MC is not a pitch platform, nor is it a networking event. It’s simply a chance for one to two presenting entrepreneurs to tap into the knowledge and experience of the local community in a focused and encouraging environment. n Soon, the Chamber will co-launch an “Innovation District” in collaboration with the Downtown Joplin Alliance, Missouri Southern State University, and the Small Business Development Center to cross promote and provide workspaces, educational programs, pitch competitions, mentorships, and networking opportunities. Joplin is already an amazing place to start a business. Collectively, these new initiatives activate and organize our supportive business community to better serve and champion each other. Watch our calendar for dates on all these programs.

Chamber Benefit Plan Health Insurance Now Available Across Missouri Article Courtesy of Missouri Chamber of Commerce & Industry

With the rising cost of health insurance, many small businesses in Missouri have found themselves either priced out of the market or being forced to offer plans with fewer benefits. However, an innovative health insurance model is poised to change that for thousands of small businesses across the state. The Chamber Benefit Plan, available statewide on August 28, is a joint effort between the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the local chambers of commerce that comprise the Missouri Chamber Federation. The health insurance offered by the Missouri Benefit Plan first rolled out to a limited number of small businesses in 2017. The plan uses an innovative multiple employer welfare arrangement model. This model enables smaller employers to join together and share in the overall claims risk by being part of larger self-funded pool. Currently 1,200 small businesses are part of the plan which is providing coverage to 17,000 Missourians. Those numbers are expected to increase under a new law passed by the Missouri General Assembly and signed by Gov. Mike Parson. “We are thrilled that the Chamber Benefit Plan is now marketable to all eligible businesses in Missouri. Members tell us frequently how the plan has stabilized and reduced their insurance costs while offering great coverage for their employees,” said Daniel P. Mehan, President and CEO of the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry. “We are grateful to the leaders in the Missouri Capitol who took swift action to clear the way for small employers to gain access to medical coverage and savings that directly impact their bottom line, and we look forward to spreading the word about this valuable health insurance option.” The plan is offered across Missouri to businesses with 2-50 eligible employees. Small employers who want to learn more, find a certified broker and listen to testimonials from Missouri small businesses can start by visiting www.chamberbenefitplan.com. “Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield is committed to simplifying health care and we’re proud to partner with the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry to expand the Chamber Benefit Plan, an innovative solution that helps address the rising cost of health care for Missouri small businesses,” says Amadou Yattassaye, president of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Missouri and HealthLink, Inc.

6 Tips for Developing Realistic Business Plans by KAREN BRADSHAW, Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship at Missouri Southern State University

“A goal without a plan is just a wish.” –Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Many people believe that you only need to write a business plan to obtain financing. After all, it takes time to plan. Writing a business plan is really about the mental process you go through in organizing your thoughts to see which ideas will be the most feasible and profitable. This process allows you to obtain input from other successful business owners. If you want your business to improve and grow, effective planning is imperative. Palo Alto Software conducted a survey of almost 3,000 business people. The survey discovered that individuals who completed business plans were about twice as likely to successfully grow their companies, get financial investments, or obtain loans, as those who did not write business plans. Following are tips for developing useful business plans.

SEPTEMBER 2019

BUSINESS OUTLOOK

1. Create, benchmark, and review your ideas. The process of putting your ideas in writing helps you to better formulate successful future actions. You will have a plan that details tangible ideas to revise, improve, and discuss with others. Writing a business plan is an ongoing process, so you need to review your plan several times a year. This process forces you to take an objective and critical look at your strategies. 2. Set goals. Defining goals enables you to look back and see if you have accomplished your annual goals for profitability and growth. The process of writing down your goals and strategies will help you be committed to achieving, measuring, and monitoring your goals. 3. Use your plan to train your employees. An operational business plan that contains your vision, goals, strategies, and policies, will enable you to train your employees. You will be able to convey how you want your business operations to function. 4. Research your target market. Remember, the success of your firm depends upon how you meet your customers’ needs. It is your customer’s perspective, not your thoughts, that will determine the success of your firm. You will need to survey your customers and prospective customers to discover their opinions regarding the types of services and products they want to purchase. Consider how, when and why they want to purchase from your firm. 5. Analyze your competition. You will need to analyze your competitors’ marketing, operational, and distribution strategies in order to write your business plan. This process will allow you to be aware of the competitive forces that affect your company. Competitive intelligence is a continual process. 6. Be realistic about your financial situation. Your plan will require you to prepare realistic and accurate financial statements (i.e., income statements and balance sheets); pro forma income statements for the next three years; monthly cash flow projections for the next year; a narrative describing your financial projections; and a break-even analysis. This process will assist you in examining the financial viability of your company currently and in the future. In summary, remember to revise your plan as new information becomes available and your business grows. Review the plan with your business associates. Use your business plan as a guide to operating a successful business. A business plan is a living document, not a book residing on a shelf. Remember the old adage, “He who fails to plan, plans to fail.” You may want to consider attending a business plan workshop.

Connect2Culture (C2C) and Spiva Center for the Arts (Spiva) are pleased to announce that their month-long crowdfunding effort for The Harry M. Cornell Arts & Entertainment Complex (The Cornell Complex) far exceeded expectations. The crowdfunding effort, held June 3–July 3, 2019, began with a $5,000 match from an anonymous donor – making the initial goal for this specific campaign $10,000 (i.e. $5,000 from the match, plus $5,000 in other contributions). All crowdfunding contributions were accepted through “Cause Momentum,” a crowdfunding platform powered by the Community Foundation of the Ozarks. Due to the generosity of this community, the initial $5,000 was raised before deadline and the anonymous donor was inspired to match all donations, surpassing the initial $5,000 match, through the deadline (i.e. overall, the anonymous donor matched, dollar-for-dollar, for all donations to the month-long effort). By July 3, 2019, a grand total of $20,710 had been raised through the monthlong crowdfunding effort. The Cornell Complex Launch Party, hosted by C2C and Spiva on Monday, June 3, 2019, at the site location, was the official kick-off of this specific crowdfunding effort. The event attracted over 175 attendees, bringing together city and state officials, donors, arts and cultural organizations, and citizens in support of The Cornell Complex. It was there that C2C and Spiva announced they had exceeded the $14 million amount needed to fulfill the Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Joplin and move forward with the project. Cash received, at that time, was reported totaling $5,132,783. Pledges from 192 individuals, businesses, foundations, and groups totaled $14,658,216. Efforts to continue positive momentum and reach the ultimate fundraising goal of $16 million for The Cornell Complex sparked the creation of this month-long crowdfunding effort. C2C and Spiva would like to thank all generous donors who contributed to this crowdfunding project. Money raised during the month-long crowdfunding effort will contribute to the $16 million ultimately needed (continued on next page)

Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce, Trails & Connectivity Work Group Hosts Ryan McFarland, Inventor of Strider Bikes, to Talk About the All Kids Bike Program

SEPTEMBER 2019

BUSINESS OUTLOOK

Program is designed to provide an inclusive learn-to-ride opportunity packed with fun, gratification and success. The Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce (JACC), Trails & Connectivity Work Group is excited to announce their fundraising campaign to assist Joplin Schools in bringing the All Kids Bike program to the district’s Kindergarten physical education classes. The curriculum and bikes are provided by All Kids Bike and the Strider Education Foundation. Joplin Schools and Trails & Connectivity teamed up earlier in the year to begin the process of bringing the Kindergarten PE LearnTo-Ride Curriculum, offered through All Kids Bike and the Strider Education Foundation. The goals of the All Kids Bike program are to instill confidence for the classroom, home and community. Christina Williams with the JACC Trails & Connectivity Work Group shares, “We have the opportunity to help Joplin Schools implement this program for every kindergarten student for years to come - a huge step toward creating a healthier, safer, and more economically attractive Joplin. By creating hundreds of new bike enthusiasts every school year, our kids grow up to support a bike friendly city.” Ryan McFarland, inventor of Strider Bikes, was present to kick off the fundraising campaign. Mr. McFarland invented Strider Bike in 2007 for his son. Through community support, Strider Bikes quickly gained success. In 2014 the Small Business Administration named Mr. McFarland Small Business Person of the Year. Strider Education Foundation was formed in March of 2017 and All Kids Bike launched in November of 2018. The program is being taught in 94 kindergarten PE programs, has impacted 28,500 kids, and is currently active in 16 states. Once the fundraising goal of $3,000 per elementary school is met, this program will provide curriculum, teacher support, 22 Strider bikes, pedal conversion kits, and helmets for each school. “Cycling is a lifetime sport that promotes wellness from childhood into adulthood. We are thrilled to have the chance to bring this enhancement to our PE curriculum so that every Joplin kindergartener can take advantage of the program,” said Dr. Melinda Moss, Superintendent of Joplin Schools. If you are interested in assisting the Trails & Connectivity Work Group and Joplin Schools in reaching their fundraising goal, you may contact the Chamber at 417.624.4150.

Ted Donaldson, Co-founder along with his wife, Amy, of Compass Quest Veterans Advocacy Group in Joplin MO. Compass Quest provides supportive services to veterans and family members in the local area. Ted is a 32 ½ year veteran of the US Air Force where he served as a C-5 Flight Engineer with over 6,000 flying hours including combat missions in Operation Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Ted and Amy are also members of Saginaw Baptist Church which is where Compass Quest began as a ministry in 2014.

A local veteran services non-profit, Compass Quest Veterans Advocacy Group, is utilizing the Frisco Greenway Trail in Joplin to help train and prepare for its annual endurance event, the Compass Quest 22-Kilometer Ruck March. This event has been held for the last five years as a way to raise awareness for the issue of veteran suicides. This year, the Ruck March will be to honor those lost since the onset of the Global War on Terror beginning with the events of September 11, 2001. The event name this year is the Spirit of 9/11 22-K Ruck March and will be held on Saturday September 14, 2019 in Joplin, MO with registration starting at 9:00 AM. The event will start and end at the Redings Mill Bridge and a portion of the Ruck will be along the Wildcat Glades trail that follows Shoal Creek. Compass Quest was founded in 2014 by Ted and Amy Donaldson who both served in the US Air Force during the Global War on Terror as military aviators. They flew combat missions during their service. Ted also flew combat missions during the first Persian Gulf War as well as Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. He was medically retired after sustaining an injury during an Enduring Freedom airlift mission. Amy served for nine years and logged over 1,200 hours of flying before experiencing a traumatic sinus injury which ended her flying career. Many people ask two questions when they learn of these events – What and Why? What is a ruck march and why do a ruck march? First, a Ruck March is a common military term and activity which means to pack your individual military gear into a pack or “Ruck Pack” and then march or move with your unit to a new location while carrying your “Ruck.” Hence, the term Ruck March. That answers the what, so now the why. Military service members, veterans and their family members often find themselves learning to navigate new terrain. The terrain may be topographic or geographic. It can also be spatial or seasonal. Sometimes the terrain is a point in time in their career or the point of transition from military to civilian. It’s the terrain of life and it is affected by duty, promotions, locations, austerity, family, community, amenities and many other influences, including combat. This terrain and its obstacles and difficulties are navigable because of factors such as training, skill development, maturity, discipline and camaraderie. One thing we learn in the military is that we endure these challenges as a team. We truly understand the meaning of teamwork and we also understand that to accomplish the mission we must rely on our teammates, wingmen, battle buddies and others to help us complete the task. Whether it is a 12-month deployment to a combat zone or a 10-mile full ruck march, we help each other to meet the challenges of the mission. Another reason why we ruck is the Joplin community also has a US Army Reserve MP unit and MO National Guard Engineer unit who will both deploy into combat operations later this year. We need to support these community members and their families as well. This answers the why – we do it with others so that when we get to the end we know we have accomplished an arduous task with the help and camaraderie of others. We endure together. Our efforts at Compass Quest to help other veterans is driven by the desire to ensure no one is left behind. Whether it’s about navigating services within the VA or connecting to services and providers in the local area, we work as a team to help transitioning military and veterans overcome obstacles that hinder the pursuit of wellness. Along the way, we hope to provide veterans who struggle with moral injuries and post traumatic stress the tools that help them heal. When we train by carrying our Ruck along the Frisco Greenway Trail, we are transported to another time. A time when we Rucked with our fully loaded packs for seemingly eternal (continued on next page)

distances as a team. We sweat and struggled but we also laughed and joked. When it was over, we had a shared experience that concluded with a “Well Done” for having completed the task. We also made sure we left no one behind. This is an integral component of who we are as veterans. Each military service has a set of core values and a creed. In each service’s creed is the term “Leave no one behind!” As veterans, we also subscribe to a set of core values and a creed that drives us to ensure no one is left behind. Since 9/11, the total casualties in all theaters of operations for all military members is 7,010 deaths as of August 3, 2019. The total wounded is 52,8651. We find ourselves having navigated 18 years of time and terrain since the Global War on Terror began. Citizens don’t have to support the wars but our country must support those who have died or been wounded defending our nation. We also need to help those who have invisible wounds. During this same time, it’s estimated almost 144,000 veterans and serving military have taken the final act to relieve their pain by committing suicide. That number is greater than the combined US military death casualties from all the wars in which we’ve fought since the beginning of the Vietnam war. It’s also greater than all those unaccountedfor POW/MIAs since the beginning of World War II. These suicides left holes in families and communities which never fully heal. Compass Quest has been hosting practice rucks along the Frisco Greenway Trail for the past 4 weeks. We will continue to practice each Monday evening until September 9 at 6:00 PM at the Crowder College parking lot in Webb City along the Frisco Greenway Trail. We are currently doing approximately 8 kilometers or about 5-mile practice rucks but our goal is 22 kilometers or almost 14 miles on September 14! We advise participants to pack light but bring plenty of water. Participants meet lots of new trail users along the way and there is often opportunity to discuss the event and talk about service to our country. This is another important component of this experience, sharing our stories with others. If you want to join us, call Compass Quest for details at 417.438.8387, email us at vetinfo@compassquest.org or sign up on the event page: www.facebook.com/ events/1299626853531755/. Navigating the terrain of life can be challenging especially when going it alone. An integral part of navigating terrain is the compass. In our programs, compass is used as a verb and defined as “to gain with effort.” We gain by helping each other along the way and in the process learn about overcoming adversity by using the strength of the group. Join us for a practice and get to know some of our area veterans. Your efforts will offer the moral support our participants need and will inspire our endeavors to provide outreach and healing as we navigate the terrain.
