IV ULI HINES URBAN DESIGN COMPETITION

INDEPENDENT PARTICIPATION | January, 2022

The Fold, has as its primary objective to foster Justice and Equity in Old Oakland and the City of Oakland more broadly. That is, to reunite a city that has been divided economically, racially and socially by an Interstate Highway system, whose goal was (at least unofficially) to red-line the city and segregate its population.

Through innovative re-appropriation of land parcels which were acquired by the city for the construction of the I-880 freeway, we will Fold the freeway back into the community, by removing a nearly onemile stretch of it; effectively bringing the community back into The Fold – back into the conversation, and encourage inclusion and access for ALL people. The removal of the physical barrier serves as a symbol of the removal of long-standing social and economic barriers to access, particularly for BIPOC, lower-income, and unsheltered segments of the population.

HOTEL WANATABE| TOKYO, JAPAN

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO III | SUMMER 2021

In this project students were asked to design an all-in-one, modular Hotel, Capsule Hotel, and traditional Japanese Onsen (or bathhouse) in the heart of the colorful Harajuku district of Tokyo. Designs responded to constraints of pour-in-place and precast modular concrete systems. The hotel is to serve athletes of a specific sport, in this case Olympic Wrestling, during the Olympics and then continue to serve the local community thereafter.

The goal here is to analyzes the Olympic sport of Wrestling to develop geometries rooted in its motion and kinetics. Wrestling maneuvers are translated into formal elements relative to motion that represent the sport conceptually and facilitate engagement with the sport and its athletes within the space(s), both public and private.

Furthermore, notions of public and private space are challenged, as transparent borders between rooms are placed at bathrooms. Glass can be frosted by digital control.
