In 2017, business was slow for Sarah Kerver. She was a sales rep for a Colorado-based company trying to push hemp and CBD products in Texas. But customers were apprehensive.

“No one wanted to touch [CBD]. No one wanted to talk about it. No one was interested in carrying this product in any sort of spa or retail space,” Kerver said.

Today, the market for CBD, or cannabidiol, is exploding. Stores are popping up across the state selling tinctures and topicals. It’s being mixed into smoothies and coffee at cafes. Spas are

The Austin Chamber of Commerce counted at least three CBD-related relocations or expansions since the bill passed last summer, creating about 140 new jobs in the emerging sector.

But the list, which is compiled from public media announcements and deals the chamber is involved in, isn’t comprehensive.

Sisters Shayda and Sydney Torabi founded Restart CBD in September 2018, just before the Farm Bill passed. Sydney Torabi said the changes in the law have made business run more smoothly.

The two originally intended to operate the business

exclusively online but decided to open a brick-andmortar location in Austin after having difficulty with several online payment companies, from momand-pop merchants to giants like PayPal, that didn’t want anything to do with cannabis.

“We were a business, but it wasn’t as functional as it could’ve been until the [Texas] law passed,” Sydney Torabi said.

The Torabis started with a pop-up store and expanded to a permanent location last April, a month before Texas law changed.

“We were operating in a gray area until the Texas bill passed,” Sydney said.

“It did take away a little bit of the stigma. Like, ‘OK, now it’s legal in Texas. We can go to a CBD shop and not feel like we’re doing something bad.’

Gwen Dear Gwen, First of all, they won’t garnish your wages.

They can’t. For that to happen, they would have to go through all the formal, legal steps of suing you, and then they’d have to win the case. Debt collectors like to play with people’s emotions because, many times, folks will give in and do whatever they want—whether they can afford it or not.

The worst thing you can do in these situations is react with panic or fear.

Talk to them calmly and rationally, and explain your financial situation.

You may be able to reach a compromise that works for both of you. If they get nasty, or continue to lie to you, let them know you’ll file a complaint with the FTC (Federal Trade Commission).

Pushy debt collectors have a habit of getting polite and reasonable in a hurry when faced with the possibility of the federal government stepping in.

Do everything you reasonably can to pay your debts, Gwen. You owe the money, and that means you have a legal and moral obligation to pay them. But you don’t have to put up with a collector’s lies and harassment!

Blackened Salmon Sliders with Pickled Beet Relish

Recipe courtesy of tarateaspoon.com Prep time: 40 minutes Yield: 12 sliders (2 per serving) 4 single-serve cups Aunt Nellie’s Diced Pickled Beets

1 finely chopped scallion (about 2 tablespoons) 1/2 cup shredded radishes

1 cup plain Greek yogurt 1/2 cup finely crumbled feta cheese

2 tablespoons chopped flat-leaf parsley

2 teaspoons chopped oregano 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt, plus additional, to taste, divided

1 pinch ground black pepper

2 pounds salmon fillets, skinless

3 tablespoons blackened seasoning

2 tablespoons olive oil 12 slider buns

1 cup baby arugula Drain beets well. In medium bowl, combine diced beets, scallions and radishes. Set aside.

In small bowl, combine yogurt, feta, parsley and oregano.

Stir in 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt and black pepper. Set aside.

Cut salmon into 12 roughly 2 1/2-inch squares, about 1/2-inch thick. Slice thick parts of fillets in half to make thinner, if needed.

Sprinkle fillets with salt, to taste, on both sides. Sprinkle evenly with blackened seasoning until well coated.

Heat nonstick skillet or cast-iron pan over medium heat and add oil. Add salmon, in batches if needed, and cook, turning once, until salmon is crisped and almost cooked through, about 1 1/2 minutes per side. Remove and let rest.

Spread each slider bun with about 1 tablespoon yogurt sauce. Layer arugula, salmon and beet relish on each slider and serve.

1 can (15 ounces) READ German Potato Salad 3 Roma tomatoes, diced 1/4 cup finely diced red onion

2 cups baby arugula 6 slices crisp cooked bacon,

crumbled

BLT Potato Salad

Dressing: 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar

3 tablespoons olive oil 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/4 teaspoon

black pepper Place potato salad in large bowl. Gently stir in diced tomatoes and onion.

Add arugula; stir gently to combine. Sprinkle with crumbled bacon.

To make dressing: In bowl, combine apple cider vinegar, olive oil, salt, garlic powder and black pepper. Drizzle over potato salad to serve.
