IT´S TIME TO CELEBRATE Being mainly a digital media, we highly depend on the visual engagement of the fashion editorials we publish. In this issue, we are featuring 6 stories being produced by QP, with the immense participation of all the teams involved, plus a cover story produced by HOLLY PARKER and her team. Leading our production teams, we find returning photographers such as THOMAS LOUVAGNY and REX YU. Nothing gets us more excited than featuring the works of professionals who have worked with us for some time now. But there´s something else that thrill us: new photographers coming on board! We are extremely honored to having the opportunity of working shoulder to shoulder with renowned fashion photographer ANDREW MACPHERSON, whose works have been published in VOGUE Paris, VOGUE Italy, ROLLING STONE magazine,… just to name a few. Not only he has shot one amazing fashion editorial for QP, but he has also been in charge of doing the interviews with actress JESSICA PARKER KENNEDY and with fashion designer (and wife) JOANNA HADFIELD. But he is not the only addition to our magazine. We are very excited about publishing, for the first time, fashion editorials from KRISTINA MCMANUS, TJ MANOU, NINA HAWKINS and our cover story photographer, HOLLY PARKER! ou’ve said before in a previous interview with iHeart Radio that you weren’t so much into pop music, in its prime of the 2000’s, as you were with older classic rock. What did you grow up listening to and how do you believe that’s influenced some of your earlier music? My biggest influences growing up were The Beatles and Elvis. I was obsessed with the rock and roll of the 50’s and 60’s. That music has had a clear and definite impact on the music I make.

influenced your work? My life always influences my art but no specific struggle. I was in a major car accident that completely changed my life so I’m sure a lot of those emotions find their way into my work.

amazing body transformation! Tell us about your work out routine. What advice can you give our readers about getting started? My best advice on how to get started on changing your Body and Mind is…JUST GET STARTED!! No excuses There are no secrets and no fast track. It is all diligence! Nothing is for free. No diet plans or protein shakes will get you there. You just have to wake up early and put in your mind that you are now a different person. This is what you do now. It is not a diet or six-week plan. This is just you and these are your behaviors now. It’s 100% mental.

What was it like growing up as a child star? How did that influence your high school years? I grew up very close to Los Angeles and started in the entertainment industry at a very young age, so my high school years were pretty much the same as they are now.
What was it like attending one of the most prestigious art
schools, Orange County Performing Arts? Any nostalgic memories? I only attended OCHSA for about three months before I realized I had absolutely zero interest in anything I was learning in that school.
Tell us about developing your own record label Backyard Records.
Being able to release records on my own is an absolute dream. I get to stay in complete control of every creative aspect of my work. No one to tell me what songs should or should not go on my albums or when or what to release. I can connect directly to my fans and exchange ideas immediately through social media, My fans are basically my A&R now!!
My absolute dream is to be in the studio one day with Paul McCartney.
Are there any inspirational quotes or mottos you use when
times get tough? Our minds become magnetized with the dominating thoughts we hold in our minds and these magnets attract to us the forces, the people, the circumstances of life which harmonize with the nature of our dominating thoughts. Basically, whatever the mind can conceive the mind can achieve and the mind becomes whatever it thinks about most.
What can we expect from Drake Bell in the future?
I have a lot of music I am finishing and releasing within the next six months and a lot of touring to come!!

“I was the singer in an all girl band...�
“Life is a dance, dress to perform!” AM: Joanna, tell us how you started out making clothes. JH: I got my first sewing machine at five, which was also when I started dancing in our local church in Auckland, New Zealand. I loved making outfits to perform in, so that was how I began. By the time I was a teenager I was obsessed with construction. I’d take my clothes apart so I could reconstruct them to understand how the different pieces came together, and to see if I could do it better. AM: So clothes and performance have always been intimately linked in your life? JH: Yes, I was the singer in an all girl band in school, and I was in an all girl dance group. Of course I made t-shirts and arm bands to sell at our shows. Then I joined a local hip-hop dance crew called Triple 8 Funk. We came in fifth at the International Hip-Hop Championships. I came to America to dance on Broadway, but my passion for making clothes ended up taking me on a ten year voyage of commercial fashion. My first brand was Trailer Boutique which was totally focused on denim. One day when I was out selling it, the owner of a store asked me if I’d also produce the dress I was wearing. I didn’t feel it fitted in with the denim line so I created a second label called Park to make simple and easy to wear dresses. I did most of my manufacturing in Indonesia and was sold in boutiques all over the world. AM: So how did Joanna Hadfield Atelier come about? JH: After over a decade of commercial fashion I wanted to focus on my passion for dressing performance, so I walked away from those businesses to start Joanna Hadfield Atelier. The atelier’s manifesto is “Life is a dance, dress to perform!”
“So many style trends have come from LA...” AM: Now you’re an established Los Angeles designer, what does that mean to you, and what do you think about the history of style in LA? JH: Since the beginning of movie making in Hollywood LA has been giving the world style icons. There are so many it’s impossible to list them all, but as costume creators of course Edith Head is an absolute idol of mine. I love Michelle Clapton, her work on Game of Thrones is incredible, Trish Summerville for the Hunger Games and of course Arianne Phillips for everything. So many style trends have come from LA, from big hair heavy metal to hip-hop to the skate and surf stars like Stussy, Vans and Quicksilver who birthed what’s become the Supreme look. Then there’s the serious couturiers like Richard Tyler, Rick Owens, and now Tom Ford is here. AM: Is there a good design community in LA? JH: Yes, absolutely! There’s so many incredible new talents in our circle, and we all support each other. I especially love Laura Basci, Oscar Olima, Jamie Lee Major, Raven Kauffman and Morgana McNelis. They are all making unique and really beautiful things. AM: Where do your ideas come from? JH: The fabric. Sometimes I’ll have a fabric for months or even years before I cut into it. The tasseled jacket in this story started out as a woven knit from Italy. The knit itself wasn’t that great, but I was obsessed with the yarn, so I took it apart and spent ages straightening out the threads to make the fringe. Once the jacket was finished I realized the ends needed more definition, so I called up my girlfriends to come help and we had a sharpie party the night before the shoot.
AM: Who are your greatest influences? JH: If I had to pick just one for sure it would be Alexander McQueen, but there are so many who have moved, inspired and delighted me. I just love seeing great work done well. AM: You gave up commercial fashion to focus on style, what do you think about fashion today? JH: Fashion is so disposable. It’s been redefined by ‘fast fashion’ which has turned the garment industry into the second biggest polluter on our planet. From the sweat shop to the land fill, or worse the ocean, with no care, pride or passion. Fashion’s descended into corporate greed fueling a cheap fix for a junkie consumer culture. AM: Verty true, sadly. So what are your style goals and desires? JH: I want my pieces to stay in my clients wardrobe for a life time. That’s why I put so much emphasis on taking the time to create and fit unique pieces from scratch. I want each piece to be a work of art that make the wearer feel like every moment of their life is special. Life is a dance, so dress to Perform! AM: What was the inspiration for the looks and pieces that you created for the story on the following pages? JH: When I started both making clothes and dancing as a kid, Jem & The Holograms was one of my favorite TV shows. The outfits, the hair, the make up and being in a band with your besties was all so much fun. Most of the outfits in this story started out as experimental performance pieces that I’ve been playing with for ages, so this story allowed me to finally finish them. Once our wonderful model Erin put them on, she totally channeled Jem.

O
ver the course of 18 months, Macy sought out musicians and producers that could bring forth an album that was both invigorating yet relaxing, different yet relatable. The result is an album featuring a rich blend of talent, from singer Meghan Trainor to Gary Clark Jr. on guitar wailing with a reminiscent tone of legendary musician Prince. Tell us about your latest album “Ruby.” I’m really excited just for people to hear it. I just think people will love it. I think people need it because it is so fresh. Everyone is kind of locked into this one melody and this one beat now… I’m excited to give (my listeners) something new. Even if they don’t like it, it’s fresh. How did you end up collaborating with singer Meghan Trainor on the track “Sugar Daddy” for your new album? I was at my producer’s house and he was working on my album. But he was also finishing up her album and she stopped by one night. And she came downstairs and just kind of jumped into the session.
You worked with Evan Ross on the video “Sugar Daddy” that pays homage to Billie Holiday but also Evan’s mother Diana Ross who played the role of Billie Holiday in Lady Sings the Blues. What was that like for you? Evan Ross is amazing! We are really friends and all. I think he really wanted to honor his mom… he couldn’t wait to show her the video. It was cool. We had a good time. Speaking of Billie Holiday, what influence did her singing have on your career as an artist? She was a big influence… I’m a big fan of hers and I know a lot about her story and her music. I learned how to sing by listening to her records. You’ve been touring lately, both in Europe and the United States. What has the response been to your music in Europe? Europeans are more open and a lot more flexible. There is a lot more music that you can access in Europe and really switch it up; there is a lot more crossover. In the U.S., it is a lot more laid back. But I do sell more records in Europe than I do in the States.

AM: Jessica, thanks so much for coming to spend a day at play with us here at QP. Firstly I have to ask, what made you want to become an actor?
JPK: When I was seven, at summer camp, I did a performance of The Jungle Book. I played both Mowgli’s little girlfriend and the wolf mother.
JPK: My mom took me to a lot of plays when I was a kid, so that made a definite impression, but the real ah-ha moment happened when at twelve I saw Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet. It was so stunning and made such an impression on me that I became obsessed with both Shakespeare and the art of film after seeing it.
AM: So your first role was actually a double header?
AM: It was so stylish, I love what he and his wife do together, they’re a magic team. So what was your first experience on stage?
JPK: Yes! It was a lot for a seven year old, but I did it, and I remember it being really exhilarating. After that I took drama in junior high and in high school, and that when I got really hooked. After I graduated from high school I went into a two year theater arts program that was super demanding but also really fun.

AM: Did you play anybody that you loved while you were there? JPK: I was in a really amazing play called Unity 1918 about the Spanish flu that killed 55,000 people in Canada. I played the niece of a mortician. My uncle passed away and I had to take over his business in a small town where everyone was dying. It was a really transformative role as I had to do a lot of research for it. I went to the library to learn all about the process of embalming, and I watched a lot of Six Feet Under, which was an amazing show. AM: IMDb says you’ve played over 40 characters in the last dozen years, which ones really impacted you? JPK: My favorite character was Max on Black Sails. When I booked it I was terrified of that role, I was like, “No. I can’t do this!” But I like being scared. It pushes you when you have that kind of terrified “I can’t do this” feeling. The adrenaline makes you better. I loved that role and that character, I miss her every day!
AM: I’d never thought about missing a character that’s become a part of you. What do you like most about Nora West-Allen, your current character in The Flash? JPK: She’s bubbly and really keen with tons of energy. She has a terrific relationship with her father, which is something I didn’t get to have growing up, so I’m getting to experience that vicariously through her. It’s actually quite a cathartic experience for me, so I’m very grateful to her for that. AM: Talking about growing up, obviously, you’re Canadian by birth, but what’s your family heritage? JPK: I just did 23andMe, so I can say with certainty that I’m 26% African, 17% Irish and then everything else you could possibly imagine. A bunch of European heritages and even some Yakut, which is apparently an ancient Siberian tribe, so I’m just a big mutt. AM: Mutts are the best, I’m one too. Was your mom the African or the European side? JPK: She’s the European heritage. It’s my father’s side that’s African.
AM: The result’s a great mix. Changing gears, what are your favorite social media platforms?
Infectious, it can really inspire and fire you to get through the hard days on set knowing they’re eventually going to be there with you.
JPK: I don’t have a favorite social media platform because, to be honest, I really don’t like the artificial pressures and consequences of social media. If I had to pick one I guess it’d be Instagram, but I don’t like posting as much as I like following people that I’m genuinely interested in. ] AM: It’s becoming a very important part of the business of being an actor. What’s your take on that?
AM: I saw a clip of you on line being ambushed by three guys with video cameras who were trying to get you to sign pictures. You patiently autographed endless prints while giving them nice mini interviews. Most people would’ve just swatted them away but you were so gracious with them.
JPK: It’s turned our craft into a strange popularity contest. People get jobs all the time because they have more followers than someone else, but that should never be the reason you get cast for a role. The argument is that more followers should mean a bigger box office draw, so it may make financial sense, but creatively it rarely means the person most suited for a role will get it. I thought my days of popularity contests were over once I left school, but now it’s happening all over again, and honestly it’s kind of traumatizing. AM: You’re a veteran of the Comic-Con circuit. They’re huge events that draw massive crowds, but what are they like from your perspective? JPK: They’re kind of crazy and a lot of work, but I really enjoy doing them because I love meeting real fans, and Comic-Con has the most enthusiastic fans ever. Most of the time they know more about the part you’re playing than you do in many ways. They pay attention to every little detail and never miss or forget anything. Honestly their passion and excitement is
JPK: I’m not bothered that much by it as it’s not a part of my everyday life. I know they aren’t really fans, they just want you to sign a million pictures so they can sell them. It’s really just a part of the job so I’m cool to roll with it to a point, but I know a lot of actors that wouldn’t give them the time of day. AM: Being gracious and humble shows great character. JPK: That’s the way I was raised. If I wasn’t polite my mom would just slap me across the head, not literally but figuratively. My mom is a very intimidating woman when she wants to be. She was a teacher for 35 years so she has that authoritative streak. I was raised to be gracious and thankful. I just don’t have that snitty, big headed, entitled thing inside of me, it’s just not in my DNA. I’d love to play a character that’s like that, but certainly not in real life. AM: So not only did your mum indoctrinate you with the joys of the theater, but she also really kept you in line. JPK: Absolutely! AM: Clearly it paid off, bravo mom! by Wash Westmoreland (from the Academy Awardwinning Still Alice) and written by Wash Westmoreland, Richard Glatzer, and Rebecca Lenkiewicz, based on the lives of renowned French author, “Willy” (Golden Globe Award nominee Dominic West of The Affair) and his wife, Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette (Academy Award nominee Keira Knightley), who had moved from the rural France to the intellectual and artistic splendor of Paris, where Willy convinces Colette to ghostwrite for him. She pens a semi-autobiographical novel, about a brazen country girl named Claudine, that becomes a bestseller and a cultural sensation. Colette and Willy become the talk of Paris, and their adventures go on to inspire
additional Claudine novels. Colette’s subsequent fight over the creative ownership of these books defies gender roles and drives her to overcome societal constraints, revolutionizing literature, fashion and sexual expression. Director Wash Westmoreland and actors Keira Knightly & Dominic West beautifully weave us through the saga of their marriage, vibrant love life, and, most importantly, Colette’s journey to finding her artistic voice, independence and ownership, as a creative individual. The film’s themes are interlaced into a memorable odyssey with a superbly vibrant cast. Colette’s character is engaging, witty and relatable, while the costume and set designs are meticulous, stunning and glamorous.

We may actually flip the calendar to a new year in January, but after August makes soup out of our productivity and that first cool, cloudy morning breaks the punishing cycle of summer, it’s impossible to deny the feeling that fall is a new beginning. Here in California, it’s subtle but kind of magical. Your whole life was about to become a remake of “Desperately Seeking Susan,” but instead of searching for Madonna, you’re on a madcap traipse through Los Angeles desperately seeking Air Conditioning, going a little crazy, still wearing that goddamn leather jacket and then… ahhh, relief. Couldn’t have timed it more perfectly; Earth really knows what she’s doing. Thanks, Earth. There’s also that “back to work” vibe instilled in us from our school days and September and October are always some of my most productive months. Thankfully, the music scene in the Entertainment Capital of the World is on the same page: year after year, my favorite releases seem to turn up in autumn and this year Angelenos have some particularly interesting up and comers to keep an eye on. It’s a new season, time for a new playlist! And while here in LA things won’t look all that different without the barrage of fall colors or gusty weather other parts of the country might be getting, here it’s how it feels - and sounds - that counts. Here’s a shortlist of Los Angeles local acts that are sure to make the most of the season, not to mention freshen up your fall and keep you inspired.

I love a good vocal forward pop explosion. This trio originated at USC and has released a couple singles recently with infectious melodies and really satisfying vocals production; look for their name popping up on the calendar for your favorite east side clubs.

HEALING GEMS
There’s something at once deeply nostalgic and also quintessentially Angeleno about this group. The tongue-in-cheek, Chicano flair on their new EP, Feathered Serpent, blends hipster aesthetic with always-sunny beats and melodies.

There is a deep sexy vibe to the everything this trio puts out. You can taste the Silverlake… in the best possible way. Check out singles “My Style” and “Let That Money Talk.” In addition to solid singles out this year, they’re already blowing up on commercials and, I hear, they even play free shows every so often.

The latest from this LA workhorse quartet is their album Adult Contemporary, a mesmerizingly selfaware collection of alternatingly soothing and heartbreaking stand out tracks. I hope this is the album that breaks this crew into the stratosphere of popular music. They are ready.

If you don’t know this Silverlake magician by now, do yourself a favor. Singles have started to break onto the national scene and it seems like he is constantly on tour, but I get the feeling the best is still yet to come in a major way for this up and comer. You won’t regret a moment of his album, Vital (out earlier this year), and you haven’t lived until you’ve experienced his laws-of-physics-defying vocals on his cover of “Boys Don’t Cry” live. Goosebumps. Now there’s a chill in the air.

very now and then you need to get away to a place where you can relax and find yourself. A place where you are comfortable and feel welcomed. An oasis within the bustle of the city. A wonderful place to escape or for a little relaxation with no stress is the iconic Sportsmen’s Lodge. Right in the middle of Studio City and on the main drag of Ventura Blvd, you can find this island of peace and suddenly you are in a totally different environment. We recently went to the Sportsmen’s Lodge to shoot our Drake Bell story and the minute we drove into the parking lot the stress I normally feel going to a location fell away. This may seem like a small reason but I even like their parking lot. They do not charge for parking and the lot is large and easy to park in. For me, this was a relief as I was expecting my crew to arrive and we would have eight cars to park and equipment to unpack. So, believe me, to be able to park near the entrance and have no one hassle me about unloading or paying was the beginning of a great day. This feeling continued throughout the whole shoot. The atmosphere was comfortable and relaxing and everyone was helpful and generous. Instead of wanting to leave at the end of the shoot, I found myself laying on a chaise lounge by the pool and enjoying the evening and a nice conversation with Robert, our creative director.
The Sportsmen’s Lodge is a very iconic Hollywood location with a rich history. It has been a popular spot for celebrations, dinners, and gatherings since the 1880s. Clark Gable, Humphrey Bogart, Bettie Davis, Lauren Bacall, and even John Wayne and Lucille Ball would hang out there to mingle with friends and fish in their trout ponds. By 1945 it was considered the fun and relaxing place to hang, eat and fish after a hard day at the studios. Over the years there have been changes but the atmosphere has always remained cool. I remember coming here in the 70’s to swim in their Olympic sized heated pool and hang out with friends and today it is still a popular place for recording artists, musicians and bands to stay while on tour. Recently it is becoming known for its fun pool parties every weekend during the summer. But for me with my fond memories, I see it as an oasis where I can relax and be myself and no one is going to hassle me. The hotel sits on eight prime acres and is an unexpected surprise as you turn off the busy Blvd and enter a different vibe than the street you just left seconds ago. If you are looking to get away for an easy and fun weekend and don’t want to have to travel far or spend a lot, but still want a comfortable, spacious room, good food and to feel that you are part of Hollywood, there is nowhere better than the Sportsmen’s Lodge. A true hidden gem that is well worth finding.

A place so scary that amazing writers, actors, and producers were prosecuted and blacklisted and accused of being communists for no real reason. Friends turned on friends and no one was free to create or express themselves without fear. McCarthyism destroyed lives and careers, especially in Hollywood. If we want to live in a free nation and be safe we need to protect our constitutional rights and we need to protect the right of free speech and due process. Without due process, anyone at any time for no legitimate reason can be accused of anything and be ruined, terrorized and bullied.
