Main, Stephen McGann and Annabelle Apsion in “Call the Midwife”
When it comes to long-running scripted British television series, several titles rush to mind. From popular sci-fi/fantasy series “Doctor Who,” which boasts 40 complete seasons and several specials since its premiere in November 1963, to ongoing ensemble cast series like “EastEnders” (40 seasons), “Emmerdale” (54 seasons) and “Coronation Street” (66 seasons), it is clear that the U.K. has a lush culture of appointment television, which remains alive and well to this day.
Another series that appears to be joining the U.K.’s ranks of long-running televised content is “Call the Midwife,” the medical period drama that began its run on BBC One in 2012. Headed into its 14th season on Sunday, March 30 — a number of seasons that would border on astounding in nearly any other market — “Call the Midwife” is available to watch on PBS or to stream via the PBS Passport streaming service. For those who hold a BritBox subscription, Season 14 of “Call the Midwife” has been available since its U.K. premiere in January.
“Call the Midwife” focuses on “the nurses, midwives and nuns from Nonnatus House,” reads the official PBS description, “who visit the expectant mothers of Poplar, providing the poorest women with the best possible care.” The series is based on the memoirs of the late British nurse Jennifer Worth, who practiced in one of East London’s most impoverished areas in the 1950s. And while the BBC series began its first season set in 1957, 14 seasons later the women of Poplar are ushering in a new era: the 1970s. According to PBS, in this newest season, “chaos erupts as the Isle of Dogs bid for independence. Amid the turmoil, the midwives work tirelessly to keep Nonnatus House running while addressing complex social and health challenges.”
While looking ahead to the excitement and challenges of portraying another new decade within the series, Thomas reflected that “we are a family behind the scenes, on the screen and in front of the telly, and I’m thrilled that we’re all heading into the 1970s together.”
To call the cast of “Call the Midwife” a “family” is hardly an overstatement, as much of the cast has returned year after year to tell the many harrowing medical tales of the women in the community of Poplar. From attending to teenaged, geriatric and complicated pregnancies of all kinds, to other on-the-job duties such as caring for patients with sexually transmitted diseases, psychiatric illnesses and those who require emergency attention, there is hardly much time left for the women of Nonnatus House to have to any sort of personal life. Nevertheless, Season 14 sees plenty of out-of-office romance, protests and personal troubles for these hardworking women.
Nuns, nurses and Nonnatus:
‘Call the Midwife’ returns to PBS for 14th season
Returning to the screen for the series’ 14th season are Judy Parfitt (“Ever After: A Cinderella Story,” 1998), Rebecca Gethings (“The Thick of It”) and Jenny Agutter (“An American Werewolf in London,” 1981) as Sisters Monica Joan, Veronica and Julienne, respectively; Linda Bassett (“Kinky Boots,” 2005) as Nurse Crane; Laura Main (“Murder City”) as Shelagh Turner; Helen George (“The Three Musketeers,” 2011) as Trixie Aylward; Megan Cusack (“The Cherry Orchard,” 2020), who is scheduled to leave before Season 15, and emerging talent Francesca Fullilove as Nancy and Colette Corrigan. Also returning are Cliff Parisi (“From Hell,” 2001) and Annabelle Apsion (“Lolita,” 1997) as Fred and Violet Buckle, alongside Stephen McGann (“Emmerdale Farm”) as Dr. Turner and Georgie Glen (“Waterloo Road”) as Miss Higgins. Andrea Irvine (“Red Rock”), meanwhile, joins the cast as Esther Noble.
Likewise, Trinidadian-born midwife Joyce Highland (Renee Bailey, “Rebel Cheer Squad: A Get Even Series”), who joined the cast of characters last season as a midwifery pupil and is now a full-fledged English nurse, returns to the cast alongside this season’s newest member: nun and midwife Sister Catherine, a nun in training played by Molly Vevers (“The Rig”).

Mid-life matters: Oprah talks menopause with celebrity friends during all-new special
Across her impressive career, Oprah Winfrey (“The Oprah Winfrey Show”) has never shied away from difficult or uncomfortable topics, from artificial intelligence to weight loss drugs and more. Now, she plans to shed light on a phase of life that all women experi ence during “An Oprah Winfrey Special: The Menopause Revolution,” airing Monday, March 31, on ABC, before streaming Tuesday, April 1, on Disney+ and Hulu.
Oprah first opened dialogue on the subject during 2023’s “The Menopause Talk,” but now, during this latest conversation, the renowned television host has welcomed an esteemed panel of medical experts, celebrity guests, friends and fellow women to discuss the traditionally taboo sub ject of menopause before a live studio audience.
Joined by the likes of outspoken activists Halle Berry (“Catwoman,” 2004), Naomi Watts (“Mulholland Drive,” 2001), comedian Leanne Morgan (“You’re Cordially Invited,” 2025) and Emmy-winning women’s health advocate Maria Shriver (“Today”), Oprah plans to delve into a wide array of changes that might occur during this midlife transition — both physical and neurological — leaning on OB-GYN Dr. Mary Claire Haver and neurologist Dr. Rhonda Voskuhl as they discuss potential symptoms, misdiagnoses and more.
Speaking with ABC, Winfrey shared: “When I was around 48 years old, I thought I was dying and went from doctor to doctor trying to understand why my heart was racing, and did not receive any answers until I picked up a book and read how heart palpitations can be a symptom indicating a change is coming to your body.
“This show starts the revolution of answers for millions of women throughout this country,” she continues. “We discuss what you need to know to best advocate for yourself when it comes to mental health, sleep, weight, sex and your brain so we can ultimately see how freeing menopause can be in your life, with the best yet to come.”
Produced by Harpo Productions, with Winfrey and Tara Montgomery (“Oprah with Meghan and Harry: A CBS Primetime Special,” 2021) leading as executive producers, “An Oprah Winfrey Special: The Menopause Revolution,” premieres Monday, March 31, on ABC, before streaming Tuesday, April 1, on Disney+ and Hulu.

Food, friends and family: Chef Jernard serves up Southern favorites in ‘Savor the City’
Welcoming passengers to climb aboard at “the delicious intersection between Black culture, history and cuisine” (per Forbes), Mississippi-born chef Jernard Wells takes off on a food-and-adventure-filled journey during the brand-new series “Savor the City,” coming to TV One Thursday, April 3.
Inspired by the historic Green Book — a travel guide published from the ‘30s to the ‘60s, providing Black travelers the information necessary to stay safe while visiting different cities across a segregated America — this latest endeavor from Wells follows the chef as he travels across the country with special guests, indulging in delicious, one-of-a-kind, mouth-watering meals while exploring locations that celebrate Black culture, travel and food.
“We’re going to the most sought-after dining spots, giving you an exclusive VIP tour of your favorite Blackowned establishments,” reads a description given by TV One. “From street food to fine dining, each episode will showcase a different city and highlight the unique offerings and hidden gems that make up Black culture.”
Affectionately called “The Chef of Love,” Wells has previously hosted “New Soul Kitchen” and “New Soul Kitchen Remix” for TV One’s sister network, CLEO TV.
The chef — also a bestselling cookbook author, husband and father of nine — hopes to continue sharing his love of food through this latest series, sharing with Forbes that “‘Savor the City’ takes a unique approach to exploring Black culinary heritage” in the process.
“We, as African Americans and as people of color, travel to some of the best places. We seek out some of
bestof ...
the best food and the best entertainment that speaks to us,” Wells says.
“My job with ‘Savor the City’ is taking on that task to show more of who we are and our resilience. I’m talking about from New Orleans to Martha’s Vineyard to Brooklyn and the West Indian Day Parade. I’m talking about a million people [participating in the parade] right here in Brooklyn. Where else can you get that?” He asks. “A lot of people don’t know it’s been going on for 20 years. Over a million people show up there every year. Those are the things that I want to shine light on.”
Sharing foodie love, travel tips and more, “Savor the City” makes its debut on TV One Thursday, April 3.

BEST SCHOOL MOVIES
Sidney Poitier in “To Sir, With Love”
“Blackboard Jungle” (1955): Glenn Ford stars as a teacher in screenwriter-director Richard Brooks’ drama, with Vic Morrow as an especially tough character among the inner-city students. Sidney Poitier stars as a musically talented student, helping make Bill Haley and the Comets’ “Rock Around the Clock” iconic.
“To Sir, With Love” (1967): Sidney Poitier went from student to teacher in this hugely memorable drama where he tries to educate another inner-city class ... this one in London. Co-star Lulu performs the hit title song.
“American Graffiti” (1973): Technically, this George Lucas-directed classic is a graduation-night movie rather than a back-to-school movie ... but new grads Curt and Steve (Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Howard) do return to those hallways during a dance.
Turner Classic Movies shows the film Monday, March 31.
“Fast Times at Ridgemont High” (1982): Cameron Crowe’s great script fuels this highly entertaining comedy. Sean Penn stands out as surfer Jeff Spicoli—who memorably has a pizza delivered to him in class.
“The Breakfast Club” (1985): You can’t do a list of great school movies without this example. Writer-director John Hughes gives Molly Ringwald, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez and Anthony Michael Hall an unforgettable detention.
“Clueless” (1995): Alicia Silverstone became a major star after playing Cher Horowitz, a high-schooler who occupies herself with orchestrating the love lives of her acquaintances. Director Amy Heckerling’s comedy puts a contemporary spin on the Jane Austen novel, “Emma.”
“Election” (1999): Overtly ambitious Tracy Flick (Reese Witherspoon) wants nothing more than to be class president, but her teacher (Matthew Broderick) is determined to foil her.
“School of Rock” (2003): Jack Black stars as Dewey Finn, a failed musician posing as a substitute teacher who turns his class into a rock band.
“Mean Girls” (2004): The Tina Fey-written comedy casts Lindsay Lohan as a student who takes down the clique known as The Plastics from the inside.
