Walltown Round House Situated in the heart of Northumberland National Park, along the line of

the historic Hadrian’s Wall. The brief was to design a visitors centre for the park, as well as a youth hostel to accommodate hikers walking along the wall. The proposal incorporates materials and concepts inspired by the beauty of the natural landscape which surrounds it. A key feature of the design is the central congregation chamber, which takes the form of a natural stone chimney, with a roaring fire at its centre, relating back to the primitive ideals of shelter, warmth, story-telling and star gazing.

Part I Placement: RHP Architects During my 19 month placement at RHPartnership Architects I had the

opportunity to work of a range of different scale projects and building types, in areas such as: laboratories, education, accommodation and master planning. I was given 1 to 1 formal training on Revit and continued to hone my skills within this area, acting as a in-house BIM co-ordinator on a 9 month schools project. I was responsible for assembling planning drawing packages, visuals for public consultation meetings, feasibility studies, updating GA’s, BREEAM assessments, digital and physical modeling.

Angel of the North Visitors Centre A live project devised by Gateshead Council was to provide a new visitors

centre to service The Angel of the North, the iconic sculpture produced artist Anthony Gormley. The proposal had to form a connection with the sculpture whilst remaining subservient to it. The final proposal drew inspiration from the site and sculpture to produce an architecture which was a quiet reflection of the angel, nestled amongst the woodland setting. The centre provided the much needed amenities for the site, as well as opening up a series of breath taking views of the angel.

A Home for Haiti Haiti is one of the most disaster stricken and poorest countries in the world. The brief was to create an affordable, robust and easily assembled housing unit for Haiti. The design was a lowtech solution which could be integrated within the current context of Haiti. A bamboo construction suited the scheme as it was a cheap, strong, flexible material, which could easily be grown and worked by unskilled laborers. The design drew inspiration from the traditional forms of architecture within Haiti, so as to not seem a foreign concept when introduced, making it more likely to be adopted by the local people.

Experiments in Happiness Experiments in Happiness was a live collaborative art project, which formed part of the annual cultural event, The Late Shows. The project was to work alongside artist Amy Lord in developing a series of interventions within a disused building, which related to peoples different associations with happiness. The project ran for just over 2 months which culminated in a 2 day public event where members of the public were free to explore and leave feedback about the show. The project proved invaluable, seeing the process from start to finish, from conceptual design to self-construction and public dissemination.

The Mow Creative Arts Centre Located next to the banks of the River Tyne, the proposal was to establish a vibrant new arts centre for Newcastle, whilst improving connections between the quayside and the city. A series of elevated walkways were introduced to forge new links and address the issue of connectivity. The project was influenced by Newcastle’s industrial past and the infrastructures which remain, such as coloured steel cranes, bridges and warehouse typologies. The buildings pitched red roof was inspired by the warehouse form and became the architectural feature which accommodated all the different elements of the scheme.
