Contemporary culture confronts us with an overwhelming quantity of information. We have become nomads wandering through vast information networks. Architecture, as articulated surface, has the capability of filtering and curating information.

The annex, a private technology center, is composed of a series of thin membranes placed in between programmatic and circulation layers. The geometry of the planes is regulated by the expansion and contraction of the floorplates in relation to programmatic constraints. Holes are trimmed into the places as they intersect vertical planes. The existing exterior of the Pittsburgh Athletic Association performed as asocial filter between the private members and the general public. The annex revises this theme : the patterned filter surfaces of the annex intersect and disrupt the vertical surfaces of the existing building to permit visual transparency.

Architecture communicates meaning directly to the body of an occupant. But what specific qualities of a surface elicit these sensations, and how can we make judgements about the aesthetics of contemporary architecture? The sensations that architecture arouses are not limited the language used to interpret it. This project is directed towards the limits of inexpressibility in language : sensation. The intention is to locate the moment that language fails and matter elicits direct sensory response. This is an architecture directed towards pre-cognitive response. In Cognitive Psychology and Neuroscience, the sensations that we observe in others are understood to activate our own internal representations of bodily states. We have an embodied empathetic response to matter. When these mechanisms are fully understood, the relationship of surface to human emotions will no longer be relative. A surface is elation. A surface is anguish. From the experience of architecture, we can experience catharsis.

Overscaled minimal surfaces of fabric and aluminum are assembled into a folly structure. The expressive materials absorb the light and vaguely demarcate enclosure. The pavilion performed as the centerpiece for the annual design exhibition in Helsinki, Finland. The theme was carried through the exhibition as a set of planes suspended from the ceiling between exhibitors. As a modular system, it was fabricated locally and assembled on site within a day.

BRIDGE FILTER
The hybrid program required both enclosed museum spaces and sustainable utility within a single structure. Rather than concealing the ecological function, the process of water filtration is exposed on the ceiling surface of the museum galleries. Light is filtered through the exposed tubing that carries liquids from the river below. The stages of the material process (pretreatment, flocculation, sedimentation, and sand filtration) are expressed in the variable patterning of the perforated metal skin. Each structural steel frame is unique as it modulates to program and experiential conditions. The galleries are experienced as continuous compressions and expansions of space. The ecological function of liquid filtration is given material expression in the fluid form and surface patterning of the museum.
M. FACTORY
Installation art at the Mattress Factory is fabricated internally. Artists take residence with the desire to physically incorporate the location into their work. The initial program was re-interpreted to include temporary workspaces as well as additional gallery space. By editing the entry sequence, the artistic process is exposed within the attached workspaces as performance. The wooden envelope is derived from the process of folding. Spatial complexities arise from the relative modulation of the surface and the existing building. With each fold, spaces are vaguely defined. The building can be read as being in the process of transformation.
