Purlieu Odyssey Dwelling "Transitional dwelling to unite the world" This pod was developed to provide refuge to youth age transitioning out of the foster care system. This intricate collapsible design is created to be affordable and can be transported using only a bicycle. By detaching the structure from the ground to free itself from permanency we can liberate the structure from a costly union to one plot of land. The Dwelling pod does not rise up from the ground as a fixed wooden construction, but unfolds as an airborne form. When a ventilation system is activated, the Dwelling pod swells into shape like a modern age textile floweret. The pods structure is a lightweight inflatable exoskeleton that provides rigidity while doubling as a protective skin.

The project was a 2016 Woodbury architecture student project of four. The team included Anthony Roddrigez, Helmer Douglas, Aaron Castaneda and "I" Jose Delgado. Working together the project was built for the Bowtie parcel as part of the Agency for Civic Engagement (ACE) Spring Design Studio. "The primary goal of the studio is to explore the potential of low technology, high impact design interventions as a means of better understanding community needs along this future public park site in Northeast Los Angeles."

In Motion, In Space BIO-MIMICRY

"Science itself is dependent on repeatable and MEASURABLE occurrences and is a system which allows for the determination of logical ideas of causality in the world" - Stephen Turk on William Forsythe's 'One Flat Thing.' This project explored the roles of mapping and notation in the realm of spatial representation. as a media we used stop-motion photography, as pioneered by Etienne Jules Marey and Eadweard Muybridge, in the analysis of the intricate algorithmic choreography to be found in William Forsythe’ s One Flat Thing.better understanding community needs along this future public park site in Northeast Los Angeles."

FROM SOUND TO FORM UNDERSTANDING YOUR ENVIRONMENT THROUGH SOUND

"Acoustics follows materiality as a complement to presence. As an example, a person whom is blind folded and standing in the middle of an open room can still be aware of the span of a space." By understanding sound in relationship to the built environment I hope to enhance the architectural experience beyond sight. When engaging sound during the design phase we can design to activate one's focal auditory field, we can distinguish direction for the blind, and we can enhance a sense of place within one's own mind before ever activating visual sensory. By combining the study of Don Ihde and Kenneth Frampton I hope to open new possibilities, and shift the way we view architecture or in this case hear architecture. With the aid of digital design/ digital fabrication we can now design beyond our 2 dimensional dependent visual field and replace it for a spherical build environment. Philosophers such as Frampton[1], have theorized that there is an underlying connection between materiality and human presence. Frampton believes that the human presence is the link between the physical and nonphysical world. In his theory of the "Visual and Tactile," both visually and other human senses should take a part while designing. The correspondence between all senses makes architecture deeper and one of a kind. This concept supports the usage of all materials which marks

17

are moving beyond the crutches of sight to develop architecture. We are developing via our tactile range specified to sound which in return will evoke a wider range of human perception towards the development of architecture. Experience from seeing, hearing and feeling things from everyday life has made it possible for a person to have dimensional awareness and yet without even realizing you have the potential to see things through sound. Ihde states "I also note that I can switch my focal auditory "ray" from one sound to another without even turning my head. I can discern the sounds from the window to my right and from behind the irksome whine of the stove fan motor. My auditory field and my auditory focusing is not isomorphic with visual field and focus, it is omnidirectional. In the shape of the auditory field, as a surrounding thing, the field-shape "exceeds" that of the field-shape of sight". [1]Beyazl", Mehmet. ""Six Points for an Architectural Resistance Frampton"." Sound and Terracotta AMBIENT SOUNDS "people have the ability to filter through sound" According to the research conducted by Don Ihde[3], Chapter 6 "The Auditory Field", he writes of his experience during a presentation lecture and a recording. It was at this time that he noticed a differences from being present for an audio speaker to the time after when he reviewed the record from his audio device . Ihde observed how a person's perception and focus can be directed on a single person in the auditorium. Present at the lecture he was oblivious to the surrounding sounds such as the tapping of shoes, the shuffling of papers, and the breathing of someone next to him, his recorder caught it all. Playing back the lecture you can distinctly hear everything he states because the recorder doesn't have the ability to decipher the hierarchy of focus. In this conductive study, he learned that people have the ability to filter through a plethora of sounds from that of which capture their attention leaving the person unaware that ambiance sounds even exist.

HIERARCHY OF FOCUS "The understanding of the hierarchies of a persons focus threw the use of materials." STUDY FORMULA Programer + Media = Output PROGRAMMER is sound source, refection and deformation. MEDIA is the material manipulation that causes sound deformation. OUTPUT is sound perception.
