Mommy & Me

Editor Letter By Melody Dawes Editor in Chief

The best way to enjoy every moment of summer as a new mom is to be prepared with a variety of fun and games for your little ones. That being said, you will find yourself hanging on to this issue of Mommy and Me as it will almost become like your personal handbook. We had much fun talking about and finding games for children to play. If we could have stolen away a little time, we would have created some Moon Sand or had a Marshmallow Fight. We had to restrain ourselves from devoting an entire day to play. However, if you are a new mom, or a momto-be, I recommend you do just that. Devote a day to play. Devote a weekend to a party with your kids. Do not let these summer days pass you by without spending time holding, hugging, rocking, and playing with your child. We have loved hearing your feedback on this new magazine. Feel free to stay in touch with us if you have questions or comments at info@jordawpublishing.com.

Why Dads Need

Maternity Leave Too By Nicole Molter

Did you know Australia has paid leave for both parents when a new baby is born? Maternity leave is common for

new mommies in the United States, paid or unpaid depending on her workplace. Have you thought about how much your husband may need paternal leave as well? New daddies need to get to know their newborn babies, too. From the first time Daddy holds his new son or daughter, the bonding begins and so does the learning experience. This is

an exciting time to form a relationship, figure out what more of being a daddy is all about, and adore those little pink hands and feet! Most men actually love being around the newest member of the family for a few days. He feels more included in the process, and it breeds a wonderful opportunity for the baby to begin watching for moments with Daddy as much as Mommy. After the delivery, Mom needs help recouping and lots of rest. Grandparents

are great to have around for help, but there’s nothing like having your man there to help, too. A new baby is a new experience that strengthens your relationship as a couple. With the physical assistance of changing diapers and grabbing bottles and pacifiers, there is also a need for emotional support. Both Mom and Dad need to know they are taking care of one another as well as taking care of a baby. There’s nothing better than sharing this experience together for those first few days after delivery.

Last To-Dos Before Baby Preparing for a new baby is more than just taking birth classes and packing your hospital bags. What else have you wanted to do as a couple before the little one arrives? By Nicole Molter

Take a weekend trip together. You don’t have to go skydiving or anything crazy. Just relax and enjoy being the two of you before your family becomes three. Find a little bed and breakfast a few hours away or go to the beach. Maybe even go to a concert! Stay in bed all day and snuggle. You won’t have this luxury for the first several weeks of the new baby’s life and little in the next 18 years. This time is perfect to binge watch that new series on Netflix and stay in your pajamas all day.

10

Mommy & Me

Have a party with friends. Cook out, make some tasty desserts, and enjoy a nice evening playing games or being outside. If any of your friends have kids, practice interacting with them. Remember those slumber parties with your girl friends in high school? Spend the weekend with your girl friends, eat junk food, and watch cheesy chick flicks. This would definitely be tons of fun, and will get your mind off any stress preparing for the baby. Take a class – knitting, painting, pottery. What about a belly-dancing

class? Seems appropriate with a baby on the way. You will always cherish taking this time to give yourself a treat before your attention is divided with children.

BREASTMILK:

It Does a Baby Good! Valeri Gatlin IBCLC Registered Lactation Consultant

How moms feed their babies is a personal choice. Breastfeeding is growing in popularity and now even celebrities like Beyonce, Kristen Bell and Alyssa Milano have jumped on the breastfeeding bandwagon. Ever wonder why? Here are the top five reasons moms are choosing breastmilk for their babies: 1. Breastfeeding is Mom’s new SUPERPOWER! The American Academy of Pediatrics reports that studies suggest a decrease rate of diabetes, lymphoma, obesity and ear infections in breastfed children. 2. GARLIC! The flavor one study showed to be a favorite of babies. Mom’s milk is flavored by the foods she eats making for a less picky toddler. 3. SKIP THE GYM! A mom’s body burns 300-500 calories per day just making milk. Burning calories has never been easier! 4. GO GREEN! Breastmilk is the ultimate organic, preservative free and eco-safe food. Moms know exactly where it comes from and how it was made. 5. READY WHEN YOU ARE! Breastmilk is ready for baby, exactly when they need it. Nothing to buy, prepare, clean or warm. The ultimate take out dinner for mom’s little one.

Chalk Up the

Afternoon to Games By Nicole Molter

Chalk creates an activity wherever there’s a sidewalk or a wooden fence. Kids can play games or just use their creativity and draw pictures!

Simon

Obstacle Course

Puddle Art

Sidewalk Constellations

Remember the blinking game with all the different colors? A chalk version can be drawn on the concrete to play, too. Shout out different colors and then the kids jump on to that color. This is a great way to practice colors for younger children and use up some energy!

Who says rain isn’t good weather for chalk? Make puddle art with the leftover pieces of chalk in the bottom of the chalk bucket.

14

Mommy & Me

Draw out circles to jump onto, a line to do a pretend tightrope walk, and write out different activities like “spell your name before you can continue.” An obstacle course is another activity that can be created by chalk.

Place rocks in the patterns of constellations, then have the kids connect the dots to learn constellations or other shapes. They can even create their own constellations and have their friends guess.

Hopscotch

Draw hopscotch squares with each letter of a name inside. This is a great way for young learners to remember how to spell their own names or names of their friends and family!

Backgrounds

The imaginations of children are awesome! Let them release those imaginations on the backyard fence with a chalk scene. After it’s drawn, act out a play!

A Young Lady’s Guide to Planning Her Tea Party By Nicole Molter Photography by Allison Terry Images

First things first, who are you going to invite? Your dolls or friends from school would make lovely guests. Let them know a few days before your party, so they can plan to come. Mom would probably be happy to help fill out invitations. Be sure to include a time and place! Draw a picture of your friends at your party here:

Marshmallow

Shooters By Nicole Molter

Marshmallow shooters are GUARANTEED to keep your crew occupied for hours. Also, no worries of having a window broken out! You will need cake pop containers (the plastic tube), a balloon, scissors, min marshmallows, and a rubber band. First, tie a knot in the un-inflated balloon and cut the top off. Next, stretch the balloon over the cake pop container. Reinforce the balloon by putting a rubber band around the tube, too. Grab a bag of ‘mallows and you’re ready to play!

Deluxe Bubble

Recipes By Nicole Molter

22

Mommy & Me

Bubbles, bubbles, bubbles! This activity is so great to keep children entertained! Mix up your common bubble recipe with a few new ingredients to make stronger bubbles or even Jell-O red bubbles!

Deluxe Bubbles Recipe 1 quart (4 cups) warm water 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup dishwashing liquid

Instructions: Combine the sugar and

the warm water. Stir until the sugar is fully dissolved. Add the dishwashing liquid and stir again. Store in an airtight container. Sugar is supposed to add strength to the bubbles!

Crazy Deluxe Bubbles Recipe 1 cup warm water 2 tablespoons liquid dish or laundry detergent 1 tablespoon glycerin 1 teaspoon white sugar

Instructions: Gently stir all ingredi-

ents together and store in an airtight container. Given the right conditions you might lose sight of your bubbles

before they pop! With this mixture, try making human-size bubbles with a hula hoop!

Jello Bubbles

1 part dishwashing liquid 1 part Jell-O brand (or generic) powder, any flavor/color 8 to 10 parts warm water

Instructions: Gently combine all three ingredients. Avoid creating suds by mixing too vigorously. Suds will affect the “bubbliness” of your bubbles. They probably don’t taste very good with the soap in them. Make some cherry Jell-O instead!

Tear-Free Bubbles

1/4 cup tear-free baby shampoo 3/4 cup water 3 Tablespoons light corn syrup

Beautiful Bubbles {with food coloring}

1/3 cup dishwashing liquid 1 1/4 cups water 2 teaspoons sugar 1 drop food coloring

Instructions: Combine all ingredients

together in a jar or other resealable container. Use outside to avoid staining any indoor fixtures, carpet or upholstery.

Non-Toxic, Natural Bubbles

1/4 cup natural, biodegradable dish detergent 1 cup water 1 teaspoon glycerin

How to make bubbles: Mix up all in-

gredients in a resealable container. Let stand overnight for best results.

Instructions: Mix all ingredients, then wait for the bubbles to settle before using. This recipe is great for little kids with sensitive eyes! Mommy & Me

Out of This World

Moon Sand By Nicole Molter

This sand is not really from the moon, but you can pretend right? This activity is great for developing fine motor skills. Be sure to keep the moon sand in a confined area, because it can still get messy! You will need:

4 cups play sand 2 cups corn starch 1 cup water 2 tablespoons colored powder paint (You choose the color!) large glitter Mix the sand and cornstarch in a large bowl until thoroughly combined.

24

Mommy & Me

Then add water in increments; mix as you pour. After adding in all the water, the consistency should be similar to a crumbly dough. If it doesn’t hold together in a ball, add a little more water. It shouldn’t be wet, just a little damp. Next, you can stir in your favorite color and glitter if you wish!

2-ingredient Popsicles:

Easy and Delicious

Who doesn’t love a good popsicle on a hot day? Popsicles are the perfect treat to satisfy your sweet tooth and cool off. Popsicle molds are fairly easy to find, or you can just use small cups with a sheet of foil to hold the sticks in place. If you have trouble removing frozen popsicles from the mold, run under warm water.

Creamy Yogurt Dreamsicle

Banana-Nutella

Allow can of orange juice concentrate to soften for about an hour before making popsicles. Hand mix vanilla yogurt with the softened orange juice concentrate. Pour into popsicle molds and add sticks. Freeze, eat, then make more!

6 large overripe bananas, peeled ½ cup Nutella

Directions (makes about 10):

26

Mommy & Me

Blend overripe bananas until completely pureed. Next, add the Nutella until completely mixed in for the perfect banana to chocolate ratio. Pour into popsicle molds, add popsicle sticks, and freeze for 3 to four hours. Sounds so good!

1 can softened frozen orange juice concentrate 1 ¼ cup of vanilla yogurt

Directions (makes about 10):

Watermelon coconut 2 cups chopped watermelon or 1 ½ cups pureed watermelon ½ cup shredded coconut (optional) fresh mint to add a little extra refreshing flavor

Directions (makes about 8):

Add chopped watermelon slices to a blender and puree until smooth. Add the shredded coconut and give it one more spin in the blender. Pour the mixture into popsicle molds. Set in the sticks and place in the freezer for at least four hours. They may need longer to freeze completely. Then you eat them!

Blackberry Grape

6 oz. box blackberries 1 large bag (1 pound) seedless red grapes

Directions (serves 9):

processor or blender. After the fruit is blended, put through a sieve if you prefer seedless popsicles. Pour mixture into your molds, stick in your popsicle sticks, then freeze for 6 hours. Fruity-licious!

Pick grapes from the stems. Add grapes and blackberries to a food

Root beer Float

12 to 14 ounces of root beer 1 ¼ cups vanilla bean ice cream, slightly softened

Directions (serves about 10):

Pour small amounts of root beer into each popsicle mold. Evenly distribute ice cream between popsicle molds in spoonfuls. Pour more root beer into the molds; don’t let the foam escape! Fill up remaining room in the molds and insert sticks. Freeze and enjoy your root bear float in popsicle form!

Strawberry Coconut Cream

1 15-ounce can cream of coconut 3 heaping cups of frozen whole strawberries

Directions (should make about 10):

Pour coconut cream into a blender, then add one cup of strawberries. Process until smooth, then add remaining cups of strawberries and process again until smooth. Then pour into popsicle molds, filling about ¾ full. Place wooden stick in center of each. The mixture should be thick enough to hold each stick in place – awesome! Freeze for about 4 hours then enjoy! Mommy & Me

Jumbo Jenga

A giant Jenga set would be such a fun activity while you wait for your barbecued dinner to grill. Building the set is easy! 28

Mommy & Me

By Nicole Molter

Tools

tape measure | table saw | pencil | finishing sander | marker

Supplies

2 x 4 planks of wood 2ft by 2ft flat board carrying bag The Jenga sets can be made into all different sizes, but a good size is a foot long per piece. Use the tape measure and pencil or marker to measure and mark before cutting the pieces with the table saw. To avoid splinters in little fingers, sand each piece. This also makes the pieces easier to slide out from the Jenga tower. You’re ready to play! Set the flat board on the bottom when you don’t have a flat surface to play on. Everything should transport easily from yard to yard in a large duffle bag!
