12.14.2012 LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION FOR JOSEPH KOON To Whom It May Concern, I am writing on behalf of Joseph Koon, who worked as an intern in our office during the summer of 2010. Joseph is a talented individual that has a strong creative drive and perceptive intellect. He demonstrates a passion for weaving the complex systems of architecture together to create comprehensive, wholly considered projects. Joseph has a remarkable, good-natured ambition to excel and is highly self-motivated. It was a pleasure to work with Joseph at our office and he quickly understood and contributed to the project to which he was assigned, a multi-family habitat in Portland, OR. Joseph worked independently to develop the project, from site analysis, circulation+massing concepts, to detailed schemes and renderings. He excelled at documenting his thought processes with succinct diagrams illustrating the conceptual approach, massing alternatives, and how the resultant building design evolved and performs. Joseph's representational skills were integral to our decision-making process and he helped make significant advances in the design work over the summer. Joseph is dedicated to his work, wellorganized, culturally informed, committed to research, and he is productive - consistently creating well-considered drawings/diagrams/3D model/rendered representations of multiple design options. Joseph has the active intellectual curiosity, drive and inventive spirit to take full advantage of any opportunity afforded him. We fully enjoyed Joseph's presence in and contribution to our office - he is considerate, energetic and I am pleased to offer my recommendation. Please let me know if you have any questions or need further information. Sincerely,
Lyn Rice, AIA, LEED AP Principal, Rice+Lipka Architects
PARCEL
The 750 square foot apartment units are stacked and
shifted to define an internal void. Variation in plan is produced as each apartment is rotated around a centralized utility core.
Circulation is carved from
the volumes and detailed in raw plywood. The entire assemblage is clad in a diaphanous trellis to condition
light and support plant growth. The schematic design resolves tight mechanical systems, square footage,
and circulation constraints into a singular spatial experience.
Project was completed in collaboration at Rice + Lipka Architects in New York.

LABORATORY
The lab building is conflicted by the historical character of the City University of New York campus and the technological requirements of its program.
The building utilizes poche to integrate mechanical
systems into circulation. Public movement is filtered through large stone volumes placed between private lab volumes and a centralized atrium. Within
these masses, radiant floor heating is conditioned by solar hot water collectors on the roof. The enclosure is composed of operable, prismatic louvres.

necessary utilities for the area’s developing arts community. The renovations include a sawtooth ceiling
with an integrated photovoltaic array and an escape
stair to satisfy egress requirements. The project was presented to the community through a town meeting and included a business and event plan.

MARIMEKKO
Furniture dressed in seasonal Marimekko Fabrics
create an atmosphere of color and pattern. The
set is developed from a single geometry scaled to become a stool, table, and bar table. Each piece was cut from a piece of cardboard which was then folded and wrapped in the fabrics.
‘Folding Fabrics’ was published in the Finnish Design Yearbook.
