Hail to the chief inspector: Uzo Aduba stars in Shondaland White House mystery series

Shonda Rhimes is back in the White House.

After the success of her hit political drama “Scandal” and her stately English period romance series “Bridgerton,” Shonda Rhimes and her prolific team are tackling a new project — and this one is taking some cues from famed mystery author Agatha Christie. “The Residence,” a new, eight-episode locked-room murder mystery set in the White House, premieres Thursday, March 20, on Netflix.

While the series falls neatly under the Shondaland banner, which also includes the two aforementioned series as well as “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Station 19,” “Inventing Anna” and more, “The Residence” is created and helmed by “Scandal” staff writer and “For the People” creator Paul William Davies.

Excited for the release of his new series starring Uzo Aduba (“Orange Is the New Black”), Davies told Netflix’s news site, Tudum, that “’The Residence’ is honestly a lot of things. It’s funny, it’s suspenseful, it’s clever, it’s totally farcical in places, it’s genuinely romantic in others.”

Regarding the series’ plot and overall vibe, “The Residence” channels the Christie-era murder mystery and its recent descendants, such as Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out” (2019) and “Glass Onion” (2022) films, as well as the Hulu/Disney+ sensation “Only Murders in the Building.”

Insofar as the official logline is concerned, Shondaland and Netflix have offered the following description: “132 rooms. 157 suspects. One dead body. One wildly eccentric detective. One disastrous state dinner. ‘The Residence’ is a screwball whodunnit set in the upstairs, downstairs and backstairs of the White House, among the eclectic staff of the world’s most famous mansion.”

Aduba shines in the lead role as consulting detective Cordelia Cupp, who is as awkward as she is intelligent — which is to say, very. Referred to by Netflix as “the most sought-after investigator in the world,” Cupp is “known for her unexpected humor, relentless pursuit of truth and sharp eye for human behavior.” It bears noting that Cupp is also an avid birder, demonstrating unmatched patience to accompany her keen attention to detail.

Joining the “Mrs. America” actress on screen is, as Aduba puts it, “an amazing group of phenomenally talented, good, good, good human beings who are generous, thoughtful, fun, gifted, talented [and] just awesome.

“It was straight jams every day with our cast,” Aduba later added. “We loved coming to work every day.”

More specifically, Aduba shares her screen time with “Fresh Off the Boat” and “WandaVision’s” Randall Park, who plays skeptical FBI agent Edwin Park. Agent Park is assigned to work the state dinner alongside Cupp, but does not exactly jive with her methods. All told, however, the pair’s conflicting views work wonders to balance each other’s biases throughout the series.

Additionally, potential viewers learned very early in the show’s marketing that Giancarlo Esposito’s (“Breaking Bad”) character, White House chief usher A.B. Wynter, is the reason for the plot. The victim whose death kickstarts the series, the role was originally tied to “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” actor Andre Braugher, but was recast following the actor’s sudden death in December 2023 (the series has been in production since 2022 and was postponed due to the industry strike).

“I couldn’t be prouder and more honored to be stepping into Shondaland’s ‘The Residence’ for someone that I loved and respected and cherished,” said Esposito of Braugher following the recasting. “To be afforded the opportunity to create in his honor with this incredible team extends the depth and breadth of his legacy through all of us who loved him so dearly.”

“Good American Family” (March 19)

Told from multiple points of view, as a means to explore issues of perspective, bias and trauma, this compelling drama is inspired by the disturbing stories surrounding a Midwestern couple who adopts a girl with a rare form of dwarfism. Superstar singers: Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga and more celebrated at 2025 ‘iHeartRadio Music Awards’

Together, artists and industry professionals alike join to celebrate the most-played musicians and songs on iHeartRadio stations and the iHeartRadio app throughout 2024 — and offer fans at home a peek of what’s to come in 2025 — during the 12th annual presentation of the iHeartRadio Music Awards, broad casting live from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, Monday, March 17, on Fox.

In a show featuring thrilling live performances, ex citing guests and surprise collaborations, iHeartRadio offers fans the opportunity to acknowledge winners throughout a wide array of genres and categories, in cluding Song of the Year, Artist of the Year and World Artist of the Year; and fan-voted categories such as Fa vorite Soundtrack, Favorite Broadway Debut, Favorite K-pop Dance Challenge, Favorite Surprise Guest, Favorite Tour Tradition, Best Lyrics and more.

This year, “Espresso” singer Sabrina Carpenter and, keeping with tradition, superstar Taylor Swift (“The Tortured Poets Department”) lead with a whopping nine nominations each across all categories. Swift will certainly be in attendance — and will grace the stage — as her worldwide, years-spanning Eras Tour will be recognized as “Tour of the Century.” Following closely behind these powerhouse pop singers are Kendrick Lamar (“Not Like Us”), Post Malone (“I Had Some Help”) and Morgan Wallen (“Cowgirls”), who earned themselves seven, six and five nominations, respectively.

While her new song “Abracadabra” rocks radio stations across the country, Lady Gaga will also attend the night’s event, being presented with the 2025 iHeartRadio Innovator Award.

“Beyond creating music and performances that have inspired the world, Lady Gaga is an outspoken activist, philanthropist and supporter of many important issues including mental health, LGBTQ+ rights, HIV/AIDS awareness and body image issues,” a statement given by iHeartRadio reads.

Additionally, singer, songwriter and producer Mariah Carey (“Fantasy”) will be honored with the 2025 iHeartRadio Icon Award, as she remains one of the bestselling artists of all time with over 200 million records sold worldwide and 19 No. 1 singles (per iHeartRadio).

While celebrating many of our favorite artists, this year’s event will also pay tribute to the resiliency of Los Angeles, as its communities rebuild following January’s devastating wildfires. iHeartRadio has teamed up with the Annenberg Foundation, making it known that all contributions made to FireAidLA.org will be distributed to nearby communities in both short- and long-term initiatives.

Celebrating music, musicians and the resiliency of Los Angeles, the iHeartRadio Music Awards airs Monday, March 17, on Fox.

Braise,

blanche and backstab: Top chefs fight for the throne in new culinary competition

The biggest names from the culinary world enter a game unlike any other as the epic new series “House of Knives” premieres Tuesday, March 18, on Food Network.

Hosted by Scott Conant (“Beat Bobby Flay”), this brand-new competition asks its contenders to utilize strategy, survival skills and, of course, culinary talent, as they battle for a seat on the “House of Knives” throne — a coveted seat earned by the game’s best players.

“Each episode names a weekly ruler based on challenges that reflect the contenders’ personal stories, food influences and cultures,” explains Food Network. While one claims fame, the least successful chefs are banished from their kitchen-size kingdom, to be replaced by a new, surprise culinary legend. In the end, the player who lasts the longest earns themself a $100,000 grand prize.

In the series premiere, Conant invites six of the world’s most prestigious chefs to his culinary battleground, where skill and strategy are praised in equal measure.

Who are the six in question? According to the network, Anne Burrell (“Secrets of a Restaurant Chef”), Shirley Chung (“Tournament of Champions”), Kelsey Barnard Clark (“NFL Tailgate Takedown”), Poppy O’Toole (“Cooking with the Stars UK”), Viet Pham (“Food Network Star”), Jonathon Sawyer (“The Best Thing I Ever Ate”), Martel Stone (“Wildcard Kitchen”), John Tesar (“Top Chef”) and Claudette Zepeda (“The Cook Up with Adam Liaw”) are all set to appear in this first season. The exact contenders, however, have yet to be announced.

Regardless, these six chefs (in whichever combination they appear) will be asked to create dishes that highlight a signature ingredient, each to be judged by the Culinary

Council — Judy Joo (“Korean Food Made Simple”) and Marcus Samuelsson (“On the Rise with Marcus Samuelsson”). The winning chef will become the very first to sit on the “House of Knives” throne, while the least successful are banished before the next round. Afterwards, a game-changing advantage is given to the chef who brings the most spice to the kitchen.

“The House of Knives arena is all about extreme talent and gameplay — only the strongest contenders have a chance at the crown,” claims Betsy Ayala, head of content, food, for Warner Bros. Produced by theoldschool, “House of Knives” premieres Tuesday, March 18, on Food Network.

BEST IRELAND MOVIES

John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara in “The Quiet Man”

“The Quiet Man” (1952): The ultimate Ireland movie in the eyes of many, director John Ford’s classic stars John Wayne as a returnee to Ireland who’s determined to capture the heart of a lass (Maureen O’Hara) despite her brother’s (Victor McLaglen) interference. Turner Classic Movies presents the film as the second half of a St. Patrick’s Day double feature Sunday, March 17.

“Finian’s Rainbow” (1968): This Francis Ford Coppola-directed musical is loaded with the charm of Ireland, along with the tuneful work of Fred Astaire, Petula Clark and Tommy Steele.

“Barry Lyndon” (1975): Stanley Kubrick’s scenic drama stars Ryan O’Neal as an Irishman who weds a widow (Marisa Berenson), seeking to succeed her late husband aristocratically.

“My Left Foot” (1989): Daniel Day-Lewis earned his first Oscar playing Christy Brown, who overcame physical challenges to make his mark artistically.

“The Crying Game” (1992): Even many years later, no one should give away the twist of writer-director Neil Jordan’s drama about an IRA member’s (Stephen Rea) relationship that has a background in tragedy.

“Angela’s Ashes” (1999):

Based on Frank McCourt’s autobiography, this drama recalls his childhood, with Emily Watson and Robert Carlyle as his parents.

“Bloody Sunday” (2002): Paul Greengrass used many of the techniques that have made him a top action director (“Jason Bourne”) in this unsettling dramatization of Ireland’s civil war.

“Evelyn” (2002): Pierce Brosnan is excellent as a maritally abandoned family man fighting to keep custody of his children.

“Once” (2006): The Dublin love story of two people (Glen Hansard, Marketa Irglova) is traced musically.
