From exploring my city I discovered that living accommodation is getting more and more expensive, with some young adults having to share so that they can afford a small studio room. I sensed that jobs for the working classes are becoming difficult to find and began to think that for poorer people Hong Kong is getting more difficult to live in and only the rich get richer in Hong Kong. From this conclusion I wrote the following statement and created my images around it:
Living in a city where shelter is luxury
All the photographs are mirrored and evenly divided to evoke the idea of a divided city: the Chinese government trying to limit and reduce Hong Kong’s freedom and democracy, while the people protest to try and retain it. The mirrored architecture of the building shots creates a jewellery-like effect which implies the idea of luxury and a sense of distance and floating in the air; creating a symbol that represents luxury as something that is dream-like and so unattainable.
