Experience the Nueva Alianza Community T

he two-hour ride from Xela to the Nueva Alianza Community is a great experience because of the varying scenery. When driving from Quetzaltenango to the Nueva Alianza Community, the landscape changes from forests with common trees to palm tree forests. Several small communities in the area of Nueva Alianza produce coffee et cetera. However, these communities are not as spectacular as the Nueva Alianza Community, which has a rich history. Near the community is a place where many years ago an army was trained to go and fight in other countries. When this army was dissolved, lots of its soldiers took to the forests and set up rebellion groups or started working on farms. The Nueva Alianza Community is situated in the mountains of El Palmar and consists of 40 families who are all working on the coffee farm. The fifth-generation plantation workers, who are part of the cooperation, are an extremely generous group of people, who will welcome you with open arms into their community. The community is managed with a broad sense of democracy, and within its structure there are a Women’s Committee, an Educational Committee and a Board of Directors. They all work together to make sure all members of the community enjoy the same rights. The community lies in a 300-acres plantation of organic coffee and macadamia trees, where large tracts of natural tropical forest have been preserved as well. Even though the farm is situated in a spectacular environment, seeing the workers running it makes it even more spectacular, as it is really hard work. Moreover, knowing that they had problems with the previous owner, who took off with their money, and that they had been severely affected by the civil war, it is quite amazing they still want to work on the farm to make their living. During the tour by one of the locals, the two different ways of producing coffee and macadamia are explained, i.e. the traditional and the economic way.

Although the traditional way is more expensive, the production time is identical to that of the economic way. As the tour guide will explain, the trees normally produce 50 bags of 50 liters of acadamia and only 20 bags of coffee. However, because of problems they had with the trees, they think that the trees will only produce half of that. As the guide explained to us, they don't get much money for the coffee beans, so the farm also produces organic gas. This gas is derived from the coffee and macadamia. They produce an oil which is converted into organic gas. At the end of the tour you can buy their organic coffee and macadamia, which have a very nice and sweet taste. Apart from this, you also have the opportunity to visit the cascading waterfalls located in the area. A walk through the plantation leads you to the waterfalls with their crystal clear water, edible and medicinal plants, and breath-taking views of the volcanoes Santa Maria (3,772 m) and Santiaguito - an active volcano which erupts, on average, every hour. Moreover, you can eat and sleep at the farm with the local families and experience their way of living in a unique way. The income they get from tourists visiting the community will be used for educational and community needs. Besides that, there is the possibility to visit the cascading waterfalls located in the area. A walk through the plantation will bring you to the waterfalls with crystal clear water, edible and medicinal plants, and breath-taking views of volcanoes Santa Maria (3772m) and Santiaguito - an active volcano which erupts, on average, every hour. Moreover, you can eat and sleep on the farm with the local families and experience their way of living as never before. LA BIBLIOTECA

MEXICO HUEHUETENANGO

Chancol – Chiantla – Huehuetenango – Guatemala

HONDURAS

GUATEMALA

Indeed, for two years, the Grupo de Jóvenes library has been open 3 mornings a week, thanks to young volunteers and people from the Unicornio Azul taking turns as “librarians”. The site for the library was provided for by the community. The books and educational games were mostly donated or funded by friends, clients or other contacts, with two significant deliveries being made by the organization “Child Aid”. Today, the library boasts some 2,000 titles. Adrenalina Tours was one of the major book donors. As the entire project was voluntary by nature, it represented a great show of commitment and participation by many young people. However, this had several drawbacks: - The rotation system of the “librarians" limited their knowledge of the available equipment, its use and the needs of the users. - The young age and unequal schooling levels of the "librarians" had an impact on the services offered to the users for their specific needs. - The voluntary nature of the shifts limited requirements for presence, order and punctuality. Thus, in 2013, the goal for the library of the Youth Group is hiring a librarian with the following profile: high school degree, indigenous, personality suited for the position, preferably bilingual Spanish-Quiché. The aim is progressively extending the opening hours of the library to 6 half days a week. Because of this, the challenge is now twice as big: not only financing the salary of the librarian, but also setting up simple local activities to get up and running again as soon as possible. For this reason, Adrenalina Tours, as part of its social commitment, has pledged to the purchase of buiding materials for the library, thereby helping the Chancol population (1,226 habitants) and the four nearing villages, totaling some 10 to 12,000 people. Most potential visitors are in primary or secondary school.
