We’ve come a long way! The UAP-Bahrain is now celebrating its 3rd Chartering Anniversary as a Chapter. Few years ago we were still running all over Bahrain recruiting Filipino Architects to join the formation of UAP-BHC. Now we have engage on helping non-Registered Filipino Architects to achieve their dreams of becoming RLA’s amidst being away from our home. 33 new Architects has been produced since we started the SPLBE review and more will come. This organization is not only molded by aspirations but driven with passion to serve and to help. Again, Congratulations to all the members, this is an exceptional achievement. Mabuhay tayong lahat!!!

UNITED ARCHITECTS OF THE PHILIPPINES BAHRAIN CHAPTER

MESSAGE The United Architects of the Philippines – Bahrain Chapter has come a long way. From simple meetings at a Filipino Restaurant to create a chapter to conducting of Oath taking ceremonies of New Licensed Architects. The youngest and arguably with the smallest population and active members among UAP Chapters in the Gulf, UAP Bahrain continues to move forward with its goal of uniting and empowering Filipino Architects, licensed and auxiliary alike. In 3 years, UAP BH has produced 33 Architects, albeit not having a local examination center, producing most number of passers among all the professional organization in Bahrain. A testament to the dedication of its officers and members to mentor and nurture auxiliary members, as well as to make the Chapter bigger and a more proactive organization. We would like to extend our warmest appreciations to the people and organizations who have been ever supportive with all the endeavors of UAP Bahrain Chapter. The Embassy of the Philippines in Bahrain, headed by Ambassador Sahid S. Glang, OWWA-POLO headed by Labor Attaché Felixberta Romero. The Philippine Professional Organization – Bahrain and its member organizations. UAP Middle East and North African Council and all the Chapters comprising it. All our employers, our families, our church groups and other organizations. The generous donors who shares their vision with the organization, and lend a helping hand with our activities. As one celebrity has said “It’s your time to shine”. As architects, not only do you have a responsibility to your employer and client, but to the organization in which you belong and who nurtured you in to what you have accomplished. We encourage the new batch of architects to be more active, to be visible, to share whatever knowledge you have gained in your journey in becoming an architect. Be an inspiration. Stand tall and be recognized. We have laid out a good foundation for the future generation of architects who will continue to run the organization. As any structure, it will not stand by rocks or by sand alone, you have to make a seamless mixture of sand, gravel, cement and steel. The same goes with an organization, we roll out different ideas, we are people of different characteristics, but at the end of the day, we are all architects and that is what bonds us. We rely on each other. It makes us stronger. It makes us one.

Warmest greetings to the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP)_Bahrain on your Third Anniversary celebration. Founded with a mission of helping architectural graduates in acquiring their professional licenses, UAP has grown effectively for the first three years of existence. Producing professionals outside the country is not an easy task but because of your determination, dedication and hard work, you have succeeded. Though we are in a foreign land (Bahrain) you were able to overcome the many difficulties in sending your examinees to another foreign land (United Arab Emirates) and successfully produced new architects with one of the best percentage rate of passing. I salute each and every member of your organization for a job-well-done. Keep up the good work! Mabuhay ang UAP! Mabuhay ang Philippine Professional Organization (PPO)_Bahrain.

ast November 29, 2014 9 out of 11 successful aspirants from “batch conspicuous” have taken their oath under the enthusiastic and untiring support from our Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain, His Excellency Hon. Sahid S. Glang. The event was also highlighted with the presence of our Labor Secretary of the Philippines Hon. Rosalinda Baldoz who congratulated all board passers of different discipline and praised all the efforts and dedication given by the officers and members of PPO (Philippine Professional Organization) including our own UAP. It was February of 2014 when UAP Bahrain Chapter has started conducting its 4th year of review sessions in Holiday Inn Plaza Hotel. The roaster of reviewers come different architectural firms/companies all over Bahrain whose primarily aim is to follow the footsteps of the past board passers

which is to obtain license and become a certified Architect. The morning till afternoon review during Fridays was a big sacrifice to all our aspirants. Most of them are spending their own rest day just to attend and learn about the latest and trending exams from past till the present. Aside from the review sessions, the aspirants are also having their own group review which tackles more deeply with the past lessons. This kind of group review sessions started way back the second batch of examiners of 2012 which in turn proved to be an added tool in achieving high scores and undeniably consistent high rankings among the testing centers all over the Middle East. The night that every aspirant has been waiting for has come, the oath taking ceremony that culminates the long and excruciating 8 months of review sessions which trailing from February to October. The families, relatives, friends and colleagues of each

successful aspirant have gathered on this meaningful event to witness this once in a lifetime celebration. All smiles and enthusiasm were obviously seen in their faces, the experience and the feeling of completeness has definitely emerged on that night. The oath taking event was held in Sheraton Hotel Bahrain Awali Ballroom, Manama, and Kingdom of Bahrain. In behalf of UAP Bahrain Chapter, let me extend my congratulations to our brave soldiers who fought a good fight and stood proud not only to become and Architect but also put pride on our chapter as one of the strongest contender and high ranking standing in the SPLBE Middle East Region. We’re hoping that this trending will continue and reach all other aspirants to dream big and achieve what you have conquered. Maraming Salamat po and Mabuhay

CONSTRUCTION KNOWLEDGE

Good Practice on Health and Safety at Construction. D[ #T 4QDGTV # (CDTQU 7#2

Most people including clients and professionals for design, building and construction have a common perception that project construction H&S (health and safety) are the responsibility only by the appointed or employed project construction safety officers, and that H&S in construction starts only at the project construction site when it starts. Organizing project construction H&S is a collective responsibility of all stakeholders or people involve in the project. Good H&S practice on construction projects requires a good practice of detailed responsibilities from the Clients, Designers, Consultants, Contractors, and even the public. Health and safety distinguished professionals Phil Hughes MBE and Dr. Ed Ferret wrote a textbook for the NEBOSH (National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health) that has outlined the following “good practice on H&S for each construction project stakeholder: “The Client must provide pre-construction information to designers and contractors for the project. And when choosing appointees must ensure suitable management arrangement considering competence offered over cost offered for the project; it should not

always the lowest bidder but the most qualified appointee must be considered for the project. Clients must also allow sufficient time and resources for all work stages setting up quality as top priority; we can consider the project equation: SAFETY = QUALITY = COST+TIME. “Also Clients must ensure that the Contractors satisfactory compliance to H&S practice. The Contractor must provide its H&S policy, H&S organization with details of individual responsibilities; provide information on the Contractor’s safe working procedures and standards. The Client must ensure the Contractor has a clear understanding of the required H&S practice in the particular project; Contractors documents must be reviewed such as method statements, risks assessments which can be detailed procedure to implement H&S and make audit, and procedures in investigating and reporting incidents. “The Designers during their design works must eliminate hazards and reduce risks and provide information about remaining risks on carrying out the construction of the project and even on the maintenance after. “The Contractors must continuously plan, provide information, manage and monitor their own work and that of

employees. The Contractors must check the competence of all their appointees and employees making them always ready by giving beforehand risks information, and enforce them by providing proper training. The Contractor must acquire H&S requirements from authorities that govern over the location of the construction project, and ensure adequate compliance particularly regarding the welfare facilities for their employees “All and everyone must cooperate together and coordinate works that includes reporting obvious risks to ensure the H&S of construction workers and all who may be affected by the work. When serious accident happens in a construction there is no ‘construction accident re-insurer’ can give us the chance to bring back what has been damage and lost, we cannot re-write what has happened. But we can stop the known risks from happening on our construction project but only if we assure and perform our competence and maintain good communication, cooperation, and coordination. As architects we have a big responsibility in promoting good practice in health and safety at work.

“All and everyone must cooperate together and coordinate works that includes reporting obvious risks to ensure the H&S of construction workers and all who may be affected by the work.

irst of all my heartfelt thanks and dedication to my family, loved one's, relatives and friends who supported and gave me inspiration to do my very best in my career. Especially to my late Father and Brother, I know they believed and were very proud of me since I graduated Architecture and the fulfillment of my dreams into reality. I Love you all. No words can express how much I feel happy at this time.

I love Architecture, since I was a child I like to draw lines until I finish my course. After my graduation in 1986 it was an answered prayer to work in manila for 4 years in able to finance my family. Due to my perseverance for achieving my dreams, I decided to try my lack for greener pastures to work in Bahrain from 1990 till present. Time passes by so fast recognizing that I'm not yet contented on the degree that I have, until they organized a group SPLBE 2011 for review class on Architects Licensure Examination ( ALE ) in Middle East . I didn't enroll the first batch cause I'm not yet ready financially. Finally my colleague encourage me to join and attend the review class SPLBE 2014. It took a long journey, endeavor , endurance and lot of sacrifices to fulfill my goals. Abu Dhabi is a memorable place that I couldn't forget aside from the good memories even we spend a short span of time. I thought I couldn't able to take the examination because there were a little bit problem on our documents in Manila/Bahrain, I can't explain my feelings, it was mixed emotions of angry and nervous. God is really good, he let all to become ok. After the exam there were sleepless nights , emotional and physical torture on myself thinking the outcome if I pass or not. Finally I saw my name on the list, I cried ( tears of joy ). It was the happiest day of my life and I can shout to the world that I'm now a REGISTERED ARCHITECT !!!!! Special thanks to UAP Bahrain Officers, our mentor, leader Ar. efore and during those two days of the licensure examination, I have set my mind around certain thinking. It is not just a test of knowledge and experience; it is also a test of perseverance and mindset knowing that I cannot know everything and the question of what can I do about the things I do not know. Distractions will always be there; telling myself even others to focus is not always easy. I have learned that passion overcomes the pressure that people and circumstances that push you down. Whenever you are under pressure, remember the reason why you are doing what you are doing in the first place. Nothing is too difficult to achieve if you love what you do and you do it for the people you love. Passion is a solid driving force to fulfill our dreams. Another thing is that faith overcomes doubt and fear. You are always the first person to believe in yourself. If others can do it, so can you. It may not always be exactly what you wanted, but if you mean it for good, there is always a blessing in it. Remember that the good Lord has already given you the strength to work hard and wisdom to appreciate, accept share the things that you have received. It is such an unforgettable opportunity to experience.

Everyone has those people that doubt your capabilities, saying that you cannot do it. Don't take it to heart bitterly but instead take it as a challenge. Then there's another kind of people around you, those that believe that you can. Take that as an inspiration.

"I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all." Ecclesiastes 9:11

The preparations that we have invested in reviewing, researching and group studies, I have learned that hard work will never be in vain whether you succeed to achieve your goal or not. There is always something to gain in both of those sides, that is to say, new opportunities. Whether we succeed the way we want to or not,

n my journey towards becoming a license Architect was not easy for me, it was tough. At first, I really don’t know how to begin with, am I ready to take the board? So, I said to myself, "I would only take the board exam once, so make it to the fullest.” This is my dream, my family’s dream. The review has been one of the most rewarding phases of my life. I remember, before I started my review, I was ecstatic and enthusiastic! I was

starving for knowledge because I knew, I didn’t have enough of it to pass the examination… but it’s decided, it’s ON, as I’ve looked forward for a fresh new beginning. Initially, I was “Fiddling while Rome burns.” I was occupied watching movies & TV Series and just found myself cramming on the later part. I caught myself awake at 5 AM (actually a week before the examination only, lol), there were “nosebleed” moments memorizing all the building codes (minimum-maximum standards). I have met new people who became my friends and some of them my travel buddies. Indeed a journey to remember, a journey in which I am grateful, the overwhelming support and prayers from friends, mentors and our families are truly heartwarming. In conclusion, we were all able to pass the board exam not because of pens or triangles that we used. We nailed the ALE because we were prepared for it! May the Lord bless our mentors who taught us efficiently and we dedicate our success to them as well. And so I say that the recipe towards achieving success in every facet of life, one of which is the ALE is to get discipline, be fueled with love, faith, hope, perseverance, and lay our cause before the Lord. Because above all, it will be “His good and perfect will” that will always prevail. This has been our dream. This has been the utterance of our prayers. This has been our hope. A dream is now a reality! An answered prayer! A promise of hope in our future! Indeed a miracle from the One above. “If you don’t know where to start, always start from where you are.” Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give the desires of your heart. - Psalm 37:4 All Glory to God!

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Good day ladies and gentlemen. I would like to start my speech by acknowledging the goodness and faithfulness of our Dear LORD, who has been my source of strength all throughout this journey. My mental, physical aspects have been tested over and over to such points that I even thought I couldn’t make it. During these times when we I was so tired and wrung out, wishing that I could have added a couple of hours to each day just to cope and accomplish all that is required of me. But the scripture says in Phil 4:13 says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Indeed, God has never left me in every step of the way. His guidance, grace and mercy is always present every time I face uncertainties and doubts. And let me tell you what exactly I felt before even knowing that I passed the board exam, there was a part of me who’s a bit of hesitant, thinking that, what if I failed? I might disappoint those people who believe in me? But I was reminded of God’s unfailing promise, in scripture says, "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” And so I claimed it. So when I checked the results and saw my name included in the list, I uttered a prayer and thank God for this wonderful gift. Indeed, without his divine guidance and wisdom, I won’t be standing in front of you now. Kailanman, hindi hahayaan ng Panginoon na mapahiya ang kaluwalhatian Nya.

Thank you so much for your prayers. I will just leave you with this verse from the bible, that I treasure a lot. It’s from Genesis 28:15, ”I AM with you and will watch over you, wherever you go. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”

MY SPLBE STORY

AR. JECKSON D. MAGBOO TECHNOLOGICAL INSTITUTE OF THE PHILIPPINES QUEZON CITY

“It's not just all about the License, but it's the fulfillment on achieving something that fills the missing piece of your identity as a person. "Do I really need a Professional License?"... Maybe the following year after I graduated in Architecture 11 years back from now... and, Maybe Not when I started raising a family and got a stable source of income abroad - so in principle, the obvious answer is NO. This is an argument between me and myself for the past several years until I manage the come up with a good response to that question last year. It seems that it became my get-away justification of what is supposed to be done. But of course, my stubbornness to take the right decision infects my mentality on how to deal with this type of question until such time it came to a point that it eventually became a ghost that haunts me down all the time.

The truth is, something's missing and something is left hanging in my line of education and profession. But the worse truth is that I knew all along what's the missing piece and I kept on pretending it's alright and come on, it's not the end of the world if I don't get a license...yeah right, but to be honest I have this fear of failure thinking that I might not be able to recover if I fail. I'm pretty sure, I can go on and keep on denying myself that license for a month more, a year maybe, 2 more years, 3, 4, 10, or maybe more. The funny thing is that despite of the conclusion that I make over and over again, I often find myself trapped again on that silly question unconsciously. At some point, I realized that this has to stop. February 28, 2014, was the turning point away from what I have set myself to believe for the past 10 years. Enough of denials, excuses, stubbornness, & fear of failure - pass or fail, I'm going to give it a shot. I knew that whatever happens, that ghost that I myself created won't stop haunting me until I face and battle it for good.

So I decided to register to SPLBE courtesy of UAP Bahrain Chapter last year as a start of my journey to do what is needed to be done - to take a chance on securing that license. After 3 consecutive years of letting SPLBE program pass by in front of me doing nothing. This time, there's no turning back. So Friday review classes started last March 2014, and to my surprise, it didn't even crossed my mind to skip a single class whereas the recent SPLBE year(2011) have had me into a good start and buckled out midway of the program. I guess it's just really a matter of decision and your conviction to that decision. So there it goes, review classes are over and it's time for me to face the real battle. FEBRUARY 2015

TESTIMONY Come October 3 & 4, 20 14, I have to admit that fear punctured through my nerves those days especially the first day. But I have no other resort but to calm myself down and whisper "God kung sa tingin mong ginawa ko na ang parte ko ng tama, ikaw na po ang bahala sa mga susunod" (God if you think I did my part the way I should, I'll leave to you the rest). This proves that prayer before that exam is one of the most powerful weapon an examinee should be equipped with, as it is not the exam that most of us expected, but for some reason we manage to pull it off with just enough comfort except of course to my shaded "E" circles on my answer sheet where the choices are only "A" to "D"... That almost got me sleepless for almost a month...=) By the way, my wife (Madelaine S. Magboo) was with me on this important journey of our career, and we both were hoping that we could snatch that license after we both graduated in Architecture Degree at Technological Institute of the Philippines Q.C. 11 years ago. November 5, 2014, Me and my wife's going to celebrate her Birthday that day and the week before that we were like throwing presumptions that the result might come at the day of her birthday as her present.... Coincidentally, it did! At last, SPLBE Architecture Board Passers were posted at the PRC website! I was like a sculptured sitting guy made of ice and when I saw our names on the list it was a horrendous relief. Finally, IT'S OVER! I will never forget how happy me and my wife were that day. “An Unexpected but Worthwhile Journey A father's dream!

I

can still recall how my Dad persuade me to take up Architecture... It wasn't even in my wildest dream to become an Architect. I wasn't sure though at that time what I really wanted, and so with a much encouragement from my parents I blindly took up the course. I remember crying over the phone talking to my Dad asking him if I can transfer to a different course because I can't take the pressure anymore and he said ' if you fail any subject I will let you shift to another course' and by miracle I didn't fail any subject throughout the 5 years degree. A proof that it is meant to be!

At first it wasn't a big deal if I don't have my license, I have a job that let me do a licensed Architect do. But as my husband always say there is something missing... And so together with him we registered to take up the SPLBE, under UAP-Bahrain Chapter which was ongoing since 2011. I've joggle work and reviewing at the same time. Which every working reviewer would understand that it's really not that easy, but with determination, perseverance, sacrifices, and faith you can conquer anything. Past the examination date, on the same day as my birthday, I've received the unexpected gift... Passing the Architecture Licensure Exam!!! What a joyful, overwhelming happiness it was! One of the memorable birthdays I have in years... Thank you everyone.... We won't accomplished this success without the help of UAP-Bahrain Chapter, Ar. Robert Fabros for pushing us to take the exam, Ar. Rayan Ceballo for coordinating the review and last minute signing of our log book, Ar. James Cochon for encouraging us to move forward and never give up, Ar. Donnie Sadia for arranging the struggles we've face during the submission of our documents , Ar. Malou Togonon for our travel documents, Ar. Roland Cueto, all Batch Bullies mentors especially Ar. Ariel Indefenzo who were always there to answer our questions. To Batch Conspicuous (Donald, Ivan, Jeckson, Jenda, Joseph, Lani, Lito, Ronnie, Rolly, Rudolf, Ryan) for the sleepless nights, friendship and believing on the success of everyone. To my family... Daddy Buday & Mheko for the Dua/Ad'iyah, Kuya Rouald, Ate Leah & Ihman for the prayers and Aldaine for supporting us. To my family-in-law... Papa Gabe & Mama Onic for the prayers, Ate Jing for always believing and lighting the candles for us. To my loving husband whom I walked the journey since day one, for pushing me whenever I'm feeling down or frustrated and to my daughter Nicah who always inspire me to do the best. I must mention, that the time I started preparing for the exam I was completely unconfident and even thought I had very few chances to pass the exam, but thanks to all the mentors who managed to build up my confidence and knowledge. Also, I am very grateful for the advice about relaxing and keeping myself calm at the exams – it really worked. "Commit to the lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed" Proverbs 16:3

VILLANUEVA TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES – MANILA BS ARCHITECTURE -BATCH 2012 “Architecture is not just designing buildings, but a world of diversity and difference that coincide with the same goal.” That moment when I decide to take the licensure exam, I knew something will change. Change that is inevitable. Change that I need to embrace. Change that I need to nourish. What it’s like to be an Architect? Question that pops up in my head every time I dream to be an Architect, A lifelong dream they said. But how can we be sure of? I found a quote in the internet that really touches my architecture story. “The moment when you realize as difficult as architecture school is, it is also one of the best times of our life” – Anonymous. It may be hard at start, and we all know starting is always the hard part of every milestone of our life. But when you realize that you’re destined to be like that. The universe will conspire to help you reach your dreams no matter what obstacles and hardships you will face before reaching the aim. You’ll know you’re just getting there not because you’re destined to have the title, but the experience of striving to get it. Take a risk, take a chance, and make a change. Just remember, “When obstacles arise, you can change your direction to achieve your goal, you do not change your decision to get there”.

Everyone has a dream, or we may say “ Goal,” and

for me ,there is no shortcut for it. Hindrances will always be there, and it comes in many forms. It’s up to you on how to deal with them. A few of these are your finance and people around you. Finance, will be the number one on my list. I think this one is the most common.Life wasn’t easy for me, since my parents couldn’t afford to send me to college. What I did was just grabbing opportunities such as scholarships and working at part-time jobs, such as fast food chain crew. I also worked on my uncle’s Art and Sign shop. Well, it was not that much. But of course , I was still young so it was a big thing for me. Second in the list are the people around me. Who often time besmirch me, by saying “ Mataas na ang punong niyog” ( The coconut tree, has grown tall). Instead of encouraging you, they try to pull you down. “ Crab mentalities” we may say. One that really, strikes my heart and through my bone, is the word I’ve heard “ Ambisyoso” ( ambitious). Well, since we are poor. They thought it was “ Suntok sa buwan” ( A punch to the Moon) to finish College. But, thanks to them. They were the reason why I strived hard and bring out the best in me. It is called “ Turning negative into positive”.

I always thought that finishing college would be enough. Thinking about the, GCC countries does not recognize PRC License. So,I just took it for granted and it was hard for me to take the Board Exams. Since there was no Board exams in Davao City, I needed to go to Manila and had to stay there for sometime but i didn’t have the budget for it. Well, I told myself what’s the use? So, I decided to work abroad and ended up in the Kingdom of Bahrain. It freaked me out, when somebody told me that PRC license is a must. The worse part is that PRC, doesn’t conduct exams here. Quite funny but that was how ended up here in the GCC where no board exams and PRC license were required. So, since the day I’ve come to know. That it was like this here, I treated this Board exam as “ My Mount Everest”. I found it, so hard to achieve and indeed I was right.

Actually, this was my second attempt. The first one, I withdrawn due to financial reason. But, I did not stop on the review. The second time around , I’m about to withdraw again.

Thanks to the UAP Bahrain leaderships, they made a miracle. It was the proof of the saying that, “If miracles don’t come, make one”. Indeed they had made one in span of time by calling the PRC-acting chairman, her waking up the Director for the exam and him waking up the Head of Admission. Just to assure, that we will be allowed to take the Board. Take note, it is in the middle of the night. Perhaps, they are asleep . Despite the odds, I pass the board exams with flying colors. Again, thank you very much, UAP-Bahrain Chapter. Also , thanks to the people behind the success. To the instructors, mentors, facilitators, officers and members of UAP-Bahrain Chapter for a job well done. To Ar. Jose “ Joe” Racho my mentor, for signing my logbook. Thank you sir. e've been together since our college years. Back then, all we're worried about is how to pass our subjects and submit our drawing plates in time and precise. But now, raising a family is the focal point of our attention as a couple. Acquiring our license as an Architect were pushed aside for the past 9 years until we decided to take the board examination last year. We were too busy on our family life and on sustaining a living. But then an opportunity knocked way back in 2011. UAP Bahrain Chapter organized an overseas examination for under board graduates of Architecture. We were so diligent to join at first but eventually fell short and decided to back out that year. We felt that the time was too short to get ourselves ready for the examination and in addition, in some reason we don't find enough persistence on our side during that time. For the next 2 years, UAP Bahrain Chapter continued to successfully pursue on producing Licensed Architects here in Bahrain. Again, we didn't felt the eagerness on our side to respond diligently to the call of UAP. We just felt so tied up with a lot of work pressure during those years but most especially we still didn't have that conviction of grabbing that license once and for all. We know for sure that both of us should take the board exam together otherwise, we'll not take it at all. It is a must for every aspirant to be aware of what is needed to pull off the board examination. In general, we can say that you got to be prepared physically, mentally, and financially if you really wanted a good chance on acquiring a good examination

result. We are head to toe aware of this since the first try in 2011, but still fall short at the end. When we decided to take the licensure examination last year, we realized that aside from physical, mental, and financial preparations, every aspirant shall be bounded with a purpose, for it will be the foundation of their conviction to carry on whatever obstacles awaits ahead of the journey.

Couple's Journey

For us, we both agree that our "Purpose" should root from the time when we first realized and know for sure that someday we will be an Architect. From that moment, we knew our defini-

tion as an individual. Whatever we do being an Architect is part of our identity as a person and we have to understand that the only way to make it happen is to step up to the plate and take the challenge of the Board Exam to grab the long awaited title as an "Architect". UAP Bahrain couple, that's what they call us after snatching that license as Architects last year. We can honestly say that our journey is not an easy one. Well, for sure it is a common ground for every aspirant. But, we can also say that having each other on this journey makes things a little bit lighter. We make sure that we always motivate each other. It came to a point that we have had competition between us during exams at the review center and put some bet where the loser does the household choirs that weekend. Seems strange but it turned out to be efficient and pushed us to take every review session seriously . One of the things that we remember is that we agree not to take a nap at the same time, so someone could wake the other up to continue the review while the other goes to sleep. In conclusion, we believe that as a couple we have had that privilege to make things work easier for both of us. But of course above all, we have asked for the guidance of God to make us worthy of that license that we long dreamt of having. We offer our success to God, our family, relatives, friends , to the Conspicuous batch, and to the entire UAP Bahrain Organization especially to all of our mentors & facilitators of SPLBE. We thank you for all the support given to us - it will never be forgotten. www.uapbahrain.org

PRO’S & CON’S OF FILIPINO ARCHITECT’S WORKING ABROAD by: Ar. Franny Calaunan, UAP

2. CAREER VERSUS FAMILY It’s never been a happy idea leaving the family to work abroad. This means not seeing your wife and children for the next 12 or 24 months. This also leads to a broken family. I wonder a father’s feeling not to see his son’s first walk nor a mother worries when her daughter is sick. Thanks to the latest technology, iphones & smartphones were introduced. I can have a video call to mama & papa while in the grocery store or while eating my favourite pasta. On another note, most Filipino architects have the privileges for Family visas, keeping their family here in abroad and let their kids study on the nearby schools. 3. KEEPING THE PROFESSION AWAY FROM HOME Filipino Architects are respected and well acknowledge due to our big contribution in the Design & Construction industry. Here in the Kingdom of Bahrain you can find almost if not all companies with Filipino architects or architectural designers employed. I am proud to say we are all behind the making of those high rise buildings we see in the skyline nor have touches of designs in the residential or commercial buildings.

A

s the design construction industry booms, Filipino architects including engineers became in demand specialy in the Middle East because of our professional work attitude & very competitive talents compare to the rest of the world. There have been numerous offers overseas which attract Filipinos to work abroad. The very common reason, looking forward for a better future! But do we ever wonder the pros and cons prior to signing the contract? To have an overview, I have listed a few items as comparison of Filipino Architect’s working abroad and within the Philippine territory, sighting out the advantage and disadvantages based on my personal experiences. Let’s see how many of you can relate. 1. SALARY AND EMPLOYER’S BENEFITS My first apprenticeship was a free service, an allowance of 1000pesos a month at a private architectural firm and a minimum salary range at my last employer in the Philippines. “Im young and underpaid, isn’t Ironic?” It’s devastatingly very low but I admit, I am still on the learning process. Well at least I don’t pay for my training unlike the other professions, right? Filipino architects are attracted to leave the country mainly because of the huge difference on salary rates compare to Philippines, receiving good benefits from the company, a big savings in a very short period of time. That is, if you are a good financial manager, otherwise you will end up like mostly Overseas Filipino Worker’s , no investments and worst, with huge amount of bank loans and credits.

Every time I pass through the road and see a signage “on-going construction” with my 3D visual or I recognise the design with my touches on it, I would brag it to my friends and say “Oh that’s my project!”. But we may have done the biggest projects in the Kingdom, unfortunately the architect’s name isn’t recognized (just an initial in the title block perhapsseniors, if you can educate me on this please!) In the Philippines, drawings & documents are stamped with Architect’s signature and most of the time, names were flashing on the construction billboards. 4. WORK ENVIRONMENT During my apprenticeship program in one of the Architectural consultant firm in the Philippines, most of our projects are by team, composing of 3 to 4 staff in 1 project. I would do the detailing, one will work on the architectural plans, one is into sections and elevations, etc…but of course, the Head Architect does most of the conceptual and whole planning stage. It was a very limited work but I have learned the power of Teamwork, a good camaraderie with colleagues. Ideas are being shared between the group, beating the deadline as one team resulting to a better project output. The head architect is patiently teaching and guiding us on the real construction world. Working abroad means working with people of different culture & beliefs. If there’s a famous Kerala Mafia, have you ever heard the Kabayan’s mafia? Oh you would be lucky if there is on your company otherwise, you are experiencing a Crab Mentality attitude with Filipino co-workers. Sadly but true, strong competition and politics between Filipino colleagues over a position is enormous. We have to be independent and learn things in our own with a limited guidance from the seniors. 5. ARCHITECTURAL SCOPE & LIMITATIONS Depending on the chosen company, Architects will have different jobs and responsibilities. My first apprenticeship was in a government sector whereas we mostly do community (Barangay) projects. I wouldn’t forget my first ever solo project “Park Shed for Mama Mary’s Grotto”. Isn’t that amazing?!

FEATURE have the privilege to see the neighbouring countries without any hassle. Air fare & tour packages are also cost effective because of distance with mostly 1-hour flight. One of my dream is to travel around the world. Riding a camel nearby the Pyramids of Egypt, posing like a Goddess at Parthenon, watching the countdown at New York Time Square or just simply experiencing the sleepless nights in Seattle. Whoa, too ambitious right? Oh well, I may have not experienced that but I already woke up in a cozy hotel in Germany, hopped in a Bullet Train to Belgium for Lunch and a lazy afternoon walk at the avenue of Champs-Elysees ending at the Arch de Triumph in Paris. Thanks to our generous boss for that once in lifetime Business Trip with pleasure.

I was hired as an Assistant Architect on my first job here in the Kingdom of Bahrain, and what I do? Initially I do complete working drawings for a project from Architectural plans to building services, and later on doing my own design conceptualization until the final design stage. Projects such as 2-storey residential villas, 7-storey residential flats or a low-rise commercial building. 6. FULFILLING THE DREAM OF BECOMING A LICENSED ARCHITECT I’m due to my Architecture Licensure Exam (ALE) when I received an offer to work here in Bahrain. Yes, I am one of those who chose abroad for greener pasture. It was a good start but I feel incomplete and have low self-esteem. After more than two years abroad, i decided to go home and took the chance to have the exam. The risk? An unpaid vacation, fast track scanning of all the review books missed on the regular review classes, paying review fees instead of a package tour to Boracay and still staying away from home to concentrate the less than 5 weeks compressed review classes in Manila. Thank God, my name appeared on the Manila Bulletin as one of the passers after a month. Here comes the good news! Thanks to the efforts of the pioneer architects of UAP Bahrain Chapter, they have organized a review centre in the Kingdom to continue the dream of future Filipino architects. No more worries taking a long vacation leave to Philippines for review, less review fees, avoiding the hassle of document processing as the mentors are assisting on the logbook completion and accessible examination centre from nearby GCC country, UAE. (Who knows, next year it will be in Bahrain, too!:-)

8. PERCEPTION TOWARDS LIFE I was 23 when I first stepped out the Philippine island. I can say I’m young and having a few knowledge on the outside world. I am only limited to what I watch on TV’s or read on the news. For the past years being away from home, I learned to be independent, strong & able to handle homesickness. I become more mature in facing life challenges and more confident on my profession, a career-oriented one I may say… And the best thing living on a foreign land, meeting different people with different personalities, learning new culture & beliefs and become more aware on the world itself. I may be away from our homeland at the moment, it is always my dream to go back to Philippines, put up my own Architectural firm and live as what my younger self had imagined…. As a fellow Filipino architect, I am pretty sure, most of us share the same aspirations…

7. VISA ACCESS TO OTHER COUNTRIES We all know how difficult it is to apply visas to our dream country destinations if we are in the Philippines. Not only because of financial constraints but mainly because our passport is limited to few countries that requires visa upon arrival & long days of document processing. If you have a working permit abroad like Middle East, you

s an architecture student, from the southern part of the capital Manila, where the only significant structures visible around are Spanish colonial churches and old capitol buildings, I have always been fascinated by the great structures I see, particularly from history books and architectural magazines. It wasn’t until I was in college when I was able to venture the Makati Central Business District that had me in awe with the sheer size of the structures abutting Ayala Avenue. Now, working as an architect abroad, it gives me an opportunity to see some parts of the world and be more amazed with their culture and architecture, I had only used to run my eyes on, a couple of years back on magazines and books. From the ancient Pyramids of Giza in Cairo, to the modern, simple linear design of the Qatar National Museum by I.M. Pei and to the uber extravagant space consuming design of the Dungdaemon Art Center by Zaha Hadid in Seoul, traveling has given me a glimpse into the surreal wonders of architecture by famous architects. It gave me great inspiration as well as being critical with some.

A three country Asian tour brought me to the bustling city of Singapore, to the blissfulness of Bali, Indonesia and the fun nightlife that is Bangkok. Singapore is one not for a laid back person. Everyone seems to be rushing, but its infrastructure is a model for any developing city or country. You can basically tour the whole island country using the Metro Trail Transit. Nestled in the city center is the famous Marina Bay Sands designed by renowned architect Moshe Safdie, who is also best known for his Habitat 67. Bali, was a total contrast in environment from Singapore, being an resort island. For so long Balinese Architecture has been exemplary with tropical design, with the use of natural materials and elements of nature. It was a perfect get away to refresh someone’s mind. Bangkok was closest to Manila in terms of atmosphere albeit it has not succumbed to the negatives of development. Streets were not as congested as Manila, as there are no jeepneys cramming up the streets and spewing smog in the air. Around the city, the Buddhist temples were prevalent, thus integrating it beautifully to a growing modern landscape.

Visiting Cairo and taking a Nile river cruise for 6 days, stopping by at Aswan and Luxor, feels like taking a dive into the thick Bannister Fletcher History of Architecture book. It was a hair-raising experience when we went inside the Pyramid of Khafra the second largest of the Pyramids of Giza. The passageway was only a half-person in height so basically you have to crawl inside to reach the main chamber. Staying in Luxor and Aswan and witnessing the ruins makes one think, “Whatever happened to this once flourishing civilization? One that was once considered to be the most advanced in the ancient world?” The huge colonnade in the great hypostale hall in the Precint of Amun Rae is a marvel to behold. A column with almost 3 meters in diameter and 4-storey high, by modern standard, with intricate carvings around it. Just how? How were they able to erect such massive columns without the aid of cranes and heavy machineries? A cruise along the Nile River and passing the great engineering marvel, the Suez Canal, is a must to anyone who travels to Egypt.

Working in Bahrain has also given me convenient means of visiting countries within the GCC. With its visa on arrival program for professionals, it has allowed me to spend short trips to the cities of Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, Doha in Qatar and Muscat in Oman. Dubai and Abu Dhabi are living examples of cities thriving in what used to be barren deserts. An ever expanding metropolitan that has become a melting pot of European and Asian culture and architecture. Dubai boasts on representing the tallest building in the world. Doha with its wealth of oil is recently becoming a major player in the global market. One particular structure that caught my attention was the Qatar National Museum, designed by renowned architect I.M. Pei. A piece of art with Pei’s brand of simple yet exquisite design. A structure cladded entirely of marble, using only simple lines to define the structure. A grand structure just from its simplicity, which is reminiscent of I.M. Pei structure I’ve seen in Hong Kong, the Bank of China Tower. My recent travels have brought me to the streets of Seoul, South Korea. Zaha Hadid, the Pritzker winning architect, has one of her projects built in the city; the Dungdaemon Art Center, a bustling art center in the middle of the city. Hadid is notorious for using wide spaces and out of the ordinary shapes in her design. It is in her designs that you wonder which is more important, the design aesthetic or the full functionality and proper use of a particular urban space. Moreover, one may seek tranquility by letting off steam and refreshing the mind and body from the constant pressures of work. Travelling gives you an opportunity to compare places, immerse in different cultures, study developments and take into account the impact of each development to the people’s habitat and manner of living. As an architect, it is a must to familiarize ourselves with the current trend and developments in the Architecture and Engineering field. With the advent of the internet, research can be done instantly, but there is no better way but to experience it firsthand. Walking the streets, staring and touching structures and living in a different city can never be replaced by something like reading on your computer. It gives a better appreciation and criticality on one’s design.

ahrain has a rich heritage of built environment dating back to antiquity that has left many historical buildings and traditional areas. Bahrain's cultural heritage has multiple values that filipino architects should understand- environment, aesthetics, cultural, education and social values. These values translated to conservation of traditional buildings, revitalizations, rehabilitations, restoration and regeneration. Urban revitalization and conservation already been implemented at Muharraq and Manama, Muharraq the Bumahir Development and Manama, The Suq Landmark of heritage can be found on restorations with the refinement of details. If you visit AI A'Ali Shopping Center, there’s an area of the mall you can find the replica of doors, windows, finials, masrabiyas and traditional wooden pattern which had been my masterpiece when I worked as project architect 20 years ago. Characteristic of Bahraini Architecture Traditional House typically has courtyard, sometimes have two, one for men and ladies. Wall consists of thick bricks commonly 600mm to prevent heat. The window kept with small as barrier for heat and privacy. Decorative patterns were used to cover the windows from external heat and privacy as well. Palm trees and local materials were used for ceilings. Bahrain architecture was greatly influence by Islamic religion thus can distinguish when used geometric arches, symmetrical forms and repetition of elements. Aside from recesses and plastered by hand, they also uses wind tower to collect air to cool the house. Seyadi House and Shk Ali House are some of the notable sample of these traditional houses. Aside from houses, Mosques & Temple added the diversity of architectural heritage, The AI Fateh Grand Mosque, listed as one of the grandest mosque in the world with capacity of 7,000 worshippers. The huge dome built on top of the AI-Fateh Mosque is

Different grc pattern were used all over the mosque, flooring, chandelier and teakwood were imported from other countries. Throughout the mosque were olf kufic calligraphy writings. AI Khamis mosque, one of the oldest mosques in Arab World reflects their historical background date to 692 AD, minaret added on 11th century. Most of the mosque uses simple arches with colored glass or sometime lancet arch with mixture of wood. Barbar Temple – A place to worship the god Enki, during Dilmun civilization.

Forts also added the history of architectural heritage of Bahrain. Qalat AI Bahrain commonly known as Bahrain Fort - is an archaeological site & excavations carried out since 1954 have unearthed antiquities from an artificial mound of 12 m height containing seven stratified layers, created by various occupants from 2300 BC up to the 18th century, including Kassites, Portuguese and Persians. It was once the capital of the Dilmun civilization and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. The Arad Fort-was built in the typical style of Islamic forts during the 15th century A.D, Riffa Fort, Riffa Fort-Built as a fort during the reign of Shaikh Salman bin Ahmed AI Khalifa in 1812.

Buildings The new zoning of Bahrain opened up the construction of high rise buildings. It added the skyline of Bahrain Architecture. Today the twin tower of Bahrain Financial Harbour is the tallest, having 53 floor with the height of 260m built on 2009, It is used as commercial building and located at Manama, The second tallest, The Era Tower with 245m, a 50 floor and dedicated as residential building which is located at Seef Area. The third highest, The World Trade Center has 50 floor on 250 m height having a characteristic of sustainable building due to its wind turbine fans. The UAP Bahrain Chapter celebrated its 2nd Christmas Party at the Philippine Embassy here in the Kingdom of Bahrain last December 22, 2014. It was started by a simple introduction of each members, extending their Christmas greetings to everyone, a gift-giving followed by a dinner. Our very own talented UAP Band entertained our fellow OFW with Christmas songs. It has been a tradition for the UAP Bahrain Chapter to organize a Charity program to our distressed fellow OFW at POLO-OWWA. It always feels great to see our fellow Kababayan's laugh and smile despite the circustances they are experiencing and homesickness being miles away from the family. UAP architects believed in the true essence of christmas, Sharing our blessings and to be a blessing to others even in a very simple way.

Theme: UAP Beyond Borders: Empowering Architects Towards the ASEAN Integration Leading the forefront of empowering its members in the face of the ASEAN Integration, UAP architects should be equipped to take advantage of the opportunities and face the challenges of a borderless ASEAN. UAP must transcend borders first, as a community, to help level the field for our architects. It is a rallying message for UAP as an organization and as individual members, to get outside the box and the confines of what we are comfortable with, both geographically and professionally. The UAP in its 41st National Convention aims to ‘go beyond’: To empower architects by raising our voice in the local concerns on the RA9266; To help equip architects by providing means to be in a vantage position among foreigners in the global arena, especially in preparation for ASEAN 2015; To upgrade our level of service as a truly member-centric organization and enjoin members to mutually raise each and everyone to a higher level. It is not about having individual power; it is about being empowered as an organization of Filipino architects. Essentially, the idea is to provide architects with what they need to be confident, competent and competitive in the arena of growing global professional collaboration.

Conference Themes The Conference will address a range of critically important issues and themes relating to the ASEAN Integration The following main theme and sub-topics will be highlighted in the 3 day convention.

Funny side up

THE TYPICAL PINOY By: Ar. Eric Urdaneta, UAP It is always amazing how Filipinos always find time to insert personal things amidst busy schedule and tight deadlines, with a swipe of the finger on gadgets and a peek to friends and families on the desktop is more than enough to keep the Pinoy engine going. Definitely it’s a reflection of happy and socially inclined Filipinos are. We always seek optimism in life to counter homesickness and stress; indeed we are true resilient people.
