Wild London In the summer the Scrubs fill with joyous silly games- people walk like crabs on all fours, bounce along as if on pogo sticks, play American Rounders in full kit, breeches, caps and the right shoes, then in tiny glades you can find a man playing a cello, or a bagpiper. There are butterflies of all kinds, thick in the thistles, bees, many wild flowers, vetch, daisy, cornflower, lupins, lace cap, and cow parsley. You know, despite being in Central London, you are in an English meadow, a watery marsh come January. I want to help save it, keep it poetic, wild and full of the delight it gives to all who roam there, or go to pick blackberries on a summers night with their children. All winter I am out in every kind of weather, even in the dusk and early dark, with dogs and friends tramping through mud, rain, ice and snow. The lanes fill up with bog, and deep puddles. Few people are out. The parakeets fly low, streaming across the wild, now purpled brown blackberry tangles and the tall golden ochre grasses and seeds. Its a twice daily tramp and I note the colours and the clouds, which are never the same. The land is slightly higher than surrounding ground and the skies are stormy and magnificent. I draw in tiny books and memorise what I see. It can take a while to warm up when back inside but this inspires the work in the studio. Susan Wilson
