Architectural Design II Criminal Justice Insitiute Spring 2008 Professor Daelo

Experiencing an architectural work first hand is perhaps the greatest aid in an architects education. The Criminal Justice Institute in Orlando Florida was the introduction of well crafted space that could be experienced first hand. After a site visit where the spaces were documented and measured a wooden model of the CJI’s armature was produced along side diagrams. The wooden model later became the context for the final model. Programmatic elements for a paleontologist and entomologist were then introduced.

The understanding of creating new space begins with an understanding of how existing space works. Aided by Richard Meier’s Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, numerous diagrammatic sketches were produced, eventually leading to four diagrammatic watercolor drawings.

Selected Diagrams of the Criminal Justice Institute

The Entomologist spaces are located in a horizontal pattern above grade resulting in a hierarchy of spaces. These spaces are smaller than others due to the nature of the profession. The paleontologist spaces are located below grade due to their professional nature. From each observation space the occupants are in a position to view both sets of study spaces as well as the opposing observation spaces.
