Prof. Liz McCormick

The ambition of this work, Gradients, is to design a facility that will serve the research needs of the UNC Charlotte Arts and Architecture community and the city of Charlotte more broadly. The building will maintain as its core objective to ensure the minimum carbon footprint possible, that is, net-zero, and shall aim to produce its own energy for consumption. It shall be constructed of reused and recycled materials – materials which themselves can eventually be disassembled and re-used – while sustainable practices in all phases will ensure a product that respects the natural, ecological and agrarian legacy of the site.

The project will endeavor to tackle key Environmental and HumanCentered goals in effort to interrogate the notion of gradients in time, material, form and thoughtful deployment of programmatic conceits with an eye to the future and with a respectful nod to the past. A modular approach to construction and space making will allow future occupants to define and redefine their own uses.
