remember going “back to school” shopping with my mom when I was in elementary school. We would always go to the local Belk or Sears to buy clothes and shoes. The men’s/boy’s shoe selection was always a sea of black, brown, and maybe some white. Glancing at the women’s/girl’s shoe department one could see an extravaganza of colors, styles, and embellishments. Today this is changing. A revolution in menswear is finally coming along. Rarely does menswear change; like the Supreme Court of theUnited States it takes a long time for menswear to catch up to modern climates. Clothing, accessories, and shoes are becoming reinvented with bold colors and embellishments once exclusive only to womenswear. The modern gentleman is becoming more comfortable with selfexpression and building his confidence every step of the way. As we all know, history is prone to repeat itself so let us bear in mind that these new colorful explorations should be used wisely - remember “day glow” from the 80’s.

lowers are everywhere this season - and I’m not talking exclusively about the pollen secreting flora who’s to blame for all of our cars turning yellow and green. Whether it be printed fabrics, lavish embroideries, silk appliqués, or precious metals and gems, floral is all the rage. It was a long winter and most of us can’t wait to shake the cold and basque in the sunlight. Festivals of all kinds are all the rage. A sense of imagined nostalgia has hit today’s youth, many who claim they wish they were born in the sixties or seventies. The long flowing dresses, large sun hats, scarves, and thrift shop hauls are rampant (especially in college towns). And let’s not even talk about the beards that have lasted way passed the expiration date of “Mo-vember.” I’m not sure if this trend is in direct relation to the economic crash of 2008 or if this is just a youthful phase of rebellion and “sticking it to the man.” Whatever the reason may be, free spirits have always been able to recreate our world through personal growth and a sense of community. If this is the fuel to the fire, I am all for it - as long as we don’t loose sight of proper hygiene.

STRIPES ABOUND

ummer is upon us and the stars are in our eyes as stripes cover beaches, bags, and everything in between. The versatility of stripes is easily implemented in everyday styling. Stripes have the ability to elongate your silhouette, accentuate your height, as well as broaden a less muscular
The origin of our nautical association comes from the Breton stripe which was a result of the French government introducing it into the navel uniforms in 1858. Ever since Coco Chanel pioneered the striped sweater around the 1930’s, this favorite nautical look has taken off in all directions. It is interesting to know how much the Breton stripes have gone though in history, considering how nonchalant we are about them today. Whether it be Parisian chic or purely nautical, there’s one thing for sure - the breton stripes have sailed tumultuous seas but today you can rest them on their laurels.

igh society, music, art, glamour, endless champagne - life was a party in the roaring twenties. Some would call it a Golden Age. Bridal, ready-to-wear, and street style are exploding with re-imagined heirlooms of the past with Hollywood and retail fueling the fire. With the launch of Tiffany & Co.’s Gatsby-esque designs and The Great Gatsby to hit movie theaters May 10, the trends are in an uproar for old Hollywood glitz and glamour. Silhouettes reminiscent of Erte’s artwork with a dash of Anglophilia enchants the mind and transports us to a by-gone time of lavish exquisiteness. I am, personally, a great fan of the great style and class Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grand have perpetuated throughout their careers, however I am concerned for where that leaves us today. Each decade seems to have had an identity, but recently we have only been focusing on reinventing the past. What is the zeitgeist of today? There will always seem to be a golden age in a time other than now, but not everything in history needs to be repeated.
