From novel to Netflix: ‘The Night Agent’ premieres second season
Who is the real bad guy in “Night Agent”? To those unfamiliar with the drama, the question points to several shifting plots and potential double-crosses within the storyline. For those following along with the series and patiently awaiting a second season, this question comes across as completely understandable given that series is “filled with baddies” (per Netflix).
With 10 45-minute episodes already on Netflix from Season 1 and a recent confirmation that Season 3 is already in the casting stages, Netflix welcomes “The Night Agent” Season 2, premiering Thursday, Jan. 23.
Based on the novel of the same name by American journalist and New York Times bestselling author Matthew Quirk, “The Night Agent” follows Peter Sutherland (played on screen by Gabriel Basso, “Juror #2,” 2024), a low-level FBI agent who “works in the basement of the White House, manning a phone that never rings” (per Netflix). One evening, however, the phone does ring, prompting Sutherland to take on a case so big it would impact the entire country.
As it turns out (and now may be a good time to mention that several mild spoilers from Season 1 lay ahead), the basement phone is tied to “an emergency line for undercover spies” (per Netflix). When Sutherland answers the call, he hears a woman’s voice explain that a double homicide has just taken place and she fears she may be next. Springing into action to protect the civilian who somehow managed to find the night agents’ helpline, what follows is an action-packed season filled with assassination attempts, double-crosses, brazen attacks, mistaken identities, terrorist plots and oh so much running.
“Imagine ‘All the President’s Men’ [1976] with car chases,” said creator Shawn Ryan (“The Shield”) to Netflix’s online publication, Tudum. “If you like the Jack Ryan books, the Jack Reacher books, if you like the Bourne Identity stuff, if you like political intrigue, then ‘The Night Agent’ is for you.”
On the note of “political intrigue,” the spy series holds nothing back. With all the twists and turns of a good murder mystery and shady, motivated characters akin to “House of Cards” and “Game of Thrones,” “The Night Agent” all but urges viewers not to get too attached to any one character. While audiences now know who committed the D.C. Metro bombing in Season 1, matters become far more sinister when it is revealed that others have been pulling the strings behind the scenes. This season, the series dives into an increasingly shadowy world. After Peter’s success in Season 1, he has earned the opportunity to work in the secretive organization Night Action, which pushes him “into a world where danger is everywhere and trust is in short supply” (per Netflix).
“There are people here who make bad choices for what they think are the right reasons,” Ryan explains to Netflix during another interview. “But that’s a slippery slope that leads to increased bad decisions, where suddenly you look up and ... you’ve lost your soul.”
In addition to the titular night agent played by Basso, returning actors include Luciane Buchanan (“The New Legends of Monkey”), who plays emergency-line caller Rose Larkin, and BAFTA nominee Fola Evans-Akingbola (“Siren”), who plays Secret Service agent Chelsea Arrington. Joining the cast this season is Amanda Warren (“The Leftovers”) as Catherine, a “veteran of the top-secret Night Action investigative program who trains and oversees various Night Agents” (per Netflix’s Tudum).

“Sleep” (Jan. 21)
Hyun-su (Lee Sun-kyun) and Soo-jin (Jung Yu-mi) are newlyweds whose domestic bliss is disrupted when Hyun-su begins speaking in his sleep. From that night on, whenever he falls asleep, Hyun-su transforms into someone else, with no recollection of what happened the night before. Overwhelmed with anxiety that he may hurt himself or their young family, Soo-jin can barely sleep because of this irrational fear. Despite treatment, Hyun-su’s sleepwalking only intensifies, and Soo-jin begins to feel that her unborn child may be in danger.
“The Killer Inside: The Ruth Finley Story” (Jan. 24)
The kidnapping and sudden reappearance of Ruth Finley (Teri Hatcher) leaves investigators scrambling for answers. As suspicion mounts and new evidence comes to light, authorities entertain the notion that the perpetrator may be someone intimately connected to her. Tahmoh Penikett also stars.

Foodie faves: Catch up on the culinary world with three exciting series on Netflix
While dinner’s in the oven, delve into a threecourse meal of another kind with these three fascinating culinary series, all of which are available to stream now on Netflix.
Having recently premiered its second season, “High on the Hog: How African American Cuisine Transformed America” follows host Stephen Satterfield — a popular food writer, producer and media entrepreneur — as he “travels across the United States to uncover how African American cuisine has fueled social justice movements, transformed communities and awakened cultural creativity in America in powerful and lasting ways” (per Netflix). Throughout a series of four episodes, Satterfield heads to New Orleans, Chicago, New York and Atlanta, taking time at each stop to meet local chefs, discussing African ingredients and recipes that inspired regional cuisines across the country. All the while, Satterfield listens in as trailblazers and luminaries tell stories of their ancestors’ connections to food.
For those interested in watching something more competitive, “Culinary Class Wars,” a show that sees 100 talented cooks competing to earn themselves a spot as Korea’s top chef, is available. Competitors are divided into two groups: the “Black Spoons,” consisting of 80 chefs who found their acclaim through typical means, and the 20 “White Spoons,” who received their culinary training specifically within oneof-a-kind fine dining establishments. Part culinary show, part high-stakes reality competition, “Culinary Class Wars” offers its winner a life-changing grand prize of 300 million won (roughly $220,000), and will soon be returning for a second season, promising even more chaos in the kitchen.

“Blackboard Jungle” (1955): Since he later would play one of the screen’s most famous educators, it’s ironic that Sidney Poitier had one of his first hits playing a student in this tense classroom tale.
“The Defiant Ones” (1958): Poitier and Tony Curtis convey appropriate fury as literally linked chain-gang fugitives in director Stanley Kramer’s racially blistering drama.
“A Raisin in the Sun” (1961): Poitier shines in this adaptation of Lorraine Hansberry’s classic play. Turner Classic Movies will show the film as part of a Martin Luther King Jr. Day-saluting lineup Monday, Jan. 20. “Lilies of the Field” (1963): Poitier became the first African American to win the best actor Oscar for his portrayal of a handyman who helps a group of nuns build a chapel.
“A Patch of Blue” (1965): Poitier and Elizabeth Hartman are heartbreakingly wonderful in this drama of a blind woman and the man who befriends her. TCM also has this on Jan. 20.
