Media Annex

Contemporary culture confronts us with an overwhelming quantity of information. The media annex is composed of a series of articulated membranes to filter the behavioral information of its occupants. The interior of the adjacent Palazzo becomes accessible as the surfaces disrupt and intersect its facade. The curvatures are regulated by the expansion of the floor plates in relation to programmatic constraints. Circulation elements are placed between these layers to produce an experience of dynamic, spatial porosity.

Filter Bridge

The process of water filtration is integrated into an experience of smooth space. Light is filtered through the exposed tubing that carries liquid from the river below. The pretreatment, flocculation, sedimentation and sand filtration of the water is expressed in the continuous modulation of the steel frames. A continuum of spatial compressions and expansions are enhanced by the gradually altering quality of light. The project was refined through an iterative process of formal experimentation.

CUNY Laboratory

The lab building is conflicted by the historical character of the City University of New York campus and the technological requirements of its program. The building utilizes poche to integrate mechanical systems into circulation. Public movement is filtered through large stone volumes placed between private lab volumes and a centralized atrium. Within these masses, radiant floor heating is conditioned by solar hot water collectors on the roof. The enclosure is composed of operable, prismatic louvres.

Mattress Factory

Installation Art at the Mattress Factory notable for its site specificity, temporality and the inclusion of the viewer. Artists are granted residency in the building to incorporate aspects of the interior into their work. The proposed annex provides studio space where the process of the artists is exposed as spectacle on the exterior. In this way, the viewer directly engages with the artist as a performer. As if folded, the form of the enclosure appears to be in continual transformation. The architecture remains incomplete.

Faux Bois

Steel is wood. The barge was to be renovated as a gallery space for historical artifacts. As if made of wood, the steel envelope decays with a gradation of perforations.

Memorial

Deleuze, Gilles. Francis Bacon : The Logic of Sensation. New York : Columbia University Press, 2003.

In Francis Bacon’s paintings, the body is not representational but ‘goes through intensively real deformation. As fluids escape, the body discovers the materiality from which it is composed.’ To evoke the material memorial of lost relatives, the surfaces of the memorial are in constant change. The wooden skin is clad to a structure of steel frames braced into the landscape. Visitors descend and progress through a series of spaces elevated above the stream. Over time, the substance of the wood cladding decays into the water.

Plaza Edit

Sitte, Camillo. City Planning According to Artistic Principles (1889). Translated by George R. Collins and Christiane Crasemann Collins. London: Phaidon Press, 1965.

Camillo Sitte, in ‘City Planning According to Artistic Principles’, emphasizes the significance of the plaza in defining distinct urban experiences. Through the manipulation of surrounding surfaces, historical spaces can be refreshed. The project strategically layers public program around the edges of vacant lots along Pittsburgh’s waterfront. A series of landscape elements, structural follies and surface articulations incite moments of intensity along the promenade. Each plaza is differentiated by its scale, programmatic content, and relation to pre-existing forms.

v

Housing Parcel

The schematic design resolves tight mechanical systems, square footage, and circulation constraints into a singular spatial experience. The 750 square foot apartment units are stacked and shifted to define an internal void. Variation in plan is produced as each apartment is rotated around a centralized utility core. Circulation is carved from the volumes and detailed in raw plywood. The entire assemblage is clad in a diaphanous trellis to condition light and support plant growth. The project was completed in collaboration at Rice + Lipka Architects in New York.

v

Art Factory

The iridescent building volume is sited within a vacant property in a distressed Pittsburgh neighborhood. The facility expands the adjacent rowhouse and provides necessary utilities for the area’s developing arts community. The renovations include a sawtooth ceiling with an integrated photovoltaic array and an escape stair to satisfy egress requirements. The project was presented to the community through a town meeting and included a business and event plan.

Arbitare Exhibtion

The aluminum and fabric structure was the centerpiece for the annual Arbitare design exhibition in Heslinki, Finland. As one moves around the structure, the layered figures elicit different expressions. The light-absorbing materiality is carried through the exhibition as a set of suspended planes placed between the displays of exhibitors. The system of modular, minimal surfaces simplified fabrication and assembly. The project was completed in collaboration at Sotamaa in Helsinki, Finland.

Marimekko Folding Fabrics

Furniture dressed in seasonal Marimekko Fabrics create an atmosphere of color and pattern. The set is developed from a single geometry scaled to become a stool, table, and bar table. Each piece was cut from a piece of cardboard which was then folded and wrapped in the fabrics. ‘Folding Fabrics’ was published in the Finnish Design Yearbook.

Thesis: Clinic

Elaine Scarry, in ‘The Body in Pain’, describes our inability to reflect and intellectualize when in pain. These powerful, internal sensations demarcate the limitations of language. In a medical setting, patients are left powerless without the ability to communicate. A selection of words used to describe varying intensities of pain are distributed Scarry, Elaine. The Body In Pain : The Making and throughout the corridors of the hospital. At these moments, the patients are confronted by colorful resin topologies. Unmaking of the World. Oxford University Press, 1985. Through the sequence of differentiated spaces, the patient experiences catharsis.
