Toby Sanderman and Uche Agada in “Running Point”
Caught the rebound: A new team president steps up in ‘Running Point’
Ownership of a professional basketball team might not be everyone’s idea of a family business, but in the new Netflix comedy series “Running Point,” premiering Thursday, Feb. 27, the Gordon family’s line of succession names an unexpected new president of the Los Angeles Waves.
The 10-episode series stars Kate Hudson (“Glass Onion,” 2022) as Isla Gordon, a driven executive who is surprised but prepared when she is tapped to run the franchise after her brother (Justin Theroux, “White House Plumbers”) crashes out and is forced to resign from the position.
Isla is the only sister in the Gordon family C-suite and the Waves are the greatest team in the history of the game, so there is a lot of weight on her shoulders as she takes on the towering title. The pressure to carry it well comes from all angles, including from her brothers.
Scott MacArthur (“The Righteous Gemstones”) is Isla’s brother Ness, a single-season professional player who is now determined to redeem his reputation as the general manager of the Waves. Ness may have been forgettable on the team roster, but he’s motivated to make his mark in the Waves’ offices.
“The Other Two” star Drew Tarver is Sandy Gordon, the chief financial officer of the Waves, whose non-athleticism set him apart from the rest of his family growing up. Now, Sandy’s intelligence is an integral part of the team’s success — money well spent shows on the court.
It’s a good feeling to know that your family has your back, even if, as in Isla’s case, they are painfully honest with you. But siblings also know exactly which button to press to make you lose your cool in record time. To help keep Isla’s executive game on track, she has her own team.
Lev Levy (Max Greenfield, “The Neighborhood”) is Isla’s eternally supportive and positive fiancé, a pediatrician with a heart of gold. Brenda Song (“Dollface”) is Ali Lee, the Waves’ intimidating chief of staff and a longtime friend of Isla’s.
One of the first hurdles in Isla’s reign as president is mending the backbone of the Waves, Marcus Winfield (Toby Sandeman, “The Game”). Winfield has two championship rings, two Olympic gold medals and 12 all-star game invites to his name, but so many years on the top has the legendary athlete withdrawing from his team.
Also on the Los Angeles Waves team roster are Chet Hanks (“Your Honour”) as point guard Travis Bugg; Uche Agada (“Rise,” 2022) as rookie Dyson Gibbs; and Dane DiLiegro (“Imaginary,” 2024) as Eastern European Waves player Badrag Knauss. Jay Ellis (“Insecure”) is Waves coach Jay Brown, a former player who has brought home several championships. Jay’s quiet magnetism works for the team, but it may prove too strong for Isla to keep things strictly professional.
The cast also includes Fabrizio Guido (“Perry Mason”) as Jackie Moreno, a popcorn vendor at the Waves’ arena who receives a dream promotion; Keyla Monterroso Mejia (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”) as Jackie’s cousin Ana, an enterprising personal injury lawyer; and Roberto Sanchez (“Palm Royale”) as Stephen Ramirez, the stuffy head of the Waves board.
Sitcom virtuoso Mindy Kaling (“The Office”) executive produces “Running Point” alongside “The Mindy Project” collaborators Ike Barinholtz and David Stassen. With two of her latest comedies — Netflix’s “Never I Ever” and Max’s “The Sex Lives of College Girls” — having recently aired their series finales, Kaling talked to Netflix’s Tudum about the upcoming series.
“I really love writing shows about ambitious women,” the actor-writer-producer shared, “whether they’re a 15-year-old girl in the Valley or the president of a basketball team. We wanted to ensure that audiences could see themselves in the characters’ struggles and triumphs.”

From pole to pole: Tom Hanks to narrate upcoming docuseries ‘The Americas’
Narrated by the iconic Tom Hanks (“Cast Away,” 2000), the brand-new nature docuseries
“The Americas” — making its debut with a two-hour premiere Sunday, Feb. 23, on NBC, be fore streaming the next day on Peacock — explores the many creatures living across Earth’s most varied landmass.
Across 10 episodes, this fascinating series uses the latest in cutting-edge technology to show case the entirety of the Americas’ massive and diverse landscape, covering all 8,700 miles of land
— the only landmass that stretches from the Arctic to the Antarctic, notes NBC — as it delves into the never-before-seen behavior of the species that call North and South America home.
As the network describes: “Five years in the making and filmed over 180 expeditions ... ‘The Americas’ unprecedented scale and ambition delivers remarkable world firsts; new species, new intimate courtship, dramatic deep sea hunting and some of nature’s strangest stories — even a frog that seems to defy death every day.”
Fascinating and informative, each hour-long episode of the series focuses on a unique location from across the neighboring continents, with “The Atlantic Coast,” “Mexico,” “The Wild West,” “The Amazon,” “The Frozen North,” “The Gulf Coast,” “The Andes,” “The Caribbean,” “The West Coast” and “Patagonia” set to make up the first season.
Speaking on the series, the president of Universal Television’s Alternative Studio, Toby Gorman, said he “[had] this idea for many years that there was one place on the planet that, for some reason, no one had ever really done a full job on, which is the whole of the Americas. It’s all about the scale of the place. There is nowhere on Earth that has this range.”
In a later interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Gorman also shared that Hanks was his first and only choice for narrator. “We asked ourselves, ‘Who is the American version of David Attenborough?’” Gorman said. “We agreed internally there was a list of one: Tom Hanks.”
With Emmy and BAFTA award-winning wildlife producer Mike Gunton (“Planet Earth II”) acting as executive producer on behalf of BBC Studios Natural History Unit, “The Americas” makes its debut Sunday, Feb. 23, on NBC, and streaming the next day on Peacock. Solution on page 17.

Double dippers delight: Chips and salsa collide during ‘The Food That Built America’
Supermarket superheroes shine, “from unlocking original ideas to elevating old favorites” (per History), during Season 6 of “The Food That Built America,” making its debut Sunday, Feb. 23, on the History Channel.
“Stuffed with the origin stories of inspiring food pioneers, visionaries and entrepreneurs who revolutionized America’s culinary landscape,” says the network, this food-loving series delves into the creation of the biggest and most lucrative food brands in American history, following as previously unknown visionaries work to evolve tastebuds and introduce global flavors to the masses.
Last season, “The Food That Built America” took viewers on a journey through the globalization of the American palette, as some homegrown franchises exploded across the world (McDonald’s), while other foreign favorites found their footing in local grocery stores — such as SpaghettiOs, for example — growing in popularity until becoming a household staple.
This latest season follows in its predecessor’s footsteps, unveiling the inspiration behind classic American snacks — such as Raisinets, Goobers, Milk Duds and Chips Ahoy cookies — while also taking time to highlight the introduction of new flavors and cuisines previously underappreciated by the American public. Namely, Mexican cuisine. You might not be able to last a weekend without them now, but without a few brave-stomached individuals, tortilla chips and salsa would never have gained the popularity they did, forming brands such as Doritos, Tostitos and Pace Salsa.
Discussed in the season premiere, visionaries David Pace and Arch West were pioneers in their own fields —

as a syrup maker and an ad man, respectively — both bringing forth ideas that would introduce Mexican flavors into the American palette. Through the ‘50s, ‘60s and beyond, the duo managed to build a new food sector worth $128 billion — all thanks to the simple but delicious pairing of chips and salsa. Before the pairing gained popularity, however, the snack-makers would have to cross one massive hurdle: Americans didn’t like spicy food. That is until they tried taco-flavored Doritos. From a taco stand in San Antonio, to Taco Bell, to shelves across America, see how two flavor-loving inventors permanently changed the country’s food landscape during the Season 6 premiere of “The Food That Built America,” making its debut Sunday, Feb. 23, on History Channel.

BEST TOM HANKS MOVIES
“Splash” (1984): Hanks — who narrates the NBC documentary series “The Americas,” premiering Sunday, Feb. 23 — made a big splash himself in the comedy that made him a movie star, casting him as an ordinary guy in love with a mermaid (Daryl Hannah).
“Nothing in Common” (1986): Showing his dramatic side as well as the more playful one that made him a star, Hanks excels as an advertising whiz who has trouble navigating his parents (Jackie Gleason, Eva Marie Saint).
“Big” (1988): The childlike spirit Hanks exudes is crucial to this comedy about a youngster who gets his wish to grow up overnight.
“A League of Their Own” (1992): “There’s no crying in baseball!” Hanks delivers an iconic movie line as the manager of an all-female baseball team.
“Sleepless in Seattle” (1993): The template for Hanks’ work as a romantic leading man marked one of his memorable teamings with Meg Ryan.
“Philadelphia” (1993): Oscar came calling the first time for Hanks for his fully felt portrayal of a lawyer with AIDS suing his former firm.
“Forrest Gump” (1994): Hanks earned his second Oscar — in as many years — as he took the iconic title character through encounters with others real and fictional.
“Apollo 13” (1995): Hanks is compelling as Jim Lovell, one of the three astronauts performing a mission that almost turned tragic.
“That Thing You Do!” (1996): Even more as writer-director than costar, Hanks paints a warm portrait of a fictitious ‘60s rock band’s rise and fall.
“Saving Private Ryan” (1998): Under Oscar winner Steven Spielberg’s direction, Hanks is the perfect everyman in representing a U.S. soldier in charge of others amid the horrors of World War II.
“The Green Mile” (2000): Hanks does stunning work in Stephen King’s story of a prison guard deeply affected by a death-row convict (Michael Clarke Duncan) possessed of a unique ability.
“Cast Away” (2000): Considering his sole co-star for much of the film is a volleyball, Hanks’ talent is invaluable to this saga of a courier-company executive stranded on an island by a plane crash.
“Captain Phillips” (2013): Hanks gives a thoroughly gripping performance in the title role of this true story of a ship overtaken by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean.
“A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” (2019): Hanks isn’t going to walk into the role of someone as famous as children’s-show host Fred Rogers without being prepared, and here, he is ready for the challenge.
