M.I.R.A.

Research Lab Campus INTEGRATION DESIGN STUDIO professor | James Rose year | Fall 2017 type | Group Project partners | Dylam Palmer_Kathryn Lamb competition | AIA MID/BIF Sustainability Award

M.I.R.A., modular inclusive research architecture, located in Cherokee Farms, Knoxville Tennessee, is geared toward the company of Ernst and Young. The program is designed for four tenants, three geared towards the inhabitants of the research campus and the other being for the workers of Ernst and Young. Research, exclusivity, and showcase are just some characteristics to describe EY, and are three key design tactics taken into designing M.I.R.A. With a focus on using local products and lower construction footprint, wood is utilized on a module of 20’ by 20’, with other materials like glass, concrete, and steel wrapping around the structure acting as a protective shell, promoting transparency between the workers and visitors of the research campus, and allowing views and natural daylight to penetrate into the two major zones of research and office program. This piece of architecture also showcases LEED characteristics like water collection used to irrigate a green roof system and raised planters, PV panels to collect power for lighting fixtures, and utilizing a geothermal pump to efficiently cool the spaces through an under floor distribution system. This building, along with the rest of the research campus promotes Cherokee farms as a lead research campus promoting values that could influence the future of design in Knoxville.

When thinking of the best way to represent this creationg of a modular system I created an animation. It displays the process of started from a grid originating from the site and applying layers of design on top of it. When someone is occupying this space they are emmersed in a connected MODULE that they may not even realize they are apart of. This modular system allows for free flowing spaces and for them to be rearanged with each new tenant occupying the space. The INTEGRATION of these spaces allow deep connections with the people and allow

for unique experiences in the RESEARCH labs. The form follows this modular system as it subtracts at ground level allowing for a relationship of invitation to be established with the communal plane. Igress towers were established to serve not only as shear support but visual holderrs to the timber lab spaces. A moment of relief was desired in our project, so a semi-private courtyard was established with a orientation awat from the public realm while also crating a public view with the ARCHITETCURE.

With new technologies coming out every day I am always pushing myself to explore new means of representation to bettwer my designs. VIRTUAL REALITY is one of the fairly young pieces of tehc that is steadilly improving and can now be practiced with models ranging in complexity and detail. It serves as a very beneficial tool when bridiging the langauge barrier between architect and client and can convey a feeling that the 2d realm of drawings cannot attain.

To be able to create a relationship between urban context and the wilderness is a very delicate challenge. I wanted to use urban design to enhance the wilderness experience, and to be able to create connections between people along the South Loop. By analyzing existing site matrices and ecosystems, I integrated an urban matrix of technology that enhances the overall experience. People come to IJAMS to escape the urbanism. That is why a secondary factor of my design is that it will not obstruct one from seeking that escape. Instead it will serve as a tool always at ones disposal in times of need or interest.

A & A Building

The location of this design serves as a prime area to be an anchor to a multi-use trail at IJAMS Nature Trail. With our location being next to multiple ecosystems, I wanted to allocate program to mingle with these ecosystems to create unique experiences in each piece of program. The major premise behind this design was to allow people not an escape, but rather a moment of DETATCHMENT from the Urban Wilderness. This detachment is accomplished with a goal of creating what used to be an unattainable perspective of all of IJAMS. While traversing through the horizontal program one will gain educational knowledge of the sites history

and what it is today. The program then shifts focus upon entering the vertical tower. Every level utilizes new technology to enhance the users experience and to really immerse oneself in a technological space of extreme representation. This IMMERSION juxtaposes a key component of the design and that is the top floor lookout. There is no elevator on this level as it is to be an uninterrupted view of all of IJAMS. This transition between an inward focused program into a completely nature oriented space gives the user a sense of appreciation for not only what is there today, but also a better understanding of its history and purpose.

AGGLOMERATION School Administration Building Programing & Design professor | Tricia Stuth year | Fall 2016 type | Individual Project

CONTEXT. Lenoir City is a city that has a rich history in the mill industry and Tennessee River. However there are no cultural references to either of these aspects in Lenoir. The city is a developing area with some changes that will revitalize the downtown area and create more public interaction between residents of Lenoir City. Currently there are resources being put forth towards a park and continuation of the green-way. To create something that ties the history and current culture together would be very beneficial as the citizens of Lenoir City would be able to engage and learn about its history and the School Administration Building is the perfect opportunity to make that happen.

TRANSPORTATION. In terms of transportation, the most favorable means of public transport would be cycling. In the book Human Transit it is stated the average person is willing to walk a quarter of a mile to get to a destination, and the average cycling distance on a bike is about 2.64 miles. There are a variety of zones in the quarter mile radius of the School Administration Building. The most prominent ones are the homes. While these people may be able to walk to the site, if one extends out that boundary it is favorable to bike. With the green-way being extended and adapted, people will have more pleasurable means of cycling. With the schools

being in range of the cycling radius, it is possible for students/kids to bike to the site from school or their homes. However, an aspect that is missing from the roads of Lenoir City is a bike lane. This limits people to either take the greenway or ride on the sidewalk.

AGGLOMERATION. The major aspect

missing in Lenoir City is an area that ties together its history, culture, and people. The best way to establish this idea is to adapt the School Academic Building into a Urban Ceter that can agglomerate all aspects of Lenoir. To become an area that has multi purpose and multi use program and spaces. Also, to be able to tie in to all areas being developed such as the park, the green-way, and City Hall. This will not only attract more people to the downtown area of Lenoir but also allow occupants to engage with Lenoir City’s very own history and culture.

building were severely lacking in size, so an increase in capacity was made so that it could accomade a large number of occupants in the program at one time. as a space that evokes multiple experiences throughout at the day as it is positioned in the atreum space. It also serves asa an area where students can silently read after grabbing a cup of coffee from the cafe or a quiet study session with friends.

So when meetings ae not taking place, horizontal panels can turn open allowing fluid sequence into the space from the reading room. The conference table is made up of breakaway tables so that it can split into multiple tables that be used for prsonal use by occupants.

gram of the site. With the overhand no longer needed from the bank, it left an oppurtunity for a unique experience. This experience that is created is an outdoor art gallery. The horizontal panels from the interior are replicated and are constructed as a case so that one could put artwork in. This would allow a programable piece to be able to be accessed at all times of the day. The horizontal pieces again can be closed off for private events or opened to allow free flowing movement.

REFLECTIVITY.The previous bank had installed glass that was nearly 100% reflective from the outside of the building. This provided privacy for the building witch may serve benefitial to a bank, but for an area thats supposed to be a gatherig place for the public it serves as a deterant. It makes the building feel lifeless in cold when one cannot see any kind of life happening within the building from the outside. All the pedestrian can see is the reflection of the streetscape behind them. This creates a disconection with the buildings interior space.From the inside occupants perspective, they can clearly see the outside pedestrian and the surrounding context arround them.

TRANSPARENCY. What i suggest is not

complete reflection, but also not complete transparency. Instead create a percentage of reflection enough for people to see life inside the building and create connections, but to not lose the moment between a reflection. Instead one would be able see one’s own reflection inside the space pf the building creating a false scenario inside the form of the building. This would also open up interaction between the occupants of the building and the occupants of the street. This creates a much more inviting scenario as it not only shows life, but it also piques the curiosty of people only experiencing visual interaction.

WEIGHT. The building serves as a weight

to hold a very important corner. The corner is a moment where increased moments of sequence patterns meet. While cars travel down Broadway there is a road that runs ajacent that runs through the site connecting the highway to a back road. This creates a safety concern as there is no major differentiation between parking and street. I proposed a change in materiality to emphasize a change in space. Also, with Lenoir being on a grid system, most residential zones are NW of the site, so when people travel from their houses or school they will at some point interact with

takes on multiple cubic forms. The forms serve as a means of breaking up the form of the building while still being connected. These forms are purposed for igress stairs, a vault, and office space. An idea I have cultivated is to manioulate these forms of cubism. The space is switched from being an additive form to being subtractive and transparent. This will provide a visual connection into the building instead of it being so private and rejective. Thus making a more inviting scenario with the people occupying the surrounding context.

Having a camera on me at all times has become such a part of my life now that I carry it around as much as I do my phone. Photography has always been one of my favorite art forms. Not only can it capture light in a single moment, it can also tell a narrative one might not have realized until further inspection. There is a story to every person and everything in the world. However there are too many for our eyes to capture at once, so I rely on my camera to capture these moments so that I may delve deeper into them. Photography allows me to create frames of my life, and I decide these frames out of moments of curiosity. While walking through an art gallery one would stop at a piece that grabs their attention. Well in my everyday life I apply this to my interaction with the world. Studying in architecture has opened up so many stories I had never seen before. While inside of a piece of design one experiences these amazing emotions and feelings that the architecture emits unto them. However sometimes these emotions only last a moment. I have been developing my photography skills and have started applying them to capture these short moments of a design that the designer perhaps wanted to achieve.
