Navigating the fast-paced world of rodeo and its unique terminology and jargon can sometimes be tough. Whether you’re a seasoned rodeo enthusiast or a newcomer to the arena, understanding the language of the sport is essential for fully immersing
RODEO PRIMER
Barrier: in timed events, a line at the front of the box that the contestant and his horse cannot cross until the steer or calf has a head start, usually marked with a rope and a flag so the timers can see it drop and start the clock
Box: in a timed event, the area a horse and rider back into before they make a roping or steer wrestling run
Breaking The Barrier: in the timed events, if the rider leaves the box too soon - failing to give the animal enough of a head start - he is assessed a 10-second penalty
Dally: in team roping, each roper, after throwing his loop, wraps the loose rope around his saddle horn - dallies - and the two ropers move their horses to face each other, pulling the ropes taut to stop the clock
Drop: in rough stock events, the way a bucking horse or bull may lower its front end suddenly while kicking out in back, creating a more difficult ride; in timed events, the way a calf or steer may lower its head to avoid a catch
Flags: because rodeo’s timed events are measured in tenths of seconds, judges in the arena drop flags to signal the timers to stop the clocks
Flankman: a cowboy or cowgirl who works in the bucking chutes, adjusting the flank strap around the animal before the ride; the best flankmen and women are familiar with each individual animal and know exactly how much flank to give each animal to encourage optimal bucking
Flank Strap: a soft sheepskin or Neoprene lined strap placed in the area where a human’s belt would go, it encourages the animal to kick out behind itself rather than rear up, which provides a safer, slower rodeo
Go-Round: many rodeos have more than one round of competition; each is called a go-around, and all cowboys entered in that rodeo compete in each go-round unless there is a semi-final, final or progressive round
yourself in the action-packed excitement of the rodeo circuit. So saddle up and get ready to learn the ropes, as we break down the key terms and phrases that define the thrilling world of rodeo.
Hazer: in steer wrestling, the cowboy who rides on the right side of the steer from the contestant to make sure the steer runs straight
Hooey: the knot that a cowboy uses to finish trying the calf’s legs together in tie-down roping
Mark Out: in the bareback and saddle bronc riding, a cowboy’s feet must be above the point of the horse’s shoulders when the horse’s front feet hit the ground - if so, he “marked the horse out,” but if not, he “missed him out” and the ride is disqualified
Nodding: in the roughstock events, a cowboy nods when he is ready for the gateman to open the gate and the ride to begin; in the timed events, a cowboy nods when he is ready for the calf or steer to be released from the chute and get its head start
Pickup Men: two mounted cowboys who help riders dismount, release a bucking horse’s soft flank strap, and escort bucking horses and bulls to the exit gate after a ride
Piggin’ String: in tie-down roping, the small rope used to tie a calf’s legs together
Pigtail: a piece of string attached to the barrier that breaks if a timed-event contestant’s horse exits the box too soon, not giving the calf or steer enough of a head start according to PRCA rules
Riggin’: a suitcase-style handhold customized to a rider’s grip and attached to a molded piece of leather that is cinched, with a pad, around the horse’s girth
Roughstock: the bucking horses and bulls used in bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and bull riding, usually bred and raised for the job
Slack: excess entries at some rodeos may be scheduled for preliminary (slack) competition, usually before the rodeo opens

In 1987, college was only a dream for many students. The Association began a scholarship program for graduates from Texas high schools. In the years since, the program has assisted the educational pursuit of more than 170 students. Recipients of the scholarships must participate as members of 4-H, FFA, and/or FCCLA programs, demonstrating the Association’s anchored belief in these important youth programs.
In March of 2002, the Association continued it’s tradition of serving West Texas youth by developing the San Angelo Stock Show & Rodeo Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Agriculture drives our nation and has a profound impact on youth, deeply ingraining hard work and developing life skills. In 1987, the Association began a scholarship program to benefit the youth of Texas and supporting higher education. The scholarships awarded have assisted the educational pursuit of hundreds of high school students. Through the San Angelo Stock Show, scholarships are awarded based on work inside and outside the classroom identifying well-rounded and driven individuals. Students receiving scholarships participate as members of 4-H and FFA programs, demonstrating the Association’s anchored belief in these important youth programs. Recipients of these scholarships will attend an accredited Texas university, college, or technical school. All scholarship applications must be turned in by March 10!
In 2021, the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo Foundation is proud to award 19 scholarships to outstanding applicants. These recipients are awarded $8,000 each (payable $1,000 per semester for eight semesters) with one student receiving the $16,000 Kermit Wendland Scholarship. The winner of the Kermit Wendland scholarship will be notified during the scholarship presentation at the Stock Show and Rodeo Annual Membership Meeting.
The Kermit Wendland Scholarship was named in April of 2014. The idea was brainstormed by the former presidents of the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo Association, who wanted to award something special in honor of Kermit, who has been a part of the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo for over thirty years. Kermit is currently serving as the Operations Director for the Association and is the heart of the association. He volunteered with the cattle shows prior to becoming a full time staff member. Kermit serves numerous roles, but is a firm believer in the livestock show program. Thanks to a private donation, a scholarship was established to honor such a wonderful, Christian man.

This is the fastest selling ticket in Pro Rodeo! There is good reason for that. The contestants in each event are made up of the top ten from the current 2024 world standings. The first go round, each contestant goes head to head and the four with the fastest times, or best scores, advance to the second round. From those four, the one with the best ride or run in the second go round takes home $7,500 in each event! The total purse is $100,000 for the single performance. You watch the best of the best compete for big money and the title of Cinch Chute Out Champion, all in one night!

ALPINE & MARFA : RANC H & RODEO : PAST & PRESENT
Sul Ross State University in ALPINE is rightly proud of its status as the Birthplace of College Rodeo. The first-ever College Rodeo was held at Sul Ross in 1945 and The National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) was officially formed here in 1949. SRSU took home the first three national titles and has since won 26 individual and 9 team national championships.
Under the leadership of current Rodeo Coach CJ Aragon, the SRSU Rodeo program has grown dramatically and is attracting top talent.
Unlike the NCAA, NIRA athletes are not barred from professional competition, so it may come as a surprise to learn that competing college athletes can simultaneously be top-ranking pros. In 2022 and 2023, SRSU’s Tristen Hutchings made college rodeo history as the first Bull Rider to win two NIRA National Championships in a row – and at the same time ranking as the 3rd best Bull Rider in the world under the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) standings.
Other SRSU athletes with stellar pro rankings include Bareback Rider Cole Franks and Bull Rider Ky Hamilton, who have each ranked 4th worldwide with the PCRA.
The SRSU NIRA Rodeo is so worth watching that for the last two years the Cowboy Channel
has broadcast the event live from the S.A.L.E. Arena in Alpine. Catch the 2024 NIRA Rodeo in Alpine September 26-28. Keep track of this and other Alpine events—like August’s Big Bend Ranch Rodeo—at visitalpinetx.com
The ranching way of life that Texas is famous for came to MARFA in 1885, but the region has been home to agriculture for centuries. Native peoples and Spanish settlers long occupied this land of stark beauty and demanding challenges. Marfa retains a deep connection to the complex and unique blend of cultures of old West Texas, including Trans Pecos ranching.
Located in the Chihuahuan Desert and part
of the world’s largest Dark Sky Preserve, you can experience unmatched high desert landscapes and grasslands with stunning night skies. Much like Marfa itself, Cibolo Creek Ranch offers modern luxury combined with regional food and historic adventures. Take a guided horse tour for the day, overnight, or cross the border into Mexico with West Texas Adventures. Enjoy some of the best BBQ in Texas at Convenience West, a 2024 James Beard Outstanding Restaurant semifinalist. Check out fine duds from 6Whiskey or spruce up your casita with decor from Pronghorn Marfa. Cold beer and hot bands await you at The Pony - the latest incarnation of the infamous Lost Horse Saloon.
If a change of pace is what you’re after, book a stay in the historic Saint George Hotel and explore historical museums preserving the long traditions of ranching and settlement in the region. Visit the plentiful art galleries and foundations inspired by the open spaces, contemplative silence, and natural beauty of the region. Learn more at visitmarfa.com
